editor’s note

Myself with Patrick garcia, nikka martinez, and their cherub, chelsea; Our darling boy, Bruce

Remember September Normally, this month is commenced with joy among our brood. For the past 12 years, we would celebrate my darling “son” Bruce’s birthday every 26th. It’s just with some cake and food, but we always get excited because he would turn a year older, which signifies that he spent another 365 days with us. He would’ve been 13 this year—I swore I thought he would live forever, but as life would have it, he passed away from a long bout with cancer and a heart attack in February. I cry whenever I think of his memory, no exception as I write this. Bruce was our joy for 3 years before my real human daughter, Sabina, was born, and his death truly tore a piece of our hearts. I recently told Sabina and Maxine that I’ll get them a small dog when Mathis is bigger, but to my surprise, Sabina asks me if our family can survive another death. I thought they would jump at the chance for a new pet, but like their dad and myself, our furry ones are treated like our own, so we take everything to heart. That said, isn’t it astounding to realize how much our children discern? We dismiss them as kids, just because of their size and age. Normally, my eldest is always playing around, very childlike, but she surprises me with her wisdom. I sometimes think she’s not listening, not paying attention, but she remembers more than I do. Recently, she asked me which Hollywood party in LA we went to that I got this certain, nondescript shirt for her. I didn’t think she was old enough to recollect those types of things because that was about 5 years ago, and she’ll only be 10 in October. I also recognize how empathetic my second, Maxine, is. Even before I say anything, she already knows how I feel. She always puts other people ahead of her, and is the type who will give up a favorite toy or meal just so her siblings will get to taste it. It’s too early to tell what kind of boy my son will be, but I do know he enjoys basketball as any circular object is thrown around in the direction farthest possible from the nanny or myself.

6

b c PHILIPPINES { September 2013 }

Lately I’ve been having nightmares—maybe because it’s nearing Bruce’s birthday, or due to some personal tribulations. Dare I say early midlife crisis, or sudden onset of belated PPD? I always say that the hardest battles are the ones you have with yourself because you know you can do something about it, and yet end up being powerless against. Especially as a parent, I feel feeble when it comes to my children. I always feel like I can do more for them, be more, give more, but I can only do so much. This is the stress and sadness writing to you now, so please forgive me for bumming you out. Very sorry. On a much happier note, our cover family is not only eye candy—they have that quiet contentment that few in the entertainment industry are blessed with. Patrick and Nikka is the picture of genuine love, and are equally smitten by their adorable Chelsea. I was touched when Patrick told me that he wishes to have a closer relationship with his son from a previous relationship, Jazz, and even shows me the room that awaits in their new house. I was raised by my single mom, and have a father who has never tried hard to keep ties with me, so this kind of affection from a dad always warms my heart. Nikka’s presence is sheer joy—she radiates an infectious unpretentiousness that is so wonderful to be around. No wonder Patrick was a goner with this one. It’s the ‘ber months, dear friends. And if your children are like mine, they’re already wondering what toy to ask Santa for this Christmas and are already making plans of how to stay up so they won’t miss when he comes in to deliver the presents. Although the days have sometimes turned into scorchers, as if we didn’t just survive a devastating typhoon, I welcome the holidays around the corner with extended arms reach. Bruce, you are missed more than you know. Happy birthday in heaven, my dear son. My lookalike. We love you forever.

Born in Marseilles and currently residing in Nice, French Riviera, the original designer of Livingstones, Stéphanie Marin primarily concentrated on eco-designs during the early years in her career. In 1990, Stéphanie made textile recycling a fashion trend, creating her “Habits Magiques” five years later, making it a huge success. Beginning 2004, she extended her research to design and habitat, proposing a design without compromise between comfort, design quality, and dream, which reads functions that are now of prime importance in a long-term way. It is with her works that she shows the commitment of osmosis between the intention and the form. safe sleep tips every parent must know

SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, afflicts so many infants from one month to one year old every year, and despite studies, it is still a puzzle as to what really causes “crib death”. Learn how to keep your child safe during bedtime g r a p h ic b y A hlee del rosario

i

t is 2 a.m. Mary (not her real name) had just finished burping her 2 month old baby, and placed her to sleep in her adorable crib, complete with coordinated pillows, comforters, and crib bumpers. She had purchased them at the local department store because they were so cute. The

14

bedding set actually came with a hefty price tag, but “it’s okay,” she thought, “nothing but the best for my baby.” At 7 a.m., Mary woke up and wondered why her baby hasn’t even cried for milk yet. She checked and found her still, lifeless body in the crib. She went hys-

terical, called for her husband to come quick, and together they rushed their baby to the nearest hospital. The distraught parents wanted some answers, but the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with her baby. The baby was in fact perfectly healthy, they couldn’t explain the sudden cause of her death. bcmag.ph

your child’s slumber This tragedy is called “Sudden Infant Death” or SIDS—aptly named to describe the sudden, unexplained death of a seemingly healthy infant from 0 to 12 months of age. It is a silent epidemic that steals the lives of thousands of babies every year; leaving behind nothing but anguish and guilt for the bereaved parents. Nobody wants to talk about it, that’s why we rarely hear about it in the news. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening. In fact, every caregiver should be educated on the importance of safe sleep. Because parents like Mary deserve to know simple, life-saving interventions that can protect their babies. SleepSack Micro-Fleece Wearable Blanket by HALO, halophilippines.com Here are some safe sleep tips every parent must know:

Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time. Recent studies have shown that unless medically-indicated, babies should sleep on their backs (vs. tummy or side) because this can greatly reduce the risk of SIDS.

Use a safe crib or play yard that meets current safety standards (visit cpsc.gov for more details). Use a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.

Make sure your baby’s sleepwear uses safe and non-toxic fabrics. Babies have underdeveloped skin and may easily develop sensitivity to fabrics, which can hinder sleep. It is important to check that brands have certifications to authenticate their products’ safety.

Validate product safety. Remove all soft bedding

and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, and pillows). Over 900 U.S. hospitals use the award-winning Halo SleepSack wearable blanket for safer sleep. And for good reason. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using a wearable blanket to eliminate the risk of entanglement or suffocation from loose blankets. Use a wearable blanket.

flat spots and strengthen the head and neck muscles. These are simple practices that just take seconds to implement, but they could mean life or death for an infant. As an added bonus, moms find that maintaining a clutter-free crib makes a practical solution for life with a baby. Quilts, comforters, and other crib bedding sets are difficult to clean and often become breeding grounds for disease-causing germs and allergens. In contrast, a wearable blanket can be laundered just like any piece of clothing. A quality brand holds up to frequent laundry, and can even last till your next baby. In addition, using a wearable blanket can increase your baby’s sense of security by keeping her wrapped up in a warm cocoon, thus helping her sleep better. Since it can’t be kicked off during the active phases of sleep, your little one stays warm all night and avoids getting sick. This brings you even more savings on medical bills. bc

After more than 20 years of designing showrooms and shops to sell its collections throughout the world, Maison Martin Margiela is delving into new projects involving interior architecture and design. Bernadette Chevalier, La Maison ChampsElysées representative, explains why they chose the Maison for the redesign of the seventeen out of fifty-seven rooms of the seven-story hotel.“With the help of Maison Martin Margiela, we wanted to offer clients in search of different experiences, new concepts of living space by redefining the rules and offering a luxurious but relaxed atmosphere, where minimalism of forms is served by incredible attention to detail. Moreover, this hotel is located in the centre of a district which brings the most prestigious French couture houses together.” The hotel is located on 8 Rue Jean Goujon, 8th district in Paris.

La Maison Champs-Elysées consists of two buildings, one dating from the Second Empire under Napoleon III, the other built in more recent times. The rich history of the building on the Rue Jean Goujon gives the house its unique character. In 1864, the Duchess of Rivoli, Princess d’Essling, Grand Mistress of the Empress Eugénie’s household, had her private mansion built at number 8. In designing this project, Margiela “aimed for continuity in relation to its own artistic history by offering a place where contrasts harmonize that are further tinged with surrealism.” Margiela, appointed after winning the competition to design the historical part of the building, has re-thought this space to create hotel suites, a restaurant, a smoking room, a bar and a reception area. Margiela adds, “The Maison is delighted to reinterpret another house as its first Paris hotel project—a dramatic world where reality and make-believe seem to blend. The decor is like a succession of stage sets where references are mixed so as to create an unusual atmosphere where past and present jostle harmoniously.” bc

After a successful 10-year stint as a makeup artist, Gigi Gonzales-Uson laid low after giving birth to her son, Marty. As he grew older, Gigi found that she wanted to continue pursuing her passion, without sacrificing her time with her family. While people approached her for consultation for cosmetics and spa products, she thought of an idea that would make pampering more convenient for mothers like her. “I really had a deep appreciation of the industry,” she shared. “From the point of view of a mom, you don’t want to go to the mall anymore, so that’s how it all came together.” After 2 years of research, planning, and dedicated hard work, Coco Nail Studio was born. A charming nook of serenity located south of Metro Manila, Coco Nail Studio is a recently-opened community nail spa that offers fine nail care (“at very reasonable prices,” she adds) and waxing. Everything about the experience entails relaxation. Their sack bcmag.ph

pillows are decorated with biblical and inspirational messages (and may be bought for P980 each, so you can bring a piece of Coco back home) and while you have your nail service done, clients are treated to refreshing drinks and a little snack (usually a macaron) on the side. “We want people to come in and feel very relaxed and pampered so something sweet will help you,” Gigi chimed in. The staff is friendly and well trained. All equipment are sterilized and sealed prior to use. You can choose from on-trend polishes from Chanel, Butter London, OPI, among others. Treat yourself to Coco Spa, their most popular service. It starts with a hand and foot soak in the salon’s signature the’evrt (green tea) water and an exfoliation process with sea salt scrub. During or after, you get treated to a chair massage. An equally popular service is the gel nails service. Gel nails can last up to a month without cracking,

perfect for mothers who are busy with household chores and the like. What sets Coco Nail Studio apart from other nail salons is that it has amenities for children such as toys and books. It also has nail services for children, and offers “sparties” for you and your little ones. Gigi’s steady success has become an inspiration for entrepreneurial mothers across the metro. Her advice for those who want to start their own business? “Make sure it’s something you like, something that interests you.” She adds that with resources such as the internet and magazines readily available, it’s possible for mothers to pursue their passion projects without sacrificing precious family time as well. 2nd level Don Gesu Building, Don Jesus Boulevard, Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa city. 5523156, Tuesdays to Sundays, from 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.

Have everything you need (bath accessories, towels for drying, new change of diapers) nearby. Never leave your baby unattended. Rainy Season The rainy seasons often bring an increase risk for mosquito-related diseases such as dengue, so it doesn’t hurt to be extra vigilant by arming our kids with protection against this horrible illness. Insect and mosquito repellents come in various forms, so choose one that fits your child’s lifestyle. Citronella stickers are available for easy fastening on your child’s clothing, while arm bands may also do the trick. If you’re more at ease with topical repellents, there are lotions and oils that offer DEET-free protection. For those not in the know, DEET is an active ingredient present in some insect-repellents, and while it can effectively keep insects away, it can also irritate the skin. It is recommended that you do not use any DEET-containing products on babies 6 months and younger.

onventional thinking has flown out the window for advertisers who want to attract women to their product, according to a new report from the University of Manitoba and University of Michigan. The report is based off of three studies that conclude blatant, in-your-face content featuring thin, young models actually turn off a woman’s desire for the product; subjects saw the pitch as too transparent. This recognition alerted an individual’s defense mechanism, which actually boosted self-esteem. But when an idealized model was used to sell a product with more subtlety, subjects were more prone to want the product and be the woman in the advertisement. “So, this study has some mixed good news, but there’s still an avalanche of negativity pulling down our girls and young women; according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, roughly 70 percent of girls in middle and high school, and even as young as fifth grade, say idealized images of women in magazines guide their sense of the perfect body,” says women’s advocate Stacey Rowcliffe, author of “Female Fusion: Different Flowers from the Same Garden.” “There’s even a blog called ‘thinspiration,’ or ‘thinspo,’ which features young women and girls writing about ways and experiences in losing massive amounts of weight. With this kind of mindset, a girl is never skinny enough and often results in anorexia, bulimia, and an imprisoning sense of never being good enough.” bc

About Stacey Rowcliffe Stacey Rowcliffe is nearing completion of her master’s degree in clinical psychology. She lives in Billings, Mont., with her two children, Brittney and Ryan, who both have Type 1 diabetes. Female Fusion is her second published book. Rowcliffe believes that no matter what people are battling, their mindset and response determine the paths their lives take. bcmag.ph

Rowcliffe says the primary influence on a girl’s life is the older woman raising her; she offers three perspectives in which older women may offer advice to girls and young women: Past pains shape character and provide inner strength:

Many people may think of Christina Aguilera as a pampered pop diva; however, in reality, she has worked hard and endured a difficult home life as a small child. As a 10-year-old, she had already gained a reputation as a little girl with a big voice. Later, after having become a world-famous celebrity, she cited domestic violence in her home as a reason for her enduring drive and passionate voice. Just as muscle is developed and built with tension, so too challenging situations builds and defines character. Keeping it real …

Young women need to understand that much of what is seen on television and internet ads, billboards, and in magazines has been altered far beyond what is real. Digital imaging has made it possible to remove cellulite and other flaws before an image is finalized. There are videos available that show just how much a model is transformed before being photo-

graphed, and the before-and-after images are drastically different. Additionally, cosmetic surgery plays upon the fears of young and beautiful women who still feel the need to implement botox, breast implants, facelifts, nose lifts, cellulite removal, tummy tucks, butt implants and the like. Women were created to be beautiful; once that is realized, her inner beauty will shine. Relationships (among family, friends, boyfriends & sisters):

Every issue, belief, attitude, or assumption not only shapes the relationships between you and other human beings; it shapes the relationship you have with yourself! The above points—accepting past pain and being honest with yourself and others—are intimately linked to your relationship with others. How you treat others is a measure of who you are. If you are obsessed with trying to be the prettiest and thinnest girl in class, it’s a clear sign you are not comfortable in your own skin. { September 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

Veggie Meatball Soup This is based on a soup recipe by Jessica Seinfeld, from her cookbook “Deceptively Delicious.” The original recipe calls for turkey meatballs and sweet potato-carrot puree. This is a speedier version, and packed with more veggies. Ingredients

Easy Beef Shank Nilaga Nilaga is the quintessential rainy-day comfort food. This version uses beef shanks, which give the clear broth a wonderful, hearty flavor. Ingredients 3 free-range beef shanks, around 800 grams-1 kilo 1 medium onion, sliced Half a head of garlic, bruised 3 tablespoons fish sauce (patis) 8 peppercorns Salt 3 medium potatoes 1 large carrots, peeled and halved lengthwise 100 grams, French beans 200 grams, pechay Preparation

In a pressure cooker, sauté the onion and garlic in a small amount of oil, until aromatic. 2. Add the beef shanks, making sure the heat is high. Brown both sides of the beef, then add the fish sauce. Cover the pot (without pressure yet) for about three minutes. 3. Add enough water to cover the beef shanks (around 8 – 10 cups). 4. Pressure-cook the soup for about 1 hour. 5. Season the broth with salt (as needed), then simmer for a few more minutes. 6. Serve the nilaga in individual bowls, and garnish with the French beans, carrot, potato and pechay.

Meatballs 400 grams free-range ground beef 2 slices, bread ¼ cup fresh milk 1 large egg, lightly beaten ¼ cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese 3 cloves, garlic 1 medium carrot, finely grated ¼ cup sweet potato, finely grated ½ teaspoon, salt ¼ teaspoon, fresh ground pepper

Vegetable Soup ½ cup onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon, olive oil 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes 3 cups prepared beef broth (make from scratch, or buy in a can) ½ cup carrot, cubed ½ cup cauliflower ½ cup broccoli Salt & pepper, to taste

200 grams pasta shells Grated pecorino cheese, for garnish Preparation

Prepare the vegetable soup first. Saute the onion and garlic until aromatic; then add the diced can tomatoes, the finely grated veggies, and the broth. Let this mixture come to a boil, then simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring constantly. 2. Prepare the meatballs, while the soup simmers: Soak the bread in milk until soft. Then, mix the ground beef, cheese, garlic, grated carrot and grated sweet potato. Form into small meatballs, using a teaspoon to help you roll each piece. 3. Once the soup has simmered, you’ll see the oils from the tomato rise to the top of the soup. Gently drop your meatballs into the soup. 4. Cook the soup for another ten minutes, until the meatballs are cooked. 5. Cook the pasta noodles in a separate pot of water, with a little salt. 6. To serve, spoon some of the meatball soup into a bowl, and top with pasta shells. Sprinkle some more freshly grated Pecorino cheese on top and serve immediately.

Did you know that pasture-raised cattle are not given antibiotics and growth hormones, that may affect our health? Organic beef, especially those from The Farm, is packed with nutrients and contains more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which supports our immune system and helps fight cancer— definitely a plus in our books.

Asian Beef Stew This is a dish that my mother taught me to do. It’s got a nice, sweet saucy broth, and can be eaten on its own, with some fluffy Japanese rice, or even a green salad with freshly grated hard cheese and a berrymustard vinaigrette. Either way, it’s a versatile and satisfying dish. Ingredients 300 grams free-range beef brisket, cubed 300 grams free-range beef kaldereta cut, bone-in, cubed 1 tablespoon, cooking oil 1 small onion, chopped 6 cloves garlic, minced 3 1-inch pieces ginger, sliced thinly

½ cup soy sauce ½ cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon cooking wine 1 tablespoon sesame oil 2 tablespoons liquid aminos (organic, allnatural seasoning) 2 cups beef broth Salt & pepper, to taste Spring onions, for garnish Dried sesame seeds, for garnish

Preparation

In a pressure cooker, sauté the onion, garlic and ginger until aromatic. Add the beef and sauté until browned. 2. Mix in the soy sauce, brown sugar, cooking wine, liquid seasoning, sesame oil, and beef broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover with the pressure lid. 3. Pressure-cook the stew for about 1 hour. By then, the beef will be tender. 4. Season the broth with salt and freshly-ground black pepper, then simmer for a few more minutes. 5. Serve the stew in individual bowls, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions. 1.

up in the south, biking, playing sports from basketball, tennis, to badminton.

K: To gymnastics, let’s not forget. P: Gymnastics, yeah. K: I was told that you and Cheska would gang up on your elder brother, Pichon. Is that true? P: Not really. It’s either my brother and

I would gang up on our sister, or Cheks and I would gang up on our brother. K: What was it like growing up in the limelight with your siblings? P: Showbiz was just work,

but whenever we’re at home, everything’s just normal.

K: Did you always want to act for a living? P: No. It was just something that

happened because my sister, brother, and I were in commercials. Back then my cousin, Hindy [WeberTantoco] used to work or OJT for Mr. M [Johnny Manahan] in ABS-CBN. They were putting up a show, Ang TV. Hindy told Mr. M, ‘Oh, I have cousins who are commercial models. Maybe they just want to try.’ So that’s how we entered Ang TV, we just wanted to try. From there, nagsunod-sunod na. From movies and then, next thing you know, artista na pala ako. K: (Laughs) I didn’t know about Hindy though. I thought it was the other way around. Anyway, I saw you have a lot of awards. One of our editors calls you an “overachiever.” That said, what are your most favorite and challenging projects or roles? P: Every role is a challenge. Every role

is different so it’s a different preparation all the time.

K: Is it harder to be the hero or villain? P: Both, it depends what kind

emotions you have to bring out.

For Boys

Sweatshirts have gone from functional to fashionable over the years, and us parents are grateful for that. Let your young man strut the streets in his favorite sweater (hoodies are also a good alternative especially during cold days) and jeans and he’s all set for school or play. Don’t forget to invest in footwear that will endure the weather, as our boys will always love to play no matter what the season.

For Girls Who says you can’t wear dresses during rainy days? Brighten up the cloudy days with floral prints and add an accent by donning a chic cropped jacket that not only keeps her warm, but also spells ‘chic bebe’.

etan eyebrow-raising experience at this one-of-a-kind facility that takes care of our arches the way pros do it. Established in Singapore in 2000, Brow Haus was inspired by the German movement Bauhaus, a concept wherein everything has a purpose. Today, Brow Haus is the first and only concept store to specialize in brow and lash grooming services in the Philippines, with its first location in Serendra. While our eyes may be the windows to our soul, our fancy arches (that come in various shapes, thickness, and color) add the attitude to make us more expressive and aesthetically good-looking. As moms, we still want to be groomed the best way we can, from the tips of our toenails up to our crowning glory. That’s why we must never forget our precious arches. Every face can be accentuated with the perfect brow shape, and this place is here to help us find our match. Brow Haus promises to deliver excellent results from expertly-trained staff. Here’s a go-to guide: the brow construction service is basic shaping and threading—but for mommies with colored tresses, there is the Browgraphy, which consists of threading and tinting—enabling us to say goodbye to unevenly colored hair and brows. Moms on-the-go will also love the lash curl service, which lasts up to 3 months. Imagine the time saved on curling those pesky little hairs that sometimes don’t even cooperate. For those who want a complete makeover, the facility offers the Brow Resurrection. Unlike the famous eyebrow tattoo, this works with the ones that you already have. Lasting up to two years, there is no need to keep coming back to the salon for brow touchups. Branches: Serendra and Greenbelt 5 (soon, Lucky China Town, Binondo, and Davao). Store hours: 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Brow construction service, P598; Browgraphy, P1,298. Ask about savings plans that will reduce costs up to P300 per session. Phone: 901-0597.

8 Ever heard of the term “babymoon”? It refers to that blissful feeling you get every time you bond with your newborn baby. In a more scientific approach, “babymoon” is actually caused by the oxytocin hormone, which coincidentally is also responsible for milk letdown reflex. Also called the “love hormone”, oxytocin also helps you relax, and is responsible for several roles in reproduction, pair bonding, and maternal behaviors. If you’re having a difficult time producing milk for your baby, consider increasing your intake of lactogenic foods such as dark leafy vegetables, carrots, asparagus, brown rice, and food that is rich in essential fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids.

Sarap dumikit dahil di malagkit Moms know it isn’t fun to cuddle when it’s hot. Skin gets sticky and sweaty. It doesn’t feel good to the touch. And after an afternoon of playing under the sun, your sticky skin can get in the way of baby’s sweet hugs. So make sure your skin is always smooth and fresh. Use new Johnson’s Baby Cooling Lotion. It’s the first gel-lotion with a waterbased formula. This means no sticky feeling, even on the hottest days. It’s light, spreads easily, and instantly cools. Refreshing your skin while moisturizing it too. It’s gentle enough for baby’s skin and yours too. So it’s perfect for every day use. Enjoy hugs, without the sticky feeling with new Johnson’s Baby Cooling lotion.

ast August 3, Clarins revealed the most beautiful version of women’s faces with the perfect V shape contours through the Clarins Shaping Facial Lift SPA Party held at the Clarins Skin Spa in Rustan’s Makati.

The event featured a special lecture on issues such as face puffiness, baby fat and double chin, and how Clarins’ awardwinning Shaping Facial Lift line can help address these issues to make one’s face slimmer and lift the contours from every angle. Guests were also treated to a special 20-minute skin spa, where they experienced the range of products itself. Results were visible immediately after the spa session, and most agreed—achieving a small v-shaped face and bigger, brighter eyes is only a few steps away with the Clarins Shaping Facial Lift product line. Moreover, guests were also treated to afternoon tea and macarons, discounted Clarins products for the duration of the event, and samples of the Shaping Facial Lift to take home, making it an affair to remember for women of all ages.

ast June 22, mothers and children from all around the metro were invited to the first Breeze Sigeland held at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. Mothers and children alike were welcomed to take part in fun activities as well as to bring home a toy from the Sigeland toy store, the first toy store that doesn’t accept cash as payment. Sige Moms Carmina Villaroel and Tessa Prieto-Valdes opened the event with a ceremonial ribbon cutting and the awarding of the winners of the Sige Short films contest. Breeze believes that stains, which come from playing and exploring, are good because they build life experiences and teach lessons. Breeze wishes to instill this in mothers (to make them Sige Moms) so they can encourage their children to try new things. Instead of paying for the toys, mothers had to make a promise to say yes to stains and yes to learning. Sigeland proved to be a fun venue for moms ands kids to bond through a memorable shopping experience that teaches them values and lessons along the way. 1 Carmina and Mavy Villaroel-Legaspi 2 Nicole Jacinto with daughter, Sofia 3 Tessa Prieto-Valdes 4 Unilever’s Marketing director for home care Jay Go and daughter Jilian 5 Issa Litton and daughters 6 BC’s Cel Bancolita and Aiya Mai Rodjel with Unilever’s Mara Banson 7 Loralee Soong and kids

f all of us could get a spot on a hit TV show and the lead falls in love with us and we’d have three beautiful children, then in a few months shed off all the 60 lbs of baby weight like the way we devour M&M’s Peanut candy— life would be peachy. Hold up, that is the love story of Kevin and Sam Sorbo (except for the candy, that’s just us). These two familiar faces from TV (who stand 6’3” and 5’11” respectively), stars of hit shows Hercules and Andromeda, got together while filming the smash TV hit Hercules in New Zealand, where Sam played a princess. Apart from being a household staple whom we followed for several years, Kevin modeled all over bcmag.ph

the world, and was personally handpicked by the late Gianni Versace to be on his runway shows. Sam (aka Sam Jenkins) was also a model who appeared on several magazines, one of which is a Vogue cover. Having originally settled down in Nevada during their early years as a couple, the two have now found a nesting place in California for them and their little loves: Braeden, now 12; Shane, now 9; and Octavia, now 8. And on one Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 BC (Before Cries—sorry, couldn’t resist), we enjoyed a few hours of fashion with one of the most beautiful celebrity families.

In 2011, award-winning actor Kevin Sorbo wrote a book titled True Strength: My Journey from Hercules to Mere Mortal—and How Nearly Dying Saved My Life, which chronicled his sudden bout with aneurysm when he was 38, followed by three strokes that he claims saved his life, and in turn made him reevaluate his life. His illness took a blow on his eyesight and balance, forcing him to go from 14-hour work days (filming Hercules) to an-hour-a-day schedules that helped him recover. His health crisis at the time was kept under wraps, but in True Strength, he recounts even his moments in the ICU, and how he bounced back stronger.

How did you guys meet?

We met on the set of Hercules. I played a princess. It agreed with me. Now that we’ve moved back to LA, I’m the Princess of Bel-Air! When did you know you were going to marry Kevin?

I fell in love with him on our second meeting. We had to do the goodbye scene, and we were “forced” to kiss because the script called for it. Everything after that is a blur... How is it like transitioning from acting to managing kids when they act out?

My kids constantly impress me with their acting abilities! When they want something, it’s life or death to them. If more TV actors had such stakes in

90

b c PHILIPPINES { September 2013 }

their scenes, TV would be much more dramatic and interesting. Managing the kids’ tempers has been a challenge that I find I am happy to take on. They learn so quickly, and it is an incredible experience seeing how my, and Kevin’s, influence is manifested. Are you strict, or are you a spoiler? What about Kevin?

I’m strict—he spoils. He simply can’t help himself. Who does the clothes shopping for the family?

Well, we are both kind of Kamikaze shoppers. When the feeling hits us, we buy—but other than that, we’re both kind of disinterested. Kevin manages to go more overboard than I do. Remember? He’s the spoiling parent. Favorite stores?

I personally love Nordstrom because they carry my shoe size, which is quite large! And I’m a Ralph Lauren girl, but I also like Etro a lot. There’s also an LA store called Boulmiche, which I find has interesting and unusual pieces. Since I’ve basically been pregnant for the past 6 years, I’m kind of just getting back into following fashion, and trying to discover a new style that works for me with kids. I’m still looking for yoga clothing which appeals to me, something feminine and fun. I love Chip & Pepper jeans—for me and the kids. But shopping for the kids, I go anywhere and everywhere. I don’t want to saddle them with any particular style, so I buy what hits me as appropriate. They won’t be going Goth anytime soon, though. How do you stay so good-looking after three kids? bcmag.ph

Braeden, at this stage of his life, looks just like me at that age. He’s a great kid with a wild imagination. Shane... he’s going to be a heartbreaker. This monster is into hitting and being hit! Octavia is gorgeous! She rules her older brothers with an evil screech and wicked right hook.

I’m lucky, because getting back into shape has been pretty easy for me. I started very slowly, each time, and got really hooked on yoga. Now I’m pretty serious about it. Even once a week [sessions] was enough to slim me down to pre-pregnancy size. And I had gained around 55-60 pounds each time! Is it true you broke Nevada’s records for having the heaviest baby born in the State when your second son Shane was born?

State? I’m not sure about that, but at 12 lbs. 6 oz., Shane was the heaviest for the hospital and all the people involved—including me! I feel really lucky, because half a decade ago I

Right now I am so happy being Mommy. I take my new role quite seriously, plus, I’m not convinced I’m done yet. I also like to write screenplays for comedy, so that’s my hobby. And believe me, it’s enough having four neurotic actors in the family!

We heard your kids call you, “Father” during the shoot. Does that have anything to do with them see you all

I fell in love with him on our second meeting. We had to do the goodbye scene, and we were ‘forced’ to kiss because the script called for it. Everything after that is a blur... bcmag.ph

dressed-up as a god when they watch Hercules videos?

Braeden started calling me “Father” when he was 2. I still don’t know how it came about. He just started doing it. It was odd and funny at first, now I’m just used to it. Shane calls me the same, only because he hears his big brother doing it. Who is the real “ruler” in your household?

I’m from Minnesota. People from other states call people from Minnesota, “Minnesota nice.” Sam is from New York City. You do the math. You were away for years while doing Hercules in New Zealand. How did you handle the long-distance relationship bcmag.ph

with Sam?

I was a single guy for the first four years in New Zealand, so I never had the strain of a long distance relationship. Those never work. I don’t care what people say. We met late during Season 4. Married rather quickly and she was down there with me the last 3 seasons. Is it true you go clothes shopping for the boys? How do you know what to pick?

I love shopping for my kids, which is odd because I hate to shop for myself. Zero patience—I just pick out stuff. Whatever looks fun. I’m a jock, so I tend to lean towards that line of clothing.

How is it like transitioning from the lead of a hit TV show (which even beat Baywatch for 4 years) to becoming a hands-on dad?

The transition for me was easy in terms of wanting to be part of my kids’ lives. I waited a long time to get married and have kids, so I was in a much better position, both financially and mentally, to adapt to their wants and needs. The kids rule the house, but I enjoy the challenge. Tell us more about your kids.

Braeden, at this stage of his life, looks just like me at that age. Very strange— a bit of cloning going on here. He’s a great kid with a wild imagination. He’s very creative and a lot smarter then me at that age. Hell, smarter { September 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

OK

Shopping for the kids, I go anywhere and everywhere. I don’t want to saddle them with any particular style, so I buy what hits me as appropriate. They won’t be going Goth anytime soon, though.

than me now! He got his brains from Sam. He’ll also be a good athlete. I brag about that from my side of the family— soccer, basketball, baseball, golf. Shane looks so much like my nephew from my oldest brother—eyes, nose, head shape, body—but he got Sam’s full lips. He’s going to be a heartbreaker. This monster is into hitting and being hit! Also a good athlete, but will be my football, hockey, rugby maniac. No fear. Octavia is gorgeous! She is her mommy’s girl all the way. Octavia rules her older brothers with an evil screech and wicked right hook. She’s my tomboy, much to mommy’s chagrin. She’s a smart one, too. bc
