MYSELF with Dimples and Boyet Ahmee; my family at the farm resto

June Bug I’m extra excited for the end of June because we’ve decided to celebrate my husband and daughter’s advanced birthday parties in Boracay, just in time for my mother-in-law’s trip here from the U.S. We normally have a get together to commemorate special occasions, but basking and strolling in the white sandy shores gives me a different kind of thrill. I’m just a bit scared of the flights and boat rides, because we will be traveling with our little one. But no matter, everything makes for a great memory. Speaking of celebrations, our cover threesome celebrates their 10th anniversary this month, which hopefully makes it an even more memorable photo shoot for one of my favorite celebrity families in Manila—the Ahmees. All three are easygoing, no frills, and just all-over lovely people. Their adorable and sweet daughter, Callie, tells me that she is set on becoming an architect when I asked if she wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Although early in the game, I find her kind of determination at a young age so admirable, because these days the kids have way too much options. To find your dream and stick to it, not many have that sort of strength, and I am so glad to witness Dimples and Boyet guiding her every step of the way. As promised back in May, the second installment of our back-to-school shopping guide appears here. Nothing quite like the start of the learning year for the kids, where they get to buy new kicks, bags, lunch boxes, what-haveyous—while their mom and dads’ checkbooks take a huge hit. All good though, because there is nothing more fulfilling as a parent than being able to provide for your kids (apart from ensuring the intangibles like health, safety, shelter, etc., naturally). We also have styling ideas for babies and kids lucky enough not to need school uniforms in our story called, “Fashion Play.” If not to be worn in school, these style tips are a winner all year.

8

b c PHILIPPINES { JUNE 2013 }

Last month was also extra exciting for our brood because we launched our first The Farm Resto in Alabang Hills, together with two of our beloved friends, Kristine Hermosa-Sotto and Oyo Sotto, and some other partners. This issue features our quaint restaurant, along with other BC-rated family friendly dining establishments. If you get a chance to trek to our side of town south of Manila, I can ‘introduce’ you to some of the most delicious burgers and steaks of your life, and best of all, they are certified organic by the OCCP. As I write this, my youngest two darlings have a cough and sore throat, and that’s counting my 9-month old in. School hasn’t even begun, and yet the kids are already getting sick. This is the only thing that bogs me down—when a loved one gets ill. In order to combat those unavoidable episodes, I have become quite the germaphobe over the years. Even though my purse gets extra heavy, I always carry around a first aid kit. Thankfully, I have never had to use it—save for antibacterial ointment, eye drops, and bandages. This issue, we put together quite a hefty suggestion for what to be ready with in your stash, but do let me know if there’s anything we may have missed out on. Because the babies will be left at home while the bigger kids head off, we put together some slumber essentials (and niceto-haves) for the tiny cuties. I am a huge believer in naps and long, nightly sleep schedules for my son (we co-sleep in one bed, so I know if he gets enough rest), and I always like him comfortable and clean when he dozes off. Soooo, on your mark folks, because it’s a homestretch to the time of homeworks, projects that you never thought you’d have to do all over again, and the never-ending reminders to, “finish your food, hurry up and shower, do your homework, and sleep early.” Wouldn’t miss these for the world.

prevent violence in schools by identifying troubled students

“My dad noticed my grades slipping…I would come home with bruises and lie to him,” says Charles “Andy” Williams, now 27, in the Oprah Winfrey Network interview. “I didn’t know how to communicate that somethin’ really, really bad was goin’ on. I didn’t know how to talk about it.”

child psychology

Take Andy’s story, says educational research specialist Dr. Mariam Azin, and multiply it by hundreds of thousands of students across the country, and the world. Among them are the next Adam Lanza, James Holmes, or Andy Williams—people who have become so emotionally disturbed, they turn to killing strangers. “It’s the quiet kids who slip through the cracks and don’t get the help they need,” says the founder and CEO of Mazin

ered data found that 750 of its 2,500 students reported having a substance abuse issue. But, in the year she studied, only 10 students were referred for substance abuse intervention, and just five of them connected with a program. Three completed it. Education, a social psychologist who has spent decades conducting research in educational settings and on at-risk students. One high school for which she gath-

“The loud and disruptive kids who are having problems get the attention they need; the quiet ones don’t,” Mazin says. “If we can identify them—and we can!—and intervene, we can help prevent future violence and suicides.”

effective steps IN identifying troubled students Make it everybody’s job.

From the lunch lady to the custodian to the bus driver to the teacher, many adults notice small signs, like Andy Williams’ declining grades and his bruises. If everyone reported the small signs they saw, the cumulative effect could be one big indicator of a problem. “The cafeteria worker may notice he’s not eating,” Azin says. “The custodian may see him being bullied. One sign here or there gets overlooked, but if everyone knows that, if they see something that concerns them, they document it, then we’ll be able to connect those dots and make sure more kids get the help they need.” School leadership should make it everyone’s job to report. Provide a safe way to report.

Some people say nothing because they’re afraid they’ll be expected to make a decision about what the behavior means or they’ll have to do something about it. Some fear reporting will make them legally accountable. “Everyone involved with students needs to understand they are expected only to report what they see—changes in behavior, incidents that may cause emotional distress,” Azin says. “A single, isolated incident will not necessarily result in action being taken.” Schools also need to embed an infrastructure through bcmag.ph

which concerns can be documented securely as soon as an incident takes place. Identify community services that can help.

Schools may be reluctant to identify troubled students because they don’t have the resources to provide them with help. “Identify and develop relationships with programs and resources in the community to which students can also be referred,” Azin says. “While schools are the place where many troubled students can be identified, it does not necessarily follow that it is solely the school’s responsibility to provide all of the necessary services to those students and their families. It takes a village to help provide services to at-risk youth and their families and to help prevent school violence. But if we can’t document and clearly identify the need, it’s impossible to get these resources in place. Embed a system for follow-up and monitoring.

Once students who are showing signs of academic, behavioral, or emotional risk are identified and referred to appropriate services, a system for follow-up and monitoring needs to be embedded to ensure that they actually connect with appropriate mental and physical

health services, academic intervention or other family services. Ideally, subsequent monitoring of progress will occur to see if the identified services and interventions are appropriate and producing the intended effects and to make necessary adjustments. “Oftentimes, the way it is now is that schools will make a referral but then it just goes into a black hole—nobody knows what happens afterwards,” says Azin. After a tragedy, Azin says, those who knew the perpetrator recall the signs they witnessed: not speaking to classmates, drug use, bullying. “People see the signs,” she says. “Shouldn’t we create a way for them to document that information and get these kids help before something terrible happens?” bc

usic teacher Carolyn Cheng and her family suffered for many years before finally finding relief from asthma. Their ordeal, however, did not end due to some breakthrough in conventional medicine. They learned and utilized the Buteyko Method to arrest this debilitating and life-threatening disease. Shallow breathing

This breathing method, named after Russian respiratory specialist Dr. Konstantin Buteyko who developed it over 50 years ago, is a clinically acknowledged program that retrains a person’s

18

b c PHILIPPINES { JUNE 2013 }

breathing pattern to normal levels by reducing chronic hyperventilation syndrome (CHVS). After discovering that sick people breathe faster and deeper than healthy ones, Dr. Buteyko successfully pioneered a program that taught the benefits of shallow breathing. More than 1,000 patients suffering from asthma and hypertension (stenocardia) were successfully treated and had totally recovered when he introduced the method in 1967. Word on this new method spread worldwide after the dissolution of the communist Soviet Union and it has

since found acceptance all over the world, after scientific trials in Canada, Australia, Scotland, and New Zealand showed it can treat hyperventilation and other breathing-related conditions, while strengthening one’s immune function, reducing stress and improving overall wellbeing. In 2008, the British Thoracic Society upgraded Buteyko to Category B in its Guidelines on the Management of Asthma, which means high-quality clinical trials support the efficacy of the method in reducing asthma symptoms and bronchodilator use. It has been proven safe for children as young as 4 years old and adults as old as 90. bcmag.ph

b u t e y ko m e t h o d Both can learn the method with fast and effective results. Correct breathing

The method retrains the respiratory center with managed breath holds and reduced breathing through exercises and some lifestyle modifications, including posture, eating and sleeping habits, and exercise. Introduced in the Philippines by Jac Vidgen, an Australian senior practitioner with 19 years of experience in teaching the method, Buteyko has helped thousands of Filipinos find immediate relief from so-called lifestyle diseases—more than 200 of them— including asthma, allergies (including rhinitis or having excess mucus), sleep apnea, anxiety disorders, hay fever, coughing, and stress. Through Buteyko, Cheng’s family and many others who suffer from even serious chronic diseases like emphysema, diabetes, heart conditions, hormonal disorders, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or psychological disturbances such as chronic fatigue syndrome are mostly able to resume their normal, productive lives with little or no medication at all. Some also use the method to control weight, treat skin disorders, or enhance their sports performance or meditative practices, such as yoga. This profound improvement in wellbeing can be as dramatic as having symptoms reduced or eliminated in just a day or within one week, which is the case with asthma and some other conditions. Asthma actually has two stages: the steady state of chronic asthma and the acute state of asthma exacerbation. The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing and coughing, but not everyone with this illness experiences these. In severe cases, the airflow may block the passage for breathing, making it a life-threatening illness at least since the introduction of bronchodilating medicines. bcmag.ph

Carolyn Cheng and family, who were once afflicted by asthma, and have found relief through the Buteyko Method

Living in the city with heavy pollution and a stressful environment can no doubt exacerbate the conditions of those who “over-breathe.” However, these factors only trigger the symptoms, not cause them. In fact, the incidence of asthma, stroke and heart conditions are much less in more polluted but poor countries. The high rate of respiratory problems in developed countries like New Zealand has been associated to the widespread use of bronchodilating medications. Cheng says that, since the age of seven, asthma would always follow every time her children got sick. “When they had asthma, it became a family thing. I also suffered the symptoms.” They were getting relief from using a nebulizer or taking expensive medicines including steroids, which over the years had cost the family a fortune. More than saving money, not taking medications long-term has also helped them avoid all sorts of side effects. “It has been more than ten years since we took the workshop and we all haven’t had any major asthma attack,” Cheng says. On some people’s perception that the Buteyko workshop is expensive, she would tell them that “in two to three months you save more money than buying bronchodilators and steroids.” Breathing through the nose

Buteyko teaches participants to breathe in and out through the nose instead of through the mouth, and to have light, gentle, not deep, heavy breathing—among other lifestyle management techniques. Jac says practicing the method poses no danger on the

student as long as they adhere to the individual instructions of the practitioner. But for some who have certain conditions, incorrect practice may be dangerous if not ably supervised by a qualified and experienced practitioner. According to Jac, there are some quick results from reconditioning the breathing, though it depends on factors such as the age and health of the participant and their degree of practice and willingness to be aware of their breathing. However, he says most people experience improvements within the first few days of the workshop, which means reduced symptoms, improved sleep and digestion, reduced mucus, better energy levels, and usually reduced need for medication. The more profound systemic improvements occur over time. bc

About Jac Vidgen: Senior Buteyko practitioner Jac Vidgen, who conducts workshops in Makati, Mandaluyong, and Quezon City, says that eliminating dysfunctional breathing requires discipline and perseverance, but the results and benefits gained from such persistence is, as the song goes, worth every breath one takes. Testament of BARBARA AMBROSIO, homeopathic medicine practitioner, and mom to two: “Breathe in gently…breathe out… and 1…2...3...4...” That is how my house sounds like every morning as soon as my 6 year old son wakes up. He has asthma, I have asthma, my husband has asthma. Doing Buteyko exercises has done wonders for me and my family. When my son gets a viral infection, his coughing is nonstop, which gets very distressing for me to hear. The coughing then leads to asthma. We do breathing exercises 4-5 times a day and by the second day, he is coughing a lot less and breathes easier. He was maintained on inhaled asthma medication since he was 3 years old. We have been practicing Buteyko for a year now, and haven’t used any asthma medications.” { JUNE 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

EMOLLIENTS VS. HUMECTANTS: While these words are often read on moisturizing cream labels, these two words mean different things. An emollient is the substance that keeps the skin moist by providing a protective layer, while humectants are the substances that form bonds with molecules of water to increase moisture levels in skin. Examples of humectants include glycerin, glycerol, and hyaluronic acid, while common emollients are shea butter, cocoa butter, mineral oil, paraffin, coconut, jojoba, sesame, almond, and other plant oils.

eing able to read well is more important than ever for young adults to achieve economic success.

“Kids need strong reading skills if they hope to graduate from high school AND they really need to plan for college—59 percent of U.S. jobs today require some postsecondary education, compared to 28 percent in 1973,” says Rhiannon Paille, 27, an advocate for teen literacy whose new fantasy novel, Flame of Surrender targets young adults.

24

b c PHILIPPINES { JUNE 2013 }

According to UNICEF.org, the literacy rate in percent in males aged 15 to 24 in the Philippines is 97 (between 2005 and 2010), and 98 for females aged 15 to 25 (between 2005 and 2010). The Reading Association of the Philippines (a national affiliate of the International Reading Association and a professional association of reading educators, teachers, reading advocates and parents), whose mission is to improve all aspects of the national reading programs and teaching procedures through teachertraining and research, also promotes reading through events and projects

such as the RAP Literacy Forum. According to the RAP Journal published in 2011, “One way to motivate pupils to read is to teach them to love reading. By bringing literature into the reading classes, the genuine love for reading in children will be developed. Literaturebased reading programs can promote their desire to read and develop positive reading habits.” Moreover, the International Reading Association’s Position Statement on Young Adolescent’s Literacy Learning bcmag.ph

LITERACY states that, “It is during the middle years of schooling that most students refine their reading preferences, become sophisticated readers of informational text, and lay the groundwork for the lifelong reading habit. They begin to use reading to help answer profound questions about themselves and the world. With good instruction, ample time, and opportunity to read a variety of texts, young adolescents can become successful readers both in and out of school.” The best thing parents can do to help boost their 12- to 18-year-olds’ literacy is to get them reading—anything.

SUGGESTIONS on getting your teens to read Buy them comic books.

Boys persistently lag behind girls in reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, Paille says. If your son isn’t a reader, try getting him hooked on comic books. “Stephen King started off reading comics, ‘Tales from the Crypt.’ Hey, if it was good enough for him…!’’ From comic books, they may move into graphic novels, a popular young adult genre. As long as they’re reading, they’re building comprehension skills and vocabulary, so it needn’t be ‘War and Peace.’” Look for book-to-film novels.

Chances are, if it was a great movie, they saw it, and that’s often enough to get a non-reader curious. This is another especially good hook for boys, Paille says. Tune into what they’re interested in.

What kinds of video games do they play? Some popular games have spawned novels, including Halo, EverQuest, ElfQuest and Gears of War. Even gaming guides, which players read to unlock new clues to advancing in the game, can motivate a teen to crack a book.

Make reading materials readily available, even at home.

It would be easier for a teen to pick up books or magazines when they’re right inside your house. Place a variety of reading materials (on various topics such as health, travel, fiction and nonfiction) in your living room’s bookshelf or coffee table. Just make sure that these are age-appropriate, especially if you have younger kids around the house. Read the same book your teen is reading.

Book clubs are popular because people like talking to others who’ve read the same book. Your teen may not be ready for an evening of petit fours and grape juice while discussing the pacing of “Hunger Games,” but it can make for some interesting conversation on the way to soccer practice. definitely question you on why you encourage them to read. Take them to a bookstore during weekend mall visits and offer to buy them a reading material that catches their fancy in exchange for them telling you what they learned from the book or magazine. Make time and make it comfortable.

For families who already have kids who love to read, let them indulge and create an atmosphere of cozy quietness that will entice them even more to spend some time each day to crack open a book. If you want your kids to read, make sure that the environment they’re growing up in is one that is conducive for reading and learning. “People tend to think their young adults aren’t reading if they’re not reading novels,” Paille says. “But novels aren’t for everyone, and whether it’s a comic book or a gaming guide, all reading helps build comprehension skills and vocabulary.” Good magazines, with shorter articles suited for distractible adolescents, might include Sports Illustrated, People, Seventeen, or Mad. “When you’re out shopping, think about what they’re interested in and pick up something just for them. Sometimes, it’s as simple as putting the right reading materials right into their hands.” bc

hen you hear the name “Tutto Domani,” it sounds like any other Italian restaurant, but upon entering its premises, you’d be surprised that it’s anything but the usual. Established in 2011 by the Yupangco siblings and their partners, Tutto Domani started out as a furniture store. Due to the demand of the times, the store transitioned into becoming a lifestyle store, then to the coffee bar that it is today. Pre-schoolers Need to Know Social Skills as Well as Academics Gymboree prepares kids to master their numbers and letters as well as confidence and other social skills needed for lifelong learning The teacher asks your four-year-old to walk through a corridor by himself to go for his assessment to a classroom, which has a pile of toys in the middle. Will she do it or cling instead to mommy? If she walks to the pile of toys, will she grab them or first ask permission from the teacher to play with them?

competencies equip young children with knowledge more fundamental that numbers or letters. These skills provide the young with the knowledge of how to learn. They serve as a solid foundation for future learning environments.”

These are some of the ways top-rated elementary institutions in Metro Manila test a child for school readiness. The child’s response, in addition to how she does in other tests that measure her cognitive and physical abilities, will most likely determine whether she will be accepted into that institution or not. Even at the kindergarten level, it is important for a child to have the social, physical and academic skills needed for early and ongoing success. “Most parents drill their children on their numbers and letters, but unfortunately miss out on the social skills when preparing them to get into the big school,” explains Ann Tan, managing director of Gymboree Philippines. The social skills include confidence, curiosity, self-control, communication, perseverance and cooperation. “These socio-emotional

them,” according to Tan. In the Gymboree setting, lessons in confidence as well as sharing, following direction, taking turns, cooperation, self-control and creativity take on different challenges as the child gets older. In keeping with the attention span of children below five years, each Gymboree lesson may take only 45 minutes. But during that span of time, a lesson will be taught from various approaches—each one appealing to three (visual, auditory and tactile) of the five senses. “When we teach the letter A, we just don’t show a cut-out of the letter A. We may give them dough so they can use it to make a letter A.” This approach recognizes that each child learns differently.

At Gymboree’s 10 locations in Metro Manila and one outlet each in Cebu (and soon another) and General Santos in Mindanao, learning social skills begins even before a child’s first birthday. “We’re guided by the overall principle that children learn best or the most when they are free to actively explore in a fun environment and when they are supported by the people that matter most to

All these activities are done in quick succession and injected with a lot of fun to keep the child and his parent engaged and attentive. “We’ve realized that’s how they learn best.” Nevertheless, the best proof of Gymboree’s effectivity is the eagerness of children and parents to attend the weekly programs. Reserve your child’s slot for this school year today at your nearest Gymboree at www. gymboree-ph.com.

the game changer

t’s common knowledge that almost everybody loves ice cream, but do you know what’s better than ice cream? Good ol’ Italian gelato. Seems the tastebuds of Filipinos are no longer content with store-bought brands to cleanse the palate after a hearty meal, which is why specialty ice cream and gelato shops are popping up all over. And we’re not one to complain. Keeping it real in the gelato scene is the Philippines’ “first and only truly authentic” artisanal gelato, Bono Artisanal Gelato. Amidst the hustle and bustle of busy Makati, this gelato place is an oasis full of fresh, all-natural Italian ice cream. Offering an array of delicious flavors from the wildly popular Speculoos cookie butter and Pistachio, to exotic flavors like Chili Tamarind and Matcha and

Azuki, Bono definitely has something for everyone in the family. What makes this gelato place stand out from the rest? It’s deliciously upfront. Because its ingredients are all-natural and free of food coloring, it’s safe for your precious little ones and even the seniors of your family. All gelatos served are made fresh daily using methods learned in Italy, while using Italian-made machines. Hence, every scoop of gelato is guaranteed to stay true to its homeland. A regular scoop costs P130 while two scoops costs P200. For those who can’t get enough gelato, there are pints that cost P450 each and tubs that cost P850. Its first and only branch for now can house up to 40 people. Bono is looking forward to opening branches in the Ortigas, Taguig, and Alabang areas within the year. 2/F SM Makati, Ayala Avenue, Makati City. 551-0587, 10 AM-9 PM daily

a traditional twist

w

ith the busy lifestyle that our families lead these days, almost everything is instant and readily available. It’s almost a luxury to get to sit down and enjoy handcrafted, traditionally cooked food together. Poco Deli offers this grand feeling. Founded in late 2009, the restaurant is the brainchild of Sonny and Joy De Leon. In their travels, handcrafted artisanal deli products caught their eye, and so Joy took a culinary course and started making her own recipes inspired by these deli products. Initially, Poco Deli offered different kinds of sausages, but throughout time, its menu and clientele expanded. Despite its changes, Poco Deli never compromised its traditional way of cooking and its strict choice of quality ingredients. Offering a casual, homey ambience, Poco Deli is a perfect place for families who want to enjoy delectable helpings together. With a wide array of sausages—from chicken to Hungarian sausage, its crème ala crème is its Wagyu sausage, which, as the name suggests, is made from Wagyu beef. These sausages are reportedly free from preservatives and made from prime cuts. Bacon lovers would surely love the Banchetta, two to three 1-inch slabs of bacon that come with two farm fresh eggs and bacon rice. Asides from these, Poco Deli also offers pasta and pizzas, but for those who can’t decide between pizzas and sausages, they have sausage topped pizzas for your tummy’s delight. Their bestselling entree to cap off your meal is the blackout chocolate cake, which is made of European dark chocolate. Coming at a close second is everyone’s favorite, the blueberry cheesecake. Poco Deli’s Kapitolyo branch can accommodate up to 50 people. Its Ayala Triangle branch, which is twice the size of its Kapitolyo counterpart, can house up to 90 people, making it a great venue for large family gatherings. A single meal at Poco Deli would cost around P300-P500. The restaurant is busiest during the weekends at brunch time, but it can also be reserved for any type of special occasion. health is wealth

here are so many burger shacks in Metro Manila, they’re nearly identical to each other. Imagine a burger joint that offers burgers that are crazy good and healthy, at the same time. Enter The Farm Resto, an extension of “The Farm Organics,” the first certified organic beef outlet in the Philippines. “The Farm” was born in 1976 in Masbate, Philippines. It was originally a breeding farm intended to produce the best quality cattle in the country. Due to the recent organic movement and the demand for “clean” food, The Farm decided to join the healthy food revolution since it has one of the country’s premium quality beef. Hence, The Farm Organics was born

and recently came The Farm Resto (it is a cross between a fast casual and fine dining establishment). The Farm offers a very cool and relaxed ambience with excellent acoustics to boot—perfect for a solo food trip, a date, or even a meal with the whole family. Its bestsellers are the classic cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, and bacon cheeseburger (competitively priced at P250 to P350). Every patty is made from pure, certified organic beef (no extenders nor fillers)—the first in the country. If you’re more of a steak person, The Farm offers Rib eye, tenderloin, and NY steaks (all certified organic, naturally), priced below P1,000. The

counterparts of these steaks would easily run upwards of P1,200 in other restaurants, and those are not even organic to begin with. If kids find these dishes too heavy, the Farm offers baby burgers, steak fried rice, and smoothies for hungry little tummies. Soon, they’ll also offer whole wheat pancakes and brickoven pizzas. Like all dishes served at the Farm (even smoothies and juices, priced from P95 to P140, are all fruit), these are guaranteed delectable, but healthy. Another must-try is the bone marrow, which has got the interests of many piqued, and has become a must-try for most diners.

The Farm’s first branch (owned by BC’s founders, Martin and Kariz Favis, together with actors Kristine Hermosa-Sotto and Oyo Sotto) is tucked away south of Manila, in Alabang Hills, near the West Service Road. Open on Mondays to Fridays from 11:30 AM to 9PM, and Saturdays to Sundays, from 11AM to 9PM. It can accommodate up to 30 people. You can also top off your meals with sweets like mouthwatering Nutella-infused and Red Velvet cupcakes, plus the enigmatic, “Fat Chocolate Chip Cookie.” (P60 to P75). hen you need a pick-me-up from an exhausting day at work, or want to indulge on a “cheat day”, or someone in the family just feels like having a guaranteed, awesome cupcake—you can never go wrong with Cupcakes by Sonja. And we mean, never. When one thinks of Cupcakes by Sonja (CBS), what usually comes to mind is the best-selling Red Velvet Vixen flavor. After all, CBS is the first cupcake shop in the country to introduce the traditional southern red velvet cupcakes. The first CBS store opened in late 2006 at Serendra, the first bakeshop in Manila to specialize exclusively on cupcakes. CBS pioneered gourmet cupcakes in the Philippines and redefined the category through innovation, expanding the cupcake range with new flavors and varieties. From its original 8 flavors, CBS now offers over 30 flavors of cupcakes, which includes fan favorites like Vanilla Sunshine, Chocolate Surprise, the Elvis (an Oreo cookie crush filled with rich peanut butter cream with Reese’s chocolate bits, slathered with chocolate and caramel, and topped with caramelized banana slices), and Pistachios Berries n’ Cream. Because their sweetness is insatiable, CBS expanded their delicious concoctions to include cookies and tarts, to everyone’s sweet tooth delight. Dimples is quick to apologize for her home (although we were unsure why), which she admits to not have stayed at for some days due to her hectic travel schedule that brought her from the US to several provinces in the Philippines in just a span of weeks. Hectic doesn’t even begin to cover it, as she and her family literally just flew in from Tacloban on the morning of our cover shoot, and they headed out right after for a previously scheduled job—this time, for their daughter. Upon meeting Dimples and her brood, you can notice that there’s more to their charm than what meets the eye. She offers us some “morons” (a sweet combination of native chocolate and suman from Tacloban—could this be any more amazing?—wrapped in banana leaves, which we are quick to delight in, but took the time to ponder on its name) as she continues to talk about her latest ventures, including her photography business with her husband, Boyet, with whom she shares 10 amazing years of marriage. Coincidentally, the pair is celebrating their anniversary this June. All the better for BC’s timing. Down-to-earth is yet another adjective to describe our

cover mom this month, as she might as well be your next door neighbor, your sister, the confidant, or the ever-dependent best friend—Dimples is all that, and more. She’s spirited (she animatedly spoke about how they were all floored on the day they bought their flat screen TV, which is now hanging in the wall of their bedroom), she’s smart, and best of all, she’s headstrong. Time seems to be on Dimples side, as the actress looks like she hadn’t aged since her teen years, and her zest for life is evident—not only in her hobby of taking photos, but also in the way she speaks of her journey so far. The homey Ahmee residence swells with snapshots and photos of Dimples’ life with her family, with husband and businessman Boyet Ahmee, and their unica hija, Christiana Amanda Lauren or “Callie,” for short. Boyet seems to be the complete opposite of his wife, smiling shyly as he is handed his wardrobe for every layout. But speaking with him erases all doubts of the shy, behind-the-scenes type of person you make out him to be, as he is jovial and immediately likeable. The princess of the house, Callie, is a blooming sweetheart (who her mom proudly relates that excels well on her studies), and has a penchant for origami. This month, we take a closer look into the family lives of the stunning Dimples Romana, with Boyet and their darling Callie, as they celebrate their first decade as a family.

b BOYET AHMEE

BC: Tell us more about your background in business. You and Dimples do marketing for a real estate company. How long has this been going on? B: I used to work for an IT company and got assigned to

Singapore and the U.S. That required me to be away from the family, and it was very difficult for us to stay connected. So we decided to focus on doing business so we can earn money and at the same time, be there for each other every day. My father is a retired airline pilot, so I basically grew up with airplanes. I look up to him and I’ve always been fascinated with aircrafts, and that led me to my current hobby, which is flying RC planes and helicopters. I like to build scale models of the planes my dad flew during his flying career. By doing this, I hope to honor him and all that he has done for me and our family. BC: Dimples reportedly told you one day that she wanted to get

married. How did you react to this, and were you already planning to propose? B: I was shocked when Dimples told me she was ready

to settle down. I already proposed to her and gave her a ring 6 months prior to her telling me, but I still did not expect it that soon. BC: What was your reaction when you first found out that you were going to be a father? B: I was more than excited to find out we were having

a baby. It was such a blessing. We’ve always wanted to have a young family that we can nurture, enjoy life, and travel the world with.

BC: Funniest moments as a dad? B: I’m just as much a goofball as

Callie is. So picking the funniest moments as a dad would be very hard. But one that I always enjoy is when I dance in public and Cal would try to stop me while she cracks up so hard she would almost pee her pants! (Smiles)

DIMPLES ROMANA-AHMEE BC: What were your best memories while growing up? Describe your relationship with your siblings. Dimples: My siblings are Pebbles (who passed away

at 8), Bam—my brother who is now a teacher—and my sister, Angeli, 12. Growing up, we as siblings had to adjust to my sister, Pebbles’ ‘situation.’ We would stay home for her so she wouldn’t feel isolated from all of us. My fondest memories were playing with her and my brother, Bam, who was then just a year younger than Pebbles. We would play in a small kubo in front of our house, the usual Pinoy games—bahaybahayan and patintero. Pebbles’ leukemia was the acute

kind, so for her to feel normal over the last three years she had cancer, we had to make way to stay and play with her at home where she feels safe and happy. BC: You lost several of your loved ones at an early age. Did that require you to mature faster, and how did it help you later on as an actress? D: I lost Pebbles to leukemia when I was 12, and my Papa

Bong to aneurysm when I was 16. Somehow, I had to cope fast because I was next in line. I knew I had to earn for the family early on. When my Papa passed away, my Mama just gave birth to my youngest sibling, Angeli. Thankfully, the entertainment business paved a way for many opportunities for me to hone my craft as an actress, and earn money for the family at the same time. All the experiences I went through with my family gave me a deeper understanding of life and its many surprises. From then on, I found my tiny place in the business and somehow, I just kept on going.

BC: What was it like working on the widely followed Tabing Ilog in the 90s? What were the biggest challenges as a young actress? D: I played “Jackie,” a kontrabida role in Tabing Ilog in the

‘90s. It was one of those roles I thoroughly enjoyed. There was so much meat in the character, and it was such a challenge. As a young actress then, one of my biggest challenges

was, while I was working, I personally didn’t want to stop going to school. Most of my co-actors stopped going to school for schedule purposes. But since I wanted to continue, it took more effort for me to focus on both. I would read my scripts during breaks between classes, and study for my exams for school during set-up time at work. It was difficult, but possible. BC: Most challenging role to date? D: For Agua Bendita, my character,

“Criselda,” had epilepsy. And as per script, she would have seizure all throughout the serye. Before we started taping, I had to research and videotape my trial seizure and let my husband be the judge if I’ve done it properly.

Once I was told by a wise man, the secret to a happy and long lasting marriage, say YES to your wife all the time! It works! also applied for a scholarship in Enderun College for Culinary Arts, which I attended for about a year. But I’m an entrepreneur, too. I get inspired by many things. I try not to be contained in just one activity. Maybe that’s also one of the reasons why I am an actress—I like to be different all the time. If I’m not acting, I’d probably be a travel photographer or anything that has “travel” written all over it. I love taking photos. I’m afraid I’ll suffer from Alzheimer’s when I’m older. Funny, but true, so I began taking photos of people, places, and moments that I love. I don’t ever want to forget.

I’m Kapampangan, so I guess you could say cooking is in my blood. My Mama is the best cook. She has no formal training, just pure love for food and a good sense of smell and taste. Enderun taught me all I needed to know, not only about cooking, but on the business side as well. They have incredible professors and a very high standard of education. It was both fun and applicable. My husband loves cooking too, so you can imagine going on a diet in our household is an almost impossible task. Some of my favorites of Boyet’s recipes include meatloaf, his beefsteak, ribs, and his strawberry shortcake. Their ultimate favorite recipe of mine would probably be my spaghetti.

BC: What favorite recipes do you cook with the family?

BC: Is it true that you got married at the age of 19?

would you have done professionally? D: I took up BS Tourism in UST and

D: Yes, it is true I married at 19. And through God’s grace, Boyet and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary come June 14. BC: How did you know that Boyet was the man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with? D: I think with marriage, there’s really

no way of knowing who you truly want to spend your whole life with. I think when you feel that the timing is right and you’re blessed to be with a person you think will be a good parent to your children and will be loyal to you, you take that chance. Then you have to make that decision to stay in love and honor your commitment with your partner every single day. Boyet was a good man when we were still together as a couple. band to me. He makes it easy for me to decide to stay in love and honor my commitment to him every day. BC: Tell us more about your fascination with cameras, and why did you choose to collect these? D: Losing my sister and my Papa very

early made me collect cameras. I take as many photos as I can everyday to make sure I don’t miss a moment in our lives. My cameras, old and new, remind me of how beautiful life is. Each camera has a different purpose or function. Each one has a story to tell. Plus, I get to pass them on to Cal and my other future kids. BC: How did your hobby translate into a business, and how did Red Digital start? D: Some of my closest friends and my

husband thought it would be a great business, since we are all very young and dynamic. We decided to open Red Digital studios for photography, photo booth, and video services. Capturing the many beautiful moments of our clients’ lives is our top priority. BC: What are the pros and cons of being a young parent? D: Pros of being a young parent include

being able to run around with your children, travel more with them, enjoy almost the same interests, and having more time spent with them as they are growing up. Cons would be sometimes not knowing exactly what to do—and this I’m terribly guilty of, but thankfully I have my Mama and my in-laws to ask when the situation arises—and often struggling with time management, as most young parents are also busy with work.

BC: What’s it like parenting a girl? Are you a good cop or a bad cop? D: I only have one, a girl, so I have

no way of comparing how it would be par-

I feel that if I, as early as now, teach Callie about discipline and make her aware of what’s right and wrong, I won’t have to repeatedly remind her. Daddy Boyet can be strict too, but when Callie uses her charm on Daddy, he becomes helpless. BC: Are you planning to have more children? D: We are planning to have a baby next

fisher price celebrates the joy of learning Last May 26, Richprime Global Inc. celebrated the new campaign of Fisher Price, aptly titled “Joy of Learning.” The campaign, which is headed by the new Mom Ambassador (and one of BC’s Most Beautiful Moms) Audrey Tan-Zubiri, aims to spread the word on childhood development through play and toys that enable learning. Fisher Price looks to the science of play to come up with innovative toys to help your child develop his imagination. Full time mom to Maria Adriana and Juan Miguel (who was also at the event), Audrey Zubiri believes that Fisher Price helps her kids learn through play and says that she is excited to witness this. The event, which was held at Crowne Plaza, was hosted by another BC Most Beautiful Mom, Patricia Bermudez-Hizon. The event featured an intimate afternoon get-together, a Twitter game in which participants answered questions with the hashtag #FPJOL, and a raffle that gave away prizes such as Fisher Price toys and a stroller.

On May 25, BC U.S. and Philippines Editor-in-Chief Kariz Tanya Favis spoke about Postpartum Fabulousness, including how to dress comfortably for breastfeeding moms. Hugh Jackman

ugh Jackman’s role as “Wolverine” in the X-Men series of movies catapulted this Australian actor into superstardom. Most recently, we enjoyed seeing him display his singing and acting chops in Les Misérables, and he will be reprising his role as Logan, post-Charles Xavier era, in The Wolverine, which he also co-produced (talk about multi-talented!). But what we love about him (aside from his trademark frown lines between the eyebrows) is his devotion to his wife of 17 years, actress Deborra Lee Furness (they celebrate their wedding anniversary in April). Their love story began after co-starring in his first TV acting job, the Australian TV program, Corelli, where Jackman played an angry prisoner who fell in love with his counselor, played by Furness. After the throes of two miscarriages, which they consider the most painful experience they’ve gone through, they decided to adopt two children: son, Oscar Maximillian (born May 15, 2000) and daughter, Ava Eliot (born July 10, 2005). The family resides in Melbourne, but in this photo, we catch Hugh and the brood at a park in Beverly Hills. No shrimps on the barbie sightings reported there, by the way (you know you wanted that old joke). bc
