editor’s note

I’m a Fool for April

I love these following months because of the summer season. Although I’ve never been one to strut my stuff on any shores, I love that my daughters are out of school and water-bound, which is just how they like it. This year marks new personal territories once again. I was born the Year of the Dragon myself, so to have my third child born on the same (supposedly lucky) Chinese sign hopefully doubles our chances of good luck—and in this lifetime, one can never have too much. Honestly, when I pray or wish for something, I always make it a point to wish for our health, safety, and happiness first, followed by wealth, because those intangibles are truly heaven sent. There are very few times when I wish for something material, but I easily snap out of it when I look at my family. It’s hard to ask for more. On the topic of pregnancy, there’s a nice story in this issue about the do’s and don’ts during this delicate time. I am happy to find out that massages are given the green light, because my back is killing me. As I approach my 5th month, my belly is more pronounced and my apetite seems to be coming back (uh-oh). Although thanks to a recent more organic meat diet, the lbs aren’t packing as fast as I thought they would. With my first daughter, I gained 60 lbs, and with the second, let’s just say I stopped counting at 80 lbs. That’s like adding on another person to my

8

body, without increasing in height. Speaking of the hot season, we felt it was apt to do a sports issue due to the kids’ excessive energy, so we did a special double cover on two athlete dads, Vince Hizon and Tony Hawk, just for you. It’s nice to see these two handome sports experts inside their homes and coincidentally, both photographed with their sons. Patricia Hizon, being the only rose among our cover thorns, is one tough and lovely cookie herself. If you’re looking for further ideas on bonding activities with your family, we have a few suggestions in our pages. And in honor of our graduates, we have a delish sandwich that is truly a hoot to make and devour. Our resident pediatrician/contributor/holistic practitioner provides a few expert tips on how to unleash that latent doctor in you.

P.S. April 1st is the 2nd birthday of my beloved Golden Retriever, Sera. Here’s wishing her a long, healthy, safe life. Our family wouldn’t be complete without you. bcmag.ph

The Charlie was built in 1924 by the Gordon family, and as the stories go, movie great Charlie Chaplin would escape to this oasis and write his movies. It was reportedly constructed in stages, over the years of 1925 to 1946. Menachem Treivush made a re-discovery in 2002: down Sweetzer Avenue was this unique and mysterious piece of property boasting of historical value, and great promise. But while it was sadly worn down by time and was on the verge of destruction (it was actually scheduled to be replaced by new development), Treivush set on purchasing it to revive it back to the architectural gem that it was. More importantly, he had the desire to remind everyone of the property’s colorful past. “I wanted

to restore the memories of Hollywood legends who stayed there,” he explains. “The creative imprint they had on us needed to be preserved for decades to come.” And so he bought the property, and after a multi-million restoration that lasted for four and a half years, the garden-enclosed hideaway finally got its glamour and spirit back. Although a certified hot spot, it is also a big hit with families, especially among children, who love the gardens and the calm, lush atmosphere. A couple that lived in the Charlie bungalow ended up naming their baby “Charlie.” The hideaway brings you

The Goodness of Milk for Pregnant Mothers

Watching your health goes beyond pregnancy and lactation. In order to raise strong, healthy children, parents should also be in tip-top shape.

it

’s normal to feel anxious about otherwise “ordinary” things when you’re pregnant. This is especially true when it’s your first pregnancy. Suddenly, a cup of coffee becomes a toxic substance and even something as mundane as a manicure becomes something to be avoided. If it is something remotely harmful, the expecting mom would choose to be on the safe side rather than risk hurting her baby. But is a can of soda really that bad? Can we actually enjoy a massage while we’re pregnant? Dr. Catherine Maliwat-Burce, MD, ObstetricianGynecologist who is also a High risk pregnancy specialist, tackles some of the questions that pregnant women often ask. Read on for some tips on pregnancy do’s and don’ts.

Goodbye to massages and beautiful nails?

Actually, massages done by those who are especially trained to do prenatal massage is a treat that pregnant women can still enjoy. “Prenatal massage offers relief of most the common complaints during pregnancy like backaches and leg pains as well as promotes relaxation and improvement of sleep,” says Dr. Burce. You can get a massage any time during your pregnancy although some advice against getting one during the first trimester because of the risk of miscarriage. Avoid deep or “hard” massage especially in the legs and avoid massaging the abdomen. Dr. Burce also advises those suffering from preterm labor, clotting disorders, or any medical problems to avoid getting a massage throughout their pregnancy. As for your mani-pedi and facial beauty rituals, Dr. Burce gives them a go. For facial treatments though, just avoid abrasive treatments like microdermabrasion, and chemical peels using retinoids or those products containing salicylic acid. Manicures and pedicures are safe as long as the manicurist uses tools that have been well sterilized. How about my caffeine fix?

Dr. Burce shares that according to the recent committee opinion by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, moderate consumption of caffeine does not appear to cause miscarriage or preterm birth. Moderate consumption is equivalent to about 12 ounces of coffee. Caffeinated tea and most sodas have much less caffeine (less than 50mg per serving). “However, it is still unclear whether high levels of intake (more than 200 mg) have risks. My best advice is to limit your consumption,” says Dr. Burce. If you add artificial sweeteners to your cup of coffee, there is also no need to worry. “Most artificial sweeteners are

20

b c PHILIPPINES { April 2012 }

FDA approved and are considered safe during pregnancy. However, it may still be best to limit your intake to a moderate level,” shares Dr. Burce. Women with the condition phenylketonuria should avoid using aspartame and foods that contain it. You should also avoid saccharin as its safety is still in question since it crosses the placenta and may remain in the fetal tissue. Can I still fly?

Yes you can still book your airplane seats up to your 36th week of pregnancy. “However,” says Dr. Burce, “It is not recommended at ANY time during your pregnancy if you have any medical or obstetric conditions that may be affected by flight or that would require emergency care.” It is also best to check the requirements of the airline because some of them require medical certificates from your OB-GYN. Here are some tips for a more comfortable trip: 1. Book an aisle seat so you can stretch your legs 2. Avoid gasproducing foods and carbonated drinks before the flight 3. Wear your seatbelt at all times but be sure it is placed below the hipbones, below the belly 4. Avoid restrictive clothing 5. Keep yourself well-hydrated Will exposure to electronics be harmful?

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are areas of energy that surround any electrical device (ex: computers, TVs, mobile phones, tablets, etc.). Several studies have tried to associate exposure to EMF with pregnancy outcomes from childhood leukemia to asthma. However, Dr. Burce explains that there is still no general consensus regarding safety of prolonged exposures to electronic devices during pregnancy and more studies are needed to verify any reported ill effects. “At present, it is still advisable to simply limit your exposure,” Dr. Burce says. Are insect repellents safe?

Mosquito

repellents

like

coils, scented candles and lotions are generally safe during pregnancy. There are concerns about the chemical called DEET which is often found in commercially available repellent lotions. In the majority of the studies done however, there were no increase in birth defects noted on moms who used products with DEET. However, to stay on the safe side, simply use products with the lowest concentration of DEET. You can try applying the lotion to your clothing rather than directly to the skin. Alternative products like citronella and lavender oils are also considered safe. Taking antidepressants

There have been concerns about antidepressant drugs taken during pregnancy and rightfully so. “Antidepressants are prescription drugs that should only be used under the supervision of doctors,” warns Dr. Burce. “Whenever possible, the lowest dose of medication should be used.” Your doctor will be able to prescribe you a safe antidepressant if needed but Dr. Burce advises the expectant mom to inform her pediatrician if she is still using this in her third trimester as there could be possible withdrawal symptoms in the baby. Bloody matters

Is it safe to for pregnant moms to get a transfusion? Yes. In fact, it may even save a mother’s life when done in emergency situations like massive bleeding during birth or postpartum. What pregnant women can’t do though is to give blood. Sorry, but the Red Cross will have to do without your donation at this time. “During pregnancy, your body tries to increase the blood volume to compensate for the needs of your baby. Blood donation has the potential to deplete the body of iron which could cause anemia and could adversely affect your baby,” explains Dr. Burce. bc

dr. mom and dad: home remedies Simple and home remedies to treat the most common skin problems of kids—from chickenpox, rashes to bug bites. Easy fixes that anyone can apply quickly and inexpensively

or some of you mommies, this could be a familiar picture: red, moist, almost weeping superficial wounds all over your baby’s perineum—that part from their private parts until the buttocks area. This was what my daughter had when she was about a year old. Deep inside, I would cringe and my heart broke every time she would cry whenever she’d make wee-wee or whenever I

22

would wash her, the most gentle touch made her scream and cry in pain. Diaper rash is indeed one of the most distressing skin conditions in little children. In an article by Rania Dib, MD, a diaper rash, or diaper dermatitis, is a general term describing a number of inflammatory skin conditions that can occur in the area.

bcmag.ph

i n s t a n t cu r e

“Children have skin that is very soft and sensitive, which is why it gets irritated quite easily. I find that my children have some sort of eczema during colder seasons. There are patches of dry, scaly, itchy skin in the ankles, back of the knees, chest, and back.” The exact cause of most diaper rashes is not clear. They may possibly result from a combination of factors including wetness, friction, urine and feces, and the presence of microorganisms. Certain chemical properties in the feces (that’s poop!) irritate baby’s sensitive skin. And the wearing of diapers exposes the skin to significant wetness and change in pH levels. Prolonged wetness leads to softening of the outer, protective layer of the skin, causing it to break, resulting in painful wounds. Dr. Dib says that diaper rash is the most common dermatitis found in infancy. It has been reported that 4%-35% occur in the first two years of life and incidence triples in babies with diarrhea. It is also not unusual for every child to have at least one episode of diaper rash by the time he or she is toilet-trained. My daughter’s condition fit the diagnosis perfectly, but the treatments listed in the books were anything but. I tried a lot of them and, followed doctors’ prescriptions. Still, nothing worked. So I prayed and I focused. Finally, I asked my tita to get some guava leaves. I remember during my childhood, we used to climb guava trees nearby in the afternoon and munch on its fruits for merienda. My tita had to walk around the nearby streets to find one Guava tree! Anyway, I digress. I cleaned, crushed, and boiled the leaves. Poured the warm “tea” in a basin and gently plopped my baby girl, sans diaper, into the “bath.” We did this three times a day, for 30 minutes for about two to three weeks, always with her favorite music in the background and some toys. The nasty, painful rash started to lighten after two to three days. Then the wounds bcmag.ph

started to heal! I also switched to using cloth diapers at that time. Another light bulb flashed in my head—it was Rescue Remedy Cream. Immediately, I went to my Mama’s house and rummaged through her drawer that contained Homeopathic medicines from our childhood. This magical cream applied to my daughter’s nappy area after the guava tea bath completely healed the horrible rash in no time. The Homeopathic solution called “Rescue Remedy” was developed by Dr. Edward Bach and is composed of the essences of five flowers, which each have its own signature and represents a different emotional energy. To make the Rescue Remedy Cream, an additional flower essence was added for its cleansing attributes. Children have skin that is very soft and sensitive, which is why it gets irritated quite easily. I find that my children have some sort of eczema during colder seasons. There are patches of dry, scaly, itchy skin in the ankles, back of the knees, chest, and back. I have tried a couple of lotions, and found that Aveeno’s Intense Relief Overnight Cream gave the best results. It was very efficacious in making them scratch less, and allowed their skin to become smooth again. Another is Mustela Hydra Bebe Body Lotion and Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream, both very mild and soothing to baby’s sensitive skin. Heat Rash

Heat rash is also known as prickly heat and miliaria. It affects babies and adults alike, especially during hot, humid weather. It develops when your sweat ducts become blocked and perspiration is trapped under your skin. Symptoms may appear

as superficial blisters to deep, red lumps. Trapped sweat may cause inflammation and itching around the pores. The condition generally clears up on its own, but if the rash is more severe, then a consultation with a dermatologist is imperative, to rule out other skin disorders. In an article by Nili N. Alai, MD, FAAD, helpful practices to alleviate the discomfort include cleaning the area with mild soap and water, resting in cooler environments, wearing loose clothing, and applying over-thecounter, mild Cortisone creams on the affected area. Like the diaper rash, I also tried all kinds of ointments, to no avail. Then I discovered Aveeno soap and lotion, which relieved the itch and made the rash disappear on my kids’ skin. They also wore loose cotton clothing and had occasional soapless baths, which they enjoyed very much! You can also try Johnson’s baby bath, which is soap-free and hypoallergenic. Mosquito Bites We encourage outdoor play with our children and allow them to go to the park or play in the garden. Therefore, they are exposed to insects, plants, dust, etc. To deter insects, especially nasty mosquitoes from going anywhere near them, I apply organic citronella oil on exposed areas. I also find the mosquito pellets (available in sports outlets) very effective. I pin the pellets on their clothing in the mid back area and ankles. Around the house, I also keep a homemade room spray—citronella oil mixed with clean water in a spray bottle, which we would spray screen doors, rooms, under tables and beds, throughout the day. { April 2012 } b c PHILIPPINES

As for y l bumps, on fami any area of the body—arms, legs, stomach, chest, back, especially on the head, applying ice is always essential, and so is a detailed history of how the accident happened.

take caution in using home remedies While home remedies may be a simple, fast, and effective way to treat common illnesses, parents, nannies, and house help alike must be aware of the different myths when it comes to using various cures. Here are some that you must be aware of. Never put butter on a burn, as it will only contaminate the wound, making it a perfect place for bacteria to proliferate in. Instead, cleanse the burn with cool, running water and pat dry. Wrap the burn with a sterile bandage. If your child gets an insect bite, never pour gasoline on the wound. Contrary to popular belief that it will draw out the venom from the wound, it will only pose more health risks for your child. Don't use harmful chemicals and toxic materials. If you've heard or read of some home remedies involving toxic materials like cleaners, bleach, and the like, err on the side of safety and don't give it much thought. Instead, consult your doctor for the best remedy for any ailment you or your family is experiencing. Alternative medicines for cure. No matter how "natural" leaves and herbs may be, always consult your doctor for proper administration of such remedies.

24

b c PHILIPPINES { April 2012 }

On actual bites on the skin, I get a calamansi, cut it in half, and rub the pulpy side onto the bite. This relieves the itching and may be an antiseptic too. Other remedies to try could also be applying mint toothpaste on the bite, Lavender oil or rubbing the inside of a banana peel onto the bite likewise alleviates swelling and itchiness. When using ointments, lotions or oils, try a small amount in one area first, say your child’s forearm. Observe the area for about 15 minutes. If there is no reaction, like redness, unusual rash or blistering, then your child is not allergic to it. You may continue applying to the extremities or affected part. Scrapes and Bruises from Playing

Playing outdoors will also result in a few scrapes, bumps and bruises. I always ask my children how they got the wound or bump and where. This will give me an idea how serious the injury might be. I need to know if it was a gash from a dirty or clean surface, or a fall from a high place, or from running in the street. I usually clean the wound with soap and water. We have Nelsons Sting Gel that I apply on their scraped knees. They dislike this one particularly because “It is so OWIE! It’s more owie than an injection!” according to my five year-old boy. But as much as it painful, it is an extremely efficacious remedy, that the scrape in his knee was pink the next morning (as opposed to meaty red and inflamed the previous day), and a thin layer of membrane covered the wound. And it was no longer tender. I pointed out that the ointment works really fast, it almost makes the initial pain (which lasts for about 10 seconds, of course to little children, it may seem like forever!) almost worth it. As for bumps, on any area of the body—

arms, legs, stomach, chest, back, especially on the head, applying ice is always essential, and so is a detailed history of how the accident happened. When you are not comfortable about your child’s situation, always consult your doctor immediately. Chickenpox

According to the National Institute of Health, Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, a member of the Herpes Virus family. Chickenpox causes a red, itchy skin rash that may start on the abdomen or back and face, and then spreads to almost everywhere else on the body, including the scalp, mouth, nose, ears, and genitals. The rash begins as multiple small red bumps that resemble pimples or insect bites. They develop into blisters, then breaks, leaving open sores, which finally crust over to become dry, brown scabs. Chickenpox is highly contagious. One may get it from touching the fluids from a chickenpox blister, or if someone with the disease coughs or sneezes near you. Even those with mild illness may be contagious. An infected person is contagious one to two days before their blisters appear and remain contagious until all the blisters have crusted over. Most cases of chickenpox occur in children younger than 10. The Internet has a number of home remedies to try that relieve the itch and skin irritation. Since I have been using oatmeal preparations, the Oatmeal Bath seems to be one that’s appealing. This bath is prepared by cooking two cups of oatmeal in two liters of water for 15 minutes. This mixture is then put into a cotton cloth bag and closed off with a string tied to the top. This bag is allowed to float in a tub of warm water, and swished around until the water becomes turbid. Sort of like preparing a cup of tea! The child is then bathed in the tub, allowing the oatmeal water to cover all the Chickenpox lesions. bc

hen the family gathers for a special occasion (and even just for a simple gettogether), expect one thing—millions of photos. Especially for the ones that seldom see each other throughout the year, events that unite the entire brood are always a good opportunity for endless picture taking moments. Unfortunately, many amateur shutterbug has been disappointed by the results of those snaps: dark, unfocused, blurry, or just plain unflattering pictures.

D O - I T- Y O U RSE L F Through the Looking Glass

With the countless cameras that come out in the market today, find out which type best suits your family: Point-and-shoot

For the simplest, most compact, and most foolproof camera that allows you to literally point to your subject and push the button to shoot the picture, this is the best choice. Also great for starters and those technically challenged, not to mention those who do not want to carry bulky cameras. SLR and DSLR

If you want to take more artistic and creative pictures with your family, or capture special occasions or vacations with high-resolution snapshots, invest in SLR and DSLR cameras. Change lenses to get different effects, and learn how to adjust the shutter speed and aperture, and you're as good as a pro. Mirrorless camera

When it comes to appearance, we’re our own worst critics. The good news is, with these simple lighting strategies, you can banish your loved ones’ insecurities and snap portraits that everyone will want to frame, and you’ll surely be your family’s most sought-after photographer.

This new type of camera which increased popularity only around 2011 is the middle ground between point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras. With the body of a common compact camera but with the sensor size and interchangeable lens feature of DSLR, this is perfect for consumers who want the best of both basic and professional cameras. No matter which camera you use, make sure to back up your electronic files and precious family memories regularly to avoid the horrors of corrupted computers, lost memory cards, or stolen devices. bc TIPS FOR TAKING GOOD PHOTOS

All about the eyes:

When shooting a portrait, always make sure that the eyes are in focus and well lit. Dull, out-of-focus eyes can ruin an otherwise great photograph, whether you’re photographing people or animals. If the eyes look dull, add a little fill flash to the image to get the light in the eyes or use a reflector to bounce a little light into the face and eyes.

Glasses:

A little thin on top:

Eyeglasses reflect light, causing a lot of Lights can cause unwanted problems in portraits. If the glasses can’t be reflections on the heads of people removed, do a quick fix by moving the arms who are bald or losing their hair. of the glasses higher up on the temples so the Make sure that you don’t aim lenses angle downward slightly, so that they lights directly at the bald area, will reflect the light at a different angle and and use a soft box or other diffuser should fix the problem. If the glasses can’t be close to the subject to make the moved, try changing the angle of the light light as soft as possible. that is striking the glass.

An extra chin or two:

Some quick weight reduction:

Out-of-proportion hands:

To reduce that pesky double chin, have your subject tilt his head up slightly and photograph down at him from a slightly higher angle, making sure the main light is up high. This technique creates a bigger shadow under the chin and hides that problem area.

A low-key style, one with a darker tone overall, has more shadows that you can use to hide problem areas. By adjusting the light’s angle, you can use the shadows to hide and reveal different parts of the body, resulting in some instant weight loss.

When a subject’s hands are placed forward in the portrait, they can look bigger than they should because they end up closer to the camera. You can minimize the effect by turning the hands so that the sides face the camera, and the light illuminates the edge of the hands instead of the front or back.

“I refer to the elimination of that space of time between when we screw up and the time we realize we’ve screwed up as ‘practical enlightenment.’ For the past dozen years or so, I’ve been studying mind-brain science to see if there is a way to help us think better so we make fewer mistakes and create a better life.” a combination of brain science and value science. “Axiology,” Demarest says, “is the name of a fascinating science about how our value perceptions influence our thoughts, choices, actions, and reactions. It’s also about how value actually gets created in the world and in our lives.” The co-founder of an executive life coaching institute called Axiogenics, and co-author of the book Answering the Central Question, Demarest invites people to start thinking better by asking themselves what he calls The Central Question of life, love, and leadership. “It’s amazingly simple, but tremendously helpful.” “Whenever you’re feeling confused, upset, reactive, conflicted, confronted, or frustrated, or at anytime that you simply want to be thinking the best you can, just ask yourself, ‘What choice can I make and action can I take, in this moment, to create the greatest net value?’” His entire coaching process is based on the natural functions of the brain that allows people to make better use of the strengths and wisdom they already have to get better and better at answering The Central Question.

run the show. Case in point, do we really need to let our upset over the guy who cut us off on the way to work in the morning ruin our whole day and keep us from being as happy and productive as we could be? We get angry out of habit, but if we consciously shift our perspective from our self-centric upsets and concerns to what we value and the value we can create—then we can literally change our lives.”

“Fundamentally,” Demarest teaches, “success in life is not about the value we get, it’s about the value we create.” He claims that when people make the deliberate effort to think about it in terms of The Central Question, they naturally make fewer mistakes, make better decisions, and create greater value in life and work.

According to Demarest, The Central Question quickly helps us gain more confidence, satisfaction, joy and fulfillment. We get better in our work and in our relationships. We argue less and empower others more. Besides being more productive, we also experience more peace of mind—all by asking ourselves The Central Question and working to get better and better at answering it well.

“You see, most of us, most of the time, act out of habit. We allow ourselves to be controlled by our emotions and our ‘mental programming,’” he says. “We basically let our weakness and our self-centric perceptions of the world

When you focus on the question of what creates greater net value, you’ll develop more of that ‘practical enlightenment.’ You’ll have a greater sense of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. About Peter Demarest Peter Demarest is the co-author of the book, Answering The Central Question. He is also a co-founder and President of Axiogenics. Through research and development, he discovered the profound connection between axiology (value science) and neuroscience (brain science) and has spent more than seven years researching, developing, and testing the technology. mobile phone safety for your children

Because parents and children use cell phones for different reasons, here are useful guidelines we must follow to ensure our kids’ safety, once they go ‘mobile’ Wo r ds B Y A nn noder

“Now many parents make the decision to arm their kids with cell phones. Parents generally say they do so for safety reasons; they want to be able to reach the child anytime.”

p r e c a u t io n

an you hear me now? According to research, 22 percent of young children own a cell phone (ages 6-9), 60 percent of tweens (ages 10-14), and 84 percent of teens. Now many parents make the decision

to arm their kids with cell phones. Parents generally say they do so for safety reasons; they want to be able to reach the child anytime. Cost is also a factor. Cell phone industry experts say phones and family plans are both becoming more affordable. Also, as adults swap out their old devices for newer smart phones, it is easier to

pass down a used phone. But for children, it is all about social life. A Pew study found that half of 12- to 17-year olds sent at least 50 text messages a day and texted their friends more than they talked to them on the phone or even face to face.

Of course, owning a cell phone comes with possible outside threats. Here are 10 tips to help keep your kid safe while using a cell phone: Get Educated and Prepared.

Talk to your kids about the dangers and consequences associated with inappropriate cell phone use. Discuss topics including sexting, and texting while driving. Make sure you get caught up on the lingo of popular acronyms and initialisms. Ask your kids to save any abusive or problem messages to show an adult. Select Appropriate Phone Features.

If your child is under 10, they probably don’t need a phone with unlimited social networking or email capabilities. Likewise, the actual phone itself doesn’t need built-in features like a web browser or video messaging. For a young child, look for basic phones. Review all pre-programmed apps and phone capabilities beforehand. Use Parental Controls.

If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe. Limit Usage.

Designate time slots for talking—perhaps after homework and chores are completed, or before dinner. Don’t let constant calls interrupt family time. It’s easy for a chatty teen to cuddle up to a phone at bedtime, so check periodically. Consider Monitoring Services.

Perhaps your child is older, but you’re still not comfortable with him or her texting and emailing unmonitored. Internet and cell phone monitoring software provide parents with comprehensive alerts and reports on their child’s cell phone calls and text message activity. This allows you to keep track of when they are usbcmag.ph

ing the phone (during school hours or late at night), and who they are communicating with most frequently. Wait Before Answering.

Instruct your child not to answer calls or text messages from numbers they don’t recognize. If it is important, the caller will leave a message and then he can decide how to respond. Explain how to block calls from unwanted numbers. Preprogram numbers.

To help keep your kids safe, make sure their cell phones have all important phone numbers preprogrammed into it, so they can always get a hold of someone if they’re in trouble. Make sure kids are aware of what shortcuts or names are preprogrammed for emergencies, or for calling mom and dad, and their nanny (if they have mobile phones). Stay Organized.

Always keep your child’s cell phone charger in the same place. It’s best to find a central location—like maybe the kitchen counter, or a table by the door. Mark the end of the monthly billing cycle on a calendar to remind her how long those dwindling minutes have to last. Practice Privacy.

Tell your teen to use caution when giving out a phone number. Make sure they don’t publicize their number on the Internet or social sites like Facebook. Be Careful of Download Overload.

Fun ringtones, games, and backgrounds—oh my! But, be careful. These features can come with potential bugs or hidden fees. bc

F U N P U RS U I TS Here is a list of inexpensive options to keep your children engaged, while creating special memories for you and your family.

Take advantage of open spaces.

Visit your neighborhood park or club fields. If you are tired of your own, arrange for play dates and take turns visiting each other’s village parks. This is best done early in the morning or late afternoons to avoid the dangerous summer heat. Activities you can do other than play on the equipment: Pack breakfast or merienda for a picnic. Blow bubbles. Fly a kite. Play catch. Follow a trail. Play Hide and Seek. Look for bugs and observe their habitats. Find helicopter seeds from Mahogany trees and see who can keep theirs up in the air the longest. Make a stone sculpture by piling rocks on top of the other without falling. Bring paper and crayons and rub them on different surfaces (try leaves, bark, sidewalks). Lie on your back and watch clouds make different shapes. Wait for the stars to come out. Consider visiting public parks at Bonifacio High Street, open fields at the Fort for kite flying and Frisbee, Ayala Triangle, and La Mesa Dam.

While our zoos in the metro leave much to be desired, children and animals still really enjoy being in each other’s company. When on a zoo visit, do your own research. Most owners and head tour guides are equipped with the right information, but will not always be available (we learned this the hard way, when my son was peed on by a tiger. We found out from another zoo that this was expected territorial behavior and comes with ample warning!).

Visit a petting zoo.

Your visit may leave you wanting to do something about the state of our zoo animals, and why not? Encouraging your child to write to the owners, local government, or seek ways to help improve the bcmag.ph

zoos will be a valuable learning experience. Here are a list of zoos nearby: Ark Avilon Interactive Zoo, Tiendesitas. This zoo allows their animals to freely roam with a zookeeper. Young children should not be encouraged to pet them, if their tendency is to squeeze, pinch or hug, like mine do! There is a feeding zoo upstairs where you can buy vegetables and feed goats, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits. Manila Zoo and Botanical Garden (www.manilazoo.org) Malabon Zoo, MacArthur Highway, Potero, Malabon Avilon Zoo in Montalban (www.avilonzoo.ph)

Take a trip to a farm. My kids love farms. There is plenty of open space to run around, and do the suggested park activities with less restrictions. Best of all, there are animals to pet, feed, ride and observe. Animals kept in farms seem much happier than those we have met in the zoos. There are fruit trees and vegetable patches you can walk through, and in some cases, will even be allowed to pick from. Some farms serve their fresh produce, too!

Here are a few, within an hour from the city: Hacienda Macalauan, Andres Soriano Avenue, Barangay Mabacan, Calauan, Laguna—You can actually try milking a cow, see how milk is processed into drinking milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream! They sell their fresh products at the farm, and it tastes really good. Their green fields coupled with black and white spotted cows make you feel like you are in a milk advertisement. Sta. What to Bring When Playing Outdoors

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 50 SPF. I recommend using zinc oxide, which is less irritating, lasts longer, and does not get absorbed by the skin. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply every two hours. Apply mosquito repellant on exposed skin, clothes and socks. If you are using a DEET free repellant, reapply often. If your repellant has between 10-30% DEET, use only once a day. Wear light clothes. Shorts, leggings, cotton jogging pants, and t-shirts are ideal for outdoor romping. Bring an extra change of clothes to manage perspiration. It is important to keep hydrated. Bring bottles of water for your family and caregivers. Bring a hat, umbrella, and sunglasses to protect your little ones from overexposure to the sun. Keep hands clean before handling snacks, or after play. Bring a spray bottle of water, alcohol, or hand gel. You can never have enough baby wipes. Bring a portable potty or extra diapers. Most outdoor play areas are far from bathrooms. Pack a healthy snack. Outdoor activities burn a lot of calories. Try cubed, chilled fruit, dry cereal, pretzels, biscuits, or granola bars. { April 2012 } b c PHILIPPINES

Here is a quick list of free or inexpensive things you can do with young kids, other than shopping:

Go to a mall.

Greenbelt Mall Watch and sketch the Koi, ducks, turtles and water fountain in the outdoor pond. Catch a free concert at the park. Browse through books at Fully Booked, Powerbooks or National Bookstore. Visit the 4th floor shops for kids, which includes a Time Zone and Toys R Us. Visit the Ayala Museum. Serendra and High Street Read books at the children’s section of Fully Booked. The bookstore also serves Starbucks coffee and frozen yogurt. Enjoy the park and its playful interactive sculptures. Bring your pet dog to socialize with other dogs. Bring your child’s scooter, remote control cars or bikes. Watch how donuts are made at Krispy Kreme and enjoy free donuts after a batch is made every half hour. Take out your favorite frozen fruit-yogurt combination and pretzel at Jamba Juice, sit by the interactive fountains, or kick of your shoes and splash around! Do some fun shopping: build a stuffed toy animal at Animaland, have your daughter’s hair and nails done at Club Princess, and decorate your own cupbcmag.ph

and the FIC Ice Cream parlor.

Family-friendly restaurants: Mary Grace, Friday’s, Chelsea’s and Mamou.

Stay home.

Rockwell Rockwell is my family’s comfort mall. The kids enjoy visiting the toy store and Powerville Fun Rides on the 4th floor, making their own pizzas in Cibo Bimbi, tasting chocolate samples at Royce, and browsing through books at the National bookstore and Fully Booked. Treat yourself and your daughter to a manicure at Dashing Diva. On weekends, there is usually a jazz band or pianist on the ground floor, and delicious food sales in the center aisle. If we watch a movie, Rockwell is our first choice for security, comfort and cleanliness. Family-friendly restaurants: Pancake House, UCC, Cibo Bimbi, Burgoo, Pepper Lunch, Sumo Sam, Kuretake

Any trip outdoors can be exhausting when having to pack up young kids, strollers, their carry-on luggage, and temper tantrums. Staying put is sometimes the only activity your kids need to do, especially if they don’t get to spend much time playing with you on the weekdays. Here are some things you can make together, using common household items: Make homemade playdough, goop or slime. With a few simple kitchen ingredients, and easy recipes online, you’ll enjoy making and exploring these textures. Make some S’mores! Use a small burner (the kind you use to heat up chafing dishes) or your toaster oven to enjoy these treats. Enjoy water play. Fill a wide pail with water, throw in some recycled cups and spoons, a few splashes of color or

scent, and enjoy pouring, splashing and scooping water with your tots. Make homemade bubbles. Use liquid dish soap, some water and plastic rings (lids from icecream tubs, straws, or old bubble rings) and blow away! Use sidewalk chalk and draw murals on your garage floor or village sidewalk. Re-purpose old crayons by breaking them into tiny pieces and putting them in well-oiled muffin trays. Bake until it melts and cool. Make your own sock puppets and stage a puppet show based on your child’s favorite story. Create a scrapbook page at the end of each special day. Print a photo and have them put stickers to decorate the page. Write down any story they may have about the day. It will be well worth the effort to record your family bonding days! bc

Tips When Dining Out With Kids

Plan your outing. The best time to take little kids out to a meal is when they are well rested and ready to eat. If your child is a morning napper, the ideal time to eat out is for a late lunch. If your child is an afternoon napper, early dinner out might be a better idea. Make reservations and book highchairs in advance. Reserving tables by a sofa, window or near the entrance where your child can have some space to move is ideal. In most Japanese restaurants, you can reserve a room with no extra charge. Highchairs are in demand, so reserving one when you book will save you the trouble of waiting for one to be available. Choose a restaurant with your child’s food choices in mind. The restaurants mentioned in this article serve staple kid-friendly, and mostly healthy choices. Manage your stress and save the adventurous new restaurant for date night. Choose a restaurant that thinks of your child too. Do they have paper and crayon activities, balloons, and kiddie menus? Some have cartoons playing all day long, if this is something that will help you get through a meal! Of course, you can always bring your child’s favorite toy or an activity to do while waiting. bcmag.ph

Whole wheat bread Sliced bananas Peanut butter Cashews Ring-shaped cereal Chocolate chips or chocolate-coated raisins Chocolate syrup (for decorating) Round-shaped cookie cutters or lids of a jar (one large and one small)

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Take a slice of whole wheat bread and place it on a plate. Take your large cookie cutter and press onto the bread to create a circle. 2. Using the smaller cookie cutter, make a semi circle on the side of your rounded bread. Your piece of bread should now look like it has two spikes pointing upward. 3. Toast your bread for 30 seconds to a minute (optional). Using a knife, take some peanut butter and spread it in the middle portion of your bread, making sure that there is enough for the bananas, cereal, and cashews to stick to. 4. Take two pieces of sliced bananas and place it below the semi-circle you created. These will serve as the eyes. Place a cashew between the two banana eyes. These will serve as the owl’s nose. Take your chocolate chips or chocolate-coated raisins and put one in the center of each banana slice. 5. Take a few pieces of ring-shaped cereal and line them up along the semi-circle created earlier. This will serve as the owl’s feathers. 6. Place your owl on a large plate. Using chocolate syrup, design the plate to create a branch upon which your little owl sits. You can decorate further by adding green colored cereal as leaves on your branches. { April 2012 } b c PHILIPPINES

As sturdy and concrete as their lovely and comfy abode in Katipunan, Vince and Patricia Hizon’s marriage vow was kept intact for 8 long years because of their wonderful relationship with God. Two years ago, the couple became Born-Again Christians—which made their bond even stronger. For the duo, it is very crucial to make the right decisions, especially when dealing with family matters. Being both in the limelight, coupled with responsibilities and advocacies, it is a huge challenge for them to balance their career and family life.

F

or Vince Hizon, doing things in accordance with God’s will creates a lot of difference in his life. “I am a self-confessed go-getter. I know that I can do a lot of things, but I am not perfect. God is perfect; if we do things in His way, we will walk in the right direction.” A sharp outside shooter with a natural charisma for basketball fans, Vince played professional basketball for several years, both in the Philippines and in the U.S. He had played for Purefoods, Red Bull, and crowd favorite, Ginebra. He was given a moniker, Vince “The Prince” for being a heartthrob on the court. His achievements in his stellar 11-year basketball career include one PBL title, four PBA titles, one gold medal for the Southeast Asian Games, and one title for the USBL Championship. In 1997, he received the PBA Mythical Five award.

Vince admits that he had received the worst rumors that would usually involve his basketball skills and in some instances, malicious news linking him to women. When he looks back, he would just say that these have made him a better person, which translates into being a better husband and father to his family. Just like Vince, Patricia is a go-getter. Patricia started as a newscaster for the morning newsbreak on PTV 4, now NBN. After some time, she was asked to try sportscasting, until she found herself covering the Sydney Olympics, which became the stepping stone in her career. To date, she is the first and only female sports anchor in the country. Back in June 8, 2003, the first-ever wedding proposal was made at the now Smart Araneta Coliseum. Eight years after their marriage, Vince Hizon is enthusiastic to talk about the married life he has been meaningfully sharing with his wife.

vince hizon Katherine: How long did you plan your wedding proposal in Araneta? Vince Hizon: It took months. I had

to talk to the network, the team, and the league. Work it out with the TV director. I did it very publicly because I want to show that there is no slim shade of doubt in my wedding proposal. I am just very glad that she said yes, because if not, I might be living in shame. (Laughs)

K: After being married to Patricia for eight years, what are the new things that you’ve discovered about her? V: After you get over the honeymoon

period, you will realize that there is no perfect marriage, but just the same, we still manage to keep a wonderful relationship as days go by. I have discovered a lot of positive things about her. I really admire her patience in dealing with things. Our faith in God has deepened, and it has been excellent.

K: How is she as a wife? V: I am very lucky to have

a wife like her. She understands that I am a very busy guy, maybe because we are both competitive. We both do a lot of meaningful things. In a marriage, you go through the honeymoon phase, and there is also the itch phase. We are in the phase where our kids are getting older, and this challenges us to understand each other more. We do it the Christian way. K: How is she as a mother? V: She is phenomenal.

She spends time with the kids despite her busy schedule. One day, I was just surprised that she brought the kids somewhere for some educational stuff. She is very spontaneous.

K: What are your usual activities with your family? V: Eat meals together, read the bible,

go to restaurants, and play golf, baseball, and Frisbee in our yard here.

{Though Vince grew up in the U.S., it is remarkably surprising to know that he is very Filipino in so many ways.} K: How were your growing years in the US like? V: I am very active. I play softball, foot-

ball, basketball, weights, plyometrics, and of course, basketball. We are also diverse in the family. My dad is an aeronautical engineer while my mother is a nurse. My other siblings are lawyer, engineer, realtor, and I am basketball player. K: What is the difference between the lifestyle of Americans and Filipinos? V: I think the biggest thing that I like

about family in the Philippines is their tight bond. It is so much greater than the U.S. It’s the bottom line for me. U.S is great, don’t get me wrong; it’s nice to have a drive through Starbucks and a drive through Krispy Kreme, but now we have those in the Philippines as well. But the lifestyle here in the Philippines is totally different. Like in bcmag.ph

the States, if you say “Let’s get together for Christmas,” everyone has an excuse, it’s either in-laws are coming from out of town, or someone has a ballet recital or soccer game. But here, when the patriarch or the matriarch says, “Be here on Sunday for lunch,” you better be there, you drop off all schedules that you have. For me that’s great, and my kids are picking up on that as well. We do spend a lot of time together. It’s just a greater emphasis that we do things together as a family. It is making it happen as a family. K: How Filipino are you? V: My mom is American,

while my dad is from Davao. Back in the U.S., we eat a lot of rice, and our favorite ulam is adobo. Some of us would speak Kapampangan and Bisaya. I also had a confusing college because my roommates are Ilocano. Most of the time, I didn’t understand what they’re saying. K: What other languages or dialects do you speak and understand? V: Gamay lang sa Bisaya. I can under-

stand a bit. My dad is fluent. He speaks not just Bisaya but Dabawenyo also. He also speaks Kapampangan and Ilonggo. And he knows Chinese too, because he went to Xavier. I am just pretty much good in English. I understand a bit of Spanish, Tagalog, and some Bisaya words.

K: Does Patricia teach you some Tagalog words and other languages? V: She’s very good, talk about a linguist.

didn’t know that. She can also understand Ilocano. Her English, of course, is very good. Her Tagalog is topnotch. {When they were first introduced by a common friend in 2002, they talked about their respective foundations, which is one common passion that they continue to share, now that they are already husband and wife.}

patricia hizon K: Discuss your foundations in detail. Patricia: Vince has the Vince Hizon

Foundation, which tackles education, sports, and environment issues. They have already put up computer centers in Cebu and Davao. They have also facilitated sports clinics all over the country. They are aiming for more environmental projects. My foundation is Everyday Is Your Birthday Foundation, which I started on my birthday. It encourages people to celebrate birthdays with less fortunate children. It is already 12 years old. Its name came from a child’s wish that said, “Sana ganito araw-araw.” I also have the High Five Hope Foundation. It is a sports foundation for street kids. We facilitate sports tournaments. We also give uniforms; they were also trained by professional coaches. We want to make them feel that they are real athletes. Of course, we want to inculcate in them values formation through sports. It is already three years and we have expanded to Cebu and Davao.

lete triumphed despite a limitation. In the Sydney Olympics, I had witnessed a marathon where a runner could not almost finish the run—but she fell, stood, and reached the finish line. It has made a big impact in my life.

K: How did you reach this stage of your career? P: I really take my job to heart. I am

K: Since you are the first-ever female anchor in the Philippines, what are the other firsts that you want to experience? P: I also wish to be the first Asian fe-

male anchor to cover an international tournament. I also want to see other female sportscasters to become female commentators in the future. I want to cover more sporting events, and witness triumphs of athletes. K: How does Vince support you in all your endeavors? P: I am career woman. Aside from

a very supportive husband. Some husbands limit their wives, but it was never his attitude towards me. He knows that I love working and I also need to grow as a person, that’s why he is letting me work on all these things. It’s never a financial thing. It is very important for couples to support each other’s dreams and goals. If you don’t have that, your relationship would be lost. On top of that, God is the primary reason why we have a wonderful marriage. {After a very tiring day at work, the couple simply want to relax and enjoy the serenity of their house that was built of out of love and inspiration.} K: What is your most favorite part of your house? P: There are so many parts of this house

that I like. Sometimes, I find myself sitting in the living room quiet or just playing the piano. I’m not that great of

a pianist, but I do chords on the piano. As long as I have the guitar chords and I know the song, I can play it on the piano. I like that, it’s an escape from all the tasks ahead of me. I also like our bedroom, because we love spending more time with the kids there. I also like the backyard, and the garden a lot; these are family favorites. We eat a lot in the lanai. We do so many things in the house. There are so many favorite pocket areas in the house; I can’t just name one of them because we spend so much time, like staying in the garden a lot, and having a great time in the living room and family room. We made our house big enough, wherein someone can still get private space, but not too big wherein some parts of the house are not visited and are forgotten. The design itself is very simple, the house as you can see, it’s built for open space. It’s built to let wind and air and everything else that’s natural come in. We have a lot of

A lot of the stuff that we have in the house are about our adventures, everything you see in here has some sort of meaning to us so that’s why we don’t have a lot of things–because we’ve been only been married for eight years and there’s so much more travelling to do, there’s so much more discoveries to experience, there’s so much more trinkets to buy, whenever we experience something. the house. He also does the gardening and cleaning of the garage. On top of it, they want to teach their children the values that they can learn from sports. Teaching their children to read the Bible and know God deeper is also their main goal as parents. Despite their busy schedules, they still allot adequate time with their family. “As a family, we play competitive sports, not only basketball, but also football and golf. Because in sports, you will learn a lot of things that you can use in life; you will learn to respect yourself and other people. You would also learn perseverance by not giving up. We all want these values to be inculcated in our children this early,” Patricia explains. Philippine Basketball had brought a lot of experiences and lessons to Vince. It has taught him so much about life. At the moment, he is utilizing these values

by being a good role model to their two sons, and to the people he has been helping in his foundation. He is very proud of his wife, who is the first-ever female basketball anchor in the country. He vows to support Patricia in all her future endeavors. And, as to how they have been keeping the flame of their 8-year marriage, these are their testimonies, “You must be passionate in whatever you do together, whether its sports or a family activity. Keep yourself interesting for your partner,” Patricia claims. “And it’s very important to stay fit and sexy, because when you’re fit, you are more active; thus, you can live a happier life with your family.” “Put God in the middle of everything. Talking about a perfect love with God— when we put God in the middle of our marriage, we can put things in proper perspectives,” Vince ended.} bc

“Everyday there is a funny experience with the kids. Their curiosity and thirst for knowledge never fail to amuse us.”

How did you get involved with the company?

I was invited by my business partner, Tammy Tancinco, to join her. Was it a brand you’ve always used even before you became a part of it?

Yes, I am an avid user of the brand and its products before I became part of it. I started with the Vitamin Barrier Cream, which worked great in preventing my daughter’s diaper rashes. There is another funny story behind that. It was actually my daughter’s nanny who introduced the product to me. My daughter had a really bad case of diaper rashes. She kept telling me, “We really should use Mustela because that was what my former employer used for my alaga, and my alaga never had diaper rashes,” but I refused to believe her. Instead, I went on experimenting with different brands. Finally after two weeks of searching for the product that can cure my daughter’s rashes, I told her “Sige ‘Ya, I will try Mustela.” I bought a small tube, but I was amazed by how it performed. I hoarded a lot of those, which I found out was really matipid to use, and was even able to use them for my second baby. What are your other mommy must-haves and favorite products?

Describe your role in Mustela. What is the most exciting part of your job?

I am the one in charge of operations of Mustela. But in reality, I do whatever it is that I can contribute to for the company. I have no specific role, I just do everything I can. The most exciting part of my job is meeting new people,

and being able to communicate about a brand which I love, use, and believe in. Every time I see a pregnant mom, I remember the situation I was when I was pregnant with my first child, and I know exactly what they are going through.

My Mustela must-haves, if you are having a new baby, are Dermo Cleansing Gel for Hair and Body—the bath product for hair and body of newborns and babies. This is actually used in hospital nurseries. Very mild, soap-free, paraben-, phthalate-, phenoxyethanolfree. Leaves your baby smelling fresh and sweet all day. Vitamin Barrier Cream—anti-diaper rash cream. It has zinc oxide and it is the first product I used and loved. Physiobebe No-Rinse Cleanser—for daily cleansing of face and diaper area of newborns and babies. This is 95% from natural origins. Nursing Comfort Balm—lanolin free nipple cream for breastfeeding. This really helped me with my breastfeeding. not use any nipple cream with my first born, but with my second, I did. Having sore, bleeding and painful nipples contributed a lot of stress and frustration I never imagined when I breastfed my first baby. But with my second, my experience was a totally happy one. It also helped that with my second, I know what to do and how to do it. I was able to breastfeed successfully and even got to donate breast milk to others who needed it. It felt great. Skin Freshener—alcohol-free and 95% from natural origin, this leaves the baby (and even the adults) smelling lovely all the time. Spray on the face, body, and anywhere. Use it to style baby’s hair. This is a product every mom will love to be on their babies. Stretch Marks Double Action—I wish I had known this product sooner. This really works in helping prevent the appearance of new stretch marks while pregnant. Other musthaves, I love my very reliable Steam Sterilizer from Avent. Every mom

Medela breast pump—this pump helps expresses the milk even if you are out or at work. This was my constant ‘companion’ for many months, at home, at work, in the car, malls, in my training and work meetings. Mommies should always have time for herself, to rest and not forget that although she wants to give her baby her everything, she should take care of herself first. Because a happy mommy is what the baby (and the daddy) ultimately need. All moms should invest in good products and brands for their babies. They will realize that good quality really counts for everything. Value for money is not about buying cheap, it is about spending for something which will deliver the best results. Describe your and your husband’s reac-

tion when you first found out you were going to have a child.

Pure bliss. We were so thankful and grateful to God. We waited for quite some time before getting pregnant. Biggest challenges in raising very young children?

My biggest challenge is to make sure my husband and I raise children who turn out to be God fearing, humble and good-natured individuals. We want them to be happy, prosperous, generous to those in need, and kind to others. What kind of mom are you? What kind of dad is your husband?

Just like all moms, I am a mom who puts her husband and children in her priority. I love playing with my kids and being goofy with them. I love seeing their happy faces when I make them smile or laugh. My husband is great, and is such a doting dad to the kids. He bcmag.ph

makes sure to spend time with them. Who do you run to for parenting advice?

I run to my mom, sisters, sisters-in-law, and friends who already have children. It is great when you listen to how other moms do it. It opens your perspective and makes you realize that everyone is going through the same or have gone through the same phase. Funniest experiences with your kids?

Everyday there is a funny experience with the kids. Their curiosity and thirst for knowledge never fail to amuse us. What are your favorite indoor and outdoor summer activities with the family?

We love playing with them, riding the bike, carousel, eating their favorite treats, like ice cream and French fries...My son loves ‘driving’ the car. My daughter likes playing bubbles and hide and seek. So we play their favorite activities. bc

have a Mac Family. In my entire 20 years of married life, my family has never acquired a PC as my husband, Chris Boughton, an IT geek himself, would not have it. He believed in Steve Jobs from the day Apple introduced the first Macintosh with the screen and floppy drive in one. He was a systems designer and programmer back in 1986, and he chose Mac for home use because it had the best user interface available. Chris is an early adopter; he has to have the new gadget so he can understand what he can do with it. He even bought an Apple Newton and was

one of the few people who could use it successfully. Like Steve, Chris is a semi-dictator in so far as what computer gadgets to have at home, for they think they know best. I was reflecting last night on Steve Jobs talking about connecting the dots during the commencement speech at Stanford University. While I viewed my husband’s reluctance to have a PC at home as stubbornness and dictatorial, I now connect the dots and come to understand that certain decisions need not be put out for a vote. As in life, democracy is not the best thing all of the time. bcmag.ph

“Steve Jobs is now a legend, an icon of change, a symbol of the limitless possibilities that one is capable of, if only we can strip ourselves of everything and come naked, as he says, to follow the prompting of the inner voice within us.” The Boughton Family: Chris and Linds, Francesca, 19 and Samuel, 14

Steve Jobs had a vision to change the world, and he succeeded. He didn’t believe in customer surveys, as he didn’t think that customers knew what they wanted. As a user, however, he knew what he wanted to have and to hold, and went for it. He was a ruthless dictator in pursuit of his creative ingenuity, but allowed his talented staff freedom to do their jobs. He wanted simplicity and style, and I know that he had made it his mission to enable someone like me, a nontechie person to use Apple products with ease and confidence, and enjoy them. His creations surpassed anyone’s technical expectations, and he made “insanely great” products. My children grew up with their hands on a Mac keyboard as soon as they were able to sit in front of a computer. Both children have shared the same passion that their dad has for Apple products. They are so abreast of each product, operating system, and various Apps, that they say that they can stand in an Apple Store and sell the products themselves or at the Genius Bar to assist customers. They don’t profess to know everything about the products bcmag.ph

but what they carry with them is that bit of an innate knowledge (how Steve Jobs thinks), which enables them to figuring things out instinctively. Steve Jobs’ connecting-the-dots address reminds me that indeed, everything happens for a reason. He refers to being fired by the company he co-started as one important aspect in his life that gave him a breakthrough to create something bigger by pushing his boundaries. It was when he left Apple that he set up NeXT, which was later purchased by Apple; the event that brought him back at the helm as “interim CEO.” That was in 1997, and Apple shares were US$10. In the next 14 years, Steve made the company one of the most valuable in the world, and their shares are now in the high US$300 range. Steve also founded Pixar, the most successful animation studio in the world. He sold Pixar to Walt Disney for over US$7 billion. Even as a college drop-out, a nonengineer with no management background, John Scully, former CEO of Apple once said that Steve Jobs “didn’t create anything

really, BUT he created everything.” Steve Jobs is now a legend, an icon of change, a symbol of the limitless possibilities that one is capable of, if only we can strip ourselves of everything and come naked, as he says, to follow the prompting of the inner voice within us. Looking back and as I connect the dots, I can’t blame my husband why we never had a PC at home. His loyalty and passion for beautiful things which work elegantly is for my family to emulate. bc

The Boughton family currently owns and uses: One MacBook Pro 15”, two MacBook Pro 13”, one MacBook Air, one iMac 20”, one Mac Mini, which is our in-home media server, one iPad, two iPad 2’s, one iPhone 3GS, one iPhone 4, three iPods / iPod Touch. Also lying around our apartment are, an Apple G4 Cube, a first generation (and still working) iPod, two first generation iPod shuffles and other bits and bobs of Apple technology. april 2012 philippines

Events that promote the betterment of one’s self and environment Celebrating skin health It was an evening of inspired learning and relaxed fun as Physiogel celebrated the brand’s relaunch in the Philippines. Their line of moisturizers and cleansers promise to lock in moisture and help repair skin, and has been made more accessible with its new price point. Because one out of three women have dry skin and are not aware of it, Physiogel had a skin test to check for skin’s moisture before and after applying Physiogel lotion.

The secret behind this is Physiogel’s Derma Membrane Structure (DMS) Technology that repairs the skin barrier through its lipids. Dr. Bernadette Arcilla, the brand’s Therapy Area Medical Affairs Director, gave an insightful speech on the factors that contribute to skin dryness. Product Manager Katherine Bacosa also spoke about the various campaigns that Physiogel will undertake to spread the word on proper skin moisturization through such emollients. The night was capped off with an intimate dinner and program hosted by Solenn Heussaff, who also performed a couple of engaging numbers for the audience. 1 Dra. The Peninsula Manila Hotel’s Upper Lobby was buzzing with excitement for Priscilla Meirelles-Estrada’s English tea partythemed baby shower, which also served as a charity event of sorts. In lieu of presents, donations to the non-government organization, C.R.I.B.S. Foundation were requested. Delectable delights and sweet cupcakes from Joy San Gabriel were enjoyed by guests, who also participated in fun games, including name the most baby items and name the most Hollywood celebrity moms (which we won!). A baby bingo was also held, and the ladies with creative and colorful hats competed for several “Best Hat” awards. In an exclusive interview with BC, the expecting mom shared, “I go crazy [over shopping]. I go inside this store, when I see like something, it’s so easy to swipe the credit card (laughs) and just pick things that I need and don’t need. They had this big sale in the U.S. online, so I was like, [shopping] until seven in the morning, and my husband was like, ‘You’re still awake? You’re crazy,’ and I said, ‘Wait

BC WORLD EXCLUSIVE

hawk’s eye view

Tony Hawk is synonymous to the term, “skate.” But for his three boys and daughter, “dad’s” the word

t

here was a time skating suddenly died, which resulted in Tony Hawk and his former wife living off of her salary as a manicurist. This is quite shocking, especially when you’ve become used to a successful lifestyle such as Hawk (A.K.A. “The Birdman”) probably had—being one of the best extreme sportsmen in the world. As a high school senior, Tony was already able to buy his own home at age 17, and at 19, purchased a 4 and 1/2 acre spread in nearby Fallbrook. This is where the San Diego-born sports legend built a monster skate ramp on top of a hill out of his earnings as a skater, with some extra spending money to buy his friends trips to Hawaii so they could all vacation together. He married ex-wife Cindy Dunbar in 1990 and 2 years later had their eldest son, Riley. These times were so financially difficult that Tony was then reportedly on a daily Taco Bell allowance of $5. He refinanced his first house and started a skateboard company called Birdhouse Projects. However, monetarily, the Hawk household didn’t do a 360 just yet. He and Cindy divorced two years after, and his future was so questionable that he almost decided to become a video editor for other companies. As the world’s wheel would turn, skating became a sensation once again, and in 1996, he married Erin Lee and the couple bore two sons, Spencer and Keegan. In ‘98, Tony and his family started a children’s clothing line by their same last name, and Hawk Clothing was born, and eventually acquired by Quiksilver. Tony is also divorced from Erin, and got married to another now ex wife, Lhotse Merriam in 2006. Tony and Lhotse have a daughter, Kadence, and he enjoys being an active parent to all his boys—as is evident in the ginormous trampoline in the front yard. Tony launched the Tony Hawk Foundation, which has given away more than $3.4 million to help build well over 400 skateparks around the U.S.A. The Foundation supports projects in low income areas and helps underprivileged kids. Tony is the first skater to have ever done a 900-degree aerial spin—but claims that he is not as dauntless as his youngest son, Keegan. Don’t be surprised to find that in a few years, another Hawk just may be holding that world record for his own.

Compare parenting and skateboarding.

the other things you do?

They are both challenging, but parenting is far more unpredictable. I have learned to be happy with unexpected results when it comes to parenting; skating is much more cut and dry.

Plan ahead, and prioritize my obligations.

How is it like raising three boys?

My oldest son Riley is the most avid skater, but Keegan, the youngest, is the most fearless. Keegan recently asked me to cover the living room floor with pillows so that he could jump off the balcony.

It’s hard to believe that three siblings can be so different when they share common DNA. What is effective parenting can have little effect with another. I know how to tailor my authority and advice to each one. How do you balance family time with all

Are all your boys into skateboarding? What are the most difficult stunts each one has successfully done?

Among your children, whom do you feel takes after you?

They all do in their own way. Keegan is the most determined, but I don’t remember feeling as immortal as he seems to. What are the greatest lessons you learned from your parents, which you’d like to pass on to your kids?

Believe in yourself, even if you enjoy doing something different than the status quo. What would you like to see your children become?

As someone that believed in them and enabled them to follow their dreams. which one of them would be president—so I asked them what their platforms would be—AKA their “rules.” (Tony’s disclaimer: “I did not take liberties with their wording”). Rule 1 Spencer: “That we take care of nature” Keegan: “Everyone can do whatever they want” Rule 2 Spencer: “That everyone treats each other with kindness” Keegan: “Nobody has to work” Rule 3 Spencer: “That everyone gets a good education” Keegan: “Everything is made of clay” It was decided that Spencer could be president of the United States, and Keegan could be president of a European circus. dren, so we decided to make our own. What are your plans to further build your brand?
