editor’s note

my daughter sabina and myself, behind the scenes with Josie bissett and her kids; my girls and i with the abreras at their home

because we want the person reading it to always deserve something extraordinary. The hardwork and responsibility behind making a magazine may not be obvious to people outside of the industry, but being on print has a big responsibility—and every photograph or thought we allow on ink has a point. There are sometimes errors, but we try our best to avoid and correct it.

It’s Always Happy During Holidays This is my favorite time of the year because of that universal feeling of generosity. As a child, I recall having slumbered through many Christmas Eves because I was such a heavy sleeper, but I would always wake up in the early hours—a habit I carry until today. I was the hardest person to jolt out of bed at night—which is the exact opposite of myself as a mother. I remember Christmas mornings looking thoroughly inside a stocking (not the Holiday-themed ones, just a long, sock-looking thing) to find an assortment of goodies from “Santa.” There would be a green apple or two conveniently stuck inside, which I later on realized was to create the impression of an “important,” heavy present. What struck me as an adult is the effort that my single mom with her limited resources put into the Holidays to make me feel that Santa had gone out of his way to prepare a special surprise just for me. See, this is the thing we forget about giving—it doesn’t matter what the gift is. It could be a note, do-it-yourself project, surprise visit, breakfast in bed, cash, toy, cellphone load, a new car or house—a gift signifies being remembered. It just varies corresponding to our financial situation. I want to emphasize that there shouldn’t be a reason not to give your loved ones a present. It’s ALWAYS the thought that counts.

Every individual we write a story on has a purpose, and it is primarily to inspire. Our cover family, the Abreras, is admirable because of their smarts, openness, and togetherness. It seems that Suzi and Paolo are simply meant to be together—some couples exude that vibe. All their children are absolutely darling and beautiful, just like their parents. It was unfortunate that their eldest succumbed to her fever just after we got our first shot, but I am still ecstatic at how our cover story turned out. The Tancinco and Nunez broods also opened their homes and workplace to BC. Here are two career women who make their families extremely proud. Bianca Monzon gives us a glimpse of pregnancy abroad, and in Paris at that (trés chic!). Cristina Peczon-Rodriguez writes about surviving the season with two small kids (and no help) in the US. I am no stranger to that myself. We also put together a follow-up gift guide from our last issue; tackle teaching your kids about money; keeping your pets safe at this time of year; some party conversation dos and don’ts; and delightful recipes and craft projects to jump into with the kids. I humbly offer this issue to you all, and of course, to our loving God who is the true reason for the season. I look forward to ringing in 2012 with you all.

With every issue of BC that we make, we feel that we are producing a gift. The time and effort we put into this, and the quality of our work is one we don’t compromise on,

As a mother, you want your child to hear and understand every word of love you say. But hearing loss and brain damage can get in the way of that, especially for babies who catch the bacteria that may cause both otitis media and meningitis. Otitis Media, or “luga,” is an ear infection that is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in the country,(2) while meningitis is an infection of the brain that may lead to mental retardation. Both Otitis Media and Meningitis are infections that belong to a family of diseases called pneumococcal disease. 1 out of 3 Filipino children who suffer from invasive pneumococcal disease, or IPD, will die.(3) Give your baby adequate protection against the most common bacteria causing meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, and ear infections. Ask your doctor and protect as early as 6 weeks of age.(4)

how to train your child about money (by age 6!) December to January (aka the Holiday months) is usually hard on us—especially on our wallets. But did you know that the way you were brought up as a kid could affect your current monetary habits? Experts share with us how we can avoid over-spending, not just for the holidays, but also for the rest of the year

very household is practically in debt. With such a staggering number, we should take as many preventative measures as possible to avoid being buried in a mountain of bills and IOUs. Surprisingly though, our finance classes in college are not enough to nip overspending and under-saving in the bud. Our subconscious is almost completely formed by the time we are 6 years old, and it is around this time when most of our notions about money are formed. www.bcmag.ph

s av i n g u p

A

As adults, during those moments when restraint goes out of the window, we tap into our subconscious and our deepest feelings—the ones that shaped us as youngsters—come to light. For example, pretty much all of us are taught from a young age that setting personal boundaries is selfish. When was the last time your friends or co-workers went for post-work cocktails and pressured you into going, even though you knew it was over your budget? These types of scenarios have been happening to you your entire life, and it takes practice and acceptance of these feelings to overcome these poor money habits.

N FI

ChicagoHealers.com practitioner, Dr. Julie Murphy Casserly, CFP, provides some tips to help you reflect on your financial upbringing and find ways to outgrow those immature money habits: Dig in your piggy bank.

Maybe when you were younger you saved all your Christmas gift money diligently in an increasingly hefty piggy bank, or maybe you blew it all on candy at the grocery store. Either way, childhood experiences dealing with money can subconsciously impact your spending habits as an adult. For example if peers called you “poor” at school because your parents couldn’t afford branded clothes, you may justify splurging on designer clothes now because you still have that deep-rooted insecurity about being singled out. Write down any experiences that come to your mind about money as a kid so you can start overcoming these scarring situations. Set personal boundaries.

Child peer pressure plays a big role in how we react to situations—even if you wouldn’t normally drink before prom, your friends teasing you could be an incentive to go along with it. These familiar situations are replicated in our adult life, and the only thing we can do is be aware of this and change ourselves. Next time a friend asks you out to a dinner you can’t afford, recognize your behavior patterns and hesitate before you say yes. Can you really afford this? Is it worth it? Chances are, your friend will respect your hon-

esty if you politely decline or request a less pricey alternative for a social gathering. A penny for your thoughts.

This week, while your youngsters are doing homework, spend some time reflecting on your own childhood experiences with money. Did your parents encourage you to use it a certain way? Did you have a job helping out in the family business or were paid for small errands as a kid? Journal about the things that come to mind. Take a personal inventory.

What were some of the things you wrote down? Did you quickly spend your allowance or did you tightly hold on to it? What do you feel when you remember those childhood experiences? How does that feeling shift when you think about how those experiences affect you today? Set an example.

Now that you know these things about your own childhood, make sure your kid has a healthy view on finances from a young age. Discuss the importance of generosity and being grateful for what you have and the fact that happiness does not come from material satisfaction.

The deep-rooted anxiety many of us feel about money is hard to kick, especially if your financial situation as a child wasn’t as sunny as The Wonder Years. So why is this anxiety so hard to let go of? Most unhealthy behaviors are the result of two types of internal emotional conflict: having needs that aren’t met or having trouble setting personal boundaries. When you look over the things you wrote down, you could take the knowledge that these insecurities stem from your monetary past to make it easier to accept and move on from it. Whenever you feel financially insecure, take a deep breath, be thankful for what you have, and realize that you’ve come a long way, baby. bc

Enjoying life doesn’t equate to spending more than what you can afford. Here are some “cheap thrills” that will teach you that good times with the family can never be bought. Instead of buying separate admissions to different recreational destinations, avail cheap discounts in family packages or group passes to the zoo, a theme park, or a museum. Check for discounts online. Subscribe to websites that feature cheap finds. Fly a kite, or set a picnic date! Prepare homemade (and healthy) snacks that the kids will enjoy.

Let’s face it; our pets can tug on heart strings like no one else can. When they make those adorable faces, we cannot help but give in. But did you know that a lot of human food is actually bad for them?

PE

Here’s a short list on foods that you should avoid feeding them.

Pets are banned from eating chocolate as it contains a toxic compound called Theobromine, which cannot be broken down and excreted by our pets as easily as we do. Be careful while munching on those nuts and make sure they don’t fall on the floor, as pets might scoop them up. The high phosphorous content in nuts can lead to bladder stones for our precious pets. Walnuts and Macadamias, specifically, are said to be poisonous to them. Garlic, onions and other rooted vegetables should also be avoided for they can cause red blood cell dam-

age as well as gastrointestinal problems. Grapes and raisins are also harmful to our furry friends; it can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Avoid grains (such as rice) because doggies don’t have a long intestinal tract like humans. Since theirs is short, it doesn’t have the ability to digest most grains and vegetable matter. A lot of our pets are actually lactoseintolerant, so avoid giving them milk and other dairy products that cause cramps and gassiness.

For the best advice on how to properly nourish and feed your pet, visit your veterinarian. prospective risks for pets include:

Decorations

Gift Wrap

Holiday Feast

Flowers

Keep holiday decorations and ornaments higher up on trees so they are not consumed by pets. If a pet decides the colorful garland or tree trim might make a tasty snack, they can and will get stuck in your pet’s intestines, necessitating immediate surgical removal. Moreover, exposed cords from electric lights can cause electrocution or oral burns if chewed.

When it’s time to pull all the gifts out of hiding to be wrapped, take care that your pet isn’t in the room as you spread out all the wrapping paper, bows and ribbons. If a cat should starting gnawing on the ribbon, it will literally “stitch” the cat’s intestines together as it is being passed through the gut. Surgery is one holiday gift you don’t want to give your family pet.

While turkey and ham make up the majority of traditional holiday meals, turkey and ham bones can become lodged in the intestines if swallowed in large pieces. Be careful that your guests don’t give in to the holiday spirit too much and choose this time to offer table scraps to your pets. Your pet could become seriously ill or even choke to death.

The poinsettias many choose to use as holiday centerpieces are toxic to most household pets if they are chewed and swallowed in large enough quantities. The level of toxicity is completely proportionate to the size and weight of your pet, but instead of doing the math on that equation, it’s better to choose other types of floral arrangements that don’t endanger your pets.

“The holidays should be a time for fun, not an unscheduled trip to the animal hospital,” Pasternak added. “If something does happen, don’t hesitate to take your pet to the nearest animal hospital, and know that if you come to ours, we work with our pet owners on affordable payment structures in emergency cases. But we’d rather not see you this season. The best holiday gift you could give your pet is a hazard-free household so they can enjoy the warmth and joy of your celebrations safely and soundly.”

who let the dogs eat? It has been found that these foods are most beneficial to our pooches: beef hearts and liver (preferably grass-fed beef), lamb hearts, chicken, pork, egg, cultured kefir, broccoli, celery, spinach, carrot, ground flax seed, bok choy, dried alfalfa meal, beef kidney, unbleached beef tripe, apple, pear, grapefruit, orange, dried kelp powder, cod liver oil, garlic, capsicum, Vitamin E supplement, Zinc oxide, Mangenous Oxide.

Colored paper, Abaca paper or textured paper, Bathroom tissue core, Sequins (any color), Old buttons, Scrap ribbons, Glue, Scissors HOW TO:

1. Take a plate or compass, and use it to draw a circle on your textured and colored papers. Create different sized circles, making sure that the next is smaller than the first circle. 2. Fold your circles in half and cut right through the diameter line. Cut jagged edges on the curved side of the half circle or tear the paper to give it a nice, textured effect. Take your half circle and bend the ends so that they meet at the center, thus creating a cone. Attach one end to the other using some tape. Do the same for the rest of your circle halves.

3. Pile up the smaller cones on top of the largest cone, making sure the next cone is smaller than the one before. Attach them to each other using some glue. You can use alternately colored paper to create any design you want. 4. The bathroom tissue core will serve as your tree trunk. Put a little glue on the rim before placing the piled up cones on the bathroom tissue core. Let it dry. 5. Embellish your tree using some sequins and old buttons (or anything decorative lying around the house), and attach them using glue. 6. Adorn your tiny tree with some scrap ribbons. Glue it on the tip of the tree and twirl it around, until it reaches the bottom. Cut out a star shape using yellow paper and glue it to the top of your tiny tree.

SANTA’s coming to town Checklist:

1 potato chip can, 2 kitchen paper towel cores, 1 sheet red and 1 sheet white felt paper, Glue, Popsicle sticks, Wiggle eyes, Cotton balls, Spring, about 1” in diameter, Masking tape, Double-sided tape, Cutter, Scissors

HOW TO:

1. Take a potato chip can and wrap the bottom part with masking tape. Using glue, wrap the uncovered part of the can with felt paper. Create a small hole on both sides of the can. 2. Use the line of the masking tape as a guide to cut out the lower part of the potato chip can, which will serve as the wobbly head. Take a strip of white felt paper and glue it to one end of Santa’s body, making sure that it overlaps the edge of the can. Cut perpendicular lines on the strip and fold them inward. 3. Take two kitchen paper towel cores and wrap them with red felt paper. Lightly flatten these wrapped rolls and insert them into the lower part of the potato chip can, with the white felt paper trimming. 4. Wrap two popsicle sticks with red felt paper, leaving the ends uncovered. Take a small strip of white felt, and attach it to the end of Santa’s sleeve. When dry, insert these into the holes at the side of the Santa’s body. Take a longer strip of white felt, and vertically attach it to Santa’s torso. 5. Using a cutter, punch a hole on both sides of the smaller can wrapped in masking tape. Insert a popsicle stick through these holes. Attach one end of the spring to the popsicle stick, using some masking tape. 6. Take the plastic lid of the can and cut a small X in the middle. Cover the torso of the Santa with the plastic lid, and insert the other end of the spring into the hole on the lid. Wrap the head of the Santa with some double-sided tape. Attach wiggle eyes, a smile and a bunch of cotton balls for his hair and beard. Create a cone for his hat using the steps in the previous craft. paris: food for the pregnant mind, body and soul Dive into the sojourn of one expectant mom, as she explores the picturesque sights and sounds of France Wo r d s a n d p h o t og r ap h s b y B ianca M onzon - C ueva

Being someone who is not French, speaks limited French, and is still slowly learning to get assimilated into the local culture, there are expectedly more twists and turns to maneuver than going through the same in comfort zones like the U.S. or Philippines. As it is also my first pregnancy, the adventure is undoubtedly magnified. Here are some glimpses of what the journey of premotherhood has been like for me in the City of Light. Paris at Its Best

One of the best aspects of being pregnant in Paris is being able to take advantage of the fresh food and produce being offered in the many street markets of the city. Where we live in the 5th arrondissement, we are lucky to enjoy this along Rue Mouffetard, where there are several boulangeries

Fresh food markets:

(bakeries), fromageries (cheese mongers), boucheries (butchers), poissonneries (fisheries) and primeurs (fresh fruits/ veggies vendors) to choose from. You can hop in a shop for a freshly-baked baguette or croissants, to another for some freshly-churned fromage blanc, then to the fishery for the fresh catch of the day. Top the meal off with the many wonderful sweets/desserts at the patisserie, confiserie, or chocolatier and you’ve got yourself one contented preggy tummy! One amazing advantage of being pregnant in Paris is that people almost everywhere give you preferential treatment.

Special treatment in public spaces:

In public transportation, pregnant women have place prioritaire seating. I have found that usually, I don’t even have to ask—people courteously get up and offer me their seat, with a smile! I

have also gone shopping in extremely crowded stores and have been advised to go front-of-line at every fitting room and cashier. Same thing happens at queues outside restaurants. Also, for once, I see warm glances and smiles from people on the streets who look at my belly and seem to take joy in the fact that I am with child. Even my usually smug fruit vendor caringly smiles and reminds me that I should not be carrying anything heavy while pregnant. Museums, parks and city corners: I have

spent many afternoons just enjoying me time in my favorite parks—Jardin des Tuileries, Jardin du Palais Royal and Jardin du Luxembourg—where you can just people watch while being surrounded by the changing colors of the leaves. There are also the smaller, cowww.bcmag.ph

zier parks dotting the Marais that I absolutely adore. Read a book, listen to some music, take a stroll, enjoy some coffee—whatever simple pleasures you may want to indulge are heightened by the beauty of what’s around. Same goes for the city corners that Paris is known for—picnic by the Champ de Mars overlooking the Tour Eiffel, a sunset walk by Pont des Arts overlooking the Seine, a quick prayer in the Notre Dame or a moment spacing out at the view from the peak of the Sacre Coeur—these beautiful moments cost nothing and can do the preggy soul wonders! To add to this is the endless array of expositions and cultural happenings all around the city. And though most are not free, for the little that you pay, you can get lost for part of the day, adoring art from one corner to the other in the Louvre, Orsay, Pompidou, or smaller ones like the Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Musée de Quai Branly, Musée des Arts et Decoratifs and countless galleries to mention. Getting in your day’s quota of walking sure feels shorter when you’re admiring beautiful pieces from space to space.

1

2

Finally, just walking the streets of Paris, you will always run into cool and unexpected art—whether it be on the walls, in a newly stumbled upon gallery or by a new installation on a square. Good live music can be found everywhere. You can chance upon a typical Frenchie serenading you with an accordion in the metro, a 20-piece orchestra of students playing Suite No.3 in D Major in Place Colette, an American style jazz trio entertaining shoppers along Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, or a live sing-and-dance-along-the3

D e s t i n a t i o n : PARIS square to old French classics (think Piaf!) at Place Saint Médard after Sunday mass. Ahhh…heaven! Prenatal Paris: Well-Being for the Pregnant Parisienne

There are so many different activities offered by the City of Light to enrich the prenatal experience. Aside from the obvious childbirth, breastfeeding and newborn care classes, here are a slew of the prenatal practices that Parisiennes enjoy: Sophrologie: This method of breathing and meditation aims to relieve stress, promote relaxation and prepare you mentally for childbirth—much like hypnotherapy. These services are available through your sage-femme (midwife), a certified sophrologiste or prenatal centers/gyms.

This practice allows the future parents to communicate with the baby in the uterus through specific touches on the belly. Even the father is able to develop a relationship with the baby, and enables him to effectively assist his wife through childbirth. This training supposedly decreases the pain and difficulty of childbirth based on the understanding of how the body and baby relate, and may be continued after childbirth to encourage better communication with your baby. Haptonomy is usually exercised by a sage-femme or in certain prenatal/ maternity centers.

Haptonomie:

For pregnant ladies, they offer ateliers such as Breastfeeding 101, French for Foreign Moms, Sophrologie, Chant Prenatal and How to Carry Your Baby sessions. It’s a great place to meet moms and moms-to-be, the ambiance is calming and baby-friendly, they offer helpful leaflets for prenatal/postnatal care and activities, and across the street is a park/playground where you can take your little one for a stroll or play after the cafe. Brilliant spot! Baby Café: (facebook.com/BabyCafeFrance) is a weekly coffee get-together for Anglo moms and moms-to-be, with special focus on breastfeeding. Befittingly held at a Starbucks, it is open to anyone who wants to come. Big bonus: discourse is in English! Centre Anima: (centreanima.com) is where you can find resources offered for preggies and non-preggies alike: from sophrologie, stretching, massage, acupuncture to yoga and other forms of progressive body work—a perfect one-stop shop for prenatal well-being. Groupe Naissances: (groupenaissances.org) Focused on prenatal and childbirth care, GN is a cabinet of sagefemmes who offer sophrologie, yoga, pain management and personal midwife monitoring during and after delivery.

MESSAGE Paris: (messageparis.org) is an Anglo-moms network that offers everything from forums, Craigslistlike classifieds, members activities/events, breastfeeding and parental support, childbirth and parenting classes, expat resources, and more. Providing resources in English through hosted events, a central website, a seasonal calendar and magazine, and a comprehensive “ABC’s of Parenting in Paris” book that covers all useful prenatal/ parenting topics under the sun, this network has proven to be truly heaven-sent to moms-to-be like myself still struggling with the French language and system. This is a must-join for all English-speaking moms in Paris! MERCI, PARIS!

Nearly at the end of my prenatal journey, I must say that the experience has exceeded my expectations and has dispelled my fears of going through pregnancy in a foreign land and in an unfamiliar language, regardless of the few unavoidable challenges the situation may have come with. Thanks to the city’s many offerings, I have kept active, productive, fulfilled and well-nourished in body, mind and soul. Merci, Paris, for the wonderful pregnancy experience, and perhaps someday soon—I will go through this journey again in the beautiful City of Light! bc

surviving the holidays with kids Discover how to make the most out of the Christmas season without overtiring yourself and your family Wo r d s B Y C R I S T I N A P E C Z O N - R O D R I G U E Z

here are days that I rub my shoulder at the end of the day and wonder why it hurts so much. Then I remember that my once little black Prada bag that seemed to carry everything I needed has now morphed into a gigantic Kate Spade diaper bag. My high heels and suits have likewise been replaced by comfortable sneakers and jeans. I need to be able to chase after my wandering toddler in a flash, and Prada and heels simply no longer does it for me. Being a mother has not only forced me to change my favored bag. It has changed my life in many, many other ways. Leaving the house at the drop of a hat simply does not happen anymore. Getting said diaper bag ready filled with snacks, wipes and diapers, toys, and bottles of milk; making sure everyone has either gone to the bathroom or has a fresh diaper; grabbing my toddler and keeping him still long enough to put on his jacket and shoes on—it all becomes such a huge production number. And don’t forget the extra five minutes it takes to get my child to walk out the door, travel down our steps, and actually get into the car. Time management, tons of preparation, and very generous amounts of patience are in order when it comes to life with small kids. With the holidays around and a full social calendar this time of year, I can only tell you that as fun as it is, I am glad this only happens once a year.

b c PHILIPPINES { DECEMBER 2011 }

And so, how does one survive the holiday season with children? If you are like me, chances are you have overscheduled, gone over the top with planned preparations and in the end, will barely make it through the holidays exhausted and overtired. But here is a wakeup call for both you and I. While our children are still young and believe in Christmas magic—let’s all make a pact to try to relax and enjoy as much time with our kids, as much as they love the holidays. www.bcmag.ph

h o l i day g at h e r i n g s

This is my game plan for the holidays, which might just work for you, too. Find the fine line between over-scheduling and not scheduling enough. While it is tempting to show up at every single invitation for this Christmas event and that party for so and so, we have to remember that our kids need down time. I am very guilty of over-scheduling our weekends when my husband is home, what more when we are on holiday or vacation mode. My kids NEED their naps. And when they don’t get their rest, they become scary little monsters who make our lives miserable. It’s okay to say no once in a while and people actually do understand that life with little kids needs to move a little slower. The flip side is not scheduling enough. With your Christmas tree looking so beautiful and presents looking very interesting, it’s torture for your kids having nothing to do all day but stare at you if you have nothing planned. I try to make sure that we get out of the house at least once a day, and throw in some fun mommy-and-me activity that will help them burn some of their energy. This later rewards me as they get tuckered out enough to get a good nap after lunch—and so Mommy scores with a little downtime as well, if she is lucky. I used to be the girl who had her Christmas shopping done in August, but life with two little ones has kidnapped that person. I now at least have a very complete list prepared way ahead of time, checked twice for who is naughty and nice. And then I shop every single moment that I have free. I shop online, I shop at bazaars, I shop while the kids sleep and someone else can help watch them. One way or another, it gets done in time. But I make sure that I do not wait www.bcmag.ph

until the last moment. I used to wrap every gift meticulously. I have since discovered that giving a present in a gift bag just the exact same thing. One less thing to stress about happens to be very, very good! My children are still very young, and so at this point, they get as much joy from an expensive train set as they do from a paper plane that my husband made from junk mail. Sometimes the box a present came in is even more exciting to them than the gift itself. I will try very hard this year not to go over the top with their Christmas presents, because this will only make it harder for me to top next year. The most important thing of all though is to enjoy the season with your kids. We always say that they grow up in the blink of an eye, and it’s true. The nice thing about having little kids around is that you get to re-live the Christmas magic with them all over again. My little ones love hearing me sing Christmas carols even though I honestly can’t carry a tune. I can tell them the story of Santa Claus come down the chimney over and over again every day of the month, and they will still look at me with wide eyes filled with excitement as if they have never heard the story before. And so I hope that this year, my Christmas stockings are filled with extra patience and understanding that holidays with kids will need me to get up a little earlier, prepare a little later after they have gone to sleep, and may mean that I will have to miss a social event or two. But in the end, seeing their faces beam with pure joy every day of the season makes every effort worth it. Every single time. bc

“While our children are still young and believe in Christmas magic—let’s all make a pact to try to relax and enjoy as much time with our kids as much as they love the holidays.” Let your whole family enjoy the holidays with these tips:

Cherish Memories Ever felt so caught up in holiday preparations that you can't stop to really enjoy the season? Take a minute to pause, relax, and enjoy the company of family and friends. Decline Politely You don’t have to participate in every Christmas activity, caroling trip, gathering, or event thrown at you and your family. Don’t burn out you and your kids’ energy before the special day itself. Travel with Gear If you're looking to travel with kids this holiday season, make sure to plan it in advance, and take their favorite coloring books, games, and snacks to keep them busy on the road or airplane. Plan with the Family Get your brood together to discuss the activities you want to do to celebrate the season. Your kids will love being part of the planning process.

h o l i day g at h e r i n g s Whether you’re the smiley face among frowners, or a bit of a Depressing Dan yourself, there are tricks you can use to keep the table talk from getting lethal, says Paula Renaye, a professional life coach and author of The Hardline Self Help Handbook. “You can take control simply by thinking about what you

choose to say—or not say,” Renaye says. “If you hear yourself criticizing, judging or complaining, you’re part of the problem. Happy, self-respecting people don’t find it necessary to dump on others to make themselves feel good. “If someone else is the problem, simply don’t give them the ammunition they need,” she says.

“You can take control simply by thinking about what you choose to say—or not say,” Renaye says. “If you hear yourself criticizing, judging or complaining, you’re part of the problem. Happy, selfrespecting people don’t find it necessary to dump on others to make themselves feel good, If someone else is the problem, simply don’t give them the ammunition they need.” TRY THESE TACTICS INSTEAD

DO NOT SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE. PERIOD. AND NO ONE-DOWNING!

One-downing is the opposite of one-upping. It’s the art of coming up with something worse when someone else talks about their problem. No matter what negative thing anyone says, or how much you agree with it or don’t, resist the urge to respond with a negative—unless it makes people laugh. Instead… DODGE, DISTRACT AND DETOUR.

Turn things around with a question—a positive one. If you need to, make a “happy list” of questions before you go, so you’ll have some at the ready. And remember, there’s no law that says you have to answer a question just because someone asked it. With negative people, it’s best if you… DO NOT TALK ABOUT YOURSELF.

The only reason negative people care about what you’re up to is because they want something to ridicule, brag, or gossip about to make themselves look or feel good. Don’t go there. Whether you just filed bankruptcy or won a Nobel Prize, keep it to yourself—unless it naturally comes up. Better to find some praise for someone else than to expect someone to praise you. DO NOT SHARE YOUR WOES.

Even if you’re in a tough place and could really use a shoulder to cry on, don’t start laying your woes on a Negative Nell. Even in a weak moment, when you’ve had a terrible day, talking about it with a negative person is a bad idea. You might get a microsecond of sympathy, but that’s only so they can launch into telling you how much worse they have it. So, no talking about yourself unless you want to be the talk of the party, the family—and the town. DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND BECOME LIKE TEFLON.

Think of the times people said things that made you feel bad or made you feel the need to defend or explain yourself. If you want to avoid going down that trail again, start hacking away at the jungle of your own emotions. Get over needing anyone’s approval or blessing. If you are still waiting for negative relatives to validate you, you’re in for a long wait. Don’t set yourself up to be miserable. Get over it and go prepared. bc

he first time we met Suzi EntrataAbrera was for our Most Beautiful Moms shoot in 2010. Armed with her vibrant smile, lithe body, and exuberant personality, this time around she was extra happy as we finally got to meet her adorable daughters: Leona, Jade, and Nella, and her equally-dashing husband, Paolo Abrera, whose looks alone has immediately landed him on our upcoming list of Hautest Dads. During our afternoon get-together at their Paranaque home, we discovered how the beautiful women of the house bond over simple and heartfelt activities, and how Paolo’s artisanship has produced not just impressive furniture, lights, and shelves, but also a special ring around Suzi’s finger, which she excitedly showed off.

Unfortunately, the couple’s eldest, Leona, took a rain check for most of the shoot due to a fever. However, we got the Abreras to have some outdoor backyard bowling fun at dusk, (and we must note how the kids were applied OFF! suzi Kariz: How did your interest in sports develop early on? Suzi: When I was younger, it was

so much easier because there weren’t a lot of distractions, so we would go out. My father would always take us out and fly a kite, ride our bike. Back in the day, we were always either running, biking, or doing something outdoors, so it was innate as a child.

K: Back in the day—It shows our age. S: Exactly! K: What made you decide to pursue a career in TV?

S: I think it was by accident. Although in high school I would host school programs already, I was always that sort of person. When I was in college though, www.bcmag.ph

K: That’s where it begins. Besides, your charm is undeniable. S: Thank you! K: Biggest challenges you had to face while you were working? S: When you’re starting out, you’re

as a newscaster, and it was difficult for my personality. If you’re a newscaster, you have to be calm and poised. I think they figured it wasn’t the right one for me, kasi natataranta ako kapag may barilan, kaya out na ‘yon. I was given intro segments and feature hosting. K: Name three people you owe your success to, and the most important lessons you’ve learned from them? S: Lagot ako pag hindi ko sinabing

“my folks,” kailangan ‘yan. (Laughs) My mom’s always been into “showbiz.” So of course, any showbiz, she will support—or anything that I do, pretty much. My dad—for some odd reason—the first thing that comes to my mind is that he always tells me,

“There’s a time for everything.” Like, when you’re young, you wanna be older. Don’t rush. I always wanted to sleep over at my friend’s house. You know, just wait for your moment. Next person, in terms of my work, is Ms. Cheche Lazaro. I started out at Probe. We owe our success to her because the kind of training that we got was very special. Very tutok and we had to make do with our skills, and the learnings that we can get from each other. A lot of our friendships are still buo since our Probe days. Our barkadas are still our producers from before, they’re bosses in the industry now. And of course, I owe it to my husband and his family because they think very differently from mine. If we’re very traditional, they’re super non-traditional, so marrying both ideals from my side and his made me the kind of person that I am now. More kalmado—you’ve met my husband, he’s so zen. My personality is tempered because of him and his family. K: That’s nice. Looking at your career now, is there anything else you would like to pursue in the coming years? S: Oh my gosh, this is my super secret,

and I get so nervous when I say this: I wanna teach. I mentioned that before it was uso to be a pre-school teacher, but this time, I’m thinking of teaching college. I was asking Paolo and my other good friend, Atty. Gabby, “Can I do it?” because it’s so different, they’re adults, they’ll see right through you if you’re no good. And they’re both like, “Of course you can do it!” Actually, I feel that I am happy anywhere I am. I’ve been doing the same show, Unang Hirit, for 13 years. I’m still happy there, waking up at 3:20 in the morning. K: It’s such a success. S: It is, and the people

I work with are amazing. Other shows I’ve done before, like “Full Time Moms” for instance—we’re not on air anymore but I enjoyed that very much. If you ask me now, “Are you happy?” Yeah-huh! I feel like I may not motivated to do something else, diba? www.bcmag.ph

and has a fever so she couldn’t join us. She’s more introverted. For example, she will be playing with the kids then she will disappear for a while, play by herself or read, and then come back. I ask her “How come you don’t want to play?” She’ll say, “I just want to be quiet for a while.” Jade is the opposite. She is the one who entertains. Whoever comes to the house, whether it’s her friends or not, she’ll end up being the one entertaining that person. She’s our social butterfly. Nella, she’s hilarious—she says the funniest, craziest things, and makes her sisters laugh.

K: What’s your favorite girl bonding activities? I saw you cooking together. Cutting hair? S: Cutting hair! I’m so glad that when

I met you, you told me that you cut your girl’s hair. Na-challenge ako. So now we DECEMBER 2011 philippines

cut hair, we make merienda. Leona is the easiest to feed. She will request for some recipe that we don’t really cook. One time, she said “Mama, I wanna eat Carbonara.” We don’t cook Carbonara here, but everything’s online, and there’s simple recipes that are really good. Now I know how to make Carbonara, it was really quick, and Paolo likes it also. I also have them make Thai meatballs. Before I was so OC, I was thinking I couldn’t clean under the finger nails, so I would let them use spoons. Now I say, “Guys, just use your hands.” It’s so much nicer. Just wash your hands with soap and water. K: You gotta get dirty sometimes. S: Yes. And of course, they love makeup

K: Haha, that’s hard. How does your parenting style complement that of Paolo’s? S: Sometimes I feel that I’m the

one who’s different, since I’m more traditional. Sometimes I get surprised that nagbaliktad naman kami. There was a time that he was really strict. Our kids go to a Montessori school, so they don’t have a lot of homework. We decided they should get used to it because it’s only until grade school. So at home, he would leave lessons for them and stuff. Sometimes I would do the same. I think generally, we both see the advantages of each other’s background, in terms of what we believe in as parents. There’s hardly anything that we don’t compromise about when it comes to the girls. K: Especially since you’ve worked together. You know each other’s temper. S: At first, I wanted the kids to grow up

in a traditional school, since I came from trad. I said, “In the real world, they don’t adjust to you.” That was a source of debate and then eventually, I saw the advantages. K: How do you split parenting duties?

Suzi: Para kaming Angelina and Brad. But they make so much more money. (Laughs) K: Yeah, they make bazillions. S: Bazillions of money. Their

idea is that if someone works, the other one stays at home. It’s not long term like that, but we’re lucky nagkakataon that when I have a lot of work, his schedule is more relaxed. It’s excellent. Of course, that partner’s the one who’s lonely. Kampante ka as the parent who’s working na “Hay salamat, my partner is there.” But it’s your partner who’s actually lonely. Sometimes at night, even if you’re really sleepy, you stay up late for a bit. That’s the only time we can spend together. The next day, we’re both out of the house so early again. K: Who are your best mommy friends? S: Atty. Gabby Concepcion, I love

you, my friend! She has older kids, I get a lot of information from her— she’s a very wise woman. Sometimes I feel like, oh my gosh dapat umuwi ako, pero tumatambay ako sa bahay niya. (Laughs) She also does hosting on our show, and she’s our resident lawyer.

K: What are the three most important lessons you want your little girls to learn? S: Do whatever makes you happy,

as long as it’s legal. That’s hard also for a parent to embrace sometimes. For example, “You wanna be in a band?!” You wonder if they can make a living out of it, you have so much concerns.

K: Exactly. You worry, of course. S: So much, but that’s where my

husband’s ideals will come in—which I’m also trying to embrace. Another lesson would be to recognize that there is always a higher being than us, recognize the power of prayer and faith. That’s all in one umbrella, the ‘believe in God’ ideal. It’s hard to teach them that because sometimes, when they pray and ask for something, it doesn’t come true, diba? And yet they already prayed for it. www.bcmag.ph

K: It’s such a huge concept. S: Eventually through the years,

to understand more about God—with our help and the school’s—they’ll learn about faith and how it’s not so simple. But to never lose it. K: It’s not so simple, and yet simple. S: It’s so paradoxical in that way

that you cannot comprehend. Third lesson is to always defend each other. When I was growing up in a family of four, we always defended each other. My girls will always fight amongst each other, but they will always defend each other. K: I have girls also, and we say the same thing to them. Lastly—and this is very important. How do you maintain your figure? Any beauty tips? S: Aha. Everybody has their good parts,

so that’s what you show [shows arms]. That’s your advantage, you were born with that. You can work out really hard, but your problem areas, sorry na lang, pero yan pa rin ang naiiwan. Like, I work out a lot but my stomach will always be a little bigger than everywhere else. I work out to be healthy, and because I enjoy it. K: Three to four times a week? S: Yeah, I found that Barre

3 suited me because somebody advised me that as you get older, don’t do much jarring sports. I’m 36, so I take care of my knees. Cardio’s also important so we have a spinner bike. I’m so tamad to run, but that’s also really good. I also changed my food. We still have junk food, we always have chocolate. It’s fine, just eat it earlier in the day. At night, we have salad and whatever’s our ulam—pork chop, chicken. We snack all the time, but we make sure it’s low calorie. I eat all the time, and my bag is always filled with food, but it’s a granola bar. Never get to the point where you’re super hungry because you’ll eat rice, oily food. That’s fine too, but just once in a while like when you’re with your family and it’s a weekend. And then for the skin, arden oil is the uso thing now.

K: Is arden really all that?

After a while, it turned out OK. I apply it at night. I apply sunblock during the day because during my Game Plan days I didn’t, kasi hindi uso yung hindi malagkit. I’m paying for that now with my wrinkles.

when I finally started building up my resistance. I’d bike from my house to Tagaytay, and at a young age that felt really good. From there, I worked on a sports program called Game Plan, which was my first hosting gig. The opportunity to try all sorts of sports, it’s just something that sort of stuck, and it’s been good. K: We were just talking about how huge a show Game Plan was. P: Looking back, for its time—for

the Abreras

solution rather than being part of the problem—was the fact that it seemed to be so hard to do the right thing. A few years ago, segregating was such a pain the ass. There was no incentive into doing the right thing and now, it’s become easier and more acceptable to choose organic things, be conscious about your consumption, be conscientious about the mark that you leave on the planet. My advocacy is basically to make people realize that it doesn’t take

K: Your work is in some of our shots. P: I also do a little of metal work-

ing, blacksmithing, these are all sort of working with my hands and being handy. That’s my thing. It’s just an interest that I had and I pursued it. So I made some lights, shelves.

K: Did you make these? (Motions to the dining table) Wow. P: Well, yeah. This is from a few

years back, it’s looking a little worse for wear.

K: I love it, I wanted to make sure they were in the shot. Great hobby, I mean Jesus was a carpenter, right? What environmental causes are you most passionate about? What solutions can you offer families to help alleviate environmental damage? P: That’s also my thing. I think the

big turn off for me—when I wanted to look into how I can be part of the

happy that people are interested in being shown how they can have practical everyday solutions to some of these environmental problems that we face, and the fact that you can show them that it’s not big a deal—it’s actually cool to do it.

K: Okay. Let’s get personal. P: Alright! (Laughs) K: You’ve been married for ten years, what is your secret? Could it also be that you started as coworkers? P: I think there’s a bit of that.

K: Were you really? P: We were, and we

pressure on your “association” to make sure they segregate it when they collect it. But yeah, that might lead to your next question, where I decided to do a program called Green Living—

We got to know each other quite well before we got serious. There’s an old saying that, “You don’t really know anybody until you travel with them,” and all we did was travel together, so there’s hardly any secrets there. But for me, it’s because I continue to enjoy Suzi’s company. We make an effort to make sure that we continue to grow and complement each other. I think the day when you think you know all there is to know about each other, then what is there to know about each other? And you stop to discover, and I think life and partnership is a constant discovery. You will discover along the way that there are some things that you don’t agree on, and that’s perfectly fine. That’s part and parcel of your partner and of yourself— and vice-versa.

K: Very true. You mentioned traveling. What are your top three favorite destinations? P: We love Japan. It’s something that

Suzi and I have done every other year for a while now. This coming year is the first time we’re gonna travel with the kids to Japan. I’m fascinated with their culture.

then maybe we’ll go out and have some burgers, ice cream, or just run around outside. If we have more time than that, we’ll plan going swimming. The ultimate weekend would be spent at the beach. We love sitting out in the sun, and yeah, just taking in the fresh air. K: Funniest experiences with your kids? I love this question because it’s usually something embarrassing. P: Kids literally say the darndest things.

They say the cutest things also. There’s so many to choose from, but kids are so candid. I remember—I like to cook, and so I went to buy some meat, and I said to my eldest, “Come with me, let’s go to the meat shop.” So we went and we were waiting for our order to be filled, and this woman came in and she has the biggest boobs in the world. I could see it already. When she started to approach, I could see my daughter, and I’m like, “Oh God. She’s gonna do it. She’s gonna ask me. As soon as the woman comes within earshot: ‘Papa, why is that woman’s boobs so big?’” (Acts out shooing away) “Let’s just get our order and get out of here!”

K: Haha, and so innocent about it. She really meant it as a question. P: Yeah, I mean, it’s not being impolite,

well, although you have to kinda say, “It’s actually impolite to do that, and there’s nothing wrong with asking a question...” Yeah, they say the darndest things.

K: Who among your kids take after you or after Suzi? P: Definitely, our eldest Leona is like

me. She’s cranky and anti-social. (Laughs) She’s also very artistic. I took up Fine Arts in college. I can see her gravitating towards that already. You get the classic artistic temper.

K: The other two? More like Suzi? P: Jade is very much like Suzi. She loves

interacting and socializing. [Jade interrupts and murmurs, “I heard that.”]

K: She heard that. P: See what I mean?

She loves to perform. She’s such a ham—very much

like Suzi in that sense. Nella, we’re still discovering—I don’t know who she takes after. K: Suzi says she’s super funny. P: She’s funny, and she’s also

the most pilya—but then she’s also the youngest. She really tests your patience, and she’s an absolute joy. When you get to my age, you think you know everything, but you don’t. Kids point that out to you. The part where she really shows you how little you know about life and how much more there is to share. K: What is your parenting style? Do you have a good cop/bad cop routine? P: Sometimes we trade places. We like

to surprise and improvise. I grew up with sort of an unusual upbringing, in that my parents were kinda hippies. (Laughs) K: In what sense? P: I hate to label,

but traditional, we certainly were not. My parents always treated us as equals. We always have a voice at home. We could question, but it never occurred to us, or to me anyway, to abuse that privilege of being able to speak, that your feelings be known. It was never a case of me bratting out. I try to give my children that opportunity and also try to temper when you do see that you’re giving them a little leeway. K: Daddy duty do you enjoy most? P: When they have homework, I

enjoy those days when you have the time to help the kids with their homework, and you still know the answers. This is before they start asking you, “I like this boy, what should I do?” K: Oh God! Those are the hard questions. P: Yeah. So I’m pretty happy answer-

ing 4 plus 4...2 times 8. Or I love it when they ask me to fix things. (Mimics daughter) “Can you make a doll house?” I’m like, “Uh, okay.” (Laughs)

K: [Mocks] Oh, what a pain it must be for you! (Laughs) P: Yeah, come on let’s make a doll

house! I enjoy being their dad.

Describe the moment you found out you were going to be a mom for the first time.

I can’t really think of a word to describe how happy I was when I found out I was pregnant. When we found out we were gonna have a baby, we were in Greece. So the first thing we did, we bought a Greece shirt for our baby. Marco was a honeymoon baby so it was really exciting to be coming back and having wonderful news to tell our family. What do you usually do to bond with your kids?

Playing with them, like really going into their world and playing with them. We could be in a race track today, and be in the island of Sodor with Thomas and his friends tomorrow. Taking a walk in the park. Favorite time is nighttime when my husband reads them their bedtime stories before we all go to bed. There will be a lot of whys, laughter, hugs, and kisses. The ones we look forward to is our yearly long trip to another country, where it will be just the four of us. What is it like having two young boys and having another baby on the way?

It’s quite exhausting and challenging. Being pregnant makes me feel tired all the time. My boys can be quite active, but they knew already that there’s a baby in my tummy as early as first trimester. They can be quite understanding when I tell them that I need to rest for awhile. They will go to their

rooms to play, but will be back after a short while. Sometimes they will offer to give me massages. Although it’s really just patting my back for a few minutes, but it’s something I appreciate because after all, they are only 5 and 4 year-old boys. My husband would also take them to the park or go biking with them or do his errands with them. That gives me some time to rest or do some other stuff. Your youngest, Gian, surprisingly loves to eat vegetables. How did you introduce it to his daily meals?

Truthfully, I didn’t really aim for him to eat only vegetables. I introduced solids by following what his pediatrician would usually recommend—introducing vegetables first, gradually following with fruits and meat. He was a very picky eater, then it became easier to feed him when I realized he doesn’t like any meat on his food. He loves pandesal and cheese— different kinds of cheese. With such a busy schedule, do you still find the time to pamper yourself? What is your go-to stress reliever?

I still find time to pamper myself. I have to, for my sanity. It helps me to become a better mom, a happy mom. I believe in the equation happy mom equals happy kids, happy family. It could be anything from having dinner with my husband or dinner with my closest friends, having my nails done, massage (although can’t do much of that now), watching my fawww.bcmag.ph

vorite series, Friends or just simply being alone for awhile with a good book. What are some of your mommy must-haves?

Mustela Stelatria—I always carry this in my bag because it’s a first aid cream that relieves itchiness and redness due to mosquito/insect bites and also good for any minor skin irritation. Biotherm Lip Balm—it’s always nice to look good. Pocket Swiss Knife—very handy and has all the useful tools in mini size (one time I had to use tweezers to get the splinter on Gian’s hand while we were at a park, I’m just so happy I have my Swiss knife). Musti cologne—refreshes and lifts my mood. Band Aid—you never know when you will need it, be it for my kids’ wound or just when I’m wearing the most painful shoes. Lastly, notebook and a pen—always have these two in my bag. What is your favorite mommy duty?

Organizing their stuff. One thing in particular—organizing photos and videos. I’m the photographer and videographer in the family. I just love to document everything, that’s why I’m not usually in the picture. I’m still one of those people who would have photos printed. I would organize the prints in albums and also make sure the digital file is in place with www.bcmag.ph

backups. I’m always in the market for one of a kind picture frames which I usually buy when I go on trips. The videos, I would edit them and let the kids watch whenever they want to. Sometimes, that’s what we do after dinner, either they are flipping through the photo albums or watching their baby videos. You see, I really spent some time to think of a system on how to do it—yes, that’s my quirk. Who do you go to for parenting advice?

First of all, I always pray to God for guidance. Then I have our parents, family and friends. I don’t necessarily follow what they say, but I hear them out and just use whatever parenting advice I think is effective for our kids. I think disciplining them is a process and can be different from one child to another. We as parents have to be flexible to changes. Mostly, my parenting approach I based from experience, both personally and from other people. I’m quite fortunate that I’m very close to my brother and sisters. I have a sister who attended a parenting seminar. She would share to me what she learned and give me the book used in the seminar. It proved to be very useful. I have a sister-in-law, who’s a preschool teacher, would also give me some tips on how they handle tantrums, not sharing toys, etc. Basically, we exchange notes. bc

What is it like working with your kids?

Well, it’s both a boon and bane. They are very reliable and we know each other’s work habits. At events, I don’t treat my children differently from the rest of the Len Plus Team Members. Although sometimes, my being a mother comes out and I tend to treat them like, well, kids! How do you play a role in your children’s personal lives now that they’re all grown up?

My daughter and two sons are all now of age. They have a free rein in how they want to live their personal lives. The irony is that, the more I stay away from them, the more they come to me for advice. I think this is a good parenting tip: let your children be when they can, and they will always remember you as their mother. Also, their friends are free to come and go as far as our home is concerned, and they have also become my friends and I’m like their second mom, so I am not worried about the company they keep.

Philippines What is the best advice you could give your children in terms of pursuing their respective careers?

Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace, is an inspiration to me, and I think we can all learn from all that he has left us with. I think his sense of vision was very powerful. Vision plus determination and lots of prayers. I think this is what I’d like my children to learn when it comes to their chosen career. My parents also taught me to be respectful in every way— with other people, with yourself. So all this, I believe, would be good cornerstones not only in business, but in life. How did LEN Plus Inc. come about?

I handled golf and other sports events for Richard Gomez for 10 years. In 2003, several opportunities to organize nonsports events presented themselves at a time when I was looking for entrepreneurial ventures, since the kids were about to enter college. The stars aligned for me, and Len Plus was born. I was also beginning to think of what legacy I could leave for my children, and employment would not fill that need. Who are your clients?

Oh, my clientele runs the gamut of business: I’ve handled

cosmetics companies, watch brands, shipping, big multinationals, small ventures, even private families and individuals and LGU’s. I am not at all picky. So long as my schedule permits and there is a good fit between Len Plus and the client, it’s a go! What are your other business ventures?

I ventured into retail. Also, my family and friends know that I love to entertain and cook for small gatherings. All year round, I accommodate orders for my signature dishes. I don’t make a lot of money out of this, but it gives me pleasure that I am able to fill a happy table with my cooking. You worked with the late Douglas Quijano. What were the best lessons you’ve learned from him?

Perseverance, faith in myself. When starting, Len Plus was such a challenge. I rented a studio apartment that served as my office and it caught fire. That so depressed and unnerved me that I was ready to pack up and go back to Cagayan de Oro, where I’m from. But Tito Dougs shook me back to my senses and told me that I wasn’t the first to have fallen and about to have given up. He pushed me to not surrender. I am thankful that he was around at that time. Who knows what I

all in the family would have ended up becoming if I hadn’t listened to him? Tell us more about the Goma Cup events you organize with Richard Gomez. How did you come up with this idea?

I met Goma in 1993 at a golf course where I helped organize for a relative. We talked, and he mentioned about his dream of being able to do a celebrity golf tournament. We worked on the idea until the first Celebrity Golf, which I organized for him, came to fruition in March 9, 1994. It was a success so we continued doing it along with all the other sports events that Goma supported and helped grow in the 10 years that we worked together. There have been 15 Goma Cups so far, and it is the most successful and longest-running celebrity sports event, and we will continue doing more with Goma for as long as we can. Describe your working relationship with Richard Gomez and his wife, Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez. How did you get to know each other?

It was healthy in the sense that we have always separated business from our friendship. Now that I am on my own, they have always been so supportive of all my ventures and always make time to be part of it when they could, considering how busy the couple are. Lucy and I are both Bisaya, and I met her through Goma. We must be cosmic sisters because we hit it off so easy. Our friendship has become deeper through the years and because of this, working together has been such a breeze. I closely coordinated their wedding details with Lucy, and I think working with her on the smallest detail of that beautiful event of her life cemented our sisterhood and friendship forever. Describe your path to success. What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome?

Do you have time and space for this? Kidding aside, I don’t think I have accomplished the level of success that I have set myself for. I think you never attain success because the minute you believe you have, then you might stop striving for excellence. And your path to success is always lined with challenges, and you just roll with the punches. You never give up. You never stop. Yanee Describe your mom. What is the most inspiring thing about her?

My mom is a positive thinker, driven, focused, determined, a workaholic, career-oriented, and strong with a very good heart. I could go on because she possesses the best characteristics I know. Seeing that about her helped mold us to become good individuals. Even if we come from a broken home, that did not stop her from believing that she can do it. She was able to raise us really well, gave us a good education and life. For us, she’s the best mom any child could wish for. Martin How is your mother as a leader?

Mom is a very good leader because she always sets herself as an example which is why she is successful in having a great team under her. Rambo Funniest stories about your family?

One story I always laugh at whenever I recall it is, one weekend, we were deciding to watch a movie together while we were at the dining table. Us siblings were suggesting to watch Fantastic Four, and my mom who rarely watches movies reacted that she didn’t want that movie because she hasn’t seen Fantastic One, Two, and Three. Basically, we laugh at silly things and are more like friends when we’re together. bc

Big Miracle

Beauty and The Beast 3D

New Year’s Eve

Inspired by the true events, this movie, starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, tells us the story of an ex-couple who are reunited again by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. As the world’s attention turns to them, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.

Originally released in 1991, it grossed over $380 million worldwide and is now back in 3D for younger generations to enjoy. Belle is a bright young woman who is imprisoned in the castle of a mysterious beast and his enchanted staff of talking clocks and tea cups. She then eventually helps him understand and learn that true beauty comes from within. Beauty and the Beast is really the classic “tale as old as time.”

Gary Marshall is back with another sure fire hit set in the heart of New York, with a star-studded cast composed of Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, and Sarah Jessica Parker, among others. Through the intertwining stories of their annual rituals for New Year, this tale celebrates love and hope, brought about by the most spectacular night of the season.

When Josie Bissett first entered the studio, the ‘90s flashed before my eyes. The grunge fashion, the proliferation of hip-hop and alternative music, and of course, the TV shows. Who could forget the most fascinating apartment complex in the world? It’s hard to imagine the sweet, down-to-earth, ageless, beautiful blonde in the middle of all the catfights, betrayal, wife-swapping and coming back from the dead that Melrose Place was known for, but it is the same program that made Josie a household name. Well, to those in their late 20’s and above, at the very least. So we asked her if her kids know of Jane Mancini, her character on the series, and she says that, “They’ve never seen Melrose Place, but they know about the show and that it was a huge part of my life before they were born.”

Fast track to today, and more than 40 magazine covers after (41, counting one she did for BC US), and the same golden-haired headturner is mom to 2 kids from former husband (and Melrose co-star) Rob Estes—Mason Tru, 12, and Maya Rose, 9—two of the best-behaved and gorgeous children we’ve ever had the pleasure to dress and photograph. Although the couple is now divorced, they remain close and still get to do activities as a family, and their children love it when they are able to do so. In fact, Rob Estes’ girlfriend brought the kids to the photo shoot because Josie went ahead for hair and make-up (and we even mistook her for Josie’s sister). It was the picture of a successful, working divorce, if there ever is one. Josie is considered a “parenting expert” by many,

after penning 2 books on the subject of child-rearing called, “Little Bits of Wisdom,” and “Making Memories.” Josie says that, “They are both compilations of parenting tips and advice from real parents. Both books have been an enormous inspiration to me as a mother. The insights and wisdom I’ve gained from them has been invaluable to my journey as a parent.” She also wrote two bestsellers targeted to the children’s set. “Boogie Monster” being the more recent, and “Tickle Monster” which came to her when, “I was tickling Mason one evening and the “Tickle Monster” story literally flew out of my mouth. After I put him to sleep, I quickly wrote it down and just 7 short years later, it’s finally finished!”

I can’t imagine my life without my kids. Raising them has been the greatest joy in my life.

She is raising her darlings in her hometown Snoqualmie, a decision she made because, “Those close to me know that I am not a big fan of living in “Hollywood.” It is not a place I’ve ever wanted to raise children. Washington is where I grew up and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I love the people, the seasons, and the pace of life. It’s an incredible place to raise children. [Although] If a child has two great parents, they can be raised anywhere!” Bringing up her little marvels (the number and genders she’s always wanted) was, “Exactly what I dreamed of. I can’t imagine my life without my kids. Raising them has been the greatest joy in my life.” And they may be all the way in Snoqualmie, but parenting when you’re a pop icon still has its ups and downs. “There are a lot of perks that go along with being a celebrity, but the hardest part would be the lack of privacy.” Josie started early in the entertainment business, and even moved to Asia to get a headstart. “I knew what I wanted at a very young age. I have a fairly strong determined personality, and I’ve never liked the word, “no.” I firmly believe that if we have faith in ourselves, we can achieve anything. I have to admit, moving to Japan and LA when I was 17 was a bit scary, but thankfully everything turned out just fine!” When asked if she would approve of the same road for her kids if they asked for her blessing, she replies that, “Both kids enjoy performing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up in show business of some sort. Finding our true passions and doing what we love is

important to me, so if they find real happiness in show business then I am ok with it—as long as they go to college first!” So when she’s not filming for a TV show (she stars in a TV series called “The Secret life of the American Teenager”), or while waiting for the kids to get home from school, how does she pass the time? “I never feel like I am “waiting” for my kids to get out of school. There are always things to get done. If I happen to be “waiting,” I am usually on the school car pool lane listening to Rabbi Schumely on XM Radio, or making phone calls.” Looking at her, one would never think she gets harried on a daily basis. To this day, Josie still easily fits into a size 0 to 2—a feat for all mothers since we have the littlest time on our hands. To stay in shape, she claims that, “I workout—weight train, cardio and yoga—and eat a pretty balanced diet.” On the fashion

forefront, she says her style has, “Pretty much stayed the same, except for the fact that there are days that I don’t have time to change out of my workout clothes, and the days of lollygagging in boutiques and coffee shops with girlfriends is far and few between.” Speaking of shopping, what’s her biggest splurge for Mason and Maya? “Hmm. I can’t really think of anything major. I guess it would be their Rainbow Systems jungle gym.” She also loves the clothing brand Mini-Boden, and Burt’s Bees products for them. I mentioned that I love the names of her kids, and she says she got them from, “My best friend’s nephew’s name is “Mason.” I heard his name many years before I started having children, and always wanted it for my boy’s name. I found Maya’s name while looking in a baby name book. Aside from it being an incredibly beautiful name, we love how it sounds with Mason.” I complimented Josie on how her kids look so happy and well-adjusted. “Thank you! Rob and I love them more than anything in the world, and they both know it and feel it. Our kids come first. We also teach them the importance of communication. Especially when it comes to feelings. They know that they are safe to express whatever is going on inside them.” bc
