Dear Moms
(who eat Non-Organic Beef),
Organic
Beef comes from free-range cattle that was NOT given antibiotics, has NO added hormones, and eat nothing but organic food. It is a nutrient-dense, health-promoting food which contains more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which supports the immune system and helps fight cancer and reduce the risk of heart disease. If you’re gonna feed your kids meat, why not give them the best and healthiest? Think about it... Sincerely, The Farm

Holidaze and New Years The busiest time of the year is naturally the most important—the reason for the season, the birthday of our Lord and Savior. I have to admit the gift giving is what makes this time more enjoyable, especially for the little ones. As long as who we’re celebrating is remembered in our hearts and minds, and most imperatively, in our actions, I don’t think J.C. will mind us giving out a few presents here and there. Like other Christmases before this, I vowed to get my shopping done early. I’m doing great, because this year I’m giving out a lot of steaks and beef jerky from The Farm Organics, hehe. Thank God my husband formed the company—by the way, you should also check out the certified organic burgers on thefarm.ph/ secretmenu. Without bias, this is my favorite cheeseburger in the country, and it’s certified organic. Can’t believe I’m waxing poetic over meat. But since that will not be everyone’s cup of tea, check out our guide, since we’ve put together a list that we’ve scrupulously scoured here and all over the world, so I hope you get ideas from it. I’m looking forward to the holidays and new year celebrations because it is guaranteed, uninterrupted family time—whether you like it or not (by “not,” I am referring to seeing some undesirable relatives in the process, but that comes with the territory). I wish I could afford being with my kids 24/7, wherein all we have to do is spend quality time together—me, teaching them about life, reveling in their accomplishments, or even just talking them through a sad experience. But the reality is, like every other working parent, the basic needs of the kids (healthcare, shelter, etc) are utmost—so there’s minimal lazing in bed beside one another—but I’ll take it, still. Therefore I

always welcome my Decembers with open arms. I’m especially eager to give you an exclusive look at the home and life of our cover pair, Liz Almoro and her son, Juamee Revillame. This is the first time the model-beauty queen-businesswoman opens up, post break-up with her famous ex-husband, and move-in to their new abode. Her advice for single parents like herself are not only wise, they are practical. I’m happy and humbled that she chose BC to share herself and her most beloved with, as we could all learn from and be inspired by strong women like her. This issue is brimming with Holiday tips—from an easy-to-do, but impressive dessert table set-up that can wow your guests; staying organized during this panicked time; movies to catch up on; keeping pets safe; a spotlight on one of my favorite dress stores for my girls, Baby Fashionistas, and more. It’s also heartwarming to show you the experiences of our first 3 winners of our BC Loves ______ (we put the name of the person on the blank). I’m glad we are able to do our part by making some families’ wishes come true, especially nowadays. And although it’s not a house or car (we’ll get there yet) we’re giving out, the looks and feedback from our chosen families is unparalleled in our hearts. Merry Christmas, and the best of 2013 to you and yours. May your hearts be chockfull of love, your tummies packed with gastronomic specials, and your lives filled with answered prayers.

Deciding on your theme, look, and feel of the party should be done way ahead of time so you can incorporate the colors, fonts, and designs into your invitations. It must be coherent with your event, and must be appropriate as well for your guests. large chunk of holiday planning is coming up with a guest list that would all fit in your venue and budget for menu (this is an entirely different story altogether). But with that guest list comes the daunting task of creating invitations. Whether you’re the DIY type of mom who likes to add a personal touch to
her invitations or more of an outsourcer who wants things done by the pro’s, we have some tips on how to make your holiday party invitations flawless for the occasion. First, the basics. Your invitation should clearly indicate the details of your party. The day and date (are you sure that the 24th is a Sunday?), time, name of the place (and more importantly, the address and/or
When creating invitations, however, you can go the traditional route and make them your own using scrapbooking materials and the like, or have them printed and distributed by a third party. Some websites even offer personalization for a fee. Online invitations are also a cost-efficient way to distribute your invitations, especially if you’re pressed for time. While online invites may be easier, some feel that they lack the flare and pizazz that comes with getting the real deal in your mailbox. Invitationbox.com is here to help with some tips and tricks to getting the biggest turn out for your holiday cheer. bc
Holiday Cards – What to Know
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute! The holidays are a very
busy time for your guests. Send your invitations out 3-4 weeks ahead of time to give them ample time to RSVP.
Is Your Party Family-Friendly? Keep your holiday party invitations age-appropriate. If you’re inviting the whole family (kids too!) then be sure to use appropriate images and language—reserve the martini reference for your adult-only New Year’s bash! Don’t Ferget 2 Spell Ch√! The most common holiday misspelled words – Hors d’oeuvres, Cocktails, Christmas. Data entry applications such as Word can

easily help you check your spelling with a click of a button. Make sure you pluralize your name correctly. The Jones Family’s family card should read “Merry Christmas from the Joneses”. Also remember that apostrophes are only necessary to show ownership. Jones’? Joneses? Jone’s?
After You Make Your List, Check it Twice! The more cards you buy, the less it costs per card. Save yourself the guest list squeezing, and the price for costly reprints by purchasing a few more cards than you think you may need.

MAKE LISTS
Lists are the best way to start out planning your holiday event. Hatchedit.com TO DO Lists are a great way to begin keeping track of everything that needs to be done. Make lists for: Guests to invite, Menu Ideas, Decorating Ideas, Gift Ideas, and Packing (if you are travelling to a holiday event). When you have your guest list together and have sent out invitations, ask people what they would like to bring. You can use emails to communicate with your guests, or you can create a HATCHEDit.com group and let everyone chat in one place. Be sure to mention how many appetizers, side dishes or desserts you need so you don’t wind up with 10 cheese platters! Trying to juggle too many holiday events? Try using online sites and groups where you can organize your whole family, keep everyone’s schedule in order, and send cute invitations and coordinate with other members, sharing your calendar and to do lists with grandparents, aunts/uncles, close friends, etc. DELEGATE

termine what you can make, and when. Side dishes and salads can be prepared a day in advance, as can most breads and desserts. If you are having a lot of people over, and some are staying at the house, a “night before” cooking event can not only be fun, but encourages everyone to help out. Assign a dish to everyone who is available and get a good bottle of wine, some holiday tunes - and you’ll be surprised at how much more pleasant preparation can be! SHOPPING
With your lists organized, you can do your shopping a little at a time. Wine and beverages can be purchased weeks in advance. Likewise with gifts, if you know what you need to purchase you can take advantage of special deals gift shopping, whether it’s for hostess gifts, or holiday gifts for the family. HAVE FUN!
Consider what the kids can do to pitch in. Holidays at home are only as special as you make them. Memories of helping set the table or making the decorations are things that your children will remember forever. There are some great, simple places to find projects for kids while they sit at the kitchen table
watching Holiday television specials. Those are the little moments that make the holidays special. Looking for some great craft ideas? There are bloggers out there that have some great, easy, and kid-friendly craft suggestions for the holidays. The best way to find them? Do a Pinterest search for Christmas crafts, or whatever your holiday celebration may be. Don’t have time to make your own decorations? Buy them from some of the best crafters on the planet on Etsy (or Multiply) or head to your nearest department store, gift shop and the like, and get inspired with ideas. bc

hristy Turlington-Burns, best known as the face of Calvin Klein for 20 years, puts a spotlight on a cause that matter to her deeply, while collaborating with one of the world’s most recognized brands in baby carriers.
Borne out of a personal desire for mobility and comfort, allowing parents to tackle life while maintaining a close and natural bond with their baby and toddler, ERGObaby carriers and products apply proper ergonomics to keep children close and comforted, while helping parents stay strong, comfortable, and able. Many parents swear by its amazing features, all of which combine to greatly help

alleviate back pain—the number 1 complaint when carrying a child for longer periods. Baby carriers are extremely handy and beneficial when one travels or needs to be mobile without extra help, as it allows the caregiver to be handsfree, therefore able to accomplish more, while keeping the child as safe in your arms as possible. Last October 9 at Home Studios in New York City, BC was invited to ERGObaby and Christy Turlington-Burns’ celebration of the launch of the ERGObaby guest designer series, kicking off with the model’s first collection, featuring a partnership with Turlington’s advocacy and mobilization campaign, Every Mother Counts. bcmag.ph
SPECIA L REPORT
Launched in 2010 after Turlington’s first documentary film and directorial debut, “No Woman, No Cry,” she founded Every Mother Counts (EMC), which aims to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally and engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and solutions while encouraging others to take action to improve the lives of girls and women worldwide. The world-renowned supermodel and mother of two explained in a statement, “Hundreds of thousands of women continue to die needlessly each year due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, but the truth is that we can prevent up to 90% of those deaths.” EMC is a charity organization which aims to “raise awareness and mobilizing action on maternal health among the American public, while mobilizing financial resources for maternal health and directing 100% of funds raised to effective programs.” They also seek to “encourage policymakers to bcmag.ph
demonstrate leadership on maternal health care.” ERGObaby’s Guest Designer Series will facilitate awareness and support of this vital issue through donating a portion of the proceeds of each sale directly benefiting EMC. The launch collection features two carriers, NotJust-a-Diaper Bag, and a “hands-free” Waist Pack in the “Umba” pattern, a batik method that involves a specially carved wood stamp, hot wax, and a white piece of cotton—all created by a small business woman in Togo, Africa. ERGObaby worked with The Collaborative Group, an organization that brings sustainable employment to women globally, to source design from the very regions served by the Every Mother Counts partnership. ERGObaby is distributed by Richwell Philippines, available at Rustan’s and select Baby Co. branches. The Turlington collection will hit stores in the Philippines early 2013.

the art of kids’ fashion
One children’s clothing brand has been making waves in the recent years, and we get the exclusive on the woman behind the gorgeous designs, Primrose Co-Chua P H O T O GRA P H s B Y m a r k c a b a l a n g interview BY valerie anne del castillo
Tell us more about your background in kids’ fashion. How did you get into it?
When I had my daughter, Bea, I got so excited dressing her up because she enjoyed fashion even at a very young age… but at that time, there were very few brands that make nice party clothes for girls and showing up in parties dressed in something 2 or 3 other kids were also wearing happened too many times and it was very frustrating for me. That frustration led me to hire a seamstress just so I can make the dresses that I wanted my daughter to wear. Baby Fashionistas actually started from there. Soon, people started asking if I can make something for their daughters too. As a child, were you always interested in fashion? What was your biggest dream as a little girl?
I have filled far too many notebooks with sketches. And I started really young. All my notebooks in school, even text books, they all had sketches of girls wearing dresses and

gowns. I also loved fashion magazines, thankfully, my mom loves them, too. So I always had the latest issues handy. But I never dreamed about making fashion a career. I grew up knowing that I would eventually go into the same business that my parents trained me and my siblings to run, which is pharmaceutical wholesaling, and I did that, and it is doing well under my husband’s management. But I am thankful that I have Baby Fashionistas, too. What made you decide to open up your own line of children’s clothing? How did the name “Baby Fashionistas” come about?
Baby Fashionistas [came about] because that was how they called my 3 year old daughter then, a “baby fashionista.” What are some of the obstacles you encountered when you were starting your business?
The thing is, I never planned too seriously about Baby Fashionistas as a business. It started because I loved makbcmag.ph

ing clothes for kids. So I couldn’t say there were obstacles because I really took things slow and there was never any pressure. The fact that it is doing quite well and I am actually earning from it is a very, very big bonus. From using Multiply, your brand now has several branches. How does it feel to see your work in many places and your brand expand from an online selling business to one with branches and physical stores?
Whenever I see kids wearing Baby Fashionistas’ clothes i always feel like going up to them and tell them how fab they look! And I do feel very proud to be able to make something out of a hobby, really. When I opened my first retail store in Eastwood Mall in 2009, my husband told me to start computing for Baby Fashionistas because it is now a “real” business. It is no longer “something Prim does to de-stress.” Where can we find your stores?
Baby Fashionistas can be found in Eastwood Mall, The Block SM North Edsa, Glorietta, Alabang Town Center, Lucky Chinatown Mall, Robinsons Magno-

lia, and we have franchised branches in Davao and Zamboanga. Do you have another job, apart from owning the store?
I also manage the pharmacy with my husband. You sell both customized and RTW children’s clothes. What’s the difference between the two when it comes to your fulfillment as a designer? How long does it take for you to complete one design?
I started with doing customized dresses for kids to wear to special occasions and that is always the most fun and fulfilling for me. With customized dresses we get to make princesses or fairies or even heroes and rock stars out of every child. And for 3 year olds, they do believe they are who they’re dressed as and I think, to be able to help give that experience to a child is priceless. I started the RTW line because when babyfashionistas.multiply. com started getting known, we had to turn down orders for casual clothes because labor would be about the same but we need to keep prices lower. RTW made Baby bcmag.ph
b a b y fa s h i o n i s t a s
Fashionistas accessible to moms who are in a hurry and doesn’t have time to have something customized. But of course, unlike my made-to-order line wherein anything is possible in terms of design ideas, with RTW I need to consider what would look good on most kids, what would appeal to more kids and parents, and since they are mass produced, we can’t make them too complicated because quality might suffer. So there are definitely more restrictions with RTW. What do you take into consideration when designing for moms?
They usually match or coordinate with the gowns or costumes I make for their babies. I usually won’t advise dressing the mom in exactly the same thing as the baby, although we have done some to keep with the party themes, but I usually suggest just the same color but a different cut, or the same material components but a different style and color. Who are your fashion icons? Who and bcmag.ph
what inspire you?
The designs I make for Baby Fashionistas aren’t really influenced by just one person that I look up to. I find that when it comes to designing for kids, diversity is very important, so I try to keep up to date with fashion trends worldwide and try to find ways to make them kid-friendlier. And because my clothes are really not casual, everyday clothes, they are usually bought to wear to parties and special occasions. My clients, no matter how young, like that they would always see their favorite styles that have become staples for Baby Fashionistas, but there will always be something new for them to try and they would still stand out. When you design, what kind of child, or who do you have in mind (e.g. your kids, a certain celebrity, etc.)?
When designing, I really do ask for my daughter’s opinion on new styles that I want to try. She is now 10 and she likes sketching, too. She sometimes submits her designs to me and I always consider them in coming up with my
collections, maybe tame them down a bit, but I do learn a lot about what the kids like to wear because of her. All of her designs did extremely well, she would approve the samples and actually speak with my sample makers to ensure that what she had in mind materializes. I think the reason why her designs did very well is because she is the target market and knows what she wants to see when she enters the store. And I think Baby Fashionistas’ success is largely because my daughter is very involved. What is the credo of your brand, “Baby Fashionistas”? What separates it from others?
What makes our brand different is I think we take more risks in our designs and we offer items that have never been available to kids before. We also look at the kids as our target market, kids first before the parents. And we have learned that by doing this we bring out the little girls’ love for fashion and shopping and they really enjoy visiting our stores and shopping with us. bc

's that time of year again...Thanksgiving to New Year’s is a mad dash in most households. It’s disruptive for already overly-busy people, so imagine how disruptive it is to pets. They don’t care what holiday you are observing; they just want their peace
Here are a few quick tips to keep your pets safe and less stressed over the holidays:
Create a “Safe Area”
If it is just too much commotion for your pet during festivities, then designate an area in the house as a place for your pet to camp out. An extra bedroom will work. Put some favorite toys, bedding, food, water, and if necessary, a litter box in the vicinity. Brief the Guests
If there will be a lot of people coming and going, make it clear that the dog or cat isn’t allowed to dash out the door. No one wants to be crawling through the neighbors’ bushes at midnight looking for a lost pet. Make Rules
You are not a terrible person for telling cousin Julie that it is not cool for her toddler to pull the cat’s tail. Do Not Feed the Animals
No matter how much they beg. Everyone thinks it is cute that the dog ate the candied yams until he

Put candles up high in safe locations, so they can’t be knocked over by a wagging tail or curious cat. If you use fresh greens, such as garland, make sure the plants and shrubs used are non-toxic. Don’t use real mistletoe! If you celebrate Christmas and decorate a real tree, do not put any additives in the tree water. Cats and dogs love to drink the tree water. Make sure the tree is secure and can’t topple easily. Cats love to hide in the tree. It’s so much fun! Everyone knows cats and dogs love to knock the decorations off the tree. Again, it’s highly entertaining! Sometimes they eat the decorations. We’ve all seen tinselbutt. Not pretty, as well as dangerous. With a little planning, you can make the holiday season less stressful for your pets. At least someone won’t be stressed. Happy holidays! bc

ith guests popping in (sometimes without notice), you should have a go-to area and plan of action that doesn’t require too much assistance from the househelp, who may already be doing double duty (or triple duty—wrapping presents, tending to kids on vacation, cooking up a storm for Noche Buena, etc). We chose a red and green theme because it obviously ties up with the season’s colors, and should be very easy to procure all over town, at any budget, in case you are lacking anything.
DÉCOR
First step, find a sturdy table that can hold decoration and breakables, in case you want to keep the set-up all season long. Look for décor and similar color theme items you want placed on it—for instance, we have some fake green apples bought before from AC + 632 in Greenbelt and stuck them in a flower vase, just to break an overtly Christmas theme. You can use a table runner, but for our purposes we kept it bcmag.ph
tablecloth-free since the set-up is colorful already, and in the spirit of designing with kids around, it will be hard to keep a table runner stain-free, if you want it formatted that way all December. We used excess garland and a ball ornament to spell the word “joy” on the wall, which served as a backdrop for the table, otherwise it would be an ordinary white wall. It was held up nice and tight by invisible tape from 3M by Scotch—these are great to have around the house all the time. We were gifted a 3M dispenser shaped like a high heel, and love it to bits. Remember to always light candles only when needed, and to keep away from curious little fingers.
For breakables and perishables (food and drinks which should be kept refrigerated or frozen), take them out only when guests arrive, to preserve freshness.
TABLE AND CONTAINERS
Decorate your table as you wish. We had two ball ornament trees, a Nutcracker, gathered candles, candelabras, extra garlands, and used a steel photo/accessories stand and hung candy canes from it. Get out all your old clear glass or plastic vases to use as candy containers. The transparency will not leave kids guessing or going { DECEMBER-JANUARY 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

through everything. The sooner they get the “goods,” the faster they’ll be out of the table area and away from danger that may arise due to breakables. We kept the red and green peanut M&M’s (bought from S&R) in a jar with an air-tight lid (so no ants can squeeze in, plus it keeps it crunchy). The assorted chocolate (also bought at S&R, Christmas colors, naturally), we kept in a wide-mouth vase for easy access.

TOOLS The key to creating DIY desserts is to be creative. Check out this super cute chocolate reindeer that you can prepare in seconds (and with the kids!), made of your regular Choco Mallows topped with Rold Gold. To make it more magical (and extra sweet), you can sprinkle confectioner’s sugar to make it look like snow.

For plates and bowls, we used melamine, Christmas-designed ones bought from Gourdo’s, and bamboo plates and cutlery by Bambu from Target in the US (these have dinosaur prints on them, which gives it an extra kick for the kids). Adorable table napkins from M Design from The Landmark at P39.75 per pack are extra festive.
bcmag.ph
d o - i t- y o u r s e l f Since we had extra gift tags, we used them as “plate cards” from Invitation House for P150 for 24 pieces, and mounted them on red and green popsicle sticks bought at Little Town. Plastic, Santa-designed placemats from Dimensione, set of 4 for P99.75, are easy to clean (and on the pocket). INDULGE
For breakables and perishables (food and drinks which should be kept refrigerated or frozen), take them out only when guests arrive, to preserve freshness. We made our own, extremely east version of chocolate reindeer by sticking Rold Gold pretzels atop your regular Choco Mallows. For the goodies, we bought assorted Christmas cookies for P99, and a US Christmas cakes with cupcakes P599.95,
both from S&R, but for a more gourmet and custom feel, check out Coco Cakes on Facebook, as they have delicious and well-designed cakes and cupcakes that you’ll love. For beverages, you can go the healthy route (hey, at least something on the table is!) and slurp your way through pure fruit smoothies (we get ours from thefarm.ph, because my husband is the founder), which are delicious and filling— and satisfies your sweet tooth, so you should go ahead and serve these to the kids first so they don’t overindulge on the candy. Those Mason Ball jars from True Value are around P800, and they are functional and stylish. For a quick, red beverage, there’s always strawberry-flavored Tang, which is inexpensive, but also adds to the sugar rush. bc

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) No ultimate list of holiday films would be complete without this classic from 1946. Frank Capra directs this tale about a man driven to suicide, after a series of unfortunate events feel like the final straw in a lifetime of sacrifice for family and community. Based on Philip Van Doren Stern’s short story, “The Greatest Gift,” It’s a Wonderful Life has since been recognized by the American Film Institute as among the 100 best American movies made ever.
Home Alone Series (1990) This comedy film that is an all-time family favorite centers on the adventures of 8-year old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), who is accidentally left behind when his family spends Christmas in Paris. Its three sequels managed to stick to the Christmas theme of the series and injected the same humor that viewers enjoy watching. Hard to imagine a family losing a child 3 times, (call child services STAT, please), but the movie makes for some LOLs.
The Santa Clause (1994) As if by some twist of fate, Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), a divorced father who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, is forced to assume such identity on Christmas Eve. This comedy-fantasy film shows an ordinary man’s transformation into the bearded man in a red suit—but what if he never goes back to his old body?
Love Actually (2003) Possibly the best Christmas film and soundtrack of all time. Richard Curtis’ debut film tells ten separate stories of individuals whose lives will eventually be interlinked. This romantic-comedy shows love in all its forms, and reflects the rise and fall of relationships, just as how they happen in reality.

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” by Perry Como A festive yuletide carol that lists
different gifts for each of the twelve days of Christmas, it has several variations with different items for presents.
“The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole
Nat King Cole made four recordings of this soulful tune. The original from 1946 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974, but his 1961 version is generally considered as definitive. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Destiny’s Child This cheerful track is about The First Noel by lady antebellum
It’s unclear how and when this traditional Christmas song came to be, but it is believed to have originated in France in the 15th century. It is a stunning account of Christ’s birth in six stanzas, remade marvelously by these crooners. “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby
This tune from Irving Berlin has been a beloved holiday classic since the 1940s. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Bing Crosby’s version as the best-selling single of all time. This playful holiday tune, written by James Lord Pierpont and originally published as “One Horse Open Sleigh” in 1857 was actually penned as a Thanksgiving hymn.
“Jingle Bells” by Amy Grant
“Silent Night” by Justin Bieber Writ-
ten in Austria in 1818, this popular traditional yuletide song was declared by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in March of 2011.
“Grown Up Christmas List” by Kelly Clarkson While not among the most
popular or commercially successful of holiday tracks, this makes the cut by virtue of its unique message. This melancholy tune describes an adult’s wish for intangible gifts for mankind, such as peace, love, and friendship.

Santa Clause’s fictional 9th reindeer with a luminous red nose. Gene Autry’s recording remained the second best-selling record in history until the 1980s. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams This cheerful
tune first released by Andy Williams in 1963 was listed by Billboard among the “Top 10 Holidays Songs (since 2001)” in its November 28, 2009 issue. “Little Drummer Boy?” by Richard Marx
Written by Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941, this track about a poor young boy whose only gift for Jesus is his best turn at a drum is one of the most touching holiday tunes of all time. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” by Mariah Carey Originally set to slow and
solemn music following the wishes of writer Charles Wesley, this traditional holiday tune got its current popular version when William H. Cummings adapted music from a cantata by Felix Mendelssohn to fit the words of this carol.
“Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid This iconic song was co-written by
Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 as a means to raise money for victims of the 1983 famine in Ethiopia. Geldof formed Band Aid (a group of the the most popular British and Irish acts at the time), which recorded the tune that became the biggest-selling single in UK Chart history.

The downside for my younger siblings is that they get the hand-me-downs. I’m lucky since I’m the eldest. I think the best advice for parents of girls would have to come from my parents. It’s very challenging to be a parent, more so to 6 girls, and it’s very commendable. I think raising a family this big would have to be my parents’ greatest achievement. K: What’s your day-to-day life like, and what does a logistician and licensed customs broker like yourself do? L: Every day is different for me. I
spend the day either presenting to a new prospective client, computing for duties and taxes, updating clients with the status of their shipment, or having meetings with people involved, or emailing and engaging in conference calls with our international agents abroad. K: What are the challenges you encounter in your job? L: Deadlines, I hate deadlines!
Stress from work comes from rush shipments that need to be released. But fulfillment comes from them too, once you accomplish what the client demands from us. It’s also a challenge too, to be at par with my boss/mom, since she is a tough act to follow. It’s hard to work in the family business because people

business since 2001. I took my Masters in Customs Administration to prepare for the board exam, and to qualify as a customs broker. K: What’s the most fulfilling part about your present job? L: Whenever we get to tailor fit and
accomplish the requirements of our client. At the end of the day, what’s fulfilling is that I know I’m part in continuing the legacy that my mom has established through the years. Lalaine Logistics International Inc. and Lalaine Customs Brokerage Inc., our family businesses, have been in the industry for 23 years now. My two other sisters and I who work there have grown with our employees and their families. K: How do you divide your time between your career and son? L: I’m dedicated to my job, but more
than a career woman, I’m a mother 24/7. I’ve learned when to switch on and off when it comes to work. If it’s something really important that I need to bring work home, I’ll do it. But if I know that I can delegate it and that my son needs me more that very moment, I’d do that in a heartbeat. I will drop work over my son’s milestones. We started hanging out as a group with everyone else who was in Laoag for that weekend. K: How long have you been together? What do you think is the secret to your successful relationship? said well, it’s time also for me to have my own moment. The concept was so cool and he liked it. K: What do you spend on most for Juamee? L: I think I spend most for his
extracurricular activities like having a personal tutor, private drum teacher, soccer training, and I’m about to enroll him with a pro. He wants to learn how to play golf. We also travel a lot, so most of our budget goes to that. K: Who designed your new home? What was the inspiration? L: My home is a collaboration of
the great talents of Arch. Bene Bautista, Arch. Philip Mella, and Jennifer de Dios. I consulted with them professionally for the house. I’m lucky with this team—I’m not the easiest client, but they were able to interpret my vision and my dream with the allocated budget. My friend May Te, is also helping me with the personal touches in my home. My inspiration is quite eclectic since exterior is modern contemporary, but my interior is composed of classic pieces. It reflects my love for travel and literature. I love the “old world” feel, so I ended up decorating with chandeliers, winged chairs, and other accent pieces that I got from our family travels. I realized that I have a fascination with women because I unintentionally started a collection of women in the form of art and sculptures. Having a piano is a must for me, too. insist on wearing his costume even when going to the mall. I let him be if it makes him happy, but of course, I’m strict in disciplining him when it comes to manners like saying, “Thank you!” or, “I’m sorry,” and on how he should treat people. It’s not easy to raise a child by yourself. K: For other single parents, please provide some pieces of advice that have worked for you. L: First, have faith. I believe in divine
providence. When you feel down and hopeless, lift everything else to God. As parents, it follows that we
become overprotective of our children. The thing is, we can’t be there with them every single minute of the day. Somehow, we have to let go and leave their safety and deliverance to God. Second, you’re not Superman/ Superwoman—don’t hesitate to ask for help from family and friends. It’s good to have a support group. If you’re a single mother, establish a member of the family who can stand as a father figure to your child, or a mother figure if you are a single dad—especially if the other biological parent is an absentee. I believe that this will somehow fill in the
absence. Third, pamper yourself—I always indulge in home service massages and mani-pedis. This way, you don’t really have to feel guilty about leaving your child/children at home for your “me” time. Fourth, learn to multitask. You can still accomplish a lot of things like errands, even if you bring your child along. We can’t have shifts with a partner on a regular dayto-day basis, so we have to maximize our time accomplishing things and being a parent to our child/children. We have to spend as much time with them—they need us more than anything else. bc

Loves
We are very proud and humbled to be able to give some of our readers what their hearts desire. We hope you enjoy some stories from “BC Loves,” borne out of our team wanting to do more for other families. Meet the first batch of our ‘loves’ whom we hope had a headstart on their holiday celebrations because of the generosity of some of our friends in the industry—Kariz Favis

SVETLANNA CAGASCA “I would love to have a dinner date or a movie date with my parents, my boyfriend, and my son. But you can exclude my boyfriend if it’s too pricey! Haha! He could afford to watch a movie anyway! I am such a rude girlfriend! Well, it’s not “I.” It’s “them,” my parents deserve to win a dinner or movie date. I am a teenage mother. I got pregnant and gave birth when I was 18. I am an only child, that is why my parents supported me all the way, even if I know that they got really disappointed, and it will be very hard for them to give money, since they are just earning 10-15 thousand a month. My boyfriend is still studying and is not working, hence, he is not earning money to support my son. Although recently, his mother found out that he has a kid, that’s why they started giving milk, diapers, and medicines every week. Anyway, that is a different story. Back to “Why they deserve it.” My parents have been working very hard to have food on the table, pay for my tuition fee, pay the unending and biased bills, paying debts (since
bcmag.ph
they paid half of my hospital bill when I gave birth), giving me “baon” and giving me the things that I like and also, what my son needs for his growth. I want to have dinner with them because I know they missed the old times when they can afford to eat outside, watch a movie, and just buy the clothes and stuff that they like! The dinner doesn’t have to be expensive or in a high end restaurant because we haven’t eaten at those places anyway. Good food with a cozy ambiance is enough for them! They like strolling in the mall, window shopping (Yes, that is enough for them. Drooling over stuff is enough for them. Haha!) Then eating when they feel like they’re tired or hungry. Those are the things that we usually do. I know they miss it. Please, BC Magazine! I have been very good to them. Well, not every time. But they deserve to relax, to unwind, and taste good food! I can’t afford to treat them to dinner or movie because my “baon” is just enough for my pamasahe. It is not like we are poor, but due to insufficiency of money and a lot debts to pay, they don’t have time to go out and relax.
Good luck on your 2nd Anniversary, BC Magazine! I wish you more years to come! And thank you very much for the follow on Twitter, very gorgeous mom of three, Kariz Favis! Being followed by you is a prize already. :)” We hope we were able to give Svetlanna Cagasca and her family, Rolando, Gracia, Sven, and Juan, a night to remember. They enjoyed a scrumptious dinner courtesy of Opus Restaurant and Lounge, (where the Cagascas dined on their choice of truffled broccoli soup, a salad of roast pumpkin, grilled asparagus, crispy prosciutto with creamy parmesan dressing, or prawn and scallop ravioli with fennel scented broth). Their main course was a Medalllion of Kurobota pork tenderloin with potato pave and wild mushroom fricassee and Braised veal cheeks, green pea risotto and gremolata, topped with peanut butter and jelly bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and chestnut soufflé with vanilla ice cream for dessert. BC would like to thank GP Reyes and Francesca Rivas of OPUS Restaurant and Lounge for making this possible.

XHEILA FRANCISCO “My heart will fill with happiness if I can help my 2-year old niece some treatments of her skin allergy. She’s using Cetaphil Anti-Bacterial Gentle Cleansing Bar and Johnson’s Milk Bath as her maintenance, and I can’t provide all of those because I am also the breadwinner of my family. I will be happy indeed if I can provide even some of those for her. Thank you.” Due to the kindness of Johnson & Johnson’s Ella B. Reyes, Elaine Villaverde-Pallasigui, Juni Corleto, and Kris Llanes, and Galderma/Cetaphil’s Joel Andrada, Grace Sulit, and Jade Ponoc, we were able to provide Xheila Francisco gift packs courtesy of Cetaphil (containing a Gentle Cleansing Antibacterial Bar and a skin care travel pack) and Johnson & Johnson (containing 2 large bottles of Johnson’s Baby Bath and 2 large bottles of Johnson’s Baby Milk Bath).
BARBARA CENA “I am Barbara Cena. (Which made me think I deserve your prize because of my initials which is B.C. too, LOL! ) Technically, I am a single mom from Cagayan de Oro, but I am now working here in Manila with my 5-year old daughter, Celine Georgia, as an ESL Coach and a freelance writer for a fashion website in the US. Having no nanny to take care of Celine, I bring her along with me. I also bring a heavy laptop and set of toys for her to play in the office while I am at work. It has been a bumpy ride for Celine and I, being alone with each other in the city where we don’t seem to know anybody. But it’s alright as long as we are together, and that is the most important part. I won’t get tired of doing everything that I can do for her. I had been successful in being there for her 24 hours a day, at the same time provide her the best of everything. A single working mom’s life (without a nanny) is not easy, but I can go on and on just thinking about her future.

Lately, the bag that we were using for so many months gave up on us. Torn and tattered, the sleeves are already worn out, and has become too weak to support the laptop and some of Celine’s stuff. So I am thinking, it would feel great to have a new medium-sized travelling bag, and it will definitely be an honor if I got it from you. P.S. Is it too much to ask for a lightweight second-hand laptop? Kidding! LOL! A traveling bag will do. Thank you.” BC’s Halloween Kidstock served as the perfect stage last October 28 at The Loft @ Manansala to gift Barbara Cena with a large, red traveling bag courtesy of Lassig. Her daughter, Celine, was also present, and mom and daughter went home ecstatic after the party, with a little extra something. BC would like to thank the Kenrick and Aileen Lim of Kenleen International Distribution, Inc. (the exclusive distributor of Lassig bags in the Philippines) for their generosity in making Barbara’s “BC Loves” wish come true. Here’s looking forward to making more happen!

A Bedazzling Afternoon Last October 7, the Mall of Asia Main Atrium was filled with glitz and pink as Barbie held an event titled Barbie Play With Fashion. It was an afternoon full of fun activities like Fashion Mash Up Photo Booth, Whimsy Body Glitter Art, Nail Art, Bead-ollicious and a fashion show where guests got to experience the real Barbie Closet and tried on different outfits to strut down the runway. Highlighting the fashion show was the unveiling of the Barbie Fall/Winter Collection 2012 that demonstrated the fine details of Barbie Apparel perfected by the Barbie models including those models over the past years. They were all dolled up and were grown ups now, visibly, they still managed to keep that Barbie spirit in them. The kids enjoyed the event and felt like Barbies for a day while their parents enjoyed watching and taking pictures of their children, everyone definitely had a blast! 1 Barbie models with EVP Joann Ross Yao, CEO Alberto Yao, and COO May Yao Co Say 2 Sabina Favis with Richwell Philippines COO May Yao Co Say 3 Nadine Luster, Sabrina Man, Khyle Yanong, Lourdes Yanong, Paige Rañola, Nikki Yanong 4 BC’s Editor-in-Chief Kariz Tanya Favis and May Yao Co Say 5,6,7 GMA Artists & Star Magic Talents
Have a Stunning Holiday

On November 26, Jing Monis Salon held the fourth edition of “Holidays with the Press,” a day of luxury and pampering by the Jing Monis Salon Creative team, who provided media guests with holiday salon experiences. The laidback affair was simultaneously held at all three Jing Monis Salon branches at the Bellevue Hotel in Alabang, Greenbelt, and Maxims. The skilled and accommodating staff offers services ranging from cut, color, hair and Keratin treatment, among many others. BC’s editors were treated to new hair color at the Bellevue branch, which is headed by Creative Stylist Roger Rivera and Creative Artists Alex de Lara and Mandy Sierra. As part of the salon’s services, one can order food from the hotel menu itself, making the usual wait time much easier to bear. Irish Capati of Zulusibs (the company behind Keratin complex and Macadamia Natural Oil products) was also on hand to tell us more about the products used on guests’ locks. Apart from the clean, well-designed interiors, ample selection of reading material, another bonus is their signature, delicious thirst-quenching pandaninfused iced tea. Guests are accommodated in comfortable white seats highlighted by ample lighting and adorned with a full-length mirror. The stylists are well-trained, without being overly chatty—exactly how one wants some “me time” action.

Jude Law remains bound and devoted to his beloved children
“I never thought I had to forge a family, but it felt the most natural thing that ever happened to me—meeting someone and becoming a father.”—JUDE LAW
avid Jude Heyworth Law may be a mouthful, but simply say “Jude Law” and it rings a bell. This 39-year old British chap is an Academy-nominated actor and a certified male fashionista, and was also named “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine in 2004. Succeeding in making receding hairlines look desirable, Jude dons androgynous pants, thanks to his skinny legs, and admits that he didn’t become famous until he took his clothes off. Recently, he appeared alongside Keira Knightly in the much-awaited Joe Wright-directed film Anna Karenina, and lent his voice to the DreamWorks animated film, Rise of the Guardians, alongside Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, High Jackman, and Isla Fisher. Sexy and talented, Jude is a cool dad to Rafferty (born 1996), Iris (born 2000), and Rudy Indiana Otis (born 2002, and is pictured here), his three children with actress, Sadie Frost. He’s also dad to Sophia, his daughter from model Samantha Burke. Some tabloids may play up too much on him being Alfie-esque in real life, but as a father, we heart Law because he seems unwavering and loving when it comes to his kids. He is photographed quite a lot with one of the four, or even all. Here, Jude snuggles up tight to add warmth to his bundled-up little boy as they walk their dogs in Primrose Hill on a chilly day. bc
