God really has his own plans for the course of our lives, and all we should do is sit back and enjoy the ride (and work hard in between).

Happy Mother’s Day! By the time this goes to print, I will be around 6 months pregnant and getting ready for the first human son in our family (I call our 12-year old Labrador, Bruce, my first boy). I’m still battling bouts with pregnancy asthma, and did not know that nausea can extend long into the second trimester, but all’s better because I am now able to walk around for longer periods of time. In fact, I have enjoyed swimming (rather, wading) when my schedule allows it. That good ol’ natural dose of Vitamin D is something you

can’t really purchase in a bottle. I also meant to point out that thanks to the kindness and generosity of family, friends, colleagues, I have been blessed with a ton of presents for the little one already. But since I am a major hoarder (which is why this magazine was borne in the first place), I am everyday on the hunt for stuff to fulfill my, er, the baby’s other necessities. I am again reading up on how it’s like to be a new mother, and at 35, I didn’t expect to be in these shoes again.

Our much-awaited Most Beautiful Moms special is finally here. To celebrate this, I hope you join us for a special photo exhibit with cocktails. We’ll post the details on our website and on facebook. com/bcmag.ph. I look forward to meeting all of you there, so please mark this event on your calendars. There is something about motherhood and beauty—the two just seem to go hand-in-hand, especially in the eyes of our own little angels. Wishing you a blessed Mother’s Day with your loved ones.

Regardless of the season, it’s always good to take extra care and keep your child’s hygiene in check. Now is the perfect time to get active and let loose outdoors, so don’t forget to keep these tips in mind for a great summer with your brood: Lather on sunscreen if you will be under the sun for longer than 15 minutes. It will not only protect you all from the scorching heat of the sun but will limit the possibility of acquiring skin cancer.

Choose the right time to go out. Remember that the sun is strongest between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Dress your child appropriately for the climate and for the activity. Make sure they wear comfortable clothes with light clothing material. Also, make sure to bring a hat or umbrella to protect your family from direct sunlight when outdoors. bcmag.ph

omen love shoes—there’s no denying it. While most of us often put on a pair of shoes for a confidence boost (and naturally, to complete our everyday outfits), it’s not such a great option for those with child. In fact, flip flops, ballet flats, and Ugg shoes are discouraged by podiatrists for pregnant moms—shocking, isn’t it? All the while we thought that the flip-flops we go home to everyday could be the safest bet for our tired feet.

According to a survey done by Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists in the U.K. in 2010, one-third of women risk foot health by wearing inappropriate footwear (such as sky high heels) during pregnancy, while two-thirds often wear flip-flops, which lack the essential support that pregnant women need. As much as 70% of these women have been found to be suffering from foot problems, including swollen ankles and feet, and pain in the arch and heel.

“As a parent, your feet have a long way to go, so make sure you take care of your podiatric health, and maintain a well-balanced lifestyle not only for yourself, but also for your kids. ”

It is imperative to find comfortable footwear that provides maximum support from your feet, which on average, may grow by half a size or more during pregnancy. The reason behind this? Hormones. These are hormones which are released to help your pelvis relax, and ligaments and joints loosen in preparation for childbirth. Another cause of the enlargement of feet during pregnancy is fluid retention. Because gravity pulls us down, the water in our body tends to move downward. This is the reason why it’s so important to prop your feet up at the end of the day (at six to 12 inches above your heart if you’re lying down), or whenever you’re seated for long periods of time.

alleviate the slowdown of blood flow back to your heart, it is recommended that you lay down on your left side during rest. If you tend to wear socks often, choose those without seams, as to not constrict blood circulation in your feet. A quick home remedy for swollen feet and ankles is cucumber. Just slice them up and place them on your ankles or feet and cover with a cloth or bandage. The cucumber cools down your swollen foot and absorbs excess fluids. You can also soak your feet in warm water with a bit of salt for about 15 minutes. Plug in your iPod and light some scented candles while you’re at it, and complete the relaxation experience.

Edema, the term referring to the swelling caused by the accumulation of fluids in your tissue, is often experienced by pregnant women in their third trimester. Your vena cava— the large vein on the right side of your body that transports blood from your lower extremities back to your heart— experiences additional pressure because of your growing baby. To help

Another common foot problem during pregnancy is over-pronation, simply known as flat foot. Over-pronation is when a person’s foot arch becomes flat due to excess weight, and the foot rolls inward when walking. This is caused by the additional stress placed on the plantar fascia, which is the ligamentlike tissue that connects the heel bone to your toes. Pregnant women are

prone to this because of the weight gain, while those who are obese and people who already have flat feet, are also at risk. While swelling may go away after giving birth, your foot growth may not, so it’s good to measure your feet throughout your pregnancy and be aware of the shoe size you must be wearing. Check out the local department store for shoe inserts that help support your feet’s arch, and consult a podiatrist if you are experiencing unusual sensations or pain. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated and help your body retain less fluid. Avoid food with high salt content, as these also cause water retention. Proper diet and exercise, especially one that is recommended by your doctor, would be the best for you and your child. As a parent, your feet have a long way to go, so make sure you take care of your podiatric health, and maintain a well-balanced lifestyle not only for yourself, but also for your kids. bc

HAPPY FEET Are your feet feeling worn out from all the weight you’re carrying? Here are some tips from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCPod) in the U.K. to keep them healthy Straps, laces, or Velcro is the way to go. Pick shoes that provide great support without compromising comfort. The best way to go, according to the SCPod, is to wear shoes with a 3-centimeter heel height, because this shifts your weight towards the middle of your foot, thus providing better comfort. Thin, sky high heels are a no-no when you’re bigger, as this places tremendous pressure on your joints, which are already subjected to much stress. If you must have some height, try wedge heels. When choosing footwear, it is essential to select those with extra

shock absorption, supportive arch, and a firm heel.

back, as this will reduce swelling and help prevent cramps.

When sitting, avoid crossing your legs or ankles. Dr. Luis Navarro, director of the Vein Treatment Center and surgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, explained that crossing your legs actually slows down the blood flow from your leg veins to your heart.

Add some leg and calf stretches to your daily exercise routine. Remember to check with your doctor for safe exercise routines for pregnant moms.

Get your blood circulating better. Even if you’re sitting down all day on your desk, or stuck on bed rest, try rotating your ankles and wiggling your toes. If you’re lying down, simulate a bike ride with your legs while flat on your

If you’re looking to buy new footwear, head to the mall later in the afternoon, as that’s when your feet are the largest. Make sure that there’s at least 1 centimeter allowance between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Veer away from pointy shoes and opt for those rounded or square shaped ones that can provide enough space and comfort for your toes.

every other parent out there, it is our dream to give our children everything that we didn’t have while growing up. But in the blink of an eye, that little bundle of joy you cradled in your arms very quickly grows into a pint-size person who knows just the right buttons to push to melt your heart. It starts out as just 10 more minutes of being carried until she drifts into sleep. Then it’s another bottle of milk with you by his side until he’s asleep for the night. Next thing you

know, your toddler is batting eyelashes at you with a sweet, “Please, please, please!” at the toy store to buy a little something. We all do it at one point or another. And then of course, grandparents step in and spoil your kids like it’s going out of style. Well-meaning godparents, relatives, even the help—everyone indulges your children, especially when they are so young, cute, and can seemingly do no wrong. bcmag.ph

raising children

U

The key here is balance. As we all know, it is extremely easy to go overboard and give our children too much. I am guilty of this myself. When my youngest was born, I felt terribly guilty for having to split my time between my two children. To make up for it, I showered my older son with treats, surprises, and toys. Who could blame me when he would respond with loving hugs and kisses? But quickly, I recognized that this was not doing him any favors. Building our bond on material goods does nothing about teaching my child about unconditional love.

IS

S

Of course, it goes without saying that you want to give your child the very best within your means. But every parent knows that you can buy your youngster the latest and greatest most expensive toy on the market, and there is a very good chance that they will be just as interested in the toy as they are in the box or bag it came in. Seriously! It is your job as a parent to prepare your child for the real world. And the reality of life is that you cannot possibly have every single thing that your heart desires. At the very moment you buy something and take it home, the next best thing has already been developed and will hit the stores before you know it. Children need to be taught on how to set goals and work hard towards achieving them. There was a time when my son thought every time we went to the store, he could pick up something to buy. In order to change this mindset, we came up with a chart that we followed with him to work towards getting his reward. On the trips to the store when he had not earned enough to get something, we told him that we were on a “looking trip” not a “buying

trip” and he was welcome to look at something we could work towards getting in the future. Little do we realize that toddlers can be very easily motivated with the proper guidance. Potty training can be rewarded with stickers rather than expensive toys. Positive reinforcement with plenty of hugs, kisses, and affection can go a very long way. Creating a bond with your child has nothing to do with how complete his toy sets are. My 3 year-old will only play with a toy for so long before realizing that sitting in my lap and playing with me is way better. We want to create emotional bonds, not a false belief that money buys happiness. Admittedly, I dread giving my children time-outs just as much as they hate being given them. Many times I have to turn my back because I know the moment I see their real (or crocodile tears), my conviction will be broken. Discipline demands consistency and so while it hurts me, I stick to my ground. And when a time-out is called—1-minute for every year of age—there is no talking, no crying, no communication in order for my young one to think about what he did

wrong and learn from his punishment. Believe me, they learn fast. Pouting, crying, tantrums, manipulation—all these heartbreaking forms of pulling at your heart strings can, and will be pulled out, by your youngster in an effort to get what they want. I often have to remind myself— who is the parent and who is the child? Tough love is one of the most difficult forms of disciplinary actions a parent will have to enforce. And then I remind myself, never allow guilt to get in your way of parenting. This, too, shall pass—and when it does, hopefully your child would have learned a lesson, and neither of you will have to endure this discomfort again. Your child does not have to love you every single minute of the day. Parents of teenagers can attest to the fact that their kids in fact do NOT love them quite a bit. Your child, however, will get over being told, “no,” and being disciplined. But if you waste your time in trying to win their love by spoiling them—your child will never get over the negative effects of growing up spoiled. bc

5 Tips to Avoid Getting Sick on a Family Vacation

Fortunately, there are a number of steps parents can take to keep their children healthy. First and foremost, teach children good hygiene. Have children wash their hands before eating or touching their faces, especially their eyes, nose, and mouth. Currently, it is advised to sneeze into the crook of your arm on your sleeve instead of your hands; it doesn’t sound appealing, but it will help lower their likelihood of transmitting germs to others. If your hands are not contaminated by a bodily fluid and water isn’t handy, then your hands can be cleaned with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which are a convenient method to get hands clean when on the go. Secondly, at the first sign of illness, children may benefit from a day of rest at home. When children aren’t feeling well, the stress of the school day can be too much. They are more tired, cranky and tend not to eat or drink. This sets them up to get further dehydrated and ill. At home, parents should encourage children to eat nourishing foods like chicken soup, drink hydrating fluids such as water and get plenty of rest. Some general rules of thumb to skip school include a fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit, a severe cough, nausea/vomiting, and wheezing. These symptoms also merit calling your family physician

28

b c PHILIPPINES { MAY 2012 }

or pediatrician and arranging for a visit to their office. Another benefit to keeping your child at home is it decreases the likelihood of your child contaminating other children and the staff at school. Many of the viruses that cause colds are airborne and children will exchange germs and get ill more frequently compared to adults. Thirdly, within the first 24 hours of symptoms, cold meds (such as ColdEEZE zinc gluconate lozenges or oral spray) has been found to reduce the duration of a cold by nearly half for adults and children over age 12. This can dramatically improve one’s recovery and decrease the likelihood of having a prolonged illness or contamination of others. The activated zinc ions are released in the mouth which then prevents the virus particles from attaching to the lining of the oral cavity and throat. This decreases the severity of the cold. Some people take Vitamin C, but studies have fallen short in proving the vitamin’s efficacy. At the end of the day, teaching your child good hygiene is the best prevention for staying healthy. Washing hands before eating or touching the eyes, nose and mouth is essential. A well-balanced diet, good hydration and rest are also important.

1. Sanitize everything! One of the first ways to ruin a vacation together is catching a cold on the plane. Carry antibacterial wipes and wipe down every surface you may touch on the plane. Wipe the belt buckle, food tray, and latch, volume control, and armrests. The airline crew cannot clean all these surfaces between flights, which can harbor contagious viruses and bacteria. 2. Wash your hands, especially before touching your own or a loved one’s eyes, nose, or mouth. When travelling, it is impossible to avoid contact with surfaces that many others may have touched. To avoid those bugs contaminating your family, cleanse your hands. 3. Be proactive. On family vacations with everyone close together, take medicine at the first sign of a cold to shorten the duration, minimizing the amount of time you are sick to better enjoy your vacation. Zinc lozenges have been found to decrease the duration of colds by nearly half in studies by Dartmouth Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic. Also, by shortening your cold, it minimizes the chances of spreading the cold onto your family members. 4. Be prepared. Carry medications with you to minimize the impact of a cold or illness so you can all still enjoy your trip. Useful medications include analgesia like Tylenol, or allergy medications for adults and children. Adults may also want to have some decongestants handy just in case. 5. Be healthy. Good hydration, good nutrition, and exercise go a long way to giving the body the support it needs to stay strong. Stay fit.

you are what you eat: ten “clean” foods to always put in your shopping cart Treat your body (and your family) right by serving nutritious and delicious food all year round g r ap h ics by M AR K C A B ALAN G

“For optimal health benefits, go for organic, grassfed beef, vegetables, and fruits.”

hen you make out your weekly shopping list, are most of the foods you go for in boxes, cans, or some other packaging? Are the foods packed full of ingredients that you can barely pronounce? If so, then you and your family might not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need to stay healthy. You may want to trade in those processed foods for whole foods and start eating clean, says Dr. Jonathan Wright. “Think of eating clean as cleaning up your life,” says Dr. Wright, coauthor along with Linda Larsen of Eating Clean For Dummies. “Just as you’d like to live in a house free of clutter, you need to remove clutter from your diet. That means throwing out the junk foods, refined sugar, additives, preservatives, trans fats, white flour, artificial flavors, and toxins that can be so prevalent in processed foods.”

“Remember, eating clean is not a diet,” says Dr. Wright. “It’s a lifestyle. It does not include a complicated regimen that restricts entire categories of food. With fewer chemicals to deal with, your body becomes better able to concentrate on keeping you healthy.” Read on to learn about the ten foods you should always include on your eating clean shopping list. These foods are great because they have many uses in the kitchen, they’re inexpensive, and they contain the most potent phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals your body needs to be at its best.

GOING GREEN Sweet potatoes are #1. The Center for Science

in the Public Interest has ranked sweet potatoes as number one in nutrition, which is no surprise considering that these spuds are loaded with fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, potassium, magnesium, zinc, carotenoids, iron, and calcium. As a matter of fact, sweet potatoes have more than twice the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin A, more than 40 percent of the RDA of vitamin C, and four times the RDA for beta-carotene. And each sweet potato contains only about 130 calories! “Looking for great meal ideas?” asks Dr. Wright. “Bake your sweet potatoes, slit them open, and stuff them with some low-fat yogurt or Greek yogurt mixed with tomatoes and celery. Or cut the sweet potatoes into slender sticks, toss them with olive oil and paprika, and bake them until crisp. There are many delicious ways to prepare sweet potatoes, but however you decide to cook them, make sure you always eat the skin! Most of the fiber is located in the skin, and the flesh right under the skin is highest in nutrients.” Get fishy with wild salmon. Wild salmon

contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, protein, and vitamin D. It’s also a great source of niacin, selenium, and vitamins B12 and B6. Eating salmon also helps prevent heart disease and diseases caused by inflammation. Scientists have recently found that omega-3 fatty acids can help slow the degenerative effects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. These fatty acids can also help lower the risk of depression and aggressive behavior. “With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that many nutritionists urge people to eat foods like wild salmon twice a week,” says Dr. Wright. “Putting salmon on the menu twice a week can lower the level of triglycerides in your blood and can improve heart function. Rebcmag.ph

member, when you’re buying salmon, be sure to choose wild salmon rather than farmed ones because the farmed fish can be high in mercury and toxic chemicals called PCBs, including lead and other heavy metals.” Olive oil is the healthy way to dress up your food. You can use olive oil

when sautéing foods, as the fat in almost any baking or cooking recipe, in salad dressings, and when frying foods. Most of the fatty acids in olive oil are omega-9 fatty acids, which are healthy monounsaturated fats that can help lower total blood cholesterol levels. Extra-virgin olive oil is made from the first pressing of olives, without heat, so it’s high in vitamin E and phenols, both of which are powerful antioxidants. And it has a wonderful flavor. Use it mostly in salad dressings and when briefly sautéing foods. “When cooking with olive oil, remember that unrefined extra-virgin olive oil has a smoke point (the point at which the oil begins to break down and emit smoke) of about 375 degrees, which is slightly above the ideal temperature for sautéing or frying food but lower than the smoke points of other oils,” explains Dr. Wright. “So use ordinary (not extravirgin) olive oil, which has a higher smoke point up to 430 degrees, for frying and long-sautéed recipes. Save the extra-virgin olive oil for salad dressings and baking!” Don’t avoid cruciferous vegetables. What

are cruciferous veggies and what makes them so great? Well, the category includes broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Kohlrabi, cabbage, kale, and bok choy. And many studies have found a link between eating these veggies and protecting the body from cancer. Specifically, phytochemicals in these foods, including sulforaphane, indole-3-carbinol, and crambene, help the enzymes in your body that destroy carcinogens before

they can damage your cells. As an added bonus, these veggies are high in antioxidants, which help prevent oxidation and damage from free radicals. “The key to getting the most out of these greens is in how you prepare them,” says Dr. Wright. “Be careful not to overcook them, because they have a high sulfur content. Doing so releases that chemical and gives them a very unappealing taste. Steam them lightly or eat them raw to keep your body (and your tongue) happy.” It’s okay to be a little nutty. Did you know that

nuts are actually seeds? Well, it’s true; any one nut contains every nutrient needed to support the sprouting and growth of an entire young tree! The many nutrients that nuts provide offer plenty of benefits to you, too: • Essential fatty acids and monounsaturated fats: Help lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol and reduce the risk of blood clots

Essentially, the ‘eating clean plan’ calls you to do the following:

Eat the foods made by nature, not man. Plan to eat five or six meals and snacks throughout the day. Avoid processed foods (in other words, anything in a box with a label). Use healthy cooking methods. Eat before you become super hungry. Stop eating when you’re satisfied, not stuffed. Don’t count your calories, fat grams, or points. Enjoy and appreciate its flavor. America’s top holistic doctor, Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD is an author, host of radio show Green Medicine, and publisher of the monthly newsletter Nutrition and Healing. Linda Larsen is a nutritionist, recipe creator, and the author of 29 books. { MAY 2012 } b c PHILIPPINES

“Because nuts have so many health benefits and are so satisfying to eat, they’re a great choice for a healthy snack on the eating clean plan,” notes Dr. Wright. “The healthiest nuts include walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, and pecans. Why aren’t peanuts on that list? Well, this may surprise you, but peanuts aren’t technically nuts! They’re legumes, just like peas and beans. Also, keep in mind that nuts lose many of their non-mineral nutrients to oxidation when they’re roasted, so eat nuts raw whenever possible.” Clean up sandwiches and salads with avocados. Avocados are a rich and

buttery treat, and—as surprising as it may be—they’re very good for you! These fruits are high in vitamins E, C, and K, potassium, oleic acid, folate, antioxidants, and phytochemicals (which stop free radical damage). The fat in avocados is monounsaturated, which means it lowers blood cholesterol levels. Plus, avocados contain beta-sitosterol, which is a phytochemical that also reduces cholesterol. “Use avocados as a sandwich spread in place of mayonnaise or butter,” recommends Dr. Wright. “Just mash up an avocado with a little lemon or lime juice and spread it on whole wheat rolls or bread. Include avocados in your green salads, eat them plain as a snack, and use them to top burgers and grilled sandwiches.” Go green and eat clean with these leafy greens. To get the most nu-

trients for the fewest calories, always put foods like kale, collard greens, romaine lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and escarole in your shopping cart. These greens are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins C, K, E, the B complex,

32

b c PHILIPPINES { MAY 2012 }

potassium, and magnesium, as well as phytonutrients, including lutein, quercetin, zeaxanthin, and beta carotene. “A diet rich in dark, leafy greens can help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease and the risk of developing cancer, and prevent diabetes and osteoporosis,” says Dr. Wright. “Eat the greens raw or cook them in soups and stews. Sturdy, leafy greens are delicious in stirfry recipes, too. In fact, you can add leafy greens to a wide variety of lunch and dinner meals.” Spice things up with curry powder. Curry powder is a

blend of several different spices, all of which are high in antioxidants and phytochemicals. But the most important spice in curry powder is turmeric, which provides a yellow color and subtle rich flavor. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a powerful phytochemical. “People who consume a lot of turmericcontaining curry powder have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, less inflammation, and improved memory,” says Dr. Wright. “Curcumin has also been shown to slow the progress of prostate cancer. There are many delicious ways to incorporate curry powder into your meals. Sprinkle it on salads, use it in salad dressings, and add it to stir-fries and even your breakfast smoothie. You can find curry powder in mild and spicy blends, or you can make your own (just be sure to include plenty of turmeric!).” Satisfy your sweet tooth with berries (especially blueberries).

Berries are a wonderful sweet treat, and they make a delicious dessert all by themselves. Plus, they’re very good for you. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and contain phytochemicals that can help fight cancer. Blueberries, especially wild blueberries, are one of the healthiest foods on earth, with the highest antioxidant content of all fresh fruit. “Dried berries have just as many nutrients as fresh,” notes Dr. Wright. “They’re higher in calories, though,

because they have less water. Still, they make a wonderful snack when eaten in moderation. And don’t forget about frozen berries! These fruits are harvested at their peak and are often processed right in the field. Frozen berries can have more nutrients than fresh berries, which may have been shipped for miles. These fruits are also high in fiber, which can help you feel full longer and can reduce blood cholesterol levels. Add berries to green salads, fruit salads, use them to top your morning cereal, and eat them out of your hand as a tasty, sweet snack.” Get to the root of clean eating with garlic and onions. These pungent root

vegetables are good sources of allyl sulfides, which are phytochemicals that can help reduce the risk of cancer and calm inflammation in the body. These veggies are also high in polyphenols and flavonoids, which prevent oxidation and stop free radical damage. Garlic can help lower cholesterol levels, too. “To get the most benefit from garlic, chop or crush it and let it sit for a few minutes at room temperature before cooking it,” says Dr. Wright. “Doing so helps preserve the allicin content, even after the garlic is cooked. Because the flavonoids in onions are concentrated near the skin, peel them as little as possible to get the most health benefits.” “Even though these foods are the cream of the crop in terms of nutrients, fiber, and good fats, don’t limit yourself to these choices,” says Dr. Wright. “Instead, use them as a jumping off point. Experiment with new foods weekly to help you stay interested in your clean eating plan and to ensure that you’re getting as many nutrients as possible in every bite you take. Don’t be afraid to try new cuisines and new combinations, too. Combine leafy greens with curry powder, coat your salmon with chopped nuts before baking, and cook broccoli or Brussels sprouts with garlic and olive oil. The possibilities are endless!” bc

Mustela Addresses Atopic Skin Problems Through Stelatopia One of the world’s most trusted names in skincare presents the best-adapted solution to use in combination with corticosteroid treatments

Because our little one’s skin is very sensitive to the slightest temperature changes and other environmental factors that cause allergies and an array of other skin problems (including Atopic Dermatitis), Mustela has come up with a solution for our baby’s delicate skin. The Stelatopia line addresses atopic dry skin, which is characterized by a shortage of lipids that alters the skin barrier. Atopic dermatitis happens when the alteration of the skin barrier is associated with an abnormal immune response. AD generally begins when the child is 3 months old, and mainly affects the face and limbs. To address this, the Stelatopia Programme was created, with a no-rinse cleansing water for the face, body, and bottom to be used during mornings and throughout the day, and a milky bath oil for the face and body to be used in the evening, during flare-ups, and a cream cleanser for the body and hair, to be used daily during evenings. The Stelatopia Programme also comes with an Emollient Cream that can be used daily during flare-ups. It re-

This one-of-a-kind element is a patented active ingredient of natural origin, and is characterized by its unique Relipidation Active lipid replenishing action, which explains both its anti-inflammatory properties and its stimulation of neosynthesis of key lipids in the epidermis. Sunflower Oil Distillate breaks the vicious cycle of atopic dermatitis by reducing xerosis, desquamation, and itching. The Sunflower Oil Distillate found in Stelatopia Emollient Cream rapidly soothes irritation and itching while lastingly restructuring even the driest skin. It also helps rebalance the cutaneous flora and limit microbial proliferation. More importantly, the Stelatopia line is specially adapted to the skin of newborns, babies, and children, so you’re assured that it contains no parabens, no colorants, no phenoxyethanol, and no fragrance—making it perfectly safe for your children.

was in high school when I first saw the movie Top Gun. The highlight of that film, of course, was the belting out of the song “You’ve lost that loving feeling...” Today, I think I realized that it may be the perfect theme song to people who are suffering from a real and deadly marriage/relationship killer.

Intimacy Anorexia.

It would seem that marriages are having a shorter shelf life nowadays, and it’s not just the celebrities that are going through it—theirs is just highly publicized. There could be a deeper and bigger issue as to why marriages and even relationships are not going the distance, and we could all be suffering from it in one way or another.

Intimacy Anorexia is a term suggested by the U.S. psychologist Douglas Weiss to describe a hurtful form of withdrawal, which he says is destroying millions of marriages—the withholding of emotional, spiritual, and sexual intimacy by one half of the couple. Rudolph Bell, in his book Holy Anorexia, notes “Appetite and sexual drive are related but distinct parts of a constellation of bodily urges that the holy anorexic seeks to tame and ultimately to obliterate.” Ultimately, anorexia is one’s desire to destroy or control a desire in order to prevent the pain of that desire going unmet or being abused.

Anorexia comes from the Greek word orexis, which means appetite. An-orexis is a denial of appetite. We have several appetites, one of which is for food. But one cannot live on bread alone, and needs other things in order to feel nurtured. We need to have our appetite for love and affection satiated as well, and most relationships suffer from the denial of affection or otherwise known as

This lack of intimacy does not just mean physical intimacy. Marriage or a relationship should be about two people being able to support, love, and provide each other with the reassurance that they need in order to grow within a relationship. If one partner (or both) withholds emotional, spiritual, physical, and even financial support, they are in danger of being (if they aren’t yet) an Intimacy Anorexic.

REAL - LATIONSHIPS

“It would seem that marriages are having a shorter shelf life nowadays, and it’s not just the celebrities that are going through it—theirs is just highly publicized.” What are the Symptoms?

There are indicators to determining whether your relationship is suffering from Intimacy Anorexia. Dr. Weiss says that if you tick five or more of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from the disorder: Being too busy with work – There’s being focused with work, and there’s using work as an excuse not to be intimate. With the onset of technology, it would seem that you can stay connected with friends and co-workers via mobile phones, social media, and the internet, but if you’re spending more time updating your status message and tweets than you are talking to your partner, then something is clearly amiss. Blaming – The intimacy anorexic tends to throw the responsibility of being an intimacy anorexic to another person or another cause except for themselves. It’s always someone else’s fault and not theirs. It’s easier to detach from a relationship by keeping a pristine facade and let the other person take the blame. The intimacy anorexic will point the blame to everyone else but themselves. Withholding Praise – The lack of compliments or praise within a relationship is an obvious indicator. If you or your partner is generous with praise for someone else except your respective partners, this may be an indicator of Intimacy Anorexia. Compliments and praise are important in a relationship. A simple “Thank you” or “That was a lovely meal” can mean so much. Withholding Emotions – There’s nothing more debilitating than the feeling that you cannot bcmag.ph

share your innermost feelings with someone you’re supposed to trust. Criticizing – An emotional anorexic will indulge in constant low-blows or putdowns of his or her partner and constantly points out their weaknesses. They are much faster in making a list of what’s wrong with their partners rather than what is beautiful or amazing about them. Distance – The ever so common “silent treatment” has never been so dangerous. Couples who can go on days (some even weeks) without speaking to each other are at the edge of relationship meltdown. Financial Control – Intimacy anorexics often keep or hide their finances from their spouses or they keep them short of money— they control their partners with it. They believe that compensating with money is enough and that they don’t need to be intimate anymore. Why is this happening?

According to Dr. Weiss, Intimacy Anorexia comes from different causes. Intimacy Anorexics may have had a difficult time relating to the parent of the opposite gender when they were children. They may have also been children of Intimacy Anorexics and may have adapted to the attitudes because it was what they saw growing up and have believed to be the norm. Dr. Weiss also states that a traumatic sexual experience in their younger years may also push a person to be an Intimacy Anorexic. Although some of the symptoms can be seen manifesting after the honeymoon period is over or during the course and run of a relationship, it will wear off when things get less

stressful and they adjust to each other. Intimacy Anorexics on the other hand, have behavioral patterns that are much more deliberate and intentional. One must remember though that sexuality is just one factor within Intimacy Anorexia. There is the underlying issue of emotional intimacy dysfunction. Ultimately, anorexia is one’s desire to destroy or control a desire in order to prevent the pain of that desire going unmet or being abused, in this case, it is intimacy that is being controlled—with an on and off switch. What can be done?

Truth of the matter is, this is a very complex topic. There are a number of things to look at and consider before one engages in trying to find a cure or a solution. Just like with any disorder or disease, you can’t just look at the symptoms and make a diagnosis there. One must find the root cause of the dysfunction and tackle that. Intimacy Anorexia affects not just the two people involved in the relationship. If you have children, they will get affected by it and may inadvertently take on the same attitude and continue with the cycle with their own partners when they grow up. Try this exercise—give each other at least two compliments every day and talk to each other (a real conversation, please) for at least two minutes each day without any distractions—just the two of you. It’s a tiny step but it could do wonders. Finally, seek help from a professional. A licensed therapist or relationship counselor can assist and guide you into finding intimacy within your relationship again. bc

e never imagine ourselves as the victims, but sometimes, the things we think could never happen to us find a way of happening. Too many of us replay in our minds the events that led to those circumstances, but life coach Teri Johnson believes that reviewing the past isn’t the answer. What we do next is what matters the most. “All the things you never thought you’d experience, but did, leave behind lingering after effects that can stop us in our tracks,” said Johnson, author of Overcom-

mindsets ing the Nevers. “Shame, guilt, anger, and resentment start to sink in. We start to believe lies about ourselves, such as ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I’m undeserving.’ We escape our pain and these toxic feelings by retreating into unhealthy behaviors and addictions. But there is freedom from the struggle. There is hope in discovering the truth. There is a way to fall in love with who we are to experience a joy-filled life.” Johnson shares a solution to overcome those feelings in a series of 12 simple steps that she feels can be practically applied to our lives—If we are ready to do the work. Here are five of these steps…

– Freedom starts with willingness. You have to want this for yourself. There is no one who can decide for you, or do the work on your behalf. Willingness is readiness.

Willingness

“All the things you never thought you’d experience, but did, leave behind lingering after effects that can stop us in our tracks.”

– Do you have the strength to make the changes necessary to turn a situation around through an attitude of acceptance? Or will you remain powerless, remain in the state of non-acceptance and let everything around you dictate how you feel? I can’t change somebody else. Period.

Acceptance

Surrender – All of us are surrendered to something. What we surrender ourselves to ultimately becomes our god, what we worship, turn to, or rely upon. The question is, what are we surrendered to? Is it something firm, solid, and long-lasting, or something that can slip away, burn to ashes, or be swallowed?

– We cannot overcome an issue we do not know exists, we need to search. We cannot become who we were created to be, without embracing our strengths and uncovering our God-given gifts and talents. So we need to look through our lives carefully to find the answers. How do we do this? Without fear, with courage, boldness, and bravery.

Courage

– We have a responsibility for ourselves in all areas of our lives in all of our roles. No one can attempt to change us or to control us, unless we give them the power. We need to be the change. Admitting opens this door. Will you walk through it?

Responsibility

“Many people just want a quick fix and aren’t willing to put in the work required,” she added. “I believe that, in this economy, everyone is experiencing ‘nevers’ they didn’t believe they’d ever encounter. Some are affected by the loss of job, foreclosure, or even bankruptcy. People who hold down two or more jobs may find their health dibcmag.ph

minishing, or even joining the ranks of the millions who suffer from obesity. Divorce, drugs, addictions, workplace issues—they can all creep up on us if we aren’t diligent. The key thing is to understand how to handle those ‘nevers’ when they occur, and not be daunted. It’s never easy, but always worth it.” bc

KEEPING SA F E

“According to the CPSC, the most common tip-over scenarios involve toddlers who have climbed onto, fallen against, or pulled themselves up on furniture. About 70% of children’s fatalities involved falling televisions, and 27% involved only furniture falling.”

Julie Vallese, Consumer Safety Expert for Safety 1st has some simple and easy tips for your readers to safeguard beyond locking cabinets, and using outlet covers. There are many hidden hazards in the home parents often overlook or don’t think about. Here are important safeguarding tips for parents:

A recent study shows that over 5,000 children annually are treated in emergency rooms for falls from windows (Consumer Product Safety Commission). Make sure you have a window lock to help prevent falls. Beware of toy stacking. Children will pile up anything to get a view outside the window. Additionally, most screens cannot hold up to the weight of a small child, nor are they meant to. The study showed that in 83% of the reported falls, window screens were on the window that was fallen through. Anchor all heavy furniture or appliances that could topple onto child as a result of climbing or pulling. According to the CPSC the most common tip-over scenarios involve toddlers who have climbed onto, fallen against, or pulled themselves up on furniture. About 70 percent of children’s fatalities involved falling televisions, and 27 percent involved only furniture falling. Use a flat screen TV lock to help prevent falling TVs and furniture wall straps to attached large furniture to the wall. Anything that will fit inside an empty cardboard toilet paper roll is a choking hazard. Remove dish towels from an oven door or bcmag.ph

refrigerator; a child could pull on the towel and hit his or her head when they open. Utilize an Oven Lock to prevent the door from opening, and clear view stove knob covers to keep kids from accidentally turning on the stove. Babies can fall into a toilet, or front-load washing machine head first and not be able to get out. The toilet is also a water source and a place where kids love to throw toys. Try to keep those rooms off limits, or install a front load washer-dryer lock, or the ProGrade™ PushButton Toilet Lock to keep children safe. Ensure all cabinets and drawers are locked and off limits. Young kids love opening and closing cabinet doors and drawers, where they can access sharp utensils, small appliances and cleaning supplies.Have a safe zone for kids to explore, such as leaving the Tupperware drawer unlocked. Of course, it’s also imperative to keep your family members and house help informed about all your installations in and around the house. id you know that our children’s emotional intelligence is dependent upon what we, as parents, model for them? Emotional intelligence (EQ) is our ability to understand and manage our own emotions as well as understanding and managing the emotions of others. In recognition of June being Children’s Awareness Month, renowned emotional intelligence expert and award-winning author, Dr. Jean Greaves provides four emotional intelligence strategies to help your readers develop and practice their own EQ skills when communicating with children so that they, in turn, can grow up practicing emotional intelligence to manage anger and other difficult feelings, use non-violent behavior to resolve conflict, show respect for others, and ultimately become less emotionally scarred.

F OSTERING CONNECTIONS EQ SKILL: SELF-AWARENESS QUIT TREATING YOUR FEELINGS AS GOOD OR BAD

It’s human nature to want to create two simple and easy piles of emotions: the good ones and the bad ones. For instance, most of us would automatically classify frustration as bad. You don’t want yourself nor your children to feel frustrated—you might even beat yourself up for feeling frustrated—and may do whatever you can to get rid of it. Likewise, we tend to let good emotions like excitement run wild. The downfall of attaching such labels to your and your child’s emotions is that judging your emotions keeps you from really understanding what it is that you or your child is feeling. Emotions are there to inform you. Suspending judgment of emotions allows them to run their course and vanish. So, the next time you feel an emotion begins to build up, refrain from putting it into the good or bad pile and remind yourself that the feeling is there to help you understand something important. Practice this skill with your child and they will learn to better handle extreme emotions as they come into play. EQ SKILL: SOCIAL AWARENESS STEP INTO THEIR SHOES

For most of us parents, we remember the times when our young children would place their small feet into our overly sized shoes or boots, and try their best to walk around! Now imagine trying to shove your overly sized feet into their tiny shoes or slippers. It certainly puts things into perspective at how differently we may handle or react in a certain situation compared to that of our children. Walking in the shoes of another is social awareness at its best. It’s for all of us who want to gain perspective and a deeper understanding of others, improve our communication, and identify problems before they escalate. To practice this skill, you need to ask yourself questions that start with, “If I were this person…” This is a wonderful skill to instill in our children as soon as possible. Having the ability to see challenging situations from another’s perspective is a skill that will hold value throughout a lifetime. bcmag.ph

EQ SKILL: SELF-MANAGEMENT SMILE AND LAUGH MORE

Did you know that when you laugh and smile, your face sends signals to your brain that you are happy? Your brain literally responds to the nerves and muscles in your face to determine your emotional state. Smiling a genuine smile is contagious. So is laughing. The next time you find yourself stuck in a frustrating moment with your child, forcing yourself to smile counteracts your own negative emotional state. It will also bring comfort and ease to your child. A crying child who sees their parent break out into a large smile, or burst into laughter, gives them a moment to pause the upset and focus on a positive moment. Smiling and laughter won’t eliminate feeling down, and they shouldn’t—every mood has its purpose—but it’s nice to know you have an outlet when you need to put on a happy face.

“Did you know that when you laugh and smile, your face sends signals to your brain that you are happy? Your brain literally responds to the nerves and muscles in your face to determine your emotional state.”

EQ SKILL: RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT TAKE FEEDBACK WELL

Feedback is a unique gift. It’s meant to help us improve in ways that we perhaps cannot see on our own. We, as parents, need to practice giving good feedback to our children, but we also need to allow our children the opportunity to give us feedback! To receive it well, first, consider the source of your feedback. As you receive it, listen and really hear what’s being said. Ask clarifying questions and ask for examples to better understand the person’s perspective. Whether you agree with what has been said or not, thank the person for his or her willingness to share, because it takes almost as much grace to give feedback as it does to receive it. After you receive the feedback, don’t feel pressured to rush into action. Time can help you absorb the underlying point, sort out your feelings and thoughts, and help you to decide what to do with it. If we practice this skill in front of our children, as well as allow them the opportunity to provide us with feedback and take theirs graciously, they will learn to better manage how they give and receive opinion. bc

On married life with actor, John Estrada:

He loves bullying me, he loves just to get me mad. While my mom was here, he would tell me something, “Oh this lipstick of yours is too pink. You look like a clown.” Then I get so mad, my mom would look at him, and he’s laughing because he knows I’m mad—so he’s enjoying it. And I turn to him and said, “You know, you are the clown. This is a fashion color.” You know, it’s just those kulit things every day—but at the same time, he could be very sweet and he cares for me and everything, and he’s sometimes way too protective. He acts like a child minsan, so parang if I don’t pay too much attention to him, sometimes feeling ko he’s competing with my baby. But overall, it’s really fun. I guess that’s how life is supposed to be—it’s never boring.

On the origins of her interesting name:

‘Yciar’ is a Basque name. It actually refers to a town in the Basque regions of Spain called ‘Itziar,’ where there is supposedly a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary. Itziar literally means, ‘old stone’ or ‘ancient boulder.’ On her embarrassing moments as a mom:

I have an aunt who had her brows tattooed. One Sunday when we had all gotten together for lunch, I found my son, who was only 4 years old at the time, continuously staring at her. Finally, the gathering ended and as we approached to say our goodbyes, he innocently asks her, “Why are your eyebrows blue?”

Yciar Castillo Model, TV host, Radio Scriptwriter, Theater Actress, Makeup Artist

On having kids 9 years apart:

I did research, and a lot of new studies had come up, and a lot of new discoveries in nine years, so I was completely lost, even having to choose the type of pump or the type of bottle. It was like being pregnant for the first time again. My son is calm and very laid back, while my daughter is feisty and has the makings of a go-getter. The moment she opens her eyes, she looks for him and vice versa. And every time he walks in the door, she automatically smiles. It’s so much fun to watch them.

Priscilla Meirelles-Estrada Beauty Queen, Model, Host, Actress

On being a new mom:

The least I think about now is myself, it’s all about my baby, and then I understand what is motherhood all about. You completely forget about yourself, and it seems like you don’t have needs and wants, and anything like that. It’s all about the people that you love, and the people that you want to prioritize within that time, and it’s always the baby. It’s basically, I don’t exist. That’s how I feel. I don’t feel hunger, I don’t feel anything. It’s all about, is my baby, okay? Is she hungry? Sleepy? Is she feeling something? What is going on? Is she happy? She’s smiling. Kahit ano sa akin, okay lang. If I don’t eat the whole day, it’s fine. I just look at the positive—okay, I’m just losing weight. (Laughs) bcmag.ph

Michelle Teves Model, Cake Entrepreneur

On being a cake entrepreneur and her inspiration for designs:

I’ve been baking since I was a kid, but it was only until I made my daughter’s 1st birthday cake that people really started noticing my work. I would make cakes and cupcakes for my friends’ kids and post pictures on my blog (ilovecococakes.com) and so far, the orders haven’t stopped. I get inspiration from different places, pictures, videos, experiences, but it is really my kids who inspire me—they’re my biggest fans. It can be from one of their storybooks or from their suggestions on what they would want to see on their cakes. Sometimes clients have a particular theme to work with but most of the time I have a freehand with the design. Inspiration is everywhere when we learn how to be grateful and see the beauty of everyday things. The most challenging cake that I made was the Asparagus cake. My friend ordered it for her mother who loves gardening, and particularly likes the asparagus. I thought this cake was going to be easy to make because all I really needed to do was

make asparagus spears using gum paste. But when I assembled it the night before the deadline, only a quarter of the cake was covered. I had to stay up all night and work through the morning making thrice as many spears. Good thing I made it on time, complete with eyebags and all. How she manages being a single parent to three children:

Being a single parent definitely has its challenges, but it has also been an incredibly rewarding experience. I really love being a mom to my beautiful kids, and everyday I make a choice to prioritize them. Because of everything I have to juggle, I have found that it is really important to learn how to prioritize, and make decisions based on those priorities, which are my children. It’s all about knowing who and what to value—and my kids are the most valuable to me, after God.

Model, Logistician and Licensed Customs Broker

On parenting advice:

I actually get a lot of unsolicited advice, especially when I was still pregnant. But then, like my parents would always tell me, when you’re a new mom, you’re very idealistic and I read a lot of books and got a lot of advice from people. At the end of the day, the best thing to do, I guess, is to be very involved with whatever your child is going through, or whatever his activity is. The funniest things son Juamee does:

He has a lot of antics. What I find really funny would be like, he’s very, very fashionable at 6. He would choose his own clothes—he prefers wearing suits, he loves wearing leather shoes, and then he gels his hair in a certain way. One time, he didn’t go to school because he couldn’t do it the right way, but I was already at work. I now find it funny, but that day, it was so stressful because I didn’t want him to miss classes. Best thing about being a mom:

You’re appreciated every single day, every couple of minutes. That somebody loves you unconditionally and somebody thinks of you as the best. We mold them in a certain way—differently for each parent—but for them, we’re just the best and we’re their everything. And as my son would always say, I’m the prettiest.

Fun because we, at such a young age, would go to a lot of places, get to meet people, and be recognized by people right away—and because they were nice to us. (Laughs) Sometimes they would give us special treatment, at the same time, sometimes they tend to judge you, or have high expectations of you. On what makes motherhood beautiful:

They say that motherhood is indeed challenging, and sometimes it takes a lot of your time, patience, even your life. But I think what makes it beautiful at the end of the day is when you see those kids growing up happy and then they’re normal, beautiful children, I think that’s the most rewarding. And then when you see them that what you taught them, they can already apply it in their lives and they’re learning, ang sarap lang ng feeling because you know that God assigned you these children, God gave you these lives to take care of, and you were part of raising those beautiful kids.

Getting into modeling and designing:

My first commercial was when I was 7, along with my brother for Tang juice. I suppose my agent at that time waited for me to grow old enough to try out for beauty products, and I got the lead role in products such as Colgate, Palmolive, Clean & Clear, etc. As for baptismal design, my parents have been in the business of children’s clothing ever since, so I have always been immersed in the ins and outs of this enterprise. It’s just what I always knew how to do! On motherhood changing her outlook in life:

As cliché as it sounds, being a mother opened up a part of me I never thought I had. Being the youngest in my family, I was always used to being taken care of. Now that I’m a mom, it catapulted me in to being the caretaker of a life who is so dependent on me. The

returns of all this adjustment is indescribable. On being the niece of politician, Manoling Morato:

The way my uncle relates to the public and how he is viewed by the public will always be different from the way we relate to each other because, of course, we are family. We’re not always discussing politics. We chat about mundane things, we joke around, we eat...a lot! On the kind of mom she is:

I didn’t want to claim to be a certain kind of mom, so I ended up asking my husband to answer this question. He calls me a “funloving disciplinarian, and an adventurous mom who loves to try new things, and thinks of new ideas, places and experiences for the family to try.” MAY 2012 philippines

Tanya Garcia-Lapid Actress, Businesswoman

Best and most challenging part of being a wife to a politician:

It’s more of challenging for me, because I’m a very outspoken person. I say what I feel and I do what I wanna do, but now that my husband’s a politician, I’m more careful with what I say and do, since people from the other party might take it against us, and it might ruin him. I also have two innocent children to think of, and they shouldn’t get involved. Funniest or most embarrassing moment as a mom:

I think I’m a stage mom. When Mischa has plays in school, I always attend rehearsals. Last year, during her school play, I noticed that she was at the back, so I couldn’t really see her because the kids in front were a bit taller. I told her, “Mischa, on the day of the play itself, I want you to go in front so that people can see you.” And then on the day itself, she went to the front and shouted, “Mommy, I’m in front!” The teacher and other

parents might hear na binubuko niya ‘ko. I wanted to run out of the auditorium and hide. (Laughs) On her flawless skin:

I don’t put anything on my face. Maybe I’m just really lucky that I don’t get blemishes or pimples. All I do is I wash my face about ten times a day! On a regular day, you’ll never see me wearing makeup. My kids and I use Johnson’s Baby Milk Bath for bathing. On what makes motherhood beautiful:

I became very selfless—everything that I do now is for my children. You learn a lot about yourself that you’re capable of doing this, being this patient, this understanding. When you have kids, your love for them you can’t explain, you love them unconditionally—loving without getting anything in return.

On being wife to tennis champion Felix Barrientos:

Felix is my best teammate—he makes me better in any sport we take up, and we do these activities competitively but just the two of us. He is also my best coach—we strategize our weekends so we can maximize our time with the boys...seriously! He is my eyes to the world—he has competed globally and he shares his experiences with us. It’s like having a running commentary to CNN sports and we appreciate the tournaments more when dad is around. On being one of the top lawyers (and founding partner at PJS Law) in the country, and being a mom:

I’ve realized that balance does not mean an equal 50-50 split between family and my professional life. Equilibrium means the ability of my work to understand and adjust when I have to be a 100% mom and the other way around. I believe that family is not at the expense of profession. How to remain responsive to both is the real challenge, but is achievable. But I will be the first to admit as well, motherhood will always be a work in progress, and so is being a lawyer. I just don’t like the intrigues that go with his job, but I’m getting used to it. His schedule is very busy, but I appreciate his effort to make time for the family. On her son, Benito’s, first football “encounter”:

they found it terrible. I’m sure they were judging me, but it was so funny. (Laughs) On how motherhood has changed her perspective in life:

Now that I’m a mother, I feel like I have everything. It simplified my life, in a good way. As long as I’m with my kids, it doesn’t matter what’s going on. My husband and I don’t go out anymore, and I used to go out a lot. Now, as long as I’m with my family, I’m okay. It doesn’t matter even if there’s a revolution and I wouldn’t even know it—you know what I mean. When I’m with my kids, my cell phone’s not with me, because I don’t care—everybody important in your life is already around you, so other things can wait.

I thought my eldest was ready for football, but apparently when they’re boys, it’s better if they’re the older one in a class because they have to feel confident. Anyway, I took him to a like a soccer clinic and while I was registering him, they made him sit on a ball. He was around 2 and 1/2, and he was the youngest in that class. After I registered him, I looked back and saw him running towards us—meaning me and the yaya—and he kept crying. So I sat down and reached out my arm like, “Oh Benito, it’s okay,” and then he made a bee line and ran to his yaya. Oh my gosh! I didn’t know whether to kill him (Laughs). That you’re married to a person who is inspired, and who knows that he’s blessed with a lot of talent, and at the same time, he knows the meaning of hard work. That’s one amazing part of being married to a basketball player— and a champion at that. You’re married to a person who, in turn, keeps you motivated and also knows how to help you win in your own struggles. On motherhood’s treasured moments:

I’m a breastfeeding advocate, so I think one of the most beautiful and one of the most precious moments and privileges that I’ve had as a mother was that I was able to nurse my children. My two boys were exclusively breastfed and the best part about that is I was able to provide them a healthier life, and basically when I talk about life, it’s until their adulthood. Being the only lady in the Hizon household:

I think being there to serve your husband and help him is definitely a wonderful responsibility and feeling. But being the only girl, I also am the subject of their utmost affection and they spoil me to death with hugs and kisses, which is always wonderful— they’re very sweet to me. On what makes motherhood beautiful:

I feel extremely blessed to be a mother. It is such a privilege to be able to witness the daily unfolding of the beauty of every child. It is being a part of the miracle of growth and development of a beautiful human being, the countless sacrifices and continuous hard work with all the glory, and being able to contribute to making our world a nicer place to live in by raising children of character. Mommy essentials:

First of all, my mommy calendar. I use it to organize the kids’ schedules, their play dates, birthday parties, and extra curriculars. It’s something that I always have to look at, maybe five to ten times in a day. What’s important to me also is the quiet time that I have before they get home from school, because that’s when I actually start to recharge myself before they get home. And of course because not only am I their mommy, I’m also their driver, tutor, butler, playmate, once in a while I do indulge in massages. I have two boys, so we play, run around, and make a lot of noise. And lastly, one of my essentials is also my iTunes, my collection of music. My sons love music—one plays the piano, the other plays the guitar. Once in a while, we have disco nights and we also do jamming. We sing, dance, put my iTunes on shuffle and just have fun. On her personal style and fashion must-haves:

Nothing too calculated and timeconsuming, usually unpredictable but always comfortable. A flattering silhouette is key, and being able to pull it all off is more important to me than possessing the top 10 season’s must-haves. My fashion must-haves are, a wide and tasteful collection of lingerie, swimwear and sunglasses, Diesel jeans, Adidas by Stella McCartney, and whatever’s in my mother’s closet. bcmag.ph

I also wanted to add that I love Johnson’s Milk Bath for helping keep my skin smooth. On having a baby unexpectedly:

Tackling the baby out of wedlock was a big issue for me, not for my family. They were excited that I was having a baby. Even my lola was saying, “It’s okay, Denise. It’s a blessing.” Yes, I know, it’s just, I had a plan, a time frame. But then, again, being humbled by God saying that it’s not about your plan; it’s what I want for you.

Mylene Dizon Actress, Model

Her pregnancies, and being a single mom:

I was mad, I was angry, because I felt like I was had—like naisahan ako. It wasn’t unplanned entirely. I did say to myself that hopefully, by the time I’m 30, I would be pregnant. It was a mental deadline. But when it happened, sandali lang! Like, thus ended my happy days as a single person... (Laughs) I felt cheated. With Lucas, again, I wasn’t prepared for it—and more so because Paolo [Paraiso] and I weren’t on perfect terms when I got pregnant with Lucas. It wasn’t ideal. It was not something that women should follow. Nevertheless, I did again make that mental note—and I should be careful with my mental notes from now on, because they seem to materialize—that I wanted another child. If I didn’t get pregnant with Lucas at that time, I was thinking of adopting. One reason is that there are so many kids out there who need a home, and my home was a happy home. I knew I could raise more than one child, and at that time, if I didn’t have a boyfriend or if I didn’t get pregnant, I would have been happy to share my home with an orphan. Her relationship with her two boys, Tomas and Lucas:

When I dress up for, let’s say, I’m gonna go out with my friends, I ask for their opinion. Magsusuot ako ng mga dalawa, papipiliin ko sila. Pati sa sapatos. I’m just tripping. It’s nice to know their opinion. For example, if it’s too revealing, “Why can I see your boobs?” I said, “Because it’s sexy!” [They’d say,] “I think I like the other one better.” Or if I’m putting on moisturizer and we’re about to leave. Tomas said, “Let’s go, Mom.” Sabi ko, “Wait. Nagpapaganda pa ang mommy mo.” He’ll say, “Tsk. Pretty ka na.” (Laughs)

Parenting styles she emulates:

I’ve always looked up to my parents. My father has managed to make the time to be with each of us despite his busy schedule. He has never failed to keep his lines of communication open. My mother has always put us above everything else in what she did. And while she too would have other commitments to fulfill, she would block off those days where she’s needed to be with us. Both my mother and father brought out the best in each of us. These summer days:

My children are still in school, but I am planning to take them both to London and Paris this year because they have heard so much about what I do as a blogger, but they have never seen those cities yet. This is what I work hard for––to be able to give them that opportunity to see the world and understand different cultures

better—in reality, not just in theory. Maintaining her skin’s softness and smoothness:

Definitely with the help of Johnson’s Milk Bath. Taking baths is one of the luxuries I don’t deny myself of, and this is also my quiet time. Proudest mommy moment:

Seeing my children happy and proud of their own achievements, in school and extracurricular activities. I’ve always told them that they should never do good in school for us, that they should do good in school for themselves because the feeling of achieving something for oneself is far better than the feeling of pleasing someone else. I am proudest as a mother when I see them act with a proper conscience. It’s not just the achievements in school that make me proud of them, but of them and their character as individuals.

The most challenging part about being a mother, wife, and President of GMA Films:

Time management. I always make it a point to spend as much quality time I can with my family. I want my kids to feel that they are top priority. Her mommy must-haves:

Now that my kids are already 8 and 12 years old, my new mommy must-haves would be cooking skills (so that I can whip up their food requests whenever they feel like having a treat) and also a comfy pair of rubber shoes so that I can play sports with them. Living with her parents and siblings, and their families:

It’s a lot of fun, actually! My kids are growing up with their cousins like they are siblings. They are also very close to their grandparents and aunts and uncles. And I don’t have to worry about my kids being left alone since there is always an adult or two at home to look after them.

The best and most challenging part of being a wife to public servant Miguel Zubiri:

kind of devotion to public service.

The best thing about being married to a public servant are the countless opportunities you have to help and serve our nation. You really get exposed to the harsh realities that face our country, and I am thankful for the chance to get involved and do something about it. I think the biggest challenge is having to share your husband and life with his work. However, when you look at this in the right context, which is the fact that with all the problems of our country, you can’t just help half heartedly—your response has to be massive and you have to give yourself completely—then you find yourself expecting nothing less from your husband than this

The benefits of having children early:

I love that I started having my kids at a time in my life when I still have enough energy to keep up with them. We have so much fun getting silly and crazy together. My mom had me pretty early too so now that I’m married and a mom as well, she’s still actively in my life, able to give me advice. I think knowing that you’ll be around to see your kids go through many of the stages of their lives is the biggest benefit of having your kids early.

Motherhood is not an easy task/job/mission/calling. You are now responsible for this creature and the herculean task of making this small version of yourself a responsible and productive member of society. A regular mom has enough to deal with, so imagine what a pre-med celebrity mom goes through? Although Jodi Sta. Maria takes on this mission with passion, there are still moments where parenthood tests her. But as blacksmiths would say: “The best and sharpest swords have been forged with the hottest fires and the strongest of all blows.

Early Days in Entertainment

Jodi Sta. Maria started in show business when she was just a teenager. She met a talent scout who asked if they were interested in her joining the Star Circle search. She got it and the rest is history. She recounts her first taping experience with unbridled enthusiasm— pretty much how a child would regale her story of her first trip to the carnival. “My very first TV appearance was with the Jolina Magdangal Special, where I played Jolina’s sister. Let’s just say that

I waited a long time for my scene and when it happened and it was over, I told all my friends to watch it. The next day, after the show, I asked them if they saw me, and they all said they weren’t able to. I had to explain the entire scene and it turned out that I was barely even seen.” She laughs uninhibitedly, thoroughly enjoying the memory and its hilarity. Definitely a far cry from where she is now—a top product endorser, a well

lauded actress for both commercial and independent films, and one of the country’s most well-known beautiful faces. Yet, Jodi has maintained to be such a down-to-earth person. She walked into the interview with no makeup and a simple jeans-and-shirt ensemble, and yet she managed to capture the entire room’s attention.

people—especially those who don’t have the means and ways to get any kind of specialized medical assistance.” Beckoning the Call of Motherhood

Truth be told, motherhood was in the plan, but it was not within hers anytime soon. Jodi found herself pregnant sometime between late April to early May, just a couple of months from when she got married. “It was a surprise. I was within that transition from being single to being a wife when I found out I was pregnant. Suddenly, I bcmag.ph

uterus’ opening, covering it partially or fully.

The news of the pregnancy was taken with such positivity. However, it wasn’t an easy pregnancy. “There were a lot of complications. I was spotting on my third month and had premature contractions on my fifth month. I was under complete bed rest without any bathroom privileges. The next month, they found out that I had placenta previa!” Placenta previa is a condition that causes the placenta to lie low at the

It was a very trying time for Jodi and her family, but like the trooper that she is, she went through all the tribulations with grace and a bit of humor. She regales how they gave her a drip feed for her pain, but because of the whole excitement, she completely forgot about it. “Nobody can truly prepare you for the pain of childbirth. lar to the cramps you get with your period. Let me tell you right now, that’s the biggest myth. It was not like menstrual cramps at all! The funniest part is that people keep on telling you to relax!” Jodi also breaks the myth of euphoric bliss you experience when you’re presented with your child. “My assumption and perception was there would be this overwhelming torrent of emotions when you see your baby for the first time. In my case it was more of, ‘Ay! May bata!’ It was more of the awe that this living being came from me! ‘So, it was you in my womb for nine months?’—that sort of thing.” Hands-On Mother

Staying in the US even after giving birth was a treasure trove of epiphanies for Jodi. There, she wasn’t Jodi the actress. She was just plain Jodi—mom and housewife. “It’s funny how you’re always a mom first and foremost before you’re anything else, isn’t it?” she pondered. In the US, she would be just like any other mom: washing dishes, doing the laundry and housework while taking care of a baby. She pored over books like a thirsty man in an oasis. Being a hands-on mom also gave Jodi the first-hand experience to every milestone that Thirdy had. “I saw him take his first steps! It is an inexplicable feeling to be there at the exact moment it happens.” She also recounts how she’s discovered the solution to calming Thirdy down. “I

tried everything! I knew he wasn’t hungry, or needed a change or a burping either because I’ve gone through each step already. But then, he calmed down when he heard the washing machine and dryer! Then followed the water flowing through the tap and the vacuum cleaner! It was great in a way because I was able to multitask by making him calm and asleep while I did the laundry or the dishes or the vacuuming of the house. It was the white noise produced by these items that calmed him down.” At this point, Thirdy comes in and asks his mom if he can buy some of the shoes to be used for the shoot. Jodi tells him that they would have to discuss it first. While the young man busies himself with the selection of shoes, Jodi asks the staff if it were possible to purchase the shoes and requests that she buys it later. “He likes shoes.” She smiles. It almost seems that Thirdy is older than his six years of existence. I pointed it out that he seems to be able to express himself clearly and confidently—in English or Tagalog. “He is quite advanced for his age. I know most parents say this about their kids, but I checked books and consulted with paediatricians about his development. He started crawling at about four months, and I found out about this when I left him in the room so that I can wash the dishes. I didn’t think any 4month old baby would be able to crawl himself off a bed, but he did! All I heard was this crash and I ran into the room to find him off the bed, on the floor, and

crawling rather clumsily, but he was doing it. Then he took his first steps at 10 months! But I wouldn’t worry about it if your baby is already a year old and is just about to walk with assistance. That shouldn’t make you panic as a parent. It’s just that every child would have their own developmental milestones.” Being a hands-on celebrity mom would most definitely bring on some challenges. Jodi isn’t an exception. “Wala naman. I guess it’s not really so much a challenge than it is a learning experience. I learn from every experience that I have had and that makes me more equipped and prepared should the same situation happen again, or if I’m faced with a different situation, the lessons I’ve had previously will guide my actions and decisions. I try to balance everything as much as I can, but we know for a fact that motherhood is a juggling act—especially now that I’m a single mom. The challenges that I have are pretty much the same challenges every mom goes through—school, discipline...” Disciplining is a subject that Jodi has obviously done exhaustive research on. “Each child responds differently to the type of discipline you give them. Some kids respond more positively to verbal reminders while others need a bit more time on the naughty corner. I’m not for capital punishment but I’m not averse to giving him a spank either. If need be, a strong smack on the hand would work. It has to sting so that he can associate that

the action he has done to merit the spank is something that is not taken positively and therefore, he won’t do it again.” Jodi on Thirdy

Parents usually have a tendency to dream for their child and hope that their child becomes a surgeon, a pilot, a genetic scientist, or the president. Thirdy’s heritage would make it easy to assume that he would be a politician or a doctor or a celebrity. This doesn’t seem to faze Jodi. “I would never dream or force Thirdy to be something that he wouldn’t want to be. It is not my place to dictate upon my child what I or the world for that matter, think that he should be. My job as his mother is to support him and guide him. It is his job to discover himself and his capabilities and do what he wants to do.” She is adamant in ensuring that Thirdy would have all the support he needs from her. “What if he wants to be in showbiz?” I asked. This seemed to put her in a pickle. “Well, I have one condition. He needs to finish school first. I want him to value education. I know there are some parents out there that may have a different opinion from mine, but I just honestly want him to have a solid education first. Our work is not a bed of roses as most people misconceive it to be. I just want him to be well equipped with the skills and merits from the academe.” There is a lot of experience that can back that statement up. Going into show business at a very young age, Jodi had to stop her formal education to focus on working as one of the most popular and sought after actresses in the early 2000’s. It was only last year that Jodi graduated from high school from a school in the South, and right after enrolled in college to pursue her dreams of becoming a physician. Jodi recalls a time when she totally lost all poise when she thought Thirdy was drowning. “There was a time when we were in a beach resort and I was all dressed up. He was in the pool and he sort of lost his breath trying to get from one end of the pool to another. I saw him from the corner of my eye and just instinctively ran and jumped in the water! He was okay but I couldn’t say the same about my outfit and how I looked after I got out the pool. The funny thing is that Thirdy is a rather good swimmer. I guess he just wasn’t able to hold on to his breath and he overestimated the expanse of the pool. So, nasira ang buong outfit ko at nabura ang make up ko! Nawala na lang bigla ang kilay ko! (Laughs) Then there is this ongoing prank that he does on me that involves fake spiders. (Jodi is arachnophobic) He tries to throw the spider at me at the most inopportune moment and I end up screaming like a little girl! He also has a tendency to auto-correct me... in public! (Laughs) But that’s okay because I encourage him to speak up and speak his mind. I don’t want him to be selfrestrictive because that also hinders his development. Pero siyempre, within reason naman. “ Being a Showbiz Mom

Surely, as I have said previously, it would be more difficult bcmag.ph

to raise a child when you’re in show business. Jodi seems to be taking it all in stride and with grace. She explains that she has introduced Thirdy to what she does for a living by taking him to the set sometimes. “I’ve taken him to work a couple of times and I explained to him that this is my job and when I’m at work, I’m an actress. This is just mommy’s work. But at home, I’m just mommy.” She expresses her reservations as well to exposing him too much. “Blunt as it may sound, the truth is, this business has a tendency to corrupt young minds. These children are working with adults and you know how adults are. They tend to say or do certain things that may be perfectly fine for adult company but may not be appropriate for children. That’s what I am trying to avoid.” She also avoids talking about her split with Thirdy’s father, Pampi Lacson.

76

bc

MAY 2012 philippines

Pampi is the son of Senator Panfilo Lacson, and is Jodi’s husband. “I can’t really say anything about it because the annulment case is still ongoing. He’s a good dad to Thirdy and that’s all I can say about it.” She says graciously. Surely, one can get a bit wary and cautious with love when you go through something as traumatic and devastating as the end of a relationship, right? Does Jodi have any regrets? “None at all. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have any mistakes. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but I do not regret them kasi this molds and shapes us into being a better person. Cliché as it may sound, the truth is, I only regret the things that I haven’t done. Besides, there’s too much stress involved in wallowing and pondering on regrets.” What about love then? Does she still believe in love? “I’ve never lost faith. I believe that if it is destined, it will come. I’ve never been jaded by it, and

I truly believe in it. But I am not in any kind of rush to find love again. I know I will find it and one day it will come to me, but right now, I just want to be Thirdy’s mom.” Perhaps another pitfall a celebrity mom has is the lack of time to devote to one’s self. This isn’t too much of an issue for Jodi. In fact, she is adamant about having some quality time for herself. “I think it’s important that we take time out for ourselves naman. I think it is imperative that parents, regardless of whether you are a mom or a dad, should have time for themselves. It’s not a suggestion, it is a strong recommendation. Kids are highly receptive and perceptive and if they see that you’re stressed, they’ll get stressed and the cycle goes round and round. I make time for myself, even if it’s just to go out and have a cup of coffee with friends. I’ve always been an introvert and preferred the solace of my home than the call of night clubs. ‘Di ako bcmag.ph

ma-party na tao. I read a lot in my spare time. (Jodi is a voracious reader) I like reading because it gives me that sense of calm while expanding my knowledge. I like having discussions with friends about a plethora of different topics because I’m really interested in what other people have to say about a certain topic. I am naturally inquisitive, so I love learning from other people as well.”

I think it is imperative that parents, regardless of whether you are a mom or a dad, should have time for themselves.

A mother, a product endorser, an actress, and a philanthropist as well—Jodi actively supports the 71 Dreams Foundation, a subsidiary foundation of Jodi’s home network, ABS-CBN. The foundation’s advocacy of helping individual and families to fulfill their dreams and serve as channel for people/individual who wish to make a difference in the lives of our fellow Filipinos has gained relentless support from Jodi. She also supports and shares her time with a women’s correctional facility in the south. Bonding Time

Being a working single mom may curtail bonding time with your child. It seems to be a non-obstacle for Jodi and Thirdy. She has now taken to learning how to play Beyblades, memorizing who the WWE and WWF wrestlers are, and the difference between the two wrestling companies and other boy interests. She proudly states that she adjusts to what Thirdy would find interest in. They also go on a lot of out of town trips, their favourite destination would be anywhere where there’s a beach. “Thirdy loves the beach! He is a water baby.” If and when possible, they would go out on international trips, mostly in large amusement parks that kids Thirdy’s age would love to go to. Pearls of Wisdom

Though she may look younger than her age, Jodi possesses a certain old world wisdom that belies it. She can openly and eagerly discuss a wide range of topics with you but at the same time, she can also goof off and plan pranks and be suddenly verbose in gayspeak. She laughs at the question, “Are you aware bcmag.ph

that you’re beautiful?” Through the fit of giggles, she explains that this is a double-edged sword. “If you go one way and say that you are aware, you’re suddenly thought of as a vain person. If on the other hand, you say that you’re not, they’d say you’re fishing, or it’s all about false modesty!” “You learn a lot from this business,” she says wistfully. Every experience that she’s had has helped prepare her for situations that require her to make important decisions. In her life and career, she has managed to reach to the top without being tabloid fodder. Perhaps it is this kind of philosophy and outlook in life prepared her to be a good parent for Thirdy. As a parent, there are just so much lessons you want to impart to your children. It’s not like you can roll the dice and give out just one lesson and hope that’s enough to equip him for life. Jodi is grateful to have her mother to guide her and

prepare her for her own experience of motherhood. “It’s not an easy job. I’m lucky that I have my mom with me, and support from relatives and friends. If there’s one lesson that I want my son to know, it is this: life is all about choices. The choices that we make in life affect the future in the form of consequences, and affects the past in the form of redemption. So, he has to be wise in making his choices in life. But wherever his choices lead him, I will always be there to support and guide him.” Whatever path it may be, I’m pretty sure that Jodi would be proud of Thirdy. bc

The Kids Get Ready to Play Parents and kids are no longer afraid to step out of the sun thanks to Johnson & Johnson’s range of childcare products especially designed with your kids’ needs in mind. The afternoon was kicked off with a press lunch at Dencio’s in Market Market, where we learned that ironically, during summer, less kids play outside because of mom’s worries, like bungang araw. Johnson’s Play Days 2012 aims to address parents’ concerns about child’s play during summer with a range of bath soaps, powders, and colognes to keep your little one feeling fresh and clean all day. With the promise of “No Bungang Araw, Walang Lagkit Feeling, No Amoy Araw,” Johnson’s aims to let our kids play in the sun, with the first ever travelling playground, the Johnson’s Travelling Playbus, which was also showcased in the fun-filled event hosted by Hilary Isaac and Gab Santos. Market Market’s activity center was transformed into a fun playground for kids of all ages, who enjoyed the free games, product testing, and a dance number by Going Bulilit’s Cha Cha and Bugoy. 1 Going Bulilit's Cha Cha and Bugoy perform a dance number, featuring J&J's Play Days theme song 2 Kids enjoying the free games at the Market! S h i r ly B r e n e r Kariz Favis: Hollywood calling. Shirly Brener: I first found myself

in Hollywood when I was 2. My father, an Israel freestyle record-holder swimmer, got a scholarship to UCLA. We resided in Pasadena back then. In my teens, after spending my childhood in several countries—ranging from Israel, England and the U.S.—post my parents’ divorce, my Mom and I moved to LA permanently. My mother was a famous film and theater actress in Israel. I used to ride along with her to her plays and shoots, and recite all her lines—the whole thing fascinated me. At an early age, I took piano, dance, art and singing lessons. I always knew I was an artist. I asked my parents early on to get me into the business, but they didn’t want me to become a child actor. At 15, I joined the prestigious theater program at Beverly Hills high school, and by the time I was 21, I shot my first major motion film comedy starring Henry Thomas titled, Highjacking Hollywood. Where you’ve seen her.

My favorite job to date is Righteous Kill, working with two of the greatest legends in cinema—Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Streets of Blood with Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone and 50 Cent, was also a great experience. In the film Touched, I play the lead, Monique, who is a manic-depressive, bipolar, physically and mentally abusive mother. This role was very difficult to adapt to because I could not imagine ever abusing my child. However, I’m glad to bring a film to life that encourages awareness of abuse, which is a growing epidemic in many families globally, and I’m glad to send out a message of forgiveness. Coming from a Jewish background with a Holocaust survivor grandmother, I realize that if we cannot forgive, we cannot move on and soar to new heights as people.

She has ballet, tap, swimming, musical theater, Karate, voice, piano, and private tutoring in Math and English. I believe in enriching your kids as much as you can. On her film production company.

I formed Brener Films in 2009, and have produced the psychological thriller, Session, starring Steven Bauer and Bar Refaeli, and was also part of the producing team for The Chicago 8 with Danny Masterson, Gary Cole, and Phillip Baker Hall. [I also produced] Asleep at the Wheel, directed by Billy Chartof, and Everyone Wants the Kush, a hysterical comedy written by Brian Hernandez, Younger Robins, and my hubby, Bruce Rubenstein. I have a 6-picture deal as a producing partner with Praxis Films, and we signed an agreement with Radar Pictures. I’m particularly excited to be under the wing of such a powerful, studio-based company. Admiration for her husband, the artist Bruce Rubenstein.

Bruce is what I define a multifaceted artist. He started as a student at Parson’s School of Design, and went on to create paintings and murals both for personal collectors like Governor Schwarzenegger, Madonna, Jules Haimowitz, Meshulam Riklis, as well as public arebcmag.ph

nas. He was in-charge of the restoration of the Fonda Theater and Kodak Center in Los Angeles. He is an assemblage artist, in the vein of Rauschenberg. His heroes are Jasper Johns, Franz Kline, Andy Warhol, Basquiat, de Kooning, Malevich and others. It’s amazing to live in a home with somebody so creative that it pushes me to the next level with my acting. He teaches me to trust my raw talent, and to communicate in my art my true voice—not what others try to mold me to be. He also has a flourishing interior design company, and also did Wolfgang Puck’s new establishment, Rise. He is an accomplished screenplay writer, and ran Mickey Rourke ‘s production company for over 10 years during the years of Barfly, 9 ½ Weeks, and Diner. I’m so lucky to share my home with somebody as talented and as diverse, and to have married the love of my life. Being a star in Israel.

I come from a lineage of very interesting folks. My grandfather, Mila (I named my daughter after him), was

one of the first shipping tycoons in the ‘60s, and my grandmother, Michal, is the ancestor to the first president of Israel—Chaim Weizmann—and the Weizmann family is the closest thing in Israel to the Bushs or the Kennedys. In the late ‘90s, I ended up visiting Israel for a couple of months, and booked my first job as a series regular on the most popular nighttime drama (The Israeli version of The OC). Simultaneously, MTV brought the Singled Out format, and I hosted both shows concurrent on two different networks. The size of the country, the visibility on two major networks, and the history of the family made me an overnight star. Those were amazing years, and I got the best training in every aspect of the business. How her style has evolved as a parent.

My dear friend, the producer Lati Grobman, always says that no matter where I go, I always manage to make it look “chic.” I love her for saying that! My favorite look will always be a great pair of jeans and a cute T-shirt— Frankie B, True Religion, 7, Rock &

Republic, Hudson, etc. I’m also a shoe freak—definitely every woman has an Imelda Marcos complex—so in the summer it’s gladiators and flip-flops in every color and style. On how to get her awesome abs.

I’m a Bikram Yoga girl—that’s the sweaty one you do in the sauna—been practicing it for over 4 years, and do it 3 to 4 times per week. I love running, and do 4 to 6 km about 3 times per week, with a lot of circuit training and calisthenics. People don’t understand that they spend years at the gym and don’t get the right results because they are not training properly—they push equipment around instead of pushing their own body weight, which is way more beneficial. I’m a very competitive person, mostly with myself, and sports encourage that. I cut a lot of crap out of my diet—dairy, caffeine, soda, sugar, artificial sweeteners, cigarettes, alcohol, carbs. I love seaweed, coconut water, kambucha, olives, and avocados. I count calories and really stay away from processed foods and rice, bread, bcmag.ph

Coming from a Jewish background with a Holocaust survivor grandmother, I realize that if we cannot forgive, we cannot move on and soar to new heights as people. pasta—those are killers. I’ll take a sashimi dinner any night over creamy Fettucini Alfredo. I try not to eat after 7 PM, and drink a lot of protein shakes that don’t have hidden sugar. Those will surely keep you full and cut you up, especially if you are exercising. I mostly eat raw organic veggies, fish, some turkey and chicken, and make sure the meat is not infused with hormones—those make you blow up, and very rarely have red meat. When I was preggers with Mila, I gained 50 lbs—and on a 5’5”, barely 110 lb. girl, that extra weight was another half a person. It took me almost a year to lose all the weight, with a lot of hard work. I believe in the “80/20 rule.” As long as you do something 80% of the time, you can cheat the other 20%. My favorite cheats is a dark chocolate mocha from Coffee Bean with some whipped cream, or an ice blended caramel frappucinno. It’s not about being the thinnest girl in the room, it’s about being the healthiest, strongest—and when your body is strong and healthy and you put good products in it, you glow. As for my abs, a lot of it is genetics. Even after the pregnancy, I didn’t get stretch marks. I do about 200 sit-ups, that’s all my body needs. I do tons of lunges and squats for my thighs and legs. Everybody has problem areas that they need to address harder. An organic lifestyle.

I am way stricter than Bruce and Mila. I came from a Jewish family of predominantly overweight individuals. To Bruce, a salad is a salad—it’s always healthy. Mila, interestingly enough, hates cupcakes and is not a big fan of creamy cakes. She also really likes broccoli, seaweed, and raw veggies. I try to pack healthy stuff for her in her lunchbox that I buy mostly at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, like string cheese, green apple, naturally sweetened juice boxes. Raising a 5-year old despite packed worked schedules.

take Mila to school, do my full gym workout, and ready to start the day before 9 AM. I also enjoy wrapping up a production meeting by 4:30, because I have to pick Mila up from school and take her to musical theater class. I have an amazing nanny named Sandra who has been with us since Mila was 3 weeks old. Mila is very attached to her. My mom helps, too—she takes her to Sunday school, swimming classes, and Mila sleeps over her house almost every Saturday. On being big on extra-curricular activities for Mila.

She has ballet, tap, swimming, musical theater, Karate, voice, piano, and private tutoring in Math and English. I believe in enriching your kids as much as you can. My parents facilitated that type of education with me, and it’s helped me become a well-rounded person. It’s a very Japanese way of upbringing. I believe that’s why their economy, education system, art, sports and country have prevailed. We’ve taught Mila snow skiing and then water-skiing in the summer. She is fearless and loves her lessons. If we ever miss any of them, she sulks, and is sad the whole day. Mila is also the youngest kid to be put in Kindergarten. She has always been advanced and I strongly feel that a lot of it has to do with the enrichment programs that we’ve implemented since she was 18 months. Exciting places they travel to as a family.

Definitely Negril, Jamaica. We loved the culture, food, music, and the Caribbean white sands and turquoise waters. We toured the reggae music scene and participated in limbo competitions. Mila and I got beaded cornrows in our hair and spent 10 days like that. We also go to Israel at least once a year. The flight is grueling, but once we get there, we are surrounded with family and love. We like to hit resorts like Eilat, and enjoy Tel Aviv, targeting flea markets, and going to the ancient city

of Jerusalem while still visiting various parts of my hometown, Haifa. We also love skiing resorts like Big Bear and Park City, Utah. Mila comes to the set.

When she was just 7 weeks, I got cast in a lead in The Killing Grounds opposite Armand Assante. I had to go to Eastern Europe for 2 months, and I was still nursing. From an early age she knew to be quiet when the director yells, “Action!” Now that she is bigger, she likes to come and sit behind the camera with the Director and the Script Supervisor and yell, “Action!” Everybody gets a kick out of it. When Mila was 6 months, Ford Models signed her, so she is a pro at this. For her, a film set is like a giant playground, and for myself, it’s a chance to spend some time with her while working. Tips for parents who want to get their kids

involved in the entertainment industry.

Mila has done ads for Honda, Walmart, is the face of Saurette, and has been in a movie that won 2nd place at the People’s Choice Awards titled, What Goes Around. I think the only reason this worked out for us is because I’m in the business. It takes a lot of time, work, attention, and dedication. You have to drive all over for auditions and shoots, and constantly be in the know, have professional photos taken, and make resumes. If there are moms seriously considering this, they should first make sure that the kid wants it just the same. I often see moms at castings that probably wanted to be actresses and sort of missed the boat, and are now pushing the daughters, while the little girls could care less about it. And find a real agent, somebody with credentials—I hear that there are a lot of charlatans that take your money and never get the kids appointments and bookings. bc
