BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE SPEllING-MCDERMoTT FAMIly IN BEVERly HIllS; My HuSBAND, MARTIN, WITH TANyA AND MARK lAPID

Happy Anniversary, BC! Has it really been a year since we put out the maiden issue of BC Philippines? I know where my extra weight goes to—as evidenced on the scale—but the time? I feel like I am on this tight race where my daughters’ clothes and shoes are getting smaller, while our dogs, Bruce and Sera, are 11 and 1½ respectively (she was just a puppy!). Wow. Now that BC has two editions globally—in the U.S. and in the Philippines—the former going on its 6th year, and the latter going on its 2nd, I still feel giddy everytime an issue is printed. I guess it’s like that when you’ve been involved with something since its inception. Much like with our own children—every new milestone is a highlight. To celebrate BC Philippines’ first anniversary, we have a special double cover. My husband photographed both, and it was a meticulous decision regarding which family would best represent this achievement. Because Tori Spelling’s family was also a cover for one of BC U.S.’s anniversaries, we thought it would be perfect to have them with the Lapids—apart from both broods parenting two children each. On the Spelling-McDermott shoot, I still recall the TV cameras and crew that arrived earlier at our studio in Beverly Hills to set up. I remember how everything and everyone was so professional and efficient—and how it seemed perfectly ordinary when Tori herself drove to our location in her Cherokee Jeep with her kids and a nanny before call time, followed a few hours later by her husband, Dean McDermott (who came from a visit to the dentist)

You’ll catch my husband shooting, and can even view my polkadot cardigan and the back of my head in some parts. Teehee. Tori’s kids, Liam and Stella, are so lovely and well-behaved, and props go to their parents for this. It’s delightful to see how Liam physically takes after his mom (actually, more like Tori’s father, Aaron Spelling), while Stella resembles her dad. I wonder who their new baby will look like… As for the Lapids, I unfortunately, could not make for their cover shoot since I was down with a horrible flu that left me bedridden and taking a trip to the E.R. for suspected dengue. Thankfully, my blood test was clear. I guess it’s another one of those aging signs where even a fever can take a huge toll on your body. Good thing we’ve known Tanya even before I had my first child, having worked with her for a men’s magazine we previously owned prior to BC. I have nothing but good things to say about her, and I’m glad that we are able to reconnect after many years. I am ecstatic that she found Mark Lapid, who seems just as down-to-earth and easygoing as she is. As for their daughters, they are just too cute for words, and I can’t wait to pinch those faces in person. At this point, it is only apt to send out my gratitude to our readers and advertisers for believing in BC. Here’s looking forward to greater and more years ahead together of providing you with the best choices for your family.

e’ve all heard of pneumonia before. A dreaded lung disease, feared because of the possible outcome of death. Every one of us have known and followed preventive measures, whether they are based on superstitions such as shielding your back from cold air for risk of getting sick, or, through more scientific ways, such as getting a vaccination. However famous this illness is, it has a brother that few know about, and its name is Walking Pneumonia. Before we all break out in a state of pandemonium and start hiding the kids in fear of them contracting this illness, we should first know what we are up against. Walking Pneumonia, contrary to its name, is not a creature that spreads the disease; though it is caused by living microbes, rather, it is

only one of the many forms of pneumonia. It is called such because persons with this malady are only mildly sick and can still go about their daily businesses and activities. It is more formally named as “atypical pneumonia” because the causes and symptoms are very unlike those of the conventional type. The traditional or typical pneumonia in general, is an infection that affects the alveoli, which are the small air sacs in the lungs, where red blood cells deposit carbon dioxide through the sac’s thin walls, and pick up the inhaled oxygen. In fighting the invasion, white blood cells swarm the infected area and fills up the tiny air sacs, together with pus, mucus, and other fluids. Another possible effect of the infection is that the walls of the alveolus swell up or ruptures, causing blood from the lung capillaries to flood the alveolar spaces. Either way, this causes the alveoli to get clogged and oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange cannot occur in the imwww.bcmag.ph

PreVention paired area, making it virtually dysfunctional and solid. There are over thirty possible causes of pneumonia, including the inhalation of dust particles, foodstuff and/or stomach acid. Of the many different causes, the most common are bacteria, viruses and fungi. For the typical pneumonia, the most common cause of it is the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. Walking pneumonia is brought on by the Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which can only exist in living cells because of its simple structure and lack of a cell wall. Frequent contractors of this bacteria range from school children to young adults, while toddlers, preschoolers and the elderly often get viral pneumonia such as influenza. Despite being unfamiliar, walking pneumonia is very common. Although it takes a long exposure from someone who is sick for a healthy person to acquire this disease, because of the mild symptoms, afflicted persons often don’t stay at home, increasing the chances of others to be infected as well. It spreads much like how an ordinary flu does, only, it takes a longer period of time before you can acquire it. Signs and symptoms of this dreaded disease, as mentioned earlier, are milder than that of the typical pneumonia, but can be just as annoying. Similar to colds, the symptoms include sore throat, dry cough, headache, chills, fever, and malaise, with the inclusion of rashes, lump in the neck, ear pain, and increased respiratory rate in some. The distinction between a cold and walking pneumonia is the severity and the time frame, whereas colds and

flu lasts for a week, this illness’ symptoms may linger for up to a month. What’s more is that flu and cough medicines won’t easily alleviate its symptoms, particularly coughing. The best way to treat this disease is to take antibiotics and rest in bed, but since some antibiotics can be too strong and be too harmful in large dosages (especially for kids), consult your doctor at the slightest sign of this illness, or even for just a cold, so he could recommend and prescribe the proper medication. Aside from pharmaceuticals, prevention is still better than cure. The pneumococcal vaccine, is against most types of pneumonia-causing bacteria. This boosts the body’s immunity by exposing it to the inactivated form of the bacteria. There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine, PPSV23, which is recommended for the elderly and high-risk or sickly individuals aged two and above; and PCV13, an improved version of the PCV7, routinely given to two month-old infants up to five-year old kids. Of course, it goes without saying that a healthy lifestyle is the best option to avoid illness. Since persons with weak immunity are more vulnerable to the various pneumonia-causing bacteria, it is ideal to build up your immunity by eating vitamin rich food and citrus fruits, and having ample rest and exercise. Avoid vices and cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief when in polluted areas to filter the air you’ll breathe in. It has also been found that sneezing on the crook of your arm rather than your hands is more sanitary, so you don’t spread germs through handshakes and the like. Keep your home free from dust and molds that could weaken the lungs. bc

aside from the dangers of walking pneumonia, parents should also watch out for the cold and ﬂu season, as it poses risks for kids with asthma. its symptoms can be worsened, creating a potentially dangerous situation for children. dr. Beth allen, a physician of pulmonary medicine and faculty member at ohio State University College of medicine, said in a news release that 30 percent of kids who are admitted to the hospital with the ﬂu have asthma, putting them at risk for also developing pneumonia. "all it takes is one trigger—a common cold, a change in the weather, allergens that kids are exposed to, cigarette smoke—any of those things might trigger already irritated airways to become even more agitated," she said. To protect your little ones and avoid ending up in the ER, here are some preventive measures:

Children could get a ﬂu shot to give their immune system a head start against any viruses. kids should get a check up during the colder months to assess their condition ahead of ﬂu season. Children who are prescribed a daily asthma controller should be monitored to make sure they are taking their medication—even when they are feeling well. more importantly, dr. allen advises, "Parents should be able to recognize the symptoms, know which medicines to use if they develop, and know when to call the doctor if that medicine is failing. ideally, they should walk away from a doctor's visit with this all written down in what we call an asthma action plan." www.bcmag.ph

But hearing loss and brain damage can get in the way of that, especially for babies who catch the bacteria that may cause both otitis media and meningitis. Otitis Media, or “luga,” is an ear infection that is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in the country,(2) while meningitis is an infection of the brain that may lead to mental retardation. am not one to find watching TV to be relaxing. Blame it on the many years I spent in front of the camera. But when I watch TV, I find myself analyzing the news, criticizing the production—basically, even if I am just watching a sit-com, I still think of TV as work.

I do not even believe in having a TV set in our bedroom. To me, your bedroom is for rest, reading, and okay, yes, parental recreation. But I find that having a TV in the room prevents me from getting real rest when I need to go to bed. I wouldn’t even consider watching TV until I fall asleep. Even your basic Feng Shui will tell you that having a TV in the bedroom

is bad for fertility. I’m a believer. Because of my former profession, you would think that I would have absolutely no problem with the “no TV before 2” rule when it comes to my children. Think again. Make no mistake, my pediatrician has told me that children under the age of 2 are not to watch TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours on a daily basis. And that includes both TV and video games. The reasoning is simple: During the first 2 years of life, your child’s brain is developing rapidly, absorbing information, and learning like www.bcmag.ph

educational video that I played for him over and over again. A playmate of his, only 6 months older, was allowed to watch the educational videos that teach your baby how to read. When we go to the library together, that older boy reads simple books to my son.

And so, twice a day, my youngest, now 9 months old, watches those same videos in hopes that he, too will learn the same way. He already claps when he hears the song and sees the word “clap” on TV. At the same time, it buys me precious moments to prepare meals while my little one is preoccupied. After all, living in the U.S. without the luxury of help, I need to do what I can to get by.

a sponge. Why watch TV when the real way to learn is to play, touch, explore, and interact with the rest of the world? I couldn’t agree with that more. In a typical week, my older son goes to swim class twice a week, soccer practice once a week, preschool once a week, and on free days, we go to local petting zoos, children’s museums, the library, and of course the playground (both indoor and outdoor). On weekends, we make sure we do something fun and educational for the kids constantly. I am a true believer in exposing my children to as many educational and enriching activities as we can. But I’m not the super mom that you might think I am. Because, guilty as charged, I let my kids watch a very moderate amount of TV. Because despite all the studies, I still believe that my kids have picked up some good stuff from TV. My now 2.5 year old can read letters and knows their sounds because of an

My preschooler is also allotted no more than a couple of hours a day for his favorite educational shows as well. While I use the time to work on my chores, I make sure that I stay in the room and watch alongside him so I know what he is watching. I make sure he doesn’t watch anything violent in nature or inappropriate for his age. In fact, his exposure to TV is purely educational programming. We watch our TV shows and the news after the kids have gone to bed. By no means is the TV set our babysitter. Even some children’s advocates admit that some educational programming can be beneficial. I’d like to think of it as occasional educational entertainment. I’d like to think that there is a safe middle ground when it comes to the TV rule for your kids. While you don’t want to let them have the TV on all day, just like anything else in life, moderation is okay in my book. And if that means that my other responsibilities will have to wait until the kids are asleep, then that is okay too. The truth is, my kids play better and are happier when the TV set isn’t on. But I won’t lie. I have long allowed my kids to watch TV. But I hardly think that I am ruining their childhood. There will be no couch potatoes amongst my offspring. And you can guarantee, there will be no TVs in their rooms when they get older. bc

nce upon a time, we entered into a life of fables. We fell in love very quickly—I, at least, knew at first glance. We were quick friends and soon into the quick. The thick of it had us off within the year to India to be married in a Hindu ceremony at dusk, sprinkled in holy milk, incense, marigolds and sanskrit promises. All of this on a palace floating in the middle of an ancient lake in the desert folds of the storied land of Rajas south of Delhi. Parenthood, equally mysterious, came the next year. To our growing daughters we often told of how mommy and daddy were wed—truly bound up—in their marriage odyssey in India! After a decade of traveling with them all over the world, our daughters were seasoned enough for induction to Indian

travel themselves. For a voyage to India, a child must be ready in the simplest and most fundamental ways. They must be self-sufficient on long plane rides and not afraid of new foods or exotic places to tuck in for the night. We also figured it would be a good idea if our youngest daughter, 6, was big enough to not put everything in her mouth. The girls are now also savvy enough not to rush headlong into the typical Indian oncoming traffic of cars, tuk-tuks, camels, cows, rickshaws, Tata trucks, sadhus, brightly sari’d water-pot-on-head bearing women, red-beetle-spitting-London-toadypant-wearing men, cripples, lepers, urchins, milkmen, sweet chili-crisp food carts, Hindu funerals, Muslim 3-storypapier-mache-tower-toting parades, elephants and the occasional really cute little puppy covered in mange.

They had to be metaphysically ready as well. I mean we, as nurturing parents, had to steel them for the full cosmos of madness that India presents to the Western mind. India is all about submersion, plunging full into a world that is seemingly not of our ken. It is the dream turned inside out. India is the richest silk, the most threadbare cotton, and constantly the wildest, most garish glittering rayon. We keep a vibrant and colorful home, full of creativity and gardens and pets. They know about life and death and the sense of cycle this entails. We guessed, very correctly, that they were out of their milk teeth far enough to bite into this old, weird apple. You have to be able to go all the way in, in order to get all the way back out of India. Our CHICKS proved to be heartily up to the task. www.bcmag.ph

1. Originally this was the temple room in the exquisite Kankarwa Haveli along the Lal Ghat with views of our Floating Palace. Now it was a perfect little bedroom for our CHICKS. 2. Our first day in Delhi. We tried to do kid-oriented outings. The train museum is a good introduction to the sense of history that pervades the place, as well as to the discord and disintegration of infrastructure at every turn. The International Doll Museum was even freakier. 3. Fun with pigeons outside the City Palace of Jaipur. 4. Life takes on a different pace down on the farm. A camel hayride through rural India. 5. There used to be all manner of wild animals in Rajasthan. Then the Rajas, while hanging out with the likes of Errol Flynn, put them all in museums. 6. With the manic eyes of Krishna staring on, Mette makes good with the temple woman after her sister chucked the offering sweets on the ﬂoor, thinking them dangerous to eat coming from the hand of a crone. Laugh. Learn. Listen. Labor. Life. Many words to describe “family,” start with a letter so fundamental. In the Lapid household, it all starts, revolves around, and ends with something so pure and basic in four-letters.

Not much is documented about the personal and familial life of this beautiful, freshfaced actress, Tanya Lyttle (more so known as Garcia) and dashing politician, the former Pampanga governor, Mark Lapid. They open their Greenmeadows home to BC (the rental, that is, while their own and bigger one is being built in the same village). Inside the abode are additional two adorable dwellers—the charming, dinosaur-loving, 4-year old Mischa Amidala, and her equally cute 1-year old baby sister, Matilda Anika. These sisters are growing up to the best that their parents’ polar backgrounds have to offer. Black and white. Day and night. East and West. I cook pasta; you want adobo— where the couple’s differences make for the

best of both worlds. The handsome pair trade well-meaning verbal jabs in jest, as they talk about how their differences make them tick. Let’s start with how they met. To this day, Mark denies ever having seen the TV soap opera that launched Tanya’s career opposite a young Dingdong Dantes in “Sana Ay Ikaw na Nga.” Tanya states that, “We did a movie together, called ‘Batas Militar,’ and then he became my number one fan.” Mark claims the opposite and that she is, in fact, his number one fan and that Tanya fell into love at first sight with him. She laughs in disbelief. “Ang kapal ng mukha mo, of course not. I didn’t even know him.” They proceeded to date steadily even after the filming.

As the daughter of a Filipina and an American, Tanya’s background is a far cry from Mark’s. She paints a picture of a much more liberated and Westernized upbringing, where the use of “po,” “opo,” and the tradition of pagmamano— staples in Mark’s family—did not figure at all. And yet, despite the disparity in how they were raised, these two seem like peas in a pod; like hand in glove. After all, considering all that they’ve been through in the six years they’ve been together, Mark and Tanya Lapid seem like perfect co-captains ready to do whatever it takes to keep their family afloat even against the roughest of seas and the strongest of storms. Like any other relationship subject to the public’s eyes and talk, couple has had their fair share of intrigues. One of the biggest hurdles they admittedly had to face as a family (which was also quite publicized back in 2007), was when news of Mark’s previous Vegas wedding to another woman surfaced. Moreover, reports claimed that the marriage spawned a baby www.bcmag.ph

girl. Tanya brushes it off as one thing about her husband that she accepts. “I think that was the worst [controversy]. When it comes to Mark and I, wala nang masyadong drama, we talk about it and understand that it’s just part of the relationship. Ang importante, naniniwala ako sa kanya. He knows that I’ll always be here for him, and I’ve proven it. He knows that I don’t care about those things in the past. I wasn’t even part of his life then.” However, the timing was quite ruthless. Tanya adds that, “It came out during the elections, so you don’t know if siniraan lang siya. I was also pregnant with our firstborn. He lost his seat as governor of Pampanga that time, and I felt that nothing could be worse.” Nonetheless, the couple have stayed strong and are now living between this spacious home in Quezon City and in Pampanga, while awaiting the completion of their actual home—and more importantly, their church wedding in 2014 or the year after. “We have a bigNOVEMbER 2011 PHILIPPINES

ger plan for our church wedding,” Mark admits. “It’s better that we’re preparing for it, rather than rushing it.” One thing he must be ready for, though, is his “real” marriage proposition to Tanya at the Eiffel Tower—her personal request. “He doesn’t want to propose kasi proposal pa lang, mahal na,” she jokes. On that topic, Tanya and Mark initially just wanted a wedding at home. Tanya relates that, “We just wanted a simple, civil wedding where the mayor will go to the house. We have plans for a church wedding, to invite all of our friends, but Mark’s mom, it seemed like she was more excited.” Mark was wondering [about the wedding preparations], “He asked, ‘What’s happening?’ I told him that I didn’t know anything too. Their mom even got mad at Mitchie, Mark’s sister, because she was asking, ‘Ate Tans, Mama’s asking what centerpiece you wanted.’ I said, ‘Kahit wala nang flowers.’ So Mitchie told her mom that. His mom got mad. Their mom said to Mitchie, ‘Bakit papayag ka na gano’n lang ‘yung sa kasal ng kuya mo, e noong kasal n’yo nga, gumastos ako...’” Tanya relates fondly.

“Yung may rice,” Mark is quick to jump in, deliberately belaboring the point. And there lies perhaps the most glaring of distinctions between the tall, dark, strapping Porac/Poblacion native, and the petite, alabaster-skinned Fil-Am beauty. Mark, the son of former stuntman-turned action star-turned full-time politician Senator Lito Lapid, grew up in what he himself calls a very typical, traditional Filipino family. His youth in the barrio spent enjoying common street games like patintero and agawan base, Mark candidly acknowledges his very provincial, rural roots in Pampanga and mentions that he speaks in their native dialect very fluently. He also recalls having to live and learn by his dad’s stern parenting. Mark says that he was hardly with his father growing up. “Most of the time, he was shooting or on location, so it’s always my mom who was with us. You have to understand that he was working hard for us so we could go to school and have a good future. He’s a very strict father, most especially when it comes to education, because that’s what he lacks.” Speaking of fond memories, Mark recalls Tanya’s reaction when they found out about her first pregnancy. “Mas grabe s’ya. She was saying, ‘I’m gonna be a mom, I’m gonna be a mom, I’m gonna be a mom.’” He teases her that the first thing she said was, “‘Sana ‘wag mong maging kakulay or kamukha.’ But after she gave birth I told her, ‘O ano, sinong kamukha? Ako. Pero at least ‘yung kulay, sa ‘yo.’” (Laughs)

On the homefront, Tanya tells us how she went to culinary school to better answer the call of Mark’s insatiable appetite. “I enrolled, because he loves to cook and eat. But in the culinary school, hindi...” Her husband finishes the sentence for her, “Hindi lutong bahay.” Tanya continues that, “After that course, I tried cooking for him, but he didn’t appreciate it very much because he prefers Filipino dishes,” Tanya continues, adding that all the French cuisine in the world couldn’t satisfy her hubby’s discriminating Kapampangan palate. She confesses that he continues to don the chef’s hat at home, simply because he prefers dishes he grew up to, like sinigang, crabs, squid, nilaga, kare-kare, adobo, pinaupong manok, and rice. (Pork adobo is also their eldest’s favorite viand—one that she requested and ate for a straight week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

The Lapids appear to have found the formula for overcoming differences in their own upbringing, to striking a working balance in their own parenting. Their secret—none of the “good cop, bad cop” routine when it comes to disciplining their kids. Instead, a modified tag-team approach, where one stays on the sideline, when the other is already on top of things, so to speak. “Wag akong kokontra,” says Tanya, referring to Mark’s mandate from the moment they learned they

were expecting. “Don’t take their side,” Mark adds, while his wife elaborates, “The kids will think what they’re doing is right, so when he gets mad, I just keep quiet. Same goes for him. That’s his number one rule.” At the moment, she has her hands full getting their firstborn used to the idea of sharing with her new sister. Tanya confesses this is not coming easily to Mischa, who seems unready and unwilling for now, to relinquish her crown as the lone apple of Mark and Tanya’s eyes. When asked about her parenting, Tanya claims that, “I don’t think I have a ‘style.’ Everyday you learn something new from your kid, and about yourself—that you can be this patient, or you can you go out of your way to do this for your kid. I’m not strict, but I tell them off. I don’t tolerate Mischa whining

or getting everything that she likes. Like now, she has a little sister so I’m teaching her how to share and how to be an Ate, because for three years, it was just her. It’s kinda hard for her to accept that she’s not the baby anymore. Sometimes I spank her, but I make it a point to explain to her why she’s being spanked or punished.” Speaking more about their offspring, we asked about Mark’s proudest daddy moment. “There was an affair, and Mischa stood up on the stage and then she shouted, “Dada, I love you!” Tanya jokes about her daughter’s public persona. “When there are a lot of people, Mischa shows them that she’s super close to Mark. But really, she’s close to me.” Mark laughs, “When we get home she’ll say, ‘Dada, don’t touch me. Mom!’ Gaganyan siya.” However, Tanya thinks that the

funniest moments between the two still remain, “When she copies Mark’s dance moves.” Mark continues to relate that while Tanya is working on set, he invites Mischa, “While mom’s not here, let’s dance and dance and dance!” Raising these two beautiful young girls well isn’t all that Tanya and Mark have on their plates. Despite the bitterness of losing his seat in the 2007 polls, Mark is now COO of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority or TIEZA. For him, public service is in his blood. “My job is helping people, being a public servant,” Mark declares. “The passion to help others will always be there.” The call of duty came early for him, beginning with the Sangguniang Kabataan at 16, before becoming the youngest governorelect to date in the country at 25. In his current post, Mark often finds himself away from Tanya and the girls, what with his full schedule at the office Monday to Friday, and regular trips out of town to inspect projects and visit potential tourist destinations with the Secretary of Tourism. One of his recent discoveries is in San Vicente, Palawan. Mark describes it as, “Very raw, it’s not developed but it has a 90-kilometer stretch of white sand. Compared to Boracay, which has 4.5 stretch kilometers. This is like being in Hawaii. We’re focused there, hoping we can soon put in amenities, utilities, water, sewerage, roads and electricity.” As for their favorite family-friendly destinations, Boracay Shangri-La came up first. They like the privacy and the fact that it’s not overly–crowded yet. Tanya firmly points out that despite Mark’s demanding schedule, they are determined to keep weekends free for each other and the girls. “‘On weekends we go home to Pampanga and we don’t work,” she states. “He’s doing something for Channel 5 now. I told him on Sundays he can’t do anything else, since it’s a day for us.” Tanya herself has her own tight schedule not just as full-time wife, homemaker, and mom. After successfully completing a certificate course in Salon Management and Beauty Care at the Australian College of Hair and Beauty in 2009, she now owns and operates Alcutraz Hair Studio, which opened at Metrowalk, Ortigas in March of 2010. She keeps herself fit through home videos such as Hip Hop Abs, Vibrex machines, and has also tried Bikram and Plana Forma. Mark quips that Tanya always goes to the dermatologist for maintenance because her skin breaks out when she

misses him. Of course, his wife vehemently denies this, and reports that she’s never had a zit in her life. She is also back in showbusiness, after having signed a two-year contract earlier this year. When asked why she suddenly felt compelled to return to television and the movies, Tanya admitted she felt a yearning after being in semi-retirement. “After four years, I told Mark that I wanna do it,” she shares. “I’m gonna sign up with Viva again. Even when I wasn’t coming out, GMA was still calling, ‘Can you guest here?’ ‘Can you do this soap?’ During those times, I wanted to focus on my first daughter,” Tanya further says. “‘Diba, it’s like that when you’re a first-time mom? You want to be hands-on, 24/7, and then after the second baby, I realized that I wanna do something else.” But the actress says she was adamant about her terms with both Viva and her manager. She set the ground rules of her comeback, stressing that family, and her commitment to them, would always come first. Tanya says firmly. “Now, I’m doing a show [Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin] but it’s only twice a week, so that’s okay. When they were giving me another soap that was going to be three times a week, he didn’t like it also (pointing to her husband). Since he’s working too, who’s gonna be left with the kids?” And that’s precisely all that her supportive hubby asked, when they first tackled the idea of Tanya’s comeback. “We talked about it,” Mark says. “I told her, ‘If you think you can do it, why not, but as long as you know your limitations, then I trust you regarding that. Even if you don’t work, that’s fine. But of course, that’s where she came from, so she’ll look for it. It’s ok as long as she has time for the kids.” In Mark’s words: “We have our own ‘limelight’ in our lives. But we’re both willing to sacrifice those for the sake of our kids, for our family.” And the most important lesson Mark would like to share with other fathers is, “Try to save. Even if you’re still single and as early as you start working, try to plan for your family. When the time comes, don’t get caught off-guard. Nasa huli naman ang pagsisisi, ‘diba?” In a world of odds and ends, this self-confessed ‘probinsiyano’ and his semi-Western wife managed to find each other, and are now finding that in matters of the home and heart, there is no such thing as a great divide. As for those four letters that start with “L”? You guessed it. Love: it’s pretty much staring us in the face. bc

ith the football craze on a bit of hiatus now, the Philippines’ beloved, “mixed race” soccer stars are busy tending to other aspects of their lives. Of course, this gets printed before David Beckham—global soccer legend lauded as much for his ball-kicking and fatherhood skills— comes to Manila to play versus the Azkals, this country’s first glimmer of hope in having a national team represent us in the World Cup. Hailing from Ascot, 31-year old Rob Gier is known as one of the handsomest and most skilled among the team. The softspoken, well-mannered Fil-English is extra busy lately—multitasking as a talent scout searching for half-Filipino footballers with potential from all over the world, while doing feedings, diaper duty, and awaiting milestones of darling newborn daughter, Lily.

K: That is an extraordinary moment. Any funny stories that jump out about being a new father? R: Apart from the poo and the wee? (Laughs) K: Haha, yes. Do you change diapers? R: Yeah... K: That’s good. R: I go through

the same things that every dad goes through. Like you’re changing a diaper, and then stuff happens when the diaper’s off. It is not very nice.

K: Wait ‘til you get peed on your face. Funny pregnancy stories about your wife. Did she crave for anything in particular? R: She just had a craving for yogurt... K: You had it easy. (Laughs) R: Yeah, yeah. Easy. K: Where do you plan to raise Lily? In England or in the Philippines? R: Because of the infant support network in England, it will be

K: So you have family who resides there? R: Well, my mom and dad live here in

Manila and I spend like eight months in a year here, and then I fly back. Now it’s gonna be a little bit more because Lily’s at home, our friends are back home. I’ve always imagined myself bringing up my child there in England, yeah. K: Which is where you were brought up. R: That’s right, yeah.

spending time together. I’m sure there are gonna be tons which is gonna drive me crazy but, yeah, the little things, really. K: And what daddy duty are you looking forward to the most? R: I’m looking forward to being a new, embarrassing dad.

agers and you can embarrass them and stuff, ‘cause my dad embarrassed me when I was a kid...

Basketball pro, olsen Racela, and his lovely designer wife, Melissa, talk about child-rearing, their favorite family destinations, and the importance of a home that their kids can truly enjoy living in

is Nash. Our youngest, Wally, had no occasion when he was born. Kaya Wally. But the funny thing is, my mom told us that those were better than [the original plan, which] was to name us “Pong, Kang and Chow.” My mom is a Mahjong player. So my grandparents talked her out of it. What was it like growing up with your brothers? Were you all athletic and competitive? O: Growing up, Nash and I were a year

apart also so we’re close, we’d get into fights, but Wally, he’s four years younger, so parang hindi siya barkada. But we were close. All of us became basketball players. We all played for our school teams. Up to now, my family loves basketball.

Philippines OLSEN RACELA It was your cousins’ inﬂuence that introduced you to basketball, can you tell us more about that? Olsen: Back then, we were PBA fans.

Ako, rooting for Toyota, and my brother rooting for Crispa. I have two older cousins—one roots for Toyota, and one for Crispa. So that’s how it all started. We would play pickup games together, the four of us, and that’s how I started playing basketball.

your brothers’ names. Can you tell us more about that? O: Yes, they’re far from our real

names. My real name is Rodericko. My younger brother’s name is Raul, then the youngest is Reynaldo, but we’re all R’s. Right now, we carried that tradition. My three kids are all R’s, so si Ryan, si Rafael, and si Raya. My nickname is Olsen, because I was born on All Saints’ Day, my younger brother, Nash, was born on National Heroes’ Day that’s why his nickname

You have a degree in interdisciplinary studies. How did you make the decision to switch paths? O: My dream really was to become a

lawyer and be the next president of the Philippines. I had this idea that lawyers became good presidents. But basketball got in the way, and later on, I realized that I can make a career out of it. What would you say are the highlights of your basketball career? O: I’ve had a long career, so maybe the

championships I’ve won. Particularly, in the UAAP, we won two consecutive championships. My freshman year and my sophomore year, we won back to back in ‘87 and ‘88.

How has being an athlete helped you as a father? O: Being a father takes a lot of patience and understanding.

I actually learned a lot of values because of basketball and I hope my kids would also [do the same]. I always say that the values you learned in sports, you don’t normally learn in school. You and your son share the same jersey number. Any special reason why you chose 17? O: I actually liked a different number—15, because the

player I liked before, wore 15. But there was a mix up or something when they gave us the jerseys. [There was] no more time to change numbers, so sige, 17, and we won that year. That was my first year of playing varsity basketball for Ateneo. When I graduated from college, I stopped wearing 17. I played for a commercial team for three years, then the national team, and I said not to use 17 because it’s a special number. But when I got drafted to play in the PBA, which is every player’s dream, binalik ko yung 17. Maybe my son who’s into basketball got used to seeing me wear it, so nag-17 narin siya. He doesn’t want any other number because it’s a family number.

Philippines That was Ateneo’s first two championships in the UAAP. How did it feel to be part of such a historic moment in Ateneo sports? O: I really didn’t know it was happening because I was a 16-

year old freshman when we won our first [championship]. We were 20 points down, with ten minutes left, I think, against UE. I was a benchwarmer then. I would only get five minutes of play time every game, so I was their cheerleader. But the second year, it was against La Salle, so that was more meaningful because we all know the rivalry, right? So I got to play a bigger role in my second year.

After a long career on the court, you’ve retired earlier this year. What are your plans moving forward and what have you been doing since you left? O: I retired from playing the game, but it’s still basketball for

me, because right now, I coach. So I always say that basketball has been good to me and my family, now it’s time to give back to the sport that has been very good to us. I’m a coach of the Youth Team, and they call it the Energen Pilipinas 16 and Under Youth Team. I’m also an assistant coach of San Miguel, which is called Petron now. www.bcmag.ph

That’s nice. So do you encourage your kids to participate in sports, or does it come naturally to them? O: My eldest, he’s not into sports. He’s into music. But when

he was younger, we would try to get him into all kinds of sports—first it was basketball, then Taekwondo, swimming, tennis, even golf. But the second, when I introduced the game of basketball, I didn’t give up easily, not like with my eldest. Right now that’s his sport. He plays for Ateneo also. Raya is into ballet, gymnastics, and music. Whatever they want to pursue, we’re here to support them, and if it’s basketball, I’m an expert, so I’d be a lot of help. Speaking of parenthood, any funny daddy experiences with the kids? O: Funny experience we had in the States with my two

younger boys, we were in one of the buildings there, we visited our aunt. [My sons were] four and three, so you can just imagine how naughty these boys were. We were walking, and their fire alarm was not high, because it was for the disabled, so if someone is in a wheelchair, they can reach it. They set off the alarm. After that, one by one, everyone in the whole building went downstairs—you know how it is in the States. When we saw this, we immediately informed our aunt. She called 911, told them it was a false alarm. But andun na yung ambulance, fire truck. So hiyang-hiya kami. When we went down building, everyone was outside. We pretended we had nothing to do with it. Lakad-lakad lang kami. Up to now, actually proud pa yung mga anak ko eh when we tell that story.

Philippines MELISSA RACELA How did you and Olsen meet? M: We were set up on a blind

date by well-meaning people who thought I was good enough for him, and he was good enough for me. Somehow it did [work out], ‘cause I didn’t know who he was. Growing up in Bacolod, we didn’t have cable so PBA or UAAP wouldn’t reach there. So I really didn’t know him. You’ve been married for 13 years. How do you keep your relationship strong? M: I hear about a lot of couples [that]

have been together for a long time and then, they would say, “Oh we’re just like brother-sister. This is just for companionship, and there’s no intimacy and everything.” For me, I guess for him also, it’s important that you keep everyday interesting. Like sometimes, he’d go to work and then, I’ll text him from out of the blue, crazy stuff that my kids don’t need to hear.

And then one of [my friends] texted me, she said, “Wow, still kilig after all these years?” And then I said, “You know what, if there’s no more kilig, wala nang kwenta ang buhay.” Parang there’s no sense anymore. There’s no fun. You gotta have it, even if you’ve been together for a while. Did you watch Olsen’s games? M: The moment I met him, I

watched all of the games. He was a benchwarmer when he was rookie, and we never thought he’d continue to be playing for 18 years. He never really thought he’d get these awards, eventually become the best point guard of the country. So I’m really proud. If we were to be in a movie, he’s the lead and I’m always the leading lady—support all the way. The kids and I pray to God that he won’t get hurt, and luckily, he never did. That’s why tumagal yung career niya. So, once lang siya na-hurt, when he his teammate accidentally elbowed him,

so he broke his nose. What is your dream for each of them? M: I guess the ultimate dream for every

parent is for their kids to grow up Godfearing and always respectful. ‘Cause I always teach them na whatever— whoever you face, like whatever class you’re dealing with, you treat them the same. I try to teach resourcefulness to my kids. The boys have been begging for bunk beds with a ladder and a study area below. Knowing how much those things cost, we gathered recycled wood and got a carpenter to convert their beds into just that. When they were younger, we would tutor them with their homework. After a few years we trained them to be more responsible and so now they do their homework and review for quizzes on their own. We like to stress the value of effort over ability. For me, teaching them good hygiene is as important as teaching them how to respect girls. I

like to scare them that girls get turned off with bad breath, dirty necklines, etc. (Laughs) As early as now, they know that they have to save money to go on dates. With the age gap, how’s it like raising two teenage boys and a young girl? How is it different? M: In terms of how much they need you, I guess. With

a younger kid, you have to show. You have to teach them, at the same time they have to see that you’re actually doing it, right? ‘Cause when the kids reach teenage years like them, they should have seen that already, diba? So it’s just a reminder na lang. I always tell them, when I was your age, ganito. So I guess, whatever you learn also from parents, you sometimes just pass it on. Depends on what you want to stress. But I always tell them, especially since they’re boys, to deal with girls with respect. [When it comes to raising Raya,] we try our best not to spoil her, because she’s the only girl and the youngest. She’s my real life doll, and although I hug and kiss her every day, I speak to her like an adult. She’s very responsible and generous, she saves her money so she can buy gifts for us and even for Santa! Let’s talk about your business. You mentioned that you sell bags and accessories. How did you get into this? M: I just really love fashion. And ever since I was a kid, I

was already ripping my clothes and I would always want to wear different clothes than other people. Back in the 80’s, it’s either you’re preppy or you’re punk, diba? I was always sewing and designing my own clothes. But, when I got to Manila, I had no choice but to get a corporate job, because I wanted to be independent. So I never really got into the arts or do designing and fashion. It’s just later in life now that I think, my kids are settled—it’s something that I really wanted to do. And with the bags, I was never a person who liked signature stuff. But once I bought my first Louis Vuitton, pre-owned, I saw the business side of it, na I can actually make it as an investment. Funniest or most amusing new mommy experiences when they were little? M: The smell and taking pictures—close-up pictures of their

feet, I love that! And I love the smell of their cheeks, their head. And recording all of their firsts: first smile, the first time they rolled over. What are your must-haves as a mom? Favorite brands or items? M: Changing pads are good ‘cause when you go to the

mall, you can have those. And we actually use them up ‘til now. I have three for the three kids. You know how I use it? When I watch basketball games in the gym, everybody gets to sit on

Philippines changing pads—those that have foams. (Laughs) I always have time busters, like those crossword puzzles, activities for them in each bag, ‘cause they would all have backpacks. For each backpack I would pack pencils and crayons instead of making them bring Nintendos and stuff, ‘cause they actually end up being stolen or misplaced when you’re outside. They get to learn something and they just sit there and write or draw. Educational stuff. Who decorates or designs your house? It’s really pretty. M: Aw, thank you. Both of us did. Olsen wanted a cozy Amer-

ican house, and inside, a Filipiniana theme. We designed the buffet cupboard and our bed. The two of us wanted this simple lang, and we didn’t like anything breakable because we want the kids to be comfortable in our house. If you notice, this one (points to doorway between living room and dining room) has no step. So this one (motions to Raya), may bike, rollerblades, skateboard. You can dribble balls here and nothing valuable will break. This is their home, they should be able to enjoy it. bc

“Hollywood Royalty” is a term that has been thrown around liberally over the years. We all know what it refers to—and the connotation that comes along with it— but, what does it actually mean?

hat separates those who have a seat at the table from the holders of the scepter? On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Beverly Hills, we got the answer to that question, thanks to Tori Spelling and her family.

Like most people who have followed the entertainment industry for the last two decades, we are relatively familiar with Tori’s professional and public life. Her father, Aaron Spelling, holds the Guinness World Record for “most prolific television producer,” with a string of popular TV shows such as “The Love Boat,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “TJ Hooker,” to the more famous, “Melrose Place,” “Beverly Hills, 90210 (which became more controversial because Tori starred in it), “7Th Heaven,” and as of late, “Charmed.” Tori, along with her mother, Candy, and brother, Randy, were housed in the 6-acre Spelling mansion in (where else) Beverly Hills from the time she was 17 years old. It is said to be the largest single-family home in California and is known as, “The Manor.” It reportedly has 123 rooms, a bowling alley, swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis court, screening room and four, 2-car garages. Her mother, Candy, is notorious for her 44-carat diamond ring, and for gifting Tori with a collection of Madame Alexander dolls that were deemed untouchable. She even counts Dean Martin and Barbara Stanwyck as godparent. Google them, if you must. From “Beverly Hills 90210,” to “90210,” and every red carpet in between, Tori has been a series regular in American culture. As our shoot day progressed, we got to learn a little bit about her maternal ways. Tori and her husband, actor Dean McDermott, showed affection for their children that illustrated a refreshing, everyday side to these well-publicized figures. While this family of four (five, as of press time) played in the living room, we got to see Stella and Liam (“Ladybug” and “Monkey” respectively, as they are known to mom and dad) have some fun with their parents, just like any other children. Although there is no question that we were dealing with entertainment blue blood, at the end of the day, it was just another family in love.
