Happy 2nd Anniversary, BC! You are seeing three firsts happening in this issue. This Playdate Cover Contest is one that I am thrilled about, not only because all my three children and myself are in it, but also because we have given, what I feel, is a rare chance to a non-celebrity to be immortalized on the front pages of a magazine. Monaliza and her kids were a delight to work with and know, so it is with pride that I present the outcome of our cover photo shoot, which was not only enjoyable, but I feel came out really chic. Plus, I made new friends in the process, so this experience really is a win-win. I can’t wait for Mona and her kids to see themselves on the newsstands—I know my kids and I are going to have our photo taken beside the cover. Another “first” is our double-cover special on the stunning “Gossip Girl” actress, Kelly Rutherford, whose exclusive and intimate photos were taken in our Beverly Hills, CA studios. It is a look back when Kelly was pregnant with her second baby, Helena, whom I believe is now 3 years old. Hermes, her handsome eldest son, now 6, was still breastfeeding at the time this was shot. Trivia: Kelly and I were both nursing our kids who were already about 3 years of age while we were talking during the shoot. Another memory from this shoot was how Kelly came back to our studio the next day to pick up a gorgeous camel coat she left behind—which was, you guessed it, an Hermes.

She stayed to chat for a bit and even told me about their divorce proceedings at the time (which you’ll find out in a quick online search, has already become tabloid fodder today). It’s also heartwarming to be able to give you a peek into the stylish home and domestic life of my friends, Nikki and Malou Romero, together with their adorable kids. Nikki was my classmate back in high school (he was quite the heartthrob), and has become one of this country’s esteemed architects and businessmen, alongside his father, Reghis, and brother, Mikee. Malou is equally lovely as her half, and busy as a jewelry designer for her own line called “Joanique,” which offers beautifully crafted pieces from the interior design graduate. She adorns herself with her own creations throughout their shoot. Without further ado, this 2nd anniversary issue of BC is in your hands, and I hope you enjoy perusing it. I pray that BC continues to be part of your reading lists, and that we are able to deliver more of the best choices for your families, while information that is useful and fun at the same time. Children also need to express themselves, and this is where creativity comes into play. In Korea, a unique program called Books on Wheels was developed by Lee Jong Gu, whose goal was to expand a child’s thinking territory. The program lets children create a story picture book both written and drawn or illustrated by the child himself through classes with teachers who assist and guide the kids throughout the whole process. The one-of-a-kind Books on Wheels program is now available in the Philippines through the efforts of Mijin Kim, a mom of two. “Books on Wheels is an artist school,

but it’s not an ordinary art school,” Mijin explained. “We have art and writing teachers to help kids publish their own book. After they are done [with it], we send all files to Korea, and then we publish books [there].”

The 1.5-hour long classes (composed of four students per class) take place once a week, with your choice of a weekday or Saturday class, during which children discuss and brainstorm ideas with the art and writing teachers. The program spans 30 to 32 sessions, or 7 to 8 months, with a minimum of 4 sessions and a trial class by appointment.

ne of the things that occupy most nursing mothers’ minds is their milk supply. Why? Because giving babies the nutrients they need is very crucial at this stage, and there’s no better substitute for breastfeeding. Read on to find out how to increase your milk supply, and thereby give your baby the best nurturing they deserve.

Make sure that your milk supply is indeed “low.”

Just because your baby doesn’t nurse as often as before, your breast isn’t leaking, or you don’t suffer from engorgement (hardening/ filling of breasts due to abundance of milk), it doesn’t mean that you’re already lacking on your milk supply. As babies grow older, their milk needs and feeding schedules change, and they become more efficient nursers-–meaning they can empty your breast faster. These occurrences are normal and there are other factors that may indicate that you’re already “low,” such as

Also, if you are a mother to a newborn up to 3 months, try to have feeding sessions at least eight times a day or more, to improve sucking stimulation and give your baby what he or she needs to get through the day. You can have 1 ½ to 2-hour intervals in the morning or afternoon, and every 3 hours at night. Think of yourself.

your baby’s weight. Check also if your child is wetting enough diapers a day, and consult your pediatrician for what’s age-appropriate. All you can do is observe, and once you determine that you indeed have low milk supply, you can already take the necessary steps needed. Use both breasts when feeding.

Called “switch nursing,” offering both breasts to your baby increases milk supply because of the stimulation that comes with sucking. This is also advisable when using a breast pump as it speeds up the emptying of breasts—giving more room for a new supply of milk. Plus, emptying the breasts also gives your baby the fattiest milk (hind milk) that comes out in the end of the nursing session. Feed frequently.

To increase milk supply, you must breastfeed or pump as often as possible. If you pump, look for a machine that works for you. If you can borrow a family’s/friend’s old pump to try out, do so. You can also seek the help of moms from the Medela Moms group, who holds classes at their Medela House at 29 1st St., New Manila, Quezon City. Medela has a new pump called “Swing,” which is a new, and highly-rated electric pump. Philips Avent’s Isis is a great alternative: a portable, manual pump that can rival electric pumps

As the mother, you also need to take care of yourself in order to provide what your baby needs. Be stress-free by resting as much as you can, staying hydrated (drink 6-8 glasses of water per day minimum, or a recommended pitcher of water while nursing), and eating fruits and vegetables, as well as calcium- and protein-rich foods. As much as possible, avoid doing unnecessary diets when lactating, and make sure that you’re getting at least 1,800 calories daily. Avoid bottles and pacifiers.

Switching back and forth between your breast and a bottle may be an issue with your baby’s sucking needs as a newborn. To avoid this confusion, let all these sucking needs be met at your breast and avoid using bottles and pacifiers for at least a month, if possible. If it’s really necessary, choose bottles that have peristaltic nipples, like Pigeon’s, which help avoid nipple confusion. Do research.

There are substances and supplements— also known as “galactagogues”—that help increase milk supply. These can be in the form of herbs, prescription medication, etc., and the most commonly used ones are Brewer’s yeast, alfalfa, blessed thistle, fenugreek, flaxseed, and even oatmeal and malunggay leaves. However, using these can’t be done on impulse and it requires extensive research and a professional consultation to avoid any side effects that can harm you and your baby. Speaking of malunggay or moringa, it has been known to help increase production of milk so try and include it in all forms of your diet—soups, omelets, etc. It also comes in capsule form, such as Pro-Lacta or Natalac, which some moms take thrice a day for the

Galactagogues From herbs to sweets, “galactagogues” come in many forms. Mommy Treats (mommytreats. ph), the brainchild of Paola Loot, offers a wide selection of yummy lactation products (e.g. brownies, chocolate spoons, cookies, and cupcake/muffin bites) that even dads and kids indulge in. A word of advice from Medela Moms’ co-founder, Beng Feliciano: “The best way to increase your milk supply is to have your baby feed on demand! But, if for some reason, you are not around your baby, make sure that you express your milk either by hand or by using a pump every 2 hours. Make sure your gadget works for you, though, and not against you. Ask around to make sure that the pump you are using comes closest to the way the baby sucks—remember, breastfeeding is supply and demand. But, not just any demand—it has to be the speed and suction strength of a baby or else your body will not respond.”

Domperidone is used mainly to treat nausea and vomiting, but it has been found that a side effect is better milk production. However, always use your best judgment as this might defeat the purpose of giving “natural” milk to your baby––although

some say that they will take medication if it means any breastmilk, than none at all. Consult an expert.

It’s always best to resort to professional consultation for the best advice on how to better feed your child. Find a lactation consultant who can evaluate your baby’s nutritional needs, and provide you with sound advice on feeding. There are La Leche league groups in the Philippines, and you can even ask a relative or friend to help guide you. Additionally, a doctor or pediatrician can give you the pros and cons of using prescription medication, so you can decide easily. bc

What may prove more surprising is the pornography industry’s statistics, compiled worldwide, wherein a second is worth 1,000 images—or more: $3,075.64 is spent on pornography every second; 28,258 internet users view pornography every second; and 372 internet us-

ers type porn terms into search engines every second. “There have been several surveys about who’s viewing internet pornography and what consequences they’re experiencing, and the findings are disquieting,” says Jim Wysong, author of The Neutering of the American Male. “In a 20,000-person study recently

conducted by TED.com, porn is the most prevalently cited obstacle for romantic relationships between men and women in their teens and 20s. Women say guys are emotionally unavailable, and men say porn makes them less interested in pursuing a relationship. “In reality, men have been compromising their masculine nature for several decades.” bcmag.ph

A lack of involvement by fathers in raising their sons; the overuse of prescription and illegal drugs; and uncertainty about their gender role have set boys and men back, Wysong says. “We all have a need to feel significant, to be accepted and loved, but those issues prevent some males from developing fulfilling relationships,” Wysong says. “Sexual intimacy is typically a byproduct of emotional intimacy. Unfortunately, when people don’t have a fulfilling relationship, their sexual desires don’t disappear.” Men are often more visual and physical, so they’re able to use pornography to meet some of that need in the short term. But in the long run, they also need the emotional support, nurturing, and deeper connection with a partner, he says. “It becomes a vicious cycle: Males turn to pornography seeking to satisfy unmet needs, and pornography addiction makes it extremely difficult to achieve the balanced, loving relation-

ship that would meet their emotional needs,” he says. A Canadian study found that one in three teenage boys are “heavy porn users,’’ and an Italian study reveals that a large percentage of men there suffer from “sexual anorexia,” a temporary impotence, in their 20s because they were heavily into pornography in their teens, Wysong notes. Parents, especially fathers, need to sit down with their sons and discuss sex. The lack of dialogue leaves young males to seek the answers to their curiosity on their own. Unfortunately, many turn to porn, which does not portray sex in a healthy and balanced way. One of the most destructive things about it is that it portrays women as something to be used rather than valued and respected, Wysong says. “Fortunately, this is something that can be remedied, both on a physical and a mental level,” he says.

arents and educators are always trying to spark student participation, whether it’s in the classroom, in the local community, or throughout the world. When middle school students at Allison Academy in North Miami Beach were asked what they could do to improve their country, they focused on what they understood––bullying, violence, and racism. Those problems are all rooted in the same issues, says Rachel Albert, author of Quest to Telos, a young adult novel where fantasy meets reality and even world peace is possible. bcmag.ph

P E R S O NA L I N T E G R I T Y “They stem from a lack of personal integrity and absence of social responsibility,” she says. “Children who choose to put those values into practice are actively working toward peace. But they can only put into practice what they’ve learned; instilling those values may seem simple, but many parents miss the mark and actually model the opposite.” Throwing money at social problems like racism or violence doesn’t resolve them, Albert says. But children can. “The energy from kids’ excitement can make a real difference and we need their energy focused right here at home,” says the mother of four. “They see problems; it’s up to us to give them the tools to address them.” The following tips can help parents teach their children personal integrity and social responsibility, giving them the keys to world peace. Never lie in front of your kids.

It may seem obvious, but many parents lie in front of their children or encourage them to lie; misstating a child’s age to save money on movie tickets or allowing them to take credit for school projects completed by the parent. These seemingly inconsequential lies suggest it’s OK, even good, to distort the truth. This causes long-term damage a million times more costly than whatever was gained in the short term. Give your kids a reason why.

Author Mark Twain once said that the two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you figure out why. If you fail to tell your kids why we are here, you have missed the opportunity to figure out what motivates them and gets them excited. This is the most important key to getting kids’ cooperation and empowering them to help the world. Don’t criticize your children.

s we mature through our teenage years, one of our first major steps into adulthood is working that first job.

“A first-time job may be awkward and an allaround rude awakening for many, but the accompanying lessons of responsibility and perseverance are absolutely vital,” says financial expert Mark Hansen, author of Success 101 for Teens. “Also, we get our first taste of earned money –– how to spend it, and the value of budgeting it for larger purchases.” But this year continues a trend in recent years: there simply are not enough jobs to go around during this rough economy. The 2011 employment average –– peak season for those aged 16 to 24 –– was only 48.8 percent for young people, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s the lowest percentage since the Bureau began collecting such data in 1948.

n 1990, a group of California natives who simply wanted to have a healthy lifestyle came up with the concept of having their own juice club. Fast forward to today, that juice club is now known as Jamba Juice—the mega juice chain that arrived in Philippine shores November of last year. Fraz Calicdan, General Manager of the flagship branch at the Fort shared, “In 1995, it has been renamed as ‘Jamba,’ which actually means ‘to celebrate.’ From then on, more stores opened in Northern and Southern California as well. Today, there are roughly 700 branches already in the United States.” As for the Philippines, there are already four branches serving their bestsellers. Yanee Nunez and Nina Almoro, the two women who worked up a storm for our visit, presented us with six titillating dishes that married Filipino ingredients with French staples. From the Truffles Pasta (tagliatelle pasta bathed in light yet invigorating cream sauce topped with our much-loved Pinoy chicharon) to the Longanisa and Shrimp Pasta, Pan Fry Salmon (which was surprisingly dressed with wasabi and dill sauce) and Lamb Shank Stew (delectably cooked in red wine and served with pommes dauphine), to the best-selling Porkchop with Spinach Sauce, families are sure to find a hearty meal in every visit. Kuisine, which is conveniently located in the burgeoning compound of Molito in Alabang, is currently in its soft opening, but are already capable of catering to parties and large gatherings. The first and second floors can accommodate 30 people each, and the upper floor serves as a great place to hold personal and corporate celebrations. Also notable about Kuisine is its ambiance, which is highlighted by the gorgeous interiors inspired by a restaurant called Ladurée in Champs-Elysées. The walls are painted mint green, while another side has a brick wall design. Paintings were handpicked and bought in Paris by Nina Almoro herself, during her year-long training in Le Cordon Bleu. Hanging above one corner of the room is a charming chandelier, offset by a wall mural of the Eiffel Tower, to remind the owners (and guests) of their love for the City of Light. Families will enjoy casual dining in this non-intimidating, accessible, and affordable brasserie-inspired restaurant. The owners have successfully created a one-of-a-kind ambience that will make you yearn for home and a hearty meal, topped by some bubbly. The menu is simple and easy to understand, and the place itself is familyand child-friendly. Even the little tots will enjoy the pizza and pasta combinations they offer. You can introduce your tots to Japanese cuisine through their kid-friendly offerings such as the chicken tempura, chicken teriyaki, and tempura. If you’re looking to feast on maki, get ready to shell out P100 to P280, while rice toppings can cost you P450 to P550 per head. J.Co came to the Philippines just this March, but it all started way back in 2005 when Johnny Andrean, an Indonesian entrepreneur, encountered the doughnut when he went to the U.S. We all know how popular doughnuts are for the Americans—the semantics of doughnuts and how it is an alltime favorite snack of policemen, children, and even Homer Simpson as the media gives its semiotics. After getting into the whim, he decided to bring it to his home country—bring something iconic—back to Indonesia. What inspired J.Co is mainly his home country; he incorporated some flavors from Indonesia to the traditional Western food to fit their palettes, thus making J.Co different than the others. here is one certain thing I have in common with the sweet-faced, elegant, 44-year-old blonde actress that graces our guilty Thursday-night viewing pleasure—she also used to breastfeed her baby even when he was then 2 years old. Some of you might be saying your OMG’s, since it is not common practice to prolong nursing—but it gets difficult to detach when you see your child is not ready to wean. Meeting Kelly in person shows you the kind of dedicated mother she is to her strikingly handsome son, Hermés Gustaf Daniel Giersch. Whenever he says to his nanny that, “I wanna go to Mama,” he confidently marches straight on to Kelly because he knows she will immediately tend to him. It was unfortunate that on the day of the shoot he was getting over a cold and was not up to changing clothes, and fell asleep for most of the morning—only to be awakened by the sound of the doorbell (our guy is a light sleeper so we tiptoed).

lthough Kelly has undergone divorce proceedings from her husband (and the father of both her children), businessman Daniel Giersch (this, added to going through the motions of her second pregnancy), Kelly arrives at the location looking fresh and classy as her fascinating matriarch character, Lily van der Woodsen would, in the mega-hit TV show, “Gossip Girl.” Showing up in a striped shirt, jeans, and a camel Hermes coat (no surprise there), you couldn’t tell then that she’s with child. She jokes though that once she starts to show, she‘ll be hiding behind fruit bowls and larger purses when they shoot her scenes. bcmag.ph

The call time was 8 AM in Beverly Hills, yet Kelly has already made some purchases at Urth Café, including one fresh OJ (as she has taken to an organic lifestyle) for her little blue-eyed god. A surprise guest turned up in the “person” of her other boy, Oliver, the family’s beloved and huggable pooch, who is so well-behaved you won’t even know he’s in the room. On the last shot of the day—thanks to an all-time fave Handy Manny book reading—the aforementioned slumber disruption was forgotten. And in a little garden surrounded by trees, with stuffed animals poised on patio chairs listening in, Hermes shows us captivating grins as he is rained with hugs and kisses from his doting mom.

BC: Was motherhood something you always wanted? KELLY: Yes. BC: Did being the eldest in the family somewhat prepare you to be a mother? K: Yes. I took over immediately when my brother was born,

a bunch of names. At my baby shower, we wanted to come up with a name that was very strong and had some sort of meaning. Hermes is the Greek messenger god—he’s equal to Mercury—and we figured the world could use a few more of those (Smiles). And also, my friend jokes that he’s gonna grow up wondering why his name is on all the boxes in my house, ha ha, because I love the store…

BC: Is your career taking a backseat now that you’re pregnant? K: I’m still working on “Gossip Girl,” but the lovely thing is

I wait until he’s occupied, and then I change his clothes and do whatever, and he seems happy with that (Laughs).

out things. He likes fashion, he likes things already. He knows the colors that he likes.

BC: What kind of clothes does Hermes look best in? K: Lately he’s been wearing a lot of skinny jeans.

We have cute Tretorn tennis shoes, and different kinds of sweaters. I love those V-Neck little gray cashmere sweaters with a nice polo shirt. We try not to have any of those pictures where he looks so goofy that he looks back at us and says, “I hate you for putting me in that outfit.” I want him to look back and say, “Oh my God, I looked great. I looked so cool at two years old!” Ha ha!

BC: As a mom, how similar or different are you from your character, Lily van der Woodsen?

K: I think Lily van der Woodsen has definitely been doing this a lot longer than I have. I mean, she has grown kids, so she has a certain wisdom in the way [her character’s] written that I really admire. I love that she’s not afraid to say, “I’m sorry” to her kids if she messes up. We’re both very dedicated mothers, but I think she’s very different. She lives in the Upper East Side, she has an unlimited budget, her kids are a little older…For me it’s very simple. I’m much more of a hands-on mother, on a day-to-day basis. BC: Who do you see, or want, Hermes growing up like: Nate, Chuck or Dan? K: Dan. Because I think he’s smart…he has good values.

He obviously has good taste in women, as he’s dating my daughter! BC: At what age will you allow your kids to watch DVD copies of you in the show? K: You know, by the time they’re old enough to watch, they’re

going to be like, “Mom, what’s ‘Gossip Girl?’” You know what I mean? (Laughs) I don’t know…It’s sort of like they’re going to say, “Who are the Beatles? Oh yeah, that was that band you liked when I was growing up.” BC: We heard you’re a big star in Turkey, because of the show, “Generations.” Any plans of going back? K: Yeah! I went there a while ago and I loved it! It’s

such a beautiful country. I would love to go back when Hermes is at an age where he can really experience it. BC: How do you relax, especially with being so busy doing a hit TV show? K: We take long walks. For me, what’s relaxing is

going to the play center with my son and watching him, or going to the park and being outside. It’s fun to see him play with other kids. That’s such a great joy to me. And sometimes, I have time to have someone over to get a massage, or try to get to a yoga class. It doesn’t always happen, but I try. Being with Hermes is very relaxing to me, and sometimes, even just being on the set. It used to be boring to be in my trailer, but now it’s okay to have a little time for myself, too.

BC: How is Hermes taking to a bicoastal lifestyle? K: He does well. We just keep his schedule pretty

much the same wherever we are. We spend a lot of time in New York. He goes to Kidville, he goes to the park. He has his regular things he loves to do in New York, and then when we’re in L.A., he has regular things he loves to do. So he has friends in New York that he likes to play with, and then here he has his friends, so I think it’s kind of fun for him. We don’t travel back and forth that much. Now that I’m pregnant, I’m not doing it all the time.

BC: How is he on set? K: He’s great on set. There’s

so much to see. He loves the makeup and hair trailer. He’s always blow-drying everyone’s hair. There’s the little forklift that they use to build the sets—he loves to check that out. And all the trucks and brooms—he loves to sweep. There’s so much that he loves to play with.

BC: How would you like your kids to always think of you? K: I would just like them to always think of me

(Laughs). Also, as someone they can always talk to. I remember talking to Hermes when he was just a baby, and I would hold him and I’d say, “I’m always here for you. You can always tell me everything, whatever you need.” I think it’s important for him to know that—that he’ll never be judged—that I’m here, and present. My mother has always been that way with me, growing up. bc

KARIZ TANYA FAVIS What was it like growing up with your mother, and what were the most important lessons you learned from her?

My single mom brought me up, and she and I lived with my grandparents and her siblings for a big part of my childhood. I don’t recall meeting my dad until I was about 10, or so. There was a period in my life where my family was having a hard time making ends meet, having food on the table, commuting everywhere we went— that type of formative years. Oddly

and fortuitously, my mom—who is a teacher—always made sure that I went to a good school despite our hardships. I think she believed that it was the key to success, and to some extent, it is. I made some of the best and longest friendships of my life in the schools I went to, and even met my husband there. It was not until I had a stepdad that things became better for us, financially. They did not marry, although when I was 13, my little sister was born—and she became the light of our lives. Indirectly, what my mom taught me is to make sure that my family is

intact, because the sadness of a broken home and the trials that come with it are memories that you bring throughout your life. I think I’m still healing from some of that, and I am able to forget because of the love of my husband, children, and dogs. I hope my kids don’t go through that, so I learned to be a hardworker, and to never give up on your dreams while you are alive, especially if you have little ones counting on and looking up to you. What were your biggest dreams as a young girl?

I wanted to be a scientist, astronaut, or pilot. The last thing I wanted to be was a writer—which I kept telling my mom I would never become—and it’s funny because, look at what I do for a living now. Can you tell us more about your love story with your husband?

Tom (AKA Martin) and I met in college, and it is a pretty typical “love story”—but what I’m proud of is that it

to escape when we fight. Other couples have the solace of separate offices when they’re arguing, that certainly does not hold true for us. Congratulations on giving birth to a healthy, adorable baby boy! How does it feel to be raising one? What are you looking forward to the most as he grows up?

Thank you very much! We are all completely, head-over-heels in-love with Mathis. First off, I am a nervous wreck when it comes to my loves, regardless of their gender, so it feels the same. It’s too early to tell the difference be-

tween raising them though, since he’s still so tiny at just 3 months. I am excited to see all of them grow up, and like I mentioned in a recent interview, I have little expectations, but high hopes for my babies. How has this pregnancy differed from the first two, and what are the most important things you’ve learned?

That when you grow older, your body doesn’t function as well as it used to! I was more nauseous and tired this time around, but still wouldn’t trade a moment of it. I also ate better, went for more organic foods, so I didn’t gain as

much weight as the first two. Any funny or embarrassing moments with Mathis so far?

I’ve gotten spray-peed on a few times, which always elicits shrieks from me that shock him—thankfully it’s just in the confines of our home. I’ve also forgotten several times to don my breast pads, and have had some “outflow” problems during meetings, but that’s not Mathis’ doing at all. How have your daughters reacted to being big sisters to a baby boy?

him, or kiss and hug him more. Needless to say, they are taking to him excellently. He is a huge blessing to our brood, and one that we didn’t even expect—which is the best surprise from God. Aside from your own family, what inspires you to curate the “best choices” for your readers?

What’s your secret to balancing a good family life with the job of being the editor of several magazine titles?

Having a great team behind me, and the full support of my husband. You need that “wind beneath your wing,” and I’d like to think I am the same for him.

The satisfaction of being able to deliver content that is fresh, fun, and most of all, useful is what drives me to continue providing readers with the best choices for their families. It’s not an easy task, considering especially that we are in Manila, but having BC US is a major advantage.

If there’s one advice you’d like to give career-driven mothers, what would it be?

One? Hmmm…it would be: Don’t be too hard on yourself. We cannot be perfect at all times, and you have to accept that there are things that will take a backseat when you are trying to run a household and career at the same time. Just pray, internalize, and think about what your priorities are at this moment in time. I’ll add a second suggestion: Don’t beat yourself up on your mistakes, just learn from them.

What is the biggest accomplishment in your career so far as an editor?

Being able to co-found BC Magazine US, and that it is already on its 7th year of publishing in the States, and how it has been respected and is arguably the number 1 family fashion and lifestyle magazine there. I’ve also had the good fortune of working with some of the industry’s best and most respected—like Kimora Lee Simmons, Kelly Rutherford, Diddy, Chris Cornell, Kourtney Kardashian, Nia Vardalos, Martin Sheen, Tori Spelling, Scott Baio and more—both abroad and in the Philippines as well. I also consider it an accomplishment when I am able to train other people, and they become better in all aspects. My career as an editor has also allowed me to live in the most famous zip code in the world for a few years—90210—and that, in itself, is surreal.

I met him thru my best friend, who had other friends who were friends of his. One time, they went night swimming and my best friend took me and introduced me to them. Since I lived in Moonwalk and he was from BF Resort which are both in Las Piñas, we were the last two left with my best friend. I often join Facebook contests—it’s one of the things that I usually do. (Laughs) The BC Playdate Cover Contest was very interesting because I’d be on the cover of the magazine together with BC Magazine’s owners. So sabi ko, wow! Another thing is the prizes—that’s a big thing because I get so busy sometimes, napapabayaan ko na sarili ko. I thought I needed to pamper myself. I didn’t expect to win, but to be on the cover—iba yung feeling! Feeling ko, sikat na sikat ako! (Laughs) What did you think about the experience? How does it feel to have won?

He’s a soldier. I grew up with my grandmother, and my aunts and uncles helped bring us up ng maayos na magkakapatid—to become good, and God-fearing. Even if we were a broken family, we still had respect for each other and for our parents. We didn’t blame our parents for what happened, even if they weren’t present to provide us with lessons, there were people who were there to guide us. I would always think that there are reasons for everything that happened, ang malaking pinasasalamat ko is that even if they were not there, my other family members were, especially my lola, who guided and taught me what’s good for me. I had a really enjoyable day. I loved it. The staff, makeup artist, and of course Tom and Tanya, were all so friendly. Everyone was really nice and very professional, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. I was really happy with how I looked when they had finished. I feel so blessed. Di ko makakalimutan sa buong buhay ko yung experience--first time nangyari sa buhay ko yung shoot na iyon, and na-meet ko pa yung owners ng magazine at nakasama ko pa siya sa shoot. They were all so nice, even the staff, even if my kids are so makulit, super enjoy pa rin. Of course, my hubby is super happy even if he isn’t part of the shoot, because we were able to experience that kind of thing. Beauty evokes a sense of joy, hope, serenity, pleasure, and, as the book title says, an unbearable lightness of being. For Malou Araneta Romero, life has been a continuous love affair with beauty. Once employed as a living, breathing representation of it, this still-stunning former model now creates precious works of art for the accessorizing pleasure of modern, empowered women. No stranger to fashion, Malou has been an icon of beauty since following in her sister’s footsteps and becoming a commercial model. “I first got into modeling because my sister was a model,” Malou tells us. “She would also always bring me to her modeling events, that is why at a very young age, I was already exposed to it.” Knowing fully well that her time on the runways and in front of the camera would not last forever, Malou bebcmag.ph

While enrolled at the Philippine School of Interior Design, she began to dabble in designing jewelry, which she initially marketed to family and friends. When asked what compelled her to embark on this venture when she was actually pursuing interior design studies, Malou revealed that she had always been inclined towards creative and artistic output. “Even [when] I was just a kid, I always liked to create things,” she confesses. “I’ve always been appreciative of art, but it wasn’t ‘til I was older that I actively participated in the creation of it. When I took interior design, that’s when I gained an understanding of how structure and composition came together. I would buy jewelry from other countries whenever I’d travel. Then I tried designing [a] few pieces and my friends would always ask me about them. Then I made a collection and it [was] received well by my friends.” NOVEMBER 2012 philippines

And so from that simple hobby-cumside business, Malou’s unique creations evolved into a full-time enterprise under the label Joanique. Coined from the names of her children, Joaquin and Monique, the brand has been Malou’s newest baby, since it was first launched a little over 2 years ago. Although she is first and foremost its designer, Malou says she is involved in all aspects of the business, from concept, production, to distribution. “I am very hands on with what I do now,” she admits. “I design my pieces, oversee the manufacturing, and I give them the direction for each collection.” She goes on to share her inspirations when coming up with her designs, and gives us an idea of the kind of women she sees wearing them. “I think every artist is driven by a specific passion, which in turn guides the creation of every piece of jewelry that he or she creates,” Malou explains. “This is what differentiates one jewelry designer from the next. Different things and experiences can inspire

me in creating my pieces. It could be from travel, an art piece, movies, or even nature. It also depends on my mood. My pieces are very versatile. My clients can be from early 20s and above—from simple women who just want [to] wear one kind of jewelry, to women who are very bold in style, and those who wear simple clothes and let their accessory be the statement. I believe the unique touch comes from my desire to ensure that earrings aren’t just earrings, and rings aren’t just rings. After all is said and done, what I truly want is to give women an experience of beauty through the experience of jewelry.” Of course, it helps that Joanique’s driving force comes well-equipped with years of experience and her own impeccable fashion sense. “Because I was exposed at an early stage in the industry, I had friends that helped and guided [me on] which direction to take,” Malou offers. “And [it] also helped to know the next trends in fashion.” Yet running Joanique is but one facet of this ultra-stylish lady. She

is as much a wife and mother, as she is the head of her own business. Married to architect Nathaniel “Nikki” L. Romero for the past 8 years, she and her equally busy hubby have had to master a different form of art—that of juggling their respective careers with managing their family. “Knowing how to balance your time is very important especially when you’re running a business and being a wife/ mother at the same time,” Malou notes. “I make it a point that when I get home from work, it’s really just about my family. I also try as much as I can to cook for my family at least once a week. It’s special for my family when they know that I’m cooking. My kids sometimes help me in the kitchen, which I think is nice to see.” She and Nikki also tell us their family never fails to come together for movie night. “We love watching DVDs,” Malou reveals. “We always have DVD nights with our kids.” Nikki adds, “We get our favorite movie at the store, and then we watch it all together in one

ing there as a model at the time, and Nikki was on vacation with his family. He tried to “pick her up” by asking for directions on the street, thinking that she was a local. It was to his surprise that Malou was Filipino, like himself, and the rest as they say, is history. Apart from the couple’s shared love of gastronomic adventures, the Romeros also enjoy watching and supporting their kids’ activities and performances at school. “What inspires me, motivates me is when they’re at school and we get invited when they perform, that’s the best time—the pageants, like for Linggo ng Wika, I think that’s our favorite,” Nikki reveals. “That’s my favorite daddy duty. I bring my video camera, you can see my smile and then it’s just very thrilling, and it’s like an achievement for me—very honored when I see my kids perform in school. It’s funny because sometimes, we don’t know that the parents are not invited, but we’re still there to watch them,” he adds laughing.

room. And right now, it’s good that on our last anniversary, my wife gave me a 3D TV upstairs in the master’s, so we watch 3D movies there already. But sometimes, we don’t get to choose because the kids usually choose what they want,” he says laughing. “We sometimes have [a] picnic in our garden—my kids love that,” Malou pipes in. “We usually go malling with the kids twice a week,” Nikki quips. “We make it a point to go out of town at least once every two weeks—overnight or three days. Sometimes we go to Tagaytay, Baguio, Subic. We love the waters. The kids like to go swimming. Both of them know how to swim, even when they were about two

years old—both of them. They love the beach. That’s our bonding time.” As for some private R&R for just the two of them, Nikki and Malou say the pleasure of sampling new culinary fare is the way to go. “Once a week, my hubby and I go on a date night,” Malou shares. “He likes to eat out and he always checks new restaurants and he doesn’t tell me where we will go. He likes to surprise me a lot. Even when we travel, that’s his favorite thing to do. He researches on the best restaurant in town and we’d eat there.” Speaking of travel, it was one trip in Singapore when the couple met. Malou tells our editor that she was work-

In that way, we can also know, and we would know how to diversify our knowledge. During this time, it was short-lived. It was bought again by the Angs that time, so we weren’t able to continue operation—but when we talk on our own, we are eager and aggressive. I think we’re looking to one newspaper publication already that we might venture in soon.” Nikki also remarks about his stepfather, Eddie Garcia, “Tito Ed has been with us for almost 25 years. The relationship with him is more of a barkada.” When asked if he’s as groovy as he seems on camera, Nikki says, “Actually, no. When we’re talking about life and things, Tito Ed is more of the serious type. My dad is also like our barkada. But what’s funny is sometimes, Tito Ed, out of the blue, he gives us really unique jokes, or his [lines] in the films that would make you fall off your chair.” We asked Nikki what it’s like working alongside his dad and brother, Mikee, in the family business. “My father wanted us to be independent,” Nikki tells us. “He wanted us to focus on our strengths. My brother is handling the port businesses and mining, because he’s more into finance—that’s his expertise. Meanwhile, as an architect, I’m focused on the real estate development. I do the actual planning and project management, from the construction to the sales. Our working relationship with my father is very close, meaning to say, whenever we need

advice from him, of course, from time to time we go to him and seek more experienced advice. He’s always there. My dad doesn’t really want to interfere with our decisions, until we ask for his advice. It’s up to us to strategize, because that’s also what we’ve learned from him. When you commit mistakes in life, you have to learn from them, and to get back on your feet on your own also. He started from scratch. My father started as a medical representative, and then he got promoted—that was his first job—to being number one in sales in one pharmaceutical company during that time. So, after that, he worked as a liaison of a construction company, until he acquired that company, and then he put up his own, and he became “successful.” From time to time, every month or probably weekly, we go out for dinner, just the three of us and we talk about the busi-

nesses that we are running right now. And then sometimes we brainstorm, forecast, and anticipate the future businesses that are prospering in the country.” Nikki also stresses their father’s insistence on the concepts of debt of gratitude and valuing one’s roots. “My father taught us how to keep our feet on the ground,” he says. “That’s what he always tells not only us, but also our children. Like whatever you achieve in life, may it be success or any goal that you have achieved, you should always look back at the people who helped you achieve it. That’s what he taught—camaraderie with other people, especially the masses. Actually, that’s his common advocacy—to help people who are in need. Those are the values that we’ve learned from my dad. Right now, my father has a bcmag.ph

Romeros foundation [in] which the family is active in. That’s helping the people from Pampanga. His roots are really [in] Angeles, Pampanga. So we help the people from Pampanga—those who can’t afford to go to school, we provide help through scholarship foundations and educational funds for grade school, high school, to college. So that’s what we learned from my father—to be simple, to value one’s roots, and at the same time to help people who are in need.” Helping those in need, including an entire nation desperate for a makeover, is exactly what their family took on when they won the right to reclaim and develop Smokey Mountain. “This is the most controversial project of my father,” Nikki says candidly. “This was the time of the late former president, Cory Aquino. She awarded this project to my father. Actually, he mentioned this to me, since I was still young that time. So, he was telling us the story—this was supposed to eradicate or erase the stigma of the Philippines. Because during that time, the stigma of the Philippines was Smokey Mountain. The trash in Manila—the capital of the Philippines—but Smokey Mountain is there. The challenge to him was to remove the trash. Actually, our business is not into waste and garbage, it is housing. He went there to check on the [people around] Smokey Mountain, who lived in the squatter areas. So he said, what if I do a project that would eradicate the squatters, put them in a resettlement area, and make them more productive there? Meanwhile, the trash will also be removed. So, during that time, when it was bid out to other contractors, no one wanted to get it because it was trash. So, my dad said, might as well try it, so he was able to get the project and then eventually, from a really, really big mountain, it’s now a small mountain, considering the Clean Air Act, [which] states that you cannot do incineration like [in] other countries, such as Tokyo, [and] Paris. Anyway, we abided by the Clean Air Act, so right now, the trash is still being eliminated. bcmag.ph

Eventually, it became controversial because of the many presidents that inherited it. From all the presidents until now, it still hasn’t been removed. I think from 100 percent, the trash is down to 20 percent. “So we’re very positive that [with] this government, [the trash] will become zero soon and then not only that, but also the informal settlers who are living in that area can have their own decent homes. Talking to Nikki about his father’s legacy of helping the needy, and taking on even the most daunting of challenges for the sake of improving the country while uplifting the lives of the impoverished, it becomes evident that he and his wife share an appreciation

for how aesthetics can bring about positive change in people. For Malou, designing her line of one-of-a-kind accessories comes with her personal vision of giving the wearer an experience of beauty through her creations. For Nikki, his eye for architectural design has given rise to both industrial structures as well as reasonably priced habitats for the modern Filipino. No less than their own breath-taking home stands as a testament to their combined passion for all things artistic and beautiful. According to Nikki, it is a collaborative labor of love between him and Malou. “When we got married 8 years ago, we acquired this property,” he recalls. “It was an old house. “What inspires me, motivates me is when they’re at school and we get invited when they perform, that’s the best time—the pageants, like for Linggo ng Wika, that’s our favorite. That’s my favorite daddy duty.” I worked together with my wife—she used to be an interior designer, I am an architect. It’s better. After 2 years, it was constructed, so we transferred here three years after we got married. Meaning to say, this is really what got us into fights,” he admits, laughing. “What color, that type of thing—it was an exciting experience for both of us to really come up with like, the best for the house. So, we designed it and we chose the paintings and the furniture. We really enjoyed that time.” “Enjoyed, but argued,” we tease him. “Yes, argued...” he trails off, breaking into more laughter, before eventually finishing with, “But at the end of the day, of course the wife wins,” to which we all crack up and congratulate him

on his wisdom. Currently, Nikki is exploring the world of collecting various works of art to further enhance their already exquisite abode. “I started collecting paintings recently. Right now, I’m starting to collect paintings of Arturo Luz. So those are my favorite pieces in the house. If I come across some money, I try to get paintings that I want by Arturo Luz. Little by little at least, those are I think investments also that I can give to my children.” We mention the unmistakable green glass pieces by Ramon Orlina we spied on one end of the formal dining room. “Correct, that’s an Orlina,” Nikki agrees. “I’m trying to start collecting

those artworks, like Orlinas. It’s kind of expensive, so just little by little. I just am now learning, but my brother really collects paintings. He has a massive collection. I’m learning from him what to collect, what not to, or what paintings would appreciate. At least, I’m trying to learn.” For her part, Malou is the picture of contentment with her beautiful family, lovely home, and her pet project Joanique. But when it comes to homemaking, Malou whips up quite a storm in the kitchen. She says, “I love to learn and discover new things. For me, the best way to learn is through experience. I would say my daughter is feistier, I guess it’s because of what happened to her when she was a baby—she was born premature. She really was a fighter since birth. My son is calm and understanding.” When it comes to her other “baby,” Joanique, however, she says, “As of now, I [am] very happy and contented with what I have and with what I am bcmag.ph

doing. I don’t what to do a lot of things and not give my 100 percent. I’d rather focus on what I do know and try to the best that I can.” We ask her what else she has planned for her label. “My vision for my brand is not just to gain attention to our local market but to also capture the global market as well.” With her focus and attention to detail, we’ve no doubt Joanique will make its mark here and abroad, in much the same way Malou did both in the local and international scenes during her days as a model. bc

Britney Spears is making a huge comeback to her boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James (and TV, too)

lthough most of her fans claim that now is Britney’s comeback as one of the new judges of X Factor USA Season 2, the pop icon also seems intent in making up for lost time with her boys, even after purportedly agreeing to give ex-husband Kevin Federline legal and physical custody of both Sean and Jayden in July 2008. Spears is reported to be more hands-on as a mom, throwing a double birthday bash for her darlings, and as she is seen here, picking them up from their primary school in California. Despite a wedding with her fiancé Jason Trawick in the works, Britney looks as if she puts her kids first and takes the time to go on a vacation with them in their hometown, Louisiana. We all know that parenting is a series of hits and misses, so from the lady who once said in a Dateline interview that, “Right now, my baby is my religion”—we are hopeful that Ms. Spears is sticking to that credo stronger this time around. bc
