SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE BACK INTO EDUCATION

TO TURNING POINTS AT BURNLEY COLLEGE Welcome

The Turning Points programme at Burnley College is dedicated to offering individualised and supportive alternative provision to Year 10 and 11 pupils who have disengaged with school for a multitude of reasons.

Our specialist, approachable Tutors are passionate about Turning Points and all embrace the Burnley College ethos of Building Futures, Changing Lives for those learners on the programme.

Their mission is to re-engage with learners by providing them with access to an innovative, new curriculum and exciting, inspirational learning environment, while offering them individualised support to suit their needs, educational and personal.

Our team understands that the transition from mainstream education to College may be daunting for some pupils and potentially challenging: this is why we provide a supportive induction for every learner to ease any concerns and give them the confidence to thrive in this new environment.

Students are empowered to take control of their own learning; motivated to achieve their goals and supported to reach their full potential.

“I joined Turning Points after struggling to find my place within mainstream education, and it gave me the confidence to focus on my learning and myself. I improved academically and gained the skills I needed to achieve my career goals! Turning Points turned my life around for the better and I’ll be forever grateful to the amazing team and Tutors who helped me along the way.”

THE TURNINGoffer POINTS

Our Turning Points programme provides learners with a variety of opportunities, support and guidance to help them grow in confidence, find their place in society and achieve their full potential. Our focus is on ensuring the constant growth and development of learners, both academically and personally.

Turning Points gives students the opportunity to:

• Learn in a mature, calm and secure environment

• Embark on their GCSE and/or functional skills in Maths and English at a level that suits their abilities

• Attend personal development sessions to ensure their constant development and growth

• Join regular tutorials with our expert Tutors, both in group sessions and on a 1-1 basis, providing them with targeted outcomes to empower them to continually improve

• Take part in a huge variety of extra-curricular activities to broaden their horizons and experiences, from sports to gaming

• Access individualised advice and guidance about their career pathways and next steps.

On an academic level, we are dedicated to providing learners with the opportunity to discover new subjects and find a passion for new skills and knowledge. We have a variety of vocational courses available for Turning Points learners while they are working towards vital qualifications in Maths and English, to reengage them into learning and excite them in a way that mainstream education may have been unable to.

Yr11 Vocational pathways include:

• Business

• Child Development

• Construction (Brickwork, Painting & Decorating, Carpentry & Joinery and Plastering – or a carousel of these).

• Creative Arts & Media

• Engineering

• Health & Social Care

• Sport

Support FOR SCHOOLS

“Our Student entered the Turning Points programme with a history of multiple fixed-term exclusions and a placement at a Pupil Referral Unit. They were an incredibly able student, but their emotional needs and a diagnosis of ADHD presented as a barrier to their learning and success in mainstream education.

“They have now left the Turning Points Programme at the end of Year 11 with an Ascentis Level 3 Qualification in brickwork, and a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification in both Maths and English, to now pursue an apprenticeship in Civil Engineering! This outcome would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the Turning Points team.”

Teacher

“It is hard to describe the huge difference that Turning Points has made for some of our students, it has truly been life changing for them. They have accomplished exceptional results and successes, that may not have been possible if they’d stayed in a mainstream nonvocational setting.”

Teacher

At Turning Points, we maintain positive, effective connections with the schools of Turning Points learners at every stage of their journey.

• Information on bespoke programmes which are tailored to individual Turning Points learners’ needs to support their development.

Support FOR SCHOOLS

The Burnley College Turning Points team will provide support and guidance to help your child achieve academically and also grow personally, keeping you informed every step of the way and valuing your role as parent/guardian.

We build a strong relationship with you and encourage regular communication to ensure the bespoke programme developed for your child suits their current – and futureneeds and encourages their development.

We update parents/carers of their young person’s achievements, so you can be reassured of their progress and celebrate their successes at home as well.

Should there be any areas of concern, we will contact you immediately to work together to find a way forward.

To ensure Turning Points is right for your young person, we offer interviews ahead of their induction where you can ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the programme. We also offer two parents’ evenings each academic year where you can meet the Turning Points team and hear directly from your Tutors about your young person’s development at College.

SCHOOL LINKS

Group of schools come into College 1 day per week with up to 6 students supported by school staff. This offer currently includes Upholstery Workshop experience and Multi Skills Development.

“As a parent involved with the Turning Points Programme, I can confidently say, finding this provision was the best move I could have made for my child. The team have been so supportive, and the Tutors have been instrumental in my child’s progression, both academically and personally. The staff have provided my child with incredible opportunities and guidance that has resulted in them achieving more than they ever thought possible. My child is thriving and happy, and that couldn’t have happened without Turning Points.”
