Entre les primeres imatges de viatges que ens han arribat hi trobem esbossos i pintures d’artistes, mariners i viatgers que anotaven les seves observacions. Sempre m’han fascinat aquests testimonis que, a través de la mirada de l’autor, ens permeten descobrir, segles més tard, l’emoció que aquest sentia davant del que li era desconegut. A mesura que s’anaven dibuixant, aquelles terres llunyanes esdevenien més familiars per a qui no les havia vist mai. El dibuix té la gran virtut d’explicar el que delinea. Traslladar la realitat al paper ens obliga a entendre el que veiem. La il·lustració és un llenguatge universal, una eina de comunicació excepcional. L’sketcher català Gabi Campanario, il·lustrador i periodista del The Seattle Times i fundador l’any 2007 del moviment Urban Sketchers (www. urbansketchers.org), n’era molt conscient quan va decidir obrir un blog col·lectiu que mostrés el món dibuix a dibuix. Vaig tenir l’honor de figurar entre els trenta primers corresponsals, repartits pels cinc continents, que va tenir aquest blog. Jo feia un any i mig que vivia a Barcelona i sovint dibuixava a les meves llibretes. Sense saber massa bé per on començar, l’1 de novembre de 2008 vaig penjar un primer dibuix. Era la façana de la Casa Batlló. Un dia després, ja hi havia trenta dibuixos d’artistes del món sencer: la peripècia havia començat. Dotze anys més tard, hi ha milers de dibuixants repartits en grups locals. Entre els més dinàmics hi tenim els Urban Sketchers de Portugal, Hong Kong, Singapur, Chicago… i Barcelona. Els sketchers barcelonins destaquen mundialment per diverses raons. Probablement, hi tenen a veure els orígens de Gabi Campanario que, tot i acabar instal·lat a Seattle, va néixer i va créixer a l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. I també, el fet que Barcelona resulti molt inspiradora per als artistes, ja sigui per la

Urban Sketchers: the New Explorers The first travel images to reach us include the sketches and paintings by artists, sailors and travellers who recorded their observations. I’ve always been fascinated by these accounts that, centuries later and through the perspective of their authors, allow us to discover the emotion they felt at the time when contemplating the unknown. As they were being drawn, these distant lands became more familiar to all those who had never seen them. The sketch has the formidable virtue of explaining what it outlines. Putting reality on paper makes us understand what we are seeing. Illustration is a universal language, an outstanding tool of communication. Catalan sketcher Gabi Campanario, illustrator and journalist on The Seattle Times and founder of the Urban Sketchers movement (www.urbansketchers. org) in 2007, was fully aware of this when he decided to start a group blog to show the world sketch by sketch. I had the honour of being among the first thirty correspondents on this blog, spread across the five continents. I had been living in Barcelona for eighteen months and often drawing in my notebooks. With no clear idea of where to begin, I posted my first sketch on 1 November 2008. It was the façade of Casa Batlló. Within a day, there were thirty sketches by artists from all over the world: the journey had begun. Twelve years later, there are thousands of sketchers, divided into local groups. The most dynamic include the Urban Sketchers of Portugal, Hong Kong, Singapore, Chicago… and Barcelona. There are several reasons why the sketchers of Barcelona stand out internationally. It’s probably partly to do with the origins of Gabi Campanario, who was born and grew up in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat although he finally settled in Seattle. Or the fact that Barcelona is a great source of

Però, sens dubte, Urban Sketchers Barcelona també li deu molt a la iniciativa de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona, que ha donat a conèixer i ha celebrat cada un dels seus barris a través de Carnet de voyage, una col·lecció única que reuneix més de trenta títols o llibretes de viatge, dibuixades a peu de carrer per sketchers de la ciutat.
