t’s funny that before school even lets out, we are busy thinking about Back to School. Now with less than a month to go, crunch time is upon us. What are we going to do in September? Which activities should our children try out this year? Would they like acting? Singing? Dancing? Art? Have a look at our Fall Activity Guide to give you some ideas about the programs available. If you are contemplating having home learners, then Homeschooling 101 will help you with the process. In this issue you can also find out more about when to visit the orthodontist. We all know when to get our kids their shots and take them to the dentist, but when to the orthodontist? Bracing Yourself For Braces helps shed some light on the process so you can catch any problems early on and be ready when and if the news comes that braces are in your future. It’s Time! Teaching Kids Time Management Skills By Christa Melnyk Hines

“

W

hat are you doing?!� I say to my son. “I told you five minutes ago to get dressed. We are leaving for your baseball game!� Even in my apparent state of frustration, my 6-year-old refuses to be rushed along as he reluctantly tosses his toy plane onto the floor and slowly begins pulling one sock on, and then another. His inner clock shows no urgency. And no amount of lecturing about dilly-dallying is going to expedite my dawdler. So begins another frantic dash out the door. Although some of us may be inclined to consider punctuality, or the lack there-of, as a personality trait, experts say that time management is a skill that can be taught and is just as important to academic and long-term success as learning the three Rs. “Time management skills for children are linked to ‘school survival skills’ when mastered young and become ingrained habits for later in life,� says Dr. Stephanie Mihalas, a nationally certified school psychologist and clinical instructor, department of Psy chiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA. “Starting too young is never too early!� Time management includes executive functioning skills like organization and planning, reviewing work for quality and accuracy and staying focused. Here are some ideas to get your family started: Schedule weekly family meetings. Use Sunday evenings to discuss the family’s upcoming schedule. Give each child her own calendar that she can fill out. Hang up a master schedule with each person’s activities in a different color of ink. Use a timer. Build awareness about how

long it takes to complete a task. Ask your child to estimate how much time he needs to finish his math assignment and then time him. With practice, he’ll start to realize how long each task actually takes. “A great tool is TimeTimer (http://www. timetimer.com) which is like a kitchen timer (either a stand alone tool or an app) that shows time in stopwatch fashion with the time remaining in red,� says Cindy Sullivan, a productivity, time management and professional organization expert. “As the red shrinks you are getting closer to the end

time. It works great with homework or when doing a ‘beat the clock’ to tidy up or work on other tasks.� Timers can also work well to keep parents on track, says Dr. Jane Sosland, clinical assistant professor, department of Behavioral Pediatrics, University of Kansas Medical Center. “A lot of times we’ll say, ‘I need you to brush your teeth. I’ll be back in five minutes.’ Then we get busy with other children,� Sosland says. Use your microwave or your phone timer Continued on page 6

to help remind you when it’s time to check on your child. Create a chunked to-do schedule.

Divide the day into chunks of time on a dry erase board or laminate a task list. For example, the morning routine might say: Get dressed, make bed, eat breakfast and brush teeth. Your child can check off the tasks as she completes them. Offer incentives. “The more checks can be linked to a natural reward like time with the family, helping to create the meal for the evening or play time with friends,â€? Mihalas says. Fewer checks results in natural consequences like less time to play with friends or watch a favorite TV program before school. Use visuals. For children who aren’t reading yet, photographs or pictures can help cue them. “I helped my son take responsibility for his morning routine as a kindergartner by drawing pictures on post-it notes of school clothes, eating breakfast, driving to school and stuck them on an analog clock,â€? says mom of two, Sherlyn Pang Luedtke, author of The Mommy Advantage. Luedtke says that the day her son was still sitting in his pajamas when it was time to go, she calmly put him in the car with his clothes and shoes next to him. “He got dressed while the car was in the driveway with the engine running,â€? she says. If at ďŹ rst you don’t succeed, keep trying. Changing old habits can take at least a month, and kids don’t usually share the same sense of urgency as adults do. “If a morning goes poorly, rather than being furious and upset on the way to school, try and problem solve to decide what to do tomorrow so this doesn’t happen again. Maybe that’s waking up a few minutes earlier,â€? Sosland says. Looking for additional resources? A

lthough it’s becoming quite a popular education choice, the decision to homeschool can lead to some overwhelming questions like: How do you get started? What does a typical day look like as you entertain and educate your kids all day long? How do you keep toddlers from emptying the cabinets on a daily basis while you teach your older kids? What about socialization? Aside from registering your child with the BC Ministry of Education by September 30th, the first thing you need to know is that there is no “perfect� or “right� way to homeschool. Teaching methods and supplies are as different as the families actually doing the homeschooling. Homeschooling parents range from super-structured (starting school at the same time every day; teaching solely from workbooks and textbooks; weekly testing) to “unschooling� (child-led learning; using field trips and

outings as real-world experience; not trying to replicate a classroom). There are so many ways to teach, and you’d be surprised at how well most of them work. To get started, some homeschoolers buy an entire packaged curriculum to educate their child. This method works well for parents who are unsure about what needs to be taught or where their child is on the academic spectrum, and these packages usually come with a lesson plan that lays out what needs to be taught each day. It’s also great for those who are sharing the teaching with their spouse, another family member or a babysitter. Curriculum packages come in a variety of choices, including religious, secular, classical, K12, French-centered and more. The choices can be overwhelming, so do some Internet research and join some online groups to discuss what programs others are using and what they think of their packaged curriculum. Even better,

find some local homeschoolers and ask if you can come over to check out their curriculum in person. The homeschoolers referred to as “unschoolersâ€? let their child lead the way (often called “natural learningâ€?). The child, in effect, lets the parent know when he is ready to read, add, write, etc. “Science classâ€? could include field trips to nature centers and zoos, along with walks in the neighborhood simply discovering nature. Grammar is learned not from texts, but from reading books and from real conversations with people of all ages. Similarly, history is learned from stories and historical fiction (or even animated movies‌ think Prince of Egypt). Regular trips to the library play a big part in unschooling. Jessica Mattingly, an unschooler, says, “Our typical day is very similar to what it looked like when the children were younger: there is no typical day! Our schedule is generally determined by our outside commitments (classes, work, co-ops, field trips, etc.) and when we are home we relax and pursue a variety of projects/interests.â€? would you split 5,000 cookies among 1,000 dinosaurs? Those who homeschool eclectically use whatever works for their child at any given time. They pick and choose from the different methods, incorporating lots of playtime and field trips. Tresa Cope says, “Grandparents are great about giving us workbooks for holidays and birthdays, which is great for keeping my costs down. For reading, I just make sure to read to the kids as much as I can while they follow along. The kids help me in the garden for ‘science class’, and I consider grocery shopping teaching them economics! When they’re older I’ll consider a pre-packaged curriculum.� As far as the daily job of homeschooling goes, Suzanne Andrews, mom of four, shares, “There isn’t really a ‘typical’ day! The closest we have is up, breakfast, morning chores, then we’re at the table for school around 9 am. I juggle the “mom’s help needed� subjects so that while I’m listening to a poem or working oral exercises with one the others are working independently. We lunch around noon, the kids help with prep and cleanup, then we only have a little work left after lunch.� So how do these homeschoolers handle the challenge of balancing younger and older children during the teaching day? “While our ‘homeschool’ time is not separated from the rest of our life, balancing the needs of the youngers and olders is a persistent challenge. When my kids ranged in age from 2 to tween, we employed a variety of

strategies. Sometimes one of the kids would play with the baby/toddler while I focused on one or more of the older kids. If we can involve the younger kids in the activity (or a parallel activity), we will do that,� says Jessica Mattingly. Another idea would be to have a special tub of activities just for the younger children for homeschool time. The tub could include blocks, play dough, puppets, coloring books with crayons, lacing cards and snacks. As for socialization, it isn’t usually a concern among homeschoolers. If you want to join a homeschool group, head to the Internet where you can search for groups based on how you homeschool, the ages of your children, where you live, etc. GVHomeLearners.com and BCHEA.ca are great resources to help you connect with a local group. Not every group will be a good fit, so don’t be afraid to move on if you aren’t getting what you need. Other ideas include library programs, day classes, parks and recreation activities, and playdates with school-going kids in the afternoons. As with anything new, when you first start to homeschool you’ll feel a bit unsteady and unsure. Have fun, do what works for you and your children, and keep at it. A new approach to classroom design

B

efore I begin to explain my approach to classroom design, I want you to take a minute to think about the way you sit while working. What leads you to sit this way? Is it a choice or is there a preconceived notion about “the way it should be�? Can you think of a way to be more comfortable? If there were alternative seating areas, would you choose to move? Now that I’ve got you thinking, I’d like to welcome you to the world of flexible seating. Flexible seating is not a new concept to the business world. It has been sweeping through the technology industry and infiltrating corporate offices for years. Even in a traditional workspace, employees can be seen with wiggle cushions, yoga ball chairs, or standing desks. However, when it comes to our children’s workspace, the classroom, progress has been slower.

My story began in September with a traditional classroom design—twenty-four desks arranged nicely in small groups. After accounting for the desks, chairs, and space to move, there was even room for a small reading corner and a group table. It was perfect, or so I thought. In the weeks that followed, I got to know my students. I witnessed their varying abilities, personalities, and learning styles. But what stood out the most was the amount of fidgeting, chatter, mess, and lack of work completion. After countless seating arrangements and classroom management techniques, I was at loss. A colleague suggested I try flexible seating. After a weekend of researching I was sold. With my students input, along with a budget, I put a plan into action. Today, my classroom is anything but ordinary. It has tables with chairs and stools,

kneeling desks, wood stumps, patio furniture, a turf grass carpet, and a plethora of throw pillows. Clipboards allow them to work in nearly any position—seated, standing, or laying on their stomachs. This allows students to move freely around the room to find their best working environment for the given task. Although this may sound like chaos, my students have thrived. At times during working blocks, the classroom is almost silent, broken only by the occasional whisper. I’ve seen a drastic improvement in their work, both in quality and quantity, and they take real pride in insuring their space is clean. The choice and responsibility that my students now own has given them the chance to prove themselves. Their success and constant input into the classroom design continues to inspire me.

Through budget allowance, student choices, and their needs, the room will continue to evolve throughout the year, and hopefully for years to come.

s an orthodontist, I often come across two types of parents: one who assumes their kid’s experience will be the same as theirs and another type of parent who doesn’t have the experience or knowledge they need to get the orthodontic process started. No matter where you stand, I hope to answer your questions and ease your concerns about bracing your kids. treats irregularities in teeth and jaw position. Orthodontists use traditional braces, clear aligners and other appliances to help make teeth move, then use retainers to hold teeth in position. The journey to become an orthodontist starts right after graduation from an accredited dental school. It takes getting into a highly competitive two- to three-year residency program for orthodontists to be ready to twist, push, pull, shift and turn teeth, among other things. It takes years of studying how to carefully orient teeth and jaws to make the mouth look the way it should. We complete school with a unique distinction, and a new mission: that every patient will not only be proud of their smile, but have a smile that is functional and healthy. As orthodontists, we have the know-how and expertise to transform teeth and mouths through a growing number of technologies and innovative orthodontic practices.

It might be due to Hollywood stereotypes, or maybe parents harkening back to their teenage days when their mouths were full of hardware, but children often see an orthodontist much later than we recommend. Both the Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists recommend parents bring their kids to see an orthodontist by age seven—but why age seven? At this age, your child is in a mixed dentition stage, which means they have both baby and adult teeth. Their front adult teeth and first molars will have erupted, establishing a back bite and allowing the orthodontist to identify a possible overbite, underbite or any other issues. Orthodontists that treat patients who are growing also have the ability to take advantage of that growth to affect teeth and jaw positions. Having your kids see an orthodontist at the right time could help identify any problems that may affect your child’s health and function early on. save you time and money. An early orthodontic appointment will give your orthodontist time to spot current and incoming problems for children and allow them to plan appropriately. Once permanent teeth have arrived, or if a patient has passed a certain period of growth, it can potentially take more time to treat a patient. Take your child’s oral care into your own hands and don’t wait for a referral from your dentist, because a referral isn’t needed to see an orthodontist. Seeing an orthodontist should be another childhood first, equivalent to that first haircut or parent-teacher conference. It’s another important first that a lot of parents don’t know they’re missing! Early Oral Problems

Orthodontics make smiles look nice—yes, but the process also has serious health benefits. Crooked or crowded teeth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. That’s because overlapping teeth can be tough to clean. A bad bite can also cause problems when chewing and talking, not to mention too much wear, grinding, and clenching.

A misaligned jaw or teeth can interfere with how your child eats, sleeps and speaks. The discomfort can be draining on anyone, especially kids. Once these issues are identified, your orthodontist will decide the best method for fixing the smile. These are some of the issues we look for in 7-year-old patients: UĂŠ Ă€ÂœĂœ`ˆ˜}. Extraction of some baby or adult teeth can improve or help guide the eruption of adult teeth. UĂŠ"Ă›iĂ€LÂˆĂŒiĂƒĂŠ >˜`ĂŠ Ă•Â˜`iĂ€LÂˆĂŒiĂƒ. Beyond orthodontics’ immediate remedies for mouth health, research shows that it can help with self-perception and quality of life for your child. Orthodontics has come a long way since stainless steel brackets and wires were first introduced in 1927. Many kids are still getting traditional braces as they are still one of the most predictable methods for correcting teeth. Pilgrimage to the Pumpkin Patch Make it an Annual Family Tradition! By Christina Katz

very year, weeks before Halloween, we take a half-day pilgrimage to the pumpkin patch. Our local pumpkin farm is so festive that we usually go twice each season—once as a family and again with friends. Years ago, I was even brave enough to chaperone a field trip with superenthusiastic elementary school students, who could not have been prouder of their pumpkins plucked right out of the patch. Pumpkins are bright globes of cheer against the muted shades and foreboding weather of autumn. And kids, from toddlers to teens, never tire of annual visits to pumpkin farms. While some farms keep things as simple as a roadside patch and pay station, others go all out and create a full harvest festival with animals, rides, bakeries

and shops. No matter how fancy the farm, a visit to the pumpkin patch is good for the soul. It’s an opportunity to slow down and enjoy time in nature, take in the wide-open views and enjoy the crisp fall air in fields dotted with pumpkins in all shapes and sizes. Visit a local pumpkin farm every harvest season so your kids can witness the transformation of seeds planted in late spring into fields overflowing with produce. Supporting locally owned farms feels great and helps connect your family with nature and each other. Here’s how to make the most of each and every trip: Plan Ahead. Check websites of local pump-

kin farms in advance. Subscribe to farm

newsletters to stay abreast of announcements. Expect the farm to get increasingly busy as Halloween draws near, and plan accordingly. If you must go on peak days, arrive early to beat crowds and get the best parking. Leave strollers, pets and food at home and bring plenty of cash to purchase delicious seasonal snacks like kettle corn, caramel apples and fresh doughnuts. Bring friends. Spread your love of local farms by bringing friends to the pumpkin patch. What’s great about going back year after year is that you get to watch your children become old enough to try things they’ve looked forward to doing, like braving the haunted hay maze or driving the pedal carts. You might leave some activities

behind as the years go by, like the petting zoo or the kiddy playground, and that’s okay. Just be sure to choose a farm that has age-appropriate activities for your kids and their guests. You can always visit more than one farm throughout the long harvest season. Don your blue jeans, flannels and rain jackets because you are going to the country! Expect rain and mud and you cannot go wrong. Hiking boots or rain boots are your best footwear for the farm. Portable umbrellas with hand straps are helpful if you have them. Or, if you will be out in the sun all day, you may need sunscreen for your face, neck and arms. Toss a few beach towels in a bag in case you need to wipe off afterwards or cover car seats. They can also protect your car from muddy pumpkins on the ride home.

Expect to get dirty.

Make a day of it. A petting zoo, a hay or corn maze, hay rides, face painting, food and entertainment are all possibilities. If your children are different ages, parents can split up to find age-appropriate activities and then meet up later for a bite to eat or to hit the pumpkin patch. Many working farms make a big chunk of their annual income during harvest season. So why not purchase some produce before you leave? Grab photos. You are unlikely to find as many photo ops anywhere as you will find at the pumpkin patch. Try getting down low in the patch and shooting upwards. Also try standing on something and shooting downwards. Take shots yourself or hand your camera to a friendly passerby to capture your happy group. You are after fun shots, not perfect shots. And don’t forget candids. You can click three times per pose and edit out the duds later. If you know kids will tire out, get photos early on and then put the camera away and enjoy the day. Take breaks. At some farms, you will find as many activities as an amusement park! Let kids get their ya-yas out on the playground before you expect them to wait patiently in lines. If the things you want to do are on opposite ends of the property, be prepared to build in some downtime, especially if you plan to stay all day. Grab your beach towels or bring a blanket because you can usually find a shady spot under a tree
