Introducing Charitable Allowance, a fun digital tool that empowers parents to teach kids the joy of charitable giving and smart money habits.
By Charitable Impact
Charitable Impact, Canada’s most accessible donor-advised fund platform, has launched Charitable Allowance, a new tool that helps youth learn about giving back while building financial literacy. Designed to help make it easier for parents to raise socially conscious, moneysmart kids, the tool empowers young people to make their own charitable decisions.
Charitable Allowance provides a hands-on experience for children to explore charitable giving with their own giving account. With as little as $5 or $10 a month, parents or mentors can add funds to a child’s account,
set a giving frequency, and guide them as they explore causes they care about and give to charities they choose—whether it’s protecting endangered bees, helping local shelters, funding medical research, or any other cause facilitated by any registered Canadian charities. Kids experience the joy of giving firsthand, that unique sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing they’ve made a difference, distinct from the excitement one might feel from getting a new toy or visiting their favourite place. Through this process, children not only develop personal financial skills by managing their own charitable dollars but also
cultivate compassion, becoming more likely to develop a lifelong habit of giving back.
“Charitable giving, like financial literacy, needs to be taught,” says John Bromley, CEO of Charitable Impact. “Charitable Allowance helps parents nurture empathy, financial decision-making skills, and a sense of social responsibility in their kids—and it can be fun too.”
“We designed Charitable Allowance to be simple, flexible, and impactful,” says Clif Bromley, Product Lead at Charitable Impact. “Giving kids a charitable allowance inspires them to support causes they care about, practice generosity, and develop financial literacy. It also offers parents, grandparents, and mentors a meaningful way to spark conversations about social responsibility, nurture empathy, and encourage action.”
Fostering a Giving Mindset from an Early Age
Research shows that habits formed in childhood tend to stick, and early exposure to giving can shape kids into generous, socially responsible adults who are more likely to be involved in giving back to their community. Charitable Allowance makes this process easier and more engaging by allowing children to actively participate in charitable decisions, reinforcing the idea that generosity is a useful mindset.
Dr. Alex DiGiacomo, a psychologist who used Charitable Impact’s giving group to raise
money for charities working to fund mental health services and resources for young people, said, “Encouraging kids to care about giving isn’t about pressuring them—it’s about building on what they already love. When children see that sharing their interests can benefit others and bring them a sense of fulfillment, giving becomes something they want to do.”
Charitable Allowance also enables extended family and friends to participate. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and mentors can contribute to the child’s charitable fund, track their progress, and engage in meaningful conversations about being generous through charitable giving.
Charitable Allowance is available for free on Charitable Impact. Charitable dollars in the account can be donated to any registered Canadian charity that represents causes of their choice, and funds can remain in the account until the child decides how to use them. Parents and mentors can sign up for free on Charitable Impact’s website today
and start using Charitable Allowance to raise the next generation of thoughtful, engaged donors. Visit charitableimpact.com to get started.

Many think the local mountains can only be enjoyed during the winter. Little do they know the local mountains come alive with outdoor activities for families during the warmer months. Offering a wide range of activities from fun adventures to educational experiences there is something for everyone. Take a day trip to the local mountains—Cypress, Mt. Seymour or Grouse Mountain—or venture a little further and have a night in Whistler. These mountains are great destinations for making lasting memories with your family.
Whistler Blackcomb:
A Family Adventure Playground
Whistler Blackcomb is not only one of the largest ski resorts in North America but also a year-round destination for families, offering something for children of all ages. During the summer, the resort transforms into a mountain playground that’s brimming with fun, exciting activities.
Scenic Gondola and Family-Friendly Hiking Trails: From April until September, enjoy Whistler’s stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains by riding the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. Once you reach the top, families can choose from the 50+km of alpine hiking trails meandering through an ever changing landscape including lush meadows, wildflowers, streams, and glacial lakes. Some trails are short and accessible for strollers, making them perfect for younger children. Families can spend time walking or running through the meadows, taking in breathtaking views, and spotting wildlife including marmots, deer, bears and eagles.
Mountain Biking for Beginners: Mountain biking is one of Whistler’s most popular activities and is not limited to only experienced riders. With 200+ km of downhill mountain terrain or in the family-friendly Valley Trail system, there is no shortage of places to go. After mid-May, enjoy the downhill bike park recently rated best in the world. If you’re just starting out, the park offers skills clinics for children 3+ to adults.
Zip-Lining: If you are okay with heights why not zip-line through Whistler’s alpine landscape. There are lines suitable for ages 6+ that send you soaring over the treetops and feeling the rush of the wind as you glide from platform to platform.

ing the summer. Known for its breathtaking views of the city and ocean, Cypress provides plenty of opportunities for kids to explore the great outdoors.
Ride the Eagle Coaster: Ready for a rush? From June to September you can take a ride on the Eagle Coaster, departing from the top of Black Mountain. This captivating ride spans over 1700 meters and boasts an impressive vertical drop of 279 meters. Children from 3 to 7 can ride with an adult.
Hiking Trails for Families: Cypress Mountain is home to a range of family-friendly hiking trails of moderate difficulty, ranging from 6–12 kilometres in length. Don’t worry about descending the mountain when you’re tired after your hike. Just visit the Snack Shack atop the Eagle Chairlift to grab your “download” ticket. Please note that the last chair down is 6:40 pm.
Hiking Trails and Nature Exploration
Mt. Seymour offers a variety of nature-based activities for younger hikers. It’s known for its beautiful scenery, wildlife, and easy access to outdoor activities suitable for all ages.
Goldie Lake Interpretive Trail: The Goldie Lake Loop is approximately 2 km in length. Walk time is about an hour. This trail takes you past historic mountain cabins and through the temperate rainforest. Black bears may also be spotted during your journey.
Dog Mountain Trail: A relatively easy trail leading to a stunning viewpoint. Along the way, children can explore the natural world, look for wildlife, and spot flowers and plants unique to the region.
Backcountry: For families seeking a more rugged experience, backcountry trails provide a great way to explore the wilderness. They
provide a great opportunity for kids to engage with nature in a deeper way while offering a bit of a challenge for those who are up for it.
Exciting new developments are debuting at Grouse Mountain, the “Peak of Vancouver,” this summer! Just a short trip from downtown, the mountain offers a variety of funfilled summer adventures waiting to be explored.
Mountain Coaster: Opening this spring, a new 1,434 metre ride is coming to the left of the well-known ski-hill “The Cut”. Adventurers will be taken on an exhilarating ride of twists and turns, weaving through a series of trees and exciting features before being greeted by an awe-inspiring view of Vancouver. The track is a permanent structure, and a closed circuit which will return guests to the mountaintop without having to exit the cart.
Mountain Bike Park Trails: From June 2025 you will be able to take the Screaming Eagle chairlift to the only lift-accessed bike park on the North Shore.
With a focus on family-friendly fun and progression, the trails at Grouse Mountain will be a great stepping stone to the worldclass trails already present on the North Shore, and will allow for quicker, more frequent laps by eliminating the need for climbing or shuttling.
At the top of Grouse Mountain, kids can visit the Grizzly Bear Refuge, where they can learn about and observe the two resident grizzly bears, Grinder and Coola, in a natural habitat. This is an educational experience that introduces kids to wildlife conservation and allows them to learn more about these majestic creatures. Grouse Mountain also offers a variety of interactive wildlife experiences, where children can engage with local flora and fauna.
Vancouver’s mountain resorts provide the ultimate summer destination for families, offering a wide range of fun, exciting, and educational activities that will keep kids entertained and engaged. Whether it’s hiking through scenic trails, biking down mountain paths, meeting wildlife, or experiencing thrilling rides, the mountains are a perfect place to make unforgettable family memories this summer. These resorts offer something for every age and ability, ensuring that children will have an exciting time while exploring the beauty of the great outdoors. So pack your bags, grab the kids, and head to the mountains for a summer of adventure!

Tumble Jumble Richmond, 778/773-1824 instagram.com/tumblejumble playhouse
In January of last year, a series of actions aimed at enhancing student safety and well-being concerning digital technology was initiated by the provincial government. The integration of personal digital devices (PDDs) into classrooms has been a topic of significant discussion, as technology becomes increasingly embedded in daily life.
The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for the adoption of digital learning platforms. Educators sought innovative solutions to engage students in virtual settings, leading to a surge in the use of educational technologies, but everyone has been back in the classroom for years, so how should we approach technology now?
Recognizing both the advantages and potential pitfalls of PDD usage in educational settings, the BC government announced guidelines on the use of PDDs in schools, which were set for implementation in the 2024–25 academic year. These guidelines aimed to mitigate distractions, address the habit-forming nature of digital platforms, and combat the rise in cyberbullying, all of which can adversely affect the learning process and student welfare. The school year is coming to an end, what was the outcome of these
guidelines? How did the various school districts manage them?
In alignment with provincial directives, various school districts across BC have formulated policies to regulate PDD usage. Most include the following:
• Elementary students are prohibited from accessing or using PDDs during school hours, effectively enforcing a “bell-to-bell” restriction.
• Secondary school students are not permitted PDDs during instructional time unless explicitly allowed by educators for specific curricular objectives. Exceptions are made for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or medical needs that necessitate device usage.
The province is also providing digital literacy training for students and parents, so they have the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe from online harms, become good digital citizens and develop healthy relationships with technology.
The integration of PDDs in classrooms presented several challenges:
• Distractions: Unregulated device usage can lead to constant interruptions from notifications, hindering student concentration and engagement.
• Health Implications: Excessive screen time has been linked to various health concerns, including eye strain, sleep disturbances, and reduced physical activity.
• Equity Issues: Not all students have equal access to personal digital devices, leading to disparities in learning opportunities. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted that while technology offers personalized instruction, it also leads to distractions and teacher burnout. Despite 50% of teachers reporting increased digital classwork, detractors argue that it misaligns with health advice to limit screen time. Students spend significant portions of their school day on these devices, with some preferring traditional methods due to focus and health concerns. Research on the effectiveness of educational technology is mixed, highlighting that while digital tools have improved specific learning outcomes, many claims by tech companies are overstated.
The discourse around PDDs in BC classrooms underscores the need for a balanced approach that leverages technological advancements while safeguarding student well-being. Ongoing collaboration among educators, policymakers, parents, and students is essential to navigate the complexities of digital integration in education. By fostering environments that promote responsible and purposeful use of technology, BC aims to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for a digitally connected world.
Unplugged Canada is a grassroots movement aimed at educating parents about the risks of early smartphone use and inspiring a collective commitment to restoring childhood. To do this, they aim to reduce children’s exposure to smartphones and prioritize their mental health by helping parents make more informed decisions about when to introduce technology into their children’s lives.
The Unplugged Pledge is a promise to refrain from giving children smartphones until they are old enough to handle them responsibly, at least 14 years old. Of course “dumb” phones and smart watches can be used as communication tools.
By signing the pledge, parents join to shift the cultural expectation around smartphones. Instead of viewing early smartphone use as a given, the pledge invites parents to take time and consider the long-term implications of digital exposure for their children. The idea is to create a more thoughtful, intentional approach to technology use in children’s lives, emphasizing that childhood should be a time for exploration, play, and real-life connections, not a time to be consumed by screens.
Research shows that too much exposure to smartphones can impair cognitive development, hinder creativity, and contribute to emotional and social challenges. Children who spend excessive time on screens may:
• Struggle to develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional regulation.
• Be exposed to potential dangers, including inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators, without proper supervision and guidance.
• Feel isolated, low self-esteem, and anxiety, through social media use.
• Miss out on the opportunities for face-toface interaction that are essential for emotional growth.
Real-life experiences of outdoor play, sports, creative arts, and/or community involvement, are critical to a child’s overall development. These activities help children build resilience, strengthen emotional bonds, and learn how to navigate challenges in healthy ways. Being in nature, engaging in physical play, and interacting with friends and peers in person all contribute to the development of social and emotional intelligence.
Unplugged Canada advocates for a childhood filled with opportunities for creativity and curiosity. By removing the distractions of smartphones, children are free to explore the world around them and develop their own sense of identity. Instead of scrolling through a screen, they can engage with the natural world, interact with others, and pursue their passions.
Parents play a central role in shaping the experiences and future of their children. By signing the Unplugged Pledge, parents commit to protecting their children from the risks of early smartphone exposure. This commitment extends beyond just one family, it is part of a larger movement aimed at creating a culture that values childhood and places greater emphasis on face-to-face connections.
Unplugged Canada encourages communities to come together to share resources, experiences, and ideas. The movement offers support for parents who are taking the pledge, providing educational materials, tips for reducing screen time, and suggestions for fostering healthy digital habits. By creating a network of like-minded families, Unplugged Canada helps to reinforce the idea that prioritizing mental and emotional well-being is a shared goal.
Through research, advocacy, and community initiatives, Unplugged Canada aims to influence policies and practices that promote healthy screentime habits for children. They advocate for broader societal changes, such as more stringent regulations on digital media and stronger protections for children’s mental health.
The organization’s website offers valuable insights, real-world examples, and stories of success to aid parents. With this knowledge, families can make informed decisions about their children’s digital lives, knowing that they are part of a larger movement that prioritizes their children’s long-term well-being.
Unplugged Canada envisions a future where children grow up without the constant pressure of smartphone culture, in an environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and emotional development—free from the distractions of addictive algorithms and screen time overload. By committing to this cause, families and communities are creating a foundation for healthier, happier, and more connected generations.
By choosing to unplug, and joining the 410 other schools and 1,784 pledges, families are not just saying no to smartphones, they are saying yes to the richness of real-life experiences, authentic connections, and a childhood that is free to thrive in the world beyond the screen.
Unplugged Canada’s mission is to unplug smart phones, rekindle real-life connections, and guide our children towards a life filled with the warmth of human relationships and the beauty of the natural world. www.unpluggedcanada.com

The governments of Canada and British Columbia have created a program to provide healthy meals to kids throughout the school year. Through this program they save working families hundreds of dollars in grocery bills. They also support local economies, farmers and producers by sourcing food grown locally, whenever possible.
On March 7, 2025, the Honourable Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and the Honourable Lisa Beare, British Columbia’s Minister of Education and Child Care, announced an agreement that will enable British Columbia to enhance school food programs for 90,000 kids in just over 1,000 schools across the province this school year. With this agreement, families in British Columbia with two children in school can save an estimated $800 in grocery bills a year on average.
“When kids are hungry, they can’t focus—it’s that simple. That’s why we’re making sure more kids in BC get healthy meals at school, with food grown right here in Canada whenever possible. It helps parents save hundreds on groceries, aims to support local farmers and local economies, and most importantly, makes sure kids have the fuel they need to learn—because no child should have to get through the school day on an empty stomach.” —The Honourable Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development
Our National School Food Program is a direct investment into the middle class— helping teachers and making mornings a little easier for working families. It is also a safety net for the kids who need this support the most. As part of this agreement, the Government of Canada will invest approxi-
mately $39.4 million over the next three years to enhance school food programs in the province to feed more kids, including in rural and remote areas. This investment will mean important improvements to school food programs such as increasing the number of students served, purchasing much-needed school kitchen equipment, and increasing the nutrition of school meals which will provide more inclusive menu options that take into account dietary restrictions and cultural preferences.
Now more than ever, families are choosing to eat locally grown food, and this is reflected in BC’s school food programming, which aims to build strong community partnerships with local growers and food producers to see more BC food in schools, ultimately investing back in local economic growth, where possible.
Building a national school food program is part of the federal government’s commitment to help make life more affordable for families across the country. “This is a big step forward in making sure kids right across the country have the food they need to succeed in school. Through this partnership with the Government of British Columbia, we’re investing in our children’s future—serving up healthy, local meals so they can learn and grow.” —The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food .
To help your school get a school lunch program advocate at the school level through your PAC, school board, and with the provincial government. The resources are there to ensure every child has access to healthy meals.
• British Columbia is the latest to join forces with the Government of Canada to ensure children have access to nutritious school meals. They will continue working with all provinces, territories, Indigenous partners and stakeholders to ensure every child in Canada has the food they need to reach their full potential.
•Budget 2024’s investment of $1 billion over five years includes distinctionsbased funding for First Nations on reserves as well as Inuit, Métis and modern treaty and self-government agreement holders. We are working directly with Indigenous partners on the rollout of that funding, with more information to come.
•In addition to the National School Food Program, the federal government launched the new School Food Infrastructure Fund in September. The Fund will deliver over $20 million to help not-for-profit organizations invest in infrastructure and equipment to support school food programming across Canada.
•In 2023, the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia allocated $71.5 million annually in dedicated, multiyear funding to school districts to create and expand school food programs in schools.
•This initiative, known as Feeding Futures, aims to provide students with stigma-free access to nutritious, locally sourced food, enhancing their learning outcomes and fostering stronger connections with their school communities.

Summer is almost here. That time of year when our kiddos will be ready to put their school books away and fill their backpacks full of snacks, sunscreen, bathing suits, and whatever else they need to accompany them on their adventures and explorations.
Though the featured summer camp choices in this story are by no means all inclusive of the wide variety that are offered provincewide, each camp provides so much opportunity for our kids to engage their minds and imaginations, learn new skills, while also building upon their social and emotional skills.
Let’s start off with overnight summer camps as they have always been a highlight of summer break. Kids can spend a few nights to a few weeks diving into endless thrill seeking and social experiences—from water sports to ziplines, from nature hikes during the day to fun games, activities, and collaborative projects in the evenings. Of course, one unforgettable moment is the magic of sitting around the campfire and sharing songs and stories with youth leaders and new friends. When considering an overnight summer camp, one option that I can share with you is my past family experience at Camp Qwanoes. I recall the special memories made here with my daughter and her entire daycare class. Laughter and conversations linger in my memory of shared cabins and meals and bus rides to beautiful outdoor spots where we embarked on many adventures on land and in water. Our evenings often ended with gatherings full of high energy youth music and stories. It was a wonderful shared family and community experience.
On land or sea, kids love to pet, play with, and—depending on the size and nature of the animal—possibly even ride them, creating amazing memories and experiences they might not have anywhere else.
Sea Animals: The Vancouver Aquarium offers children endless opportunities to engage with marine life and hands-on learning through
its progressive programs. Starting at the tender age of 5 years, my own daughter was eager to start camp as soon as she could. She attended every summer until she aged out at age 12. At 9 years of age, she entered into the Family Volunteer Program. Acting primarily as her ride and chaperone, I completed the training program alongside my now aspiring shark biologist. During our shifts she would proudly set up exhibits of her favourite animal—the great white shark! Next we would walk around and provide information to guests before ending our days at Clown Fish Cove where Haylee would guide children and their families on how to safely handle small sea creatures. Annual sleepovers and visits to the Mammal Rescue Centre were some of the most precious memories of her childhood.
Land Animals: As for land animals, there is something really special about the connection between a child and a horse. I first learned of Timberline Ranch during a school field trip years ago and was blown away by the ranch’s immense offerings—from the beauty of the property and its facilities to the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and of course, to the beautiful horses for the children to engage with. At the time of my visit, I was not aware of the wide range of camps that are offered at Timberline Ranch and how much more is involved than just horseback riding. Ideal for ages 9 and up, camp options vary from the newly added day camps (for those not yet ready for overnight stays) to week-long stayover camps. Days are packed full of rid-

ing and bonding with the horses along with CYOA (choose your own adventures) with many other extra activities including archery, rock climbing, zipline, and so on.
Gaining attention as a safer option for kids during COVID, outdoor programs have now become a favourite choice of parents for both camps and formal education during the school year. One such program, which started as an outdoor preschool and schoolaged program years ago, has gained so much attention and merit that it now also operates as a BC Independent School in North Vancouver for grades K–5. Saplings Outdoor Programs and Nature School are both offering summer camps at many of their locations.
While visiting their nature centre a few years back, I was dazzled by the trained forest educators while witnessing the way they inspired the children to explore the wonders found in our local forests and beaches. What most impressed me was how the educators fostered the relationship between child and nature. I see this as a huge opportunity to help kids grow their self-confidence as they learn to become risk assessors and decision makers while doing things like building shelters, hiking, and going on nature treasure hunts.
If your children love nature, two other nature-based camps worth checking out this summer are Burns Bog in Delta and Stanley Park Eco Camps. Both camps are committed to nature conservation and are beautiful tourist attractions in themselves.
From team sports to dance, yoga, bicycling or scooter clubs, to the very unique experiences of learning archery or even joining the circus for a week, the choices available for the sports category are extensive. The ones that stood out to me were two soccer camps that focused on character development and sportsmanship as their main achievements. First, Free Kick, was founded and is run by soccer icon and pioneer of women’s soccer in Canada, Carrie Serwetnyk. As a former Canadian National team player Carrie has created a program for kids drawing from her love of sharing her extraordinary World Cup experiences with the younger generation. Her main objective is to instill the love of soccer
while also focusing on building good character in the players. It’s about teaching not just the skills of the game, but also values like teamwork, respect, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
Another soccer camp, not to be missed, that shares similar goals is the Royal Soccer Club. This program has grown to be one of the largest across Canada because of its reputation for quality programming and is available in many communities across our province.
Starting off this category is the iconic interdisciplinary arts organization, Arts Umbrella, offering top notch programs in all art disciplines, from visual arts to music, dance and the performing arts. As a fellow early music educator, I have to also include a program that’s offering a beautiful foundation of conservatory music in age appropriate and playfully fun music camps for kids of all ages at Colourstrings Conservatory of Music. Next, another camp choice not to be missed this summer is at Gateway Theatre.
This quality theatre company offers unique experiences that will leave lasting impressions. Kids who attend these camps experience the excitement of being inside a professional theatre, where they’re taught by passionate, working artists dedicated to helping children grow in a safe and supportive environment. Kids in these camps are set up for success by practicing Gateway Theatre’s philosophy of process over product.
Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools are also offering performing arts camps this summer with a similar philosophy of focusing on setting their kids up for success by teaching them theatre skills while instilling selfconfidence in these young performers.
I love this because it allows kids to learn the skills of acting, singing, and dancing before performing in front of an audience, while still giving parents and guardians the opportunity to watch and support their progress in developing performance skills.
Who said that STEM was only sought after during the school year? Definitely not kids who are into building Lego® robotics. Daedalos Enrichment Programs offers opportunities for kids to bring their ideas to life through hands-on learning and exploration,
Kids in these camps are set up for success by practicing Gateway Theatre’s philosophy of process over product.
and has built a strong reputation for fostering creativity and innovation. Another summer camp worth mentioning that offers a unique blend of STEM and environmental studies is at Petit Architect. Here, kids design and build their own architectural models while learning

about the relationship between architecture, interior design, sustainability, and the environment.
We would like to end off this story with a whole new world, or rather an 1800-square foot indoor city, at Kidtropolis. As a licensed early childhood educator who is a huge fan of dramatic play I can safely say that this level of imaginative play is nothing I have ever witnessed before and offers kids unlimited opportunities to play, explore and learn all at the same time. At Kidtropolis summer camps, kids enjoy a whole schedule of fun activities, experiments and games offered within this amazing environment! If you close your eyes and picture someone struggling to get and stay pregnant, most people imagine a childfree couple. They might then have an impulse to think that they need to “just relax” or “wait and it will happen”. This is when I would push the Taboo™ boardgame button.
People who don’t have any living-children experience can experience fertility struggles, but many families in BC struggle on their sibling journey. None of them need to hear advice, even if it’s well intentioned. Many families get and stay pregnant easily or somewhat easily for their first baby but struggle for their next, and other times it’s a struggle to bring home all their babies. It’s not their fault and treatment is part of their journey. I wish just relaxing helped. Trust me.
Of these people experiencing fertility struggles, a small portion will face invitrofertilization (IVF).
When it comes to IVF I hold a thought in each hand. One, it’s hard to face IVF because of the challenges and how devastating it is to not get a “free baby” or a baby through less intrusive means like intrauterine insemination
By Laura Spencer
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved, fertilized with sperm in a lab, and then transferred to the uterus to help achieve pregnancy.
(IUI), yet on the other hand I’m grateful that it’s available to so many British Columbians because of how life changing it can be.
Thanks to IVF I have my son, Ethan. My husband and I have male factor infertility and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
I became a fertility coach when I was facing my IVF journey.
Some other reasons someone might try IVF
There are many reasons IVF is the next or only option for people to grow their families.
• Medical infertility including unexplained infertility
• Circumstantial infertility such as single parent by choice and/or LGBQT+ families
•Repeat pregnancy loss (RPL) or stillbirth
•Endometriosis or other health conditions
• Anatomical abnormalities such as blocked fallopian tubes, missing tubes, or unsuccessful vasectomy reversal
•Low egg reserve
•Screening embryos for a disease
Nobody is to blame.
Whether you go through IVF for your first
baby or not, it’s a lot to process. It’s that old friend grief that takes the wheel.
The hard and messy parts of doing IVF
If you open #IVF on Tik Tok or Instagram, the reels of IVF can hold your attention for hours on end because the challenges are plentiful and if it pays off, the rewards are peak bliss.
As for the challenges, one of the biggest is that it’s not a guarantee. Families can go through a cycle without the certainty that they’ll come out the other side with a little one who they’ll eventually drive to graduation one day.
It’s untrue that IVF = a live birth.
Another challenge is scheduling IVF into your already busy life of parenting and maybe working out of the home, too, not to mention the physical toll while keeping up with these added demands. With extra appointments and hormones raging, relationships can be strained. Having a little one to parent and stop from body slamming onto your tender tummy (maybe that’s just my son) while you go through the injections, can be another level of adulting unlocked.
Plus, this can mean long trips because there are only 3 cities where you can do an egg retrieval in BC: Vancouver, Burnaby and Victoria.
Adding to the uncertainty, it can take more than one cycle or multiple to have success and often that’s a surprise for your heart and your wallet. It’s an expensive plot twist.
Yes, it’s expensive. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. If you don’t have $20,000 stuffed under your mattress or a generous, long-lost relative, you might be out of luck or need years to save up. Too few companies provide insurance coverage for IVF, or very little, which leaves many families footing the bill or else another baby just isn’t in the cards. The guilt of not being able to afford a baby can be the biggest pill to swallow, along with your giant prenatal vitamin that you continue to take in hopes that you end up getting and staying pregnant while waiting for IVF coverage.
Publicly funded IVF is coming to BC in July There is good news. Some IVF coverage is coming to our province. In March 2024 the provincial government formally announced that one round of IVF will be funded, with 68 million dollars earmarked for an IVF program. I was there as a guest speaker when the government made the press release and was able to thank premier David Eby.
I was and am grateful for all the future families who will receive this needed treatment.
The bad news is that here has been such a lag between the announcement and the rollout, and it’s looking like the roll out will be delayed from April to July 2025. [This is based on when the article was written in February 2025].
There’s a lot we don’t know, including the inclusion criteria. There is talk that it will be income-based but like so much of the fertility journey, we must wait to see. When the program launches I will rejoice for those who benefit. For now, I have a lot of compassion for the families waiting for this life changing opportunity.
• Find community. There are support groups and resources through Butterfly Run BC. Don’t go through this alone.
• Keep an eye on butterflyrun.ca for updates.
Infertility affects about 1 in 6 people worldwide and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. There are 20,000 IVF cycles in Canada a year*. If you know that someone in your life is facing IVF, here are some considerations.
• If you get pregnant yourself, tell them 1 on 1 in a text or over the phone and not in a group setting so that they can give themselves the self care they need.
• Talk to your family doctor or go to a walkin clinic for a referral to one of the 3 fertility clinics (Olive Fertility in Victoria, Vancouver and Surrey; PCRM in Burnaby or Victoria; Grace Fertility in Vancouver; Twig Fertility has announced plans to open a Vancouver location and you can join their waitlist).
• Do a semen analysis with your family doctor or be ready to choose donor sperm. Also, be ready to do bloodwork and pay for an ultrasound like the Hycosy or get a referral for the publicly funded HSG. Some blood tests are MSP covered, but others are not.
• Consider speaking with a certified fertility coach to plan all aspects of IVF. Support can make a huge difference.
• If your mental health is struggling, consider finding a counsellor with a speciality in fertility. Fertility can bring up trauma and the stress can be lessened with the right mental health provider.
• If they are about to do an egg retrieval cycle, offer to take their little one(s) or drop off a casserole. You can provide support in the same way you would if they were postpartum. Allow them to decline.
• Don’t give unsolicited advice, especially if you’ve never had fertility struggles. They will already be getting that and it almost never helps. Be a non-judgemental listening friend.
