Vancouver Academy of Music:

By Bev Yaworski

ancouver Academy of Music has a long, successful history in Vancouver. Parents such as Gladys and Roger Young have been a part of this history as kids themselves. The Youngs encouraged a love of music and wanted their own children to share a similar experience studying at this music school. “The quality of instruction and the dedication of the instructors are inspiring for the students as well as the parents,” says Gladys Young. “Events such as concerts, master classes, open houses, and guest artists are fantastic extra-curricular opportunities offered by the school to support student learning.” The Young boys, Joshua 13 years old is studying cello and Shane 10 years old plays the violin. Both boys participate in the jun-

ior and senior orchestras. “Our sons enjoy creating music with the skills they have learned through their music lessons,” says Gladys, “And they also enjoy playing music with other kids in the orchestra.” Founded in 1969, Vancouver Academy of Music is the most established music school in the Lower Mainland. Located at Vanier Park across from the Planetarium, the Academy has over 1000 students. A full range of classes is offered to students of all ages and abilities, taught by highly trained, internationally recognized instructors. “The practical impact of music is immediate,” says Joseph Elworthy, Executive Director Vancouver Academy of Music. “It enhances communication, serves as a tool for personal development and provides an

awareness of community service and civic responsibility. Research supporting the link between music and academic achievement is considerable by demonstrating higher test scores in math, reading and writing regardless of socio-economic status. What we see with this data is heightened concentration and memory as a result of musical study. Combined with the discipline of consistent practice, all these factors easily translate to success in the classroom.” Artistic Philosophy

“Vancouver Academy of Music believes in the inspiring and transcendental nature of the performing arts,” says Joseph. “Great music provides an insight into the human condition and serves as a tool for artistic

classes & programs and personal growth. Our core teaching philosophy lies in the cultivation of character and cognition in every student through the discipline acquired through the study of music. Our students are engaged in the community by bringing their musical talents to venues such as care facilities, hospitals, charitable events and community gatherings.” For example: talented brass students played at a Fundraiser for Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan this past February. “As the Academy expands, we are looking to incorporate the diverse musical traditions of Vancouver’s ethnic communities,” adds Joseph Elworthy. “We also believe that music is best learned and enjoyed in a group environment. Our faculty and staff place great importance in providing a learning environment that is encouraging and supportive—a place where kids can diffuse the daily pressures of school and enjoy making music with friends.” Types of Musical Instruction

Academy students are able to take lessons along diverse creative paths: piano, violin, cello, voice, music theory and more. For over 43 years, the school has been a global leader in the Suzuki method of music instruction. This method places great importance on the natural development of the ear using language acquisition theories, as well as emphasizing the value of a shared learning environment between parent and child. The Traditional teaching style is also followed which involves students simultaneously learning instrumental instruction and

musical notation. Other types of teaching methods include: Orff (music, movement, drama and speech, similar to a child’s world of play) and Kodaly (syllables expressing musical notes and rhythm exploration through natural movements). Instructors come with backgrounds from respected institutions including: UBC, Juilliard, Yale University, the Vancouver Symphony and the Vancouver Opera. Some Program Highlights

Brain Boosters is an innovative Academy program for children aged three to thirteen years that stimulates both hemispheres of the brain through music and math. Created by certified instructor Lisa Amini, the program has been very well received by parents and children. “Brain Boosters can work for children as young as 2 1/2 years to learn the universal languages of math and music,” says Lisa. “Equally, it works for children with special needs, including those who are challenged by autism or are hearing-impaired, because these students can learn and show their understanding of math and music non-verbally. All students in this course learn to concentrate and focus, and also seem to have a better appreciation of the world they live in.” Soundfest is a new summer program where students of all instruments can unleash their inner Mozart with lessons, group ensemble and even an iPad orchestra at four one-week camps from July 9 to August 3 for children aged four to eighteen years. This program includes cultural excursions with the

Space Centre, Museum of Vancouver, Bard on the Beach, and the Maritime Museum— to “stimulate the senses, challenge the intellect, and spur musical proficiency.”

What we see with this data is heightened concentration and memory as a result of musical study. Combined with the discipline of consistent practice, all these factors easily translate to success in the classroom.

Starting in September, an expanded Early Childhood curriculum with classes for threemonth old babies and up will be launched. A class for expectant mothers looking to bond with their baby and brush up on their musical knowledge is also being offered. “Many parents and grandparents take advantage of the Adult Learning program,” adds Joseph. “They can enjoy playing music with their children and perhaps rekindle their own youthful passion for music.” The Academy is not only for exceptional, musically gifted children aspiring to become professional musicians, but also is for anyone who has an interest in music. All levels of creative talent are welcome. Registration for programs is quick and easy with the use of online registration on their website at www.vam.ca. An exciting period of stimulating growth and renewal is underway at this respected musical institution. “We are pursuing the possibility of expansion within the Lower Mainland,” adds Joseph, “as well as collaborative partnerships with international music schools and satellite locations in Asia, along with continuing the important work promoting the value of music education in this community. The Academy aims to nurture a life-long appreciation of music and performing arts.” bcparent.ca • 29

Altruistic eye doctor sees what happens when kids’ vision doesn’t get tested

W

hen young children have trouble learning to read, sometimes it’s because they can’t see well enough in class. Della Chow, a Vancouver optometrist, finds this happens alarmingly often, so she urges parents to take their children for a complete eye exam before kindergarten — ideally, at the age of three. Kids don’t need to know the alphabet to have their vision tested, she says. If schoolchildren don’t see well, it ends up becoming more than just being a reading problem, says Chow, whose Kitsilano-based practice is called Della Optique. Children who see poorly or whose eyes get tired in class can easily become inattentive and then badly behaved. “Then they get their eyes checked and they get glasses” and the problems go away. “The parents feel so guilty!” The B.C. Association of Optometrists points out that one in five children entering school has a vision disorder and that 80 per cent of a child’s learning is based on vision.

Chow knows she’s right about children needing early eye exams because she herself didn’t get one. Her vision wasn’t corrected until she was in Grade 3, and it turned out she needed a strong prescription for nearsightedness. “I don’t know how I even got to Grade 3,” marvels Chow, a graduate of the University of Waterloo’s doctor of optometry program who has been in practice for 15 years. Some kids have excellent distance vision, so their parents mistakenly think they’re fine when, in fact, they can’t focus on close work. Chow believes so strongly in vision testing as a precondition for literacy that she has donated $5,000 to the Can-West Global Foundation’s Raise-a-Reader campaign. This makes her what’s called a bronze sponsor. With the provincial government matching all the money donated in the campaign, her generous contribution is doubled. “I’m so excited that my $5,000 is turning into $10,000,” says Chow, who is encouraging other optometrists to donate.
