Bryan–College Station Chamber of Commerce: 2012-2013 Annual Report
From the Boardroom Things have gone well at the chamber these past couple of years. We’ve exceeded our budget, we’ve grown the membership, we’ve expanded our outreach to the business community and we’ve never lost sight of why we’re here. We are the only organization whose only purpose is to improve the environment for businesses and help them grow. In my two years, as Chairman, I had areas of particular focus I wanted to develop: One, I wanted to explain to the young people around us the role of profits in serving a business; how profits provide jobs, spur investment and growth and helps support the non-profit sector . We’ve been in front of Junior Leadership Brazos with this message a lot and I’m happy to watch these young people begin to understand that capitalism, tempered with morality, can be the source of much good in a community. There are many other groups that are working to encourage young people to answer the call of entrepreneurship: Junior Achievement, Lemonade Day, and the University students who are taking advantage of start-up Aggieland. There are 32 student owned startups being shepherded there. They completed their first elevator pitch competition and chose the top 8 for lunch with Dr. Loftin. These students are learning what it takes to put it all on the line.) I also wanted to work to part the Maroon Curtain and get the business community and A&M to have a relationship so our businesses would know what the driver of our economy is doing. President Dr. Bowen Loftin has been the biggest proponent of this; and with the help of A&M staff serving on our board like Bobby Bisor and Dr. Lea Ann Ray; we have presented programs that were directly tied to what TAMU is doing that will affect business. Our business community will miss Dr. Loftin’s leadership as much as his next community will benefit from it.. Our reputation is growing statewide. We’ve had visiting chambers from different parts of Texas come here to visit. The Chamber of Grapevine flew a delegation of 10 down here to watch how we do things. An annual review wouldn’t be complete without some thank you notes: Royce Hickman and the Chamber Staff have kept my schedule carefully planned and prepared. Thanks to the Bryan Broadcasting staff for picking up the extra work when I found myself out of the office more than I would like. And of course to my wife of 37 years, Lillie. Lil was there before every speech and appearance helping me prepare and helping me focus on the important points. You cannot make the commitment this chamber requires of its Chairman without support at home. Lillie provided that and found a way to be at almost all our special events. The B/CS Chamber of Commerce is the only organization whose only job is to help businesses in our cities to grow. Whether through networking events, training at our Lunch and Learn programs, education, or effectively communicating the priorities of business in DC and Austin, I think we’re making that happen.

Bryan–College Station Chamber of Commerce: 2012-2013 Annual Report
A word from our Pre{ident It is a pleasure to present the fifteenth consecutive Annual Report of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. While there are some concern about what may happen nationally, our local economy has continued to fare well overall and certainly better than most other communities. This has been a year filled with excitement and accomplishments for your Chamber. We are pleased to report another successful year in terms of our programs and our finances. We continue to focus on providing opportunities for our members to both promote their businesses and network. The year began with a successful and informative Annual Banquet, featuring a presentation by Dr. Brett Giroir, who discussed the future of our community. That was followed by two popular events that set attendance records: our Annual Ag Breakfast with over 350 attendees and our Annual Economic Outlook Conference with over 460 attendees. We hosted several other successful and popular events including A Taste of Aggieland: an Epicurean Extravaganza, Job Fair, Ladies Nite and our Annual LobsterFest & Golf Classic. This year, the focus of our Community Softball Classic (formerly our Celebrity Softball Classic) was to honor those who protect us each and every day. For the first time the game was held at Olsen Field and matched our police officers against our fire fighters, with bragging rights on the line. Part of the proceeds went to the 100 Club, an organization that has put a substantial amount of financial resources into our community supporting the families of those impacted by tragic events. Our Economic Outlook Briefing Luncheon was an interesting and informative report on the Texas Legislative Session by State Senator Charles Schwertner, State Representative John Raney and State Representative Kyle Kacal, and our “Lunch & Learn” educational efforts have grown in popularity with our members.
Royce Hickman President and CEO
Once again we held over one hundred Ribbon Cuttings this year, including numerous Deluxe Ribbon Cuttings which remain popular with our members. Our Economic Development agreement with Brazos County was renewed, and for the second year in a row, they sponsored our annual “Chamber Day” in April. The event attracted over 130 volunteers who visited approximately 670 businesses. For the third year in a row, a short survey was part of the visit. This survey provided Brazos County and your Chamber with very valuable information. We found that 57% of our businesses experienced a sales growth over last year, 69% expected our local economy to improve and 40% expected their number of employees to increase. We remain committed to having a major focus on legislative affairs; national, state and local. Our trip to Washington D.C. in May was possibly the best ever. Thanks to the efforts of Congressman Bill Flores and his staff, our delegation had an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with officials who would make an impressive list of “who’s who” in Washington circles and included; Senator John Cornyn (Senate Minority Whip), Senator Ted Cruz, Congressman Eric Cantor of Virginia (House Majority Leader), Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin (Chairman, House Budget Committee), Congressman Kevin McCarthy of California (House Majority Whip), Congressman Sam Graves of Missouri (Chairman, House Small Business Committee), Congressman Frank Lucus of Oklahoma (Chairman, House Agriculture Committee) and Congressman Jeff Miller of Florida (Chairman, House Committee on Veterans Affairs). In addition to our two senators, we also heard from Congressman Bill Flores, Congressman Gene Green, Congressman Henry Cuellar and Congressman Louie Gohmert, all of Texas. It is hard to believe how anyone visiting Washington would be able to top this day! We also had a very successful trip to Austin in February, and we continue to host our Local Candidates Forums on a regular basis. Our Legislative Affairs Committee is already working hard on the upcoming trip to Washington D.C., currently scheduled for May 5th through 8th. It continues to be a source of great pride that a senior executive with the Texas Association of Business called our Chamber one of the top three chambers in the State of Texas from a legislative standpoint. Financially, your Chamber finished the year with a bottom line that exceeded our budget for the thirteenth consecutive year and we continue to maintain a healthy cash position. This success is the result of the efforts of so many. I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who have, by their commitment, established this Chamber as one of the busiest and most outstanding Chambers in the State. I particularly appreciate the commitment and dedication of our Board of Directors, under the leadership of Board Chair, Ben Downs of Bryan Broadcasting, our Ambassadors, under the leadership of Teresa Benden with College Station ISD Foundation, our Leadership Brazos Alumni Association, under the leadership of Brian Bowers of The Bank & Trust and our extremely dedicated and committed staff, who, in spite of being shorthanded at times this year, still accomplish so much. We look forward to another strong year of accomplishments under the leadership of our Board of Directors, chaired by Glen Brewer of American Momentum Bank. If you are one of our many outstanding Chamber members, thank you for your commitment to our community and to your Chamber. If you are not a member, we invite you to call 260-5200 and join us today as we continue our efforts to provide an environment that gives every business in our community the best chance for SUCCESS!

The Ambassador program is a group of 42 Chamber member volunteers that graciously give their time to support the Chamber in so many ways. Some of the goals of the Ambassadors group are to strengthen the Chamber by recruiting new members, fostering healthy relationships with new members by attending ribbon cuttings and Chamber events, as well as supporting the Chamber by volunteering on committees and assisting with events. It is estimated that over the past year, the Ambassador group donated over 2,000 volunteer hours the Chamber of Commerce and their community. If you would like to learn more about the Ambassador program, visit us online at www. bcschamber.org or contact the Chamber office at (979) 260-5200.

Chamber Day
Ce l e b r i t y S o f t b a l l
More than 700 businesses were visited during the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce’s annual Chamber Day on March 21,2013 marking another successful year for the program. Approximately 150 volunteers hit the B-CS streets in small groups. During “Chamber Day” visits, the Chamber and its volunteers took the opportunity to thank local businesses for doing business in Bryan and College Station as well as to inquire about how the economy has affected them and how overall business is going. They also gave the businesses the opportunity to discuss any problems or concerns they have and any other issues affecting them. An unofficial survey was conducted, which showed businesses indicated sales are up, new employees are being hired, and credit is available despite many local businesses feeling the nation isn’t out of the recession yet.
The Chamber’s Celebrity Softball Classic grew by leaps and bounds in its third year, welcoming more than 900 people through the gates at the Blue Bell Park at Texas A& M University. The event serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit B/CS Chamber of Commerce and also raised money for the 100 Club which supports the families of fallen firefighters and police officers. The event created a family-friendly and fun environment for businesses to take their employees or clients.
Partial Survey Results: 1. Are sales better this year than last? 2. Are you planning on hiring this year? 3. What do you expect our local economy to do?
“Yes” = 57% “Yes” = 40% ”Increase”=69%

Bryan–College Station Chamber of Commerce: 2012-2013 Annual Report
Communication{
Vice Chair Angelique Gammon The Communication division launched several strategic projects during 2012-2013. With support from the media committee the Chamber website www.bcschamber.org was redesigned and updated. New features were added such as an online RSVP, an improved calendar and more information about advertising/ sponsorship opportunities and new member orientation. The new website was launched in April of 2013. The Chamber also finished the production and launch of the Mobile Chamber Membership Directory. This new website feature allows smart-phones and other mobile devices (e.g., I-Pad and tablets) to search for Chamber Members either alphabetically or by their business category. The new website feature will give shoppers on the go access to business addresses, phone number and website. In some cases this feature will also have direct links to maps, phone call buttons, and the member website. The Communications division is also responsible for the publication of the monthly Connections magazine, the weekly InSider Report, this Annual Report, the Chamber’s Facebook page, Twitter account, sales and marketing collateral and much more.
Membership Directory “Shop Locally”
The Chamber’s annual “Membership Directory” will be published in January of 2014, and is distributed to all Chamber members. The directory is published ever year and includes alphabetical and categorical listings of all the current Chamber of Commerce members. Also included in the directory are overviews of the Chamber, as well as community and county information. Directories are available to the public for $20
