To become an instructor you should be fifty or older, attend one day of training and complete an AARP Driver Safety Class. Classes are held over a two-day period with each class running four hours; students must attend both sessions. These positions take place in the evenings at the Center for Regional Services on 29th Street in Bryan (close to KBTX studio) and are a wonderful opportunity to help others to succeed - perfect for retired educators. Help with Drive-thru Food Pantry
Elizabeth Lutheran Church Community Pantry in Caldwell is open on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Volunteers help organize food boxes and supplements such as eggs, meat, bread, and fresh produce to distribute to clients as they drive up in cars. Volunteers help direct traffic, verify client paperwork and distribute food from an outside utility building. Volunteers must be able to work out of doors, stand for extended length of time, bend and lift boxes of food. Help with Flowers and Phones
Lulac Oak Hill is a lovely senior housing organization on Anderson in College Station. Volunteer garden assistants are needed to assist elderly and/or disable residents with gardening by building wheelchair accessible flower beds; planting flowers or vegetables; tending to the gardens. If you have a pleasant telephone voice you can be the first cheerful voice a caller hears. Helping Hands Valet Parking
Waldenbrooke Estates is a senior living community located across from CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan which provides independent living services to senior citizens. The “Helping Hands” volunteer program is for residents with walkers. They need their walkers to get to the dining room, but once there, walkers can be a hazard to other residents as they make their way to the tables. Helping Hands volunteers valet park the walkers and bring walkers to the residents when they are finished with the meal. The nice perk for volunteers is they can enjoy a wonderful lunch provided by Waldenbrooke. If you would like to serve as a Helping Hands volunteer, call 979-774-1298.
Historical Tour Guides
George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station celebrates the life and career of our nation’s 41st president. The museum opened in 1997 and exhibits more than 90,000 artifacts, including a portion of the Berlin Wall, thousands of gifts from heads of state around the world and
a WWII-era torpedo bomber aircraft. This, along with wonderful traveling exhibits, makes this a destination for approximately 150,000 visitors per year. Volunteers are needed especially for weekend shifts. The shifts are only 2 1/2 hours long and are for work in the museum, greeting visitors, starting the film in the media room, and taking photos in the Oval Office. Brenham State Supported Living Center provides residential treatment and training services to around 310 people - children, women and men with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The goal of staff and volunteers is to help enhance residents’ quality of life. Thirty Days of Drivers - Van Drivers
Just imagine not being able to drive to the doctor, pharmacy or grocery store whenever you needed. When an elderly person is unable to drive or without transportation, they must rely on others. Fortunately, the Health Resource Centers in Grimes, Leon, Madison and Burleson counties have vans for volunteer drivers to provide this service, but more volunteer drivers are needed. If 30 volunteers would drive just one day a month, 12 times a year, the staff at the Health Resource Center would be able to schedule rides for everyone needing transportation. Giving a day a month to serve as a volunteer driver is a great way to honor the memory of a parent or family member who gave their time to help others. Volunteer Ombudsman
Ombudsman Volunteers with the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging work objectively with residents and nursing home staffs; are compassionate and love working with seniors; and are willing to advocate for residents, many who have no family. As volunteer Ombudsmen, you will serve as advocates for residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights, and assisting them in resolving concerns. Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment, are assigned to a home and asked to visit residents at least once weekly. Free comprehensive training is provided. Certified volunteer ombudsmen receive 34 hours of initial certification training from a professional staff of ombudsman, completes a 3-month internship, and 12 hours of continuing education per year.
