January EPIPHANY is one of the most ancient Christian feasts. It celebrates on January 6 (Jordan) and is dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ and the accompanying events: Ascension of the Lord and Worship of the Magi. On this day, wherever there is a water basin, the ritual throwing of the cross from the local church takes place. After the removal of the cross, a solemn liturgy, called Great Water, was held. It renews the holy water in the temples. Everybody brings it home. It protects against diseases and purifies the soul. Keep the whole year for hard times in the family if someone falls ill. BABINDEN (The Day of the baba or the Day of the midwife) is a traditional Bulgarian feast, celebrated on 8 January (21 January according to the Gregorian calendar), in honour of the women practicing midwifery. The traditional word for midwife in Bulgarian is baba, same as grandmother. The holiday has pagan origins and is part of the traditional family rituals.

We had potato salad, pizza, cake and biscuits. At midnight we went out and lit fireworks and shot some skyrockets. It was so wonderful! Happy New Year- Frohes Neues Jahr!
Jan 1: New Year Jan 6: Epiphany Jan 8: Back to school Jan 31: school reports Jan 2 and Jan 20: birthdays of classmates
On January 1st, most people are tired from the New Year´s Eve party. Only people in Southern Germany celebrate Epiphany. Christmas/winter holidays are over and we all go back to school. Everybody works hard, because at the end of January, we will get our half-term school reports. Then we have a short break of two days and we can relax. Usually the weather is bad, it rains a lot, but we do not have so much snow, only in some years. Oh, yes, Bundesliga is back! And it´s the start of the OWL.
January The Three Wise Men It’s celebrated on the 6th of January. Children find gifts and they think the Three Wise Men have left these gifts for them in their house. People get presents in the morning if they have behaved well during the previous year. Of course, everybody did. On the previous night we have parades where the three wise men throw candies to children who then collect these candies. These parades symbolise the arrival of the Three Wise Men - Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar to the city where Jesus was born. They represent Arabia, Africa and Europe. After that, we drink hot chocolate and eat a special cake. The name of this cake is roscon de los reyes, it is a ring-cake that is decorated to look like a crown that a king would wear. It is often topped with glazed fruits, representing the jewels on a crown. Inside there is a small figurine. The person who finds it is said to have good luck for the year.
February On February 14, Bulgarians celebrate Trifon Zarezan - one of the oldest customs in the Bulgarian folk calendar. Trifon Zarezan is the patron saint of the winemakers. This is a labor custom associated with the first year of the vines processing - the spring incision. This means the cutting of the unnecessary branches at the beginning of February. People gather in the vineyards outside the villages. When the work is done, they meet and have a traditional meal. They sing songs, drink wine and dance, celebrating Saint Trifon and the end of the winter.
February Valentine’s Day 14.2. It is a friend’s day in Finland, not just a day of the lovers. You can remember your friend by giving a small gift, for example chocolate, a card or flowers. Valentine’s day colors are usually pink and red. The symbol of the day is a red heart. Shrove Tuesday 13.2. On Shrove Tuesday we eat pea soup and shrove buns, that are filled with whipped cream and jam. Outdoor activities are also popular. We slide on the hill.
February The days will become longer and the sun will start shining more often – hopefully. At the end of February we will start our second internship. Our first one was in class 8. We will all go to different companies and learn about a job we want to do later - maybe. We can find out if the job is OK for us or not. “I will do my internship in a kindergarten. I would like to play with kids and speak with them. A classmate will also spend the three weeks in a kindergarten. He does not really want to become a kindergarten teacher, but he wanted something different from the last job placement. Two classmates want to find out about the job of a social worker. Two of the girls will be in a hospital. They want to find out if the job as a nurse is the right one for them. Another girl will find out about the work of a medical assistant, others will work in retail. One girl will do her internship in a bookshop, one of the boys at a hairdresser´s.” I will do an internship as an industrial management assistant. I think that I will learn to plan and to organize. There is also another classmate in the same firm, but he will learn about the job industrial mechanic. Other classmates learn about similar jobs: mechatronic, car mechatronics technician, cutting machine operator or milling cutter and turner. I

Carnival
฀Carnival originates from a Roman celebration. We celebrate this
festival before entering Lent. We wear costumes and masks and have a great time and a lot of fun. There are a lot of parades and contests, for example the election of a carnival queen. There are music competitions between groups on stage or in the streets. ฀The largest fiestas are found in Cadiz and Tenerife. You can follow them on TV. The carnival in Tenerife is even compared to the carnival in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The carnival Cadiz is famous for the music and songs. The lyrics are satirical make fun of well-known people, from pop stars to politicians. Carnival ends with The "Burial of the Sardine", Entierro de la sardina. This is a carnival parade that parodies a funeral procession and in the end a symbolic figure, usually a representation of a sardine, is burnt. Now carnival is really over.
March On March 8th we celebrate International Women’s Day. Men respect their wives, girlfriends, moms, and co-workers by giving them small gifts or flowers. Minna Canth’s day (and also equality day) is on March 19th. It’s about this Finnish writer’s birthday (1884-1897). She wrote plays, novelettes and short stories. She was the first remarkable Finnish playwright and prose writer. She also represented women’s position by doing work to get girls better opportunities to go to school.

In the evening in the square in front of the National Assembly, there is a solemn fire-check to the monument of Tsar Liberator - Alexander II. The citizens place wreaths and flowers on the monument of the Russian, Finnish and Romanian soldiers who died for the liberation of Bulgaria.
March On the last weekend in March the time is changed to summer time, which means that we have to move our clocks and watches one hour forward. There is no special day for us in this month. Sometimes Easter is in March, sometimes in April. So I describe Easter. I celebrate Easter with my family. We go to the church and listen to the service. Most people celebrate Easter in Germany like that: we have colorful eggs, chocolate bunnies and bonfires in the evening before Easter Sunday. House, home and garden are cleaned, it is called “Frühjahrsputz”, spring cleaning. We Germans have some Easter traditions One tradition is to blow eggs and paint them in many colors and patterns, We hang them as a decoration on a bunch of twigs. Some people other hang colourful plastic eggs in the branches of trees or bushes in front of their house. Before Easter Sunday morning, some parents put the eggs into a basket for the Easter bunny and hide them. Others put them on a plate for a nice Easter breakfast. On the morning of Easter Sunday, the children go hunting for the eggs. The Easter bunny has also left chocolate eggs and Easter presents for them. And of course we all have a two weeks´ Easter holiday.

April EASTER is the day when Christians celebrate the Resurrection of the Son of God Jesus Christ. It is on the third day after Christ is crucified and buried. The empty tomb is seen by the women of the peacemakers who visited the grave. Then Jesus Christ appears to Mary Magdalene and then to the apostles. LAZAROVDEN i is a Christian holiday named after St. Lazarus. The name Lazar is a symbol of health and longevity. Lazarus was a friend of Jesus Christ. When he died, four days after his death he was resurrected. God says "Lazarus, go out!" And revives Lazar, who comes out of his tomb. Lazarovden is celebrated on the eighth day before Easter. Because Easter is set in the lunar calendar, not the sunny, Lazarovden falls every year on a different date, but always on Saturday. On this day, the custom of Lazarus is performed. Young women called "lasars" pick up flowers for the gums that will entwine for the Palm Sunday (the next day). The girls are dressed in traditional folk costumes. They walk around the houses of the village, sing ritual songs of the song and bless for health, happiness and joy. The owner of the house donates them with eggs, money, fruits and small gifts. In the past of Lazarovden the village boys have asked for the hand of their chosen one. The holiday brings a spring mood and is eagerly awaited by both the participants and the residents and guests of the villages and towns. It was believed that a girl who did not marry could not get married. Therefore, it was obligatory for every girl in the village to marry.
April The April Fools’ Day April Fools’ Day is an annual celebration in some European and Western countries commemorated on April 1st by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called “April fools”. Some newspapers, magazines and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.
Mikael Agricola’s Day Mikael Agricola’s day, Finnish Day, is celebrated in Finland on 9th April. This is a well-established flagging date. The day is celebrated on the day of death of Mikael Agricola, although usually the honor of the person is flagged on this birthday. The reason for this is that Agricola’s exact date of birth is unknown. Mikael Agricola’s Day came to the calendar in 1960, and since 1980 it has also been marked as a flagging day, as it was already established. In 1978, Agricola’s day was supplemented by the Finnish Language Day.
April
. On April 1st is April Fools´ Day and you play some funny tricks on your friends or siblings. You say ,” Oh, look, there ´s a spot on your new pullover”, the person is a bit shocked and looks at once, but of course, there is nothing. Or you might say, “Look, you forgot to fix your shoe lace!”, but everything is OK. I found out that in the USA April is also the National Humor Month.. People meet and invite a comedian from a local comedy club to entertain people who live in the neighbourhood, or maybe they tell their own jokes. Spring has arrived and it is time to work a bit in the garden, e.g. to plant herb and flowers. In some cities there is the so-called spring cleaning. Volunteers, school classes or sports teams collect all the rubbish from the ground.Children like to play outside now, the playgrounds are crowded and young people enjoy spring season activities like cycling or skateboarding. In the evening of April 30th, there are many parties and people dance into May.

The second Sunday in May is Mother´s day, and we also give our moms flowers or little presents, we prepare the breakfast and take over all housework. Father´s Day is celebrated on the same day as Ascension Day. On this day many men meet with their friends, go on a little excursion and have fun. Pentecost is a day on which Christians celebrate the holy spirit of God. Its symbol is a white dove. This day is 40 days after Easter. When the weather is good, the public outdoor swimming pools open and we also start our grilling season. A tradition in some towns and villages is to plant a May tree.

June
International Children's Day is on June 1. In Bulgaria, it became popular after
1949, when Moscow announced that June 1 was considered an International Day for the Protection of Children. In the countries with communist regimes, the holiday is officially called the International Day for the Protection of Children. Almost no political coloration was given to his celebration. Following the change of the political system in these countries, the holiday is preserved. This day is one of the most preserved holidays for children. 2 June-The day of Botev and those who died for the freedom and independence of Bulgaria is celebrated annually in Bulgaria on the day of Hristo Botev's death. It was first celebrated in Vratsa and Plovdiv in 1884. June June is a month with no public holidays, sometimes Pentecost, when Easter was late. In June is the longest day of the year, but this is not celebrated in our region.
My June is always busy. You have to try and work hard in school for good marks, because we will have our school reports at the end of this month. It is also the time for oral examinations for pupils in grade 10. Summer holidays are early this year, but the dates are changing every year – in other years holidays start in July or even August. In our country summer holidays always last six weeks. I hope that the weather is good enough to go swimming, either in a public swimming pool or in a lake.
June Hogueras de San Juan - Saint John’s bonfires We celebrate it on the 24th of June. Traditionally, we burn old furniture and clothes. Nowadays, artists build these sculptures made of cardboard. At night, we jump over the fire. The fire is a symbol to get rid of all the bad things. Bonfires were originally part of an agricultural pagan ritual on June 21, the longest day of the year. The Hogueras de San Juan celebrated in Alicante, for example, were first mentioned in 1822. It was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

According to the people's beliefs, if on this day they rumble, walnuts and hazelnuts will be hollow and rotten. The folk tradition calls on this day not to work, in order not to be angry St. Elijah, who is revered as master of the summer celestial elements, thunder and hailstorms. In Ilinden are made kurban for health, and large community gatherings and celebrations are organized. Everything is in you: time, indifference, life, nature, the fatherland and humanity, the seed of the largest, the least. In fact, hang on yourself, remember what you want, the road is made, the number put, mountain rising: freedom.
July German summer holidays last 6 weeks. A lot of Germans fly to Spain because throughout the year the weather in Germany is rather bad. Others go and see their families who live in other countries, e.g. Turkey. Those who stay often go swimming when the sun is shining. But temperatures of more than 25° are very rare. We are happy when it does not rain so often. Some spend their time with their family, others mostly with their friends. They eat ice-cream, go shopping, ride their bikes.Sometimes we get together to have a slumber party, we eat crisps, drink coke, watch movies, go outside in the dark and stay awake for long. You are lucky when you are born in July, the days are longer than the days in winter, it does not rain and you can party outside. It is complicated to visit your family in Germany, because each federal state has holidays at different times, in Bavaria summer holidays always start late and they have some extra holidays.
July The Moors and the Christians We celebrate that the Christians conquered Spain. We have parades and we perform battles. The costumes and the music are beautiful. People meet in venues to get dressed and they have parties.
The Spanish occupation by the Moors began in 711 AD The Moors came from North Africa and many of them were of Berber ancestry. They came to what is now Spain and Portugal. They had a very big influence on the culture of these countries. Christian Kingdoms of Medieval Spain fought against them. This is called the Reconquista. When Granada was captured in 1492, the last Muslim ruler gave his kingdom to Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, the Catholic kings (los Reyes Católicos). On the picture you see the Alhambra, the castle of Granada.
August Throughout the summer there are many folklore festivals. One of them takes place in the Rhodope Mountains, the Gela Bagpipe Festival. It lasts for one weekend and is is the biggest and most popular bagpipe music contest in Bulgaria. Thousands of people listen to musicians from all over the country.Bagpipers from Japan, Holland, Hungary, France, and Great Britain have participated, too. The festival lasts for a weekend. The aim of the festival is to keep authentic Rhodope folklore alive. August 15-The Great Mother of God is one of the greatest Christian feasts, celebrated equally by Orthodox, Catholic and other Christian denominations. This day is dedicated to the death of God's mother or to her success. According to the tradition of this day, the apostles gathered from the places where they preached to forgive the Holy Mother and buried her purified body.
August August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and the fifth of seven months to have a length of 31 days. The Gregorian calendar is most widely used in the world today. The Julian calendar was replaced because it did not properly reflect the actual time it takes the Earth to circle once around the sun. In Finland, the new school year will begin in August. Blockfest is in Tampere in August. It is the biggest hip hop event in the Nordic countries. In 2017 it was celebrated for the 10th time.
Duck hunting begins August 20th.
August While many countries in Europe still enjoy summer holidays we are back to school. For us in the north of Germany the new term starts in August. New doors open and you have a new opportunity to work well to ensure a good school report and a good future. A new time table, maybe new teachers, new chances, especially for pupils who have to redouble a class. This month one of our classmates will celebrate his birthday
A new term means a new chance to show your teachers that you have changed and that you can work hard to improve your grades. It might be easier with new teachers, because there are no bad experiences and they hopefully trust you - if you learn and if you respect the rules. So here we go again and all of us must work hard to get a good school leaving certificate at the end of this term.
Some are sad and remember great holidays, others felt bored and look forward to school and to meet their friends more often, but our next term will be tough.
Families of Islamic belief will celebrate the Feast of Sacrifice this month.
August
In August
we have a lot of music festivals, for example the Arenal Sound in Castellón, the Low Festival in Benidorm, BBK in Bilbao, and others. Top acts of the BBK are Gorillaz, The Chemical Brothers and The XX, and there are Alt-J, David Byrne, Florence + The Machine, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and many more. The Low Festival is celebrated the tenth time this year.
Most of them play electronic and indie music. Many important bands and people (influencers) attend these festivals.

September Six of us will celebrate a birthday, mostly of friends or family members.
The gamers among us look forward to the release of a new Fortnite and a new FIFA edition.
In this month there are some local festivities in our area, mostly combined with open shops on Sunday, village parades, a fun fair, parties and fireworks in the evening. Celebrations related to the harvest mostly take place in October.
My father´s birthday is in September, he turned 38 last year. He does not really celebrate it, especially when he is on a business trip. His secretary baked a chocolate cake for him last year. I found out that September 13th is the national fortune cookie day in the USA. This is the day when the fortune cookie was invented in Japan. I never celebrated it, but I am planning to eat at least one fortune cookie on that day. If I find the recipe, I will bake some myself. Someone in Germany invented “Pech-Kekse” (bad luck-cookies). This cookies are black with sinister messages inside, and they are meant for people with a darker humour. You can buy them for yourself or give them to a friend as a gift - hopefully he or she will not be angry….
Autumn starts and that means that we might have strong winds. Children enjoy it, because they fly their kites.
Well, class tests ahead…..
September The Virgin of Remei festival in Monóvar We celebrate the patron saint of our town and we have processions. There are special venues with music and there are a lot of people who run in front of a small cow in a bullring. We dress in traditional costumes, we eat the typical food and there are fireworks the whole day.
October Dimitrovden is a folk and Orthodox holiday celebrated on October 26 in memory of Saint Dimitar of Thessaloniki. He was born in Thessaloniki in the 3rd century, and his father was then the mayor of the city. After his death, Emperor Maximilian Herkul assigned this post to Dimitar, who was received with great joy and honor. As the governor of Thessaloniki, Dimitar openly professes and praises the Christian faith. Disappointed by his behavior, Emperor Galerius threw him into prison. Before convicting him, soldiers entered his cell and killed him with a spear during prayer. Then the Christian church proclaimed him a martyr of faith and a saint, and the inhabitants of Thessaloniki began to honor him as the patron saint of the city.
In former times, when most of the people worked as farmers, Dimitrovden marked the beginning of winter in Bulgaria, as harvesting was over.Like in other European countries, daylight savings time ends at the last weekend of October.
October Aleksis Kivi was a Finnish author who wrote the first significant novel in the Finnish language, Seven Brothers (Finnish title: Seitsemän veljestä). October
In October, there is the Harvest
festival in many places. This year it takes place on 7th October. Many people celebrate in churches or at home with their uncles, aunts and grandparents. As a decoration there are many fruits and vegetables
October is a very important month. In Bremen there is a big fun fair, the Freimarkt. This market has a long tradition. The first one was in the year 1035. The city of Bremen got the right to have a market outside the city walls. Today you can go on rides in carousels, dodgem cars, roller coasters or other attractions. Many people from Northern Germany, but also tourists visit the Freimarkt (free market). You can go shopping and buy many thing, fashion jewelry, caps, scarves, household goods, you can eat local and international snacks like roasted sausage, pizza, Asian food and drink. On the first and the last evening the sky is full of fireworks.
In October we have autumn holidays. Last year I was with my family in Turkey, and we also
met my Mum´s sister and her children. They had come from Russia. It was so cool and I had a lot of fun. We often swam in the sea and in the pool. It was really hot, 30° C. In the evening my cousin and I celebrated in a disco. In Germany you must be at least 16 years old, then you can stay in a disco until 22 pm. Next October we will go on a class trip to Berlin. At the end of this month it has become a tradition to celebrate Halloween, I find it scary. Children dress in costumes like witches or vampires and go from house to house. They ring the bell and when someone opens, they say “ Süßes oder Saures” which means “Tríck or treat”. So you give them some sweets or they play a trick on you.
October Columbus Day
We celebrate it on the 12th of October. It is the national day of Spain,
the Fiesta Nacional de España, and also a national holiday.
We celebrate that Columbus discovered America on October 12, 1492. Columbus Day is also celebrated on the American continent, in the United States and in Latin-American countries. The day was known as Dia de la Hispanidad, Hispanidad means the international Spanish community. Spanish is spoken in South America, so we have a common culture. Columbus landed on the island, Hispaniola, today the Bahamas. He was the first European to do so. What he really wanted to do was to find a quicker route to Asia from Europe - but instead he discovered America.

The Swedish language is important, because Finland was part of Sweden for 700 years. It is spoken by many famous persons, e.g. the Finland-Swedish author and artist Tove Jansson who created The Moomintrolls.
● On 4th of November is All Saints` Day. It is a Christian martyrs and dead persons commemoration day. That day we go to graveyards and put candles on our close people´s graves. ● ●
In Finland we also celebrate the day of Swedish Culture on 6th of November. On 12th of November it is Father's Day and of course it is celebrated all over the world. That day we spend time with our family and celebrate our fathers.
November November in Germany is a so-called quiet month. On November 1st, people of Catholic belief celebrate the All Saint´s Day. On November 9th, people remember the Night of Broken Glass, Reichskristallnacht, in 1938, which was a pogrom against the Jews all over Nazi Germany. The name Kristallnacht comes from all the broken glass in the streets, because the windows of shops of Jewish owners, houses where Jewish people lived, and synagogues were smashed and burnt. The Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 is another event which we remember in our country. It was the beginning of the process of reunification in Germany.Other silent Sundays are the National Day of Mourning and the Sunday of the Dead when people commemorate family members who died and the soldiers who lost their lives in WW1 and WW2. Only after the quiet Sundays Christmas markets are allowed to open. My sister´s birthday is i No e ber. As prese t s she got a e laptop a d e clothes. Every Sunday we light one more candle on the Advent wreath. One of my traditions is to eat waffles at least once in December. Children love to have an Advent calendar, they open the first door on December 1st and find some chocolate. On the 6th, I place my boot in front of my door and hope for small presents or chocolate. I hold on to this tradition even as a teen. Many families go to the Christmas market and buy presents or enjoy the food. I usually go there with my father and urge him to go on a carousel ride with me. We celebrate Christmas on the 24th. After we had eaten, we are allowed to open our presents. I often play Christmas songs on the piano and we sing (badly) together. December 25th, families go and see each other, and mostly you have a festive meal. On December 26th, you relax. On December 28, shops start selling fireworks and people look forward to New Year´s Eve. Most people spend the evening with family and friends, maybe you have Raclette for dinner, and at midnight you clink the glasses and go out into the street to greet your neighbours and enjoy the fireworks or light some yourself. We wish each other, “ Ein frohes Neues Jahr!” - Happy New Year!
