Once upon a time‌
Grandma; Oh, come on, Tom, it´s time to switch off the TV and go to bed. Tom: Yes, okay, but then you must tell me a story, because your stories are the best! Grandma: Oh, I don’t know, I have told you these myths so many times. Today I will tell you a true story. Tom: Wow, that sounds great! Grandma: Ok, let me tell you about the time when I was a young girl…….
It was a long time ago, when I was still a young girl. My family and I lived in a little, broken house, offside from the city. When it was raining, the water flew in our house and when it was windy, objects from our household flew away. When we were ill, we couldn’t send for the doctor, because we didn’t have enough money.
It was hard to live in this country, we had a bad king. Our country was in a bad situation. The most of the people were poor, a lot of them were also ill and they didn’t have a job, so they didn‘t have anything. We couldn´t live a normal life.
It was a standard for us to starve, children couldn‘t go to school, many people died. We could only survive with fish we caught in the rivers and vegetables we could grow on very small pieces of land.
The king had a good life. He could eat whatever he wanted, he had a warm house and all the jobs, for example cooking or cleaning the rooms, were done by other people. He wasn’t interested in us and he did not notice how bad the situation for his folk really was.
One day, the king had been very ill for four years, he did his last breath of air. He died. During all his lifetime, even when he was young, he never wanted to split his regime with anyone. That was the reason, why the king didn’t have a wife and children. There was no successor. We, the folk, were alone.
Then, after a long time, a stranger came into our country. He was a young, attractive and clever man. Everyone was able to see that he was not from here. All people were very skeptical because we did not have many visitors.
One day he announced that he was our new king. Everybody was scared by this information. They asked: “What will happen when he is a bad men like his forerunner?.
But the situation turned out differently from what we had thought. He was a kind man who was interested in the well-being of his nation. First of all he cared for the poor people. He gave them food and a job. Many people were able to work in his house. I also worked in his house. During this time I got to know him better. This was great, because he was so nice and friendly to me.
And it did not take long until we fell in love.
His next good deed was to give every child the chance to go to school. Everybody in the country was content.
One day our king said that everyone had to assemble on the market place. After a little time there was a big crowd.
Angelo went on a tribune and began to speak.
“My lovely people, today is the day on which everything will change. We will build a democratic country. It will be a hard way but I´m looking forward to this. Each of you is allowed to speak freely and to change something.
My final act as your president is that I give you one week to choose someone who will be your new president. One week later the new president was chosen. Since today Angelo Mertel is one of the most famous and most important kings in our country. We are happy that he was such a good man.
Well, and this is the end of my story.
Grandpa: Greta, don’t tell Tom your myths! Tom: This wasn´t a myth, it was a true story, but can you tell me what became of Angelo Mertel? How did his life go on? Grandma : He married an employee who worked for him in the castle and now he lives happily and content with his wife and his grandson. I have even got a picture of him! *Picture is shown!* Tom: Grandpa, but that’s you!!
