BALI 42ND AWARD WINNERS SPECIAL
ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS OF THIS YEARS’ BALI NATIONAL LANDSCAPE AWARDS
With the awards ceremony fast approaching, 67 BALI members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) have now been informed they have won a BALI National Landscape Award, with some members successful in more than one category. This year’s Awards, which are now run in-house by the BALI team at Landscape House, sees 101 National Awards made by the adjudication panel, which is chaired by landscape consultant and former senior lecturer in landscape studies at Writtle College, Greg Allen. Following a summer of visiting every entry, Greg and his team of judges – John Melmoe, Richard Barnard, Jason Lock, Robin Templar Williams, Steve Roberts, Andrew Legg and Mick Callahan – met at BALI Landscape House in late August for the adjudication process that selects the award-winning schemes. Judges Madge Moore, Peter Jennins OBE and Nick Coslett also put forward their recommendations for the Affiliate Exceptional Service awards and the Employer Excellence awards, which were subsequently considered by the wider
panel. Deliberations over the 127 entries took three days, at the end of which the list of winners was confirmed. Reflecting on this year’s process, Greg said: “What a difference this year’s magnificent summer has made to the judges’ task of visiting the BALI Awards entries, albeit a real challenge for BALI members faced with drought conditions in many parts of the country. Keeping their schemes looking at their best for judging has certainly called on every ounce of their horticultural expertise! “We have been delighted with the achievements of BALI contractors and designers this year and, as always, the hardest task has been to stick to our stringent criteria and only reward real excellence across the board. In previous years this approach has inevitably resulted in disappointment for a percentage of members who, although justly proud of their schemes, had yet to achieve
the exemplary standard required by the BALI Awards. This year, however, 77 per cent of entries receive an award, which speaks volumes for the incredibly high standards BALI members are now achieving. We offer our very sincere congratulations to those who have attained that level and are on our list of winners, and would encourage those who have not been successful this year to strive again next year to make the list and experience the thrill and satisfaction of winning a BALI National Landscape Award.” BALI’s Chief Executive, Wayne Grills, added: “The standard of entries this year has been really spectacular, indicating that private, commercial and public clients are prepared to invest in quality to achieve the schemes they want. Our members have delivered on a grand scale. They have used the latest techniques, technology and materials to push the boundaries in terms
of solving the design, construction and maintenance challenges presented by budget constraints and climatic conditions. “The Awards also give us the opportunity to recognise both BALI Affiliate members who constantly deliver outstanding customer service, and companies from across the BALI membership who are exemplars in terms of their responsibilities as employers. I am always in awe of our members’ achievements and offer my very sincere congratulations to every one of this year’s winners.” BBC Breakfast anchor and sports journalist Dan Walker will host the ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London, on Friday, 7 December when the winners of the Principal and Special Awards, and the coveted Grand Award, will be announced. Full details of the winning entries can be found at baliawards.co.uk along with booking details for the Awards Ceremony.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS AND AWARD WINNING STANDARDS OF WORKMANSHIP Designing and building gardens and landscapes from concept to completion with a passion and dedication like no other. Garden Club London is a nationally acclaimed and recognised provider of gardens for home, gardens for work, roof gardens, landscaping contracting, and international landscape design. Known for combining innovative designs with quality-driven processes and integration of the client in every stage of the project experience, the company is positioned as a provider of choice for organisations with specific or demanding garden needs, requirements, or specifications. Although a growing company, Garden Club London is a rapidly growing company which brings big ideas to a market where innovative and inspiring ideas can make all the difference. The organisation has worked with a number of leading clients already, each proud to associate the company’s name with the garden as clear recognition of the excellent work provided. These projects also span across the full spectrum of garden types, including both domestic and commercial clients with vastly different requirements – the one common strand being, the sheer importance of quality workmanship and professionalism which the company provides. Where Garden Club London really stands out amongst key competitors in the clear attention which is paid towards the client. Understanding the growing need for customers to be actively involved and informed on each stage of a project, the organisation works hard to help clients feel involved and up to date on progress throughout the project. This sees an effective pairing of communication with consultation, advisory notes from the organisation’s own technical expertise, and also follow-up care to ensure complete client satisfaction across the board. Indeed, consultation is one of the key elements of the organisation’s service. By working with clients, the company aims to deliver designs which not only meet the aspirations of the customer, but also do so in a way which can maximise the opportunity available to them and make oft-ambitious ideas into practical and innovative realities. All of this is done with budgeting in mind to ensure that clients can bring their dreams to life within predicted budgets and therefore minimise any concerns over delays, scheduling, or lengthy project extensions.

As the organisation explains: “Our award winning garden design service is entirely client focussed – we take your brief and work with you to design a garden that maximises the potential of your outside space and fulfils your requirements. We will then give you an itemised estimate of costs to complete the work using our in house landscape team or for larger projects tender the garden build to a dedicated and trusted pool of contractors to provide you with the best value and appropriate scheduling. When the dirty work is complete, our in house team of horticulturists and finishers will plant and make the finishing touches. You will know exactly what your design fees will be before you commission us and when the design is agreed, we’ll stick with you all of the way to completion to keep the project on time and on budget.”

Serving as testament to the organisation’s ability to deliver leading solutions to its clients, Garden Club London has also been successful in the renowned and respected BALI Awards. This has seen the organisation come away with a BALI National Landscape Award for the Floating Pocket Park project with European Land and Property at Merchant Square. Open to the public all year round, the square has been recognised as an iconic addition to the green spaces of London and serves as a clear showcase of the excellent and professional designs provided by the company. Indeed, the success in the awards also showcases the company as amongst the elite in leading landscaping designs. In addition to successes in the BALI Awards, Garden Club London was also awarded an RHS Gold Medal as best in category for
its show garden, Urban Flow. A modem urban garden, the designed space served to showcase sustainable and water-conscious messages alongside clear elegance and strong design aesthetics. Once again, the success in the award helps to showcase the superior standards purported by Garden Club London in both the design and build of leading gardens. Looking to the future, we can only expect to see Garden Club London to continue thriving within the market as the demand for green spaces and gardens continually rises. As people and organisations alike increasingly recognise the value which such spaces can add to their assets and personal experience, we can only expect to see this big-thinking company to rise to the challenges presented by the modern customer and achieve incremental success in the coming years.

BALI AWARD GETS NEW CHAPTER OFF TO A FLYING START Grace Landscapes Begins A New Chapter In Its History After Being Acquired by Nurture Group
Grace Landscapes, which is now part of Nurture Group, signed off its 40-year history with another prestigious BALI award for its work at the National Memorial Arboretum’s Heroes’ Square and Boyes Garden. Situated in Staffordshire, on the edge of the National Forest, the site is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance. Its maturing woodland landscape is home to more than 300 memorials, which commemorate fallen soldiers and members of the emergency services, alongside charity and civilian organisation tributes. Tens of thousands of plants were supplied to the National Memorial Arboretum including a mixture of shrubs and herbaceous varieties, where Grace Landscapes partnered with landscape architect Andy Webster of Fira. The project, which triumphed in the BALI awards’ non-domestic Soft Landscaping Construction category for works under £300k utilises a sensitive selection and detailing of natural materials, textures and colours to enhance the visitor experience. The planting scheme incorporates perennial mixes designed to provide seasonal interest. Quercus palustris was selected as the principal tree for its autumn colour and form. As there is a 2m change in levels across the scheme a gently sloping path with a mixture of sensory plants sweeps through The Boyes Garden in order to maintain DDA compliance. Ricky Whiteman, Head of Estimating (North), who has transitioned from Grace to the construction division of Nurture under the Gavin Jones brand, said the latest BALI award was further testament to the enduring standards of Grace Landscapes. Those standards – and an ability of meet or exceed client expectation – will be complemented by the scale of Nurture Group, enabling the business to build upon its already enviable reputation.

BALI 42ND AWARD WINNERS SPECIAL NURTURE GROUP The striking project was a fitting way for the multi BALI award-winning company to sign-off its 40-year history. Established in 1978, Grace Landscapes has offered a comprehensive and professional service including construction, maintenance and design and build over the years. Its aim has always been to work with clients to provide a scheme that meets specification and expectations, is affordable but of a quality that the company was proud to put its name to. During the last four decades Grace became known for its specialism in high quality construction, and maintenance schemes and has achieved national recognition including four Principal and 16 BALI Awards. During this time it became a 9001 QMS and 14001 EMS accredited business and possessed Safecontractor / ContractorPlus, CHAS, Achilles, and Constructionline certifications. This success made it an attractive proposition for Nurture Group. Based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, Grace has regional depots in the North East, North West and the Midlands so fit perfectly into Nurture’s North Region, run by regional director Nick Hills. The Mirfield depot will remain as will most of the 116 staff, thus ensuring clients receive continuity of service without any disruption. The majority of the Grace portfolio is made up of corporate clients with a small amount of housing and winter gritting, which is currently outsourced. Winter gritting was not a standard service offered by Grace, so Nurture will look at implementing this to the whole of the Grace client base through the established Winter Gritting team. Having built the business up from scratch, founder Tim Grace was reluctant to sell to a large FM company knowing that Grace would lose the family ethos and the quality it had built up over the years. Selling to Nurture seemed the perfect solution, however. Even though Nurture has grown into an acclaimed national contractor, it retains the ideals of a family business, with 18% of the company still owned by its staff. As of January 1st 2019, Grace is officially operating under the Nurture banner.
