Several Spring Island Equestrian members recently made a visit to Daufuskie Island for a tour of the Island and to visit and learn more about the State of South Carolina’s state horse: the Marsh Tacky. The southern tip of Daufuskie Island is the most southern place in the State of South Carolina and is the location of the Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Society. The first Marsh Tacky horses were originally brought over from Spain in the 1500’s by the Conquistadors looking to establish settlements here. They were left on the barrier islands to fend for themselves and were eventually domesticated by first Native Americans and then settlers from Europe. Valued for their intelligence, stamina, small size and their ability to adapt to the hot humid swampy marsh lands of the low country they were designated our South Carolina State Heritage Horse in 2010 for their historical contributions in agriculture, transportation and involvement in the wartime efforts over the years. With only 425 in existence today. The Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Society is the only organization established to preserve the breed and to promote the breed for their importance to the South Carolina’s history, heritage and culture. The trip to Daufuskie was a very educational one bringing the importance of the Marsh Tacky breed to our attention. We urge everyone to make the ferry journey across to experience the history of the island of Daufuskie and their Marsh Tacky’s.
The Spring Island Barn has once again become the ideal nesting place for 17 pairs of barn swallows for the next several weeks. Last year, we were lucky enough to house 22 pairs of barn swallows until their young hatched. Barn swallows are small birds with beautiful blue and brownish-red feathers. Fun fact: the males have more bold colors than the females. They are a common species in North American during their breeding season. They build nests under shelters that are usually manmade, such as the rafters of the barn. A nest usually consists of about 5 lightly colored eggs with brown spots. A few weeks after hatching, the young and their parents leave the nest and migrate south for the fall, then winter in South America, and return to Spring Island next breeding season.
Are you on the Island this summer and looking for something to do? Why not come to the Equestrian Center for a riding lesson or even an early morning or evening trail ride? It is the perfect activity to do to see more of the island and wildlife through a whole different perspective. Scheduling group or individual trail rides and lessons can be done to accommodate everyone interested in participating. All you have to do is give the barn a call or send Deryle an email explaining what you would like to do, when you would like to come, how many are participating, and experience if any. The Equestrian Center is fortunate to have qualified employees that can guide you on a trail ride where ever you would like across the island like Bonny Shore, Africa, Great Salt Pond, Shrimp Pond, the Ruins. We also offer 30- and 60-minute lessons for beginners to advanced riders. We can teach the basics such as being able to comfortably walk and control the horse to more advanced lessons such as trotting, cantering, pole work, or jumping. We are looking forward to seeing you at the barn this summer! Please visit the website or stop by if you have any questions.
For more information on lessons for all skill levels, contact Deryle Duncan: 843-987-4102, dduncan@springisland.com
GROUP TRAIL RIDES Our trail rides continue through the fall and winter with a different excursion each time. Ride your own horse or rent one from the Barn. It’s a great way to enjoy the island!

TIP FROM YOUR PRO DRIVER DISTANCE If you want more distance, your focus should be finding a rhythm that allows you to produce speed without giving up good contact. Finish the backswing is one of my favorite thoughts when hitting a driver or tee ball. You want to stay smooth and deliberate going back, let everything wind up behind the ball. Then you can come into impact from a strong position, not a weak position that's all hands and arms. Think about when you hit a bunch of drivers in a row on the range. You get into a good groove. Why? First, you're not reacting to all the obstacles you see on the course. Second, you don't have mechanical thoughts—you're just swinging. That's what you need to do when you play.
The Golf Shop, Golf House, and Old Tabby Links are closed on Tuesdays in the summer, reopening 7 days a week on October 15, 2019.
WEEKLY GOLF GROUPS *Through mid-October*
DIAL IN YOUR DRIVER What can you do when you practice to find a rhythm that creates speed and control? Tee three balls in a line, and hit them in succession, stepping up to the next ball as soon as you finish your swing. You'll instinctively know to stay in balance, so you won't overswing. Do this drill a few times, and try to really internalize the rhythm and flow of it. You'll hit more shots in the middle of the clubface and get the most out of the speed you're creating.
Sign up by 8:00 am on the day of play.

Vision and Direction: A Wellness-Centered Spring Island This September I will celebrate my 7th anniversary as the Director of the Recreation and Wellness program. I have often shared the honeymoon" joke with my clients, stating that "if the honeymoon phase of my marriage had lasted as long as the honeymoon phase with Spring Island, my life would have looked much different." With the bumps and turns of this past year, I am finding myself comparing this feeling of uncertainty to having the "seven-year itch." And no, I am not being romanced by another community—I have no desire to lower my standards after serving the most exceptional membership on the most beautiful property. I am merely re-establishing the vision and recalibrating the direction of the program. The destination is the very same as was pinned in 2012: a wellness-centered Spring Island. I arrived to an empty canvas in the fall of 2012. We pulled records of facility usage and noted that at that time, 42 families participated in programs at the Sports Complex. The previous Director served as the primary massage therapist, and the sole personal trainer and group instructor. The class schedule offered four to five classes weekly. I inherited an office assistant, a housekeeper, a yoga instructor, two massage therapists, and a fantastic facility packed full of new equipment. Fortunately, I interviewed with an eager Recreation Committee and Board of Directors, and I was hired by a General Manager who bought into my vision of moving beyond having a traditional fitness center and creating comprehensive wellness programs. By the spring of 2019, the Recreation and Wellness Department had grown to a staff of 17 contractors, three full-time positions, over 25 weekly classes, massage and aesthetic services, educational lectures, and various program and facility upgrades. The latest usage review revealed that more than 260 families now use the facility in some capacity, showing that the vision of a wellness-centered community has indeed been adopted. The program demands of today are far higher than those of even three years ago, yet the operation looks much the same. As an exercise physiologist, I have a calling to make people better; I have dedicated my financial and intellectual resources to establish myself in the wellness field. The volume of activity in previous years allowed for effective management of the programs and facilities while working with a full client load. Now that model that worked so well 7 years ago is facing challenges that come with success and growth and no longer works as effectively as it once did. To continue to build a successful and progressive program, I must look to the latest research trends as well as global demands, and present a vision that will lead into the next decade and beyond. The communities and clubs around the country that have done from good to great have continues to commit the energy and resources to promote progressive change that create exceptional member experiences and remain at the forefront of the wellness movement. We must do the same. The golf centered communities of the past are becoming wellness driven lifestyles, which include golf as an integral activity. An article written by Rina Raphael for Fast Company states that current research is showing that real estate buying trends are shifting from "leisure golf centers to wellness communities." The same study presented by the Global Wellness Institute cites that buyers are willing to pay a 10% to 25% premium for homes found in wellness centered communities. Acting on these real estate trends, sellers are outfitting and marketing properties with wellness as the primary object of desire. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal suggests that luxury real estate clients are acquiring properties which offer a wellness component, even when evidence may not support the efficacy of the modality. Today’s high-end buyers seem to understand that health and wellbeing is their primary asset, and they are willing to invest in building and maintaining that asset. Recent reports state that there are now over 350 wellness-centered communities in the development pipeline in the US; however, Spring Island was arguably one of the earliest such communities. We have the primary components in place—state of the art facilities, sustainable food sources, magical outdoor experiences, art therapies, and exceptional sport and movement programs. This renewed focus on direction includes expanding on the practices that we have in place to develop a disciplined multi-departmental approach to wellness and to broaden the significance of the wellness program as a hub. The Blue Zones Project, based on the study of five “Blue Zones” in which residents experience remarkable longevity, encourages community wellness by mining a collaboration between businesses and residents to promote involvement in nine aspects of healthy living. Large cities such as Fort Worth, Texas, are investing financial and human resources in creating a blueprint from which to develop more robust and more sustainable communities. Using this model, Spring Island can enjoy progressive movement by weaving together the fibers of the Food and Beverage services, the Visual and Performing Arts, and the outdoor sports programs, all of which influence a healthy mind and body, encouraging commitment to the same aspects of wellbeing. Over the summer, you will begin to see the preliminary steps that will allow us to refocus on the original vision. Staffing is my current priority; providing all current employees with appropriate training in service and practice is the primary outcome. Expanding services to provide alternatives to our current movement programs, we have opened virtual exercise classes and private Reformer instruction. We are currently in the vetting process of providing physical therapy on-site, which would provide clinical support to our highly skilled and educated floor staff. And while I can proudly say that we offer a wellness model that is unique to Spring Island and is far superior to the surrounding communities, I am personally committed to ushering the expansion and development of a more progressive community. Time does not stand still, and neither should the programs that we put into place.
