INSPIRATION TAKES ON MANY FORMS They say that artists see the completed sculpture in marble before they make their first mark. Conversely, some who work in paint, don’t know their own intentions, until the piece is done. When experiencing the masterpiece that is Pine Island, one wonders: did the land inspire the architecture, or was it the house seeking a home? There may be no answer to this question, but certainly one thing is true: this creation is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Architecture in harmony with its natural surroundings. Design that transcends trendiness. From landscape to craftsmanship to choice of materials and use of space, every detail is thoughtful, intentional, and an exquisite exercise in restraint.
WELCOME TO SPRING ISL AND Pine Island is crafted on a private 56-acre island located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry between Beaufort and Hilton Head. While set apart, Pine Island belongs to the larger collective that is Spring Island. A work of art in itself, Spring Island is luxury devoid of pretension. It promotes and protects a vibrant artist community, a productive and rewarding community farm, and multiple acres of undisturbed forests. As the owner of Pine Island, you’ll be welcomed into this community and enjoy access to amenities such as the equestrian center and Arnold Palmer golf course, as well as programs that include the “Trust Talks,” where nationally recognized scholars, artists, naturalists, environmentalists, historians and Trust staff are invited to present weekly. This community of like-minded individuals respects the land, promotes the arts and recognizes that there’s always more to learn.
NATURAL ...BY DESIGN The first thing you notice about the landscape of Pine Island is that it seems to be both undisturbed and intentional. It seems to naturally blend with the home and outdoor living spaces as if it grew up around it. Much of the island has been left in its natural state, purposely preserved to protect the inspiring landscape, with the only plantings being native species like bayberry and saw palmetto. From the home you will see a man-made sweetgrass meadow in one direction and, in the other, the expansive salt marsh and river beyond. This apparent simplicity was achieved by the dedicated team at the acclaimed landscape firm of Oehme van Sweden. Known for their work at the New York Botanical Garden, the Chicago Botanic Garden and a number of memorials in Washington, DC, this diverse group of landscape architects, horticulturalists and designers fuse art, science, and humanity to distill each landscape’s form and amplify its function.
A LIVING EXAMPLE OF ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE When you stare in wonder at the magnificence of this natural setting, the last thing you want to do is interrupt it. The vision for the architecture of the Pine Island home is to promote harmony between human habitation and the natural world. This has been achieved by the noted architecture firm William McDonough & Partners (known internationally for pioneering large scale sustainable projects and the Cradle to Cradle protocol). Through design approaches that aim to be sympathetic and well-integrated with a site, every detail of the architecture has become part of the unified, interrelated composition. This sophisticated home seamlessly blends Lowcountry vernacular with Japanese influences. Only one story in height, the design extends into the surrounding landscape with its unique shape, pool and terraces. Every detail of this dwelling, from the scale of each room and the height of each deck to the selection of fixtures, the planning of light, and the effortless interior-exterior flow exemplifies the nexus of craft and architecture in a way rarely seen anywhere in the world.
DE TAILS MAKE PERFECTION It’s challenging to think of the home and landscape at Pine Island as two separate entities, because so much planning and craftsmanship has been dedicated to the idea that they are harmoniously linked as one. From the river and the marsh through the woods and up the steps is a seemingly uninterrupted flow of excellence. Built of native American woods and sustainably harvested tropical hardwoods by local woodworkers at the height of their craft, the home is both richly detailed and simply rendered. The craftsmanship of the home’s interior has often been likened to that of a handmade boat. Not only for the selection of wood, but for the perfect arches and smooth lines, not to mention the obvious care and passion employed by the artisan to achieve such magnificent results.
