Over the last five (5) months, the world has changed around us as societies across the globe have struggled to combat the COVID-19 pandemic which has had significant disruptive effects on nearly all areas of society, including the planning, design, and operation of parks and public spaces. As landscape architects, we have a responsibility to be on the forefront of proactive changes to parks, especially those which may have the ability to mitigate death and disease. During this session, we will explore the prior eras of park planning and design in America, setting the foundation for where we are today. We will also spend time analyzing the different quantifiable impacts that parks departments and park programmers/operators have experienced as a result of COVID-19 including the increased spatial requirements associated with social distancing, increased usage and maintenance of parks and trails, and the challenges associated with virtual programming and funding.
