As a way of thanking you for your interest in seeing where your food is growing, we invite you to see firsthand the land and the animals. Our Maine farm families that work everyday growing food and fiber are anxious to meet you. The life journey from seed to final crop, from baby animal to maturity is played out each day on the farm and you’re invited to watch the action on Open Farm Day. This supplement features a complete listing of the Maine farms that will open their doors to you on July 22. Many farms have arranged for special educa-

tional programs so you can — depending on your host — see cheese being made, enjoy a wagon ride, pat the animals, tour a garden, learn about planting, see spinning demonstrations, pick some eggs, observe honeybees at work, feed the calves, tour a vineyard and so much more! Shop in the Gift Shops and at the Farm Stands, grab a bite to eat, or pack your own lunch and make a day of it with family and friends!

Share in the pride of Maine farmers as they show you how they grow their food. The broccoli, strawberries, pole beans, potatoes, cranberries, sweet corn, and blueberries (just to name a few) will all be

there growing, soon to be a feature in a nearby market. Buying local really does wonders for our community. It’s one thing to tell your children that food doesn’t grow on the supermarket shelf; it’s another to see it, touch it, and feel it first hand.

As farmers, we know that when the sun comes up each morning there will be something new and interesting on the farm. Our farmers are excited to share with you some of the same experiences that they experience every day.

Come join us on what we all hope will be a bright, not too warm, late-July day. See you on July 22!

Maine Agriculture in the Classroom enjoys great year, prepares for 2013 MAITC Mission Statement: “To promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resources among students, educators, and the general public” Maine Agriculture in the Classroom has had a very prosperous year. As a result of the Agriculture Specialty License Plate, over 48,000 Maine students received Agricultural Education programs this year, grants were distributed for $60,000 to Maine Schools and Education programs, and volunteers read and presented Ag books to over 600 classrooms across the state.

This year, the five-day MAITC Summer

Teachers Institute, awarding professional development and 3.6 CEU credits, will be held at the University of Southern Maine July 23-27. Armloads of curriculum, classroom activities, books and resources will be provided for participants. Two days of local farm tours will include dairy, oxen, fiber, and vegetable farms on-land, and a trip on Casco Bay to visit a Maine Mussel Farm.

Teachers will build worm composting bins for their classrooms, work with fiber, and network with other educators from across the state that are using agriculture as a teaching tool.

The 2012 MAITC Teacher of the Year, Erik Wade from Hope Elementary School, has been awarded the National AITC “Excellence in Teaching About Agricul-

ture” award sponsored by USDA and awarded on a trip to Colorado in June 2012. Erik will be sharing his program at the Institute as well as participating. Applications for 2013 are due on September 1, 2012. Teachers may apply or receive nominations from others. You can find the application on our Web site, www.MaineAgintheClassroom.org. The 2013 winner will travel, expenses paid, to Minneapolis, Minn. and the National AITC Conference there in June 2013.

Maine Agriculture in the Classroom 2012 Teacher of the Year Erik Wade from Hope Elementary School uses agriculture to teach math and science in grades six through eight. He has been awarded the National USDA “Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture” award.

Maine School Garden Network plans second School Garden Open House

The Maine School Garden Network is a group of volunteers that believes in the value of teaching children to grow, cook, and enjoy eating healthful food. Its vision is to see a garden at every school. Its mission is to encourage, support, educate, and connect those who wish to garden with youth.

MSGN’s board members and partners include educators, farmers, nutritionists, and landscapers.

They represent local and statewide organizations, including the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Maine Association of Conservation Districts, Healthy Maine Partnerships, the Maine Farm to School Network, Maine Agriculture in the Classroom, the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Department of Agriculture, and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

In addition to serving as a resource for teachers and other youth garden coordinators, MSGN sponsors local and regional events designed to highlight the importance of gardening with children and young people. In April it partnered with Maine Agriculture in the Classroom and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension to present another very successful

Maine School Garden Day, held this year at Buckfield Junior Senior High School. And in late September it will sponsor Maine’s second annual School Garden Open House.

This year’s School Garden Open House is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 29, in conjunction with Maine Harvest Lunch week (September 26-30.) Open House events will be held at schools and educational gardens across Maine to raise awareness of the myriad benefits of garden programs for youth.

Last year a dozen schools participated in the Open House and offered activities that included student-led garden tours, cider pressing, a compost workshop, garden art projects, gardenthemed games, and garden-sourced food samples.

This year there will also be opportunities to plant garlic for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s “Garlic for Good” project. All School Garden Open House events will be free and open to the public.

Open Farm Day is a wholesome, economical family adventure, a hayride of fun, and an event you won’t want to miss. As of press time, June 26, 112 farms across Maine plan to open their doors on Sunday, July 22 to offer the public the opportunity to learn about the bountiful business of agriculture.

This year marks the 23rd year of

celebrating Maine’s Open Farm Day. Farms around the state are committed and passionate about ensuring the sustainability of agriculture. Maine’s farms have given back to their communities by providing a forum for education and learning in a fun atmosphere.

With much to experience, this year’s Open Farm Day offers a chance

for you and your family to visit farms across the state. Visiting hours are generally 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., although some farms are extending their hours for special events. Many farms will have demonstrations, displays, farmraised products, and animals and crops to experience. Activities include barn and field tours, milking,

Orchard Hill Farm Stan and Gail Maynard , 507 Pratt Rd., Woodland Organic Beef Cattle OFD: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Home to 95 purebred Highland cattle. These long-horned, shaggy beasties — one of the world’s oldest breeds — are known for their hardiness and docile temperament. The Maynards market breeding stock and MOFGA-certified organic, grass-fed,

hayrides, petting zoos, nature trails, beautiful scenery, samples for tasting, and refreshments.

Many farms are handicapped accessible and, have restrooms, and can handle group or bus tours.

They’re indicated with their hours as HA (handicapped accessible), RR

grass-finished beef. Visitors will get info on beef production, rotational grazing, forage management, conservation practices. Meet the season’s spring calves, have coffee or lemonade, maybe sample some Highland beef. Directions: From Caribou: Route 161 north; right on Colby Siding Rd. Go to end; right on Pratt. At 1/4 mile, stay right; go to hill top. Farm is on right; watch for signs.
