Minette Riordan, Ph.D.
Parenting Lessons from Coach Avery Johnson? Happy Mother's Day to each and every one of you out there, including my own wonderful mother and all women who have mothered me throughout my life. Mothering comes in many forms and I have been cared for by so many women, mentors and teachers. We have a couple of fun articles just for you this month, like "The Laundry is Never Done" by Diana Guintu. If you have been following my husband's and my personal journey to recovering our health, make sure you read my update this month: "Love Yourself to the Max," and what I am learning in my experience at Living Well Dallas. I am at the half way point in my 6 month program. There are some super fun events to check out this month, too, like Dallas Kids Expo at Market Hall on May 1 and 2. North Texas Kids will be there, doing a fun craft with the kids. Plus, we are putting a flyer in the goodie bags announcing anyone that signs up for our e-newsletter by May 15 will be entered to win our Ultimate Staycation Giveaway Basket full of over $450 worth of tickets and passes to local events like Hawaiian Falls, Ringling Bros. Circus and more. Then the weekend of May 8, check out a
brand new event just for you, Mom, called Celebrate Mama. You can find details on both events in our calendar. Yes, I did get to meet and briefly interview Coach Avery Johnson recently. He spoke to the teens at Trinity Christian High School on behalf of the nonprofit Just Say Yes. According to their website, they are "A healthbased educational organization equipping students to avoid destructive behaviors and lead successful lives." I encourage you to visit their website, www. JustSayYes.org, and look at their phenomenal programs and the difference they are making in teens lives. Coach AJ is helping them to spread the message that kids need to make the right decision at defining moments in their life. He said that life is like driving, we have to learn to read the signs. Pay attention to the dead ends, pay attention to times when you need to yield. He shared stories about when he had to make critical decisions and the signs that led him in the right direction. When I asked him what advice he had for parents, he said to remember that kids need direction, sometimes they need a pat on the back, tough love, or a hug and a
kiss. They don’t need to be told yes every time, sometimes they need to hear no. They need a guiding hand so that when it comes to the defining moments in their lives, they are prepared to make the right decision. One of the things that he told the kids, that I appreciated as a parent, is that when the moment comes, they need to stand up and share when their friends are doing something wrong, something that makes them uncomfortable. Kids harbor secrets and he urged teens to be courageous in speaking up, to take a stand and to share those secrets in the interest of helping a friend in the long run. While he did not directly refer to drug abuse or alcohol abuse or other behavioral issues, the message was clear. To be a good friend, you have to put aside the "popular" thing to do, knowing that the popular thing is not always the right thing, then do the right thing! Kudos to Coach Johnson, his clear passion for children and youth and his commitment to giving back to the community.

The Difference Between Cognitive Skills & Academic Ability by Bethany Petty
Take Time this Summer to Get to the Root of Your Child’s Struggles. At LearningRx we can explain WHY your child is struggling at school and dramatically improve his ability to learn. “I always knew that my son struggled with reading. I sought answers, but everyone told me what I already knew. LearningRx was different. They told me WHY my son struggled so that I could address the root of his reading problem. Thanks to their program, my son now loves reading and is back on track for his age.” - Paula W. Dallas mom
We are so convinced that we can help you, we are offering a $125 savings on our assessment.
$75 for May only!
When a child begins to struggle academically, we tend to immediately focus on the subject matter. For example, if a child struggles in reading, we immediately hone in on reading and spend extra homework time on it. We get tutoring for reading, and we pursue accommodations in school for it. Yet, we forget to look at WHY reading is a struggle. In other words, we forget to look at the root cause of the academic problem. A tree is a useful analogy when considering the causes of learning difficulties. The leaves and fruit of the tree are where we can see "symptoms" of the tree's failure to thrive. However, when attempting to return the tree to a healthier state, we don't treat the leaves and fruit. Instead, we realize that something must be wrong with the root When a student struggles system, so we address the roots. When a academically, it is as if the top student struggles academically, it is as of the tree is bare and failing to if the top of the tree produce healthy vegetation. is bare and failing to produce healthy vegetation. Instead of focusing on the "symptoms" of academic struggle, we need to focus on the root of the problem.....the CAUSES of the weaknesses. The "root" of academic problems stem from the brain's ability to process and learn new information quickly and easily. If your child struggles in an academic area, there is an 80% likelihood that this struggle is caused by poor cognitive skills. These are the brain's automatic processing abilities and include skills like attention, memory, and processing speed, to name a few. When weaknesses exist in any one of these skill areas, learning will be difficult. The good news? The brain can change! In fact, read a recent news release from Medical News Today at http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/ articles/173518.php. Through intense one-on-one training, the automatic processing skills can be changed and permanently improved! Once students have a strong root system in place, they are able to grow healthy academic fruit. In order to pinpoint WHY your child is struggling, call today for a Cognitive Skills Assessment. Isn't it time to get to the root of the problem?

THERAPY 2000: The North Texas leader in home-based therapy for children
Who doesn't love brightly colored flowers as a gift? These are so simple and inexpensive to make. They make a great gift for mom (great craft for dad and kids to do for Mother's Day.) They are also a great craft for grandma, teachers, and friends. We have used them as party decorations and party favors, too. A very versatile, colorful and simple craft!
Supplies: tissue paper in a variety of colors, including green chenille stems (pipe cleaners) or florist's wire

Florist's tape (optional)
Instructions: 1. Cut circles, squares, ovals or any fun shape of tissue. Work with at least 3" inches in diameter or larger. You can use different types of scissors to make fun edges. 2. Make a small loop in the end of one chenille stem. This will be the center of the flower and will stop the petals from falling off. 3. Take the petals and push them one at a time up the stem to the loop at the top. The more petals, the fuller and prettier the flowers will be. We found that scrunching the tissue paper together at the end gives them a more realistic effect. 4. You can wrap a small amount of floral tape around the chenille stem below the petals to keep them on, but this is optional depending on your use for the flowers and the age of the child. Or you can use a small green circle of cardstock underneath. Resources: There are some great You Tube videos on how to make the flowers. There is also a great Klutz book for kids on making a variety of different flowers. North Texas Kids • May 2010 • www.NorthTexasKids.com

Was there life before Max? I am not sure that I want to go there! For
over 36 years it was extremely difficult living in my body. I lived with
an undiagnosed, painful condition for all those years. Through divine
intervention, my business partner, Betty Murray, a Certified Nutritionist,
said I think you may be gluten intolerant. It was hard for me to believe that something I eat could make me so sick. I do indeed have an autoimmune
condition called Celiac Disease. It was hard to believe that since I had spent most of my career working in healthcare that no medical professional had
ever suggested getting my food allergies tested. instead I literally was told, “you are very stressed, don’t worry your pretty little head, you just need an antidepressant” or some variation of this for years while, I lived with incredible discomfort and pain.
The second divine intervention came through my good friend, Kym

started testing MaxWLX – a targeted weight loss accelerator designed to
reduce Leptin – your fat storage hormone. Leptin is produced by the fat
cells and tells the body to burn or store fat. I believe using Max GXL and
MaxWLX together helped with reduction of pain, weight loss and energy gain. To launch the MaxWLX product at Living Well Health & Wellness
Center, we integrated the product into our twelve-week weight loss program called Love Your Body to the Max! Included in the program is a workbook
and audio program walking you through lifestyle, behavior changes, new
habits and exercises along with MaxWLX and MaxGXL to achieve weight loss success. The Love Your Body to the Max program is a multi-dimensional,
all encompassing program; you can pop the CD in the car or on your MP3
player and listen to your weekly lifestyle-focused program. Then you do the corresponding exercise in the workbook. You get personalized instructions based on your metabolic type for how and what to eat to turn on your fat

Love Your Body to the Max? A Work in Progress by Dr. Minette Riordan
It sounds good doesn't it? And I wish I could say that I am there, loving
my body as it is. I am working on it, it is an ongoing process. I know how important it is to accept yourself unconditionally, I teach that to other women through my speaking, I teach it to my children when they are
struggling and I work on cultivating that love for myself. As moms, we forget that we have to make the time to focus on ourselves.
If you been following my journey with Living Well Dallas, you know

that last month I discovered that I have food allergies to most of the foods I was eating on a regular basis. I am dealing with that, learning to eat
differently, to cook and read labels differently. If you want to read my
article, visit our blog at www.northtexaskids.com. Living a gluten-free life is a challenge. Even eating a salad can have hidden gluten that sends my digestive system into pain for hours.
This month, my husband and I are at the half-way point in a six-month
journey with Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT and Jenny Bair, co-founders of Living Well Dallas. This has been a time of hard work, self-discovery and joy in a better relationship between Brad and I. It has truly been an inner makeover more than an exterior one. I want to share 5 key points that I have discovered so far.
1. It's not all about the weight loss! I started this program with the
intention of losing weight. Instead, I am finding health and focusing on feeling better, trusting that the weight loss will come. I rely too much on the scale as a

measure of my success. I have reduced my body fat by several percent in two months, I have lost inches and I have so much more energy now.
2. I started taking two great supplements that Jenny and Betty
recommended, Max GXL and Max WLX, two products that have
substantially increased my energy, decreased inflammation and completely gotten rid of most of the joint pain I was having. I have a spring in my step that was missing before! Read Jenny's article on pg. 8 to learn more about these outstanding products and the impact they had on her life. You can

products. Like Jenny, I am skeptical when people say they have a miracle
drug but I trusted her personal experience and agreed to try it. I am so glad that I did. You can learn more about the Max products and company at www.max.com/184888
3. How much fun it is to do a vision, mission and values planning
There are many fun things to do in the summer! Sitting outside under a tree with a good book is especially fun to do in the summer. In the car, on a plane, on a train, in the house, with a mouse, at the park, in the dark (with a flashlight), in a tent...
Where else can you think of that would be FUN to read? Some good kids books for summer.... session with my husband. We spent a couple of hours together with Jenny as part of our journey to health and really focused on what our shared
vision and values for our marriage and our family are. We have a clearer sense of what is important to us and how we want to live our lives. We
shared our values with our kids, explained what they meant and why they are a guiding force in the way we approach life. We have enjoying our
individual life coaching sessions with Jenny but for me, the one we did
together had such a big impact on us. We celebrated our 14th Anniversary in April - what a beautiful gift to give each other.
4. I am learning patience, not something I am very good at. There is
no quick fix to weight loss, health or fitness. It takes time, hard work,
preparation and consistency. 50 pounds are not going to disappear over night, no matter how much I wish it so.
5. I can't do it alone. I am clear that I need the guidance, moral support and
professional advice of both Betty and Jenny to support me in this journey. They have kept me from being frustrated, disappointed or falling off the
path. Their positive attitudes, insights and willingness to share their own personal journeys have made it so much easier to stay the course.
Building the
foundation for a Lifetime of
learning
I encourage you to contact Living Well Dallas if you want to learn to
Live your Life and Love your Body to the Max. Knowing that I have a plan, that I know the root of the problem and that I have the support I need, has made a tremendous difference in my life.

What “Not” to Buy for Mother's Day, Best Gifts & Wish List
k
Survey shows what mom really "doesn't" want for Mother's Day. Give household and garden items to mom this Mother's Day at your own risk! The poll, sponsored by a leading online personal gift service reveals that moms want to be showered with jewelry and flowers, a day off from household chores and quality time with their family. According to the poll, moms care most that loved ones remember their special day. A reassuring 46% said that anything their kids give them is a "good gift." 500 moms were asked to name their best and worst Mother's Day gifts. They were also asked to indicate the gifts they most wish for this year.
Worst Mother's Day Gifts Ever i The poll reveals gifts that have made moms cringe...including carpet cleaner, a thigh-master, a night out at their husband's favorite restaurant and a card that read, "reupholster the chair in the master bedroom."
Worst gifts ever, according to 500 U.S. moms, were: 1. Forgetting Mother's Day -- 15% 2. Kitchen appliances -- 12% 3. Garden tools -- 11% 4. Cleaning supplies -- 11% 5. Dead and poorly arranged flowers -- 5%
Best Mother's Day Gifts Ever i Apparently surprises make moms happy. Tickets to a Cleveland Indians game and a shopping spree to Chicago's Michigan Avenue were highlighted by two moms as their best gifts ever. According to the poll, best gifts ever were: 1. Jewelry -- 24% 2. Home and school-made cards -- 18% 3. Home and school-made gifts -- 17% 4. A day at the Spa -- 15% 5. Help with chores, or a day of rest -- 5% 6. Beauty Products -- 4%
Mother's Day Wish List i Moms are wishing for many different things this Mother's Day, from hugs and kisses to furniture, but the most popular wishes are for a little luxury and pampering. While some moms are aiming high, wishing for a new car, a mansion or cruise, most moms just want to be "Queen for a day!"

There wasn’t enough time in the day to finish all that she “had” to do.” This juggling act between motherhood and womanhood had reached a breaking point. She was losing it! As "Supermoms" we can all relate to having days where we feel stressed, irritable, and overwhelmed. It feels like someone has pressed the ‘slow motion’ button on your day. It just doesn’t seem to go by fast enough. You know what I’m talking about, right? I’m talking about those days when bedtime can’t come soon enough; when the much adored "Mommy, Mommy" is like nails on a chalk board; or when the smallest request to do something minor can send you over the edge. Yes, those days - when anything and everything our children do is simply too much to handle. I know that for some “Supermoms”, admitting this can be painful and shameful. No mom wants to admit that there are days when the role of a mom is the last role you want to take. Now, I’m As "Supermoms" we can all not talking about not wanting to be a mom. I’m relate to having days where referring to those days we feel stressed, irritable, and when we feel like we just don’t have anything overwhelmed. It feels like left to give; running on someone has pressed the ‘slow empty, if you will. I realize that we don’t motion’ button on your day. always have days where we feel like we are losing it but when we have them, they can really create a dent in our character. It’s so easy for us to start self diagnosing ourselves with disorders and personality defects instead of just taking a deep breath and chalking it up to part of the process of motherhood. The dents we create internally really affect our perception of ourselves. It can also leave us feeling inadequate as mothers and women. We have to be mindful of what we tell ourselves. We can’t go around thinking and feeling inadequate, damaged and broken just because we can’t seem to keep up with our laundry. Most of us don’t realize how much power our thoughts and feelings about OURSELVES affect the flow of our day. I am a firm believer that if we can be honest about those days we can find solutions to dealing with them. After all, those days are part of our journey as mothers. They are completely normal. If we didn’t have the not-so-good days, how could we really appreciate the good ones? Those kinds of days warrant a ‘Mommy Time Out’. That’s right. You read correctly. Don’t worry. You don’t have to sit in a room or in a corner pouting and thinking about what you did wrong until someone comes to get you. ‘Mommy Time Out’ is actually the time that you take for yourself; away from being a mom. Of course, I’d like to think that we all have the luxury to escape to a spa or a girls retreat, but the reality is, for most “Supermoms”, finding the time for self-care can be a chore in itself. Try to remember that the next time you find yourself having one of those days - feeling irritable, frustrated, and overwhelmed. Your internal guidance system is trying to grab your attention. It’s trying to say – “Hey! You need a break! ". The next time you’re out of the proverbial gas and only running on fumes where anything and everything seems to get on your nerves . . . take a ‘mommy time out”. After all, the laundry is never done anyways. Diana Guintu, M.Ed., is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Allen TX. She specializes in working with moms and women. What You Need to Know about Getting Outside this Summer by Jennifer Patterson
1. Why is it important for families to get outside? With childhood obesity and heart disease on the rise, outdoor activities are a great way to have fun with your family while staying healthy. Most people have fond childhood memories of camping, canoeing, or just sitting around the campfire with family. In the fast pace of today’s society, those simple but important times are getting left out. The memories you create while enjoying the great outdoors with your family are priceless, and should not be missed.
Just a little reminder to do something nice for your teachers on
National Teacher's Day

2. What is important for families to know about safely enjoying the great outdoors? Families need to take a few precautions when heading outdoors, but they are mostly preventative. The most important things are staying hydrated when out in the heat, keeping sunscreen applied in and out of the water, and using bug spray to keep bites to a minimum. Also, being aware of your surroundings and staying clear of anything that stings, bites, or gives you a rash. Always have a first-aid kit handy and have a plan in case of an emergency.
3. What are some local options for easy, quick weekend get aways around the Metroplex? Mineral Wells State Park, Cedar Hills State Park & Meadowmere Park on Lake Grapevine
4. Tell us about Adventure Day Camps and your Family Campouts. At Adventure Day Camps, we get them away from TV and video games and offer them exciting options that challenge them to fully explore what nature and the outdoors has to offer. Adventure Day Camps 7th season will begin June 1st and continue through August 20th. We offer 12 individual weeks of actionpacked adventure your children will enjoy that is very close to home, located on the shores of Lake Grapevine. Campers can attend a day, a week, or all summer! There is not a better way for your kids to enjoy their summer than by getting great exercise, playing hard, meeting new friends, and experiencing a variety of safe and supervised outdoor and team building activities. We also offer Weekend Family Campouts where you basically show up with your tent and personal items and we take care of the rest - food, clean-up, and fun activities for everyone to enjoy. We have two campouts scheduled, Memorial Day Weekend and Father's Day Weekend.
5. Why did you start Adventure Day Camps? When I met my husband, his company promoted and organized many outdoor and adventure type events and team building programs for adults and corporations. With my love of both the outdoors and children, it was natural for us to expand the business into kids' programs. I see the Moms and Dads faces when they pick up their child from camp on the day they caught their first fish, learned to play disc golf, or maybe just held a frog for the first time. Our programs allow the kids to be kids and have great fun in a safe environment. I think the parents notice the care we take and the love we have for the children.
Parents interested in more information on our programs can call 972-741-9169 or visit our website at www.AdventureDayCamps.com 14

Emma’s Kid Friendly Restaurant Review Mexi-Go 6205 Coit Rd Suite 396 • Plano, TX 75013 972-398-3533 by Emma Bonin We’ve been to Mexi-Go a few times, and it’s always good! It’s also a great place to meet friends and have fun. I usually get the beef taco and eat all of it. My brother has had the chicken fajitas, and likes them a lot. My parents really like the Molcajete for two. This is served in a hot rock molcajete filled with grilled chicken and beef fajita, chorizo, diablo shrimp, oaxaca cheese and salsa verde with guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, ranchero beans and tortillas. It’s quite a feast. Even the two of them usually bring home some leftovers! The menu includes a lot of traditional Tex-Mex as well as some other unique specialties. The kids’ menu has quite a few choices including beef burritos, chalupas, enchilada, chicken fingers, corn dog, crispy beef tacos, and cheese quesadilla, all served with rice and beans or French fries. And don’t forget to consider a kid’s
smoothie in several flavors. We have met friends there a couple of times. After dinner we got some tattoos from the quarter machines and put them on in the bathroom. It was funny. Mexi-Go has a fun atmosphere, just the right lighting, good service and most important, good food! We will definitely go back again, and again, and again! We go to the Plano location on the northwest corner of Coit and Spring Creek. They also have locations in Allen, Little Elm, and Richardson. Visit their website for more details: www.mexigo.com Emma Bonin is a fifth-grader at Hughston
Elementary. She lives in Plano with her mom, dad, and brother, Jack. She is an avid soccer
player and enjoys swimming, computer games, baking, and getting together with friends.

Kids in the kitchen
The Real Moms Guide to... Quick, Healthy Meals It seems like everyone is always so busy these days. I know I am. How can we cook a healthy dinner, spend quality time with the family, and get the kids off to bed at a decent time, all in the span of about two hours? It's a tough balance, but it can be done. I have searched for years for a cookbook that has healthy AND quick to prepare meals. It doesn't seem to exist. There are tons of healthy cooking and tons of quick to prepare cookbooks, but none that can seem to make that impossible combination. That's why I decided to create one myself. In my book, Processed Kids, there are dozens of healthy meals that can be prepared in 30-45 minutes. I'd like to share one of my families favorites.
Build Your Own Tacos with Spanish Rice by composer, playwright and puppeteer B. Wolf As resident composer/playwright for Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts for almost thirty-five years, I have been privileged to participate in numerous exciting and challenging artistic endeavors, both in the development of original works and in the adaptation of many literary classics to the puppet stage. Since both Kathy Burks and I have degrees in music, we have also sought opportunities to introduce our audiences to musical masterpieces in a new setting very different from their usual place in the concert hall. Interpreting classical music on the puppet stage has been a specialty of our troupe ever since our successful adaptations of Tschaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet and Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel. Because music is a powerful means of communication, transcending time and space, it is truly the universal language, conveying complex feelings and emotions without the use of words. Although recent research reveals that children reap very real benefits from exposure to classical music, the sad fact is that many children in our society have little opportunity for this experience. Most public schools have excluded music from their curricula, and often the only music that a child hears is from the pop culture. Much of this music has value, certainly, but there are some unique qualities which only classical music can convey. And some studies have shown that listening to classical music can enhance intellect and stimulate children’s spatial-temporal reasoning and cognitive development! The creation of a puppet production showcasing Carnival of the Animals, Camille Saint-Saëns’ timeless musical potpourri, has been a project dear to our hearts. This unique presentation opens on May 6th at Dallas Children’s Theater. To quote Kathy Burks, “This puppet interpretation of a unique musical work is an excellent introduction to classical music for children and adults. It is visually exciting and colorful. It is also quite educational, but in a whimsical and entertaining way. Our goal is to expose audiences to this incredible music and help them understand it with our story.” A puppet portraying the French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns, who wrote the work in 1886, tells the story. His biography is humorously interwoven throughout the fourteen short movements, each of which depicts a different scene with different animals. “Saint-Saëns created Carnival as a joyful exercise in having fun with music, and that is our intention, too,” says Kathy Burks. My own love for music, and especially classical music, began at a very early age and has grown ever stronger with the passage of time. When I wrote the script for this production, which features multiple styles of puppetry, my goal was to create scenes that would propel this marvelous music into the experience of the listener and provide an enrichment to last a lifetime. Taco Ingredients: 1 can pinto beans 1 tomato 1 avocado ½ medium onion grated cheese flour or corn tortillas butter lettuce leaves (optional) Instructions: Heat pinto beans Chop tomato, avocado, and onion Build your own tacos (use the lettuce instead of tortillas to make “lettuce wraps”) This recipe couldn't be easier. We like this vegetarian version, but if you want meat tacos, just brown a pound of ground beef and season with chili powder and garlic powder. Pair with Spanish rice, and you have a perfectly balanced and healthy meal the whole family will love. Spanish Rice Ingredients: 4c cooked wild or brown rice 2 tbs olive or grapeseed oil 1 can fire roasted, diced tomatoes, partially drained ½ medium onion, diced ½ bell pepper (any color), diced 2 tbs fresh cilantro, chopped chili powder, garlic powder Instructions: Saute onion and bell pepper in oil until softened Stir in cooked rice and tomatoes until heated Add chili powder and garlic powder to taste Throw in cilantro I hope you enjoy this quick, healthy meal. It is my hope that families can get back to cooking from fresh, whole ingredients. You'll feel great sitting at the table with your family and knowing you are eating food that is so good for you. Q&A with actor Rick Spivey on playing one of America’s true heroes, baseball legend Jackie Robinson Dallas Children’s Theater’s professional touring company travels coast to coast performing annually for approximately 100,000 students and families in some 50+ cities throughout the US. This season’s touring production is the historical drama MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. It’s the true story of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to break the color barrier and play major league baseball. Local actor, Rick Spivey, recently took a break from performances in New York City to reflect on his role as Jackie Robinson and to answer some questions about his year on the road playing this national hero.
Tell us about the play, Rick. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER is an epic and powerful story about a man’s plight for racial equality in a very immature and segregated time in our history. It is an incredibly inspiring play. However, in an effort to be as historically accurate as possible, we use a word that is commonly referred to as the “n” word. We don’t mean to glorify the word by any stretch of the imagination. It is despicable and possibly the worst word in the English language. But we want to give audiences a window, an inkling of what this man had to go through so we can all sit together and enjoy a show like this today.
What’s it like to play such an iconic baseball player? It’s an honor and humbling. I feel fortunate that DCT trusted me to do it.
What have you learned about Jackie Robinson? I’ve learned about the strength of his spirit and his resolve. I’ve learned a lot of historical things too. There could quite honestly have been no Civil Rights movement without him. He was a pioneer.
What have you learned about baseball from playing this role? I learned that I’m better at it than I thought. It’s a thinking man’s game. It’s America’s game. It’s a beautiful sport, it really is.
If you could send Jackie Robinson a message, what would you say? I would thank him for what he was willing to go through.
What do you think teenagers are learning by seeing the story of Jackie Robinson? If you truly feel it in your heart you can accomplish anything. Also, not to judge people by superficial things like color or anything that we discriminate against. To see each other as equals, as we are.
How do you feel about throwing the opening pitch at an upcoming Rangers game on May 11th as Jackie Robinson? Nervous! I haven’t thrown a baseball since middle school, and I’ve never thrown a baseball with my right arm. Ten years ago, I never imagined that I could actually be a professional actor touring the country. Having the opportunity to play the amazing Jackie Robinson and to throw out the first pitch at a Ranger’s game is a great feeling. Visit www.dct.org for tickets, showtimes and more info. Sports Scoop
Fairways, Greens & Girls by Mike Kravik
Golf can be so much fun. Hitting a drive nearly 300 yards, knocking the 7 iron stiff and draining the birdie putt is such a good feeling. While it’s extremely rare to find anybody who can throw a baseball 100 mph like Texas Ranger pitcher Neftali Feliz, it’s fairly common for golfers of average ability to make a birdie in a round. It’s consistency and making those second, third and fourth birdies in a round that separates the good golfers. Having the ability to consistently play well also depends on how much time somebody can devote on a range or on a green. Like a lot of dads who would like to get better at golf, Trent Pettijohn wishes there were more hours in a day so he could shave strokes off his very respectable 14 handicap. One of the more frustrating aspects of golf is how much time it requires to not only improve but maintain a respectable handicap. Between being a good husband, a good father and oh yeah, a good cardiologist, becoming a better golfer is not an easy task for Dr. Trent Pettijohn. Like a lot of 3 year old little girls, young Lauren Pettijohn yearned to spend more time with her father and would do anything she could to be around him, even if it meant tagging along with him when he’d try to get a late round in on a Sunday afternoon. Dr. Pettijohn soon discovered a secret a lot of golfers/dads have known for a long time. Getting your kid on the golf course accomplishes many things. Points made with the wife for babysitting, check. Quality time with the daughter, check. Mixing in desired time on the golf course, check. 30
Lauren had fun riding in the golf cart, spanking the ball around the fairway and getting something yummy to eat afterwards but the best thing of all was hanging out with her very busy dad. There was some madness to the method behind Dr. Pettijohn getting his Lauren (who is now 12 years old) on the golf course, “Before we had kids, my wife (Jacqueline) and I liked to golf when we were on vacation. I wanted to get my kids started in golf so they could go with us.” Younger sister Grace (now 10 years old) entered the scene after Lauren and when she was old enough, the scene repeated with her dad. Lauren and Grace both had a revelation this past summer when they went to a golf camp at the University of Texas. The girls, younger than everybody else, were initially intimidated by how serious everybody was about golf. Not only could everybody play, they usually had a full set of the best clubs with nice bags and coordinated outfits. The girls were tolerated at first but eventually embraced by the camp. At the closing award ceremony, the directors wanted to honor Lauren and Grace in any way they could so they were named “Best Dancers.” This was the first time that award had ever been presented by the University of Texas Golf Camp and it helped punctuate what was a wonderful experience for the Pettijohn sisters. The camp lasted only a week but Lauren and Grace not only received excellent instruction, they were also able to see and be with older girls who were such good golfers. Both girls had an awakening and saw that making the high school golf

team or perhaps earning a college scholarship no longer seemed like an impossible task. When the sisters came home from camp they wanted to get to the next level of golf and beyond. They aggressively pushed their parents to get them private lessons. The girls also wanted to start entering tournaments. The Pettijohn sisters had quite a summer and brought home a lot of hardware. Lauren bagged six tournament wins (with four second place finishes) while Grace picked up one tournament win and four second place finishes. This past February, Lauren took a major step up in competition and competed in a NTPGA tournament with older girls at the Twin Creeks Golf Course in Allen. In previous tournaments, Lauren hit from the ladies’ tees and always had one of her parents caddying for her. Mom or Dad could remind her about inadvertent breaches of etiquette, help keep score and make suggestions on which club to use. The rules of this tournament dictated that Lauren carry her own bag (she used a pull-cart), hit from the men’s white tees, receive no coaching and keep track of all her own strokes. Instead of playing only 9 holes, Lauren would be playing 36 holes over two days. Dr. Pettijohn and Jacqueline could watch their daughter and cheer but do nothing else. The parents quickly saw that Lauren was in over her head. Twin Creeks is a nice course but holds it’s own special challenges. The greens can be fast and when the wind blows across the prairie, there is nothing to knock it down, meaning that some holes play

of the round came when it ended.
This was more than just a bad day at the golf course.

felt terrible about what happened because their daughter simply wasn’t ready for this kind of
tournament. Jacqueline says, “It
was just awful to watch your child go through this and not be able to do anything about it.”
After the first day came to a
merciful end, both parents told Lauren that pulling out of the
tournament was an option. There would be no shame attached
because this was a challenge she
simply wasn’t prepared to meet.
Lauren told her parents she’d think about it but twenty minutes later said she wanted to keep
playing.
