£12/£10 (con)
Converging from across the country, Tannara are entangled in Scotland’s rich web of traditions. They play contemporary Scottish folk music: Considered, complex, arrangements that surround original tunes, modern tunes tunes and traditional ballads. Collective experience makes their musical approach unique. Despite their material’s modernity, it’s hardwired in spirit to the tradition of which their music is a continuation. At no point is the music pretty and delicate. On fiddle, harp, guitar, accordion and vocals, Tannara play with a raw energy that brings booming sets of tunes and songs together with moments of knot-in-stomach beauty. It’s four big personalities bouncing off each other to create big sounds. The result is an electrifying live act. Stonehaven Folk Festival described them as: “One of Scotland’s Brightest Up and Coming Bands”.

The Guitar Man by Jon Fosse translated by Louis Muinzer. Directed by Nora Wardell ‘Everything has its time, a man and a piece of music...’ A man makes his living singing the same songs day after day on the edge of town. He plays to an audience that is always passing him by. On a winter’s night, he tells us his story. Searching for answers to his past, present and future, he reaches a decision: to stop playing. In a world made up of winners and losers, The Guitar Man asks what is left when we reject the role we are expected to play? One of Europe’s foremost playwrights, Norwegian writer, Jon Fosse, speaks to a postindustrial society in crisis, where rootlessness and homelessness are the common experience. Weaving text, song and silence, this tender study of a so-called outsider traces the delicate balance between loneliness and longing, loss and salvation. Image design: Mihaela Bodlovic

*Pre-concert talk with Judith Weir 6.45pm Concert commences 7.30pm At the heart of this programme of parallels is Maurice Ravel’s sensual and political Chansons madécasses which depicts life and challenging events in Madagascar. Judith Weir’s partner piece to the Ravel, Nuits d’Afrique, uses poetry by contemporary African women evoking local life with a simple invocation which may recall the ending of Ravel’s composition. Hugely under-appreciated English composer Rebecca Clarke, whose style of writing was at times compared to Ravel and Debussy, is well known for her wonderful viola sonata but this short piece Morpheus is another beautiful, lyrical example of her work. Young American composer Rosalie Burrel’s Early Light, a stunning piece for solo violin, evokes indigenous North America whilst the exoticism of Ravel’s Chansons madécasses is balanced by the wit and charm of compatriot Jean Francaix’s String Trio.

Following sold-out performances in 2011 a new production of Doorways in Drumorty by Mike Gibb is presented by Awkward Stranger in association with Hame Productions. Doorways in Drumorty is based on the work of author Lorna Moon and interweaves stories of the lives and loves and gossip of the inhabitants of a small Scottish village. The play economically captures, fillets and skewers community life in rural Scotland in the 1920s, an era of twitching curtains, and along the way provides humour and pathos in equal measure.

By Peter Arnott. A Comar/Mull Theatre production. A light-hearted theatrical romp featuring starvation, scurvy, cannibalism… and some jolly tunes. Based on the ill-fated 1845 Sir John Franklin expedition to discover the North-West passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific and its extraordinary 170-year legacy. Set partly on the barren ice floes of the Arctic and partly in the stultifying drawing room of Lady Jane Franklin, Unspotted Snow is a “ripping yarn” - a bold and adventurous tale of tragedy, mishap, folly, arrogance, madness and betrayal, Victorian heroism ... and ruthless news management. Join us to explore and discover the hazy, crazy half-truths, rumours and scandals that besmirched the unspotted snow of the great white north.
