Chill Out and Get Patriotic: Homemade Ice Pops to Beat the Summer Heat

Independence Day is just around the corner. Celebrating the Fourth of July brings a sense of patriotism and community as people gather to enjoy parades, fireworks and barbecues. The summer heat adds an extra sizzle to the festivities, making it the perfect time to cool down by indulging in ice pops.

Before you dash to the grocery store, why don’t we make popsicles at home? Here’s a refreshing treat bursting with red, white and blue colors and fresh fruity flavors that bring relief on hot summer days.

Store bought pops are often full of sugar, artificial flavoring and dyes. How else can you get those neon colors not found in nature? While it’s fun for the kiddies to stick out their electric blue tongues, we can make healthy, delicious and nutritious pops they will love.

Do-it-yourself popsicles are so easy, you can literally put any flavorful fluid you wish in a popsicle mold, freeze it and make people happy. The molds can be found online, in practically any grocery store, even at dollar stores. Or you can opt for a nostalgic throwback and use craft sticks in little paper cups like back in the day. Remember ripping the paper off those chunky juicy ice pops?

Making popsicles at home can be

as healthy and virtuous or as indulgent and decadent as you wish. They don’t have to be complicated; you can simply freeze fruit juice, soda or instant pudding, and the kids will love them. Make them with yogurt, fresh fruit, and roll them in granola, and they’re a breakfast treat. Make them with coffee or your favorite cocktail ingredients, and they’re an adult treat. And the best part, you can have an infinity of flavors, and they’re still totally cheap!

The recipe I’m sharing today is meant to truly help you beat the summer’s heat. We’re making a very healthy, light, refreshing popsicle brimming with electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals (which include calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium) your body needs. Electrolytes regulate hydration, muscle and nerve function, blood pressure and your body’s pH levels. Imbalances or deficiencies in electrolytes can cause everything from muscle cramps and fatigue to irregular heartbeat and seizures. When we perspire, we lose electrolytes. How fun to concoct a popsicle that helps to replace them!

potassium. When choosing coconut water, look for one that’s 100% juice with minimal ingredients — ideally just “coconut water.” Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory with antioxidant properties. Next, we add watermelon and blueberries, both packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

PATRIOTIC ICE POPS

Yield: approximately 3 3/4 cups

Servings: 10 (3-ounce) ice pops 2 tablespoons candied ginger, minced 1/4 cup sugar Pinch sea salt

2 cups coconut water

1 1/2 cups watermelon, cubed 1/2 cup blueberries or blackberries

In a small saucepan, bring ginger, sugar, salt and 1/4 cup water to a boil. Let this reduce for about 5 minutes or until approximately 1/3 cup. Set aside to cool. When cooled, add the coconut water and stir. Use either a small melon baller or knife to make bite-size pieces of watermelon that will fit into your ice pop molds. Divide the watermelon pieces and berries among the popsicle molds. Fill with the coconut ginger mixture, and add your popsicle sticks. Freeze at least 4 hours, or better, overnight. What a perfect way to end a summer evening on the patio, feeling like a kid again. See you next week!

Butter Prints

It isn’t easy to recognize this wood piece with a deeply carved design. Unlike today’s familiar decorating stamping tools, it wasn’t pressed into ink and used to print on fabric or paper; it is a butter print.

Nineteenth-century farm families made their own butter, shaped it in molds, and pressed designs into it with handcarved butter stamps or prints. If the butter was sold at a market, printed designs would appeal to customers and identify the maker. Designs with symmetrical, repeating or divided elements may have helped divide the butter into portions. Some butter prints had handles or were attached to a butter mold. This oval print with a flower-andheart design and notched border sold for $5,015 at Conestoga Auction Co. It was made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the 19th century.

Q:In the 1950s or ‘60s, my mother had a Barbie doll that wasn’t like any I have seen since. It had painted brown hair with a painted blue headband, and it came with three wigs: long and dark brown, curly and reddish-brown, and short and blond. I have seen a lot of Barbies at auctions but not one with wigs like this. Is this one rare?

A:Your mother’s doll sounds like the Fashion Queen Barbie doll, introduced in 1963. This doll had a molded head with brown hair and a blue headband and non-bending legs. It was dressed in a one-piece swimsuit with white and gold stripes, a matching turban and white open-toe shoes. It was sold with three wigs: one blond, one brunette, and one titian (the term used for red-brown Barbie hair). It was marked “Midge T. M. [copyright]

1958 by Mattel, Inc.” The 1964 edition had “Patented” added to the mark. Mattel also made Barbie “wig wardrobes” in the 1960s, which were sold with a doll head, not a complete doll. Fashion Queen Barbies without the wigs or box have sold for less than

$100 at recent auctions. A doll with all three wigs and the original outfit and box can sell for $100 to $400.

From the time we are young, we are taught a universal principle known as the “Golden Rule” which, simply stated, is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The Bible teaches another enduring principle, it is: “As I loved you, love one another.”

At the core of each of these messages is love ~ and sharing that love with one another, just as God loves us. This “call to love” is one that resonates within the sacred halls of West Warwick’s very own Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. It is seen in the church’s philosophy of inclusion and acceptance. It has always been a part of the teachings and actions of this closeknit community.

Congregants who attend services at “Saint T’s” (as it is affectionately known) will see some things; they see families of all shapes & sizes, they see women in the clergy, they see divorcees participating in all the rituals and blessings their married and single friends enjoy, they hear contemporary music, they see those who extend kindness and love to them, What they won’t see is discrimination, exclusion, judgment, and intolerance.

The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is a Catholic Community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. As Father Charles Vohs, the congregation’s Priest explains, this is a faith community whose mission it is to reclaim those whose experiences have left them feeling marginalized by the traditional Catholic Church.

The church is a haven for those whose abiding faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ have not always been in alignment with the expectations of the church of their childhoods, leaving them feeling estranged, conflicted, and often unwanted. Father Chuck would say to those who feel left

on the fringes of their faith ~ come, you are a Child of God and you are welcome here. Come to be replenished, edified, supported, and uplifted.

Skin cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that affects millions of people worldwide. In addition to protecting your skin from the sun, there are other steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. With the recent collection of antique toys from the Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, there is one item in particular that has captured my attention as a beautiful period piece: A 19th-century English folk art clay diorama display. With its remarkable details, it’s no surprise it piqued my interest and inspired me to write about it today.

The term diorama usually refers to a scene with three dimensional ﬁgures either in miniature or full-scale formats. We all remember having to make a diorama or two in school, right? Well, this diorama is probably a little fancier than any you have ever made. It depicts an exceptional portrayal of a Catholic cathedral with fully detailed and painted interior, wood furnishings, sculptures, and more. Even the archbishop standing at the altar is made of hand-painted clay.

Dioramas were originally used for peep shows (no, not the naughty kind!); they were a scientiﬁc curiosity where the viewer could see a miniature scene through a single peep hole in a box. Originally, in the 15th century these scenes would be painted on transparent glass and lit by moon or sunlight to simulate time or

Some of these cabinets would also feature movable scenery made of wood or cardboard that would later develop into the toy theatre that became popular during the 19th century. Unlike the fully modeled ﬁgures of peep shows, toy theatre ﬁgures were often cut from paper and mounted on paste board and would include a condensed version of the play that the characters would have been originally part of. This form of entertainment is believed to have been started in England

around 1810 and they were originally sold as souvenirs of current productions, which in turn provided historians with context for what was popular in entertainment.

It isn’t hard to see why children were so taken with these souvenir sets, they came with numerous pieces, and eventually a stage where they could cultivate creativity. No wonder such a ﬁne diorama example like this cathedral scene was once included in the RISD Museum toy collection of the magniﬁcent Corliss-Carrington House in Providence.
