The U.S. has the largest number of surveillance cameras per person in the world. Cameras are omnipresent on city streets and in hotels, restaurants, malls and offices. They’re also used to screen passengers for the Transportation Security Administration. And then there are smart doorbells and other home security cameras.

Most Americans are aware of video surveillance of public spaces. Likewise, most people know about online tracking – and want Congress to do something about it. But as a researcher who studies digital culture and secret communications, I believe that to understand how pervasive surveillance is, it’s important to recognize how physical and digital tracking work together. Databases can correlate location data from smartphones, the growing number of private cameras, license plate readers on police cruisers and toll roads, and facial recognition technology, so if law enforcement wants to track where you are and where you’ve been, they can. They need a warrant to use cellphone search equipment: Connecting your device to a mobile device forensic tool lets them extract and analyze all your data if they have a warrant. However, private data brokers also track this kind of data and help surveil citizens – without a warrant. There is a large market for personal data, compiled from information people volunteer, information people unwittingly yield – for example, via mobile apps – and information that is stolen in data breaches. Among the customers for this largely unregulated data are federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

People volunteer their locations for ride-sharing or for games like Pokemon Go or Ingress, but apps can also collect and share location without your knowledge. Many late-model cars feature telematics that track locations – for example, OnStar or Bluelink. All this makes opting out impractical. The same thing is true online. Most websites feature ad trackers and third-party cookies, which are stored in your browser whenever you visit a site. They identify you when you visit other sites so advertisers can follow you around. Some websites also use key logging, which monitors what you type into a page before hitting submit. Similarly, session recording monitors mouse movements, clicks, scrolling and typing, even if you don’t click “submit.” Ad trackers know when you browsed where, which browser you used, and what your device’s internet address is. Google and Facebook are among the main beneficiaries, but there are many data brokers slicing and dicing such information by religion, ethnicity, political affiliations, social media profiles, income and medical history for profit.

and phone data. Legislation like the recent Texas Senate Bill 8 anti-abortion law invokes “private individual enforcement mechanisms,” raising questions about who gets access to tracking data. In 2019, the Missouri Department of Health stored data about the periods of patients at the state’s lone Planned Parenthood clinic, correlated with state medical records. Communications metadata can reveal who you are in touch with, when you were where, and who else was there – whether they are in your contacts or not. Location data from apps on hundreds of millions of phones lets the Department of Homeland Security track people. Health wearables pose similar risks, and medical experts note a lack of awareness about the security of data they collect. Note the resemblance of your Fitbit or smartwatch to ankle bracelets people wear during court-ordered monitoring. The most pervasive user of tracking in the U.S. is Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which amassed a vast amount of information without judicial, legislative or public oversight. Georgetown University Law Center’s Center on Privacy and Technology reported on how ICE searched the driver’s license photographs of 32% of all adults in the U.S., tracked cars in cities home to 70% of adults, and updated address records for 74% of

adults when those people activated new utility accounts. No one is watching the watchers. Nobody expects to be invisible on streets, at borders, or in shopping centers. But who has access to all that surveillance data, and how long it is stored? There is no single U.S. privacy law at the federal level, and states cope with a regulatory patchwork; only five states – California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia – have privacy laws. It is possible to limit location tracking on your phone, but not to avoid it completely. Data brokers are supposed to mask your personally identifiable data before selling it. But this “anonymization” is meaningless since individuals are easily identified by cross-referencing additional data sets. This makes it easy for bounty hunters and stalkers to abuse the system. The biggest risk to most people arises when there is a data breach, which is happening more often – whether it is a leaky app or careless hotel chain, a DMV data sale or a compromised credit bureau, or indeed a data brokering middleman whose cloud storage is hacked. This illicit flow of data not only puts fuzzy notions of privacy in peril, but may put your addresses and passport numbers, biometric data and social media profiles, credit card numbers and dating profiles, health and insurance information, and more on sale.

7 Ways to Have NOT MANY GOT THE MEMO the Best Budget Y Meeting Ever es, I’m trying to bring that good old one back (“Did you get the memo?”). That’s about all I can incredulously come up with when reading the financial news. It’s as if most of the world collectively has their heads sunk in the sand: We are experiencing a slow-down. That’s the memo, folks. And, really, I don’t want to be a party pooper but we’ve had nine strong bull years in the market and more in the economy. We’ve experienced many, many new stock records and the party is winding down. Things are changing.

ECONOMIC GRAVITY It also has to be said that the financial media are underestimating the effects of inflation. We’ve printed up about $6 trillion in two years. This is an extra 40 percent added to our money supply. That’s a big deal! In my August 2021 article, this was highlighted and back then the writing was already on the wall: Inflation was going to happen. Print a lot of money? Expect a lot of inflation, eventually.

ONE FOOT IN A REC***SION I don’t even like to mention the r-word (recession). Yet we have one foot in already. U.S. GDP has dipped for the most-recent quarter. It was initially down 1.3% and then revised down even lower to1.5 percent! Now that’s not earth-shattering but after factoring in inflation that’s pretty weak. But don’t they already factor-in inflation? Yes, but do you believe the government numbers? So we can safely assume even larger inflation and therefore even larger GDP weakness. I also don’t want to be alarmist but we, as investors, have to dig down and get prepared. Unfortunately, there are other cracks in the dam. Retail weakness is happening. The biggie was when Wal-Mart missed their earnings numbers. The pros expected one number and it came in lower. That’s a miss. Other retailers, too. Many hit or beat expectations, though. Housing has been a big, big driver of the economy and usually always is. For good or bad. This time around it’s been helping us out a lot, though. When you add direct and related real estate industries, housing is a good 20 percent or more of our economy. And we’ve got just a small bit of weakness now, from existing home sales to pricing drops and a few more negative indicators. The Federal Reserve is also pushing along a slow-down. They’ve raised rates and it looks like they’ll do it again and maybe more after that. So…that’s just not good for the economy. Cost of borrowing increases for businesses, consumers decrease spending and refinancing, companies start really missing earnings, it’s a large snowball effect.

WHAT TO DO? There’s quite a bit to do to reposition your portfolios. As mentioned last article, consider selling gains, lowering risky and volatile investments, upping your low-risk and short-term bonds, keeping cash, switching to value stocks, and making sure your investments produce above-average income. The space that Rajapaksa had set aside as an “agitation area” – a move heavily criticized for limiting people’s freedom of assembly – was renamed “GotaGoGama” (“Gota Go Village”). The GGG became the home of the Aragalaya (struggle) against the government, which has now raided the site and arrested protest leaders. The Aragalaya has been unusual in that it welcomed Sri Lankans from all ethnic backgrounds. In April, protesters outside the Presidential Secretariat included activists from the Muslim community – a direct rejection of the chauvinist sentiment Gotabaya had stoked. Demonstrators also cooked a mixture of water and rice (kanji) to commemorate Tamil civilians who died during the last stages of the war, when indiscri-

The military and the police, once praised for their service, are now seen as vehicles of state repression, and major media organizations have been condemned for whipping up anti-minority sentiment. The question now is what will fill the vacuum. Sri Lankans have a rare opportunity to build a new identity based on this struggle for dignity. After being tear-gassed and battered by the police, Sinhalese protesters have caught a glimpse of the violence and mistreatment that Tamils have suffered. After watching their businesses collapse from lack of electricity, they now have a sense of what Muslims feel when their businesses are torched by angry mobs. And after feeling the effects of sharply rising inflation, all households now recognize that plantation workers cannot live on $3 per day. In each case, the Sinhala-Buddhist majority has been given a window onto the decades of deprivation suffered by minorities. Sinhala Buddhists are connecting with their inner Tamils and Muslims. But only by building on this shared trauma can Sri Lankans transform resentment against the Rajapaksas into a new social contract. By renegotiating our communal bonds and relationships, we can construct a new collective identity. That means rejecting majoritarianism and corruption, and embracing our shared struggle for a free and prosperous future. I consider it to be the true measure of how you, as a stockholder, are actually benefiting from the company you invested in. You may not actually receive all of the net earnings in cash, but the company can buy back shares with net income, pay you cash dividends, AND/OR reinvest into the growing enterprise. But, first of all, what is an “earnings yield”? It is the opposite of the P/E ratio. It is essentially the E/P ratio. You divide a companies’ total earnings by the total market price of the stock. For example, if the company you are looking at has annual earnings of $20 million and a market value of $200 million, then the earnings yield would be .10 (expressed as a percentage that would be 10%). So for every dollar you are investing into the company, it is earning for you ten cents, or ten percent of a dollar. If a wonderful and popular company that everyone adored was making $1 billion dollars every year in net income that looks very good. But if that same business was valued on the stock market for $100 billion would
