Landscaping Tips for Instant Curb Appeal (STATEPOINT) – One of the best ways to achieve instant curb appeal, according to the experts, is to effectively layer shrubs, plants and flowers in your front yard. Doing so can create a cohesive visual experience that naturally guides visitors to the front door. Landscape designer Doug Scott describes plant layering in art terms: “Just like in a painting, you need to have a background, a middle ground and a foreground. Each layer serves a purpose, and there’s no more important place for them to be on full display than your home’s entrance.” To help homeowners understand the purpose of plant layering and identify the best types of plants for each layer, Scott has joined forces with Exmark, a leading manufacturer of commercial mowers and equipment for landscape professionals and serious DIY-ers. Here they break it down for you: 1. Background: The background layer should consist of taller evergreen shrubs to ensure that no matter what’s in front of them, you and your visitors will always have something green to look at. This layer provides a cohesive backdrop and a bit of living color in every season. 2. Middle Ground: Here’s where to step it down a notch in height and add interesting shapes, colors or stripes that provide contrast against the darker green

of the background layer. Herbaceous perennials, like lavender, are a good choice for this purpose. 3. Foreground: Finally, the foreground layer should help transition the planting beds to your lawn space or sidewalk, and should therefore be lower than the back two layers. It’s also where you can keep things fresh and get your hands dirty throughout the year by changing out annuals with the sea-
sons. Or, if you want a lower-maintenance entrance, you can choose smaller perennials, evergreens or creeping ground covers. Use the foreground layer as an opportunity to add pops of color at ground level and draw attention to your home’s entrance. Scott lays out a few other important tips to keep in mind: • Choose plants consistent with your home’s style. For instance, if you have a craftsman home,

Or, if your home is more minimalist, avoid an overabundance of different plants. • Don’t obstruct views of your front door from the street with plants. Likewise, visitors shouldn’t have to maneuver around plants as they make their way down the sidewalk. Neither is convenient or welcoming, so you’ll either need to keep pruning plants to size, or choose plants that won’t overgrow their space without a ton of pruning. • To make your entrance “the star” it should be, the plant material in the rest of your front yard shouldn’t be distracting. Rather let it frame the intended view. Scott offers more plant layering tips in “Making an Entrance,” a recent episode of “Done-In-A-Weekend Projects,” an original series from Exmark. Chapter of Pueblo County are recognizing 14 “Outstanding Junior Achievement Awards” recipients. One boy and one girl were chosen to represent each of the seven public high schools in the Pueblo County area. The program will be held on Sunday, May 1st, at 7:00 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 126 Broadway, Pueblo, CO 81004. (Rear parking off Evans.) In the event of Covid-19 cancellation, all plaques and pictures will be distributed to each family in the downstairs cafeteria from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Silver State Lodge #95, will host the event, with W.M.* XXXXXXXXXXX presiding and serving as master of ceremonies. The theme for this year’s pro-
gram will be “The Power of One” with guest speaker: Mr. Craig Eliot Cisney. Recipients of the 2022, “Outstanding Junior Achievement Awards” are:

Whew, that is both intense and seemingly unattainable for us mortals and yet it is what we all should strive for deep down and on the surface too. Difficult, but it seems to me to define the second part of the Golden Rule (We shall love thy neighbor as thyself) magnificently....... Just something to ponder for you! Ah, it's spring time once again. This is my 74th, of course I was only 2 months old when I lived my first springtime. I guess the first springtime I can remember had to do with hustling for the most eggs I could find and feeling okay that I was among the best at finding hidden eggs. Some kids were crying in the arms of their parents because they weren't successful (which made me feel guilty-guess it was my turn to reach the "age of reason"). The crying stopped when each kid was visited by the Easter Bunny personally and given an egg which made their tears turn into smiles and happiness. Seems a lot like a metaphor doesn't it? Love Thy Neighbor coming of age story. Would Mr. Putin have invaded Ukraine if "The Donald" was still in charge of the U.S. of A.? I remember venting my spleen to fill this monthly column about the hysterical Left and the calmer Right who desperately needed another Ronald Reagan. The Bush boys were Reagan light and lighter, maybe even light-
April 2022 - Senior Beacon - Page 3 est. I guess I became a believer in the Right in 1982 when Mr. Reagan started the renovation of Washington and America. I actually voted for Jimmy Carter in 1980 thinking that I could never vote for a movie star, plus the Dems trashed him and his Georgia Mafia. The whole world turned around throughout Mr. Reagan's 8 years (Please read the book "A Pope and a President") and carried over through the first 3 years of Daddy George's only term. HW seemed bored by the presidency and Slick Willie told us all that our roaring economy was failing and he had the answers for getting our economy back on track? So, he told a lie (not Bill Clinton!!) and somehow faked us all out for the next 8 years all the while padding his and Lady Clinton's bank accounts for their retirement years! My interest in politics began waning during young George's second term and when BHO came into focus I had had enough! The modus operandi of all politicians is to keep the pot roiling (boiling too) and the heck with "We the People." Just check into how much money they make especially when it comes to their retirement packages. We have people "running" the United States that have trouble putting a coherent sentence or two together. Yet, they win every two years or six years over and over again. It's not even a Party thing anymore. There
is not a dime's worth of difference between them. It's power and money.....um, money and money! Enough. Also, I listen to quite a bit of sports radio... kind of addicted..... my reason for telling you this is it is impossible to skirt the commercials. Man, the government's agencies are spending so much money on telling us how to live a better life for "mother earth." Here are a few: One, make sure you keep your tire pressure "spot on" because if you don't you will get less gas mileage. Then you will pollute the air even more with carbon emissions (most new cars and trucks tell you your tire pressure is off). Try finding a place to add air to those faulty tires. Not much fun. Two, it used to be a smart thing to warm up your car especially in the colder months but not anymore. Same reasons as above. There's one more but I'm old and forgot it. I promise. It was something so earth shattering that if we don't pay attention to this menace the world might just collapse. Let's bring this mess together. Love is.... all that counts. "The Pope and the President" is a great read.... coming of age used to be 7(?)...... the rest is politics.... yuck. Sorry folks. Godspeed to you and yours. Want to contact me? tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.” Imagine the questions popping into the disciple’s heads. What have I done? Who could it be? Lord, is it I? Surely not I, Lord. Jesus knew each man. He knew His betrayer. “Surely not I, Rabbi?” and Jesus answered,
“Yes, it is you.” Jesus’s words were not only for His disciples but every follower to come. “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.” Has your heart been pierced with of regret? Is there something you would give anything to do over again? One more chance to get it right? “I failed again.” Yes, like the rest of us. No matter where we are on the spiritual ladder there is or will be a time when in some way, we deny our Lord. “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Jesus admonished His disciples regarding their failure to stay awake and watch. Each time He returned, He found them sleeping. The Lord’s caution to Peter concerned more than sleeping but his imminent denial of Jesus when confronted three times before the rooster crowed twice. After Ron and I bought Zerby Automotive from Keven and Jodee Zerby in January 2021, we knew we wanted to ramp up production in the body shop. Many people still don’t know that we have a body shop, however, that is about to change! We have a new paint booth that is up and ready for use! It has been a big project, especially through these rough COVID times we all have faced. We struggled getting the project completed due to availability with
companies needing to have their hand in making this all a success! We have all our inspections completed and we are ready to start using it! Our new Paint Booth, by RTT, is much bigger and longer, it has a down draft system and a bake cycle, so where it would usually take a couple of days for a panel or a car to be ‘cured’ it will only take hours. The 27’ booth is designed to produce high-quality finish very efficiently. The booth takes filtered air that flows through the booth to an exhaust filter system at the other end of the booth. The AMU (Air Makeup Unit) has the capability to heat, or ‘bake’ surfaces up to 190 degrees! The advancement in the new spray booth will make for superior paint jobs! Sometimes we have people that come in our shop for body work to be done, and they don’t realize we are also a mechanical shop. The mechanical shop is what Keven Zerby started in Canon City in 1984. Someone in Royton, Oldham, England, woke up on March 20 and felt like something was missing from their life. And maybe breakfast was particularly difficult that morning. The Manchester Evening News reported that at the Barclay Pizza & Prosecco restaurant, as workers cleaned up after Saturday night's festivities, they found a full set of dentures on the floor in the bar. Barclay owner Emma Whelan posted a photo of a plastic bag containing the false teeth on Facebook, hoping to locate the owner. "We get a lot of things left behind after a night in the Barclay ... but this is a new one," Whelan said. "It must have been a cracking night."

The Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Little Rock, Arkansas, is facing a lawsuit on behalf of the family of Harold D. Lee of Pauline, South Carolina, who was hoping to be buried next to his parents at a Quitman, Arkansas, cemetery after his death on Thanksgiving Day 2019. Lee's body was transferred to the Roller-McNutt facility
and arrangements were made for the casket and funeral, KNOE-TV reported, but according to the lawsuit, the funeral home alerted the family on Dec. 10, 2019, that they had "accidentally cremated the body." Lee was extremely religious and "stickily (sic) desired not to be cremated, as he believed his body would be raptured following the second coming," the lawsuit stated. His wife, Eunice, was violently shaking in shock when she got the news. The funeral home waived the cost of the funeral and returned $5,000 after the mistake was made, the lawsuit noted.

Kristin Wiley, 49, was pulled over by Indian River County (Florida) Sheriff's officers after she barely missed hitting their stopped vehicle on March 20, The Smoking Gun reported. When they approached the car, they saw her 9-year-old son in the back seat, crying. The officer noted that Wiley's eyes were "watery and red in color," and he smelled alcohol on her breath, so he asked if she'd been drinking. She replied, "No," but her son piped up from the back
seat, "Mom, you can't lie to the police. You did drink." He told the officer that his mom had been drinking at a party and said he was "very scared while Kristin was operating the vehicle," the officer reported. A breath test recorded her alcohol content at nearly three times the legal limit. Along with DUI, she was charged with child abuse.

When Steve Nichols and John Winn of Indian Trail, North Carolina, saw a TV news story about a dog whose owners abandoned him because they thought he was "gay," they knew they had to do something. The couple of 33 years told The Charlotte Observer that they drove to Albemarle on March 23 to adopt the dog, whom they named Oscar, after the Irish poet Oscar Wilde. Oscar's previous owners had surrendered him for humping another male dog, which, Nichols said, "was one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. That's just pack behavior." Nichols noted that the dog hadn't been neutered and was suffering from heartworm, which led him to believe that "the
owner apparently didn't do anything to take care of this dog." Oscar is getting the care he needs and will join the couple's other dog, Harry, at their home.

PROTECTING BIDEN IS A FULL-TIME JOB FOR THE TIMES LIBERALS SEEM TO HAVE NO CONCERN THAT THE GOP WILL EVER DISCOVER THE PHRASE “TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY.”
This is an odd line to read in The New York Times: In “a still-emerging story” (exciting, no?), Project Veritas “worked to expose personal information about the Biden family at a crucial stage of the 2020 campaign.” Isn’t that what journalists are supposed to do? Just kidding! As we saw with Hunter Biden’s laptop, the job of journalists is to suppress negative information about Democrats. Instead of reporting news “without fear or favor” — Times founder Adolph S. Ochs, 1896 — the U.S. media now function as the Praetorian Guard for the Democratic Party. Still, you’d think the Times would be embarrassed to attack others for doing the reporting they won’t do. The story was about how
Project Veritas got its hands on the diary of the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden. (She’s the good child by virtue of being less of a drug fiend than Hunter.) It was titled: “Ashley Biden’s Diary Was Shown at Trump Fund-Raiser. Weeks Later, Project Veritas Called Her.” The Times no longer reports news about the president: It berates other journalists for reporting news about the president. Thus, the Times breathlessly reveals: — “The diary’s highly personal contents, if publicly disclosed, could prove an embarrassment or a distraction to her father at a critical moment in the campaign.” THAT’S NOT JOURNALISM! THAT’S HURTING A DEMOCRAT! IT’S LIKE ANTI-JOURNALISM. — “[The Project Veritas] caller was seeking to trick Ms. Biden into confirming the authenticity of the diary …” So? Has the Times heard of Woodward and Bernstein? “60 Minutes”? Journalism? The greatest journalists ever to walk the Earth (so I hear), Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, repeatedly hid their identities from sources, as described in their book, “All the President’s Men.” They also used insiders at phone and credit card companies to obtain private phone and travel records. Woodward approached grand jurors to try to get them to break the law by revealing evidence they’d heard. PULITZER PRIZE! The New York Times Book Review: “two young reporters left by default to play the hero.” To round out its indignation, the Times provided this bad-ass quote from the federal prosecutors investigating Project Veritas — oh

Project Veritas didn’t steal anything. Maybe nobody did. Ashley left her diary behind in a house she’d been renting while in rehab, and a Trump supporter found it. That person later brought it to a Republican fundraiser, then offered to sell it to Project Veritas. But let’s say the girl who found the diary in Ashley’s rental “stole” the diary. Has the Times ever published anything obtained illegally? QUIZ: What is the most important event in world history? Answer: The Pentagon Papers! What was the name of that case, anyway? NEW YORK TIMES v. UNITED STATES. The hero of the Pentagon Papers, according to innumerable books, movies, TV specials, documentaries, poems and folk songs, was Daniel Ellsberg because he stole a highly classified government study of the Vietnam War and gave it to the media. But the point is: A perfectly appropriate conversation about the settlement of a nonsense ethics charge was recorded in flagrant violation of the federal wiretapping statute by Democratic activists. The Florida couple, Alice and John Martin, just happened to be driving around, using a police scanner to capture private telephone calls near where Rep. John Boehner, chairman of the Republican Conference, on vacation in Florida, also just happened to be driving, while having one of those private telephone calls with other top House Republicans. Oh my gosh! I think that’s Newt’s voice! Quick, get out the recording equipment, Alice! Yes, it’s illegal, but let’s do it for “history”! Alice, who apparently had never heard of “television” or “radio,” but had a high-tech scanner and recording equipment in her car. That was another fantastic stroke of luck: The Martins happened to have a tape recorder in their car. They also happened to be flying to Washington, D.C., a few days later, where they personally handed the tape to Gingrich’s main antagonist, Rep. Jim McDermott. He made copies of the illegally obtained tape recording and gave them to the press. Guess who published excerpts of the illicit recording? Yes! The New York Times! There were no early morning FBI raids on the Times, the editors thrown in handcuffs, and their phones and computers confiscated — all of which has happened to Project Veritas’ James O'Keefe and his investigators. Nor did the Times seem troubled in the least by the blatantly illegal methods the Democratic activists had used to obtain the tape. They knew that the man they called Jesus had been crucified and placed in a borrowed tomb. Even though He had promised He would return again, the disciples, at this point, could not believe it. The evidence was too great concerning His death. The disciples knew that all hope had died with the crucifixion of Christ. Can you imagine the joy and hope that rose up in the disciples’ hearts when they realized that Christ arose just like He said. When Christ stepped out of the tomb, in all of His Glory, all hope was restored not only to the early disciples but to all of mankind for every future generation. That same Easter hope is available to us today and we, like the early disciples, desperately need that hope! The Bible tells us in Luke 21:28 that “Now when these things begin to occur, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (deliverance) is drawing near.” (AMP) This should remove the fear and uncertainty from any situation that we face, but it is only when we can “look up” to the One who can truly save us that we will lose that fear and uncertainty. As we approach this Easter Day, let our hearts cry out to know that same hope that the early disciples experienced, that Christ is not dead, but He is alive!!

Signs of Nursing Home Neglect and Elder Abuse BY AARON CRANE—Mov-
ing a loved one into a nursing home is a difficult decision. Families doing this expect their loved one to be treated properly and with dignity. The unfortunate truth is that nursing home neglect happens more often than one expects, affecting millions of people in America every single year. --- Vulnerability of Nursing Home Residents --Nursing home residents are most often not able to care for themselves any longer and are admitted into such a living situation because of their personal vulnerability to injury or death if not cared for in supervised accommodations. Many of these residents do not have another place to live due to limited personal resources or few family members in close proximity. Families unable to care for their elderly loved ones may place them in a home to ensure they receive the best possible attention and treatment that cannot be provided at home. --- Neglect of Nursing Home Residents --One in three residents of nursing homes suffer from neglect, according to recent studies of American eldercare homes. Neglect is a failure to provide the attention and services required for personal security and comfort of residents. Neglect is not always an intentional act by nursing home staff or management. It is the existence of the situation that causes danger, harm and anxiety to people living in these homes, however. Federal and state laws regulate how nursing homes must be operated. Neglect can be attributed to overlooking issues of importance, ignoring resident needs and even direct actions of staff. --- Warning Signs of Nursing Home Neglect --Nursing home residents who do not have regular contact with family members are more often the victims of neglect than those who are frequently visited by family members. Family visitations should include careful observance of the elderly person to look for any signs of neglect or abuse.
Bed sores, stiff joints and other physical signs may be present to indicate there is a problem of neglect when the individual is left in one position for too long on a bed or in a chair. Medical neglect can occur when ailments or injuries are not treated or are improperly handled. There may also be signs of behavioral changes in the elderly person, staff behavior changes toward the patient or limited access to your loved one. Malnutrition and dehydration may also be present. --- Prevention of Nursing Home Neglect --There are many ways that nursing home neglect may occur. But many incidents can be prevented. By being aware and observant of the circumstances of your loved one’s living arrangements, behaviors and care, you can be quick to notice nursing home neglect, should it occur. Ongoing and regular family contact is the best way to keep nursing home neglect from happening. A thorough background check should be conducted into the performance of a particular nursing home before family members are admitted to the facility. Medical boards provide information about infractions or problems at a nursing home, in regard to abuse and neglect. Caretakers should be screened through background checks by a nursing home prior to employment. --- When Nursing Home Neglect or Abuse Occurs --When nursing home neglect or abuse is suspected, it should be promptly reported to law enforcement. Such abuse or neglect can lead to criminal activity at the facility, if left unchecked. When injuries are discovered, medical attention should be provided through licensed medical professionals outside of the nursing home to ensure the victim is treated and issues causing the problem are resolved. --- A Lawyer Helps in Cases of Neglect, Abuse --Whenever nursing home neglect or abuse occurs, it is important to contact a legal representative. ome of director Adam McKay’s movies have kept me laughing throughout. His comedies like “Anchorman,” “The Other Guys,” and “Step Brothers” come to mind. And his directing also impressed me in serious films like “Vice” and “The Big Short.” But this time, McKay combines comedy and drama in DON’T LOOK UP, a timely satire about how and why scientific facts get lost

And what a cast he selected! Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ariana Grande, Ron Perlman and Meryl Streep all deliver excellent – and sometimes surprising – performances. Jennifer Lawrence plays a Ph. D. candidate in astronomy who discovers a comet moving toward the Earth. She reports it to her professor, portrayed by DiCaprio. The scary thing about this comet is that it will crash into our planet in seven months. But when these
two out-of-their-league astronomers try to get the word out as quickly as possible, ridiculous obstacles stand in their way. When they finally have a few minutes with the President of the USA (Meryl Streep in top comic form), she’s too busy worrying about mid-term elections to pay attention. Then they obtain T.V. time, but the co-hosts (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry) don’t want to hear anything that might frighten their listeners. It appears that what’s happening with a pop singer (Ariana Grande) is more important than real news. When the disaster gets closer, the government does come up with a silly

plan involving Ron Perlman’s character, but a tech billionaire (an unrecognizable but wonderful Mark Rylance) crashes the party. Comet heading to planet Earth. A strange topic for movie mirth. But “Don’t Look Up” takes a big dare and earns attention that seems rare. Not all funny, as satires are. Drama parts also up to par. And actors get into their parts while slinging extra-sharpened darts. Government and the T.V. news don’t treat the facts, just cause the blues for poor professor and student who want action from President.

ministration and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) are partnering to raise public awareness about Social Security imposter scams during the third annual “Slam the Scam” Day. Social Security scams - where fraudsters attempt to mislead victims into making cash or gift card payments to fix purported Social Security number problems or to avoid arrest - are an ongoing government imposter fraud scheme. For several years, Social Security impersonation scams have been one of the most common government imposter scams reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Social Security has made concerted efforts to address this issue, and extensive outreach and investigative efforts are having a positive impact, decreasing scam reports to OIG by more than 20 percent since 2020. “I am proud of the work we have done to combat Social Security imposter scams, yet I remain deeply concerned that fraudsters continue trying to deceive people into providing personal information or money,” said Acting Social Security Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi. “Above all, I urge people to remain

alert, hang up if a scammer calls, and ignore their attempts if you receive a suspicious email, text, or letter.” Criminals are sophisticated and there are many variations of this fraud scheme. For example, scammers may call or email saying they are from Social Security and that the person’s Social Security number is suspended or was used in a crime. The caller identification may be spoofed to appear as a legitimate government number. They may text or email fake documents in attempts to coerce people to comply with their demands. Another common tactic is citing “badge numbers.” In the latest development involving Social Security-related scams, criminals are using fraudulent Social Security letterhead to target individuals for money or personal information. Social Security will never tell you that your Social Security number is suspended, contact you to demand an immediate payment, threaten you with arrest, ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone, ask for gift cards or cash, or promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information or

money. “As we continue working with our law enforcement partners and partners from the private sector to combat these sinister schemes, I urge consumers to simply hang up the phone, or delete suspicious texts and emails, without responding to the scammers,” Social Security Inspector General Gail Ennis said. “That is the easiest and most effective way to avoid falling prey to these vicious scams.” Social Security employees do occasionally contact the public by telephone for business purposes. Ordinarily, the agency calls people

The findings by a team of researchers from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), parts of the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, were published in The BMJ. The NIH team was led by Chris Ramsden, a clinical investigator in the NIA and NIAAA intramural research programs, and a UNC adjunct faculty member. Ramsden and his team specialize in the study of lipids — fatty acid compounds found in many natural oils — and their role in aging, especially chronic pain and neurodegenerative conditions. The UNC team was led by Doug Mann, M.D., of the Department of Neurology, and Kim Faurot, Ph.D., of the Program on Integrative Medicine. Migraine, a neurological disease, ranks among the most common causes of chronic pain, lost work time, and lowered quality of life. More than 4 million people worldwide have chronic migraine (at least 15 migraine days per month) and more than 90% of sufferers are unable to work or function normally during an attack, which can last anywhere from four hours to three days. Women between the ages of 18 and 44 are especially prone to migraines, and an estimated 18% of all American women are affected. Current medications for migraine usually offer only partial relief and can have negative side effects including sedation, and the possibility of dependence or addiction. “This research found intriguing evidence that dietary changes have potential for improving a very debilitating chronic pain condition such as migraine without the related downsides of often prescribed medications,” said Luigi Ferrucci, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director of NIA. This study of 182 adults with frequent migraines expanded on the team’s previous work on the impact of linoleic acid and chronic pain. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid commonly derived in the American diet from corn, soybean, and other similar oils, as well as some nuts and seeds. The team’s previous smaller studies explored if linoleic acid inflamed migraine-related pain processing tissues and pathways in the trigeminal nerve,
showing a severe impact on quality of life despite using multiple headache medications. The diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish produced between 30% and 40% reductions in total headache hours per day, severe headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group. Blood samples from this group of participants also had lower levels of pain-related lipids. Despite the reduction in headache frequency and pain, these same participants reported only minor improvements in migraine-related overall quality of life compared to other groups in the study. “Changes in diet could offer some relief for the millions of Americans who suffer from migraine pain,” said Ramsden. “It’s further evidence that the foods we eat can influence pain pathways."
The researchers noted that these findings serve as validation that diet-based interventions increasing omega-3 fats while reducing linoleic acid sources show better promise for helping people with migraines reduce the number and impact of headache days than fish-oil based supplements, while reducing the need for pain medications. Earlier we studied 'stones.' The Stone of Destiny being our main focus. Hopefully my writings peaked your interest. Shortly we'll revisit another more familiar phenomenon titled the 'Blarney Stone' of Ireland, associated to a mountain of facts which are strictly breathed by the Irish today. Undeniably, some of these British Isles and surrounding islands contain more than their share of myths, lore's and superstitions directly linked to centuries of bygone eras. Unlike the general blue collar working population, such as farmers, and miners in the Welsh areas of these stories, the university educated scholars exhibit little interest in faeries, dismissing them as fantasies. Yes these are bizarre and fascinating revelations. Are they just fanciful delusions which enamored our youth? I think not. Our own maturity sporadically sidestep these tales. Skepticism blurs the
vision, also the mind. 'Once upon a time.' We're inclined to feel a sense of loss, as originally while youngsters it seemed a release/escape from daily life. We felt a feeling of empowerment, knowing that such tales as written by the brothers Grimm or Enid Blyton were written especially for us, with no doubts as to their meanings. Now it seems an irrelevant beginning to our tales. The words now practically hold less importance as we explore advanced technology. The paranormal still offers a fluttering of factual evidence in need of investigation. It's found quite confusing unless one is broad minded. All my writings are based on fact not fiction despite the obvious incredulities existing from certain folk. The prevalent belief lies mainly with those accomplishing menial but important tasks, such as those in pit/miner districts. These people are true followers of childlike fantasies, yet believers of insightful and sporadic mysterious certainty. Factually they believe and live their days attached to the fae kingdom. Despite this modern age of technology, children remain the core of these concepts, but we can only mourn their inability to access the realms of the 'other world.' Faerie meetings are principally held secret necessitating trust to prevent abrupt termination of initial contact. Legend circulates today of a bridge in Angelsea. While retrieving his father's cows a young lad was amazed and in awe of a daily 'gift' from the faeries. On a specific rock a gold coin appeared each evening, which for several nights the boy eagerly recovered with no knowledge of their source. At dusk while hiding at the forest edge he anxiously waited, his gaze directed toward the stone. Soon the story unfolded as a distortion of activity swirled around engulfing this average slab of rock. Delicate streams of iridescent shapes flitted back and forth almost in tune to an invisible orchestra. Tiny apparitions of creatures not unlike the human figure, clothed in glittering colored
lights sparkled within a vortex of this miniscule production. A curtain had arisen on the most magnificent performance anyone could ever hope to observe. The boy stood in wonderment. After a short time all became quiet, the incredible play terminated as brusquely as it had begun, and once again he retrieved the inevitable gold coin. Eventually his father grew suspicious, and demanded to know the origin of these gifts. After his confrontation with the boy, his son confessed. Stealthily they climbed the mud covered mountain, eventually discovering the notorious rock in question. The previous eve the boy witnessed dozens of miniature specters dancing in the moonlight… the exact location where father and son now stood. He desperately sought evidence to convince his father who also was a believer in the 'other world.' After walking through muddy pastures in the pouring rain, no coin was evident on the piece of rock, nor would there be in the future. Abruptly they both concluded that forthcoming faerie gifts would be terminated due to lack of the child's trust. The boy would never receive such coinage again… as their faith was shattered. The moral of our legend is this… any unidentified gifts should be covertly and appreciatively acknowledged without question, as you may never know their source…

And of course, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. Presidential-election reruns are not unknown in our history; they happened frequently in the nation's early years. But there hasn't been one in two-thirds of a century, though we may be approaching one in 2024. Joe Biden versus Donald Trump: The Sequel. We may yearn to see the oldest hitter (Albert Pujols, 42) face the oldest pitcher (Justin Verlander, 39) this season, and if the Cardinals end up facing the Astros in the World Series, we may have the chance. We would have loved to see the two oldest Grand Slam champions (Ken Rosewall, 37 at the time, and Roger Federer, a youthful 36) face each other, but they are of different eras and, in a way, different eras of men's tennis. And what might you give to see the two ancient hockey mariners from Saskatchewan, Gordie Howe (52 in his last outing) go up against goalie Johnny Bower (45 in his) once more? Biden and Trump? Not so much. Despite their efforts at appearing youthful and exuberant, the president and the pretender look tired right now. And in truth, the American people are tired of both of them. Seldom if ever -- reliable public-opinion polls aren't even a century old -- have
two leading politicians been so poorly regarded by the public. Biden's approval rating is 43%, according to YouGov. Trump's favorability rating is 38%. (Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stood at 67% among Americans in a poll taken before his poignant remarks to Congress more than two weeks ago.) At this relative point after his presidential defeat, Jimmy Carter -- the president to whom Trump ardently resists comparison -- recorded a 54% favorability, according to the Los Angeles Times poll. George H.W. Bush -- a figure Trump reviles with special enmity -- stood at 76% in the Times Mirror poll. That is exactly twice the figure Trump receives from a public he hopes will return him to the presidency. (Both defeated presidents gracefully left politics, Carter becoming the personification of good works, and Bush becoming the personification of a good man.) Bryan was 48 the third time he ran for president; Richard Nixon was 59 the third time he sought the office, and Henry Clay was 67. Trump would be 78. Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is less than half his age. GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, who argues Trump prevailed in 2020, won't even be 30 in 2024. Age, of course, is no deterrent to greatness in leadership; Winston Churchill was 65 when he became British prime minister and was 80 when he finally left office, the same age of Nelson Mandela when he left the presidency of South Africa. But the contenders of 2020, both angling for a 2024 rematch, oftentimes
look like spent forces. The American public may like the policy Biden is pursuing with regard to Ukraine, for example, but they like the man less. (Though his ratings have inched up since the war there began, he is not experiencing the rally-round-the-flag phenomenon that customarily occurs during crises; both President Bushes enjoyed robust poll ratings after Desert Storm and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, respectively.) There is in all this a distinct advantage for Republicans. The Democrats may control both houses of Congress, but their high-profile bench is thin. Quick: Name four Democrats, besides the 80-year-old Bernie Sanders of Vermont and the 72-year-old Elizabeth Warren, who could plausibly run a strong presidential race. You might come up with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is 40. And of course Vice President Kamala Harris, 57. And Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. She is 61. Who's the fourth? I write about politics for a living and I can conjure up only a few others. President Gretchen Whitmer? The Republicans are loaded, as envious Big Ten college football coaches say when they contemplate a conference rival with 17 returning starters. (This year that's Iowa, whose nine returning offensive players include quarterback Spencer Petras.) There are six plausible GOP nominees under the age of 60: governors Ron DeSantis of Florida and Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, former
