Montgomery & Steward Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary In Historic Building (STATEPOINT) – The original
Rouch Funeral Home was located at 12th and Court StreetfJ.n the historic building (Bowen Mansion) currently owned by Pueblo County. In 1928 Orville D. Rouch began construction on a new building to be located at 14th and Main. Stories in the October 10 and 27, 1928 Chieftain chronicle the beginning of construction on the building. The October 27 story talks about the work laying bricks on the exterior, "With mason work well under way, about 15 layers of bricks have been placed on the front wall of the Rouch Funeral home at Fourteenth and Main streets according to Orville Rouch owner of the building." Early estimates were for the building to be finished by the end ofJanuary. They were pretty accuratethe business held its open house for the public on February 24, 1929. The Pueblo Chieftain story of that day states that the building cost more than $40,000 to complete. It featured 12 large rooms devoted to business, four display and store rooms in the basement and eight living rooms on the second floor. 'Ihe story continues, "The plans for the entire building in arrangement, specifications and decorating were drawn by Rouch and his wife. No expense was spared in the construction. Howard Whitlock was in charge of the work, which started September 24, 1928, and was completed about three weeks ago ... The reception rooms are of soft old rose tint, the wood work is of Oregon fir, painted Hollywood gray, the tapestries on the wall harmonize with the color scheme. The draperies are green, that shade of green that always seems so restful to the eyes. A heavy Axminster carpet covers the entire floor. Overstuffed chairs, divans, floor lamps are all neatly
arranged." The funeral home had a pipe organ, privacy rooms for family desiring privacy during the services. They also had a range of clothing in which people could be
buried; the previous era's "burial gowns" had gone out of fashion by that time. Subcontractors and

suppliers for the building included: Porter Plumbing and Heating, M. J. McAfee brick work, Pueblo Electric company, F. H. Carde roofing, Nels Nelson painting and decorating, King Lumber and Investment company cement and mill work and Midwest steel company among others. Orville Rouch came to Pueblo in 1905. In 1922 he formed a partnership with Mr. Dunaway to form Dunaway Rouch Mortuary. The Colorado Cultural Resource Survey Architectural Inventory Form on the internet states "But progressive-era reforms eventually revolutionized funeral practices. Reformers urged Americans to live cleaner, more sanitary lives, and this meant removing corpses and funerals from private homes. "The Rouchs were in the forefront of the movement for funerals away from private homes. The construction of the funeral home was a risk; the background story on the website states that Rouchplanned the building in such a way that it could be converted into apartments should the business not prove successful. Following World War II sons Favorite and Orville M. joined their father in the funeral business. A Pueblo Starjournal story dated November 4, 1957 spoke of the two brothers who returned to Pueblo after the war. The reporter noted that "Favorite had worked with his father during his high school (Central) years, and he remembers that he was the only boy in high school who had a tuxedo and derby hat. 'We wore them in conducting

Christians and pro-life individuals across the world are celebrating the overturning of Roe V Wade, a fiftyyear-old heinous decision of the SCOTUS which legalized murder of millions of innocent human beings. Whether the Justices were uninformed, ignorant or evil, the decision brought a blight on the nation whose motto is in essence, a declaration of freedom and life and liberty for all. After years of prayer our God
brought Roe V Wade to the grave and we rejoice for the millions of babies whose lives will be saved. Yet while the majority of Americans and others around the world celebrate this victory for life, the other side groans, whines and wails, while rabidly protesting and demonstrating, outraged that they did not get their way. The temper tantrums and screaming persists, not only from liberal citizens but elected officials who are supposed to display dignity and respect for the offices they hold. “I demand to control my own body.” A mockery to the lack of control that leads to pregnancy. Actually, those women are correct and should have control over their bodies. The control needs to begin by making wise choices about their personal sexual activity. If they would exercise the control they say they demand they would prevent the pregnancy and a baby wouldn’t have to die for a parent’s reckless uncontrolled lust. Consider the diabolical agenda of Margaret Sanger. How many people of all races who support the organization are aware of the actual intentions and goals of the founder of Planned Parenthood? A web search of quotes by Margaret Sanger, produces shocking demented remarks that are sickening. I share a few examples from many quotes. In a December 10, 1939, letter to Dr. Clarence J. Gamble, she wrote, "We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population..." In her 1920s book, Women and the New Race, chapter 5 titled, “The Wickedness of Creating Large Families, she says, “The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it." Sanger and her followers

As our constitutional rights are being eroded away, this message from heaven was light in the midst of darkness. The SCOTUS turned the abortion decision back to the states and “We The People” will have a say in such matters. Twenty-two states had laws or constitutional amendments that were already in place which could be quickly enacted to ban abortion when Roe died. The laws include state bans on abortion that were previously in place before the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe protected abortion rights. Within one hour after the Supreme Court made the announcement, Missouri’s governor declared abortion illegal in that state. Other states followed. I believe even though it's a long shot, it can happen in Colorado. Lift up your hands and praise a mighty God who is able. Abortion has not ended and will continue as wicked companies such as Bank of America, Dick’s Sport-

On The Way To Primary . . . (Pueblo, CO) — A Republican, a Democrat and an Independent walk into a meeting. . . . wait! Sounds like the beginning of a good one liner but in truth, it is the beginning of a great scenario. Recently the Secretary of State appointed a supervisor to oversee and manage the primary election for Pueblo County because of a series of misfortunate events. Events that one must wonder how a person, who has been in office for 16 years as a clerk and recorder and has handled countless county and city elections could so blatantly let discrepancies slip by. Colorado has gone through redistricting after the census and our population has grown. As a result some of the districts are different. And because this is a primary unaffiliated voters, meaning those that did not claim a party preference, received two ballots mailed to them for the upcoming primary. They could only vote for one or other but it begs the question what happens with the unused ballot? If the voter tried to vote and use both- then both ballots were to be disqualified. Seems simple enough. On June 13th a voter in precinct 303465102 brought to the attention of city council the fact that his ballot, and the ballot of his entire building complex, did not have the correct state house district. This voter resides in district 46 but his ballot and the ballots of his neighbors in the complex, all stated the ballots were for district 62. When this individual brought this to the attention of the Pueblo County Elections department he was told that it was because of redistricting that took place in 2021. The election clerk did apologize and stated they would issue new ballots. A news reporter from channel KRDO reported the story and was told by the Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder, Gilbert “BO” Ortiz that it was an isolated incident that occurred at that address only. If only that were true. But wait, there’s more. If the redistricting took place in 2021 it might be helpful if the general voting public had a map of where the lines are now drawn and what district they fall into. A quick look at the Pueblo County web site shows no such detail nor has it been updated for decades. If that were the only incident it might be forgivable - understandable perhaps. Mistakes happen. Mistakes are one thing but consistent mishandling of information is another. The Secretary of State will need to determine is this rises to the level of criminal or merely inefficient ability. Voters in precinct 209 have the wrong state house race on their ballot, and perhaps as many as 2,200 voters will not be able to vote in the district they live in. If this has happened in one precinct it is easy to assume that there are many
such problems in other precincts as well but not enough time to police the results. The entire race and candidates for Country Commissioner was left off ballots all together and mailed to approximately 1,600 voters. How do you leave off an entire segment of the race? Those ballots had to be reprinted. There is a concern of where those 1,600 printed ballots, already mailed, will be flagged or exactly how they will be monitored. All this has a cost to the tax payer of course. Reprinting ballots, additional monitoring personnel, the cost adds up. As well, when the Secretary of State, had to appoint a supervisor to Pueblo County for the upcoming election, the taxpayers of the area must bare the cost.

The due dates are spread out through December. "To be able to experience this all together has been such a relief but also really exciting," said Ellie Kongs, one of the nurses.

Since 2013, when he was only 13 years old, Le'Genius Williams, now 22, of St. Petersburg, Florida, has spent a whole lotta time in the criminal justice system, The Smoking Gun reported. After release from prison in 2020, he was arrested in 2021 and released on $12,000 bond in February. But his latest run-in with law enforcement was on June 13, when he allegedly struck his girlfriend in the face with a handgun, then drove off in a truck with another man. When police caught up with him, they found loaded firearms, cocaine and fentanyl in the vehicle. Le'Genius, once again not living up to his name, was held on $77,000 bond, and his earlier bond was revoked.

KXLY-TV reported on June 21 that a family in Spirit Lake, Idaho, has been left without a roof for three weeks after a contractor mistakenly tore the roof off their home. THEY’RE REPLACING YOU, BLACK AMERICA HOW AN UNEQUIVOCALLY ANTI-BLACK MASS MURDER BECAME A CRIME AGAINST IMMIGRANTS. Liberals are screwing over African Americans again, sublimely confident that whatever they do, Democrats will never get less than 90% of the black vote. In the Buffalo, New York, mass shooting 10 days ago, 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron drove 200 miles to a grocery store jam-packed with
the descendants of American slaves and gunned down as many people as he could. But instead of this being an anti-black thing, the media have decided, no, it’s an anti-immigrant thing, based on the shooter’s belief in the “great replacement theory,” which holds that elites are deliberately replacing historic Americans with immigrants. Trust us, it’s all in his “manifesto” — and no, you can’t see it. What? You don’t trust the media to tell you the truth about the shooter’s motive? Still, I can’t help but notice that the shooter seemed really intent on killing black people. He drove 3 ½ hours from Conklin, New York, to get to a city with remarkably few immigrants. Only 10% of Buffalo is foreign-born. But it’s 35% black. Much closer to Conklin than Buffalo is, for example, Middletown, New York, which is 39% Hispanic and 16% foreign-born. In about half the time it took to get to Buffalo, he also could have driven to Utica, New York, which is 22% foreign-born. And he would have cut his driving time by more than an hour if he’d gone
to Schenectady, New York, 17% foreign born. So why are the media insisting that the killer hated immigrants, when it kinda looks like he mainly hated blacks? For one thing, midterm elections are coming, and voters are poised to have a say on the fabulous things Biden’s done to our border. Oh, you think we should have a border? What — do you believe in REPLACEMENT? Moreover, Hispanics have begun to show a slight — very slight — willingness to vote for Republicans, coinciding with the Democratic Party’s enthusiastic embrace of Black Lives Matter, and thus, black criminality. (It turns out Latinos are generally opposed to getting beaten up and having their money stolen.) Finally, of course, there’s the fact that Democrats know there’s nothing, absolutely nothing, that will stop black people from voting for them. Now they’re just showing off. Yeah, Buffalo was a racist shooting — but watch this: We’re going to make it about immigrants, and we’ll STILL get the black vote! After years of the media trying to turn every single event into proof that white people hate African Americans, at last there’s a monstrous crime where even skeptics say, Yeah, this one was totally about a white guy who hates black people. But the media decided that this week, they needed to juice the immigrant vote. The madness, the wild upside-down insanity of the media pushing the “great replacement theory” as the motive for the Buffalo shooting, is this: If anyone’s being replaced by immigrants, it’s black people.

Not only have working-class wages gone into the toilet, but a lot of jobs are totally off-limits to black people — because they don’t speak Spanish or Chinese or Tagalog. For decades now, black professors, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and ordinary African Americans have been pointing out how immigration hurts them. Democrats don’t care. (Pueblo, CO) – Public Health Officials announced Pueblo County’s first human tularemia case in 2022 in a youth. Pueblo residents, especially those living in Pueblo West, are advised that tularemia causing bacteria may be present in some of the mammals, especially rabbits, rodents, and hares, and on the ground where these animals may be active,” Alicia Solis, program manager at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. Solis added, “Human tularemia cases are rare, but some activities may increase the risk of developing the disease. These activities may include inhaling or drinking contaminated soil or water, having direct skin contact with infected animals, or being bitten by a tick or deer fly.” Tularemia, “rabbit fever,” can be spread through soil contaminated with the droppings or urine of sick animals such as rabbits and tularemia-causing bacteria can aerosolize and be inhaled when a person mows, blows leaves, or turns up soil. “Because tularemia is known to be in Pueblo County, precautions should always be taken, especially when mowing weeds or grass and when soil is disturbed,” emphasized Solis. Infection can also occur from the bite of infected insects (most commonly ticks and deer flies) as well as to soil and vegetation. Hunters who skin animals without gloves and are exposed to infected blood through an open wound are also at risk. Typical signs of infection in humans include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, chest pain, and coughing. Tularemia can be treated with antibiotics; contact your medical provider if these early signs are present. Dogs and cats can also get tularemia by eating infected rabbits or other rodents and through tick and deer fly bites. If your pet shows symptoms of illness including fever, nasal and eye discharge, and skin sores, take the pet to a veterinarian promptly. Tularemia is easily treated if diagnosed early in dogs and cats. Recommended precautions include: * Avoid handling wild animals. * When outdoors near places where wild rabbits or rodents are present,

Spectacular is “RRR.” Over the top but you’ll want more. India gives us a great time. And now it is a fave of mine! Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. deserve praise for their impressive lead performances. They make their characters seem real even in scenes that are pure fantasy. Charan plays the more stoical one (until he gets angry) and Rama Rao Jr. shows more of his character’s emotional side. But they work together like hand and glove. And, wow, can these great guys dance! Plus, it’s easy to see them as super heroes. Other members of the cast manage to provide first-rate support. Playing evil British people to the hilt are Ray Stevenson as the Governor, Edward Sonnenblick as his assistant and Alison Doody as a
Morris. She projects grace and kindness as a young woman who falls for Bheem.
The cinematography in RRR is
cue segment involving a child in danger stands out. So do battle scenes -- even with huge tigers. I also appreciate the crisp, colorful visuals most of the time in place of that dark and hazy look in too many movies lately.
My only complaints? Excessive violence and not enough dance numbers. I can’t help thinking how great it would be if this fabulous film were re-made as a musical. But, as you probably know, I think that’s true about any motion picture.

Have you ever heard of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska? (PUEBLO, CO)– I saw a docu-
mentary on television (EWTN) and it was very compelling and I couldn't get enough of it. The centuries before and since the age of Jesus Christ are littered with prophets and saints concerning the head of the Catholic Church especially and all other Christian faiths too. Atheists, agonistics, anyone on the planet that is curious about such things. If you believe the concept of Saints or not, this young Polish girl, who had a vision of Christ at age seven but disregarded it as she grew older, is quite a story. Her sentient life was in the 1930s and 1940s. She lived her young life as most young girls did during the time before Hitler decided to be god of the world and then in 1939 marched into Poland and WWII began. Just before this happened Faustina decided to become a nun, because Christ continued to come to her on a more regular basis and she thought the best place for her was being cloistered. At first, she was having a tough time with the mother superior but she lived life with a smile on her face and accepted even the most menial of chores, always keeping that smile on her face. During this time Christ's visions became more frequent so she chose a father confessor. She told him of the visions and what Christ had said to her and at first the priest didn't believe her. She was insistent and never wavered and always kept that bright smile. Eventually her confessor began to believe her. Christ told her He wanted a painter to paint a picture of Jesus the way she sees Him so as to have it be seen by the rest of humanity. Her confessor knew a painter and he was very temperamental but Faustina held her ground because Jesus was insistent that the
portrait should be precise. After much ado, the painting finally was finished. Faustina wasn't totally happy but the painting was acceptable and can be seen to this day. But here is the crux of the matter: Faustina's confessor told her to write down in a diary everything Christ told her in her visions. She did this. But, with the dawning of Hitler's invasion and total takeover of Poland she became downtrodden and frustrated because things weren't moving along. She lost hope and actually burned her diary. When she told this to her confessor, he chastised her and told her to start another diary. He told her he would somehow smuggle it out of Poland even with Nazis everywhere. She relented. When the second diary was complete she gave it to her confessor and the painting also had to be smuggled out because Christ explained to her in very specific terms what the painting meant. Ladies and gents. Christians or not. You all should go to your libraries or to your computers and see just how close these messages didn't get out to the world. Faustina herself died within a couple years after the diary and painting were given to her confessor. The story is mesmerizing and the accounts of how difficult it was to be smuggled out to the world keeps you on the edge of your seat. To wit: Our Lord said to St. Faustina: Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you... Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death.... When they
say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior.... Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. are reviving an old tactic to gain trust. Scammers are emailing and texting pictures of real and doctored law enforcement credentials and badges to prove they are legitimate and scam people out of money. Scammers may change the picture or use a different name, agency, or badge number, but the basic scam is the same. Federal law enforcement agencies are warning the public to be skeptical of email and text messages claiming to be someone from a government or law enforcement agency. No one in federal law enforcement will send photographs of credentials or badges to demand any kind of payment, and neither will government employees. Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (OIG), Department of Labor OIG, NASA OIG, the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) joined forces to issue this scam alert. HOW A GOVERNMENT IMPOSTER SCAM WORKS These scams primarily use telephone to contact you, but scammers may also use email, text message, social media, or U.S. mail. Scammers pretend to be from an agency or organization you know to gain your trust. Scammers say there is a problem or a prize. Scammers pressure you to act immediately. Then a remarkable thing happened. Not so remarkable when you realize that Pueblo, Colorado is the Home of Hero’s and that mantel is bestowed for a reason. Councilwoman Regina Maestri decided to spear-head a committee that consisted of the candidates running for office in the primary, and some of the constitutes that brought their concerns to her. They had a round table discussion, took and compared notes, and realized that this needed the attention of the Secretary of State.
There was not one party over the other but all of them, each party, Democrats, Republicans, Independents were all concerned with transparency and election integrity. There was no fighting, no flag waving and grandstanding just people realizing that something was wrong and it needs to be fixed and that the voters and citizens of this county need to trust their vote. This is how Pueblo, Colorado responds to things that matter. They set aside different ideologies, platforms, and personalities and take on the problem. They all know that winning by deceit is not a victory. We have let this office off the hook too many times. Mr. Ortiz has sullied the office of clerk and recorder with his brand of cavalier complacency. Citizens have waited months to get tags for their car or equipment resulting in more tax revenue lost or postponed by that office. Efforts to get answers have been met with out-right hostility and confrontational gesturing. He has had 16 years to make an impact and set standards and to have this kind of result is indicative of his ability. Enough already. The citizens and candidates hurt by his actions decided to take a stand. It was not about party. So a Democrat, Republican and an independent struck a blow for election integrity and the citizens should know that the Home of Hero’s is exactly that. Home to all hero’s no matter the brand. by K. ANCIENT FAERIE LORE: FAERIE HERBS AND POTIONS

Situated in Mont St. Michael Bay, its proximity to France is only 30 minutes away. A quieter tourist haven from its larger/sister isle of Jersey, where many of my family still reside. Guernsey is unhurried with a slower pace of living. Hallowed ground are these magical isles, with many historic events of witchcraft, and superstitions.
THE LEGEND. Once again our narrative detours from imaginative concepts of goblins, faeries, superstitions and a variety of topics. Nevertheless, enlightenment is our mission, and a primary priority. How many of you know of the 'healing' qualities of certain people? Unlike myths and misconceptions, this phenomenon is acknowledged over the ages by actual undeniable facts, verbal and written. No better way forward than addressing the 'gift of healing.' An actual unspoken capability/talent of the greatest magnitude. Our story begins with a tiny island of just thirty point twelve square miles, located off the coast of Normandy/France… my own mother's birth place. It's part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey and British Crown Dependency. Guernsey is the second largest isle in the English Channel. Apart from its own, ancient
almost extinct language, mainly English and French is spoken. Situated in Mont St. Michael Bay, its proximity to France is only 30 minutes away. A quieter tourist haven from its larger/sister isle of Jersey, where many of my family still reside. Guernsey is unhurried with a slower pace of living. Hallowed ground are these magical isles, with many historic events of witchcraft, and superstitions. (We'll explore this another time.) Books are written establishing undeniable actualities, which occurred in Jersey and Guernsey over the years. My own award winning biography "Intermission a Place in Time" begins with the Nazi takeover of Guernsey. In the year nineteen forty, bombers besieged the once calm scenery and good-natured islanders, killing forty four locals and injuring many more, but that's another story. After my grandmother's death at age thirty-five, mum's father deposited his children in an orphanage. Days before WW2 began, due to a dreadful childhood in Guernsey, my mother left for London with hopes of also locating her fiancée. Sadly, he was already an early casualty of the war. He was dead. The seventh child of a seventh child my mother was extremely psychic, though never failing to undermine her own psychic ability. She was born in St. Peter Port Guernsey, and 'is also characterized in my book. Coincidently at a later date,
another spiritual soul born in St. Peter Port during the sixties was Linda, the miraculous child of our story, born with the capability of healing. (Linda's spirit would eventually deeply touch my mother.) Born with hydrocephalus (water on the brain) baby Linda suffered with spina bifida, also her legs were paralyzed. According to hospital staff, her life expectancy was allegedly only for a few more hours. Linda was given last rights upon her birth. Linda's head enlarged to gigantic proportions, therefore doctors, nurses and family prepared for her early demise. Strangely, earlier in the day her dad witnessed a glowing golden light and sounds of rushing water in his home. Immediately he knew Linda would survive for several more years. He rushed into the ward, where stunned staff stood astounded at her bedside. She apparently now was fine. Linda returned home. Now seventeen months old and after multiple surgeries Linda began her preordained albeit short life. Astonishingly this tiny youngster could 'see' pain, and indicate its location, thus avoiding extracurricular operations on countless people: a lifesaver saver for many. Linda was a true legend. Stay focused on this story, and I shall return next month with Linda's short five-year biography…a story of faith for today and always…

INFLATION ARRIVES AT A BAD TIME FOR DEMOCRATS WAUSAU, Wis. — The reminder, every time they drive down the street, of how high gasoline prices are. The delays in home construction and renovation because of supply-chain disruptions. The hike in the cost of a summertime respite at the lake. The ripple effects of a 5.4 percent increase in the price of dairy items on a state whose economy depends in large measure on that sector of the economy. To say nothing of the cost of groceries. You think things are tough for the Democrats right now? That’s nothing. Wait till Tuesday. Then things will really get bad. Think of it as the Republicans’ silent frontporch campaign, their most effective in decades. Here’s why: Americans will go to their front porches. They will fish in their mailboxes and
extract the daily post, which will include their 401(k) retirement-savings statements. The contents of those envelopes will be — metaphorically, of course, but stunningly — thinner.
This fall’s midterm congressional elections will be about many things. The Supreme Court last month thrust abortion rights to the front ranks of next month’s party primaries here and of November’s general election nationwide; nearly threefifths of Wisconsin voters believe abortion should be legal in virtually every case, according to the respected Marquette University Law School Poll, which released its survey two days before the high court overturned Roe v. Wade late last month. Republicans this summer are choosing between construction executive Tim Michels, who has the endorsement of Donald Trump, and former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch for the party’s gubernatorial nomination. The state’s voters will determine the future of GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, who has questioned the legitimacy of Joe Biden’s presidency. But here, as elsewhere, it’s the economy. The president knows gasoline prices and inflation are dangerous for an incumbent president. He went to Washington, D.C., in 1973, during the early energy crisis. In his first decade on Capitol Hill, he watched inflation soar and saw Gerald R. Ford struggle with it. He witnessed how it led to the presidency of Jimmy Carter, which in turn also fell victim to inflation and to a presidential candidate, former Gov. Ronald Reagan, who knew the answer when he asked the famous question in his 1980 debate with Carter: “Are you better off today than you were four
years ago?” That is a question Biden will face if he seeks reelection. All the indicators signal trouble for the Democrats on the economy. Nearly three-fifths of Americans now think that rising prices are a crisis, not just a problem. That’s up from 49 percent in a late April 2022 Quinnipiac Poll. A University of Michigan consumer sentiment study reached its lowest level since it began surveying in 1952, with four-fifths of Americans expressing pessimism about the economy. A study by Civic Science found that more than 9 of 10 American adults are at least somewhat concerned about inflation — and that nearly two-thirds are saying they are “very concerned.” Two-fifths believe the Biden administration is the biggest cause of this distress. Of all the crises battering the Democrats, inflation may be the most dangerous. The Republicans won’t have to reach far for their evidence. It’s in a Bureau of Labor Statistics report, and it makes for sobering reading:
Fuel oil up 10.7 percent year to year. Gasoline up 48.7 percent. Groceries up 11.9 percent. Housing up 5.5 percent. Retail sales were down in May for the first time this year. In all, inflation is up 8.6 percent nationally year over year. In the Midwest region that includes Wisconsin, the figure is 8 percent, with prices in the energy sector here growing by 13.2 percent in May alone. “Inflation isn’t just about rising prices — it’s about rising anxiety,” says Christine Whelan, director of the Money, Relationships and Equality Initiative at the University of Wisconsin. “Inflation, and the Fed’s re-

sponse to combat it, will compound our uncertainties about the future.” The public-opinion specialists Seymour Martin Lipset and William Schneider learned this while examining how inflation, which in 1960 was at a mere 1.4 percent, jumped to 13.3 percent in a two-decade period. The effect of that rise was staggering. “A high rate of inflation,” they wrote, “appears to lower the public expectations of the future in all respects: for their own lives, for the country as a whole, or the economy.” So rising gas prices mean folks here are driving on cruise control at 50 mph to save a few cents on gas during the morning commute. “Looking for a steak for your summer barbecue?” Whelan asks. “Hold on to your wallet.”
