(PUEBLO, CO) – A pioneering evangelist and publisher started Senior Beacon in Colorado Springs in late 1981. His name? Gerry Bliese and he was a dynamo of a man. Gerry passed away in the late 1990s but his legacy was cemented. He was a force of nature! He not only was a whirlwind in his faith but in being able to persuade people that Jesus was the Man! He could speak in tongues almost at will and he knew the Bible inside and out, backward and forward. He
and his wife whose name is also Gerry (Geraldine) were the parents of 6 children. He was deeply involved in the Insurance business but Jesus wanted him to do more and he did and quite magnificently. This is where Senior Beacon comes into the picture. Gerry had enough of being a top-notch insurance salesman and as he became more and more involved with the Word of God he decided it was time to leave insurance and publish a newspaper ▶ SEE COLA, PAGE 21

Gerry thought that since he did so well in the Colorado Springs market why not expand to other markets, not only in Colorado, but wherever he could get a foothold. He helped start Senior Beacon nationally in Washington, D.C. Buffalo, NY, New Hampshire, Austin, TX., Indianapolis, Indiana and in Colorado in Arvada, Grand Junction and
Colorado Springs Sun morning newspaper owned by Republican Senator Bill Armstrong's family, was friendly with Gerry Bliese. Gerry told Dennis about his plan to expand Senior Beacon and wondered if he knew anyone in Pueblo that might take the plunge. Gerry contacted me and I took the position and the chance to make Senior Beacon here and in Fremont County a newspaper that would serve the senior community throughout the area. That was in January of 1982 and the next month Senior Beacon was born from Pueblo throughout Fremont

4 Actions to Take with Your Investments what will investors do and what will you do during these times?
RONALD S. PHILLIPS Author of two books, teacher & trusted columnist
ARE WE FAIR-WEATHER INVESTORS? The current record-breaking returns started almost a decade ago. We’ve made lots and lots of money. Why did we make big gobs of dough? In my opinion, there’s an unwritten understanding between investors and the markets. The market welcomes us on its rollercoaster ride and we agree to fasten-up and hang on tight until the ride stops. This ride is ownership in the capitalist system of profits and growth.
T
he markets have continued their near-nine year “super bull” run. Yet stocks, before Russia-Ukraine, started experiencing volatility and weakness and even (gasp) down days. Before the last few months no amount of what’s normally bad news could derail this ride! It was extraordinary. Now, especially with international problems and domestic inflation, we’re back to the markets actually dropping. The big question, though, is
The last nine years the rollercoaster was an absolute kiddie ride with barely a move down. Even the bear market (remember those?) was barely a month long. A bear market! We’ve been riding steadily up and it’s easy to get comfortable and forget our agreement with the market: stay on the ride. After all, what’s the alternative? If we go extreme and buy cash or CDs then we get almost zero return and with inflation we actually get negative returns. That’s out. Or we can buy bonds and get decent returns and income. But how would
we feel getting five percent for the year and someone’s stock is up 43 percent? Most folks wouldn’t have been happy with all bonds during this great market. We would have heard and seen our family and friends making buckets full of money. That’s out, too.
So being in the equity markets is important and, arguably, very essential, even for retirees.
In general, we should all seek higher-then-average income from our investments. This can provide needed income, create a larger cash position over time for your portfolio, and help manage risk.
STAY IN THE MARKETS FOREVER? The short answer is “yes.” In some way, most investors should be in the markets. Even more so now that we have rampant inflation. Stocks and real estate have historically been great at keeping up with inflation. But there are many ways to play this ride.
3. Profit from volatility. This step involves a couple of sophisticated tools that are best used by professionals. The investment markets are very creative. For example, they’ve created an index that actually tracks volatility. It’s called the VIX and you can invest into a fund that mimics that index. So you can, at times, make money while others are losing in the market. This is NOT a longterm investment. It’s a depreciating asset that is best used in times like this and, again, with professional help.
During a bull market growth leads the way. Things like tech, smaller companies, emerging markets and technologies, and more aggressive sectors tend to do well and even really well, often outperforming the market in general. As things get tough different stock areas and different countries can take the lead. IS THERE ANYTHING TO DO OR CHANGE? The short answer is “yes.” There’re many things to change:
CONVENIENT LOCATION!
“I chose Villa Pueblo because of the closeness to everything here. It's next door to my bank and Walgreens. Everything that I need is close.” O.A
1. It’s smart to sell gains that you’ve experienced up until now. We don’t want to let the rollercoaster take away our money. If you’re sitting on profits, you might want to sell the gains and even keep the underlying investment for possible future growth. 2. For your stock exposure consider shifting a good

4. The fourth course is “safety soup.” Yes, a corny name, but maybe useful. I’ve “seen the light”…of very boring government bonds. In the past I barely recommended this asset class. But now I see the worth of U.S. Treasuries to potentially hold value in downturns. It’s not a guar-

“The food is good. The service is wonderful. The staff are wonderful. They're willing to listen to complaints when you have them. I play the piano down in the lobby. We're starting a sing-along. Now that COVID is getting a little better and we've all been vaccinated, we're able to go back and do music again.” E.P.
All utilities (except telephone & internet) Two meals a day Weekly housekeeping (and flat linen) Free scheduled transportation Complimentary use of washers & dryers
Another strategy is to sell options on investments. This is a highly skilled technique done by pros but can minimize some risks, minimize time in the markets, and also make extremely high incomes when the rollercoaster is whirling.

chunk from growth to value. Things like consumer staples (think groceries and utilities), high-dividend stocks or funds, undervalued areas and sectors. This takes some research and thinking but it’s a known cycle. Growth switches with value as the leader in returns. Growth has had a long run and maybe value is up next. At least you should get higher income, which can offset volatility and downturns.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE CAVE JAMES R. GRASSO Former Chief Cook & Bottle Washer
S
orry I missed you last month. Too busy celebrating my 40th year with Senior Beacon. Plus, I remember the old saw "Absence makes the heart grow fonder!" Ho! Ho! Ho! Oops, wrong season. So here goes: "When youth departs, will wisdom be enough?" When Winston Churchill said this to his wife, he meant that he was no longer young but he hoped he had become wise enough to lead the country against the Axis powers of WWII. His answer was a
resounding Yes! But I'd like to explore in general terms as a jumping off point for aging adults and their unique perspective of what comes next. This is a private and sometimes nuclear subject to wade into among friends, families and acquaintances, but much easier with a captive audience. This way, I get to express my opinion with no interruptions and no breakage on my thought process. Because at this age of forgetfulness, it's easy to lose your place! Those of us who have been given a "full" life in terms of life's experiences have the unique opportunity to make the right choices to face what's next with dignity, purpose and calmness. To get to that plane in life I stumbled into a quote from the Bible in which a father was at the end of his rope with his child that was possessed by a demon. So the man pleaded to Jesus, after having His apostles try and fail to make the demon(s) leave his son. Now it should be remembered that this incident happened right after the Transfiguration which has been stated to be the "de facto" moment that showed Jesus was indeed the Son of God. Jesus was actually interacting with two long-dead prophets Elijah and Moses as Peter, James and John were the witnesses to this event. Bible scholars say this (Transfiguration) was the exact moment that
March 2022 - Senior Beacon - Page 3 proved to all that Jesus was indeed the Christ who came to reopen the gates of heaven upon his death and resurrection. But Jesus calmly asked the man among all the hubbub what was wrong with his son and the man told Him his son became deaf and muted and fell into seizures that would distort him as if he were dead. The father was at his wits end and I'm sure most of us have had those times in our lives when you hit the wall with nowhere to turn. The man told Jesus that even His apostles could not drive the demon(s) out of his body. As Jesus listened intently, the father screamed for all to hear, "I Do Believe! Help My Unbelief " to Jesus. Jesus took pity on the man who was desperate and his son who was possessed and in short order the demon(s) was cast out of the man's son with the admonishment to never return to the child. This took place in the life of Jesus. It was written down as so many other incidences in His life were to give us a road map to redemption and help. Remember the words of the man, "I Do Believe! Help My Unbelief!" We who are still here know our destiny. Remember the quote from Churchill about age and wisdom. I hope this written account of what happened just about two thousand years ago becomes "The" part of
your wisdom. Even if there was only 1 in a trillion chance that Jesus was indeed the Son of God in your heart and in your mind, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose by carrying Him with you. "I Do Believe! Help My Unbelief! Oh, I almost forgot. After Jesus had successfully driven the demon(s) out of the boy, His Apostles that were trying their best to do as Jesus did, asked why they failed. Jesus answered them that it took "Prayer" in this instance because the demon was very strong. I think daily prayer is good for everyone all the time but among us "Baby Boomers" and those left from the "Greatest Generation" we should use this Bible story and put it in the Wisdom bank. Godspeed to you and yours! (We'll try the subject of Love next time.)

‘LIGHT FOR THE JOURNEY’
JAN MCLAUGHLIN
Columnist & founder of an international prison ministry
“IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW "
F
or weeks, I’ve struggled for inspiration for my March article. This struggle is familiar. I’ll share a bit of history about Light For The Journey. My relationship with the Senior Beacon and Jim and Jeannie Grasso began in 1998 when Jim asked if I would sell print
ads. Shortly after I started with the paper, the Beacon religion columnist died and for a few years Jim used reruns from the column intitled Living Faith. Jim enjoyed my God stories I shared with him. God was doing amazing things at prison and in my life. In 2002, he asked if I would write a Christian column for the Beacon to replace Living Faith. His request traumatized me. I am a classic Gideon! The fleece goes out. Not just once but three times. I know that writing a monthly column is impossible for Jan, but God promised everything is possible with Him. Therefore, I must have complete reliance on Him. Having written a weekly column, Son Light on the Subject, in a now-defunct newspaper I was familiar with deadline pressures. Surely the Lord would give me material for a monthly column. However, three times the fleece went out. And honestly, I don’t remember what they were. The confidence came when I was talking with a friend about the prospect of writing a monthly column. He encouraged me to accept Jim’s offer. I asked, “What if I run out of stories?” He laughed, “Jan, you will
never run out of stories!” Since life is a story and God is the author, I answered Jim in the affirmative. In October 2002, Light For The Journey was launched albeit with a different name. I labored over a name for column. The article title for that first issue was A Heart at Peace, however, I still didn’t have a title. As I contemplated the many lighthouse stories in my library of memories, the perfect title came to light! Jesus has been the light for my journey since I gave my heart to Him in 1974. He had given me visions of lighthouse scenes to help me in my new walk with Him. The lighthouse became my theme, and I was keenly aware that I am not the light but was simply called to reflect HIS light. Sin will dim the glass and prevent His light from shining brightly. We are, in fact, called to reflect His light. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 KJV). I become frustrated when inspiration for a monthly article is slow in coming and I crash in a panic when the deadline looms. My friend gave me this little quote which is SO me! “I do not procrastinate! I just work better under a deadline-induced panic!” I pray and seek the Lord’s guidance for each monthly content, and He always responds just not always in my time frame. Sometimes He opens the door for a wonderful guest author, which have been several. A few years ago, my husband and I were in Utah after a family
reunion. I was driving sixty on an interstate in our Toyota camper when both right rear tires flew off, dropping the wheels with a thud to the pavement. I managed steer off the highway. The tires were never found, and sparks from the metal wheels hitting the pavement created a weed fire. A patrolman came to the scene and remarked, “I can’t believe this thing didn’t roll or flip over.” A woman and her daughter driving behind us witnessed the incident. They stopped to check on us and were amazed the camper hadn’t flipped. When I told my sister what happened, I added, “We are safe. God was just giving me a new story for Light For The Journey.” She retorted, “Did He have to make it so dramatic?” The story was amazing and clear evidence of God’s protection. After writing Light For The Journey for four years the light dawned. I said to the Lord, “I’m writing a book, aren’t I?” Yes, as a matter of fact, two books and another one or two in the making. The first, printed in 2012 has the same title as this article contains my personal life stories and testimonies. The second, Rescuing Treasures of Darkness was published in 2014 and contains remarkable prison and mission stories. The inspiring content includes a terrific collection of prisoner poetry and testimonies. These books are available for $10.00 plus shipping. Please contact me to purchase the books. Q& A...With Mara Duchanin How long have you been in business?
I have been in real estate since 2001, and in business for myself since 2007. My life has been consumed with selling and financing since shortly after High School (at least a few weeks ago!). I love finding the right opportunity for the right customer – it gets me going in the morning. What did you do before this business? Before this business, I was involved in sales and finance on a number of levels, including transportation and heavy equipment. I came to real estate because it’s been my lifelong passion.
Why are you in business?
I’m in business to help people maximize opportunities. Whether it’s putting a single mother in her first home, or helping a retired vet downsize, I think putting people in touch with the right opportunity is why God put me on this planet. How did you get started in this business? I got started in this business because my husband got tired of me talking about it! Seriously, I see real estate sales and financing as a God-calling, and I’m glad he called me to do it.
Can you describe your customers?
In Pueblo, there’s quite a mix. There are those that are relocating from the North of the State, or from other pricy States to get more bang for their buck in Pueblo. Also, we have a large number of retirees coming to enjoy Pueblo’s relatively mild climate. We also see many who list their property to move elsewhere to be with family.
Why do your customers select you over your competitors?
Customers select me over competitors because of a few important factors. First, 24/7 access is not a cliché for me – I really do it. I keep two cell phones and an iPad with me at all times and I communicate. I shoot straight. The Real Estate field is fraught with misperception and technicalities. I break it down into understandable bites so there’s no confusion.
Where do you see your business in the next year?
The clichéd answer is “growing immensely.” However my business is God centered, and if he chooses to grow it, I’m happy to follow his plan! Right now, the market is growing and there’s no end in sight. I have plenty to do, but for me, the passion of helping people find the right opportunity drives me to expand my efforts.
Whom do you seek advice from for your business?
Of course, I ask God for his wisdom daily (likely hourly), but that’s not the entire answer. I have a team of mentors and support staff at EXP Realty Group, a national organization, that are literally available around the clock. I’m very blessed to have experts available on such short notice.
How has technology, such as comput-
ers and the internet, impacted how you conduct business?
Like so many of my peer group, computers and technology were introduced to me late in life. I’ve remained in-step with the changes, and use high tech throughout the day to get work done. I don’t add programs indiscriminately and won’t be held hostage to the blue screen, but I use the tools liberally to get work done. These days, it’s hard to image going without.

SPECIAL TO THE SENIOR BEACON FROM THE EDITORS OF ANDREWS MCMEEL The Neighbors
In the Bolivian city of El Alto, David Choque has alarmed his neighbors with his new decorating scheme, Reuters reported. Choque, a miner, hired an artist to create sculptures of long-horned skeletal devils from cement and wood and mount them on the outside of his home. Choque told Reuters that the sculptures hearken to life in Bolivian mines centuries ago, when indigenous men were forced into digging for silver. Colonial masters would use devil images to scare the men into working. But some neighbors fear that his decor signals satanic worship. Maria Laurel said she has heard about naked rituals in Choque's house: "The truth is, it frightens me." Choque pooh-poohs this idea: "Closed-minded people will think it's something supernatural, but people need to open their minds and see it as a tourist attraction, something that can improve the area."
More Than They Bargained For
Riders in the Bianchi Rock Cobbler, a California bike race known to be "stupidly hard," expected the
usual sore muscles after the 80mile off-roader on Feb. 12. They did not expect, however, neck and back injuries suffered after being attacked by a bull during the race. Tony Inderbitzin told KMPH-TV that he did see the animal, but he usually bikes right by cows with no problem: "As I got 10 to 15 yards from him, he turned ... squared up, and I had maybe a second to brace myself or do anything. It's a case of a mistaken identity from a cow to a bull." The bull, after dislodging him from his bike, flipped Inderbitzin up in the air. Two other riders were also attacked but were able to finish the race and celebrate with beers.
Inexplicable
When police officers in Orem, Utah, pulled over Victor Chavez-Zuniga, 27, for a broken headlight on Feb. 9, they discovered that he had several outstanding warrants, The Smoking Gun reported. As a result, they searched him and found something "extra" in his wallet: a severed finger in a cloth wrap, which had "what appeared to be pus and blood on it"

and "was beginning to turn green and the fingernail appeared to be decayed." Well, gross. Officer Bryce Mondragon also noticed a "foul smell." Unfortunately, the mystery lives on: The court filing does not say who the finger belonged to or why Chavez-Zuniga had it, but he was held on a charge of desecration of a dead human body, among other charges. On Feb. 10, as a 38-year-old man walked with a friend and his two children in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, he felt an unexplained sharp pain in his lower body. Later, at the emergency room, doctors discovered he had been shot, Oddity Central reported. But the man and his companions heard no gunshot and saw no one with a firearm: "An accident, a crime, a shot fired from afar -- we're not ruling anything out at the moment," said Matthias Graf, a police spokesman. Investigators are hoping the public can help; for now, they believe an air gun or a small-caliber weapon was used from a great distance, as a larger bullet would have caused more damage. The man is recovering.

Perhaps Michael Brandon Demarre, 32, has never heard of social media. On Feb. 12, Demarre was charged in federal court in Oregon for interfering with a flight crew in an incident that happened the day before on a Delta flight between Salt Lake City and Portland, Oregon. During that trip, KSL-TV reported, Demarre allegedly "removed the plastic covering of the emergency exit handle and pulled on the handle with his full body weight," witnesses said. Demarre was moved to the back of the plane and restrained until the flight landed and police took him into custody. As he explained his actions, Demarre said he grabbed the handle "so other passengers would video him, thereby giving him the opportunity to share his thoughts on COVID-19 vaccines." He will remain in custody until his next court hearing.

SPECIAL TO THE SENIOR BEACON FROM THE EDITORS OF ANDREWS MCMEEL ER doctor at UF Health Leesburg in Florida, was charged on Feb. 16 with three counts of battery after he allegedly struck a patient repeatedly, the Naples Daily News reported. Nwabuko reportedly was trying to confirm his suspicions that the patient was faking a medical condition. As such, he grabbed her hand and struck her in the face with it multiple times, leading to her IV line being ripped out and blood covering her face and arm. She was also bruised around her eye. One witness said Nwabuko was laughing and mocking the patient; finally, nurses intervened and stopped the doctor. In a curious statement, UF Health identified Nwabuko as "not employed by UF Health," but said they could not provide any more information.

A French dad in the town of Messanges was desperate to limit his kids' internet time, so he employed the use of a scrambler, which blocks connection to the web, the New York Post reported on Feb. 17. Unfortunately, the powerful tool also blocked the connections of the rest of the town and beyond -- and now he faces up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $34,000. Authorities said the unnamed man just wanted to block the internet between midnight and 3 a.m., but when neighbors started reporting their outages, the local service providers investigated.

HAVE AT ‘EM, ANTIFA! THE NEW FREE SPEECH LIBERALS ARE BUSY INSTITUTIONALIZING THE CENSORSHIP OF CONSERVATIVES THROUGHOUT THE NATION. In 2017,
as fear and loathing of Donald Trump seized the nation, a U.S. mayor got a four-star resort to cancel a conservative conference by threatening to withdraw police and fire protection. With all the media blubbering about “attempts to DESTROY our democracy” and violations of “constitutional norms,” it’s remarkable that this Howitzer blast to the First Amendment has received barely any attention, much less the front-page coverage it deserves, not even from the conservative press. The banned conference, you see, was about immigration. Wow, our elites really don’t want Americans thinking about immigration! (Remember, kids: It’s a right-wing conspiracy theory — and racist, to boot! — to think that liberals are using mass immigration to change the country.) The sponsor of the confer-
ence was VDARE, a long-standing immigration website espousing ideas that are basically identical to Trump’s 2016 immigration promises — both before he made them and after he broke them. The main difference is that the arguments on VDARE are expressed in proper English, and the writers actually believe what they say. As the 2016 election demonstrated, these ideas are quite popular with a certain segment of voters. Not everyone, just enough to elect a president no one thought could ever be elected, who was loathed by the media, and who was outspent 2-to-1. Named for Virginia Dare, the first European born on U.S soil, VDARE promotes the novel idea that U.S. immigration policy should benefit Americans. (Obviously, that includes white, Hispanic, Asian and black Americans — whom, by the way, mass immigration hurts the most.) Naturally, therefore, it has been designated a “white supremacist” website by the country’s largest hate group, the Southern Poverty Law Center. Four months after VDARE signed a contract to hold its annual conference at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, the local mayor, John Suthers — nominee for the Liz Cheney Profiles in Courage Award! — issued a public announcement accusing VDARE of engaging in “hate speech” and urging the resort to cancel (OK, whatever), but also vowing to deny “any support or resources to this event” if the resort honored the contract. Hey antifa, in case anybody’s interested — if you firebomb this conference, we won’t be sending any firetrucks. And if you want to attack the attendees, there won’t be any police showing up to stop you.
Expiration: March 31st, 2022
The next day, the resort canceled the contract and, per the agreement, paid a kill fee. VDARE sued the mayor, alleging a violation of its First Amendment rights. Here’s the frightening part: The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit (one Obama judge and two G.W. Bush judges; one dissent) found for the mayor on the grounds that it’s possible that the resort canceled NOT because the mayor announced that there would be no police or fire protection, but because of … CHARLOTTESVILLE! Which VDARE had nothing to do with. (Again, VDARE is an immigration website, not a street protest organization.) If the Supreme Court does not agree to take up this case and brutally slap down the 10th Circuit, “free speech” will be officially limited to speech acceptable to antifa, working hand-in-hand with liberal mayors and governors. I have long maintained that the left never truly cared about free speech. They merely pretended to in order to protect the people they actually supported: communists and pornographers. That was the sort of “speech” that used to get banned. But today, the speech that gets banned includes statements like: There are only two genders; Maybe we shouldn’t defund the police; Affirmative action is unjust; Masks don’t work — No they work! No, they don’t work! Also, apparently, speech asserting that mass immigration has not been an unalloyed good for our country, contributing to our prosperity, cohesiveness and happiness. One of Justice William Brennan’s hallowed quotes is: “[T] he government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself

offensive or disagreeable.” Those stirring words were in defense of flag-burning. And here’s a famous one from Justice William O. Douglas: “Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.” That was about communists. But ever since conservative speech became the target of censors, liberals adore governmental suppression of speech. (The one, lone exception that proves the rule: Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and author of “HATE: Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship.”) As the 10th Circuit explained, conservative speakers should have no expectation of police and fire protection. Specifically, the majority opinion declared: “What VDARE wanted, it had no right to demand — municipal resources to monitor a private entity’s private event.” (Monitor? How about “That the city not refuse to send police officers and firetrucks”?) So I guess we can forget that sonorous horse crap about the First Amendment protecting ideas that “society finds … offensive or disagreeable.” The left’s new model is a public-private partnership to prohibit speech unacceptable to Joy Ann Reid. Henceforth, blue states and cities will be free to shut down conservative speakers, MAGA meetings, Daughters of the American Revolution gatherings or anti-mask protests. Some jackass mayor will claim that the conservatives are threatening to engage in “hate speech” and deny them police and fire protection (then sit back and wait for the accolades from the media). With midterms approaching, conservatives are feeling giddy. Everything the left holds dear — open borders, “racial equity,” Defund the Police, critical race theory — is toxic to voters. Woo hoo! We’re winning! Not so fast, patriots. While you fist-pump, liberals are busy institutionalizing the censorship of conservatives throughout the nation. You want to talk about “institutional bias”? How about the systemic bias against any ideas unacceptable to progressives being baked into American society? If the Supreme Court fails to overturn the outrageous opinion in VDARE Foundation v. City of Colorado Springs, free speech’s gravestone will read: “Bedrock principle of a nation; 1791-2022. COPYRIGHT 2022 ANN COULTER

Half of All Social God’s Purpose for Security Households Your Life May Pay Tax on Benefits
(Washington, DC) – Almost half of all households that receive Social Security benefits might pay taxes this year on a portion of their benefits, according to a national survey by The Senior Citizens League (TSCL). “Making matters worse, the survey indicates that retired and disabled taxpayers are more uncertain than ever about their tax liability this year,” says Mary Johnson, a Social Security analyst for The Senior Citizens League. About half of survey participants (51 percent) said they did not expect to pay taxes on their benefits. “That’s pretty much in line with what we expected,” Johnson notes. The other half, however, were much more conflicted than usual about whether their benefits would be taxable or not. Early survey findings indicate that less than one-quarter of survey participants, (24 percent), said they would definitely owe taxes on their benefits, versus the 47 percent who reported paying taxes on Social Security benefits in a survey conducted after tax season, last fall. There’s also considerable uncertainty about the potential amount of tax on Social Security benefits. About 42 percent of those who thought they would owe taxes on benefits thought their tax obligation would be higher than last year. Fifty - three percent, however, weren’t sure if the amount would be higher or lower. In 2020, the Congressional Research Service estimated that the average amount of federal income taxes owed on Social Security benefits would be about 6.6 percent of Social Security benefits. While the tax varies by income, households affected were expected to pay, on average, an estimated $3,211. Unlike federal income taxes, the revenues received from taxation of Social Security benefits are credited to the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds. “Even more unlike other federal income taxes, Congress has never adjusted the income thresholds that subject Social Security benefits to taxation since the tax became effective in 1984,” Johnson notes. The lack of adjustment has led to both a growing number of Social Security recipients who pay the tax and a growing amount of their benefit that is subject to taxation. When the tax on benefits became law, fewer than 10% of beneficiaries paid income taxes on their benefits. Up to 85% of Social Security ben-
efits can be included in the taxable income of recipients whose “provisional” income exceeds the income limits. Provisional income is determined by adding the adjusted gross income, plus otherwise tax-exempt income, plus 50% of Social Security benefits. (AGI + tax-exempt income + 50% of Social Security benefits = provisional income). Social Security benefits are taxable for single filers with provisional incomes of more than $25,000 and married couples filing jointly with provisional incomes of more than $32,000. “Had these income thresholds been adjusted for inflation since 1984, the $25,000 level would today be about $68,400, and the $32,000 level would be $87,550,” says Johnson. Social Security Trustees have estimated in the 2021 annual report that the Social Security Trust Fund will receive $34.5 billion in revenues from the taxation of Social Security benefits in 2021 and that will jump to more than $45 billion for 2022. “That big jump is primarily due to the rising number of new retirees with higher incomes and does not factor in the impacts of the 5.9 percent cost-of-living adjustment received in 2022 because that affects taxes paid in the 2023 tax season,” Johnson notes. Johnson recommends that Social Security recipients remember to check the impact of this year’s 5.9% COLA on next year’s estimated tax obligation. “It may be preferable to have taxes withheld throughout the year to avoid a big bill at tax time or worse, an underpayment penalty,” Johnson says. Social Security recipients may request money to be withheld from Social Security benefits by filing Form W-4V with the Social Security Administration, requesting to have 7%, 10%, 12% or 22% of their monthly benefit withheld for taxes. Retirees can also have taxes withheld from other income, such as IRA withdrawals or a pension. The Senior Citizens League is working for passage of Social Security legislation that would adjust the income thresholds that subject Social Security benefits to taxation. “This tax on benefits was never intended to affect low and middle income retired and disabled Americans,” Johnson says.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
It is so important that we know that God loves us and has a plan and purpose for our life. God created each of us and He does not make mistakes! We are unique and He has a unique plan for each of our lives. Let us look at a few ways in knowing and fulfilling His plan for our lives. 1- Know and believe that God has a plan for your life. Jer. 29:11 2- Spend time with the Lord. As you spend time with Him, He will reveal His plan and purpose for you. Ps. 37:4 3- When you have His vision for your life, write it down. Keep a journal of what the Lord gives to you. Hab. 2:2 4- Believe and trust that God will bring it to pass and that He will provide what you need for His plans to be fulfilled. Heb. 11:11
5- Make plans to fulfill the purpose and plan as the Lord lays it out for you. Forget the past and move forward, do not let fear stand in your way of fulfilling His purpose for you. Phil. 3:13,14 “For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” Hab. 2:3

Raising Awareness of Parkinson’s Non-Motor Symptoms Via Storytelling
(StatePoint) With the help of an Airstream trailer traveling the country, people with Parkinson’s disease will soon have a unique opportunity to record and share their experiences and personal stories as part of a program called “Yours, Truly.” Non-motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, as a whole, can be more troublesome than motor symptoms, in terms of quality of life. The stigma around these symptoms may also create challenges. As a recent survey shows, caregivers to those living with Parkinson’s disease psychosis are hesitant to discuss Parkinson’s non-motor symptoms involving psychosis with physicians in the presence of patients so as not to embarrass them. “Patients and caregivers are reluctant to talk about non-motor symptoms out of concern for their loved ones,” said Leilani Pearl, senior vice president of communications at the Parkinson’s Foundation. “Having a place to hear and share the unique experiences of others living with Parkinson’s will increase awareness of symptoms and may help others get the care they need.”
“Parkinson’s disease affects about 1 million people in the United States, which may present with both motor and non-motor symptoms. Around half of the people living with Parkinson's disease may develop hallucinations or delu-
sions over the course of their disease, but the majority of people don't proactively tell their physicians about these symptoms. That’s why I believe it’s so important to share experiences across languages and cultures,” said Dr. Gus Alva, assistant professor at University of California, Riverside Medical School, Department of Neuroscience.
The storytelling campaign is in collaboration with StoryCorps, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.” Sponsored by Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc., “Yours, Truly” invites people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners to record interviews about their lives and preserve their story in StoryCorps’ national archive.
Signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can vary, with people experiencing both motor symptoms (such as slowness of movement, resting tremors, limb stiffness and trouble with balance) and non-motor symptoms (such as constipation, impaired bladder control, anxiety and depression, loss of mental sharpness/acuity, hallucinations and delusions). When people living with Parkinson’s disease experience hallucinations and/or delusions related to their condition, it is known as Parkinson’s disease psychosis. A
hallucination is a perception-like experience that occurs without an external stimulus and is seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled. A delusion is a false, fixed belief despite evidence to the contrary. To share or view a story, access educational resources in English or Spanish, or to find out where you can visit the StoryCorps airstream, visit www.YoursTrulyPDP.com. Already, several Parkinson’s families have shared their stories and added their voices to StoryCorps’ national archive.

In the depths of the 2009 bear market, when the S&P 500 dropped almost in half (!) some of these Treasury funds were not just holding value but were up 30, 40 percent or more. In the recent 2020 bear market and the past few months these and similarly conservative investments held strong and even went up. The “safety soup” part is just my mixture of various bonds. Maybe it’s some inflation bonds, short- and long-range T-bonds, and a few other ingredients. But this mix is now anywhere from 15 to 25 percent of client portfolios. Again, no guarantees but these changes and pivots could help you smooth out the rollercoaster ride.

Step by Step: 6 Tips for Preventing Falls
(STATE POINT)—Few things
are more important to older adults than their independence -- being able to do what they’d like when they’d like. But independence can be fleeting. Something unexpected, like a fall, can change everything. That’s why it’s important for older adults and their loved ones to take steps now to reduce the risk of a fall from happening. Three million older people are treated in emergency rooms each year because of injuries caused by falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thankfully, many falls can be prevented with a little forethought and advance planning, according to Dr. J.B. Sobel. Dr. Sobel recommends older adults take the following precautions to prevent falls and increase their peace of mind. GET AN ANNUAL EYE EXAM. More than 12 million Americans aged 40 years and older experience vision impairment, putting them at greater risk of falling. It’s important for them to get an annual eye exam and make sure that they wear their glasses as instructed. Many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans provide some vision coverage at no extra cost. REVIEW MEDICATIONS. People tend to take more medications as they age. Some of these medications, or a combination of medications, can cause dizziness or confusion, resulting in falls. Seniors should talk to their doctor or pharmacist about the medicines they are taking, including overthe-counter medications, regarding any interactions or unwanted side effects. DO STRENGTH AND BALANCE EXERCISES. Regular exer-
cise strengthens muscles and improves balance and flexibility, helping reduce the chance of falls. Many MA plans include a fitness benefit at no extra cost. The benefit may include kits, bands and videos that can be used at home to help limit exposure to COVID-19, while achieving the benefits of exercise. LIMIT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect a person’s balance and reflexes, leading to a fall. According to the National Institute on Aging, alcohol is a factor in 60% of falls in older Americans. For those individuals who may need it, Medicare covers alcohol abuse screening, counseling and treatment. Please be sure to discuss these types of issues with your doctor. ENSURE A SAFE HOME. Seniors can benefit from having grab bars installed inside and outside the bathtub tub or shower and next to the toilet, as well as having railings installed on both sides of stairs. Also, potential tripping hazards, such as floor mats, area rugs or extension cords, should be removed or taped down, both inside and outside the home. BE CAREFUL WITH FACE MASKS. Face masks can restrict peripheral vision. When wearing a face mask, make sure it is snug covering both your nose and mouth, and take slow and measured steps. Those who wear glasses should wash the lenses with soap and water (if permitted by the manufacturer), shake off the excess liquid and allow them to air dry. This can help provide a fog barrier. “Today, many older adults take good care of themselves and feel younger than they are,” Sobel said. “They are rightfully proud and don’t want to make concessions for their age. But a fall can

POETRY IN MOTION DINKLAGE SINGING, DAFOE PAINTING, WIVES ADAPTING. CATCH THE LATEST BETTY JO FILM REVIEW. BETTY JO TUCKER Pueblo award winning film critic
S
ometimes a film looks and feels like poetry in motion to me. “At Eternity’s Gate,” a movie with Willem Dafoe as painter Vincent Van Gogh, and “Yesterday,” an offering paying homage to the music of The Beatles, are two recent examples. The latest one is CYRANO, a unique musical starring Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) as Cyrano de Bergerac. You read that last sentence right! Dinklage sings much of the dialogue, and he sounds great. This lively version of the 1897 play by Edmond Ro-
with images that must be seen.
stand was adapted by Erica Schmidt, who just happens to be Dinklage’s wife. And Joe Wright, who gave us a wonderful “Pride & Prejudice” back in 2005, signed on as director. Plus, original music by Bryce Dressen and Aron Dressen as well as lovely performances by Haley Bennett as Roxanne and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Christian (rounding out the story’s love triangle), add to the movie’s high quality. In keeping of the film’s emphasis on Cyrano’s poetry, I had to write the poem below. Music, romance and poetry in CYRANO so beautifully blending together on the screen
Action, drama and humor too all combine to entertain you. Period costumes fascinate. Humanity themes resonate. Casting is the biggest surprise with Peter Dinklage as the prize. A Cyrano with normal nose. Small stature causing him to pose. Hiding his love for dear Roxanne Writing love notes for other man. His pride keeps him from telling her. While watching this, our hearts do stir. A film treasure is CYRANO.
Behold a splendid picture show! Several Cyrano movies have been made in the past. The three I’ve seen are a 1950 production co-starring José Ferrer (who won an Oscar® for his performance) and Mala Powers, a 1987 film titled “Roxanne” with Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah, and a 1990 French offering with Gerard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve. But this new version is the best yet. Perhaps it’s the music and poetry that makes me feel more deeply about what’s happening on screen. I know the powerful emotions that accompany writing and reading poems and listening to music, especially poems and songs about love.

My favorite scene involves a balcony and the three main characters. It’s funny, heartbreaking, and so well-played by Dinklage, Bennett and Harrison Jr. that you might want to see it over and over again. As a dancer during much of my life, I wish “Cyrano” included more dancing, but the dance sequences that made the cut are intriguing and easy on the eye. The Detroit Film Critics Society named Peter Dinklage Best Actor for his outstanding Cyrano performance, and the film earned a well-deserved Oscar® nomination for costume design. Also, this awesome movie ended up as my top film of the year.

What is the Role of a Political Party?
(PUEBLO, CO) Why do we even bother to get involved with the Pueblo County Republican Party? Well, the short answer is to elect republicans. And why is this? So “it” (tyranny, "emergency powers", mandates) doesn’t happen here. Over the past couple of months, your Pueblo County Republican Party (PCRP) leadership has been very involved with the planning and execution of five reorganization meetings. Two of these reorganization meetings were for single county districts (Pueblo). But the other three were for multi-county districts. For example, we had to coordinate with each of the eight counties in House District 62; we had to coordinate with each of the nine counties in House District 47; and we had to coordinate with each of the 27 counties in the Third Congressional District. We are happy to report that our team performed admirably and completed all tasks on time. Yes, nonother than the Chairwoman of the Colorado Republican Party congratulated us on our success! We’ve also been busy with the planning and execution of next week’s caucus, and the planning and execution of next month’s county assembly. On top of all that we’ve also been active in developing content for our website that is under construction, looking at new office space, meeting with donors, planning this year’s Lincoln Day Dinner and other events, and planning and executing training like tomorrow’s. And let’s not forget the mundane tasks of paying utilities' bills, reconciling checkbooks, and buying supplies. Whew! One can tire just from reading all the tasks we’ve done. Yet through it all, one thing has become crystal clear: the role of the political party. Yes, our role is to elect republicans so “it” doesn’t happen here. But how do we do that? That seems to be a source of much confusion. After much thought on the subject, several lessons can be gleaned. What are these lessons? 1. We, the leadership of the PCRP, advance the cause of electing republicans by acting as a husband. What does it mean to husband? The verb husband is, according to Merriam-Webster, “to manage prudently and economically”, and “to use sparingly : CON-
SERVE”. Our role as leadership is to husband the PCRP. We do this by building and developing the infrastructure and the organization so that this funny little thing called “politics” can occur. We provide the environment and the conditions for political victories. And no, it often isn’t very sexy. 2. We, the leadership of the PCRP, must make decisions that are in the best interests of all Pueblo County Republicans. Did you know that as of this writing there are 28,459 registered republicans in Pueblo County? And this number is rising! Each of our actions and every one of our decisions must be made recognizing that all of Pueblo’s republicans are counting on us. We cannot take actions or make decisions that benefit only one or two of our factions, a select few, or even just one “special” republican. The risk to the PCRP to do otherwise is just too great. 3. We, the leadership of the PCRP, advance the cause of electing republicans by not providing campaign management services. Yes, we understand that there are those among us that desire “a more activist PCRP”. But as leaders of the PCRP we are bound by a pledge to be impartial until we actually have a nominee to be the republican standard bearer. Actually, it is in our by-laws that we remain impartial during the primary process. Each and every one of us has imperfections. Some candidates are old, and some are young. Some candidates are short, and some are tall. Some candidates are skinny, and some are fat. Some candidates speak with a golden mouth, and some have a voice that is just plain annoying. But the point is that any candidate who, on their own merits, cannot adequately engage the over 28,000 republican voters and appeal to the electorate at large, will fail. And no amount of money will ever change this. If the PCRP should prematurely back a candidate that the voters simply
dislike, we sabotage our efforts to elect republicans. Unfortunately, this has happened in the past to our republican candidates and the voters simply refused to vote for them. We should never succumb to the temptation to allow a select few choose who our nominees will be. Many folks are passionate about their candidates, and that is fine. But it is not the primary role of the PCRP, or any political party for that matter, to organize opportunities for candidates to engage the voters. Certainly, candidates are always welcome to attend and even speak at our events. But our primary purpose is to do all of the
unsexy things we discussed above, not to make sure that candidates have opportunities to speak to voters. As the leaders of the PCRP, we must recognize that each candidate is responsible for raising their own money and running their individual campaigns to engage the voters. We must understand that each candidate is responsible for making their case and be considered, either in part, or as a whole, by all 28,000 republican voters in Pueblo County. We must allow for the "cream" to rise. Yes, let the cream rise. To force it or assist it to rise can

Workers in Your Home and Social Security Taxes DO YOU PLAN TO PAY a
cleaning person, cook, gardener, babysitter, or other household worker at least $2,400 in 2022? If you will pay at least $2,400 to one person during the year, which may include transportation, meals, and housing, you have additional financial responsibilities to consider. When you pay at least $2,400 in wages to a household worker, you must do all of the following: · Deduct Social Security and Medicare taxes from those wages. · Pay these taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. · Report the wages to Social Security. Accurate reporting is important as employees earn credits toward Social Security benefits and Medicare coverage. You can currently earn Social Security or Medicare credit for every $1,510 in wages that are reported. Generally, people need 10 years of work to qualify for: · Retirement benefits (as early as age 62). · Disability benefits for the worker and the worker’s dependents. · Survivors benefits for the worker’s family. · Medicare benefits. You can learn more about reporting household worker income by reading Household Workers www. ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10021.pdf WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH AND SOCIAL SECURITY Each March, we celebrate Women’s History Month. It is a time to reflect on the achievements of women. Social Security has served a vital role in the lives of women for more than 85 years. Women have longer average life expectancies than men, which means they live more years in retirement and have a greater chance of exhausting other sources of income. It’s important for women to plan early and wisely for retirement. Our retirement pages at www. ssa.gov/retirement provide detailed information about how life events can affect a woman’s Social Security retirement benefits. These events may include marriage, widowhood, divorce, self-employment, government service, and other life or career changes. Your earnings history will determine your future benefits, so we encourage you to verify that the in-
formation we have is correct. You can create your personal my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/ myaccount and review your earnings history. If you find an error in your earnings record, it is important to get it corrected so you receive the benefits you earned when you retire. Our publication, How to Correct Your Social Security Earnings Record at www.ssa.gov/ pubs/EN-05-10081.pdf, provides you with details on how to make a correction. You also can view your Social Security Statement on your my Social Security account, for estimates of future benefits and other important planning information. If you would like to learn more about how we can help women plan for retirement, check out our online booklet, Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know. You can find it at www.ssa.gov/pubs/ EN-05-10127.pdf Please share this information with family and friends.
GUARD YOUR CARD: PROTECT WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU We encourage you not to carry your Social Security card with you every day. The best way to “Guard Your Card” is to keep it in a safe place and share it only when required. In fact, in most cases, just knowing the Social Security number should be enough. In 49 states and the District of Columbia, a Social Security card isn’t required to request a Real ID. Only Pennsylvania requires it. Please be careful about sharing your number when asked for it. You should always ask why your number is needed, how it will be used, and what will happen if you refuse. Also, you shouldn’t carry documents that display your number.
If you need a replacement Social Security card, we make it easy. You may be able to use a person-
al my Social Security account to request a replacement on our website. If you live in one of 46 participating states or the District of Columbia, and are requesting a replacement card with no changes, like a name change, you can use

Unfortunately, sometimes we have to say “NO” to those who have “excellent ideas”. Please don’t take this personally. We simply have to act in the best interests of those 28,459 Pueblo County Republicans. In this era of valid concerns about election integrity, the day may come, and soon, when we, the leadership of the PCRP, may have to challenge an election. The "organic matter will certainly hit the rotating oscillator" when that happens. We’d better have our financial house in order when that day comes...as in wired down tight! Financial discipline is an important aspect of advancing our cause of electing republicans. So, there you have it. Five lessons that the leadership of the PCRP has learned about the role of the Pueblo County Republican Party over the course of the past several months. We want to win elections and set republicans in office as much as you do...maybe even more. Because in doing so we secure our liberty. For this is the role of the Pueblo County Republican Party. To advance this cause, will require all hands-on deck. We must advance this cause so that “it” doesn’t happen here in our beloved United States of America, in our Centennial State, or in our home: Pueblo County.
potentially queer everything we're working for. How else can we field the best candidates? How else can we win the general election? 4. We, the leadership of the PCRP, advance the cause of electing republicans by working in harmony with the factions within our party. Yes, factions are a reality in politics. You can see the various factions at the national level, at the state level, and yes, here in Pueblo County. We remember the Tea Party. Many of us were very involved with the Tea Party. We also learned a few lessons from the Tea Party. You see the Tea Party was a populist faction that sought to “take over”, to various extents, the PCRP. The passion of the Tea Party folks was commendable indeed. Unfortunately, the passion of the Tea Party was not very much appreciated by many of the “traditional” republicans, who didn't like the drama these "tea partyers" manufactured. And so, these “traditional republicans” simply stopped their involvement and stopped writing checks to the PCRP. So, while the Tea Party may have taken over the PCRP, they did so at a terrible price. Such was the price, that the PCRP became impotent for several election cycles. Do we really want to repeat this? Or do we want to build a PCRP that is virile, winning elections and placing republicans in office? We really should learn from Robert Leverington is Chairman of the past and work in harmony with the Pueblo County Republican Party. all the various factions within the Visit https://www.facebook.com/ PCRP so that we can actually elect PuebloGOP or call (719) 295-0600 republicans. International reach more prisoners with the message of freedom through Christ. My heart is flooded with inexpressible joy in walking confidently in the awareness that I am doing the work I was created for. Yes, despite what some may think, I am God’s masterpiece! “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT). For Rick and me, we find it strange to live at a slower pace and not as active as we have been. It’s like having a house full of children and suddenly the nest is empty. The other day I asked Rick, “What are you going to do today?” “Nothing,” he answered. The next day I asked again, “What are you planning to do today?” His answer was the same. “Nothing.” “But you did that yesterday,” I protested. “I know. I’m not finished yet.” We long for the day when we can worship again with our incarcerated brothers and sisters. In the meantime, we are open to whatever God has for us. Life is different but God remains faithful. His plan is perfect, and He will complete what He has begun in us as He promises in Philippians 1:6. © 2022 Jan McLaughlin. ANCIENT FAERIE LORE: FAERIE HERBS AND POTIONS
GLEN VOLLMECKE Author: "Intermission a Place in Time."
This stone was transported by Kenneth King of Dalriada when he moved his capital to Scone 840AD. As expected he'd be enthroned on the Stone of Destiny on Moot Hill at Scone Palace in Perthshire. Bizarrely this piece bears no ornate design nor apparent reason for its compulsory attendance during coronations.
Destiny's stone. While writing our last column I explained connections of stones to superstitions and healing despite the 'stones' visual ostensibly insignificant structure to the naked eye. Which is why opening our mind is essential to this particular revelation. Admittedly despite recent conflicts in London tabloids, connections to the royals of Britain offer great credence/ reliability to my next narrative. Although seemingly just a stone… The Stone of Destiny has participated in many coronations. The Celtic name of a stone with which the true Kings of Scotland have been crowned is 'Lia Fail' the speaking stone. One which can proclaim the chosen king. Originally it was used in crowning ceremonies of Scotland's kings of Dalriada in the west, just north of Glasgow-Argyll. This stone was transported by Kenneth King of Dalriada when he moved his capital to Scone
840AD. As expected he'd be enthroned on the Stone of Destiny on Moot Hill at Scone Palace in Perthshire. Bizarrely this piece bears no ornate design nor apparent reason for its compulsory attendance during coronations. It's quite commonplace measuring 400mm wide 650mm in length and 27mm deep with chisel marks positioned on its flat top. Yet magical, mythical and reverent it remains. Several explanations abound. During biblical times Jacob used it as a pillow. Later at Bethel a pedestal at the ark in the Temple. Another story: the stone travelled from Syria to Egypt by King Gathelus who then fled to Spain as a result of his defeat by the Egyptian army. Additionally, a descendent brought the stone to Ireland, where he was promptly crowned as Ireland's king. Once in this emerald Isle it was then escorted by the Scots to Argyll. Now if you're not thoroughly confused you can only imagine the majesty, pageantry and formalities now linked with our Stone of Destiny. Following up on its next adventure, it remained in Scone until forcedly removed by England's' King Edward first (Hammer of the Scots.) This was soon after his Scottish victories in 1296. Afterwards it was taken to Westminster Abbey in London. Either rumor or
fact we'll never know. Apparently the current Coronation Chair was designed to house this stone and was used in 1301 at the coronation of Edward 11. Later it crowned every consecutive future king and queen of England. Either legend or fact as King Edward approached the palace, the monks of Scone removed the stone, once hiding it they used a replacement with one of similar size and appearance. It was this the English king triumphantly carried back to London. In 1996 10,000 people anxiously lined Edinborough's Royal Mile to witness the return of The Stone of Destiny. Ceremoniously and reverently it was deposited in Scotland after 700 years. Although the Scottish Nationalists originally 'stonenapped' Destiny…Was it the original rock? Either way whatever your beliefs it now resides in Edinborough Castle for all to see…a powerful symbol of Scottish Independence. As a foot note, several years ago I visited the Castle mainly to view the magnificent display of Crown Jewels in bullet proof cabinets. I wasn't disappointed nevertheless after all my recent research I remain saddened that I probably ignored, and rushed past Destiny and its display of historic significance, something I shall always regret…

OPINION-EDITORIAL
DAVID SHRIBMAN
David M. Shribman is a North Shore native and Pulitzer Prize winner
AND NOW, WE WATCH One of them wants to be everyone’s friend; the other is emerging as no one’s. And yet: One yearns for a romantic past of domestic accord and accommodation; the other yearns for a past of superpower supremacy. One of them cannot bury his impulse to reach out and hug; the other cannot suppress his impulse to mobilize and mug. And yet: One of them is bewildered by the domestic rancor his initiatives have prompted; the other is bewildered that the world doesn’t embrace his historical theories. One of them is the product of an open political system rewarding the exhortations of the extrovert; the other is the product of a closed political system rewarding the intrigues of the introvert. And yet: One of them has endured through defeat and disappointment over decades; the other has endured into his third decade of power. One of them is the heir of a tradition rooted in the tactile political techniques of Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson; the other is the modern incarnation of the repressive political techniques of V.I. Lenin and Joseph Stalin. And yet: One of them is a prisoner of Cold War verities; the other wants to restore the precarious balance of the Cold War. Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin personify the complications and contradictions of the 21st century, burdened by the post-World War II past, where the passionate intensity of the one is defining the new world
of modern monsters for the other. Here are the questions of the hour: What does Putin want? Can the aggressiveness that prompted him to mount what he called Thursday a “special military operation” now be regarded as past — or prelude to something even greater? What will the next week of global tension bring after the past weeks of Winter Olympics competition? In all of this, Putin is the catalyst, Biden merely the reactor. No one, for good reason, quotes British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain during international crises, but his remarks of April 4, 1940, a month before Adolph Hitler sent troops barreling into Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France, are valuable for the ironic meaning they hold today. Speaking in Westminster, he said, “Whether it was that Hitler thought he might get away with what he had got without fighting for it, or whether it was that after all the preparations were not sufficiently complete — however, one thing is certain — he missed the bus.” In a way, Putin missed a bus as well. The bus that he missed was the chance to appear to the world as Biden’s equal and to restore Russia to its place as the antipode to America. “He wants the world’s attention,” Margaret MacMillan, the University of Toronto historian and author of the 2020 volume “War: How Conflict Shaped Us,” told me hours before it became clear that Putin favored aggression over negotiation and rendered the notion of a sum-
mit moot. “He has people coming to him, flying to see him. He’s already achieved a great deal. He’s regretted bitterly the disappearance of the Soviet Union.” Perhaps Putin recognized the twin perils of a meeting with Biden would have been the impulse toward reconciliation that these events — “a parley at the summit,” in the characterization of Winston Churchill, who invented the term in 1950 at another moment of tension between Russia and the West — tend to produce, plus the need to reconcile his actions (mobilization at the frontiers of Ukraine) with his words (assurances that he wasn’t planning military action). “You can’t lie overtly and do the opposite the next day without paying a real price,” said Jeremy Kinsman, a former Canadian ambassador to Russia. “A leader of a democracy couldn’t survive doing that, and an autocrat couldn’t survive doing that in the international community. This isn’t middle school.” From the viewpoint of both Putin and Biden, one truth prevails, and it has a middle-school simplicity: Biden never was going to send American military forces into battle in Ukraine, just as Dwight Eisenhower never was going to send American fighters into Hungary during the Soviet invasion of that Eastern European nation and amid conservative rhetoric of freeing the “captive nations” beyond the Iron Curtain of the newly formed Warsaw Pact. So Biden, in his terrible face-off with Putin, was left with the tools

of moral suasion (passionate but essentially powerless) and sanctions (strong in global marketplaces, but in diplomacy more a sign of weakness than strength). Hungary shares 85 miles of borderlands — and multiple geopolitical factors — with Ukraine. In the 1956 episode, Nikita Khrushchev held the whip hand and Eisenhower held few cards. “It was established,” William Colby, then a junior CIA officer and a future director of the agency, wrote years afterward, “that the United States, while firmly committed to the containment of the Soviets, was not going to liberate any of the areas within that sphere.” So it can be said again, three-quarters of a century later.
