If so, never fear, help is here. You, too, can aspire to the “Yard of the Month.” All you have to do is pick up the phone or boot up your computer.

Kathy Kimbrough, with Garden Scentsations, is a garden and design coach. She’s made it her mission to help homeowners become better gardeners by giving hands-on instruction and helping them design beautiful landscapes suited to western Colorado’s unique climate.

Kimbrough, 53, spent her “first life” at a desk working in real estate and banking but “was always dreaming of discovering my inner gardner,” she said.

After arriving in the Grand Valley in 1998, she decided to give her longdenied gardening instincts free rein and signed up for the Colorado State University Master Gardener program.

While taking the class, she found many friends with the same interests and still counts most of them as friends to this day.

Over the next few years, she joined the National Association of Professional Women in Landscape, founded and acted as president (past) of the Lavender Association of Western Colorado, and began coaching 15 to 20 garden clients per year. Now, 14 years later, she’s happier than ever.

“I always liked teaching and I realized that a lot of people these days don’t have mothers or grandmothers to teach them gardening skills,” Kimbrough said.

that allows her to take a digital photo of the client’s yard and digitally insert plants into the photo so they can see what the finished product will look like without ever turning a spade of dirt.

Kimbrough’s services can include physically planting greenscapes, but more often she walks the property with the clients to discuss their needs and uses for landscape, designs a plan that works for them, helps shop for the appropriate size and type of plants, and shows the clients where to place the plants in the landscape.

“A ton of people really want to garden, but they’re too afraid to start,” Kimbrough said. “I just empower them. They want to do it themselves and I help them do it right. I work on anything from re-doing a planter to a complete renovation.”

For those tasks that are beyond the client’s skill, Kimbrough has contacts throughout the landscape industry who install irrigation systems, hardscapes, etc.

She’s often asked questions about what type of plants grow well in western Colorado by clients concerned that without water, all they will have is a bunch of rock mulch

and a few scraggly plants. Kimbrough is reluctant to use the term xeriscape, because people think that means zero-scape.

“I teach water-wise gardening,” Kimbrough said. “People are amazed to see they can have a beautiful, green and flowing yard and still keep water use down. I specialize in cottage garden style, which incorporates three seasons of color, and only requires management of sun, soil and water.”

If you prefer a more hands-off landscape design, you might want to call Rick Spalenka, a licensed landscape architect and owner of RgsDesigns, LLC. Spalenka, 62, has 35 years experience in landscaping, having owned and operated a design/build/maintainence landscape company, garden center, nursery and greenhouse business in Virginia Beach, Virginia called Rainbow Gardens for 15 years before moving to western Colorado (Cedaredge) in 1995.

"I moved here to reduce stress," Spalenka said.

While he became acclimated to our area, Spalenka became a registered nurse.

“It’s funny," Spalenka said. "It only took four hours for a one-part exam

that has a 70 percent first-pass rate to be a nurse. “But it takes two and a half days and a five-part exam that has a 50-60 percent first-pass rate to become a landscape architect.”

Although licensed in Virginia, Spalenka took Colorado’s landscape architect test in 2008 (when the state first started requiring it), earning his Colorado Professional Landscape Architect designation. Currently only Vermont and the District of Columbia do not require that landscape architects be licensed. He’s also a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

RgsDesigns specializes in therapeutic gardens.

“Healing gardens are therapeutic stress relief, promoting a feeling of safety and an escape from stress,” Spalenka said.

Spalenka went to high school in Japan and his style has been influ-

enced by both Japanese and Chinese gardens.

“I call my style ‘Western Chipanese’ since I borrowed from both cultures,” he said.

This style works well for therapeutic gardens used in health care, hospice, retirement and assisted living venues, as well as residential and commercial landscape. Spalenka is certified in therapeutic gardens by the Chicago Botanic Garden, which required a 10-day course. He designed the Edgar Cayce Meditation Garden at the Association for Research and Enlightenment Center in Virginia Beach, and is past chairman of the Therapeutic Garden Association.

RgsDesigns produces complete landscape plans and, if desired, can work as the overall manager for the project, overseeing the many subcontractors. A moderate-sized project av-

erages about $30,000.

“Think of the cost of a new car,” Spalenka said. “They’ll run you 30 to 40 grand, and in five years are worth practically nothing. A well-designed landscape in the same price range lasts decades and continues to appreciate.

What you spend on a good designer, you’ll more than save on mistakes and have a landscape you can live with for a long time.”

Spalenka operates in the area between Ridgway and Grand Junction, producing designs that are always water wise, and which may include water features, structures, and night lighting as well as greenscape. He always likes to include hardscapes (boulders, exposed aggregate concrete, pavers, etc.) but not “gravelscapes.”

His favorite project to date was a beautiful farmhouse in Eckert.

The client was an avid quilter, so he incorporated a curved ramp so she could take her sewing machine outside.

The most difficult project required working extensively with the government, due to a wetlands preservation act, including public hearings, matching every square inch of impervious material (concrete, etc.) and many other restrictions.

“All these rules went into effect just as the project was getting started,” Spalenka said. “It ended up costing the client more for licenses and fees than for the whole design.”

Do-it-yourself landscape

ust about everyone knows that DIY stands for “do it yourself.” But when it comes to landscape, it can also mean “destroy it yourself.” Don’t let that scare you off. All it takes is planning to get it right.

Whether you want a complete renovation, new construction, or wish to add to what you have, you need a plan. Use an existing plot plan or survey showing the property boundaries and structures, or make one yourself. Measurements don’t have to be perfect, but try to be fairly accurate. Include compass directions and prevailing winds so you can see how the sun and wind affect your plan.

Take a Sunday drive or two once plants begin to green up and photograph landscapes that interest you. If you see a plant you like, take close-up photos. Google the plant’s description or take the photo to a garden center. Chances are, they can identify it. While you’re there, wander around and take note of the plants that look interesting. But be careful not to get shot by the homeowner.

The Grand Valley has a variety of soils and drainage problems. Sandy soils dry out fast and clay soils can be so hard that roots aren’t able to expand. To determine what you have, dig several test holes. Unless you have good, loamy soil, use organic soil amendments to improve

your chance of success. To amend, dig plant holes twice as large as needed and mix equal parts of quality mulch with your original dirt.

Using local cow or horse manure is common, but can increase the soil’s salt content. If you’re not sure what soil type you have, contact the CSU Extension office at 244-1834. If a spot always seems damp, choose a plant that “likes its feet wet.” Put in drainage such as underground, perforated pipe, install a hardscape (boulders, etc.) or build a berm (raised area of dirt) to get the roots up higher.

Invest in a few gardening books, or at least some time at the bookstore or library and research plants you think you’d like to have in your yard. Pay special attention to the size.

How many times have you seen a house with huge evergreens planted so close to it that they have grown over the windows and have to be trimmed just to get in the doorway?

Look at the bloom season for plants and pick a variety for each season.

Get creative with color, height and texture, too. Don’t forget the plant’s foliage—a variegated or uniquely colored leaf can be just as interesting as a blooming plant. If you have a lot of trees, pick plants that grow in shaded areas, otherwise you’ll have bare spots.

Decide how much effort you want to put into maintaining your

landscape. Do you want a garden to grow produce or plants just to look at and enjoy? Does the idea of pulling weeds make you pull out your hair? Raised beds are great for small kitchen gardens or flowerbeds. You can buy kits or build them from scratch, and they work best with drip irrigation systems. Whether you’re using raised beds or planting beds, use a high-quality ground fabric on top of the soil. Lay fabric over the area to be planted and cut an “X” just big enough to insert a seedling.

Any larger and weeds might try to come up beside the plant. Clean any soil off the fabric, then spread three inches of ground cover (bark, cobble or other stone, decomposed granite, shredded rubber, etc.). The fabric and mulch will discourage weeds for several years. Later, you might need a pre-emergent to prevent weeds from germinating without hurting your existing plants. Eventually blown-in dirt and decomposition will require adding more mulch to keep weeds from establishing.

As far as plants go, your options are nearly unlimited. Annuals give you color all season, but their water requirements are usually greater than perennials or shrubs and they have to be planted each year. They’re cheap, though, especially if purchased in small sizes. Annuals work really well in pot gardens around your entry or

patio, or in front of flowerbeds. For areas your irrigation system can’t reach, install a timed drip system off house water. You can set it to water frequently enough to keep potted plants from drying out.

Shrubs can be deciduous (drop their leaves) or evergreen, and come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and can bloom or just have nice foliage.

They’re usually easy to care for and even the uninitiated can prune most shrubs to shape and size without doing permanent damage. Roses grow well here, but there are some specific pests you need to know about. They also don’t like being sprayed with water, so it’s best to use drip irrigation. Roses need careful pruning and winterizing to keep them from freezing back.

Bulbs jump start spring with their bright blooms poking out of the snow in late winter. Some types must be lifted each fall and stored over the winter. If you don’t want to make that effort, expect the bulbs to die each year. Others, like iris, will need to be broken up every few years or they quit blooming. You need to plan ahead for most bulbs, planting in the fall for spring blooms.

Grasses add summer and fall interest. Their winter seed heads provide texture, as well as providing food for birds and other wildlife. You’ll find a wide variety: light and airy to

April 2013 thick and dense, from red to yellow to variegated, wide leaves and slender, as tall as a house or short and spiky. With grasses, and especially bamboos, be sure to look for “clump” styles or risk having the grasses spread in all directions.

Trees, dwarf or standard, evergreen or deciduous, can provide shade, fruit, and interesting textures or colors. Pay close attention to the size. Avoid planting close to structures or shading areas you want plants to grow in. Give yourself extra room with trees. Often, they can’t be moved. Don’t plant under utility lines, as it can cause problems with your house, and the power company can prune your tree into a disaster and you have no recourse. Make sure you’re not blocking a good view from an upstairs window. Unless you’re harvesting the fruit, plant fruitless varieties—overripe fruit on the ground is a magnet for ants and other critters, and a mess to walk or mow through.

Do you want a lot of grass for your grandchildren to play on or does the thought of mowing give you a headache? Do you need a play area, perhaps with a structure or sandbox? Consider if you want to be able to see this area from the house or a patio. If so, don’t put in tall plants or trees that block the view. Do you need privacy due to a taller house, an unattractive fence or road? Decide if you want climbing plants, a hedge of

www.BeaconSeniorNews.com similar plants, or layered plants, starting with short in the foreground and growing taller until you reach the desired height at the back. A wooden pergola or trellis can add height and interest or give climbing vines structure, but again, do you have the time, expertise and tools to do this yourself? There are some great readymade or “some assembly required” pieces, which are sturdy and well priced.

Patios with fire rings, barbecues and shade structures can bring the indoors out, and there are more options in this area than ever before, including furniture that’s just as comfortable and colorful as your living room. If you don’t already have a concrete patio, you might want to consider concrete pavers. With a little instruction and a busy weekend or two you can lay a beautiful patio that allows water to permeate.

In the event of a problem under the patio, you can remove and replace it and no one will ever know. This is something you can’t do with poured concrete. Price your options and decide if you have the time and interest before taking on this type of job.

There are lots of instructional videos, as well as knowledgeable salesmen who can get you lined out with the minimum amount of tools needed.

Another area to think about before doing it yourself is the irrigation system. You’ll have to deal with plumbing, electrical and trenching

equipment. Local irrigation suppliers can design your system if you provide them with a plot plan and plant layout, but there may be a fee if you don’t purchase your supplies from them. The same goes for night lighting. There are some great products available to highlight your greenscape, light your paths or patio, and really add to the nighttime ambiance, but you’ll need to hire an electrician unless you are skilled in this area. Solar lights eliminate a lot of the problems, but you may not get the results you’d like with the lowerpriced items. ■

Return to heat, and cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until mixture pulls away from sides of pan, about 4 minutes. Transfer to the bowl of a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed to cool slightly, about 1 minute.

With machine running, add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing well after each addition. Transfer dough to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch round tip.

Pipe twenty 2-1/2-inch-long eclairs onto each sheet. Bake until eclairs rise and are golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to wire rack to cool.

Split eclairs in half lengthwise using a serrated knife. Pipe vanilla cream onto eclair bottoms. Spoon macerated berries on top of cream, and sandwich with eclair tops.

Ask the Old Bag Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

By Gayle LagmanCreswick Dear Readers: I have had many requests for a copy or reprint of the “Old Bag Rules for Casual Dating for the Over 50 Crowd,” so here they are.

Remember, the rules are for casual dating as opposed to dating your one and only. Since women are now some of the highest retirement earners, more of them are offering to pay.

Old Bag Rules for Casual Dating for the Over 50 Crowd It should be understood and accepted that each of you will pay your own way for casual dating (movies, plays, dances, dinners, etc.). This will take care of those women who are afraid that if the man pays, he may think they owe him favors (from previous letters). It will also take care of those men who simply cannot handle the drain on their finances.

If either of you cannot afford to pay for yourself, be honest and say so.

If the relationship changes from casual to serious, then you can have a discussion about who will pay.

Sometimes the woman may be more well-heeled than the man and it is okay for her to take over the paying.

Or if the man is more well-heeled, he may opt to take over as the payee.

Whatever you decide, it should be by mutual consent.

If you are invited for a weekend trip, make sure you know what it entails. You may think it means separate rooms and he may assume that you are agreeing to more. The invitee should clarify who is paying.

It is quite okay for a woman to ask a man out on a date and the above rules should be followed. Let him know you go by the “Old Bag Rules.”

To the women, I say, life from 50 on is not the same as when you were in your 20s. You should not expect to always be treated by the man paying.

This is 2013 and you have earned

your independence.

To the men I say, it is quite okay to be dating someone who pays for themselves.

This is not 1950. It is nothing to be ashamed of to have a woman pay for herself. It may seem awkward at first, but you will get used to it.

If dining, the easiest way to handle it is to ask for separate checks, rather than getting out your calculators and making a big deal out of it.

The rules have changed. You are now at the age of independence. Enjoy! If there are any servers out there, please do not assume the bill will be paid by the man.

The Healthy Geezer

his is the last installment of my series on back pain. The first two columns were about causes and prevention. This one is about treatments.

Treatment generally depends on whether back pain is acute or chronic. Acute back pain usually gets better on its own. However, treatment for chronic back pain can be surgical or nonsurgical. In most cases, back pain does not require surgery.

The following are common nonsurgical treatments for chronic back pain. You should seek your own doctor’s advice about any of them.

• Hot or cold packs can soothe.

• Exercise can help ease chronic pain and reduce its risk of returning.

• Medications are used to treat chronic back pain. These include over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen that relieve both pain and inflammation, prescription narcotics such as oxycodone, topical analgesics such as Ben Gay, muscle relaxants and certain antidepressants.

• Traction, which employs pulleys and weights to stretch the back, pulls the vertebrae apart to allow a bulging disc to slip back into place.

• Injections into nerves, spinal joints or specific areas of pain.

• Spinal manipulation refers to procedures in which professionals use their hands to treat the spine or surrounding tissues.

• Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) involves wearing a small box over the painful area that directs mild electrical impulses to nerves.

• Acupuncture, which involves the insertion of thin needles at precise locations, is used to relieve pain.

• In acupressure, a therapist applies pressure to points with hands, elbows or feet.

• Rolfing is a type of massage involving strong pressure on deep tis-

sues in the back to relieve tightness.

Some conditions that may require surgery include: • Herniated or ruptured discs that are damaged and irritate nearby nerves.

• Spinal stenosis, the narrowing of the spinal canal.

• Spondylolisthesis, a condition in which a vertebra dislocates.

• Vertebral fractures caused by trauma or crumbling of the vertebrae.

• Degenerative disc disease brought on by aging.

Following are some commonly performed back surgeries: • Laminectomy/discectomy in which part of the lamina, a portion of the bone on the back of the vertebrae, is removed. The herniated disc is then removed.

• Microdiscectomy removes a herniated disc through a small incision in the back. The doctor uses a magnifying microscope in this operation.

• Laser surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a needle in the disc that delivers a few bursts of laser energy to vaporize the tissue in the disc. This reduces its size and relieves pressure on the nerves.

• In a laminectomy, the doctor makes a large incision down the affected area of the spine and removes the lamina and any bone spurs, which are overgrowths of bone that may have formed in the spinal canal because of osteoarthritis.

• In spinal fusion, two or more vertebrae are joined together using bone grafts, screws and rods to stop slippage of an affected vertebra.

• Disc replacement, an alternative used when a disc is herniated to remove the disc and replace it with a synthetic disc. ■

The fiber path to a healthier, longer life

N

uts to you. And fiber-rich whole grain, too. That is, if you want to improve your prospects of living a long time.

A new National Institutes of Health study found that those who consumed higher amounts of fiber in their diets had a lower chance of dying than those who didn’t eat whole grains, nuts and vegetables with fiber.

The study was a big one. About 388,000 people took part. Involved were people from age 50 to 71 when the nine-year project began.

Researchers examined data from 219,123 men and 168,999 women.

The findings will appear in the June 14 print edition of the “Archives of Internal Medicine,” if you are someone who wants to “fly-speck” the data.

The researchers who made the study were led by the National Cancer Institute. Its positive conclusion was: A diet rich in dietary fiber from whole plant foods may provide significant health benefits.

Major reductions were found in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, respiratory and infectious diseases, both in men and women.

There also was less risk of dying from cancer, among men, but not among women. It was explained that this might be because men have higher death rates from cancers in the neck, head, esophagus, bladder and kidneys. These are types of cancer in which the risk is lowered by eating foods rich in fiber.

The seniors taking part in the study each made out detailed questionnaires about the food they ate in 1995 and 1996, giving details about the food they consumed each day.

Before the study started, seniors with heart disease, diabetes, or cancer were excluded. Also excluded were people who ate almost nothing that didn’t have fiber—in other words, people who are fiber-bar crazed at lunchtime every day, or

to put it more seriously, those who reported extreme intakes of fiber.

Current U.S. dietary guidelines recommend that people eat 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed in a day, which translates to about 28 grams of fiber a day, because the average adult diet is 2,000 calories.

So how do you know how many grams of fiber a particular food has in it? On foods such as cereal, the food labels required by the Food and Drug Administration and the Agriculture Department tell you. Pick foods that have at least three grams of fiber per serving, dieticians say. The trick is knowing how big the serving is. If the label tells how many grams “per cup,” that cup may be enough to fill your cereal bowl. But some labels go by a half-cup serving.

Fiber has no calories. It just shoots directly to your digestive tract. So if you eat a high-fiber meal, drink plenty of liquids or suffer the consequences.

Although many grains, fruits and vegetables have fiber, eating nuts helps your heart, too. Nuts, which have unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients, are a great snack food, as well—if you can stop at one handful. They are generally inexpensive and easy to store and don’t have to be cooked.

The type of nuts you eat isn’t that important. Almost every kind of nut has many nutrients in that small package. Nuts can help lower your LDL—the bad cholesterol level in your blood. Nuts also aid to reduce the risk of blood clots and they provide vitamin E, which helps stop the development of plaque in your arteries that can lead to heart attacks.

The big study of seniors found that the kind of fiber that had the most positive effect for both men and women came from whole grains and beans. Fiber from fruit was found to have no effect on longer life. So, an apple a day may not keep the doctor away after all. ■

Got rhytids? You could try to get rid of them, but are you sure you want to?

T

here’s trouble on the rhytids front. Rhytids is the scientific name for wrinkles, ladies.

The French cosmetics giant, L’Oreal SA, has been charged with overpromising. The company’s U.S. subsidiary, Lancome, has claimed its product “boosts the activity of genes and stimulates the production of youth.”

“Whoa,” said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The suggestion that any product is aimed at affecting the way the body works has to be classified as a new drug and therefore comes under FDA control.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Good skin-care regimen, along with regular use of an anti-wrinkle cream, may lessen the appearance of wrinkles and help fight off common signs of aging.” You’re never too old to start taking care of your skin.

As you age, your skin loses elasticity—the ability to stretch and retract. Poor elasticity makes skin settle, hang and fold.

Result: wrinkles. Some of the problem areas for women older than 60 include the eyes, lips and chin, as if you didn’t know.

What Lancome pitches sounds desirable. An eye product and a night cream that have been shown to “improve the condition around the stem cells and stimulate cell regeneration to reconstruct skin to a denser quality.”

That’s also going too far, according to the FDA. A facial cosmetic procedure is being widely advertised on network TV these days. It’s called Lifestyle Lift.

It’s a type of facial surgery. This year,

The procedure is advertised as a minimally invasive, short flap face-lift performed under local anesthesia.

The procedure involves removing the excess skin. Published reports show an increased incidence of complications associated with general and intravenous anesthesia. The Lifestyle Lift procedure can cost from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on how much repair work is done.

The wealth of wrinkle treatments now available can be bewildering.

They range from Botox to fat recycling. But which one is right for you?

Here’s one guide to supposedly the top 10 treatments available.

Botox, or Botulinium Toxin Type A, is an injectable toxin derived from bacteria. It temporarily eliminates frown lines and upper lip creases.

It is injected in minute quantities and softens facial lines by paralyzing brow muscles. Effects last for three to four months. Used in excess, Botox can temporarily cause drooping eyelids, frozen foreheads, crooked smiles, even drooling.

Collagen is a purified, “natural,” injectable protein filler derived from cows. It is called a first step in the

battle against aging. It levels wrinkles and scars instantaneously and lasts for up to four months. It works best on the lower face and lips. A small percentage of women suffer an allergic reaction involving red, itchy, disfiguring lumps. Experts advise getting two skin tests a month before the jabs.

Hyaluronic acid is injectable filler derived from the combs of roosters or bacteria grown in a lab. Brands include Restylane and Perlane. It purportedly reduces the effects of aging. Within a few days, crows’ feet, lip wrinkles and nose-to-mouth lines fill out. It lasts six to 12 months. There’s a risk of bruising and acne. The effects are said to last longer than those of collagen.

Fat recycling is when fat from your stomach or thighs is extracted and injected into your face. It can show a 60 percent improvement in wrinkles, sometimes lasting years. It’s effective for deeper creases.

SoftForm is a spongy piece of tubing that is implanted into deep wrinkles. It is a permanent solution to facial lines. But it takes up to three months for the full effect to be visible. You look like a hamster for a few days and have to have stitches in your face.

N-Lite is a nonsurgical laser treatment. It emits a cooling spray to protect the epidermis and heats the dermis. A laser heats blood vessels, stimulating collagen production and reducing wrinkles by around 50 percent.

Laser resurfacing is when a laser goes deep into the skin, heating

tissues. Only one step away from a surgical face-lift, the laser gives off an intense beam, removing damaged outer skin layers and stimulating production of collagen. Dramatic improvements are promised. It has to be done under sedation by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. You may need months to recover, so you may have to hide away.

ERP is a system of electric acupuncture used to treat necklines, facial wrinkles, broken veins and open pores. It purportedly can take 10 years off your skin with electrical waves delivered via ultra-fine needles. It’s called “a gym for the face.”

Permanent fillers are synthetic fillers made from hyaluronic acid or collagen mixed with resin-like microspheres. Injected deep into an area, they plump out lines. The collagen degrades and particles remain. It’s a controversial treatment. Swelling, nodules and facial disfigurement may develop. Most surgeons won’t use them, as very little long-term research has been done.

Micro crystals: The face is sprayed with crystals to remove the outer layer of skin and stimulate the circulation. It exfoliates skin to give a 50 percent reduction in lines. The gentle exfoliation is often combined with a cleansing facial. Sensitive skin could react. Improvements are short term, lasting only a couple of months.

Of course, you could always just learn to live with wrinkles and grow old gracefully. ■

ommunity Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between local farms and community members. Participating community members buy a “share” of the farm, supporting the farmer financially while sharing the rewards and risks of farming. In return, the “shareholders” or “members” receive a share of the harvest, usually on a weekly basis.

To some people, knowing how and where their food is grown is just as important as having a healthy intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. CSA members benefit by eating an abundance of fresh produce grown by farmers they know who use methods they support.

There are several CSA farms that make it easy for Western Slope residents to eat healthy every year while supporting small business, sustainable food production and the local economy.

Field to Fork CSA, located at 230 E. Third St. in Palisade, is getting ready for its second local growing season held in May through October.

Field to Fork provides fresh, local and organically-grown produce to members of the CSA every week through a market-style pick up in Palisade and Grand Junction.

“You get a list of how much of what produce you can take depending on your share size,” co-owner Jessica Washkowiak, 31, said. “This way, members get to look over and choose their own vegetables. It gives them a choice over what they’re eating.”

The produce available varies as the season changes. In May, members may get to choose their own brocco-

li, bell peppers, carrots, beets, herbs and turnips. July may bring tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, eggplant, hot peppers, winter squash and pumpkins. At the end of the season, members’ lists may include salad greens, kale, Swiss chard, arugula, leeks and radishes.

“CSA allows the community to support the farmer in early season,” Washkowiak said. “In turn, it gives the community a sense of food security and supports a small localscale food system. The farm becomes spiritually and financially a community farm.”

Washkowiak, originally from Grand Junction, and her husband Scott have years of experience operating CSA farms. Scott, 39, grew up on an Illinois farm and learned how to grow corn and beans conventionally, but was always interested in sustainable agriculture. After college, the Washkowiaks were introduced to CSA while working on a farm in California.

They returned to Palisade, where they managed The Cameron Place, another CSA farm. When the owner

Dear Mark: I enjoyed your recent answer regarding gambling wins and taxes. I have another question regarding my tax liability on a win. I am a slot player who occasionally hits jackpots above $1,200. I have always declared my wins, but never deducted my losses, mostly because I fail to document them.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Phil D. Reportable gambling winnings, Phil, can come from the casino games, as well as lotteries, online poker, raffles, bingo, horse racing, tiddlywink tournaments—you name it. If it’s any form of gambling wins, you’re on the hook to Uncle Sam for your windfall. Fortunately, the Internal Revenue Service also allows you an offset to those taxes by reporting your losses, just so long as you keep impeccable records. Gambling winnings are reported on tax form 1040 on the Other Income line.

As a loss-claimant, you will need to substantiate your loss claims with a flawlessly documented, descriptive gambling diary. Your gambling diary should have the date and type of gambling event, name and location of the casino, poker room, racetrack, etc., table or slot machine number where the gambling took place and total dollar amount lost. You are also permitted to use canceled checks, airline tickets, credit-card cash advances, bank withdrawal statements made at the casino, legitimate losing betting stubs, and yearly statements of your wins and losses from the casino as additional confirmation.

For those who use a player’s card, which I highly recommend, your total action is recorded, with the casino maintaining a paper trail copy of your win/loss total that you can request as proof of your play. To get access to your win/loss record from your player’s card, just call the casino and request it. The casino will send you a statement, sometimes upon

written request, recapping your play for that year. Typically, your statement should show three totals on it: coin-in, coin-out, and net win/loss.

By the way, you can only offset your jackpot wins against losses as long as you itemize your deductions, rather than taking the standard deduction on your tax return. Gambling losses can just be used to counterbalance gambling winnings during that same tax period, plus, you may not carry losses forward, or back, to any other tax year.

For documenting your gambling losses, I recommend you buy the Lady Luck Gambling Diary. This diary complies with revenue procedure 77-29 and can be had for as little as $3 at the Gamblers' Book Club (www.gamblersbookclub.com), or call 800-522-1777.

Remember, Phil, the burden of proof falls on your shoulders, so the better your records, the better your chances of surviving an audit.

Dear Mark: You always state, “Set loss limits and win goals.” Is it an unrealistic goal when playing blackjack to buy-in for $100 and try to win $500 to $1,000?

What do I need to do to keep my garden looking good? Barbara L., Fruita Gardening experts and water managers have been telling us for years that we should adopt water-wise gardening practices because one day our plentiful water supply on the Western Slope won’t be so plentiful. Well, that day is here. There are several things you can do to keep your landscape healthy and looking good while still being mindful of the amount of water you use. Start with efficient irrigation. The average homeowner uses twice as much water as their landscapes actually need.

Contact an irrigation professional if you have questions or concerns about your irrigation system. Water use can be reduced by at least 30 percent with a few other simple steps.

Make certain water only falls on landscaped areas, water in the cool of the morning or evening to reduce evaporation, and avoid watering during rainstorms or in the wind. During those rare rain events, capture that water by directing your gutters and downspouts onto your lawn or planting beds. Other ideas to con-

If you still want to buy that French lavender plant, you can always keep it as a houseplant as it is only hardy to 10 degrees. ome of the items listed on a 1948 D&RG Western RR inventory sheet, separated into narrow (2,600+) and standard (12,000+) gauge items, are the following: eight business cars, 50 extra gang sleepers, 20 living cars, eight kitchen cars, 12 extra gang diners, six kitchen-diners, 17 commissary cars, 36 water cars (tank), 19 derrick outfit cars, five B&B sleepers, 152 riprap flat cars, 30 coach outfits, eight tool cars, 50 box outfits, and much more.

Locally, a major change came in 1953, with the North Fork encompassing the track from Grand Junction through Delta to the coal mines of Somerset and Paonia. Today, the Grand Junction-Delta segment continues to be a vital part of the Union Pacific Railroad’s North Fork Branch coal operations, handling three or four loaded coal trains and an equal number of empties every day.

The Galloping Goose is the popular name given to a series of seven profitable railcars, built in the 1930s in Ridgway by the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and operated until the early 1950s. The “geese” were equipped with air horns rather than the whistles of the steam locomotives. The financially strapped RGS developed the “motors” for lighter loads to stave off bankruptcy and to keep its contract to run mail to mountain towns.

A similar unit was built for the San Cristobal RR. When it folded in 1939, it was dismantled, with some parts going to rebuild and maintain the no.

After World War II, railroads rejuvenated overworked and neglected fleets with fast and often luxurious streamliners, such as the California Zephyr, which inspired the last major resurgence in passenger rail travel.

The California Zephyr, world famous

for its leisurely, scenic ride, was jointly operated with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad from Chicago to Denver and the Western Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City to Oakland, California. Even with lessthan-profitable revenues, the D&RG continued to operate its share of the Zephyr equipment as the Rio Grande Zephyr between Denver and Salt Lake City until 1983. The Rio Grande Zephyr was the last privately operated long-distance passenger service in the U.S. Amtrak, which began its operations in 1971, subsequently rerouted its modern version of the California Zephyr to follow D&RG’s scenic route between Denver and Salt Lake City. Amtrak, based in Washington, D.C., connects 46 states.

In 1988, Rio Grande Industries purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad, and decided to use the Southern Pacific name for the combined railroad.

Reflecting on his train ride through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in 1889, Rudyard Kipling wrote, “We entered a gorge, remote from the sun, where the rocks were two thousand feet sheer, and where a rock splintered river roared and howled ten feet below a track which seemed to have been built on the simple principle of dropping miscellaneous dirt into the river and pinning a few rails a-top. There was a glory and a wonder and a mystery about the mad ride, which I felt keenly...until I had to offer prayers for the safety of the train.”

The route was originally built between 1881 and 1882, by the D&RG to carry people and supplies to and from silver and gold ore mines in the San Juans. The line was an extension of the D&RG narrow gauge from Antonito to Durango. The line from Durango to Silverton has seen continuous use of steam locomotives since 1881. The new town of Durango was founded by the D&RG in 1880, with the depot built in January 1882. It has been preserved in original form.

he Grand Valley has a secret weapon against bland, unappealing landscape and now, I’m going to share that secret with you.

Desert Vista Garden Club members have had their green thumbs in many beautiful landscapes in the valley, including the rose garden at Lincoln Park and the Garden at the VA Medical Center. Not to mention, they probably hold the greatest number of Yard of the Month signs ever.

For $25 a year, members gather monthly to hear speakers expound on garden-related topics such as composting, beekeeping, cacti and succulents, house plants and the benefits of indoor gardening, wildflowers, mushroom gathering and identification, and essential oils and aromatherapy.

Past speakers have included garden experts (and club members) such as recently retired Colorado State University Area Horticulture Agent Dr. Curtis Swift and staff from Bookcliff Gardens. The club also occasionally goes on field trips to destinations such as the Vail Gardens and the Tulip Garden in Salt Lake City.

Membership stays around 40, and potential new members must be referred by an existing member. They average three to four openings per year, and currently have room for two new members.

The club, formed in 1950, meets the first Wednesday of each month, in the afternoons from October to April, and in the mornings the rest of the year. They have a special event twice per year, with a garden tour in June and a holiday luncheon in December.

Meetings are generally held in the home of a volunteer member, and

coffee and snacks are provided. At the holiday event last year, rather than the usual gift exchange, they held a silent auction to raise money for charitable giving.

Desert Vista provides funding to many different civic projects, as well as physically working in some of the gardens. The club has a variety of committees and a newsletter which is distributed monthly. Members are all expected to help with projects.

Current President Betty Hall said she enjoys the club for many reasons, including the friendships she’s made, the interesting programs, social interaction, and working on all the projects.

“I’ve been a member for six years, but several of the members have been in the club since the 1990s,” Hall said.

Collecting coins, finding treasures

ove affairs can happen in middle age.

That’s what happened with Dean Crysler, 71, president of the Western Slope Coin Club.

“My dad started giving me what he said were collectible coins when I was little,” Crysler said. “I threw them in a box and didn’t pay much attention to them, but I kept them, because Dad said they were special.

Then my mom died and Dad married a woman who had a coin collection from her late husband. Dad told me she was going to sell them and I decided to buy them. I just put that collection away with my other coins. I didn’t really understand or appreciate what I had.”

At age 65, retired, and a bit bored one day, Crysler pulled out his boxes of coins and really looked at them. Zing! went his heart strings.

“My collection was absolutely fascinating,” he said.

He has been an avid coin collector, investor and dealer ever since.

Many people have coins and paper currency handed down through their family and most don’t know what to do with it. When traveling buyers come to town, many are tempted to take their treasures in to be evaluated or sold.

“Don’t do that,” Crysler said. “You most likely won’t get but a fraction of its worth. Bring your coins and bills to a Western Slope Coin Club meeting and our members will evaluate it for you for free.”

The Western Slope Coin Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the Redlands Community Center, 2463 Broadway. From 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., the public is invited to come for a free evaluation. The service is firstcome, first-served and stops precisely at 6:30 p.m. for the meeting.

“We don’t try to buy anything at the evaluation. It’s just pure fun for the club members.”

“We’ll have 52 tables full of coins and currency,” Crysler said. “There will be something for everybody.

Coin collectors tend to specialize.

No one can do or know it all. Some like silver, others handle gold, and others may just have paper currency. We have one dealer who strictly deals with world coins and nothing from the U.S.” Even if you don’t collect or invest in coins or currency, you’ll see lots of incredible things you have never seen before and probably wouldn’t get a chance to see otherwise.

“There will be some expensive collectibles and investment items there, but we’ll have things at all prices,” Sharon said. “It’s a great place to find treasures, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to get yourself or children started with collecting. You can buy an Indian penny for a dollar or other coins for very little money. It’s fun for all. A lot of it is just really beautiful and artistic.”

The show is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, April 26, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Lincoln Park Barn. Admission is only $2. ■

Plantscaping for health and beauty

“It’s nice to come into a room with plants instead of bare walls,” she said.

Zeller works directly with the client or an interior designer to achieve the look the client wants for their space. She looks at areas of light and specifically uses plants that grow best indoors and in western Colorado’s climate. She also looks for appropriate containers to house the plants.

“Containers should not be what draw your attention,” Zeller said.

“You want the plants to do that.”

Zeller provides guaranteed plant maintenance services that include watering, fertilizing, cleaning, pruning, shaping, detecting and treating diseased plants, and more.

Zeller only orders plants that are “the best of the best.” She personally selects each plant and buys locally when she can—often small plants— because some large plants can’t be found locally.

Many of her clients are businesses, but her residential clients are mostly over age 40 and are looking for someone with expertise or they don’t have the time to maintain their plants themselves.

Zeller, owner of Touch of Green, Inc., said interior landscaping is the process of designing and decorating an indoor space, using live foliage and silk plants.

“It’s like artwork, but with plants,” she said.

Zeller works with both commercial and residential clients. Her work has been displayed at Mesa Mall, Two Rivers Convention Center, Wells Fargo, Alpine Bank and local restaurants such as Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Chili’s. She has also done design for weddings, the Parade of Homes and the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet.

Zeller went to school for interior design. While in college, she worked for an interior landscape company and fell in love with the profession.

She has since been in the industry for 25 years.

“It used to be called ‘plantscaping,’ but now more people are familiar with the term ‘landscaping,’” she said.

Zeller said interior landscaping was a booming profession in the 1970s and '80s, but due to budget cuts and the evolution of trends it is no longer as popular.

“In the '70s and '80s, many buildings had atriums and they thought the more plants, the better,” she said. “But in the 1990s, it went to the other extreme. Now, in the 2000s, people are starting to bring plants back.”

What is the Cloud and how can it help me?

More and more, we are hearing about the Cloud.

Likewise, more and more people are asking the simple question: What is the Cloud?

This month, I would like to attempt to simplify the Cloud to a basic analogy, so as to bring some meaning to the term and to break down any fear barrier that some are experiencing.

The impersonal sound and feel of the Cloud has both home users and people in business questioning the wisdom of placing any files or information out for all to see. But in most cases, the real truth is that the Cloud is not at all a public facing storage, but is rather private and secure. Why is this important?

Because like it or not, our whole future is headed in this direction so we might as well understand it so we can act in a responsible manner.

Q. What does the Cloud do for me that I can’t do for myself?

The Cloud can build a computer system that has fail safes for a fraction of what it would cost the average consumer.

What is a fail safe? It’s a computer that is backed up and duplicated in a variety of sophisticated ways that ensures that the contents of the computer are not lost due to computer failures.

Q. So why does this concern me, since I have chosen to opt out of the whole concept?

Most likely you have been using the Cloud for quite some time in a limited form and didn’t even know it. Think of this. How many of you used to have an answering machine in your home and now your very personal voicemails that are left when someone calls your home are really stored in some phone com-

pany’s server room in the form of voicemail? That is a form of the Cloud.

Q. I have heard that it’s really not secure.

How do they secure my information?

Encryption. Imagine all of the words and letters of this article put in a blender and mixed all up. That is an over-simplified explanation of encryption. The process goes something like this: You save information on your computer. It is scrambled and then sent to be stored (in scrambled format) on the remote server site.

At such time that you need that information, it is then pulled back from the server in that scrambled form and then unscrambled only once it is safe and sound on your computer again.

Q. Is the Cloud safe for legal or very personal documents?

Yes. One encryption method used today is set up so that even the geniuses that build the Cloud storage servers could not break the code to unscramble your information to be able to read it or in any way benefit from your information.

This method uses a very long password that needs to be stored away in a safe of some sort to protect it from being destroyed. Without this code, even you could not retrieve your information.

t’s no secret that health care costs have been spiraling out of control for years. To fight back, your best bet is to be a wellinformed consumer. Know the true costs of medical procedures, supplies and medications so you can bargain effectively. Carefully anticipate and track medical expenses and stay on top of your bills.

But sometimes, even when you follow the rules you still can get burned. I’ve heard many appalling stories about people, even those with comprehensive insurance, who have been denied benefits, over charged, sent to collections or even forced to file for bankruptcy because they couldn’t pay their medical bills.

Here are some coping strategies: Carefully review each doctor, lab or hospital bill and match it against the Explanation of Benefits statement that shows how much they were reimbursed by the insurance company.

Also, watch for items that may have been charged to you by mistake such as: • Medications, supplies, treatments or meals you didn’t receive while hospitalized or getting an outpatient procedure.

• Duplicate charges for a single procedure (such as X-rays, MRIs and lab work), including those that had to be redone due to a technician’s error.

• Charges for a full day’s hospitalization when you checked out early, or private room rates when you shared a suite.

The summary hospital bill you were sent probably doesn’t contain many details, so ask for an itemized bill along with a copy of your medical chart and a pharmacy ledger showing which drugs you were given during your stay.

If you’re having difficulty paying a medical bill, don’t simply ignore it.

Like any creditor, doctors and hos-

pitals often turn unpaid bills over to collection agencies, which will wreak havoc with your credit score.

Contact creditors as soon as possible, explain your situation and ask them to set up an installment payment plan or work out a reduced rate.

Many people with no insurance discover that they’re often charged much higher rates than those negotiated by insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid. Don’t be afraid to ask for those lower rates and to work out a repayment plan—just be sure to get the agreement in writing. Most doctors and hospitals would rather accept reduced payments than have to deal with collection agencies and possibly no reimbursement at all.

Ask the hospital’s patient liaison to review your case and see whether you qualify for financial assistance from the government, a charitable organization or the hospital itself.

Most will forgive some or all bills for people whose incomes fall below certain amounts tied to federal poverty levels. Also pursue this avenue with your doctor or other provider— ideally before they’ve begun collections.

A few additional cost-savings tips: Ask whether your employer offers flexible spending accounts, which let you pay for eligible out-of-pocket health care and/or dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis.

Use online price-comparison services like Healthcare Blue Book and OutofPocket.com to research going rates for a variety of medical services.

Unless it’s a true emergency, try to avoid emergency rooms and use an urgent care network facility affiliated with your insurance company or ask your doctor for recommendations.

Bottom line: Know what health services cost and don’t be afraid to negotiate. You’ll haggle over the price of a car. Why not your health?

The rally is a fundraiser for Rose Hill Hospitality House, which provides free lodging for St. Mary’s Hospital patients and family. The house, located at 605 26 1/2 Road, has 20 private rooms, with queen beds, phones, baths and TVs. There is a common dining area and limited shared kitchen. Rooms are allocated according to need as determined by St. Mary’s staff. The rooms are full nearly 100 percent of the time, due

You’ll start at Canyon View Park between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 5 after a light breakfast and head down valley. The rally has a 50K (31 miles) ride that runs to Fruita and back or a 100K (62 miles) ride to Highline State Park and back. The entire rally is nearly flat, making it easy enough for all ages and physical conditions to participate.

This isn’t a race—it’s a leisurely ride to enjoy the outdoors. There are no prizes for arriving first, but there are some giveaways. A hot lunch is provided and even if you’re running behind schedule, you’ll still find a boxed lunch waiting. No one is ever left out on the course alone. There will always be someone to make sure all riders make it back.

Rest stations are available along the way, along with support vehicles.

If you have mechanical problems, need a drink or rest, or want a ride to town, you won’t have to wait long for assistance. You also don’t need a fancy bike. The rally draws both experienced and novice riders.

Jane Foster started the rally 17 years ago.

“Jane created a wonderful event and gave those of us who followed all the tools we needed to continue after she moved on,” long-time volunteer Ed Lipton said. “Nothing has changed from her original format, not even the forms.”

The rally has a long history and it’s not been without a few trials and tribulations.

“One Saturday (the day before the event) we were getting set up and someone casually mentioned that there weren’t any Porta Potties at Fruita,” Lipton recalled. “The company providing them was closed for the weekend. Luckily, someone knew the owners, called and got them delivered in time. Now, one of our volunteers physically follows them as

The location of all important documents: Your will, any Power of Attorney documents, birth certificate, marriage certificate, military discharge papers, income tax returns, insurance policies, deeds, social security card, checking account books, savings account books, certificates of deposit, credit cards and statements, and your prearranged funeral plan or your burial/cremation instructions. Heirlooms bequests, medical history, obituary/Legacy information.

2. Passwords for your computer, all email accounts, all online banking, credit card and store accounts, and all websites you have subscribed to so that these can be terminated upon your passing. Keep this list updated regularly.

3. Names, addresses and phone numbers of all key contacts, such as lawyer, financial advisor, bank, insurance agent, funeral home, current and former employers (especially if you are still entitled to benefits through your previous employers), etc.

4. Location of any safety or security bank boxes and a list of their contents. Include any necessary accessing information such as a phrase or password that might be needed.

5. A list of your debts and approximate balance. Also update this list as often as possible.

The following activities are offered at Bill Heddles Recreation Center, 530 Gunnison River Drive in Delta. To register for any of the following activities or for a full list, call 874-0923.

• Swimming lessons - Private lessons are now offered all throughout the year. Sign up anytime for either private or semi-private swim lessons.

Appointments are available from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 2 p.m.-6 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Fridays. Cost is $75 for five 30-minute private, one-on-one lessons, and $50 for five 30-minute semi-private, two-three participant lessons.

• Handgun safety course A handgun safety course will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 13 and April 27. Class provides participants with safety requirements necessary to acquire a permit. Cost is $70. Must preregister by 5 p.m. three days prior to the class.

• Fantastic Flowers seminar A three-hour springtime gardening seminar will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 13. It will be taught by City of Delta Parks Department Gardeners and will include soil preparation, plant selection, planting techniques, irrigation, fertilization, and propagation. Cost is $10. Must preregister by 5 p.m. April 10.

• Spring Into Shape 5K Fun Run & Walk - City of Delta’s annual Spring Into Shape 5K Fun Run & Walk will start at 9:30 a.m. on April 13. Check-in time is 8 a.m. Sign up by 5 p.m. April 1. Cost is $20 with a T-shirt, $10 without a T-shirt. After April 1 it is $25 with a T-shirt, $15 without a T-shirt.

• Archery class - A beginning archery class will be from 5 p.m.8 p.m. on April 21 and April 28. Class is taught by certified NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) instructors. Cost is $40 for a twoday class. Register by 5 p.m. the Friday before class begins.

Western Slope Rural Philanthropy Days This year, Western Slope nonprofits will have a unique opportunity to connect with over 30 Colorado foundations at the 2013 Western Slope Rural Philanthropy Days conference June 17-19 in Ouray. The conference provides a powerful opportunity for the state’s most influential funders to come to Ouray for three days of workshops and collaborative events focused on the needs of Western Slope communities. Montrose Senior Activities The Montrose Recreation District has the following activities scheduled for seniors 50+ in April. Register one

• Palisade Hike – We will hike in Palisade to view the peach blossoms from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on April 11. This is rated as a moderate, three-mile hike.

• Ouray Treasures Trip - We begin our day with a guided tour of the Alchemist Historical Collection, an extensive historic pharmacy and medical collection dating back to 350 BC with a special focus on Colorado and wild west pharmacy-related items. We will also take a guided tour of the historic Wright Opera House and learn about its past and plans

Delta/ Montrose counties 41 for the future. Our final tour is of the Otto Mears Exhibit at the Ouray County Historical Museum. Mears is most famous for building toll roads and railroads. The trip takes place from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on April 18 and April 19. Cost is $25. Bring money for lunch.

• Touring Delta - We begin our day with a tour of the Fort Uncompahgre Museum. Next, we tour the Bill Heddles Recreation Center. We will have lunch and complete our day shopping in a few downtown stores.

The older I get, the happier I am not to be young

recently went to a fast food restaurant for lunch. On the menu I saw that you could have an order of six, nine or 12 chicken nuggets. So I asked for a half-dozen nuggets.

“We don’t have a half-dozen nuggets,” the teenager at the counter said.

“You don’t?” I asked.

“We only have six, nine or 12,” she replied.

“So, what you’re saying is that I can’t order a half-dozen nuggets, but I can order six?”

“That’s right,” she said.

Shaking my head in disbelief, I ordered six nuggets.

Last week, I was checking out at our local mega mart. I had just a few items and the lady behind me put her items on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those divider sticks that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our things so that the cashier wouldn’t get the purchases mixed up.

After the young cashier had scanned all of my items, she picked up the divider stick, looking it over for the bar code so she could scan it.

Not finding the bar code, she said to me, “Do you know how much this is?”

“I’ve changed my mind,” I replied.

“I don’t think I’ll buy that today.”

As I was walking to my car, I saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car.

“Do you need some help?” I asked.

“I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocker,” she said. “Now I can’t get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to the store I had just left) would have a battery to fit this?”

“Hmmm, I don’t know. Do you have an alarm, too?” I asked.

“No, just this remote thingy,” she answered, handing it and her car keys to me.

As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied, “Why don’t you drive home and think it over.”

And while I can’t imagine this

being true, my friend told of a story that he had read in the paper about a young mother who called 9-1-1 asking the dispatcher if she needed to take her little kid to the emergency room because he had just eaten some ants. The dispatcher calmly told her to give the child an antihistamine and he should be fine.

“Oh no!” the young mother exclaimed. “I just gave him some ant killer!”

“I’m sending an ambulance!” the dispatcher replied.

These incidents got me to thinking about the perks of having recently reached 60 years old.

Kidnappers are not very interested in you.

But, if you are taken in a hostage situation, you’re likely to be released first.

Friends and family no longer expect you to “run” anywhere.

People no longer view you as a hypochondriac. You actually have most of the diseases for which you have symptoms.

You no longer need to learn anything the hard way.

Nothing you buy will likely wear out.

You can eat dinner at 4 p.m. with friends. My friends and I usually try to beat the clock at the DoubleTree or head over to Texas Roadhouse for their early dine specials.

You can live without sex but not your glasses. (I rarely attract the opposite sex with my Mr. Magoo specs on. So they’re mutually exclusive.)

You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.

You can now sing along with most elevator music.

Your investments in health insurance are finally beginning to pay off.

Your knees can more accurately forecast the weather than most meteorologists can.

Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either. ■

Kevin: I, too, like Honda cars, but the local dealer was not very forthcoming for our story. It was something to the effect of, “We’ve been around a long time and they know what we got.”

And you’re quite right about Honda having a Mobility Assistance Program. In fact, right now you can get a $1,000 rebate toward the installation of approved adaptive equipment. Why we couldn’t get that information from the local dealer is both a mystery and disappointment to me. My advice is to shop around and find a dealer that is eager to earn your business.  “I have my doubts about Sprouts. I noticed on my receipt from a recent purchase an extra 1 percent fee. I believe, ‘a penny saved is a penny earned’ and I’m not happy about it and doubtful that I will return.” - Evelyn C., Grand Junction Kevin: Evelyn, I agree with you. The fee you refer to is called a Public Improvement Fee. It’s a bit of financial sleight-of-hand used by places like the City of Grand Junction to attract private investment, to of all places, the busiest retail corridor in western Colorado. Go figure. The problem is that these fees (taxes) are becoming much too common. Who am I? I do my best at being thankful each day, but this winter season left me in a different state of emotion.

It was a long, bleak and cold, cold, did I say cold (?) winter. Now that I feel semi-warm again, I will give thanks for the spring and what this winter did to make me appreciate spring.

I am embarking on a spring ritual of cleaning out junk. Not physical, but emotional junk I can rid myself of to make room for more blessings to come in.

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to write about this, but to no avail. Then, low and behold, I was inundated with a subject many times over and so I am writing about it.

“Who am I?” Try answering this question without placing any labels upon yourself. Not what are you, like male/female; mother/father; mortician/bus driver/doctor, etc. but who are you. Can you even begin to get past, “I am”?

Probably not, because all else is a label. Why can we not get past labels? We have a need to fit into a niche. “I am” -- really says it all doesn’t it? We carry enough labels around with us. Every time we fill out a questionnaire, I wonder what would happen if we just wrote “I am”. A computer would probably crash.

I am refusing to be a label any more. Join me. Just be who you are in your heart and soul and smile.

nd-of-life decisions are difficult. What kind of healthcare will you want? How will you want to live the end of your life if you are seriously ill?

The time to make those decisions is when you’re healthy, says Bryan Newman, chaplain and manager of Spiritual Care at St. Mary’s Hospital. Doing some decision making and planning now can bring you and your family peace of mind. A special workshop, sponsored by the Advance Care Planning Task Force, a group of local healthcare and social agencies, can help you get started.

“These things are not easy to think about or talk about, even with those closest to us,” says Newman. But talking with your family accomplishes two important things.

First, you can be sure your wishes will be carried out even if you can’t speak for yourself; and second, it frees your family from having to make decisions on your behalf during a very emotional time.
