BeaconFest: a bounty of senior fun!

Over 90 different vendor booths will be set up to provide current and prospective seniors with information about products and services available to help them successfully navigate the aging process. We have home improvement folks, health and nutrition information, representatives from many of our local assisted living facilities, government officials, beauty products and services, longevity screenings, real estate professionals, and even a dentist!

eaconFest is a celebration of all that’s “boomer” and “senior” related. Last year, a record number of people attended this festive event.

This year’s senior fair will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, April 17 at the Two Rivers Convention Center in downtown Grand Junction.

Why attend BeaconFest?

This year’s BeaconFest will feature over a dozen entertainers, including the ever-popular King’n Trio. Free seminars will be offered on topics as wide-ranging as the proper fitting of dental implants to financial planning.

Red Hatters gather for fun!

Friends for the Fun of It members gather for lunch at the Wine Country Inn in Palisade.

ave you ever known a group of senior church ladies who have been asked to leave a store because they were getting too rowdy?

If not, then you haven’t met the Ardie Bell Mad Hatters, just one of 20,000 international Red Hat Society chapters.

“We have done some of the kookiest things,” Queen Ardie Bell Cunningham, 85, said.

For example, this group of ladies, who connected through church, took the church van for a fun winery outing. They jokingly agreed that if anyone asked, they would claim they were buying wine for communion.

“We’re just a bunch of nuts,” Cunningham said.

The Red Hat Society is a way to shout back at the stigma of how mature women in society should act. Since it’s formation in 1998, the Red Hat

Society has taken off like wildfire and by the end of 2000, was being referred to as the second women’s movement. Red Hat ladies believe silliness is the comedic relief of life.

“The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and élan,” Red Hat Society Founder Sue Ellen Cooper once said. “Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

It all started years ago, when Cooper impulsively bought a bright red hat at a thrift shop. A couple of years later she came across the poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph, depicting older women in purple clothes and red hats. She gave a friend a red hat and a copy of the poem for her 50th birthday, wanting to encourage that friend to grow older in a playful manner. That friend repeated the gesture and so on.

The original group of women decided to go out in full regalia, as described in the poem. It was a huge hit, and soon, their group swelled and

they encouraged others to form their own chapters.

Thus, the Red Hat Society was born. Cooper’s gift of the red hat changed thousands of women’s lives forever.

“Hatquarters” is in Fullerton, California. The Red Hat Society offers support to its 500,000 members in 50 states and 26 countries. They have sought to gain higher positive visibility for women and continue to reshape the way women are viewed by today’s culture.

The Red Hat Society sees their activities as an opportunity for those who have shouldered numerous responsibilities their whole life at home, work and in the community, to take a well-deserved recess and be given permission to play.

“We’re just old ladies playing dress up,” Julie Witt, 72, said.

In 2005, Witt learned about the Red Hat Society on the Internet and decided to bring some excitement into the lives of a local group of ladies.

rowing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.

And growing older doesn’t mean you have to act old.

If there’s anything we should learn from children, it’s to laugh more. On average, children laugh over 400 times a day compared to adults averaging 16 times. How many times have you laughed out loud today?

Since asking your doctor to reset your odometer is not an option, choose to spend time with the right people. You’ll find there’s only one way to happily grow older—with a healthy sense of humor!

Taking mental health days We can all learn a lot from Jan Gammill. At 65, she is living proof that laughter is contagious. You can’t spend time around this spirited, retired kindergarten teacher without smiling, giggling or laughing. She radiates joy and a love of life at any age.

“Kids keep life in perspective and bring you back to what’s really important,” Gammill said. “Life in general, our health as we age, and the news and things on TV can be depressing. I find that spending time with friends I can laugh with is very

therapeutic. I call these laughterfilled outings mental health days.”

Gammill is part of a close-knit group of friends who meet for coffee one morning a week. They all have T-shirts proudly displaying their group’s name “Half Full” (vs. the cup being half empty).

“These friends support and encourage each other and help find the humor in situations,” Gammill said.

“If we didn’t laugh about it, we’d cry.”

Making the best choice For Frank Klapal, 87, having a good sense of humor is a choice.

“The best thing I’ve tried to do with my mind is have a good attitude in the morning and you’ll enjoy your day better,” Klapal said. “I try to lead by example and hope my attitude will spread to other people. I can look around and think I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

Klapal chooses to be grateful every day, despite having lost most of his eyesight. He made his wife, Shirley, 85, blush when they first met and still does today.

Debbie and Ralph Lovato, 56 and 67, make humor part of their daily life.

“We laugh a lot and give each other a bad time,” Debbie said. “Humor has saved our marriage a few times. It keeps us on the positive side of things.

We think of something to make the other one laugh and then move on.”

Ralph grew up as the class clown, which helped him get through tough times. Today, the first thing you notice about him is his sense of humor, not his health challenges.

“I really enjoy making people laugh,” Ralph said. “Want to hear a dirty joke? A white poodle fell in a puddle. Want to hear another one?

He fell in again!”

at yourself and surround yourself with friends who make it easy to laugh.

“Laughing cures what ails you,” he said.

Debbie said it’s either laugh or cry.

“And I read that laughing is supposed to keep you young,” she said.

And she’s right. Growing older with grace and humor takes practice, but doctors and researchers prove the benefits far outweigh the conscious effort. If you’re not enjoying the idea of growing older, the missing link may be a lack of laughter.

The long-term benefits of laughter

• Laughter lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks. A dose of the funnies in the paper may be the best medicine.

• Laugher reduces stress hormones your body produces and cuts the anxiety and stress impacts on your body. Telling someone a funny joke can relieve some of the day’s stress and help you reap the health benefits of laughter.

• Laughter is a fun ab workout.

When you laugh, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs. Get toned and have fun at

the same time.

• Laughter is a great cardio workout, especially for those whose physical activity is limited. It gets your heart pumping and burns a similar amount of calories per hour as walking.

• Laughter builds immunity. When you laugh, you boost the activity of T cells, which are specialized immune system cells to help you fight off illness. The next time you feel a cold coming on, add laughter to your prevention plan.

• Laughter eases pain. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.

Laughing can help ease chronic pain and make you feel better all over.

• Laughter brings extra oxygen to the brain, increases creativity, alertness and memory.

• Laughter relaxes the muscles in the body and increases and improves breathing patterns. It helps defend against respiratory infections, even reducing the frequency of colds.

• Humor makes you happy. And it works quickly. Less than a half-second after exposure to something funny, an electrical wave moves through the higher brain functions, triggering the emotional system, which makes you happier, and motor skills, which make you smile or laugh.

• Look younger with laughter. When you laugh, your face becomes red due to an increase in blood supply, nourishing the skin and making you glow.

Laughing even activates and moistens the tear gland, adding a little sparkle to your eyes.

• Humor results in shorter hospital stays. Studies have shown an atmosphere of humor results in better patient cure, less anesthesia time and surgery time, and shorter hospital stays.

• Humor fights disease. Doctors have found that people who laugh more and have a positive outlook on life tend to fight diseases better than people who tend to be more negative. So smile, laugh and live longer!

If you can’t seem to find something to laugh about, laugh at yourself.

Laugh at the mismatched earrings or shoes you wore to the grocery store or when you put the cereal box in the refrigerator.

And when your granddaughter innocently asks you if you knew Adam and Eve, don’t take it personally. Take a dose of humor, celebrate life and laugh long and hearty. ■

Ingredients: 3 chicken breasts, cubed/chopped Olive oil 1/8 t + pinch of marjoram 1/4 t + pinch of tarragon 2 pinches rosemary Salt to taste 1/4 t black pepper 1 onion, chopped 3 carrots, chopped

3 celery stalks, chopped 1 clove garlic 3/4 c lentils 3 2/3 c low-sodium chicken broth 1/2 T spicy brown mustard 1/3 half and half or heavy cream 4 t cornstarch Dash of paprika Fresh juice of half of a lemon (to taste)

Add all the herbs, salt and pepper to a mortar/pestle; grind together. Set aside. (If you don’t have a pestle, place them in a storage bag, seal after expelling air, and use a rolling pin to grind them together.)

In a Dutch oven/casserole pot add olive oil and heat to medium high. Quickly brown the chicken pieces in the oil, remove and set aside.

In the same pan, add onions, celery and carrots. Sauté for 2 minutes then add garlic. Add lentils and stir for an additional 2 minutes.

Return the chicken to the pot and add the dried seasonings. Add the broth and the spicy brown mustard. Bring to boil. Taste for seasoning.

Once it has boiled for about 5 minutes, cover with lid and place in a pre-heated 350-degree oven. Bake for 45 minutes.

Once removed from the oven, place on the stovetop over medium heat. Open the lid and remove about 2/3 cup of the hot broth. Place it in another bowl and slowly whisk in the cornstarch. It will become a cloudy, thick, near paste-like consistency.

Set aside.

Check the broth in the pot for seasoning and spices. Add the half and half or heavy cream slowly and stir well. Add paprika.

Slowly incorporate the cornstarch roux into the pot. Mix well and taste for seasonings again. Add the fresh lemon juice and stir. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Serve.

By Gayle LagmanCreswick Dear Old Bag: In response to the neverending problem of who pays for a date, maybe your readers would be interested in how I resolve this non-issue.

1. He who does the asking does the paying!

2. If a gentleman takes me out for a second date, that’s great. But on the third date, I ask him and I pay.

Heavens, what universe are these shallow senior women living in?

The Old Bag Rules for Casual Dating for those on a fixed income are not for everyone. Hope you do not miss out on a wonderful man because he goes by my rules. O.B. Dear Old Bag: My wife passed away a few months ago. Since her passing I have been obsessed with wondering how I will die. My wife was a wonderful woman, but she had six months of hell before she died. I know we never know what path our homestretch will follow, but at the thought of how she died, I feel I must do something to avoid such an ending for me. What are your thoughts? Dear Old Bag: I very much enjoyed your talk to our alumni group last month. Someone asked you a question about what you thought about casual dating if your spouse was in a nursing home and had been paralyzed for years and unable to speak but was still aware of what was going on. You said you felt that was different than an Alzheimer’s patient who did not know you anymore and was not aware, and you said you felt it would not be right to date in that case. But what is a person to do?

It is lonely after years and years.

Signed, Alum Dear Alum: If your spouse in the nursing home is aware, I am sure she is lonely too. I did not mean that you should not be active socially. I meant that I felt you should not develop a relationship with the opposite sex if your spouse is still aware. You can still golf, play cards, have dinner with friends, enjoy family, go to church, travel, etc. It is a tough time and it’s very important to stay active.

Remember, this is only my opinion.

Everyone must decide for themselves based on their own set of ethics.

25 tips for preventing falls

mong older adults, falling is the leading cause of injury and death by injury. Of all fall-related fractures, hip breaks cause the greatest number of deaths and lead to the most severe health problems, reducing quality of life.

As we age, our senses, reflexes and coordination diminish. Illness and taking medication can contribute to balance problems. So can osteoporosis, a disease that makes bones more likely to snap.

There are many steps you can take to prevent a fall and breaking a bone. Here is a list of some of the best tips I collected from various experts.

1) Get your bones tested.

Your doctor can prescribe medications that will make your bones harder to break.

2) Regular exercise makes you stronger and keeps your joints, tendons and ligaments flexible. Weight-bearing exercise such as walking may slow bone loss from osteoporosis.

3) As you know, drinking alcohol affects your reflexes and balance. Limit your intake.

4) When lying or sleeping, get up slowly to avoid feeling lightheaded.

5) Avoid temperature extremes in your home, as they can make you dizzy.

6) Wear rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes.

7) Always hold the handrails on stairways.

8) Don’t stand on a chair to get to something. Buy a reach stick, a device that you can find at many hardware stores.

9) Clear floors where you walk.

10) Never carry a package that obstructs your view of the next step.

11) Mount grab bars near toilets, tubs and showers.

12) Place nonskid mats, strips or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet, especially bathtubs and shower stalls.

13) Let the soap suds go down the drain before you move around in the shower. If you are prone to falling, use a shower chair and a handheld shower attachment.

14) Position night-lights and light switches close to your bed.

15) Use bright bulbs in your home.

16) Keep your telephone near your bed. During the day, keep a portable phone with you.

17) Tack down all carpets and area rugs.

18) Close cabinet doors and drawers so you won’t run into them.

19) Consider using a cane especially when it rains or snows.

20) Use a shoulder bag, fanny pack or backpack to leave hands free.

21) Check curb heights before stepping down.

22) Look for differences in floor levels when entering rooms.

23) Ensure that every room in your home has a light switch near the entrance.

24) Practice balancing. Hold onto something such as a countertop and stand on one leg at a time for a minute. Gradually increase the time.

Try balancing with your eyes closed.

Stand on your toes, then rock back to balance on your heels. Hold each position 10 seconds.

25) Be especially careful walking around pets. ■

ave you wondered why so many old people tend to develop rather pointed faces? It’s because of how bones develop.

Dr. Paul Brand describes bones and how they develop in his book, “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” Since our bones are hidden, they don’t display their “flow of life,” as Brand put it.

If you break a bone, as most of us have at some point in our long life, an elaborate and amazing process commences.

“Excited repair cells invade in swarms,” Brand wrote. Within a couple of weeks, a cartilage-like sheath called callus surrounds the region of the break and cementlaying cells enter the jellied mass.

The repair cells are called the osteoblasts. They are like pothole fillers for the busted bone. They break down the callus and replace it with fresh bone. Eventually, new bone covers both ends of the broken bone.

With magnification it’s possible to see the osteoblasts diligently replacing over-aged bone matter.

When you were young, 100 percent of the bones in your body were replaced each year. So when you were, say, 5 years old, you had no remnants of your 4-year-old jawbone.

Because of the nature of the bone’s DNA, the shape of your jaw remained the same. Only it was larger. As you reach the beginning of old age, about 18 percent of your bone gets replaced each year. But old bone doesn’t surrender its territory easily.

“It must be dynamited and vacuumed out,” Brand wrote.

For the bones to keep working, our body has osteoclasts—kind of like a demolition team.

These clasts are relatively large.

They are jam-packed with an average of 10 to 30 nuclei. These clasts scavenge each bit of bone, one cell at a time.

“They tunnel through the bone

as easily as a mole through a lawn,” Brand wrote.

They are opening up holes for the blasts to fill. These blasts rejuvenate and deposit a whole new supply of healthy fiber for the bone.

The clast cell leads a suicidal life. It burns itself up in about 48 hours and dissipates as waste.

The blasts and the clasts are actively at work throughout your life. The blasts tend to dominate the first half of your life. They are busy laying down new bone in an orderly fashion necessary for growth.

Eventually the demolition clasts outstrip the weary blasts. So in old age, the teeth sockets decrease in size, the chin begins to protrude, the jaw angles in and the elderly are left with more severe, pointed faces.

And this is why a bone fracture causes trauma for the elderly.

Their blasts are no longer up to the rigor of routine repair that they were capable of in past years. Bones heal slowly.

As for the old bones in your body, blasts factor necessary adjustments for stress into their design.

“All bone elements are arranged in perfectly engineered intersecting lines of stress, like the girders on a steel bridge,” Brand wrote.

If you break your foot, for example, the pain makes you take shorter steps. Gradually, those lines of stress in the heel bone will change and end up at a new angle to the leg.

“The blasts will accommodate to meet the new challenge,” Brand wrote.

The stress of exercising our legs or lifting barbells stimulates bone growth. If you have to stay in bed for a long period of time, you can lose 50 percent of the calcium in your bones.

Astronauts in space don’t get customary exercise so they lose 20 percent of the calcium in their bones.

That’s why taking walks is important for seniors to ward off the dangerous broken hip from a fall. ■

Is curing cancer the wrong cause?

new study involving several universities indicates that research into the delay of aging would have a better payoff than advances in curing fatal diseases such as cancer and heart problems.

According to analysis by scientists from the University of Southern California, Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and other institutions, even modest gains in scientific understanding in delaying aging and infirmities of old age would provide better health as well as greater economic returns.

The number of people age 65 and older is anticipated to double in the next half century, according to the Census Bureau.

That would mean 100 million elders in 2060.

“Now disabled life expectancy is rising faster than total life expectancy, leaving the number of years that one can expect to live in good health unchanged or diminished,” said Dana Goldman of USC’s Center for Health Policy and Economics.

The study results indicated declining returns for continuing the present research “disease model,” which is the approach of treating fatal diseases independently rather than tackling the shared, underlying cause of frailty and disability—aging itself.

Aging more slowly “can delay the onset and progression of many disabling diseases simultaneously,” Goldman predicted.

Reducing the cancer rate by 25 percent in the next few decades (that would be in line with the most optimistic historical trends) would barely improve population health, the analysis concluded.

The same situation is true for heart disease, which is the leading cause of fatalities worldwide.

The findings follow the same line found in earlier studies, which showed that wiping out cancer completely would increase life expectancy only by about three years.

“Even a marginal success in slowing aging is going to have a huge impact on health and quality of life,” corresponding author S. Jay Olshansky of the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois-Chicago said. “This is a fundamentally new approach to public health that would attack the underlying risk factors for all fatal and disabling diseases. We need to begin the research now. We don’t know which mechanisms are going to work to actually delay aging, and there are probably a variety of ways this could be accomplished, but we need to decide now that this is worth pursuing.”

Several lines of scientific inquiry already have shown how we might age more slowly, including studies of the genetics of centenarians and other long-living people.

Slowing the signs of biological aging has also been accomplished in animals, using drugs and restriction of calories.

“Shifting the focus of medical investment to delayed aging instead of targeting diseases individually would lead to significant gains in physical health and social engagement,” Goldman said. “We see extremely large population health benefits and the benefits will extend to future generations. There are major fiscal challenges, but these are manageable with reasonable policy changes, and the economic value of such a shift is too large to ignore.” ■

How the British explain things Submitted by Genevra Shal A woman came home early and found her husband in their bedroom making love to a very attractive young woman.

“You are a disrespectful pig!” she cried. “How dare you do this to me—a faithful wife, the mother of your children! I’m leaving you. I want a divorce right away!”

“Hang on just a minute, love,” the husband replied. “At least let me tell you what happened.”

“Go ahead,” she sobbed, “but they’ll be the last words you’ll say to me!”

“Well, I was getting into the car to drive home and this young lady here asked me for a lift,” the husband began. “She looked so down and out and defenseless that I took pity on her and let her into the car. The poor thing devoured them in moments.

Since she needed a good cleanup, I suggested a shower. While she was doing that, I noticed her clothes were dirty and full of holes so I threw them away. Then I gave her the designer jeans that you have had for a few years but don’t wear because you say they are too tight. I also gave her the fancy underthings that were your anniversary present, which you don’t wear because I don’t have good taste. I found the sexy blouse my sister gave you for Christmas that you don’t wear just to annoy her, and I also donated those boots you bought at the expensive boutique and don’t wear because someone at work has the same pair.”

The husband took a quick breath and continued.

“She was so grateful for my understanding and help that as I walked her to the door, she turned to me with tears

in her eyes and said, ‘Do you have anything else that your wife doesn’t use?’”

A local story Submitted by Jan Weeks After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year outside of Buffalo, New York, scientists found traces of copper cable dating back 120 years. They came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, a Los Angeles, California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet somewhere just outside Oceanside.

Shortly after, a story in the LA Times read, “California archaeologists, reporting a finding of 200-yearold copper cable, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 100 years earlier than the New Yorkers.”

One week later, a local newspaper in Mack, Colorado reported the following: “After digging down about 30 feet deep in his pasture near the community of Mack, Henry Olson, a hell of an engineer and a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Henry has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Mack had already gone wireless.”

Science Remember back in the late 1980s when four women and four men entered the glass-enclosed three-acre Biosphere 2, not to come out for two years? Headed home Our two-week snowbird trek was rounded out with two historical sites well worth the stops as we headed back to Colorado.

The Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, near Ganado, continues to house an active store and artist quarters. Established in 1885, all furnishings and art are original, allowing you to literally walk back in time.

ent Native American history living in these redrock canyons. Many cliff dwellings can be viewed on canyon walls, as well as current Navajo residents farming the winding canyon floors.

We arrived home from our minisnowbird excursion on a budget with new experiences, memories, many pictures and the desire to return in the future. But for now, sleeping in our own bed feels like heaven. There really is no place like home. â–

Q. I just bought a home in Grand Junction with a large established garden. I am not sure how to take care of the many different perennials that are beginning to emerge. How can I keep them healthy and happy?

Congratulations on your new home! Here are some general guidelines for maintaining most of your perennials.

Inspect the plants as they come up. Are they in large clumps or is the center looking dead? It could be time to divide them. After several years, many perennials need to be divided for better blooming. This means removing the plant from the ground, cutting the roots into viable clumps, discarding any diseased or woody roots (usually at the center of the original root clump), and replanting.

Late afternoon or a cloudy day is the best time to transplant your perennials. This gives them some time to acclimate to their new surroundings without the glare and heat of the sun on them.

A good rule of thumb is to divide spring-blooming perennials in the fall and summer, then fall-blooming perennials in the spring.

Q. I am noticing white patches

on my lawn this year where the snow lasted for months and months. Will it come back or do I need to treat it with anything?

Gray snow mold caused by the fungus Typhula incarnate can occur on our lawns during periods of prolonged snow cover like we had this winter, but it can also occur where leaves and other debris have accumulated on lawns. Heavy symptoms occur on north facing lawns, shaded lawns and where snow was shoveled onto turf or where drifts formed.

Which reminds me: Always shovel your snow onto planting beds, not your grassy areas.

Circular patches (6-12 inches) will have a moldy appearance when fun-

gus is actively growing, usually just as the snow melts. Under severe conditions, these smaller patches may grow together to form large, matted areas that appear to be dead. This disease rarely kills home bluegrass lawns, although young seedlings from a late fall seeding may be killed (fall sod will be fine).

Fungicide applications are not recommended when snow mold occurs in a home lawn. The best way to speed recovery is to remove dead and matted material by light raking.

Light spring nitrogen fertilization will help speed the growth of new grass from the underground stems that are not harmed by the snow mold fungus. Lawns that appear slow to recover this spring will benefit from core cultivation, followed by over seeding with the same grass species already present in the lawn.

Contrary to popular belief, late-season fertilization (also called “fall” or “winterizer” fertilization) neither encourages snow mold nor increases its severity. It will encourage more rapid healing and recovery when lawns are afflicted with snow mold. ■

Garden Checklist  Clean up the garden. Remove last year’s dead plants, rake back winter mulches, and top-dress beds with compost.

 Yellow jackets can be a serious nuisance in late summer when they aggressively defend their territory (your garden).

To attract the queens before they build new nests, place traps out now.

 Cut flower stalks back to the ground on daffodils, hyacinths and other spring flowering bulbs as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage until it dies naturally.  Check mower blades for sharpness. Set them at 2-1/2 to 3 inches, and maintain this height throughout the year.

 Watch for new growth on roses around mid April. Once it starts, prune back dead or damaged canes. ■

Plants prosper when planted with friends

By Jan Weeks Are you looking for a nontoxic way to keep pests out of your garden and grow bigger and better crops?

Companion planting pairs different vegetables and fruits (yes, tomatoes are fruits) to repel insects. It’s been around for millennia, used by ancient peoples as well as today’s organic gardeners. Here are four reasons to follow this planting practice.

• Companions help each other grow. Tall plants such as dill and nicotiana provide shade for lettuce and other sun-sensitive shorter plants.

• Companions use garden space efficiently. Upright plants provide natural “stakes” for vining plants. Native Americans planted beans around corn and let the beans crawl up the stalks.

• Companions prevent pest problems. Herbs, especially, send strong

Lenten Rose (Helleborus sp) - This lovely perennial will add much needed color and texture to your shade garden. All species of Hellebore grow well in Colorado but are grown best in shade due to our bright sunshine and dry air. Be sure to amend your soil with compost and water on a regular basis. Plant at the front of the border or along a walkway to enjoy the beautiful blooms. They are perfect companion plants for Bleeding Hearts, Hostas and Heuchera. Hellebore clumps rarely need division.

Their foliage is evergreen and deer resistant. The blooms come in many different colors. They are long lasting and perfect for cut flowers.

• Companions attract beneficial insects. Ladybugs, honeybees, and other pollinators help your garden grow.

Rose growers have long planted garlic around their bushes to repel aphids and other pests. Cucumber and dill partner up to keep spider mites away and attract honeybees and ladybugs. Chives improve the taste of carrots, and if you plant basil among your tomatoes, not only does it boost the tomato flavor, but you have the makings of a tasty salad right there.

Who says veggie plots have to be green and boring? Plant marigolds and nasturtiums along the edges to repel the bad bugs, and place a couple pots of mint (don’t plant in the garden or it will take over) to deter flies and mosquitos. Potatoes like sweet alyssum, which attracts delicate beneficial insects, such as predatory wasps. Sweet alyssum can also form a living ground cover under plants like broccoli. And your garden will smell sweet all summer. Yarrow repels aphids and attracts insects that prey on garden grubs, like ladybugs and wasps.

See the chart, top right, for a short list of plants and what they like and don’t like.

So does all this mean that you need a million acres to keep “unfriendly” plants away from each other? Not at all. Just be aware of what you put next to what. And accidently pairing up a couple of “unsociables” near each other won’t kill either one.

You’ll still get your crops but maybe not as high a yield. Map your garden and make notes to see what works and what doesn’t so you can rearrange your plantings next year.

Most of all, don’t stress over all this information. Relax. Enjoy. That’s what gardening’s supposed to be about. ■

Dine in the Blind to support local low-vision services

magine living in a world where something as simple as sharing a meal becomes a challenge because of low vision or near blindness.

The Center for Independence hosts their Dine in the Blind event to bring awareness to people with perfectly good eyesight by offering an experience of eating in the dark.

Coordinator for Outreach Lexi Sherwood said the event is designed to be fun and educational.

“Participants will get to experience what it’s like to learn to navigate without sight,” she said.

The third annual supper and fundraiser on Saturday, April 12 will feature an Italian feast of lasagna (meat lovers, vegetarian or gluten-free), garlic bread, antipasto salad and tiramisu. Sherwood, 58, said diners are blindfolded upon arrival and are guided to their tables.

“We give everybody a big bib,” she said. “Don’t come dressed up because it will get a little messy.”

Dinner is served at 5 p.m. and the blinds come off at 6 p.m. for the live auction.

“Buster Cattles will auction thousands of dollars worth of items ranging from home décor to adventure trips,” Sherwood said.

Proceeds raised from the auction will fund grants for low-vision programs offered at CFI. Cathy Johnson, 65, is CFI program manager. She said CFI provides resources for people of any age with low vision.

“We offer support groups and socialization, and we conduct home visits,” she said. “People with impaired vision are able to remain home and live independently if they have help.”

CFI does not sell products for the vision impaired but they help locate equipment and recommend resources.

One helpful piece of hardware is the Closed-Circuit TV (CCTV) elec-

tronic magnification reading system that enables visually impaired users to read a variety of materials. The CCTV projects a magnified image of the printed page onto a video monitor or television screen. A CCTV can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $3,200.

“We get donations of these items from time to time, and we have a newer model here at the center,” Johnson said.

Most of CFI’s members share information and practical tips in their low-vision groups.

“You don’t have to be completely blind to join,” Johnson said. “If we grow old enough, most of us will end up with vision problems like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.”

Johnson said they once had a chaplain come in to talk to members about the grief process related to losing sight, and a police officer come to talk about identity theft and fraud prevention. She said they are currently planning a class in self-defense.

Johnson said the vision impaired also offer valuable assistance to each other.

“One man who was blind from birth taught the group how to fold paper money in such a way that you could differentiate between denominations,” she said.

Programs at CFI are made available to the community through grants and donations, but Johnson stressed that the funding pool is getting smaller, which is why events like Dine in the Blind are important.

Admission to Dine in the Blind is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

great fear of Western Colorado cattlemen was an invasion of sheep. Their primary complaint was that sheep grazed to the roots, preventing cattle from getting enough grass and not permitting the range to grow back. Stockmen came to the Craig area to establish ranches in the mid-1880s, but in 1894 they were infuriated when sheep that had summered in the Sierra Madre Range, near Rawlins, Wyoming, were herded to their rangeland. At a point south of Craig and Meeker, 3,800 sheep were stampeded over a bluff into Parachute Creek. A posse from Parachute discovered the hill of dead sheep at the foot of the 1,000-foot bluff, along with injured herder Carl Brown who had tried to protect the sheep. The Craig Courier reported the crime on September 14, stating the raiders were not apprehended.

Colorado cattlemen passed resolutions the next May to prohibit sheep from entering the Yampa River Valley. The Cheyenne Leader reported resolutions passed which prohibited sheep from grazing or being herded through the “country drained by the Bear River, which includes all the territory from the Continental Divide west to Utah...” Sheep were not to be herded anywhere in northwestern Colorado. Voicing concern that the sheepherders would ignore the resolutions, the Leader reported “...stock feeders and cowboys, with a force of eight hundred to a thousand (men) are holding themselves in readiness, forcibly to resist any advance made south of Hahn’s Peak by the sheep owners. A war is imminent and unless the more conservative heads prevail, the rifle will figure a conspicuous part in a Routt County sheep war. The sheep that are causing the trouble

are some 60,000 head belonging to J. G. and G.W. Edwards and others in Wyoming.”

The dispute was loosely settled, but Jack Edwards still, according to the Leader, “…wanted to move his sheep south so that he could load and ship them from Colorado rail heads operated by the Denver & Rio Grande.”

One incident took place November 15, 1899, when 40 masked men rode up to a camp on the lower Snake River, clubbing and scattering 3,000 sheep. Many sheepmen in Western Colorado, often Basques from the French-Spanish border, began to receive sympathy because of the aggressive tactics by cattlemen. By 1915 sheep were legally grazing in Routt National Forest and in 1920 the Northwest Sheepgrowers Association was formed for mutual protection.

Eventually sheepherders took their flocks to marginal and high altitude ranges that were unsuitable for cattle but where sheep fared very well.

Much land became part of the federal forestry department, and the wideopen West had ever-growing limitations for both sheep and cattle men.

According to a Basque Guide, tensions often ran high in the Grand Junction area between ranchers and sheepmen, sometimes initiated by malicious tricks of local cowboys.

Because cattlemen often showed little respect for local sheepherders, the Basques could not assume common courtesies, such as the proper burial of loved ones. Jean Urruty and 10-12 other Basque helped trail 6,000 head of sheep to Piñon Mesa through Grand Junction in 1926, crossing the Colorado River to the Redlands on the quite weakened, wooden Main Street bridge.

An accident in 1937 raised eyebrows of local cowboys. Well-liked local range rider Charlie Glass’ light truck overturned near Cisco, Utah.

The Daily Sentinel headline stated “Negro Cowboy Dies in Utah Car Accident…” Glass’ two passengers were sheepmen who had been wintering their herds in the Thompson and Cisco area. According to the Museum of Moab’s website, “Charlie was wounded in a violent skirmish

with a group of Basque shepherds in response to his shooting of one of their countrymen (and died on his way to the hospital).”

Today, many ranches still exist in Western Colorado, although ranching, in general, is becoming increasingly technological. Symposiums can be attended via the Internet on such issues as drought management for range and pastures.

Local ranches still meet many of the needs of Western Colorado communities, however. The Roan Creek Ranch boasts, “We raise beef that is only fed grass in the summer and hay in the winter.

The hay is grown right here on our ranches.” Others carry on traditions and innovations that allow them to be successful. The Paonia Ranger District of Gunnison National Forest, for instance, issues term grazing permits to 50 ranchers to graze 8,000 cattle and 18,000 sheep on 50,000 acres of reserved wilderness land. Once favored by Teddy Roosevelt, the 2,600acre Bear Wallow Ranch near Glenwood Springs grazes cattle on federal land within the White River National Forest. Spreads such as the Double RL Ranch near Ridgway remind us of the many brands used throughout the history of ranching in Colorado.

Western Colorado has a rich history of and continues to promote quality ranching in both cattle and sheep. Organizations such as the Colorado CattleWomen are dedicated to promoting today’s beef and sheep industries. Should you freeze your credit reports?

A

lthough the odds of having your identity stolen remain quite low, anyone who’s ever had their bank or credit card account compromised knows what a pain it can be to unravel the mess. Sometimes enterprising hackers just need your Social Security number, address and date of birth to start opening new accounts in your name.

Many victims don’t realize anything’s wrong until they apply for a new account and find their credit has been trashed or they start getting calls from collection agencies regarding unfamiliar accounts. More and more people have begun blocking access to information in their credit reports, even if there hasn’t been any fraudulent activity, by instituting a security freeze.

A credit security freeze is where you instruct the three major credit bureaus to disallow new creditors from viewing your credit report and score. Because most businesses won’t lend without first checking your report, a freeze can deter identity thieves.

Before going to the trouble and expense of doing a credit freeze, however, learn how the process works and be aware of several possible inconveniences: First, determine if you really need a credit freeze. If your credit or debit card is lost or stolen, you won’t necessarily be a victim of identity theft, which usually requires additional personal information. Similarly, fraudulent billing charges don’t necessarily indicate identity theft. Verify by reviewing your credit reports.

You can order one free report annually from the three major bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com; otherwise you’ll pay a small fee.

To freeze your credit reports, you must individually contact each credit bureau: Equifax (www.equifax.com), Experian (www.experian.com) and TransUnion (www.transunion.com).

You’ll need to supply your name, address, birth date, Social Security

number and other personal information.

Filing requirements and fees vary based on your state of residence (commonly $5 to $10). People over age 65 sometimes receive a discount and if you are an identity theft victim, credit freezes are free although you’ll need to provide supporting paperwork.

Once implemented, you’ll receive a unique personal identification number (PIN) from each credit bureau.

Store these PINs securely because you’ll need them to temporarily lift a credit freeze and then reinstate it— usually for a fee.

All these fees can really add up, so if you’re planning any action that requires a credit check, you may want to hold off implementing a freeze.

It can take up to five business days to process a request for a security freeze or temporary lift, so plan major purchases or other credit actions carefully.

A few additional facts about credit freezes: Although freezes can help block the creation of new credit accounts, they can’t prevent an identity thief from making charges to existing accounts.

Your current creditors can still access your credit reports, as can collection agencies acting on their behalf.

Government agencies have access for collecting child support payments or taxes, to investigate Medicaid fraud, or in response to court or administrative orders, subpoenas or search warrants.

You can temporarily lift a credit freeze either for a specific period of time, or for a specific party, say, a potential landlord or employer.

If you lose your PIN, you may request a new one, although there may be a fee.

Bottom line: Always monitor your credit reports to spot errors or fraudulent activity. To take security a step further, consider placing a credit freeze on your reports. ■

Montrose book club promotes discussion, interest among senior bookworms

ookworms of all ages are invited to participate in the Montrose Regional Library’s monthly book club.

“We promote reading and fun by sharing our reading discussions with other people,” the library’s volunteer and adult programs manager Meg Nagel, 63, said.

The group attracts participants of all ages, who read everything from bestsellers to obscure works. At the August meeting, members suggest books to read in the coming year and vote on them. The top 11 books will be read over the course of the year.

“The group is made up of interesting, smart and insightful people,” Nagel said. “Because of that, I love our discussions and because of that, I love our selection of books.”

Fiction or nonfiction, one thing participants can be sure of is a broad selection. The group reads everything from best sellers like “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn to obscure works like “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov, and from science fiction stories like “The Dog Stars” to classics like “The Great Gatsby.”

“I’m really proud of our discussions because we have a really intelligent group and everybody reads differently,” Nagel said.

Nagel said the club’s most recent selection, “The Master and Margarita,” a Russian political satire from the 1930s, provoked powerful discussion among the members.

“Some were really interested in the political side, while others were interested in the fact that the guy who wrote it was a strong Christian living in Soviet Russia,” she said. “It is interesting that everybody finds different messages in what we read.

Some might really hate a book, but after our group discussion they will say, ‘I’m beginning to like the book.’”

Outside of the monthly discussion time, the group will occasionally go and see a movie that is based on a book they have read.

“It just so happened that we chose ‘The Book Thief’ to read in November when the movie came out, so many of us went to see it,” Nagel said.

Nagel believes that the book club is beneficial to the community.

“I think anytime you get people together for discussions, like in a book club to talk about books, it brings up values, hopes and dreams,” she said.

“We may be talking about a book but it brings up other stuff, so people get to know each other and learn to accept and negotiate differences. It is useful to any community to have people who have experience sharing information and accepting differences.”

The list of books to be read by the book club is available at the Montrose Library. Even if someone has not read the current book, they are welcome to attend a meeting to see the dynamics of the club. The club meets from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month in room 102 at Colorado Mesa University’s Montrose Campus, 320 S. Second St. in Montrose. ent is the period of fasting and penitence over the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Eve, recalling Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness.

As kids, we made the ultimate sacrifice of foregoing soda or candy as our lent “penance.” As adults, that changed to more serious abstinence considerations.

But besides giving up something, maybe we should add something, such as a daily reflection period, reading Bible messages, meditating or attending special weekly Lenten observances. There are many ways to honor this time. It’s a matter of finding what is most meaningful to you.

Consider this: At First Christian Church, 1326 N. First St., we offer Lenten Lunches each Wednesday at noon through April 16. How to pick a secure password Ask the computer guy

A

s you know, many websites and software require a username and password. If you are accessing an online game, maybe the security of your password isn’t very important. But what if the password is to your online bank account? You may want to protect it with a state-of-the-art password. But here’s the trick: How do you come up with such a password and also manage to remember it?

Throughout my years as a computer professional, I have found that there are people with a lot to lose financially that are notoriously lacking security with their choice of passwords. I believe it is because they have not taken the time to formulate a password that is secure and easy to remember.

What are the keys to building a secure password?

A strong password starts with the following base elements: • Is at least eight characters long • Does not contain your username, real name, or company name • Does not contain a complete word • Is significantly different from previous passwords • Contains a capital letter(s) • Contains a lowercase letter(s) • Contains a number • Contains a symbol that is on your keyboard (~!@#$%^&*()_+?<.>/) The rules for websites may vary, but most adopt these standards.

A password like “sassy123” when you have a cat named Sassy is a poor choice.

Steer clear of pet names unless you mask their names. For example, use “$” instead of an “s” and substitute “@” for the “a.” Add another arbitrary

symbol and you could come up with S@$$y!@#. (This is using the shift key on 1, 2 and 3 on the end.)

Since S@$$y!@# does not contain any full words and cannot be found in a dictionary, it is a stronger and more secure password. But keep in mind that the use of “@” for “a” and “$” for “s” is still quite common. So choosing the right phrase or name is important as well as choosing the symbols to be incorporated.

When setting up a password for your wireless router access code, consider adding a space in the password and making it more like a phrase. For example create a phrase like “Spot loves to swim.” Now implement the following alphabet: $=s, o=0, ^=v, 3=e, 1=i and you come up with a wireless phrase of “$p0t l0^3$ t0 $w1m” Yes, it is not something that will be easy to remember, but keep in mind that wireless access codes are generally saved by your computer or device.

There are no rules for the alphabet so just get creative and remember to make yourself a key so that you can always refer back to it. When you make a phrase that is easy for you to remember but is difficult to decipher after being put through the alphabet change, it will give you greater protection.

Remember that passwords are private.

So don’t give your password out to anyone unless there is a very good reason for doing so. And if you do have to give it out, once the need has passed, change the password to something different. Lynn called it a culinary adventure. The farm grows a variety of produce, including many types you can’t find in the grocery store. They grow several different types of cucumbers and summer squash, boasting numerous varieties and shapes. Tomatoes are the most popular and prominent fruit at the farm.

“Some people do this as a hobby, but we do it for a living,” Guy, 63, said.

Guy said it takes a lot of hard work to maintain a farm because of dealing with unfavorable weather conditions.

“We have accomplished our vision of a true small family farm,” Guy said.

A 16-week vegetable summer share is $495. Details about their fruit share will be available on their website, www.bordenfarms.com, mid-May. Produce is available for pick up in towns throughout the Western Slope including Montrose, Telluride, Ridgway and Grand Junction.

Senior CommUnity Care, PACE, Volunteers of America celebrates historic milestone With the opening of four new programs this month, the number of Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) now exceeds 100.

PACE, which was developed in San Francisco in the 1970s, helps keep nursing home-eligible elders living in the community. PACE programs bring together a coordinated team of doctors, nurses, social workers and therapists to provide seniors with an individualized care plan that addresses each person’s unique medical care and social needs. The result is higher quality care and far more favorable outcomes compared to traditional care options. There are now 103 PACE organizations operating in 31 states. Senior CommUnity Care offers three-day centers—one in Montrose, Eckert and a satellite site in Paonia.

Delta County Memorial Hospital achieves 20-percent reduction in readmission rates The Colorado Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association in partnership with Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) collected data and announced that Delta County Memorial Hospital had achieved a goal of reducing patient readmissions by 20 percent. The significance of lower readmit rates is that unplanned hospital readmissions exceed $17 billion annually to Medicare. Some 34 other Colorado hospitals also achieved the 20 percent reduction in readmissions goals.

he present state law regarding gifts of money or anything of monetary value given to seniors who receive their Old Age Pension from the state is as follows:

Colorado State Statute 26-2-114 Amount of Assistance Payments— Old Age Pension “The amount of net income from whatever source, either in cash or in kind, which any person qualified for an old age pension may receive shall be deducted from the amount of monthly pension which such person would otherwise receive.”

Recipients are required to report any such income and sign their name under oath that they have done so.

If they do not return the required report, they are terminated from the assistance program. If they do report the extra “income,” that amount is deducted from the assistance they would otherwise receive that month.

If they do not report it, but must sign their name stating that they did, they feel they are forced to lie to keep the assistance money they really need, and they are also threatened with penalty for perjury.

To remedy this problem, State Senator Steve King (republican) has sponsored a bill (Senate Bill 14-013), which amends the current law (Colorado Revised Statutes 26-2-111).

The bill is co-sponsored by State Representative Brittany Pettersen (democrat).

In summary, the new bill (Senate Bill 14-013) states: “For a person eligible for an old age pension, the bill allows the person to receive up to $300 per month in gifts, grants, or donations without reducing the amount of the pension or reporting the gifts, grants, or donations.”

This does not mean that these persons will receive $300 every month. An individual might receive less or even nothing in any particular month. The money does not come from existing state funds or taxes but from family, friends and other legitimate extraneous sources. It’s often a safety net for pensioners.

This bill will be voted on in the General Assembly—full Senate and House of Representatives—and if it passes, will be sent to the governor to be signed into law. The General Assembly is meeting now and time is of the essence. Please contact your area senator and representative by email, phone or special delivery letter and ask him/her to support Senate Bill 14-013.
