New Batman movie proves to be a bargain

I

magine taking your grandchild to the latest princess movie. There, in glorious detail, more vivid than even the best 3-D imaging available, you’re confronted with a live action world of fairy tale castles, dancing belles, and even a charming prince on horseback.

Are you more of the adventurous type?

For you there is the classic movie “Westworld,” starring the late Yule Brynner. It’s the story of an adult theme park where one can experience all the charms the old west had to offer. You’ll have a real, nonlethal gunfight with a lifelike robot playing the part of the bad guy (That would be Yule Brynner.) He’s programmed to scare the wits out of you, but not to cause physical harm.

Is having sex with a robot adultery?

In “Westworld,” you can experience real physical pleasures by visiting the resort’s “cat house.” There, for a fee, animatronic prostitutes will cater to your earthly desires. Which begs the question, “Does having sex with a robot constitute adultery?”

While not a question that we may have to answer, it could very easily be one our grandchildren might confront.

Where will our quest for entertainment take us next?

This was a question momentarily entertained by a house full of theater goers at a recent showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora, Colorado, as a crazed gunman stormed the stage and started shooting at the audience. Is he an actor? Are those real gunshots? Is this part of the show?

The answers became appallingly real.

Did the Aurora theatergoers get more than they bargained for?

The new Batman movie is a violent orgy of violence. Albeit, staged violence to look violently real. What is our culture’s fascination with violence? Is there really a difference to our psyches between what we see in the movie theater and what our ancient Roman cousins saw in the arena? Why would a parent take their 6-year-old child to see this movie? Is the young man, who’s name does not merit mentioning, a product of our own making? ■

Proposed 28th Amendment isn’t all that true

id you know that half of all emails are true? Well, last month I chose to be victimized by the “untrue half.”

Unfortunately, I took you with me.

As I approached last month’s deadline, I had yet to write my column and had just received an email from a “trusted” source regarding the proposed 28th Amendment. Parts of it seemed vaguely familiar. The best misinformation usually does have a “ring of truth” to it. Usually, at the BEACON we would fact check this information, but seeing as how it came from a “trusted” source, I am the “all knowing” publisher and I was behind schedule, I made a poor choice to publish it.

The good news is that the BEACON has smart readers that provided

spirited rebukes to my gaffe. My favorite response came from Dickie D. who wrote, “What I would give for a gallon of dumbass vaccine to distribute among Tea Party and other Republicans.” He then went on to point out the fallacies behind the “28th Amendment” proposal. While I do thank Dickie for writing, I should point out that “dumb” knows no party lines.

The best response was from Bill C. who simply said, “This falsehood has been making the rounds for years. It doesn’t help that you perpetuate it.”

If I had checked with www.fact check.org or www.snopes.com, I could have discovered the misinformation I was about to perpetuate.

Let this be a lesson learned, that we as individuals are each responsible for what we choose to believe and what we choose to communicate. ■

E What about llamas?

By Barbara Ward Llamas and alpacas are similar, but quite different. Llamas are roughly twice the size of alpacas and they make good guardians for alpacas and livestock. They were primarily bred to carry luggage over mountainous terrain, but are still used for their fiber. But because of their coarse outer coat, they do not produce as much quality fiber.

Lodging and llamas Ray and Gail Record own Cedars Edge Llamas Bed and Breakfast, located in Cedaredge. In the late 1980s, the Records decided to breed llamas and sell them on a small acreage. Because so many people would stop to see the llamas, they decided to open a bed and breakfast in 1990 as well.

“Llamas are very healthy and easy to raise,” Record said. “They are extremely intelligent animals, always observing their surroundings.”

Like alpacas, llamas are very gentle.

They have a life span of 20-30 years.

Record, who can be seen riding around his property on a Segway, uses the llamas to educate people about why he rides a Segway and multiple sclerosis.

“I decided to do the best I can with what I have, making sure I get the most out of any abilities I have,” Record said.

A llama’s kiss Llamas are very curious animals and a kiss is a way they greet another llama—or human, if you’re lucky. This supportive community of alpaca ranchers meets once a month, featuring educational classes and speakers and pooling resources to save on expenses. There are currently 15 area members. The knowledge the ranchers gain from their classes and from each other, they readily share with prospective buyers.

“The purpose in selling our alpacas is to help mentor others to get started,” McDermott said. “If they’re successful, we’re successful. We can process their fiber at our mill.”

McKinley echoed this sentiment.

“We meet with and train potential buyers, which makes them more likely to buy and be successful,” McKinley said.

Alpacas require an investment and the knowledge about the costs, commitment, challenges and joys of raising them. Not long after getting his alpacas, McKinley lost one to a bear who wandered into Grand Junction. McDermott had a prize alpaca sold and three days before the new owners were to pick it up, it unexpectedly died, costing him approximately $50,000. To protect their alpacas from predators such as coyotes, McDermott invested in two Italian bred livestock guardian dogs called Maremmas.

Although you are not going to find two more hard working alpaca ranchers than McKinley and McDermott, it cannot be said that either manages to do it on their own. Helen McKinley, 65, and Tequilla

Cindy McDermott, 50, work in tandem with their husbands, despite the fact that they both have full-time jobs. They are also selfprofessed “city girls” who never dreamed they would someday be alpaca ranchers.

Helen gives the alpacas their shots and is an active felter of alpaca fiber. She even found herself housing and nursing a newborn alpaca in their shower for four months as it recovered from a broken leg.

Cindy is involved in all aspects of the business, including taking her turn at bottle-feeding fragile newborns.

“Alpacas act more like pets than livestock,” Helen said. “They all have names. It’s heartbreaking when you lose one.”

When asked how they find time to take a break for vacations, both couples smiled and looked at each other as if to say, “What’s a vacation?”

McDermott uses their “vacations” to go to alpaca trade shows.

“Our passion for other people supersedes the passion for vacations,” McDermott said.

The McDermotts’ 25th wedding anniversary is coming up next summer and they dream of going to Peru to visit alpaca farms.

They recently connected with a family from Peru who stopped at their Downtown Farmers Market booth and offered their home during the McDermott’s prospective trip.

Whisk together marinade.

Grill until chicken is cooked through, about 3 to 5 minutes on each side.

Crust: 1 T granulated sugar 2 T unsalted butter, softened 2 c sweetened flake coconut Grated zest of half a lime Filling: 3 (8-oz) packages reduced fat cream cheese, softened 3 large eggs 1 (14-oz) can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 1/2 t vanilla extract 2 T cornstarch 3 T lime juice 1 c Smucker’s® Mango Jam Pie Crust: Heat oven to 350°F. Toss together coconut, sugar and lime zest in a medium mixing bowl. Add butter and stir until crumbly. Press mixture into bottom and up sides of a 9-in. non-stick spring form pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Allow to cool completely.

Filling: Reduce oven temperature to 300°F. Beat cream cheese until smooth with an electric mixer on medium speed in a large mixing bowl. Gradually beat in sweetened condensed milk, until smooth. Add eggs, lime juice, vanilla extract and cornstarch, mixing.

POUR cream cheese mixture into prepared crust. Stir in jam until smooth, drop dollops of jam on top of filling. Gently swirl jam with a knife until top of filling appears marbleized.

BAKE for 55 to 60 minutes, or until center is set when jiggled. Cool completely.

Cover and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight.

Dear Old Bag: I am afraid I have made a terrible mistake. I married this man eight months ago.

He seemed a lot like my first husband who died five years ago. We went together for six months, and since both our spouses were gone, it seemed like the right thing to get married. In the first week, I think I knew I had made a mistake. He is nothing like my first husband. He is not unkind, but he talks all the time and thinks he knows everything. I did not see that in the time we went together...well, maybe I saw a little of it, but thought I could overlook it. He sold his house and moved in with me since I had the larger home. What do I do now? I hate to kick him out, but I will go crazy if I have to listen to him day in and day out. Help! Signed, Desperate Dear Desperate: Your problem is more common than you would believe. I say, cut your losses and end it. It will only develop into misery for both of you. Here is advice for you and for others contemplating a second marriage: 1. If the person has annoying habits before marriage (while they are on their good behavior), you can be sure the habits will escalate when the honeymoon is over.

2. Many people look for someone like their previous mate. This is a mistake. You are setting yourself up for disappointment. Every time they do something out-of-character for your previous spouse, you will be annoyed and disappointed.

3. Don’t be in a hurry to marry. Enjoy each other’s company.

4. Be picky. Don’t marry because you are lonely. Loneliness is awful, but a bad marriage is worse.

5. If you have misgivings, it might be your conscience telling you to wait.

6. After all that, remember that there are no perfect people. Acceptance is the better part of loving.

Dear Old Bag: We have people who “drop-in” on us and it irritates me to the point that I find it hard to be nice to them. How can I put a stop to this without losing their friendship? Why is it that some people have no manners? Signed, Irritated Dear Irritated: My first thought was, “How lucky you are to have friends who care enough to drop in.”

I am always wishing people would drop in, as they did when I was a child. We had a constant string of “drop-ins,” and I thought it was wonderful. My mom said, “Drop-ins are good. They do not expect your house to be spotless, because they are dropins.” However, I realize the proper thing to do nowadays is to call ahead.

So you have to be creative if you do not want them. I suggest you answer the door with your purse and keys in hand and say, “I’m so sorry, we were just leaving. Give me a call and we will get together soon.” Or greet them with, “I am so sorry, I am coming down with the flu and don’t feel well. I will give you a call when I feel better and we will set a time to get together.” Or just hide. I am sure you can come up with others. Good luck.

Dear Old Bag: I think that angry guy that wrote about the man who had given shelter to a homeless man has lost sight of compassion, kindness, generosity and the Golden Rule. Maybe someday he will be homeless and desperate.

Will someone be there for him?

A story about Skye

By Pat McCain Cerise Farther up the path, Skye saw a brightly colored arch. His tummy had stopped hurting and he sat down to groom his soft, white fur.

Skye thought of his mom. He hoped she knew that he loved her. They had a good life, but he didn’t like how Mom started helping cats that didn’t have homes. Mom still loved him more.

When he got sick, they went to see the vet. She was nice, but couldn’t help him feel better. Mom didn’t want him to go away, but he wasn’t getting better.

Mom cried. The next thing he knew, he was walking up the path. He knew that Mom would come one of these days. Until then, he’d hang around in the sun.

The Healthy Geezer

Q. I’m a 65-year-old man dating a 58-year-old woman. Recently, my grandson, who is rather outspoken, asked me if I was protecting myself against AIDS. At the time, I thought the question was ridiculous, but now I’m wondering if I should be more concerned about getting AIDS. A growing number of older people have HIV/AIDS. About one in five people with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are now over age 50. New AIDS cases have risen faster in the over 50 population than in people under 40.

According to a British study, people over 50 with HIV are more likely to be diagnosed with the late-stage disease than younger adults. They are also more than twice as likely to die within a year of their HIV test.

Since the early 1980s, HIV in people over 50 accounted for about 10 percent of all cases. However, the method of transmission has changed.

Blood transfusion was once the major transmission mode. Now heterosexual contact and IV drug use are the main causes of HIV infection in seniors.

Heterosexual transmission in men over 50 is up more than 90 percent, and more than 100 percent in women since 1991. But there may even be more cases because doctors do not always test older people for HIV/AIDS during routine exams, and older people often mistake signs of HIV/ AIDS for the aches of normal aging.

The number of HIV/AIDS cases among older people is growing every year because older Americans know less about HIV/AIDS than younger people. Health care professionals often do not talk with older people about prevention, and older people are less likely than younger people to talk about their sex lives or drug use with their doctors.

HIV is a virus that damages the immune system, making you vulnerable to diseases, infections and cancers.

When that happens, you have AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the last stage of HIV. HIV symptoms include headache, cough, diarrhea, swollen glands, lack of energy, loss of appetite and weight loss, fevers, sweats, repeated yeast infections, skin rashes, pelvic and abdominal cramps, sores and shortterm memory loss.

Your health care provider can test your blood for HIV/AIDS. You can also test your blood at home with the “Home Access Express HIV-1 Test System,” which you can buy at most drug stores. It is the only HIV home test system approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Anyone can get HIV and AIDS. HIV usually comes from having unprotected sex, sharing needles with an infected person, or through contact with HIV-infected blood. You can not get HIV from casual contact, such as shaking hands; using a public telephone, drinking fountain, restroom, swimming pool, hot tub; sharing a drink; being coughed or sneezed on by a person with HIV/AIDS; giving blood, and a mosquito bite.

You may be at risk if you do not use condoms or do not know your partner’s drug and sexual history. You may also be at risk if you have had a blood transfusion or operation in a developing country, or if you have had a blood transfusion in the U.S. between 1978 and 1985.

There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but if you become infected, there are drugs that help keep the HIV virus in check and slow the spread of HIV in the body. Doctors are now using a combination of drugs called HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) to treat HIV/AIDS. Although it is not a cure, HAART is greatly reducing the number of deaths from AIDS in the U.S. ■

ccording to Reiki, a Japanese healing energy practice, following these five principles is the way to invite happiness, the best medicine for treating stress and disease.

Our mind, body and spirit all work together to create in us a sense of well-being, happiness, and the state of good health…or not. We have all felt negative energy and know that it can sap our strength and cause illness. The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a combination of “rei,” or universal power, and “ki,” life force. Reiki generally uses the laying on of hands to transfer positive energy for stress relief and healing in people.

Two California women with upperlevel Reiki training have found they can also send positive healing energy over long distances. They do this to treat pets and their owners all over the world without having to see or touch them in person.

Candy Boroditsky, 66, and Ming Chee-Brown, 48, are the partners and pet healers of Reiki Fur Babies. This unique service provides Reiki healing for pets and their people caretakers.

They ask for a photo of the pet and a description of its problem. Then they get together and concentrate exclusively on helping one pet at a time.

“People’s pets are their family,” Chee-Brown said. “When pets are in distress, so are their people parents.

We are here to help them all heal.”

Chee-Brown visualizes the site and cause of a pet’s problem. She can pinpoint where to send the most energy, but she said, “We send energy to every cell in the pet’s body.”

Boroditsky talks and listens to pets that need help.

“Our pets are here to teach us,” Boroditsky said. “I’m a conduit to the communication that a pet and owner crave and need. Anyone can learn to

tune in to their pet’s desire and need to communicate with their owner, the one they love most in the world.”

Both women are animal lovers and former health care practitioners.

They came to Reiki healing through Chee-Brown’s physician brother. Their first pet patient was CheeBrown’s own dog, who suffered from canine hip dysplasia and was cured through Reiki.

Linnie Krauland, 50, is a Reiki master who lives in Grand Junction and owns Lotus Light Healing.

“I have been fighting a rare form of breast cancer for three years,” Krauland said. “Reiki has helped me survive chemo, a mastectomy, and the knowledge that there is no cure for my disease.”

She performs Reiki on clients and teaches classes. She also has several pets that have been helped by Reiki Fur Babies sessions.

Krauland recently brought Boroditsky and Chee-Brown to Grand Junction for a book signing event at the Art Center. Participants were treated to an interactive Q&A session and given an autographed copy of “Reiki Fur Babies,” a quick-read book whose pet owner testimonials of pet healing successes will move you to tears and laughter.

“People want to do anything to help their pets be happy and healthy,” Boroditsky said. “All you need for Reiki to work is to have a sliver of hope. Hope is the opening to all possibilities.”

Pets bring health and joy

liché though it may be, dogs are mankind’s best friends, but they’re good for more than fetching slippers and getting rid of veggies the grandkids don’t want to eat. Dogs and other animals help children recover from abuse and illness, “friend” those with mental illnesses, assist military veterans who struggle with the mental and physical wounds of war, and provide comfort to hospital patients and nursing home residents.

Cats, horses, guinea pigs, hamsters and even fish have had a beneficial

effect on those who suffer from physical or mental infirmity. Studies have shown that petting an animal lowers blood pressure and that pet owners live longer than those without pets. Interacting with animals reduces stress and can even become a form of meditation.

Larissa Rignall and her husband, Rick, know the benefits of animal therapy. They started using their mini Appaloosa horses for visits about 10 years ago.

Shashonie, who stands just 29-3/4 inches tall at the shoulder, brings laughter and delight to the clients at Hilltop’s Senior Daybreak, an adult day care program that provides a safe and stimulating environment for those dealing with memory loss and confusion.

“He’s very striking looking,” Larissa said of her black leopard Appaloosa stallion, “and he’s very comfortable being around people.”

Last year, he even attended Senior Daybreak’s Christmas party.

Shashonie makes himself at home, whether in an elevator traveling to visit a guest, wandering into a patient’s room, or posing for pictures near the Christmas tree. One resident at The Commons at Hilltop, an assisted and independent living community, was floored when Shashonie showed up.

“I haven’t seen a horse since I grew up on the farm and here’s one standing in my living room,” he said.

Larissa said that they don’t have to worry about their horses having accidents.

“I don’t put a bag on Shashonie and I’ve never had to clean up a mess,” she said. “Dogs may piddle to mark their territory or because they’re nervous, but stallions only mark in their stalls.”

The Rignalls sometimes take their dog around to facilities like Senior Daybreak, but the horses are the main attraction.

“We called around and told folks what we wanted to do,” Larissa said.

“Our first visits took place outside, but pretty soon we were invited in.”

Director of Senior Daybreak Laurie Frasier loves to see animals stop by.

“These visits are definitely helpful to those with dementia,” Frasier said.

“As soon as Shashonie walks in the room, there’s a special spark between him and our participants. Animals help them reconnect with childhood, tapping into old social tapes, triggering reminiscences that bring back moments of joy. You can’t go wrong with animals and kids.”

The Rignalls also welcome visitors to their 3R Ranch at 1024 24 Road in Grand Junction, where they have 10 mini horses.

“We had a busload of special needs clients from the Regional Center arrive one day to see our herd,” Larissa said. “They loved petting the horses.”

The Rignalls sometimes host barbecues and invite guests to use golf carts to visit the herd and pet the horses. Children from hospice come out to ride and groom the horses. In August or early September, they plan to offer horse cart rides at Senior Daybreak.

There is no charge for visits, either to the farm or for them taking Shashonie and friends to a venue.

“We like to entertain and educate people about therapy horses,” Larissa said.

Besides offering therapy visits, Larissa is a professional pet sitter.

Just the flax, Ma’am

ince man stood upright, tiny but mighty flaxseeds, their fibrous mojo, and health-sustaining oil have been a cultural keystone. Claude Debussy even wrote a lovely melody comparing a women’s beautiful flaxen hair to the shiny brown seed.

The omega-3 essential fatty acid (EFA) oil and cleansing dietary fiber were indispensable for upholding health and a happy colon. Friends often come for dinner and once I received a thank you courtesy call: “Wendell, dinner was awesome, but I’m pretty sure some things came out of me today I ate when I was six.”

I enlightened him that the flaxseed I sprinkled on everything was Roto Rootering his backed-up colon.

Both plant and seed have been used for centuries to weave fibers for clothing and housing. Ancient Egyptians carried flaxseed in their medical bags. During the eighth century, King Charlemagne passed laws requiring the consumption of flaxseed. Linen made from flaxseeds composed Christ’s swaddling infant clothes. However, there’s considerably more going on within the ancient gift from the generous universe.

EFA omega-3 deficiency is associated with chronic diarrhea, Crohn’s or IBS, ADD, irritability or nervousness, dry mouth, throat, skin that dries or cracks behind the ears, emphysema, asthma, chronic lung disease, chronic joint pain or arthritis, kidney, bladder or prostate problems and infertility, impotence or a history of repeated miscarriages.

Fibrous flaxseed contains significant amounts of omega-3 and naturally occurring plant estrogens called lignans, which prevent bone loss, reduced risk of colon cancer and estrogen-related breast cancer and diminished symptoms of menopause.

Omega-3 balances production of prostaglandins, which help regulate blood pressure, blood clotting, nerve transmission, and allergic responses, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract functions, and the production of

hormones. This miracle of nature helps prevent heart disease, improves mental function, and cools inflammation related to asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headaches and osteoporosis. Inflammation, by the way, accelerates aging and causes about 70 percent of today’s diseases, whereas omega-3 soothes inflammation, decreasing disease risk. Smell what I’m cookin’?

Americans eat way too much omega-6 and too little omega-3. A diet high in omega-6 causes internal inflammation, especially if the diet lacks magnesium and B vitamins.

These fats are used in many bodily functions, but less is more.

The greatest source of the overabundance of omega-6 fats in the American diet is America’s lust for fast, convenient, and processed foods. Commercial fried foods, even if they’re low in trans-fat, are still likely to contain lofty levels of omega-6. Nearly the entire extreme intake of omega-6 fatty acid in American diets comes from popular cooking oils like sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, walnut and soybean oil, which are all high in omega-6 fatty acid. I repeat: less is more.

Omega-3 naturally occurs in coldwater fish, walnuts and green leafy vegetables. DHA, brain food, also comes from fish oil, salmon, herring, anchovies, sardines, chicken and eggs. Your best formula for success is to ingest two tablespoons of ground flaxseeds with 2,000 IUs of fish oil daily, in addition to a handful of plain walnuts. Try flaxseed over your morning fruit and cereal.

Refrigerate ground flaxseed in a tightly sealed container and then grind a small handful before serving.

Two tablespoons a day is sufficient.

Once ground, the seeds quickly lose their mojo. Process and store unground seeds in the refrigerator.

I put it on everything. The mere gravity of getting out of your morning bed will arouse a truly moving experience even before the chilly white seat has a chance to warm up.

The notion that her pigs could be used to benefit people came as a serendipitous surprise. She met a person with an autistic child, who had always been nonverbal and could not be around dogs or large animals. Robbins-Bartels agreed to allow the family to take the child to see the pigs twice a month. For three months, the child touched, petted, and walked around the pigs. One day, she received a call from the mother. She heard some screaming in the background and the mother of the child was in tears. She said she heard something that sounded like, “Og, og, og.”

“Do you hear what he’s saying?” the mother asked. “He’s speaking. He wants to see the hogs.”

That was when it occurred to Robbins-Bartels, that her pigs could help people. She now gets visitors and staff from Able, an adult day care center; Mesa Developmental Services; and Hilltop.

Pig-A-Sus is getting to be known around the country as well. The University of Salt Lake called Robbins-Bartels, hoping she would take two research pigs. These pigs had lived their entire lives in a cage and had never touched the ground. She was delighted in watching them explore their new home. Little by little, they made their way around their new pen and have now fully integrated themselves in their new home.

He sees a couple in a car, with the interior light brightly shining. He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. He sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine and a young woman in the rear seat filing her fingernails.

The officer walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s side window.

The young man lowers his window and asks, “Yes, officer?”

“What are you doing?” the officer asked.

“Well, officer,” he pauses. “I’m reading a magazine.”

Pointing to the young woman in the back seat, the officer asks, “And her. What is she doing?”

The cat who taught me chutzpah

can still picture the morning I was sitting with a dozen mewing kittens at the local animal shelter. There was a slight movement between two pillows on the far side of the cage. That’s where I found Eddie, on his back trying to get some sleep.

He was a plain gray tabby, as common as a housefly. “He’s the one,” I said to my husband, Bob. “He’s so ratty,” Bob said, picking him up, “and he only has one whisker.”

Eddie tenderly pressed his face against mine. Then he put his sharp baby teeth around my gold earring and yanked with the strength of a sumo wrestler.

Eddie had chutzpah and he knew how to use it.

That first night home, he was restless. I calmed him with a song from

the musical, “Oliver!” I sang it softly, as a slow ballad, “Food, glorious food, hot sausage and mustard.” He closed his eyes and purred. From then on, that song always soothed him.

Eddie got up before we did.

I knew that from the sound of breaking glass.

We found him on the mantel where my favorite glass plate used to be. The floor was covered with glass shards.

At first I felt bad. But that didn’t last.

Things are just things. Our pets are family.

While we were sleeping, Eddie bit our earlobes, toes and fingers. He preferred protruding parts. Imagine what poor Bob endured.

When we’d watch TV in bed, he’d scratch us for attention. Eventually I learned that there are times when family, friends or pets are more important than TV. When are those times?

Always.

Eddie opened cabinets by putting his paws around the knobs. Vitamin

bottles made great rattling noises upon crash landings. We bought childproof magnets at the hardware store.

Eddie simply tugged a little harder.

Back to the hardware store for hook and eye locks. Eddie flipped the hooks open with one paw. Back to the hardware store for deadbolt locks. He easily slid those bolts to the side. The guy at the hardware store already had combo locks on the counter.

Eddie came into my life when, because of an illness, I needed to learn a lot from him. And I did.

To Eddie, obstacles were challenges.

When barriers thwarted him, he never quit trying. Words like “can’t” and “hopeless” were only beliefs. Beliefs can be changed.

For the past two years, Eddie has been sick. I spent lots of time massaging him on either side of his face. One afternoon, I used my fingers to comb through the lovely full set of whiskers he had eventually grown. That was the day when I saw the one side effect from the medicine he was taking. As I gently rubbed along his face, all of his whiskers came off in my hands,

except for one. I placed them in a tiny needlepoint purse my mother made for me.

He came into our lives with one whisker and that is how he would leave.

Three months ago, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, I kissed his forehead and whispered, “I love you.” He looked up at me. His face showed the love he was never successful at hiding.

As Bob softly sang, “Food, glorious food, hot sausage and mustard,” Eddie took his last breath.

While his body was still warm, I cradled him in my arms and rocked him. I held his head so he was nestled against my neck. “Eddie, you will always be a part of me.” I didn’t want to let him go from my arms. But Bob, so lovingly and slowly, gently took him away.

And so, I honor the life of my wonderful cat who, from the beginning, stood apart from all the others.

My beautiful cat, my Eddie, just a plain gray tabby, as common as a housefly. ■

Mid-week, the fellows might have taken advantage of a breezy day to launch a rocket or fly a kite. Mostly, however, dads worked long hours and boys depended on friends for good fun and possibly a little mischief. Of course, mothers and daughters had equally good fun by sewing cloth dolls, planning tea parties, or planting flowers.

Organized sports and rooting for favorite high school or college teams were also important. Since 1959, young and old alike have looked forward to the days of JUCO baseball played annually at Suplizio Field. Over 4,700 fans attended the first year and the numbers have consistently grown.

Faithful fans count on their favorite players and teams, possibly San Jacinto, Middle Georgia, or Grayson, and eagerly anticipate each point earned.

As Colorado Mesa University’s website states, western Colorado offers many outdoor recreational activities, which range from mountain biking to whitewater rafting to alpine skiing and much more. With mountains on one side and high desert canyons on the other, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure through activities such as ice climbing, kayaking, mountaineering and rock climbing.

Western Colorado has been and will continue to be a family-oriented area with a variety of recreational opportunities and fun for kids of all ages. So whether your grandkids take advantage of one of the local Grand

Preserving water keeps prices low The Garden Guru

he only thing that saves western Colorado from a continuous drought is the river that runs through our valley and the series of canals that deliver water to the valley and mesas. But when snow and mountain rains are sparse, the amount of water that flows through our valley is often limited.

Even with a drought like we are experiencing this year, many people were not concerned. They saw canals flowing to the brim and used that as an excuse to use as much if not more water than they otherwise would. Water providers reported an increase of up to 20 percent in water use than previous years. The sight of full canals is not a good indicator of drought, as they need to be kept full to ensure that users at the end of the ditch receive the water they are allotted for their crops and livestock.

Checking out the local rivers, streams and lakes would have given people a real sense of the extent of the drought.

As one of the Mesa County Commissioner candidates recently stated, “Water is life.” I wonder how many people realize that the way we use water in our small part of the world has a direct effect on our lives and on the lives of those downstream. Many of us depend a great deal on the farmers downstream, including those in California who use Colorado River water.

In 2010, 49 percent of the fresh vegetables and 71 percent of the frozen and canned vegetables you purchased in local super markets came from California. Even some of the feed for your livestock comes from downstream farmers. If your feed supplies come from local sources,

the cost is not astronomical because large quantities of these crops are being produced in other parts of the country. The cost of what you purchase is directly related to how much is available.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor as of mid-July, 38 percent of the nation’s corn crop was in poor to very poor condition, while 54 percent of the nation’s pastures and rangelands were reported to be in poor to very poor condition. These drought conditions were at an alltime high between 1995 and 2012.

This drought is certainly going to affect the cost of beef, pork, bread, milk, and other products we consume.

The excessive use of water in our valleys will also affect the cost of these products.

A former Bureau of Reclamation staff member once told me the excess use of water in our area has little to do with the amount of water that flows down the Colorado River to other users. He is correct, as this water eventually flows back into the Colorado, but the quality of the water is degraded. Excess water used to water plants picks up salt as it travels through the soil. When this salt-laden water flows back into the river, the overall salt level of the river increases. When salty water is excessively applied to a crop, a leaching fraction must be applied to counter the deposition of salts in the root zone of that crop.

When water is limited, the application of this leaching fraction may not be possible, and crops and yields suffer. Crops have specific salt tolerances and even a small increase in salt can have a significant impact on the yield of the crop. There is also a limit, above which cattle and other animals will not drink. Even humans don’t like to drink salty water. ■

How to catch a ‘Phish’

We always advocate that families enter into a prearranged funeral contract so that they are protected in the event of an unexpected death or serious illness. Another reason for families to prearrange is so the surviving spouse or children know that there are funds set aside to pay for the funeral expenses of their loved one. Experiencing the death of loved one is never easy, nor is paying for funeral arrangements.

How many of you are aware of the primary reason families should prearrange? By prearranging, you lock in the prices in effect as of the date the contract is signed.

When you enter into a prearranged funeral contract, the prices of the services and merchandise included in your contract are frozen. Upon your passing, your family will not pay a penny more for guaranteed services or merchandise, such as your casket, outer burial container, urn or any other items included in your prearranged contract. If the merchandise you selected is no longer available, your family will be presented with options of equal or better value.

As an example, if you purchased a prearranged burial policy in 1999 that included the funeral home’s basic professional fee, transport to the funeral home, embalming, dressing, a funeral service, service book, service folders, visitation, funeral service, transportation to the cemetery and a casket for the sum of $4,000 (which was the average cost of a funeral in 1999), your family would not be required to pay any additional monies for these items at the time of need. All your family would be required to pay for would be those items not already covered by your preneed contract, which are usually items from other sources such as

charges, etc. Needless to say, today prices are higher and they will probably continue to increase in years to come.

heir names may sound funny, but their financial consequences are not: “Phishing,� “smishing,� “vishing� and “pharming� are just a few of the ways criminals gain access to personal information via your computer or smartphone. If you’re not careful, identity thieves can use harvested information to open fraudulent bank or credit card accounts, take out loans, rent apartments or even charge medical procedures to your insurance plan.

Unfortunately, every time the authorities plug one hole, crafty criminals figure out new ways to trick unsuspecting victims. Here are some identity theft scams to watch out for: Phishing: This is where you receive an email, purportedly from a trusted source like a government agency, bank or retailer that asks you to supply or confirm account information, log-in IDs or passwords. These imposters are “fishing� for your personal information. Legitimate organizations never ask you to verify sensitive information through a nonsecure means like email.

Smishing (for “Short Message Service�): Like phishing, only it uses text messages sent to your cellphone.

Even if you don’t share any information, just by responding you’re verifying that your phone number is valid, which means it probably will be sold to others who will try to trick you into their own scams.

Vishing (voice phishing): Where live or automated callers direct you to call your bank or credit card issuer under the pretext of clearing up a problem (like theft or overdrawn accounts). You’ll be asked to share personal or account information. Keep a list of toll-free service numbers for all companies you use so you can call them directly without fearing you’ve been given bogus information. I also program these numbers, but not account numbers, into my cell phone in case I’m traveling.

Pharming: Where hackers redirect you from a legitimate website to an

impostor site where your personal information is harvested (“farmed�).

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter increasingly are being targeted, so always be wary of opening any links, even from trusted friends, because their account may have been hacked.

A few tips for spotting risky emails and texts: • Although the “Fromâ€? line may appear to be from a valid company email address, that’s easy for fraudsters to mimic (called “spoofingâ€?). • Beware of subject lines and body copy that use ominous or threatening language (e.g., “Your credit card has been suspendedâ€?). • Lack of a personalized salutation or closing details (e.g., “Dear Valued Customerâ€?). • Watch for typos, poor grammar, punctuation, capitalization consistency and other warning signs it’s not legitimate. • Scroll your mouse over any embedded links before clicking to check for suspicious domain endings like “.be.â€? • Verify that an alert or request for information is legitimate by looking up the company’s phone number and calling it yourself. • Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is current.

ur dog, Beans, does not have a medical degree.

Few, if any dogs, do. But when Beans spots an injury that needs treatment, he is ready to assist. He needs no doctor’s white coat or stethoscope, or even a tongue depressor.

Let me explain. A few days ago, we had a visit from my wife’s long-time friend and her husband. My wife, Nancy, had not seen Sylvia for 30 years. So talk of long-past occasions and acquaintances flowed. None of this interested Beans much, although he was friendly and listened politely. After we consumed a delicious luncheon of pasta primavera and Beans had his usual kibble, we moved to the family room.

Sylvia, a registered nurse, was seated on the couch with her legs crossed. On her bare shin was a red spot and small scab where she had had a basal cell carcinoma removed.

Beans saw Sylvia’s small red spot and knew that she had been injured somehow. He sensed that Sylvia needed treatment. So he sat in front of Sylvia and proceeded to apply medication the only way he knows how. Specifically, Beans began licking the small red spot, and licking it, and licking it.

Conversation stalled and turned to Beans’ pharmaceutical treatment with his tongue.

At first, this procedure was accepted as cute, even caring. But after it had persisted for several minutes, we dragged Beans away from his medical duties, explaining that his licks were appreciated, but were sufficient.

This same health care inclination occurred last year when some other old friends were in town and stopped by. The man, Arne, was in shorts and the place where he had skinned his knee was obvious, especially to Beans. So Beans applied his medical

expertise by repeatedly licking the skinned knee of Arne until Beans was persuaded that the skin would now heal.

This pronounced interest in health care undoubtedly must have come from the torrent of news about President Obama’s health care overhaul.

Beans apparently is aware there is a serious need for health care, especially among older people. But he obviously suspects such care need not involve billions in public expenditures and thousands of bureaucrats to conduct it. A properly applied dog tongue can perform wonders.

A nurse must wear a watch in order to take a patient’s pulse. Beans does not wear a watch. But you will never convince me that dogs can’t tell time.

Beans seems to have a clock in his head. Not only does he always show up in the kitchen close to noontime for lunch, he also arrives ready to eat dinner at about 5:30 p.m. daily.

In addition to his medical practice, Beans learned a new trick that is more in keeping with canine behavior. After lunch and dinner, Beans looks up at me expectantly waiting for his after meal treat. So I reach into the bowl of small milk-bones,

extract one and break it in half.

I then tell Beans to sit, which he does. I say, “Ready.” Then I toss the portion of the treat in the air. When it falls, Beans catches it in his mouth and looks up expectantly for the other half. Then, the catch is repeated and mealtime is officially concluded.

Even more important, there is a ritual called “walking with the women.” My wife, our friend and neighbor, Delphine, who lives across our street, and Linda, who lives a couple of blocks up the street normally walk daily two miles around the neighborhood. Beans always tags along. This is his opportunity not only to relieve himself but also to listen to the women chat and laugh.

As I said, Beans has no watch, but when he hears the phone ring and hears our phone announce that it is Delphine calling, Beans rushes around ready to go. He knows it’s time for “walking with the women.”

Beans is not perfect, although our love for him knows no bounds. He is a Beagle and can be annoying when he smells or sees deer in our woods and barks continuously until they stroll away. Now and then, we allow him to chase them away. He routinely barks whenever the man comes to spray the outside of our house for insects or the man who fertilizes our lawn arrives.

In fact, anything strange or different sets Beans off. When Nancy hung a Halloween ghost banner on the railing of our breezeway, as soon as Beans spotted it waving in the breeze, he was certain this was some dangerous creature that was about to invade our home. It took a couple of days of barking and menacing growling to adjust.

One final expectation to relate: After church, Nancy and I consistently pick up and bring home with us a couple of egg McMuffins. Quite naturally, Beans expects us to share a couple of bites with him, which we do. To Beans’ thinking, it’s the Christian thing to do. ■

Local church gives school supplies to students in need. Can you help?

hree years ago, Tammy Beagley, a stay at home mom, and Carol Huslig, a local elementary school teacher, realized how difficult it could be for struggling families to take care of their basic needs. With the economy and job market affecting so many people with school age children, they came up with an idea that would benefit not only local parents, but children as well.

When they presented the idea for a school supply and grocery giveaway to Bethel Assembly of God Church, the members responded with donations, time and enthusiasm.

With help from other church members, Beagley and Huslig collected enough school supplies to provide to over 150 school age kids, from kindergarten through college. They made copies of the school supply lists from all of the local schools and each student received a bag of supplies for their school and grade, along with a bag of groceries consisting of a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jam, a box of macaroni and cheese and a loaf of bread.

Youth from the church went through local neighborhoods with flyers, inviting parents and children to come and receive their school supplies, along with free hotdogs and soda.

Church member Elsie Bell sewed 150 school bags in assorted colors and patterns for students to choose from to carry their supplies. Volunteers filled shopping bags with groceries and organized supplies. They also guided the students through the lines, helping them pick out the items they needed. The turnout was more than anyone expected that first year.

Last year, 200 students benefited from the event. Donations came from businesses and individuals, not only in the form of school supplies, but also cash, which was used to purchase supplies that were lacking.

This year, the group plans to provide for at least 500 students. The giveaway will take place from 9 a.m. to noon (or until supplies run out) on August 11, at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 2945 Orchard Ave. in Grand Junction.

The giveaway is an opportunity for those who can, to help those in need.

Central Library moving To make way for construction work, the Mesa County Libraries Central Library in downtown Grand Junction will move to a temporary location in the former Ashley Furniture building at First Street and Gunnison Avenue.

The Central Library will close after Friday, August 3, in order to complete the move of all materials. The temporary location at First and Gunnison is expected to open to the public the week of August 13. As part of the Central Library Expansion and Improvement Project, the current building will be renovated and 9,000 square feet will be added. After the Central Library Project is finished in spring 2013, the library will move back to 530 Grand Ave. Patrons can place holds on items and have them sent to other branches if they prefer.

Traveler transportation

Health equipment available

The Traveler’s mission is to link seniors and disabled adults with independent lifestyles through mobility.

The Traveler provides wheelchair accessible, door-to-door, demand responsive, driver-assisted transportation to Garfield County residents, age 60 or older, or disabled, who have difficulty using public or private transportation because it is unavailable, inaccessible or unaffordable.

To schedule a ride on the Traveler, call at least 24 hours in advance.

Suggested client donation is $2 per ride in town, $3 between towns, and $20 for a round trip to Grand Junction (offered on the second Thursday of the month). Schedule trips from Parachute to Glenwood Springs and towns in between every Thursday for doctor visits, shopping or visiting.

Call 625-1366 to schedule your ride 48 hours in advance. Suggested donation is $8 for the round trip. Please schedule doctor appointments 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Residents in Parachute and Battlement Mesa have a free source of health equipment at the Valley Senior Center, 540 N. Parachute Ave. Donated equipment may be borrowed with just a refundable $10 deposit.

To arrange a visit to look over the large supply of wheel chairs, walkers, crutches, toilet risers, shower stools, helper bars and more, call Dick at 285-9526. It is important to consult with doctors or therapists in advance. The senior center needs to replace equipment as it wears out, so donations from the public are appreciated. Wheel chairs and fourwheeled walkers with seats are in great demand. Recipients appreciate the convenience and savings made possible by thoughtful donors.

Matter of Balance classes A Matter of Balance is an award-winning, eight-week program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. The class is free and you will learn to reduce fall risks at home, exercise to increase strength balance, and set goals for increasing activity.

Be courteous when you curse

C

ursing is controversial. Some believe that people who utter four-letter words are immoral, others call them crude, and still others view those who have a foul mouth as uncivilized and annoying. The town of Middleborough, Massachusetts was fed up with the spate of teen cursing on downtown streets and passed an ordinance that fines public cursers $20 for each “bad word” they say in public.

On the opposite end of the cursing controversy, linguistic libertarians believe words are neither bad nor good.

They believe free speech, including the right to verbalize rudeness, is guaranteed in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and that the only bad words are the ones that threaten to cause physical harm to listeners (yelling bomb on board an airplane, for example).

No matter where you stand on swearing, communication specialists recommend that sensitivity to others is the key factor to consider if you have the urge to say anything stronger than “darn” or “shucks.” Here are three things to consider before you curse in public: 1. Know who’s listening to you.

Cursing serves as a verbal expression of anger, frustration, or disappointment, but your issues are not everyone’s business. Particularly, if you’re on the phone with a friend or a client, think before you use an expletive. The salesperson who instinctively blurts out the “s-word” when she breaks a fingernail during a call with a prospective customer can cost herself more than the price of a manicure.

2. Err on the conservative side at work. All things considered, even

if everyone’s “doing it,” it’s better to be called a prude than to prove yourself profane or just at a loss for more descriptive words. If you are focused on career growth, your linguistic flexibility in forming ideas, not expletives, will be a major factor.

If you need a thesaurus, by all means, get one, and learn new ways of expressing yourself in a professional setting so that others don’t worry about whether you’d be an appropriate candidate for a promotion (or even for keeping your job).

3. Save it for later. If you truly must let loose with your cussing, consider waiting until later, when you’re surrounded by your buddies, to vent. At other times, when you’re in public, restrain yourself. There are always gentler, kinder words you can use, so adjust your vocabulary accordingly when you’re in mixed company.

Since swearing can be a wellhoned habit, it will help if you find alternatives. Squeeze your fingers together, make a fist, or tighten your toes when you feel a curse coming on. If you must mouth off, have a few milquetoast alternatives ready such as darn, shoot, rats or fudge. Or be creative and develop your own customized curse word—one busy bartender says hockey puck to let off steam.

The folks in Middleborough, Massachusetts may be on to something.

They know that exposure to excessive cursing can offend, and as a wise professor of speech once said, “Freedom of speech is not always free.”

This supports timely care decisions and delivery. Providers entering notes and orders directly into the system and barcodes on medications provide the safest and most efficient communication. “Everything relevant to your hospital stay is on the screen for your provider to see—medical history, medications, allergies, orders, treatment notes, test results,” Scott says.
