A fruitful endeavor: Community rallies to preserve its fruit-growing past

I

t takes 18 gallons of water to produce one apple.

That’s not a lot compared to the 100 gallons it takes to produce 40 sheets of paper and the 633 gallons required to make one hamburger. Without irrigation water, the Grand Valley would be without the fruit-bearing history it celebrates today.

Considering the Western Slope’s arid climate, it’s miraculous it became a fruit-growing mecca at all.

Orchards sprang to life as settlers arrived in the late 19th century, with harvests eventually exceeding local demand and earning the valley national recognition in the fruit-producing industry.

The Museums of Western Colorado (MWC) and Palisade Historical Society (PHS) are joining forces to bring the Grand Valley’s agricultural history to life through the revitalization of Cross Orchards Historic Site, 3073 F Road in Grand Junction.

Both organizations bring their

collective knowledge, manpower and resources to improve the grounds and enhance exhibits to better reflect what life was like during the Grand Valley’s fruit-producing heyday.

All in a day’s work The 22.4-acre Cross Orchards was once part of 243 acres that belonged to the Red Cross Land & Fruit Company, which was one of the biggest fruit growers in the valley at the turn of the last century. The company dominated the apple growing business for the next two decades until outbreaks of coddling moth devastated the orchards and eventually led to its closure in 1923.

“When the museum purchased the original historic property back in 1981, there were apple trees on the property, but not very many,” said Site Manager Matt Darling. “They’re trying to bring back the apple growing of the original Cross Orchards from before 1923.”

Darling had his work cut out for him when he joined Cross Orchards last September.

“The orchard needed a lot of work,” he said. “The irrigation system had fallen into disrepair and some of the trees died because of it—some wouldn’t get water because the irrigation system couldn’t divert water to them.”

A railroad historian and journeyman mechanic, he knew the farming aspect of the revitalization would be a challenge without sufficient manpower and outside expertise.

Fortunately, many Cross

Orchards volunteers are also gardeners. Darling feels particularly lucky because one of them happens to be a retired irrigation specialist.

“His irrigation knowledge is priceless,” Darling said. “I could not do what I’m doing without his decades of experience.”

In addition to planting new trees and increasing crop yield, Darling wants to improve the look and efficiency of the grounds by clearing dead trees and overgrown weeds, planting new trees, repairing structures, installing signs and building victory gardens outside the “1945 house,” a former tenant property that will eventually become a World War II exhibit.

“The house needs a lot of work so it’s years down the road, but my coworker, Carly, and I came up with the idea of putting in this World War II-era victory garden in the front yard of this old house,” Darling said. “It would give my gardeners something to do but also be a new exhibit teaching the history of the country.”

History and hands-on learning The revitalization is not just about the apple-growing history of Cross Orchards—it’s about fruit in the Grand Valley. When it comes to the history of the local fruit industry, the knowledge afforded by members of the Palisade Historical Society is invaluable.

“We’re still in the productive agricultural area that’s been producing the best peaches in the world for 125 years,” said PHS Chair Priscilla Walker. “Our current members are fruit growers.”

Volunteers with Cross Orchards and the Palisade Historical Society are the lifeblood of revitalizing Cross Orchards. valley’s agricultural history through stories and peach-packing demonstrations and creating signage and guided tours so people can learn on their own. PHS members are also experts on the tools and vehicles used in the orchards, including hoopies—trucks with the bodies, doors and windshields removed so they could be driven under fruit trees to accelerate harvesting. Walker said the name comes from the “hooping and hollering” when teens took them for joy rides off-season.

“Fruit-growing is very labor intensive,” said Walker, “but to go to Cross Orchards and see it is just breathtaking. Even some of my volunteers who didn’t grow up here went to a peach-packing demonstration and realized how much work it was.”

That’s why 7,000 migrant laborers are needed for peach harvest in August, she said.

PHS members will talk about the year-round process of tending to orchards on April 7 at A Day in the Orchard, Cross Orchards’ seasonal “soft opening” where visitors can tour the buildings and watch volunteers plant trees and work the garden.

“I’m going to have docents out there just talking to people,” Darling said. “Come see Cross Orchards at work and get to know us.”

PHS will bring their peach-packing display to Spring Day on the Farm,

Cross Orchards’ premiere spring event that also brings artists, woodcarvers, blacksmiths, guest animals and other history organizations to the farm on May 5.

“If anyone wants to try their hand at it, they can pack a few peaches (using foam peaches since peaches won’t be ripe in May) and we can give them a nickel because that’s what you would’ve gotten paid 50 years ago for packing an entire box of peaches,” Walker said.

Darling plans to host an event at Cross Orchards almost every month throughout the summer, including a truck show held in conjunction with the American Truck Historical Society on May 26 and a summer train show with the Grand Valley Model Railroad Club and the National Railroad Historical Society Rio Grande Chapter on June 2-3—all culminating in Fall Day on the Farm, Cross Orchards’ biggest event of the year.

Visitors can purchase cider and observe the process, as apples are processed through a 100-year-old apple cider grinder and press which are hand-cranked by volunteers and local Boy Scouts.

Darling said once needed upgrades and repairs to the orchard are made and new trees are planted, the crop yield will increase, which means Cross Orchards will have more apple cider to sell.

“It will take time, but we have to make money to keep the doors open,” he said.

How ’bout them apples?

Darling said the orchard currently has about 80 trees, with 20 more to be planted this season. Volunteers and other private individuals have donated trees, and Cross Orchards will receive a dozen or so trees from the Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project in Cortez, which shares Cross Orchards’ and PHS’ mission of preserving the fruit-growing history of the region. It also preserves rare varieties of trees by collecting grafts from heritage apple trees.

“The orchard upgrades are coming very fast,” he said. “It won’t be too long before those trees are producing fruit.”

Darling said most apples are ready to be picked mid-August, but depending on the variety, they may not be ready until mid-October.

“We’re thrilled that Matt is bringing Cross Orchards to feature agriculture in the whole valley,” Walker said.

Revitalization efforts would be impossible without the community’s help. Darling is grateful for PHS, his volunteers, Apple Hill Farms, Mesa Conservation District and other community partners for their support. ■

Earth Day festivities branch out in Grand Valley

O

n April 22, 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets for our country’s inaugural Earth Day celebration. This environmental movement was pivotal in leading to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. It’s now the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.

Caring for the environment is a cause that’s far from absent in the minds of Grand Valley residents, as citizens and organizations rally to celebrate the Earth through education, community and preservation projects, not just in April, but also year-round. Many of these organizations are part of Western Colorado Days of Action (WCDA), an umbrella agency representing over 20 local organizations working on the front lines of positive change on civic, environmental, economic and social justice issues.

Retired teacher and WCDA member Kayla Dodson has been an advocate for the environment since she was a student in Washington, DC. “I was

a high school student in the late ’60s and early ’70s when my school started an environmental action club…in part, because the Potomac River was so polluted that recreation on or near it was impossible,” Dodson said.

Dodson is also part of EarthDayEveryDay, a group of volunteers who work together to keep environmental actions and issues in the public eye year-round.

Grand Valley Audubon (GVA) President Cary Atwood believes sharing information with future generations about preserving the environment takes Earth Day’s messages beyond a one-day celebration.

The holiday that started it all Earth Day stemmed from a much earlier conservation event—Arbor Day. First observed in Nebraska in 1872, this tree-planting holiday originated when nature lover and journalist J. Sterling Morton proposed the initiative to the state board of agriculture, which rewarded communities that planted the most trees on that day.

National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April, according to the Arbor Day Foundation, but state observances vary depending on the area’s best planting times. In Colorado, Arbor Day is observed on the third Friday in April.

In observance of these planet-saving initiatives, GVA encourages volunteers of all ages to participate in two volunteer planting days on April 21 and 22 at the Audubon Preserve, 610 Dike Road, near Connected Lakes.

Southwest Arbor Fest WCDA, John McConnell Math & Science Center, Colorado State University Extension and Colorado Environmental Coalition are among the organizations that will be at Southwest Arbor Fest at Lincoln Park on April 21.

“This family oriented event celebrates Earth Day with various educational and plant-related booths,” said Grand Junction Recreation Coordinator Lorie Gregor.

Southwest Arbor Fest kicks off the festival season at noon with live music, vendor booths, a macaroni and cheese cook-off, Colorado Craft Beer Expo and tree lottery.

Seventy-five mature trees will be raffled off as part of the lottery, which starts at 9 a.m. at Lincoln Park Barn. Raffle tickets cost $2 each, with drawings at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Winners must be present and able to attend a free educational lecture about how to care for the trees immediately following the raffle.

The trees to be raffled off are all hardy to the area, said City Forester Randy Coleman. Among them are hot wings tartarian maple, whiteshield osage orange, golden rain tree and Turkish filbert, Norwegian sunset maple and ginko.

Coleman said free tree seedlings will be given away in limited quantities. For information, call 254-3861.

Instructions: Cut pork loin into 1/2-inch thick slices then into 1/4-inch wide strips. In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Stir-fry half the pork loin 7-8 minutes until well browned. Set aside on separate plate and repeat with 1 tablespoon oil and remaining pork.

Cook pasta according to package directions.

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick ADVICE COLUMN FOR THE OVER 50 CROWD Dear Old Bag: I guess you could say I have the retirement jitters. I love my job—always have. Now I’m at full retirement age and will have a decent income, but it still doesn’t feel right. It’s not that I don’t have hobbies—I just don’t find them to be as enjoyable as my job. My friends can’t wait to retire.

They think I’m crazy. Do you? Signed, Not Ready Dear Not Ready: I do not think you are crazy. For some of us, retirement is highly overrated. If you love what you are doing, it does not seem like work, right? I retired at full retirement age, and then kept getting called to work for different companies.

I could not resist going back part time. When I fully retired, I volunteered and went to the gym five times a week, etc. Since I spent my career working with the older population, I yearned to work with young people and make a difference. At 78, I was able to get a job as a para teacher at a school for autistic children. It wasn’t easy, but it was one of the most satisfying jobs I ever had. More and more seniors are working into their 70s and 80s. Follow your gut and good luck.

OB Dear Old Bag: I have been in Alcoholics Anonymous for over 17 years— sober, too. In reference to last month’s column, I have not heard, nor do we have a saying, “Fake it until you make it.” Signed, Stayin’ Sober Dear Sober: First of all, congratulations on 17 years! About 30 years ago, my sister-in-law needed AA and the only way she would go was if I went with her. I went four or five

times. The first night, she told them she did not believe in a higher power.

Can cellphones affect your pacemaker?

odern pacemakers have built-in protection from most interferences produced by everyday electrical appliances. Some say cellphones are harmless while others insist you shouldn’t put your phone directly over your pacemaker because it may misinterpret a phone signal and withhold pacing, making you feel tired.

• Briefly passing through metal detectors at airports doesn’t interfere with pacemakers—however, I don’t recommend leaning against them or hanging around them for long periods. If security personnel want to use a hand-held metal detector, ask them to avoid your pacemaker or ask for an alternate form of search.

While the subject is under scrutiny, I prefer to follow the old adage “better safe than sorry.”

• Power machines aren’t considered everyday appliances and are dangerous.

Stand at least two feet away from arc-welding equipment, high-voltage transformers and motor-generator systems.

What is a pacemaker?

A pacemaker is a small device that’s surgically implanted beneath your collarbone to help regulate heartbeat.

Some models are as small as a quarter and are made up of a pulse generator and flexible, insulated wires called leads that deliver electrical pulses to the heart. Many seniors get them to treat bradycardia—slow heartbeat—which is brought on by age.

While modern pacemakers are pretty safe and stable, consider the following:

• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a no-no if you have a pacemaker. In fact, this goes for any procedure that exposes you to electromagnetic energy, including therapeutic radiation, shockwave lithotripsy (used to break up large kidney stones), and electrocautery (used to control bleeding during surgery).

• Anti-theft systems are unlikely to cause clinically significant symptoms in most people with pacemakers, but it’s still best not to linger near one any longer than necessary.

• Short-wave or microwave diathermy uses high-frequency, high-intensity signals that may interfere with a pacemaker.

• Ear buds and clip-on headphones can cause interference, but Bluetooth headsets do not. Keep headphones at least 1.2 inches away from your pacemaker.

Remember to inform health care professionals of your pacemaker before receiving any treatment, and always carry an identification card that tells people you have a pacemaker. ■

ometimes varicose veins seem to come out of nowhere.

It’s estimated that more than 40 million Americans have them­—they mostly impact the legs and feet. Most people over age 60 have them to some degree, but they aren’t usually problematic. They’re different from spider veins, which aren’t nearly as noticeable unless you have “drinker’s nose,” which is a condition often thought to be associated with excessive drinking, but there has been no proven link.

Varicose veins can become a serious issue, causing pain, throbbing and swelling and increasing the risk of blood clots.

Unfortunately, the risk of developing problematic veins increases as you age.

pring is the season of renewal.

Plants and trees start to rebound from the harsh winter that claimed most of their leaves and vegetation.

Birds return from their Southern vacations, serenade us with their morning songs and rebuild their nests in preparation for new arrivals.

Unfortunately, there is another renewal that many people don’t look forward to—the return of hay fever season along with symptoms such as sneezing and sniffling that can give you sleepless nights.

In an allergy survey conducted

by HayMax (www.haymax.us), 92 percent of respondents said their hay fever symptoms affect their work, school or daily routine, which includes sleep patterns.

“The trick to sleeping well when you suffer from hay fever is to reduce the amount of pollen getting into your body at night,” said Max Wiseberg, creator of HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm, which helps reduce dust, allergens and pollen from entering the body.

People can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction, he said, but once this amount is exceeded—considered the trigger level—hay fever symptoms start to occur.

Wiseberg offered a few tips on how to avoid reaching that trigger level, allowing you to rest easy at night.

Keep bedding and fabrics clean.

Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds, fabrics and curtains to remove pollen, dust and pet allergen particles. Wash bedding regularly to remove allergens and dry them indoors rather than on a clothesline to prevent pollen particles being blown onto them by the wind.

Keep the house closed from the outside world. Close windows and use an air conditioner, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to capture pollen and dust particles, and to cool and circulate the air.

Have a nightly routine before bed. Shower at night to remove pollen particles and pet hair from your hair and body before you go to sleep.

Clear the nasal passages with water, or use a saline nasal spray. Finally, apply an allergen barrier balm to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes to trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they enter the body.

Ensure that pets are well groomed. If you own a pet, shampoo it as much as possible to remove pet allergens and pollen particles, or ban it from the bedroom completely.

“Loss of sleep because of hay fever is very significant, as it can impact how a person functions the next day at school or at work,” Wiseberg said. ■

Fad diets can lead to bad breath

F

ad diets gain popularity because they let you shed pounds quickly, but health professionals warn they often come with side effects, such as fatigue, nausea, headaches, constipation, dehydration and bad breath.

“Dehydration is the key symptom related to fad diets that can result in halitosis,” said California-based dentist and bacteriologist Dr. Harold Katz. “When you’re dehydrated, your body doesn’t produce as much saliva.

When you have less saliva, bacteria growth increases and causes bad breath.”

Known as the Bad Breath Guru from his numerous television appearances on TV shows like “Good Morning America,” “Early Show” and “The View,” Katz suggests a few things worth knowing about fad diets and their effect on your breath: • Fasting. When you fast or follow a fad diet that focuses on consuming a single food or beverage, you’re more likely to become dehydrated.

“If you’re determined to continue fasting, just make sure you’re still drinking enough water to stay hydrated every day,” Katz said. “This will not only contribute to fresh breath, but will also contribute to your overall wellness.”

• Ketosis. Ketosis is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that promises quick weight loss if you eat less than 20 grams of carbs in a single day, according to Environmental Nutrition.

“It’s true that you can lose weight

quickly through ketosis, which is the state your body goes into when it doesn’t have enough carbs to feed off of, but you’re not improving your health,” Katz said. “Plus, halitosis can occur as a result of the chemicals released in the body to burn fat.”

• Protein shakes. Some people attempt to lose weight by replacing meals with protein shakes. The Mayo Clinic reports that while protein shakes can help reduce calories, which can lead to weight loss, if you replace too many regular meals with the shake, you end up missing out on the nutritional benefits of whole foods.

“Protein and dairy can also cause your breath to smell,” Katz said. “You should brush your teeth and use an oral rinse right after you drink a protein shake, or at the very least drink some water afterward to rinse out your mouth.”

Instead of relying on a fad diet to lose excess pounds, Katz suggested focusing on changing your lifestyle habits as a whole.

“If you exercise regularly and follow a well-balanced diet that’s loaded with nutrients from fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains, you can give your body the fuel it needs to thrive and maintain a healthy weight,” he said. “And your breath won’t be as likely to go rancid.”

W

hile gazing into my closet full of black, beige and gray, I realize how drab everything appears. The flowers outside my window are regal in bright red, purple and yellow adorning the earth with color. I should move them to my closet full of dull!

Yes, it’s spring— time to shoo the winter out of our minds and

out of our closets! Spring is the time to breathe fresh air and experience renewal.

When I witness the dogwoods blossoming and azaleas turning pink, I often wonder why we can’t re-bloom in spring. Why am I getting older with each passing season instead of starting over with new hair and skin every April? Doesn’t that seem a bit unfair?

Even though I am a mature woman, it doesn’t mean my clothes need to reflect my age. Drab old blah needs to transform into colorful joy! The old oak tree whose branches spread over part of my window will soon turn gray dormancy into bold new green depicting vibrancy and youth.

I love when women and men evoke who they are through the clothes they wear. What we wear should be an extension of our personalities. Our clothes need to reflect our innate sense of comfort with ourselves—to stand a bit taller and our smiles brighter.

Could my black dress be cute for spring if I accompany it with a bright yellow sweater? Could I pair my jeans with a coral linen shirt? Perhaps I could update my beige slacks by adding a cute top with sassy jewelry to turn boring into spectacular! Should I splurge and buy a new pink outfit

to wake up my youthfulness, buried under the snow spirit?

Balancing the idea of youthful style with maturity is akin to walking a thin wire without a net over teeming alligators. Some women wear dowdy because someone told them they needed to dress their age.

Some women believe they can wear cut-off blue jeans and a bikini top at 90. Some women need a brain and glasses.

There are some extraordinary women in my neighborhood who exemplify great style any time of year. Their clothes are an extension of their ageless, vibrant personali-

ties. They continuously strive to stay young at heart.

I called four of these women and asked them to go into their closet and find a spring outfit.

“Be sure you select one that reflects who you are,” I told them. “Do not buy anything. You have two days before we take your picture!”

Because they are all good pals and put up with my bossiness, they agreed.

I laughed as they came through the door all clad in clothes that precisely echoed who they were. Their selections were no surprise at all.

will not cover a drab spirit. If we are fearful and consumed with our age, then we need to stay in the gray of winter and close the closet door.

This spring, why not throw drab away, lift your youthful spirit and proudly let it show? Just like the oak tree, remember you are never too old to renew. ■

I know Deborah so well that I could predict with accuracy what she would wear to our little photo shoot. Her tall frame can pull off a bold black and white checkered dress with ballet flats. The bright yellow sweater is precisely the color of her happy attitude.

The pearls around Geri’s neck are the perfect accessory for a gem of a lady. She wears elegance as comfortably as most people wear a pair of jeans. She is a cancer survivor, a pure Southern belle and steel magnolia—strong, vital and assured that age is just a state of mind. She learned this pearl of wisdom from her 101-year-old, stylish, intelligent mother, Nadine, who lives a few miles away.

Ricki is a retired school counselor with a slew of grandchildren. I call her “Miss Preppy with Sass.” Ricki is donning wedge shoes, ankle jeans and a coral linen top with a matching scarf. She is joyful, classy, beautiful and a friend to all.

She tries to improve her life every day with a new idea, a renewed attitude or a lesson she has learned from the many books she reads.

Judy is the youngest of the four and newly retired. She has faced some hardships in life, including cancer, but you would never know by the broad smile she carries through her daily life. I believe she must wake up every day looking exactly as she did at the party the night before. Judy is always dressed in perfect style with not a hair out of place while spreading an abundance of cheer.

His friend was impressed, but he looked around and saw no cattle.

Lessons on living from a life cut short

W

e raised a glass of champagne in celebration of a life well lived to the very end.

My friend Brian Davis had no time—or desire—to talk about the fact that he was dying because he was too busy living.

I learned a lot about living from Brian over the past two years. I became his student from the moment he told me about his emergency surgery for colon cancer. I asked if he was worried about it.

“Would it help?” he replied.

I was intrigued by Brian’s zest for life. Even when cancer came back with a vengeance, he took on new hobbies, made travel plans, got together with friends and family, and lived each day to the fullest.

I’d hoped to have one-on-one time with him before he passed away in December—to better understand his secrets to positivity and strength— but I never got the chance.

He was 64 years young.

With blessings from his wife, Jeannie, here are some of the lessons he taught me about living and dying.

Never stop learning. Brian was a lifelong learner. In his 50s, he went to work for Hi-Fashion Fabrics

repairing sewing machines. He traveled to Texas, took classes and enjoyed eight years doing what he loved.

Take up new hobbies. He took up pickleball a few years ago and last summer, he invested in the equipment and spent many peaceful hours sailing with the model yacht club at Canyon View Park.

Tell people how much you appreciate them. Brian sent an email to update his friends and family on his condition last July, adding that the cancer was aggressive and “taking a tour of [his] body.” But he ended the email with a heart-felt admission: “My friends mean more than anything to me, and you have a right to my honesty.”

Tell others about those you appreciate. You didn’t have to wonder if Brian loved Jeannie or how much his 97-year-old father meant to him because he told you. He loved to brag about other people.

Never stop caring about others.

Speaking of bragging, Brian spent seven years tutoring and teaching citizenship classes at the library in addition to volunteering in the community. He was proud of his students and didn’t hesitate to tell others that every one of his 93 students who took the citizenship test passed the first time.

Have a reason for getting up every day. Brian spent a week at the HopeWest Care Center in October. Instead of going home once he was released, he dressed in a suit and tie and went directly to the library where he taught a New Dimensions class. He was entertaining and engag-

ing—you’d never know what he was going through.

Don’t take life too seriously.

Brian had a quirky sense of humor.

Many recognized him by his flamboyant shirts. He loved to dress up for any occasion, whether it was a costume party or a tux and tails event.

Brian and Jeannie’s guest bathroom was decorated from floor to ceiling with Disney posters.

Make others laugh. Brian dressed in army fatigues when he taught students how to use their sewing machines. He’d blow his whistle and order them to “give him ten” if they messed up.

Never stop making plans. A lifelong traveler, Brian was determined to complete another big trip last fall. With the help of HopeWest, he and Jeannie took a two-week cruise through the Panama Canal. I called him when they returned and he reported having a fantastic time. He passed away the next week.

I lost a friend that day, as did many others. Although Brian had so much more he wanted to do, his message to the rest of us lives on—don’t waste one minute. Thanks, Brian. Cheers! ■

Boomers are booming!

I

wonder why my pee smells after I eat asparagus. I wonder why the sky is blue. I wonder why my car warns me when the air in my tires is low but my car battery dies with no warning whatsoever.

But you know what I don’t worry about? My future career.

As a baby boomer, I’ve had many.

My last one forced me to go out of work on disability at only 50 years old. Even though I couldn’t hold down a “real” job anymore, I still had a brain. I started doing volunteer work on the good days. That helped.

But there were still good days left unfulfilled.

While I was out running errands one day, I had an emotional experience that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I couldn’t sleep for two days, so I got up in the middle of the night, sat down at the computer, and wrote about it. Then I was finally able to go back to bed.

I’m not sure what possessed me to do this, but I submitted the story to a news outlet the next day and then forgot about it. I checked my email some time later and received a reply from the editor with a request to publish it.

I wrote another story weeks later and submitted it to him. The next thing I knew, he sent me a contract to pay me for my work. That’s how my freelancing career began.

Experience, money—boomers have it all Unfortunately, I’m still ill and will never be able to hold down a 9-to-5 job again, but for me, this is a terrific compromise. When I feel well, I write; on bad days, I don’t.

It seems I’m not alone. I don’t consider myself to be an entrepreneur with the limited amount of freelance work I do, but there are many boomers who are. In fact, people over 50 are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S. The Small Business Administration reported that 8.3 percent of boomers are

self-employed, compared to only 2 percent of millennials.

Statistics show that eight out of every 10 boomers start businesses for lifestyle reasons, not financial reasons—just like me. Some of us were forced into these positions by our health or lay-offs, but others found that once they retired, they still had the time and energy to continue to work. We have experience, contacts, financial stability and we know what we want and what our limitations are. Many boomers have been able to start a business with residual income from commissions or pensions, and some just want to supplement their Social Security benefits and their savings.

Confidence is key It could be that millennials feel they can’t take the financial risk to start their own businesses. In 2016, these kids graduated with an average of over $30,000 in student loan debt. Additionally, unemployment for millennials is high and underemployment is even higher. Perhaps the reason more boomers become entrepreneurs is because they have confidence—after all, they have a lifetime of experience behind them.

Perhaps millennials who spent their childhoods winning trophies just for showing up don’t have the confidence to go out on their own without the assurance of success.

I don’t have the answers. When I Google urine and asparagus together, I find out something about acid and sulfur, but I still don’t get it. When I research why the sky is blue, I find it has something to do with light and molecules, but I still don’t really get it. When I ask my auto dealer why there’s no warning light that goes on when my battery is low, they just shrug.

But you know what? They’re not boomers. If they were, they just might have the experience, confidence and gumption to start a business that does just that—because boomers get it! ■

n a wilderness area of rolling hills and waterways in Nova Scotia, the story of the people who lived here 4,000 years ago is told in periodic drumming demonstrations, birch bark canoe building and other activities.

The scene is very different in a nearby village. A number of its French-speaking residents are descen-

dants of the man who founded the community in 1653, and restaurants serve food that would be at home in Paris.

Many visitors are drawn to Nova Scotia, Canada by Mother Nature’s magnificent handiworks. The famous Cabot Trail highway winds along the rugged Atlantic coastline, which is pocked by inlets and bays overlooked by tiny fishing villages. The interior changes from forests to low hills to

In honor of the fresh beginning that springtime affords us and as we gear up for another season of creation, I want to shed light on another theme: space, and how we can use it more fully.

We create How we utilize space sets the stage for much of our experience inside and outside the garden. Raised beds encourage movement when bending low might not feel great in the body. Pathways and shady seating areas encourage us to slow down, ponder and rest.

Each season is an opportunity to create backyard utopias—spaces in which to manifest and discover. We can always utilize the space we have more fully.

Expanding our perception of the space we have available to us is the first step in creating rewarding, inspiring and bountiful spaces.

Filling the nooks and crannies On the Western Slope, tomatoes go in the ground after Mother’s Day. Utilizing garden space means planting something in your tomato patch that will grow during the weeks and months leading up to that glorious day of tomato planting.

A thick bed of buckwheat will suppress weeds. Put out flowers for beneficial insects and fix nitrogen in the soil.

Greens will protect the soil and keep it moist, while providing you with another crop to harvest as the weather warms.

As you plan your garden, consider the whole season—early spring through late fall. Warm season crops are bountiful, delicious, colorful and exciting, but they’re not the only crops we can put our energy into.

Extend your season and create a more biodiverse, lush and bountiful garden space by planting cool season vegetables and quick-growing roots and greens. Plant shade-loving plants under trees and below garden crops that grow tall in the summertime. Think of your garden space as three-dimensional—extending up from the ground into vertical space—adding depth for exploration.

Fill more nooks and crannies of your physical garden space and the length of your growing season by planting annual and perennial flowers and herbs. Blooms will attract pollinators

Backyard bird feeding tips for year-round enjoyment

M

any bird watchers believe they should only feed birds in the winter months when resources are scarce due to colder temperatures and the arrival of snow. But the truth is that they can feed birds throughout the year, regardless of season and weather. It’s a treat to experience the different sights and sounds, including the colorful plumage, rituals and possible hatchings in the warmer months and observing habits of the birds that didn’t migrate in the fall and winter.

While there are more natural food sources available in the summer, such as flowers, insects, fruits and natural seeds, parent birds are also overworked trying to provide for their growing babies. Supplementing food with feeders is an easy and convenient way for many summer birds to have the nutrition they need, especially when there are more birds around to compete for the same food sources. The quality of the food that’s provided, however, is important.

Make sure to buy nutritious blends that are most suitable for the birds in your yard. Bird seed mixtures targeted to a wide range of bird species are the cheapest and most wasteful, and they’re packed with fillers like milo.

While larger birds, such as quail and doves, will eat milo, it has very little nutritional value, and small birds cannot eat it because of its size. Most birds will pick through the seed, which results in a mess under your feeder. Try to find mixes with protein and mineral-filled seeds, such as sunflower seeds, millet, nyjer, safflower, cracked corn and wheat.

Make sure to keep your seed dry and cool year-round, but especially during the summer months, as heat and moisture can cause mold or moths to get into your food. Move your feeders occasionally and clean them with a mild solution to prevent bacteria. Put suet in the shade. While some companies make no-melt suet, heat from the sun will cause the suet to spoil much faster than cooler temperatures.

You don’t need to worry that feeding the birds will make them dependent on handouts. While many of the same birds will regularly visit your feeder as part of their daily foraging, studies show that wild birds only get an average of 25 percent of their food from feeders.

Happy and healthy birds provide the best bird watching experiences, so keep your bird feeders full with nutritious seed and watch the beautiful birds year-round. ■

y wife does all the driving when we go places together. It’s not that I don’t find driving enjoyable; I just don’t enjoy making decisions on the fly. I have a real anxiety about losing things, and its magnitude is compounded when I’m the object that is lost while traveling at high speed.

My GPS is the most useful gadget I own. While I use my smartphone regularly, my decade-old Garmin Nuvi GPS has saved my nerves so many times.

While smartphones are equipped with GPS, they require a data signal to be fully reliable. It also tends to drain the phone battery and, in some cases, can cause the phone to overheat.

Standalone GPS devices made by Garmin, TomTom and others work without the need for any internet connection, making them dependable, even when there are zero bars on your cellphone.

GPS devices are priced as low as $80; a $250 device is usually equipped with more features than you will ever need. All offer voice navigation, speed limit information, time and distance to destination, and can search for nearby points of interest.

“Recalculating” GPS can be frustrating to some people who feel the device likes to blurt out unclear instructions at the last moment.

Your property taxes depend on your tax rate and your property’s current market value, which is determined by a local assessor. You can’t dispute the tax rate, but you may be able to show why the assessed value is too high.

An appeal that results in a lower value could save you money for years to come. Check your current assessment for errors. Every year, you should receive a letter stating the assessed value of your home. If you think your property value is lower than the stated value, start collecting proof to demonstrate your reasoning.

One of the first things to look for is a mistake on your property’s description, which may be on the letter you received or on your property card, available at the assessor’s office or online.

It’s not unheard of for a property card to list an extra bathroom or incorrect square footage. Assessors aren’t always able to look inside a home during an inspection, and they might not know about renovations. Make a note of errors and try to estimate the value of each.

Start the process by determining when you can appeal your home’s value assessment. You may be able to find the deadline on your local assessor’s website along with instructions on how to file an appeal.

Some areas have a several-month window each year for appeals, often following the annual mailing of assessment value notices. You might be able to dispute your property’s assessment following a renovation or if you just bought the home.

How to find evidence To strengthen your appeal, you may want to find additional evidence.

• Make a list of comparable properties. Try to get a list of four to six similar properties in your area and their market value. You can use websites like www.realtor.com and www.zillow.com that list recent sales prices, ask your neighbors or look through public databases to find official assessed values. If you find the homes’ sales prices or assessed values are lower than yours (or similar but your home is in worse condition), you may have a strong argument.

• Estimate the cost of repairs. A leaky roof, cracked driveway or another issue could lower your property’s value. Make a list of the faults, estimate cost for repairs and take pictures as proof.

• Make a note of changes in your neighborhood. A property’s value depends on more than just the home. If nearby houses were recently foreclosed on or the schools’ rankings dropped, your property could be worth less than before.

• Get a professional assessment.

You could hire a state-certified appraiser to estimate your property’s current value. However, the assessment might cost $300 to $500, and this might only be a good idea if your research already looks fruitful.

File an appeal Once you organize your evidence, it’s time to file an appeal.

The appeal process varies depending on where you live.

In Mesa County, fill out the Real Property Protest Form found at assessor.mesacounty.us/forms.aspx and mail it in by June 30. Hearings will be held from June 15 through July 5.

Think twice if you’re considering selling your home soon. A lower assessed value might affect how much someone is willing to pay for the home. ■

elving into family history has become a pastime for many Americans, especially seniors. TV is full of ads about finding long-lost relatives, discovering connections you didn’t know about and even testing your DNA to learn more about your family’s countries of origin.

This trend has also caught the attention of thieves. A few years ago, scammers were busted for using well-known genealogy sites to glean details they could use to steal identities. Now, they have a newer set of schemes.

A legacy of scams Years ago, a company called Halbert’s, based in Bath, Ohio, grew rich selling what its owners claimed were books of personal family history.

They sold them through snail mail mostly, offering a detailed, one-of-akind collection of information about your family, available for a limited time only.

Turns out they weren’t much more than phone books with grandiose names. Halbert’s was eventually prosecuted for fraud and shut down, but that didn’t stop other scoundrels from taking advantage of the money-making idea.

These days, the scams are perpetrated by email or through social media ads that offer books, scrolls, plaques and crests exploring the origin of your family name. In truth, they contain scant verifiable details— usually ones you can easily find on your own.

Hold off before calling that specialist There are bona fide genealogy specialists who can be a great resource for digging into your family history.

Many honest people make a healthy living this way. But, as with everything else, beware the scoundrels.

Again, keep in mind that a person does not have to be certified to be great at what he or she does. The problem lies in falsely claiming credentials.

inding a business to work on your heating and cooling systems isn’t difficult in Mesa County. Just open the phone book, do an internet search or ask a friend.

But finding a company with the technical knowledge to correctly install or repair a new unit coupled

“The HVAC system is the largest mechanical moving piece of a house,” Ostrander added. “It uses the most utilities and is the most noticeable when it’s not working.”

Ostrander said proper system installation is more important than the unit a homeowner chooses.

ive your life harmony with the melodies of the men from the Bookcliff Barbershop Harmony Chrous (BBHC), which celebrates 50 years at its spring concert on Saturday, April 7 at the Avalon Theatre.

Fellowship and family Dennis Kiefer, BBHC music and program vice president, is a charter member and has sung with the chorus since it started in 1968.

“There’s one other member of our chorus who came in during that first year,” said Kiefer, 76. “We’re getting to be relics.”

Kiefer’s mother, Florence, helped start the local Sweet Adelines chorus and his father, Jerome, was persuaded to help start a men’s chorus through the Barbershop Harmony Society. After a couple of years, the men still weren’t moving fast enough. “[My mom] kept bugging my dad saying, ‘What’s going on with the men? They’re not getting their act together,” Kiefer said.

He said she got tired of waiting so she wrote a letter to the society’s district officers. Within three months they had an organizational meeting and two district officers came over and helped the BBHC get started.

Their first show was in June 1968.

“It’s been great to be part of it all this time,” Kiefer said. “It’s truly a fellowship of families and men.”

Celebrating 50 years of song Singing barbershop harmony has become tradition in Kiefer’s family.

His son, Kevin, also sings with the chorus.

“It’s just something we love,” said Kiefer, who sings baritone and bass.

sually, realizing you’re out of laundry soap is not a moment of utter despair. Just drive to the nearest store, spend $13 for detergent, wash your desired garment, slip it on and go. But when you factor in a self-imposed ban on using your credit card for purchases and have no cash in your pocket, it’s a recipe for frustration. That’s the situation I found myself in recently.

After a momentary tantrum that included one or two not-ready-forgrandkids words, I accepted the reality: I needed to choose a new outfit for that evening’s event. What I thought was a disaster turned out to be a blessing. The runner-up garment proved to be much more comfortable and suitable. I chalked it up as a win.

Several days later, I began researching do-it-yourself laundry detergent recipes on the internet. I wasn’t surprised to find an abundance of resources—what surprised me was that they were all basically the same recipe, containing three ingredients: borax, washing soda and a natural bar of soap. At a big-box store, four pounds of borax and washing soda cost $3.99 each and a bar of a natural soap costs just 99 cents.

When I had cash in my wallet once again, I headed to the store, having been guaranteed by the universe’s DIY gurus that these items could be easily found. The gurus were honest and true—the borax and washing soda sat among the laundry detergents. The bar soap rested comfortably just west of the pharmacy.

At home, I proudly showed off my purchases to my husband and got to work grating the bar soap with my cheese grater. He remembered his mother grating soap in his childhood, which probably meant she, too, made her own detergent.

Once the soap resembled soft, white curls of cheese, I added one cup of borax and one cup of washAccepted ing soda. The next step was to store the mixture in an airtight container.

I chose a mason jar from our cabinet and slapped on a mailing label I had on hand: “Laundry, add 1-3 tablespoons per load.” Stir. Measure.

Wash. Wait. It was that simple.

The virgin laundry load was full of my husband’s dirty work jeans. His response would be the determining factor as to whether we’d continue using my new detergent or not.

Pulling them out of the dryer several hours later, he gave them a quick once-over. Then he pulled his favorite, battered jeans up over his hips, buttoned the fly, and declared, “Looks good.”

Feeling encouraged by my simple success, I perused the internet once more for dishwasher soap. I was pleased to find the two main ingredients were borax and washing soda.

The recipe I used called for white distilled vinegar to be added in the rinse cycle. My dishwasher does not share such personal information with me, so I just took greater care to rinse the dishes before loading them. I closed the lid, selected the smart wash cycle and hoped for the best. The dishes appeared clean, but running my hand across the surface revealed they were gritty and covered in fingerprints.

Apparently, adding vinegar really does matter!

I’ve been bitten by the DIY bug. I felt a connection to generations of women before me and wondered what cleaning supplies they made at different times in history, before we became so dependent on big business for our needs. Now if I can only figure out how to make my own borax, washing soda and pure bar soap. ■

Citizens combat climate change with legislation

017 was one of the driest years on record for the Grand Valley, with the fall months showing only a trace of precipitation, ski areas opening late and winter outdoor enthusiasts praying for snow. The first two months of 2018 were no better.

Though many people deny our climate is changing, others declare that weather patterns have definitely shifted. Whether you agree with scientists or not, the Grand Junction and Montrose chapters of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) would like you to think about what’s going on with our weather.

Influence from all CCL is an international organization with over 450 active chapters nationwide seeking to combat climate change through specific legislation that would reduce greenhouse gases by charging fossil fuel producers a fee of $100 per ton of carbon dioxide produced. The monies collected would then be returned to each household in the country. “‘Household’ means one or two adults, and each adult would be allocated one share,” said Dave Reed, 58, who heads up the Grand Junction Chapter with fellow member, Ken Scissors. “Each child would receive

half a share, up to three shares per household. It’s a perfect case of thinking globally and acting locally.”

They emphasized that the legislation doesn’t raise the cost to the government.

“The only role government would play is to administrate the collection and distribution of funds and will have no discretion to change the law,” Scissors, 64, said.

CCL wants to show that citizens can influence both the laws and the environment. The Montrose chapter has collected letters from community members about environmental concerns and presented them to local legislators.

“We spread information and education on environment issues and influence legislators to pay attention to these issues,” said Montrose Chapter Secretary Janet Chapman, 71.

CCL seeks bipartisan support in respect for common grounds and to involve supporters across the entire political spectrum without casting blame or making moral judgments.

“We all drive cars and heat our homes,” Reed said.

Reed cited a more stable climate, meaning no droughts and no forest fires crippling Forest Service budgets or causing harm to individuals and their property.

Scissors is concerned with the effect the changing climate has on citizen health. He said Canada is already using a fee-based carbon reduction program and doing the same in the U.S. will bring our nation into alignment with the Paris Accord, a climate agreement between most of the world’s countries that aims to Grand Junction Citizens’ Climate Change Lobby trip to the U.S. capitol.

Scissors and Reed said that making changes in our everyday lives, such as recycling, carpooling and reducing multiple car trips, isn’t enough.

“We need policy change,” Reed said. “People change behavior when money is the motivator.”

Unfortunately, Scissors and Reed said it would take at least 10 years to reverse the effects that greenhouse gases have already had on the climate.

“We’re glad that people are becoming more aware and involved in taking up personal responsibility, but things aren’t going to change unless we change the laws,” Chapman echoed.

USS Colorado commissioned T he newest Virginia-class attack submarine, USS Colorado (SSN 788) was commissioned at Naval Submarine Base New London on March 17, 2018. It is the 15th Virginia-class attack submarine to join the fleet.

As the most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world, the submarine can operate in both littoral and deep ocean environments and presents combatant commanders with a broad and unique range of operational capabilities. Colorado is a flexible, multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of Special Operations Forces (SOF), strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and mine warfare.

Colorado is a part of the Virginia-class’ third, or Block III, contract, in which the Navy redesigned approximately 20 percent of the ship to reduce acquisition costs. Colorado features a redesigned bow, which replaces 12 individual Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes with two large-diameter Virginia Payload Tubes (VPTs), each capable of launching six Tomahawk cruise missiles, among other design changes that reduced the submarines’ acquisition cost while maintaining their outstanding war-fighting capabilities.

Colorado also has special features to support Special Forces, including a reconfigurable torpedo room, which can accommodate a large number of personnel and all their equipment for

prolonged deployments and future off-board payloads. Also, in Virginia-class SSNs, traditional periscopes have been replaced by two photonics masts that host visible and infrared digital cameras atop telescoping arms, which are maneuvered by a video game controller. Through the extensive use of modular construction, open architecture and commercial off-the-shelf components, the Virginia class is designed to remain at the cutting edge for its entire operational life through the rapid introduction of new systems and payloads.

SSN 788 was built at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut and is 7,800 tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet and operates at more than 25 knots submerged. It is designed with a nuclear reactor plant that does not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time.

The submarine Colorado is the fourth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the Colorado name. The first USS Colorado (Screw Frigate) was named after the Colorado River, the second USS Colorado (AC 7) was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1905, and the third USS Colorado (BB 45) was the lead ship of its class and was commissioned in 1923.

ard sale season is here. I can’t wait to spend the change I’ve been saving all winter to purchase stuff I don’t need and will most likely never use.

If you’re like me, you rarely leave a garage sale empty handed. The thrill of rummaging through junk belonging to strangers is too magical to resist. There’s always the possibility of finding a lid for the sugar bowl I lost five years ago or a matching slipper to replace the one Rover chewed up last week.

Sometimes people find treasures. A lost Renoir might be discovered hiding behind a cheap dime store print or a secret stash of forgotten $50 bills found rolled inside a teapot. But the chances of such good luck are rare.

I remember the days when yard sales were unheard of because people never sold, threw or gave away anything. Regardless of an object’s value, it was stored in the attic, basement or an outdoor shed.

Men were as thrifty as their wives.

The backyard was often the resting place for rusty cars, piles of tires and stacks of used lumber. The fields around the barn were the only places large enough to hold worn out hay balers, toothless rakes, broken mowers, enormous canvas tarps, old wooden seeders and heaps of coiled barbed wire.

Every farmer had a hoard of iron from bits and pieces of broken machinery. Tradition and economic circumstances dictated frugality in all areas, whether it was the house or the barn. Everything stayed put because you never knew when you might need it, and there was no running to Walmart for a bit of string or a bag of 16-penny nails.

I look forward to the weekly treasure hunt, not because I need something, but because the thrill is too strong to resist.

Dishes are my weakness. One day, I

came across a box of dishes made in Bavaria. I went home and unpacked my china. There were dinner plates and varying amounts of cups, saucers, soup bowls, dessert bowls and serving pieces. I’d hit the jackpot. I searched eBay until I had a complete service for 14.

I live alone and never invite anyone to dinner, so why would I collect so many dishes? Was I planning a party?

Who would I invite? I don’t even know 13 people who would accept my invitation. Even if I did, my place is small—where would I seat guests?

As I carefully wrapped the pieces and repacked them in a large, sturdy box, I wrote short notes explaining my reasons for the purchase.

Some notes said I hoped my daughter, Stephanie, used them. Others said my nieces could divvy them up if Stephanie didn’t want them. One note said I bought them because collecting dishes is my hobby. The real reason I wrote on the last card and put it in the bottom of the box.

“I collect pretty things to leave to the people I love. Although you never had time to get to know me, maybe these dishes or my collections of Stiffel lamps and ceramic chickens will give you a peek into my world.

I always hoped I could share them with you, but you were busy with your own lives, and that’s okay.”

When I’m gone, I hope Stephanie will actually look through my stuff instead of dropping it off at Goodwill without a second glance. We never know, do we, what will become of our prized possessions. I guess it really doesn’t matter.

Do we ever question why we love garage sales? Do we ever wonder what it is we’re really searching for?

Maybe the answer is as simple as frequenting such sales is a pleasant way to pass a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe that’s all there is to it. I hope so, because searching for something intangible will never be found in someone else’s belongings.

It’s right there in our own heart, and it’s not for sale at any price. ■

Even the free-market Heritage Foundation has stated those Jones Act/US vessel operators serving Puerto Rico following Maria did a ‘commendable’ job in their response to the catastrophe.”
