Frightening statistics tell spooky tales Speaking of wise...

esa County has every reason to be scared, but it’s not because Halloween is on the horizon—our already high suicide rates are climbing.

According to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office’s most recent report, about one-third of deaths by suicides in 2016 were those of people age 50 and older. Among all 2016 suicide victims, depression was high on the list of possible stressors precipitating the act, and families and friends reported that almost two-thirds of the decedents did not seek any mental health services.

This is a tough topic, but we feel it’s an important one to address.

Please read on for stories of survivorship in this month’s issue, as well as resources for those suffering from depression or grief.

Traveling with purpose: Local couple combines travel with exploring family history

O

ver the course of their 40-year marriage, John Rodwick, 77, and his wife, Jean, 79, have traveled extensively, crisscrossing the U.S. and the globe on amazing adventures.

They both grew up loving to learn and explore, but certain journeys have taken on a special significance: The Rodwicks have traveled the world hoping to learn more about the people responsible for bringing them into it.

Discovering roots

Family history has always been important to the Rodwicks, but their interest in genealogy resurfaced about 30 years ago with the PBS mini-series, “Roots.”

“Jean had already been doing [genealogy] research for 20 years, but that added fuel to the fire,” John said.

“This is how we have discovered relatives we never knew existed.”

Jean traced her family back to the 1600s, and John’s back to the 1700s.

An interest in these forebears has taken the two of them around the world, where they connected with genealogy experts and explored

courthouses, city halls, churches, museums and cemeteries. They’ve even met relatives along the way.

“Jean and I are both related to second cousins who were PGA hall-offamers,” John said.

Jean is related to Byron Nelson, a legendary golfer in the first half of the 20th century who retired early and became a rancher.

“One of my relatives, Eddie Merrins, was one of Tiger Woods’ teachers. We got an invitation to Eddie’s installation into the Hall of Fame down in Florida. It was a remarkable experience for us. Plus, it brought in other family members who were golf aficionados who had never met Eddie before. They set up times to play golf together.”

That connection is one of the reasons the Rodwicks find genealogy intriguing.

“It’s the history,” John said. “It’s the people.”

The right way to research Traveling has been the Rodwicks’ best method of research, as it enables them to gather information firsthand by checking town records, photographing tombstones, talking with neighbors and exploring relevant places and territories.

“Travel stimulates an understanding and appreciation of our past,” said John. “We have a passion for history and travel, and family.”

In the U.S., Jean’s family history is rooted primarily in Texas and Missouri; John’s is in New York City.

“Some of Jean’s relatives go back to the time of the Pilgrims, so we’ve spent a lot of time on the East Coast,” John said. “We wanted to know where they landed and we found it.”

The Rodwicks have gone even farther to find their families’ stories.

John’s father emigrated from Croatia, so they traveled there and found the home where his father was raised.

Sometimes research leads the Rodwicks straight to what they’re looking for, but it’s not always so simple.

On one trip to Ireland, they were searching for family on John’s mother’s side—the Merrins—but didn’t find anyone with that surname in the area. It wasn’t until they returned home that they discovered that many Merrins intermarried over the last few generations and now go by Fitzgerald.

“We were a mile away, but didn’t know it until we got home. Jean uploaded the information to our website and someone in Ireland happened to get in touch with us,” John

said. “That’s the kind of stuff that happens in genealogical travels.”

Strong research skills are vital when planning their trips. The Rodwicks use historical records and consult maps, old and new.

While genealogy websites like www.ancestry.com provide a good starting point for research, Jean warned not to rely solely on others’ information.

“You need to check their work,” she said. “There’s a lot of misinformation that gets done and it proliferates.”

The Rodwicks hire genealogy experts in the cities and regions they visit to do preliminary research before they plan their trips. Jean occasionally finds someone in local records offices who is willing do some initial investigating for free.

What’s your story?

John believes that everyone’s family has something special in its background and knowing one’s origins can help people feel whole.

“We’re relational people. We were never meant to be loners,” John said.

“That’s what genealogy does—it puts us in contact with those who we’re most closely connected to.”

Learning about his family and listening to stories growing up helped shape John’s future.

“All my relatives were professionals—they were doctors and lawyers,” he said. “When you’re in that kind

of milieu, [your genealogy] says, ‘Well, are you going to come up to the plate or not?’” he said.

He lived up to his ancestors by obtaining doctorates in psychology and management. Jean also has doctorates in reading and special education.

“Learning has always been part of our lives and our travels,” John said.

Jean has five published books on their family’s genealogy in the Library of Congress. One clocks in at more than 1,000 pages.

“This allows us to hand over what we’ve discovered to the next generation so they have a story,” John said.

Jean has reached a standstill in her genealogical research due to a lack of records, but even though she’s done researching their families’ pasts, she is always adding information about new generations.

“We usually touch base [with family] at Christmas,” she said. “Everyone’s willing to help. When someone has a baby, I like to get that information.”

John said he’s surprised when he gets a blank stare from people when he asks if they know about their family history.

“We are not just here today, we are connected to history,” he said. “Most people only see the immediate present and don’t look beyond that. Your story has many more chapters than just the one you’re living.” ■

Gray Gourmet in a pickle: County can’t stomach meal service Story and photos by Jan Weeks

esa County’s elderly population depends on Gray Gourmet, a program that has prepared and delivered nutritious meals to seniors for decades. Talk to anyone involved and all you’ll find is enthusiasm for the service. Unfortunately, the program is in danger of being kicked out of the building that was built specifically for it, and that has housed the program for 35 years.

The commercial kitchen at 551 Chipeta Ave. has been the sole tenant during that time, preparing dishes for Meals on Wheels and Gray Gourmet. The two programs deliver more than 119,000 meals a year to several distribution centers and homebound seniors.

The center started in 1982 under the auspices of Mesa County, paid for by federal and state grants. In 1989, the county could no longer afford to fund the operation and St. Mary’s Medical Center took over.

“Since that time, St. Mary’s has paid the soft costs, such as labor, benefits and minor maintenance, and the county has provided the building,” said St. Mary’s Marketing Director Teri Cavanaugh.

But last spring, the county decided

to fill the space with a tenant that would pay fair market value to rent the building. St. Mary’s was put on notice that its lease would not be renewed when it expired in June. In a twist of fate, the prospective nonprofit that was going to rent the building reneged on its offer, leaving Gray Gourmet paying the market rental price—more than $3,300 a month, up from about $250 per year.

A safety net for seniors Amanda deBock, Gray Gourmet’s program manager, said the service is vital to the wellbeing of Mesa County’s elderly population.

“Meals on Wheels offers daily checks on homebound seniors, and sometimes our volunteer drivers are the only people they see all day,” she said. “Our drivers become their friends, and if they notice unusual behaviors or circumstances, they can contact emergency personnel or family members.”

One 90-year-old woman’s family went out of town for a week. After her lunch delivery, she fell and couldn’t get up. The drivers found her the next day and called for help.

“If it hadn’t been for them, she would have died,” deBock said.

“No one would have been there for

a week.”

The program is also mandated by law to report abuse or suspected abuse, another vital safety net for at-risk adults.

Gray Gourmet delivers bulk meals to distribution centers every weekday, including Ratekin Towers and the Grand Junction Senior Center. Volunteers dish up and serve the lunches.

Helen Wade, 74, and Carol Steed, 80, come to the senior center almost every day for lunch with their husbands. They donate money for the food, although it’s not required. The meal helps them meet their daily nutrition requirements.

“I don’t have to worry about it in the evening,” Wade said. “I can just have something light.”

The diners love the food, but say the social factor is just as important.

Steed comes to “enjoy the fellowship.”

“If we didn’t have this, we’d have to start cooking again!” she said, laughing.

When their husbands can’t attend lunch, volunteers make plates for the women to take home.

“I get tired of my own cooking,” he said, grinning. “If this program was

to be discontinued, a lot of people wouldn’t come here to meet. The food is almost an added attraction.”

José Gallegos, 66, has ridden his bicycle to the center almost every day for two years, for both the food and the people.

“Without this program, I’d be lost,” he said. “Coming here gives me a purpose.”

Staying put and standing firm Cavanaugh backs Gray Gourmet’s nutrition programs 100 percent.

“Gray Gourmet is a stable, reliable community asset,” she said. “We cannot—we should not—threaten the program in any way, and despite the fact that similar programs across the nation are operated by local governments, St. Mary’s is willing to take on the entire cost of the program.”

DeBock said that the program will continue to be funded, but that every dollar paid out for rent is money that can’t be spent on food and associated services.

St. Mary’s President Dr. Brian Davidson said the hospital has looked at other options, but only after the county refused to renew the lease.

“We offered to buy the building for a nominal amount, but not at market value” because construction was paid for by grants and private donations, he said. “The county said they aren’t interested. They want to use it as a

revenue source.”

The logistics of moving the program to a different space are staggering. Due to numerous routes, 18 cars must have room to be loaded at the same time. Then there’s the kitchen space.

“It would be difficult to find another kitchen on short notice without substantial disruption to 500 meals a day,” Davidson said.

Since many of the volunteers are seniors, staff members are also concerned about how far they would have to walk to load the meals into cars.

“We would probably lose a lot of our volunteers,” Davidson said.

The program is almost self-sustaining, and Davidson stressed that St. Mary’s needs time to decide what to do.

“We are the glue that holds it together. We have to keep it going regardless of where it’s located,” he said.

So far, the county has not given Gray Gourmet a lease, so it continues on a month-to-month rental basis at market value. Davidson hopes that the county will accept St. Mary’s offer and give the program a long-term lease.

Thanks to the good Gray Gourmet has done for the community, many of its supporters hope the same. ■

Ingredients: Dressing:

Steak Salad:

1 large avocado

2 heads of leafy greens, chopped

1 garlic clove, roughly chopped

2 cups roasted corn

1/4 cup cilantro, roughly chopped

2 roasted bell peppers, chopped

1 tbsp fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)

1 medium cucumber, chopped

1/4 cup Greek yogurt

2/3 cup chopped red onion

1/2 cup low-fat milk (or buttermilk);

1/2 cup queso fresco, crumbled

1/4 tsp salt

2 medium avocados, cubed

1/4 tsp pepper

1 lb carne asada, chopped

Pinch of cumin / pinch of cayenne

2 tbsp toasted pine nuts

Instructions: CREAMY AVOCADO DRESSING: In a food processor, add all the dressing ingredients but the milk.

On medium speed, blend all the ingredients and slowly add the milk to reach desired consistency.

Remove, place in a covered container and keep chilled.

STEAK SALAD: Clean and chop the lettuce greens and dry thoroughly.

Mix the dressing and the lettuce greens together until well coated.

Toss the steak, corn, cucumbers, peppers, onion and avocado with the dressed greens.

Add the crumbled queso fresco to the top. Serve and enjoy.

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick Dear Old Bag: My family and friends chastise me because I don’t beat around the bush. I don’t believe in overlooking things and smoothing over a situation that I feel needs to be dealt with. I admit it has lost me a few friends, but I maintain they were not my friends in the first place. The other day I told off a grocery clerk because I thought she was rude to the customer in front of me. Should I have kept my mouth shut? Or is honesty best?

Signed, BT Dear BT: I wish I knew more about just how you told off the grocery store clerk. Did you say, “Pardon me, I was a little surprised how you treated that customer”? Or did you attack her and say, “You should be fired for talking to a customer that way”? There is such a thing as objecting politely without attacking. There’s a difference between being assertive and being aggressive. My strategy is to stick to my business unless someone is in danger and I need to intervene.

After all, no one has appointed me queen yet. OB Dear Old Bag: Last month you received a letter from a guy who decided to move into a retirement community.

I’m 62, and recently, my wife and I moved into a second-stage retirement community. Our friends thought we were crazy. We were living here one month when my wife had a severe stroke. She now resides in our wonderful skilled health center, while I live independently in our apartment. I visit her every day and occasionally wheel her up to our apartment for a visit. I shudder to think how it would’ve been if we had been living in our house. I have received so much support from

Patsy Cline and the 3 Redneck Tenors come to Grand Junction

Y

ou don’t have to drive to Denver to experience world-class music.

In fact, you don’t even have to drive any farther than Grand Junction High School.

Community Concerts of the Grand Valley (CCGV) brings some of the world’s finest acts to Grand Junction.

The 2017-18 season kicks off on September 9 with Mandy Barnett singing some of Patsy Cline’s greatest hits.

On October 5, the 3 Redneck Tenors take the stage for some down-home laughs and big city music.

Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Kelly Anderson knows what it’s like to don cutoff shorts and a tuxedo in the same performance, as he was one of the original three Redneck Tenors.

The group was the brainchild of Matthew Lord, Anderson’s friend and singing colleague. The combination of superior opera singing and redneck humor introduces audiences to different styles of singing and comedy.

“The show was actually based on the idea of the original three tenors of Domingo, Pavarotti and Jose Carreras,” Anderson said.

To help with the harmonies, the group actually uses two tenors and a baritone, which makes the harmonies easier and adds variety to the sound.

Due to his busy schedule, however, Anderson was unable to commit to a long-term project and only performed as a Redneck Tenor for the preview concert in Grapevine, Texas.

“I enjoyed my time working on the original project,” he said. “It was great to sing formally while dressing in cut-off T-shirts and wearing a mullet wig. [It] was a unique and fun experience to be a part of in my career.”

Ketamine: a cutting-edge treatment for depression, PTSD

F

orty million Americans—or one in five adults—have a mental health condition, according to Mental Health America. Within that number, nearly 16 million people suffer from depression and more than seven million are affected by PTSD. The two conditions tend to go hand in hand, as those who suffer from PTSD often experience depression as well.

Nearly twice as many women suffer from depression than men. Even though PTSD is mostly associated with male soldiers coming back from war, it can be a result of traumatic events, such as car accidents or sexual assaults. PTSD is something that men and women must deal with, and it occurs twice as much in women according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

While there are dozens of medications to treat depression and PTSD, most merely cover up the problem.

“Many medications work on the assumption that you don’t have enough serotonin in your brain,” said Dr. Steven Levine, a psychiatrist and founder of Ketamine Treatment Centers. “If you replace enough of these feel-good hormones, you will feel better.”

Levine, an expert in the clinical use of ketamine for mood and anxiety disorders, treats patients who suffer from depression and PTSD by helping them repair damaged con-

nections in the brain by using periodic ketamine infusions in small doses.

Developed in 1962, ketamine was originally used as an anesthetic, but quickly found its way onto the streets as a recreational drug, taking on the name Special K. It has also been used as a tranquilizer for animals.

It’s still considered one of the safest anesthetics around, but with repeated infusions, the long-term effects on the brain are still unknown.

“Those who may be at risk of cognitive damage are people who abuse it daily or multiple times a week in high doses,” said Levine.

Most of his patients receive an infusion once a month and go through

traditional talk therapy.

“The results have been amazing,” said Levine. “In some cases, ketamine has started to alleviate patients’ symptoms after one infusion. Most anti-depressants can take weeks or months to start working.”

Extensive ketamine research reveals a 75 percent success rate for the treatment.

A recent study at Columbia University found that ketamine infusions given in a vaccine-like fashion to those embarking upon an environment likely to cause significant stressors, such as soldiers entering a battle or aid workers going to a disaster area, prevented or reduced PTSD symptoms.

“Depression and PTSD can cause a lot of pain in people’s lives,” said Levine. “I don’t think of ketamine as a magic bullet—it’s a tool. I want patients to eventually feel like they are sailing on their own and ketamine is merely there as a backup.”

Her name was Grandpa

H

ow do you love a child? How do you become the memory that makes someone smile forever? Does your life exemplify your good beliefs and encourage children to follow you?

There is no better honor than to answer the latter than with a “yes.”

The greatest gift we have as adults is children. It doesn’t matter if we are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or a friend of a child. To love a child and have them return that love is the blessing that is beyond all the riches in the world.

Many years ago, my brother John, who was about 3 at the time, was watching his favorite grandmother make biscuits. He watched as the flour hit the dough board and dusted the air. She laughed as the white powder settled on his eyelashes.

John had trouble calling her “Grandma” because he had five other grandmothers—two great-great-grandmothers, two great-grandmothers and another grandmother. They all lived in the same town, which made it even more confusing. Out of all those grandmothers, he only had one living grandfather.

But he came up with a solution.

His brown eyes opened wide as he tugged his grandmother’s apron.

“You gonna be Grandpa!” he said.

“John, I am Grandma and he is your Granddaddy,” she replied, pointing to her husband.

“You Grandpa and he Granddaddy!” he stated again as he walked away.

From that moment on, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren would forever call her “Grandpa,” a name representing an unconditional love that allowed her to be called whatever these children wanted to call her.

There was nothing Grandpa loved more than children. Even when she had a full house, she would play games with us, fish with us and stay up past her bedtime to tell us stories.

When she played or talked with us, she became our age. She even let us

play with the wrinkles on her hand and make fun of her false teeth. She laughed at herself and was never embarrassed by any of us.

We all stayed with Grandpa many times in our lives. She told us she loved us and she showed it in so many ways. I remember her garden blooming with white gladiolas that reached up to the sun. She always wanted white because they were pure and heavenly. She taught us that out of dirt, toil and care comes beauty. She made sure she had everyone’s favorite food in the house. She cooked until her old apron was soiled and dark.

She taught us that in someone’s eyes each of us were special.

I’ve never met anyone like Grandpa.

It’s hard for me to write all that she was and did in her 97 years on earth.

I could fill a book with words and stories about this remarkable, kind human being.

Her laughter fills my heart today.

Her hands calm my soul and lift me up. Her spirit still wraps me in love and comfort.

We bring children into our world hoping they will be perfect and wonderful. But we also need to honor that gift by being wonderful and perfect for them. To make a child feel special, we need them to feel like we would rather be with them than anyone else.

Years ago, I couldn’t decide what to give Grandpa for Christmas.

I decided to write a story about her and send it to her county paper in Tennessee. The newspaper printed the story in its entirety on the whole second page of the paper. The title in bold lettering was, “MERRY CHRISTMAS, GRANDPA!” The name my brother gave her all those years ago was now a bold headline.

“And her children will arise up and call her blessed,” were the words on a cross stitched sampler hanging above Grandpa’s bed when she left this earth. No truer words were ever written. ■

he child/parent relationship is a constantly moving dynamic.

When you were small, they cared for your needs. As you grew into adolescence they worried over you while trying to get you ready for independence. As you launched into the world beyond their home, they let you go, perhaps with tears, perhaps with a sigh of relief. But as time passes and they grow older, the burden of care can shift, this time to the child.

This process is fraught with emotion on both sides. Meanwhile, difficult decisions must be made to ensure the ongoing care and wellbeing of parents as they age.

Tarja Williams is facing such a change, having been the primary caregiver for her mother for the past several years.

“I’m the only child who has that kind of relationship with her, so she has followed me each time my family has moved,” she said. “I have taught myself how to acquire benefits for her. The situation has progressively changed in the amount of assistance she’s needed since her first stroke seven years ago. For a while, Mom was in her own apartment with inhome care three to four hours a day

to make sure she was fed and clean.

After her second stroke, she needed care 24/7. She’s been living with me for the last year and a half, but now we are looking to transition her into a care facility.”

Williams has run the gamut of the available options for her mother over the past few years, which has necessitated an ongoing discussion about needs, along with the examination of financial resources to determine how to best use them.

Aging in place There are a number of options that will allow aging parents to remain in their own home as they age.

Diana Reed, owner of MLS Senior Care Agency in Grand Junction, said, “Sometimes, if they live on their own, they need companionship or help getting out to do errands, maybe light housekeeping and cooking, maybe help getting bathed and dressed. This is considered unskilled home care. In some cases, caregivers—often the child or spouse—just need a break for a few hours. In other cases, they may need to go to work but don’t want their parent alone all day. We come in once or twice during the day to make sure the client is fed, can get to the bathroom,

or even to just sit and talk. I can hear the same stories over and over and not get impatient with them.”

If skilled nursing care is needed, Reed’s agency will work with nurses, letting them know anything they observe and following up on their instructions. This way, the clients receive the skilled nursing care they need, along with unskilled care.

When choosing to stay at home, it’s important to keep home safety in mind.

“We check the home for things like throw rugs and how long the house key has been under the mat outside,” said Reed.

Assisted living Once in-home care is no longer meeting an aging parent’s needs, the next step is assisted living. In Grand Junction, Hilltop provides a continuum of care, from individual cottages to assisted options for residents who require greater amounts of care.

“Once they are unable to manage the activities of daily living, including their medications, they would be transitioned to the main building,” said Meghan Nedvecki, assistant director of The Commons of Hilltop. “Medical services and meals are provided there, with higher staffing ratios. They can still go out on activities, but we are more involved in their daily care.”

The importance of family Even when a parent is in a facility, his or her children are critical to the wellbeing of their aging parents.

“Both of my parents are in memory care,” said Barb Napoletano. “It still takes so much time, even in a full-

care facility. [One of my mother’s children] is there every day or every other day. The caregivers are angels, but she needs family to stay on top of things. It’s difficult watching her decline, but at least all of my siblings have been very supportive of each other. The nurses tell us our family is unusual in how well we work together on my mom’s care.”

Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Williams’ family.

“My siblings are uninvolved,” she said. “It’s not easy to talk to them about Mom’s care. It’s all tied up in stepfamily issues and inheritance and other complications.”

Williams wants to preserve her mother’s dignity while she contemplates the next step in her care.

“She said she didn’t feel like an old person and didn’t want to hang out with old people. We have to do something, though, to ease the stress for my husband and me. Putting her in a facility feels like giving up, but we are older and more exhausted,” she said.

Working in concert with a caregiving agency, skilled nursing care and assisted living staff can ease the stressful decisions regarding care of aging parents.

“Be mindful of changing needs and stay open to adjustments,” said Reed.

While caring for aging parents will take time and commitment, it can also be rewarding to those who lovingly navigate the difficult decisions, allowing aging parents to retain their dignity with as much independence as possible, each step of the way. ■

As we begin to pull plants out of the garden, we leave behind areas of bare soil. Cover crops protect soil through the winter like a wool sweater. They add organic matter, help prevent erosion and compaction, and suppress weeds.

Choosing cover crops depends on your goals. There are two kinds to consider: winter-killed and winter-hardy.

Winter-killed cover crops grow rapidly, then die back after a few hard frosts.

They add organic matter to the soil and hold it in place until spring. Winterhardy crops stay alive through winter and thrive again in the spring. They can extend your growing season, increase soil fertility and provide a living mulch for your garden beds.

Endless possibilities Our climate enables us to explore both types of cover crops.

Two common perennial crops are hairy vetch and clover, which can outcompete weeds. Deep roots loosen compacted soils, adding nitrogen, too.

Annual options for winter-killed crops

include oats, buckwheat and radishes.

You can use multiple winter-killed crops and even mix them with some hardy crops for a range of effects. By sowing a mixture of seeds, you’ll learn about your garden’s needs directly from the soil itself.

You can even mix in an edible crop like arugula that will survive winter and provide you with delicious greens. Sow it this month alongside cover crops or on its own in a healthy patch of soil.

Arugula doesn’t mind being under a blanket of snow—you can even harvest some greens through winter. In the spring, it will flourish as everything else comes back to life.

Connecting fall to spring with cover crops is an excellent and easy way to bring your garden full circle. ■

Feng shui is based on three universal concepts: Everything is alive. Even inorganic objects possess the ability to influence us in some way. For example, a metal sculpture may seem inert but is alive because it is made of organic material and because of the energy of the artist in its creation.

Everything is interconnected.

Our physical surroundings are a direct reflection of our inner belief systems about ourselves and our lives.

Exploring this principle can lead to powerful change.

Everything is changing. Physics tells us that everything is in motion.

As we learn to embrace change, rather than resist it, our lives become connected to the natural synchronicity and flow of the universe.

When considering a space, feng shui design consultants consider the principles of safety, clutter and the creation of environmental affirmations.

The real crux of the clutter issue lies in how to tackle it effectively.

It can require working through the mental programs that keep us attached to what we don’t want or need in order to make room for what serves us today. This can take time, but is the most powerful first step in getting energy moving in our lives.

Feng shui also applies the concept of clutter to health. Chinese medicine uses a basic metaphor of five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—to assess patient health.

To treat a long-standing health condition, we must clear out older, deeper impediments to health to give our bodies the best possible chance of using the nutrition and lifestyle habits we’ve adopted later in life. Space is assessed in much the same way as in feng shui design.

Our subconscious is aware of these things even if we’re not. It registers sharp objects as weapons, so feng shui encourages being aware of these shapes and softening or eliminating them from one’s space or landscape to reduce stress.

Environmental affirmations are the final placement of color, furnishings and décor that we consider when designing a space. These choices influence anyone who spends time there.

We breathe and move freely in open spaces. We feel safe in warm, nurturing, inviting environments.

Balancing these two extremes is the goal of feng shui design. ■

Soak in the changes at the Ouray Hot Springs Pool

T

he Ouray Hot Springs Pool has been a fixture of western Colorado for generations. Since it first opened on July 4, 1927, countless visitors have enjoyed its gorgeous views and soothing, geothermal waters. The pool recently celebrated its 90th birthday, and the City of Ouray commemorated the occasion by completing a comprehensive remodel of the facility.

Pool Manager Tom Kavanaugh explained that by the early 2000s, the pool was starting to show its age.

Ouray formed a Pool Improvement Committee in 2012 to identify how to best improve the complex and ensure the hot springs would be around to benefit future generations.

“We had a wide array of opinions that helped us develop a comprehensive plan,” Kavanaugh said.

Using the committee’s ideas, the city adopted a master plan in 2015, and in October of 2016, the multimillion-dollar renovation project commenced.

“It’s been quite an exhausting process,” Kavanaugh admitted. “But it’s well worth it.”

He has managed the hot springs for

seven years, and has been involved in every step of the renovation process, from its early stages to seeing the dream come to fruition.

Different soaks for different folks The hot springs’ remodel includes something for everyone. Notable improvements include more bench space and pool edges, and more curves with coves and peninsulas.

Kavanaugh explained that the pools’ curving edges enable visitors to enjoy a more private experience.

“When you’re in a large, rectangular pool, you feel like you’re having a conversation with everyone around you. [The curved pools] allow couples or small groups to feel like they have their own private space,” he said.

Other helpful additions to the facility are increased shaded areas and more accessibility options. Three of the pools have ramps that are ADA-compliant. The lap pool has a lift chair, the overlook geothermal pool has a transfer wall, and there is a submersible handicap chair available as well. Facility staff members are happy to help anyone who needs assistance.

The remodel creates a welcoming atmosphere for both active visitors and those who want a more relaxed experience.

“We’ve struggled in the past with catering to the traditional hot springs ‘soaker,’’’ Kavanaugh said.

Before the remodel, the soaking pool was in proximity to the water slide area. Now, these noisier areas and the soaking pool are on opposite sides of the complex. Soakers can relax serenely, apart from the hubbub of the play area.

Kavanaugh said that though the Ouray Hot Springs Pool will always be a family pool, it’s important to have something for everyone to enjoy.

A family destination The hot springs has a long history as a destination for family fun. Delta’s Darla Volgamore, 64, has “warm and fuzzy memories” of her time at the pool.

Volgamore’s parents owned the A&W drive-in south of Delta from 1959-1972. Her dad closed the restaurant one day every summer and treated his family—and their A&W family—to a day in Ouray.

“We’d caravan up there. It was like a family outing for anybody who worked there and their families. We’d have a picnic at Box Canyon, and then we’d spend the day at the hot springs,” Volgamore recalled.

Montrose resident Sandra Scott grew up in Paonia and would vacation in Ouray every summer with her family.

“I don’t think we have ever missed a summer,” she said. “Though we did not always agree on many things, spending time in Ouray was something that we all agreed upon unanimously. These memories are so dear to my heart.”

Laureen Kraft, 57, also loves Ouray and the hot springs. She and her husband have lived in Ridgway full time since 2009. Now they visit the hot springs at least three times weekly.

As a pool member, she is excited about the renovation.

“I think [the new facility] draws you in more, with the bluer waters, and there’s a lot more for the kids,” she said. “Plus, they can keep the water temperatures where they want them.”

That’s important to Kraft, a yearround swimmer. Last winter, she and her friends braved low water temperatures by wearing wetsuits to swim the lap lanes. Then they’d jump into the soaking pool to relax and warm up.

She also enjoys the community-building aspect of the pool.

“You meet people from everywhere,” she said. “While you’re sitting there in the soaker, you end up talking to people and finding out where they’re from. The people are great. [The Hot Springs] is just such a draw to the area.” ■

id you know that Fruita’s apples used to be as popular as Palisade’s peaches are today, and were shipped around the country—even to Paris?

Or that one night in the 19th century, Fruita’s fledgling post office suddenly disappeared overnight, carted off by supporters of a competing neighboring town?

Did you know that a public, interurban railway system used to connect Grand Junction and Fruita, transporting students and orchard harvests alike? It’s all true, and you can learn about these stories and more in the Lower Valley Heritage Room (LVHR).

A historical treasure The LVHR is housed in the Fruita Civic Center, a building that plays an important role in the town’s heritage.

Previously Central Grade School, it was condemned by the school district and slated to be torn down.

A handful of farmers warned civic leaders that they would meet anyone coming to tear down the building at the doorsteps—shotguns in hand.

Incredibly, the ploy worked and the building was saved. It’s now home

to offices for the City of Fruita and a precious window into the city’s history.

The caretaker of that room, Yvonne Peterson, is passionate about Fruita’s past. It was at her request that the former sixth grade classroom be preserved, with the squeaky wood floors and blackboards left untouched—another special piece of history.

She laid the groundwork for this “poor man’s museum” after serving on a committee organizing the 100year reunion of Fruita’s high school.

The committee had $4,000 left over after the reunion and wasn’t sure how to use the surplus. Peterson enjoyed hearing locals reminisce about Fruita’s history during the celebration and wanted a place to house those stories. At her urging, the committee used part of the money to archive memories from locals and create the Lower Valley Heritage Room.

Established in 1993, the museum is accessible to all people interested in local history as told by the people who lived it.

“Everything in this room can be copied,” Peterson said. “Anybody can come in and look through whatever they want.”

Settlers’ tales The collection includes work by Renaissance man William E. Pabor, the founder of Fruita.

Pabor played a role in establishing many Front Range towns, including Greeley, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. He’s also responsible for planting the hundreds of fruit trees that make Fruita, well… Fruita. His poetry and more information about his life can be found in the LVHR. Also inside, visitors will find histories of local lodges, including the

Masons, Eastern Stars, Rebekahs, Odd Fellows, Rainbows and more.

The LVHR boasts a large collection of Fruita phone books, a disappearing part of history, and the only record of the city’s former street names and numbers, which changed in 1974 and are vital for residents looking into the histories of their homes.

The museum is packed with quirky stories about the town’s founding, including Pabor’s troubles with Frank and Ben Kiefer, brothers who established the competing town of Cleveland east of his proposed townsite.

He and the Kiefers were in a race to get paperwork completed to establish their town first, and Fruita’s post office was a major step forward. But one morning, Fruita residents awoke to find that the office had vanished, steps and all.

Industrious Cleveland supporters had hitched up a team of horses and dragged the post office to their town in the night. Postal officials were not pleased and ordered the building returned to its original location. Pabor won the paperwork race in 1884.

Cleveland eventually became a town, too, but was incorporated by Fruita in 1905.

Preserving the past The collection has taken decades to put together. For 20 years, Peterson has managed every piece of family, business and town history that has come through the door. She lugs home three or four boxes a week to sort through the memories inside.

Building a community, little by little

hey pop up everywhere—in front yards, on corners, in subdivisions.

These miniature structures hold books, books and more books, and the contents are always changing.

They’re Little Free Libraries (LFLs), the brainchild of Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin.

In 2009, Hudson built one to look like a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former teacher who loved to read. He put it on a post in his front yard, filled it with books and never dreamed that the

initiative would one day result in an international nonprofit organization, Little Free Library. A few years later, there are more than 50,000 LFLs registered in the U.S. and 70 other countries.

Every type of book for every type of reader The philosophy behind the libraries is “take a book, leave a book.”

Community members can donate used reading material and exchange it for books they’ve never read.

Through this process, millions of books are exchanged annually, and readers have 24/7 access they can’t find anywhere else.

LFLs come in all shapes: log cabins, Federal-style columned facades,



half-timber Tudor homes and chicken coops. A Fruita LFL, located on North Mulberry just east of Circle Park, is shaped like the teardrop campers its creator, Cullen Purser, manufactures.

Each library’s contents are as varied as the architectural styles of the libraries themselves. Danielle Steele novels rub dust covers with Eastern philosophical teachings. Bodice-ripping romance paperbacks stand next to plot-driven thrillers. Children’s picture books cuddle with how-to manuals.

Dianna Vera, a former school teacher and self-described book-fiend, set up a library in front of her Teco Street home. She hopes it will put more books in the hands of children, and has stocked her library with materials for all ages and reading levels.

“A couple of friends and I were at lunch and the Little Free Libraries came up in a discussion. We thought it would be great for The Vineyard,” Corbett said. “I did a lot of research online when I got home that day.”

books at the Fruita library, and her dream was to someday own a bookstore.

“I love to read, love books and love to promote literacy for all,” said Corbett. “Books take one so many places without leaving home, and the feel of a book in one’s hand is a great feeling of comfort, happiness and contentment.”

But she couldn’t just put up a box full of books and call it good. First she had to consult The Vineyard’s homeowners’ association (HOA).

“I asked the HOA for a budget for it and it was approved. Next we searched for a builder. A neighbor had a brother who was a cabinet maker, and he set us up with a great library cabinet, painted and installed,” Corbett said.

The Vineyard’s book collection was started with 112 donated books from an acquaintance of Corbett’s who lives in Delta. After a visit, she returned to the Redlands with hardback books, dust jackets intact. LFL stewards also haunt yard sales, asking those selling paperbacks to consider donating them to local LFLs instead.

She stamps each book with the Little Free Library’s insignia before adding them to the collection.

Library love Some stewards, including Corbett, put notebooks inside the libraries, encouraging borrowers to leave reviews of the books they put inside.

Corbett has collected several notes expressing gratitude for the little community library.

“I just love the little library,” reads one. “Thank you for putting it in.”

Another says, “I am reading more than I did before since you put this in.”

Books disseminate new and varied ideas, entertain and inform readers, instill and satisfy curiosity. Reading has been shown to relax people, keep our brains sharp, teach us empathy, help us sleep better and even ease symptoms of depression. Libraries build community. So brick-andmortar or perched on a post, what better reasons do you need to visit a library of any sort?

Locate a library near you There are 11 registered LFLs in the Grand Valley—seven in Grand Junction, three in Fruita and one in Palisade—according to the national organization’s website. There are many other LFLs in town, but some stewards have chosen to keep their locations private, while others haven’t been registered with the parent organization.

Starting a LFL is easy. Stewards can order freestanding libraries from the organization or build one on their own. Stewards can register their library for a one-time $40 fee, which assigns the library an official charter number and allows stewards to legally call their book exchange box a Little Free Library.

Literacy on the Glade

S

ometimes good things can spring from unpleasant situations. That’s how the Glade Park Book Barn came into existence. While not an official Little Free Library, the Book Barn is doing its part to build community, too.

A few short years after reopening, the Glade Park Elementary School once again closed its doors in 2013. A small storage building that had been donated to the school was offered to the community.

It was relocated next to the community center and began a second life as a small community library. The inside was painted, and shelves were built and labeled by Glade Park resident Jon Bilbo.

Joy Thyer, a volunteer with Mesa County’s Friends of the Library, spearheaded the effort and recruited Susan Bilbo, a former educator and volunteer at the school, to assist her.

The collection started with children’s books from the elementary school, as well as some titles from the Mesa County Library. Members from the community donated books, too.

As with the Little Free Libraries, the Book Barn policy is just to take what you like, read it and return it or bring another title. It’s a wonderful resource for a town that can often feel isolated.

“The Book Barn is great because many of the residents of Glade Park are retired and don’t make the daily drive to town anymore,” Thyer said.

The Glade Park Book Barn is open Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Finding love and generosity in Romania

W

hat do you do when you have no savings, are flat broke and starting a new job and you get a call to go to Romania for a month to give a series of seminars for the Lord?

You say yes, of course!

Total Member Involvement (TMI), an evangelistic organization of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, coordinated a movement to present seminars throughout the world in 2017, beginning in countries such as Romania, Ukraine and Moldova. The movement has spread to other countries throughout the year.

I began my trek to Romania earlier this year. All 250 participants met in Bucharest for our orientation before heading out in smaller groups to our assigned areas.

Though there was unrest at the time in the countries to which we were traveling, the Lord paved the way for safe travels and wonderful experiences. At orientation, we learned that some groups in Ukraine were encouraged to leave the country early due to escalating protests, but the people assigned to those areas prayed about it and decided to stay, trusting in God for protection.

My group of six flew into Cluj, Romania, then drove to the city of Bistrita, where we

would commute each day to our local congregations.

My assigned church was in a small village called Rustior in the mountains of the Transylvania district.

Each day our group would gather together to go over that evening’s presentation, then head back to our rooms to practice individually and pray. On Fridays, we’d cover three presentations—one for Friday night, the presentation for church service Sabbath morning and Saturday evening’s presentation.

Each evening, drivers would take us for a lovely, home-cooked meal before we went to our individual churches. We had many lively conversations and all became fast friends. Our driver, Alfred, decided that if I moved to Bistrita, I could get a job teaching English. He said he’d find me an affordable apartment and even look for a husband for me (though he did admit that finding someone taller than me in Romania might be a problem).

We soon found that God had placed each of us in the perfect congregation for our personalities.

We bonded with our congregations, and our love for the people and the country of Romania grew each day.

I found the Romanian people to be gracious, loving and generous.

Though they struggle economically, they were quick to give what they had out of love and appreciation toward us. They cooked meals for us that undoubtedly stretched already thin budgets and took time out of their busy days to come to meetings each night, even though local priests tried to discourage attendance.

One gentlemen in my congregation was struggling with cancer, but came most nights just to hear about the Lord. We met at his house one evening when he was unable to attend due to his illness, and we held hands and cried together as we prayed. Though he couldn’t understand a word I said, our shared tears conveyed my sorrow and love for him. The Lord gave him strength to attend the rest of the meetings after

that night.

I hoped to be a blessing to the Romanian people and came away blessed so much more in return. Somehow my meager budget stretched and my bills were paid on time. I purchased my plane ticket using my parents’ accumulated airline points.

My meals were provided and I did not go hungry. My new employer graciously did without me for a month and warmly welcomed me back.

I said goodbye to the wonderful friends I met in Romania with a sorrowful heart, and I’m still in awe of the love and generosity they extended to me. It sounds cliché, but I truly did leave a portion of my heart behind. Whether or not the Lord sees fit to send me back, I know I will always remember my time and friends far away in the mountains of Romania. ■

o you know the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web? Many people don’t.

The internet is the massive network of computers that allows you to use email, send pictures via your phone, and see who’s at the door from all the way across town, using that new video doorbell you keep seeing on the home shopping channel.

The World Wide Web is the collection of websites that you access by typing an address into the web browser of your device.

It’s acceptable to say, “I went on the internet to find out if giraffes can see in color.” But it’s more accurate to say that you did your research on the web.

Everything you do on the web is done via the internet, but not everything on the internet is done using the web.

Where does social media fit in?

Sometimes you’ll hear the argument that social media is the new World Wide Web, suggesting that Facebook is the preferred channel for information.

Rather than visiting www.beacon seniornews.com to read the news, for example, many people simply follow the BEACON Senior Newspaper on Facebook and let the news come to them. This is a totally acceptable way to get the news, but you don’t want to use social media as your only source for gathering information online.

Don’t limit yourself The biggest downside of using social media sites exclusively is that they only show you what they think you should see. If you follow The BEACON

on Facebook, you won’t get all of the paper’s updates. You’ll only see updates that Facebook thinks you will interact with.

It’s also important to remember that there are great sources for news, information and shopping that you’ll never find if you don’t go directly to sites like news.google.com or www.cnn.com.

But there are some things social media does better by design than the web ever could.

Social media’s advantages If you lose a pet and don’t post about it on a Facebook page designed to help find lost animals in your area, you miss out on the best possibility of reuniting with your furry friend.

The reason it’s so effective is because when you post your lost pet update, everyone in the group shares the post on their own Facebook pages, connecting with their friends. Suddenly you have a whole network of pet sleuths helping you.

Social media is also becoming the best place to sell your used items. Unlike sites like Craigslist, Facebook shows you the first and last name—and usually the face—of the person with whom you are dealing. It’s also becoming the best place on the web for job searches, business recommendations and even product reviews.

So the next time you hear someone say, “I don’t use social media because I don’t want to see what my friends ate for lunch,” explain to them that social media has as many practical uses—like videos of cats getting scared by cucumbers. ■

hether it’s a matter of comfort, appearance or safety, there are many medical procedures that you may want or need, but your health insurance won’t cover.

Laser eye surgery may fall into the want category for most people and it can be a hefty investment, with each eye costing several thousand dollars.

For those wanting to start a family, infertility treatments, which can cost over $10,000, may be closer to a need. Yet most states don’t require health insurance to cover treatments.

Considering the lasting impact that these and other procedures can have on your life, you may not want to seek out the least expensive option.

However, that doesn’t mean you should forego attempts to save altogether. From tax-advantaged accounts to comparison shopping doctors, there are many approaches to safely cutting costs.

• See if you could get a tax break.

Although tax breaks don’t lower a medical procedure’s price, tax deductions can decrease your taxable income, and by using a tax-advantaged account, you may be able to pay for some medical procedures with income-tax-free money.

• Take a medical expense tax deduction. If you itemize your tax deductions, you can get a deduction for your qualified medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income. Laser eye surgery may qualify. However, cosmetic surgery doesn’t unless it’s related to a congenital abnormality, disfiguring disease or an injury resulting from trauma or an accident.

• Use an employer-sponsored flexible spending account (FSA).

Some employers offer FSAs as an employee benefit. You can make tax-deductible contributions to the account each year and withdraw the money tax-free to pay for qualified medical expenses, including health insurance deductibles

and copayments. However, this approach could require planning, as you may forfeit remaining FSA money at the end of each year.

• Enroll in health insurance with a health savings account (HSA).

An HSA account is similar to an FSA in that you can contribute pre-tax money and withdraw funds to pay for eligible medical expenses taxfree. HSAs don’t have the use-it-orlose-it requirement, but to qualify for an HSA account, you need to enroll in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and can’t be eligible for Medicare.

• Ask your health insurance company about discounts. Even when a health insurance provider doesn’t cover a procedure, members may still be able to save money by going through their insurance.

For example, health insurance generally won’t cover the cost of laser eye surgery, but your provider may offer a 5 to 15 percent discount if you get the surgery at partner eye care centers.

Health insurance requirements can vary from one state to another. You should double check your benefits before assuming something isn’t covered.

Compare costs from different providers. Varying medical costs sometimes make headlines when patients find out that a $3,000 medical procedure at a hospital could cost several hundred at a nearby clinic. If it’s not an emergency, there are websites that you can use to comparison shop nearby medical centers and get estimated prices.

Some people also look for savings in other countries. Medical tourism is a growing industry, and millions of people travel outside their home countries seeking lower costs, higher-quality services, treatments that aren’t available at home, a relaxing environment to recover in or a combination of several of these factors. ■

Caught in a sticky mailbox scam Justin Lavelle shares best tips to avoid getting “stuck” in this scam.

A

re you familiar with the sticky mailbox scam? Unbeknownst to many of us, it’s popping up across the country.

Criminals put a thick, sticky substance on the lids of public mailboxes, so that when you slide your letter in, it gets stuck. After you walk off to go about your day, the thief snatches your letter from the mailbox.

What does the criminal do next?

They have a few options: • The thief steals your personal information to commit the devastating crime of identity theft.

• The thief steals the birthday money you’re sending to your grandson.

• The thief erases the name on the check you mailed (or thought you had mailed) and replaces it with his or her own name.

This crime first popped up in New

York. When a vigilant letter-mailer told the U.S. Postal Service about what happened to her, it changed the mailbox doors, forcing the criminals to move their scam to New Jersey.

But this isn’t the first time this scam has appeared. It happened in 2012 in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, among other locations.

The point is, it can potentially occur anywhere and at any time.

Prevent yourself from getting “stuck.”

• Don’t send cash by mail.

• Use your bank’s bill pay method instead of sending paper checks.

• Mail your letters inside the post office.

• Use mailboxes that have slots, not doors. The slots help prevent ac-

cess to the letters inside the box.

• If you must use a mailbox with a door, double check to see that your letter has gone down without getting stuck.

• Spread the word. The more people know about this sticky scam, the more we can prevent these criminals from making off with stolen information and money.

The mailbox scam shows us that we need to be aware of more than online scams—criminals are always devising new ways to scam people.

Always remember to be cautious when handling any form of personal information or money.

Somewhere, some way, a criminal is coming up with ways to snatch it from you. ■

Crossroads Fitness: a gym in good shape

or more than 30 years, Crossroads Fitness has offered locals a place to exercise and get fit. Besides programs for the young, the gym offers a lot for the young at heart.

Crossroads offers more than 300 group exercise classes, including small group training for three to five members that meet several times a week. The trainers design classes just for those students, who are held ac-

“Silver Sneaker classes include classic, cardio fit, yoga, circuit and a combo class,” said Paula Reece, Crossroads’ marketing director. “We also have dance-type classes such as Cardio Groove and Zumba Gold.”

Suicide: a winning battle

hen Gretchen McGeeney learned that her son had died, she was devastated. More than a year before, Landon had been declared missing in California, where he had been attending college. The news came as a shock, but brought closure.

Now the family had to deal with the knowledge that their son had taken his own life.

Gretchen found healing in music, writing poetry and reading books about suicide.

“I wanted more information on the grief process,” she said. “Reading reinforced that what I was feeling was part of that process and that I wasn’t going crazy.”

She also became involved with the local HEARTBEAT chapter, a grief support organization for survivors, and currently serves as a contact for that organization.

When it comes to state suicide rates, Colorado ranks in the top 10.

It’s an ongoing issue for Mesa County in particular—the annual report from the Mesa County Coroner’s Office lists the 2016 suicide rate in Mesa County as 32.3 per 100,000 people.

That’s greater than the statewide rate (20.3 per 100,000), and nearly double the U.S. rate (13.26 per 100,000).

The 2015-2017 Community Needs Assessment, conducted by the county Department of Health, identifies suicide as a “winnable battle” in Mesa County. The assessment found that males commit suicide at a higher rate than females, but females attempt suicide three times more than males.

By age range, the highest rate of completed suicides was in males in the 30-39 age bracket, with 50-59 and 6069 next. Males use more lethal means like firearms or hanging; females generally choose drugs.

A common denominator was the presence of alcohol and/or drugs in the system at the time of death.

Most of those who tested negative for drugs or alcohol were either diagnosed with a mental health disease or a terminal illness.

Individuals who attempt or complete suicide are hurting. They have difficulty reaching out for help and don’t know what to do. Their perception of self and reality is often skewed.

Men especially have a difficult time. Men have a harder time expressing feelings, and they often don’t. They view their difficulties as their problem and they don’t want to burden anyone else.

“Maybe that is why we lose so many men to suicide,” McGeeney said. “Where do they turn with grief and feelings they don’t know what to do with?”

The force behind HEARTBEAT Margaret Palo lost a son to suicide in 1978. Along with her husband, Jim, and other bereaved parents, she led the chartering effort for the local Compassionate Friends chapter in 1980. She set it up so that individuals living on the Western Slope who had lost a child from any cause had the support they needed.

“We were fortunate to have a lot of caring friends and relatives, plus a church family who reached out to us with a lot of compassion, but we felt very isolated in dealing with our grief and the impact it was having on our immediate family members,” Palo said.

It soon became apparent, due to an increased number of youth suicides in the Grand Valley, that more specialized support was necessary.

In 1992, Palo again spearheaded the founding of a support organization—the Grand Junction chapter of HEARTBEAT. “HEARTBEAT supports anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide,” she said.

Warning signs Individuals contemplating taking their life often exhibit warning signs including depression, drug and alcohol abuse, mood swings, talking about suicide or being a burden to

others, too little or too much sleep, feeling hopeless, being withdrawn, giving away important possessions, loss of interest in activities, and feeling isolated or trapped. Because many individuals are able to mask their feelings, however, signs are not always apparent.

The positive news is there is a lot of support to help individuals who are grieving for a lost friend or family member, or feel at risk to consider suicide themselves.

After losing a good friend and her daughter to suicide, Erica Kitzman wanted to find a way to help prevent further deaths by suicide in the area.

Working in conjunction with the Mind Springs peer program, she started Alternatives to Suicide, which meets regularly, with walk-ins welcome.

“People who have suicidal thoughts or have attempted suicide need to have a safe setting where they can provide positive support to one another,” Kitzman said. ■

It’s been a long, hard road, but now he’s arrived at a point where he can share his journey from depression and suicidal tendencies to a life of joy and thankfulness. He does so with an open heart, to give others hope.

Tom met his wife, Christy, 47 years ago through a Denver church youth group. They dated for four years and married in 1974. They moved to California, had three children and were actively involved in church. Tom was enjoying his career with Benjamin Moore and life was good.

Then things got rough.

“In 1998, Benjamin Moore eliminated my job and I lost my identity,” Tom said. “On my 40th birthday I had a major breakdown, and three days later I told Christy, ‘I just want to die.’

That’s the first time she took me to the hospital, and it took about a year for me to get back to myself again.”

Benjamin Moore hired him back in a different position, and things went well for another 14 years. But in 2013, Tom’s younger brother committed suicide. The day after the funeral, his older sister died of a heart attack.

Tom didn’t take time to grieve, trying to tough it out, but ended up in the hospital for a second time.

It soon became clear that the couple would relocate to Grand Junction to be with Christy’s parents, who needed end-of-life care. Tom left his job in April 2014. At the time, he didn’t know about Mesa County’s high suicide rate.

“I came from a lousy situation to a much worse one,” said Tom. “I had no job identity, and being retired in a new city, I really had no identity.”

He and Christy took walks through their new neighborhood, but all the

while, he was silently figuring out ways to take his own life. He ended up in the hospital under suicide watch again.

“I was so angry when they went to put me in the hospital in Grand Junction and they didn’t have room for me,” said Tom. “They let you sit in the ER for hours because they don’t see the urgency. It was humiliating to be escorted by two security guards to a Denver hospital. They even followed me into the bathroom to make sure I didn’t hurt myself or escape.”

Eventually, Tom was diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

“When I get depressed, it’s not for six, seven or even 10 days,” he said.

“It’s for a long time. The last time was almost two years.”

A burden for both Tom was not alone in his depression. Christy was right alongside him, dealing with her own challenges.

Tom was on numerous medications for depression, anxiety and sleep, which Christy had to monitor and keep away from him. Christy’s mom had died; her dad had dementia and she was responsible for his medication, too. She couldn’t leave him alone. She couldn’t leave Tom alone, either.

She’d entered her marriage unaware that her husband had any emotional issues. Tom’s first suicidal episode in 1998 led him to share some things with her for the first time. His depression was far from new.

“Until a therapist asked me about my younger years, I really didn’t understand what I’d done in high school,” said Tom. “I just pushed it aside.”

He was an extremely sensitive teenager. Every breakup with a girl devastated him. He would intentionally hurt himself, then make up stories about what happened so people would feel bad for him. He once over-

dosed on aspirin and Sudafed, riding out the side effects alone in his room. No one ever knew.

Christy felt guilty hospitalizing Tom when he needed help, even when he begged her not to. A lot of prayer and consulting with one of their sons helped.

“It takes a lot of patience, understanding, empathy and listening because I really have no idea what [Tom] is going through,” she said. “It was really hard for me, wondering whether he was going to survive it. I had my own panic and anxiety trying to keep him from doing anything that would hurt him or making decisions about putting him in the hospital.”

Eventually, Tom recognized that Christy had made the best decision for him.

“I knew it’s what I needed,” he said. “She was very forgiving of me when I wasn’t of myself. I was almost hurt by that because she had the right to be angry at me and she shouldn’t care about me anymore.

I was confused by her loving me unconditionally after the way I had treated her over the years and things I had hidden from her.”

Life lessons Admitting to mental illness is one of the hardest parts of all for Tom. When he finally accepted it, he was able to open himself up to help.

Through a therapist, he learned to embrace his depression and ask God what he should learn or be aware of in each situation.

“When I look back, there were so many small but significant things put in my life that taught me something.

Life’s challenges can help us become what God really wants us to be,” he said. “That doesn’t mean he wants me to be depressed or suicidal. Every one of those situations he took and

These days, Tom has purpose again. He plays the French horn and is involved in his church. He has a 2-year-old grandson, Charlie, who always brightens his day.

“I practice being silent, knowing God loves me unconditionally without a shadow of a doubt. He never said, ‘I’m done with you.’” said Tom. “This doesn’t mean I will never be depressed or suicidal again, but I can’t imagine that now because I’ve never been happier.” ■

he kids are grown and gone, and you’re rattling around what used to be a full house, wondering if you should downsize.

Maybe you’ve considered hiring a Realtor to represent you, but then you think, “How hard can it be? Lots of people sell homes on their own, and I can save a bundle on commissions. So do I really need a Realtor?”

The answer is yes. Marie-Louise Hausermann found that out the hard way.

said. “This is associated with market value and not appraised value.”

Knowledge and understanding The benefits of using a Realtor far outweigh the fee charged. For instance, a broker can interpret the 35-40 pages of the contract, which is always couched in legalese. Realtors also continuously update their education so they always know the industry’s latest rules and regulations.

Realtors market your home professionally, listing it on multiple websites and in the newspaper, using attractive signs and hosting open houses.

“Statistics show that when you use a Realtor, you will get top dollar for your home and come out ahead,” Gerber said.

Realtors are a great help in the buying process as well. If you’re in the market to buy a new (or new-to-you) home, the real estate professional who shows you properties does not charge a fee for showing them. He or she will be paid only when your offer is accepted, the contract is signed and the sale is complete.

Some Realtors are designated Senior Real Estate Specialists (SRES) who have undergone additional education enabling them to keep seniors’ needs in mind.

Klippert said Realtors can provide a perspective that their clients may not have, viewing the house as it is, and not as buyers and sellers want it to be.

“This includes viewing the deferred maintenance, dated elements of the home and [establishing] time frames to pack and move,” she said. “With fresh eyes and objective views, the Realtor can give a clear value of the home.

extended families to create game plans for downsizing and correcting home issues that can help with the sale of the home.”

Realtors work with owners, offering suggestions on small changes that can make a big difference in the price and how quickly the property sells.

“I recently helped a client downsize from her family home of 40 years. I advised her to make a few changes, like placing tile in bathrooms and removing carpet,” said Gerber. “We were able to market her home and get it sold fairly quickly at a higher price than she thought she could get.”

Realtors with SRES training know the toll that a move can have on their older clients.

“Downsizing is a very emotional event for a senior,” Klippert said.

“Many times, getting rid of personal property is as hard on the emotions as a death in the family.”

St. Mary’s partners with Colorado Canyons Colorado Canyons Hospital and Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center have launched a new, collaborative Transitional Care Program that will provide a better solution to the problem of longterm, complex medical care in western Colorado. The model, developed by the Mayo Clinic, streamlines the transfer of patients whose serious medical conditions have stabilized, but who are not yet able to return to their normal routine. Nationally, the care model is demonstrating lower health care costs and 90+ percent patient satisfaction scores.

The project positions Colorado Canyons to fill the long-existing void in transitional care in western Colorado and allows them to expand their facility to accommodate nine new patient rooms and support staff and equipment to match.

Culture Fest Art Show seeks entries Artwork is being sought for a juried art show that will be part of the 2017 Mesa County Libraries Culture Fest, an annual celebration of diversity. Two-dimensional fine art, including photography and computer-generated work, will be accepted. Work cannot exceed 36 by 48 inches, and cannot exceed 40 pounds. Salvadoran art exhibit at City Hall The Foundation for Cultural Ex-

change (FCE) and Grand Junction Commission on the Arts present the second annual art exhibition featuring art from students in Grand Junction’s sister city, El Espino, El Salvador, as well as the work of renowned Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort. Pieces will be on exhibit until the end of September, and then they will be auctioned on November 4 at the annual FCE Anniversary Celebration at The Art Center.

New study shows that chronic disease is bankrupting America

D

id you know that 12 percent of Americans suffer from five or more chronic conditions? It may not sound like much, but this fraction of the population accounts for 41 percent of total health care spending.

If we don’t do more to prevent people from acquiring chronic disease, health care bills could blow a hole in the federal budget.

A new study conducted by RAND Health and supported by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, shows just how costly it is to treat the severely ill. In 2014, the latest data available, 32 percent of those with five or more chronic conditions visited an emergency department at least once. Emergency room visits cost more than $1,200 on average.

The sickest patients also require more prescriptions. In 2014, patients with five or more chronic conditions filled nearly six times the number of prescriptions as people with one or two.

Chronic disease prevents people from living independently. More than half of those with five or more chronic conditions report having physical limitations that affect their daily lives.

As a result, patients have to cut back on work or ask someone to help them. More than 34 million Americans provide unpaid care to adults who are older than 50. This leads to a

loss in worker productivity that could cost society $794 billion by 2030.

If we hope to save lives and avoid such staggering costs, we must undertake key reforms to help patients manage and prevent chronic diseases.

First, policymakers need to work together to ensure that care is affordable and accessible. A third of privately-insured Americans recently reported receiving a “surprise” medical bill, one in which their health insurance plan paid less than what they expected. And many insurers have started dropping certain prescriptions from their coverage.

When patients can’t access the care they need, they get sicker—and health care costs rise. Improving medication adherence alone could save America more than $105 billion a year.

Second, we ought to expand programs proven to prevent chronic diseases. For instance, the Diabetes Prevention Program, which is offered by private insurers, helps patients at risk of developing diabetes improve their diet and exercise more. The program has worked tremendously well—patients aged 60 or older who made lifestyle changes through the program reduced their risk of developing diabetes by 71 percent. Medicare will cover it for those at risk and age 65 and older starting in 2018, but if Medicare offered the program to at-risk adults aged 60-64, it could save $7 billion more. ■
