Welcome to BeaconFest a celebration of age!
If you’re reading this before the show, don’t miss out on the fun! Mark your calendars for this year’s BeaconFest Boomer and Senior Fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, September 9 at Grand Junction Convention Center (formerly Two Rivers Convention Center), 159 Main St.
ADMISSION IS FREE!
Plus, no other senior expo around has live music, free food and informative seminars. This year, we have an exciting lineup of entertainment from acts like King ’n’ Trio, Javier de los Santos and Peggy Malone, along with several new faces! Free seminars are offered on a range of topics, including Medicare, fraud prevention, retirement options and breakthrough medical treatments.
VENDORS GALORE!
Representatives from over 100 local and national service providers and agencies will be available to talk with you directly about products and services available to help you age well. We’ll have home improvement folks, medical professionals, representatives from assisted living facilities, government officials, real estate professionals, massage therapists and more.
FEELING LUCKY?
Thousands of dollars worth of door prizes will be
given away in free drawings throughout the day. All you have to do is fill out the door prize entry form on page 13 of this program and bring it to the BEACON booth. Please bring your entry form already filled out to minimize crowding. You must be present to win, so walk around or sit back and wait for your name to be called from the stage. We’ll be calling out multiple winners every 30 minutes.
WE’VE SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST
Gather near the stage at 2:30 p.m. for your chance to win the biggest prize of all. One lucky attendee will win two tickets to see The Doobie Brothers live at The Ball Arena (formerly the Pepsi Center) in Denver. You need not be present to win. Immediately following, stick around for “Let’s Make a Squeal,” the game when all unclaimed door prizes will be given to the audience in a madcap rendition of Monty Hall’s “Let’s Make a Deal.”
COVID MEASURES AND SAFETY
Although seniors are the most vaccinated group in the Grand Valley, we’re taking additional measures for your safety. Hand sanitizer will be available at booths and throughout the convention center, and this year’s event is mask friendly—extras will be available by request.
We will follow any and all official COVID safety guidelines that are announced.
SENIOR’S CHOICE AWARDS
I’m always impressed with the variety of exhibitors and how they engage attendees. Please let us know who you think has the best overall booth, which booth has the friendliest people, and which booth has the best free stuff by filling out the Senior’s Choice Awards ballot and dropping it by the BEACON booth.
THANK YOU!
BeaconFest is also our way of saying thank you for reading the BEACON. Please thank our vendors and sponsors: Medicare Resource Center, Colorado Advanced Orthopedics Sports Medicine & Spine; Humana; Hilltop Senior Living; Stellar Senior Living and KREX News Channel 5. BeaconFest would not be possible without their support. ■

The Brass Consort
9:00, Jazz/Swing
The Brass Consort is made up of two trumpets and two trombones that have played together each week during the pandemic, ready to play a potpourri of favorite tunes once live music resumed. Clark Gault assembled the group, consisting of the three top brass players from the Centennial Band: Charlie Sweet, Shawn Cwalinski and Roger Bulla.
MAIN STAGE
Javier de los Santos
10:30, Classical Guitar
Classical guitarist Javier de los Santos began his formal music studies in 1998 under Francisco Javier Muro Guevara at the Unidad Académica de Música de la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAMUAZ) in the State of Zacatecas, México. Since then, he has performed extensively in the U.S., Mexico, Spain and Brazil. He has performed at Blue Sage Center for the Arts in Paonia and with the Apollo Chamber Players from Houston at the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Chamber Concert Series. Past performances include playing with Pepe Romero and Romero’s Guitar Quartet at the Celedonio Romero Guitar Institute in Oklahoma City, and being a soloist with the Grand Junction and Boulder Symphony Orchestras. Proceeds from their five CDs are also part of the band’s fundraising efforts.
The Shimmy Mob 1:30, Belly dancers
The Shimmy Mob was established in Canada 11 years ago. What was supposed to be a one-time event grew into a worldwide initiative that raises money for local domestic violence shelters. The local troupe of ladies has performed for the past 10 years, raising money for Grand Valley’s Latimer House and receiving worldwide recognition for their efforts. Help these women raise awareness and money to help fight domestic violence in our community by donating to their cause. Call Shalona McFarland at 260-0819 for information on joining, or more about their upcoming fundraiser on October 23.
Ron Koss
2:00, Guitar Favorites
Whether he’s entertaining with Americana rock favorites, country melodies or swing tunes, just about anything Ron Koss plays has audiences singing along. He has played music professionally for over 30 years and has performed at numerous events across the Grand Valley for over a decade. His dynamic personality and interactive performances make him a favorite at BeaconFest.
Canyon Grand Barbershop Chorus
9:00,
Barbershop a cappella
This teaching quartet from the Bookcliff Barbershop Harmony Chorus consists of George Humfeld (tenor), Olyn Carlson (lead), Dave Woodward (bass) and Bob Labig (baritone). The BEACON is pleased to give local organizations the opportunity to honor their outstanding volunteers each year at BeaconFest. The Volunteer of the Year ceremony recognizes our community’s exceptional volunteers age 50 and older.
The reader-selected Volunteer of the Year—along with all the volunteers who were nominated—goes above and beyond their normal responsibilities to make a difference in the lives of others.
Last year our readers chose Ed
Tami Bunch, Volunteer Services Manager at the Grand Junction VA, who submitted her nomination for Wacker, wrote, “His contagious smile brightens our hallways as he greets patients and staff.
