Fabulous fashion tips for women over 50

et’s be honest, ladies—our bodies aren’t what they used to be. Even with a little pooch here and a little droop there, it doesn’t mean you have to cover up with turtlenecks and muumuus. Age and experience can add a special flair to women over 50. You’re never too old to look hot!

Raiding your granddaughter’s closet, however, is not the answer. Local stores offer trendy, flattering clothing and accessories from head to toe, which allow the mature woman to express herself with confidence and freedom.

If you dread going into your closet because it all looks the same, everything you own is outdated, or you feel like you never have anything to wear (which translates to “I don’t like what I have in my closet”), then get ready to go on a fun fashion journey with some local women who are sure to inspire you.

A passion for fashion Pollux Clothing Company owner Ivy Parnasius has worked in retail since she was 16.

“My calling has always been fashion, so I left law school and opened my first boutique,” Parnasius, 43, said.

Her first boutique was in Florida, but after falling in love with Grand Junction, specifically the downtown area, she relocated to the Western Slope 17 years ago and opened Pollux Clothing Company on Main Street a year later. After two moves and expansions, Pollux is now located at 321 Main St. in Grand Junction. Parnasius opened her second location at 433 Main St. in Montrose seven years ago.

Parnasius believes strongly in carrying style for every generation, which is why she uses seniors as well as young 20-somethings to model Pollux’s clothes.

“They look every bit as good as their younger counterparts,” Parnasius said. “Over 50 doesn’t mean frumpy. It’s all about comfort and confidence.”

She makes buying trips to Los Angeles every three weeks to keep the mix of merchandise at Pollux unique and always changing.

“We carry very small quantities, so everything we have is special,” Par-

nasius said. “We carry styles for every generation that are functional and serve many occasions. Our prices are very affordable. Being fashionable doesn’t have to be expensive.”

Parnasius gave the following fashion tips for women over 50: Must-haves for every woman’s wardrobe • Dark denim jeans in skinny and boot-cut styles • White jeans are great alternatives to shorts for the warmer months.

• Tank tops in a wider-strap style that is fitted but not tight • Wear wraps, blazers and cardigans open and over tank tops or other thin layers to add coverage for arms.

• Wrap dresses look amazing on everyone.

• Leggings and tunics are the ultimate in comfort, ease and fashionable style.

• Never underestimate the power of accessories. Add a scarf or necklace to make a fantastic outfit.

A model senior Carrie Flemming, 73, is one of Pollux’s senior models. Even during her career as a grade school teacher, she always felt it was important to dress well.

“I started noticing about five years ago that Pollux was carrying fashion for more mature women,” Flemming said.

Before shopping at Pollux, Flemming said all her clothes were black, brown and navy.

“My daughter used to say I would buy 14 of the same thing,” she said.

“My closet has evolved and is fun and fresh now. Don’t be afraid of colors like turquoise, new brighter blues or oranges.”

Flemming likes to support downtown and locally owned businesses such as Razzmatazz, Zephyr, Benges Shoe Store and Heirlooms for Hospice.

“They get to know you, and they have honest, personal customer service,” she said. “They won’t let you leave the store in something that is too young for you or doesn’t fit you right. Lines should flow right and compliment your body no matter what shape you are. You have to look at the fit, comfort level and whether you feel really special in an outfit.”

To diversify and make the most of your wardrobe, Flemming recommended: • Review your clothes at the end of each season. Take note of what you did or didn’t wear.

• Sort your closet by color to see what you need or tend to overbuy.

“If you’re always buying the same style or color, take a friend shopping with you,” Flemming advised.

• Necklaces, earrings, scarves and other fun accessories can make an old or new outfit “pop” and de-emphasize a saggy neck

Secondhand style Style doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Secondhand stores like Heirlooms for Hospice make shopping for fashionable, quality items relatively easy.

“Secondhand stores make people think that you have to sort through items to get anything good,” Heirlooms’ Creative Design Manager Trisha Whittington said. “We sell only high-quality, gently used clothing so you’re never going to have to search for quality.”

In addition to clothing from top designers like Eileen Fisher and

Joseph Ribkoff, Heirlooms also sells furniture, home décor, jewelry and accessories. All items are donated by members of the community and proceeds from sales benefit the mission of HopeWest.

Women (and men) of all ages can find items to complement their style at Heirlooms. It’s not uncommon to have three generations of women come in and shop, each finding an item that suits her own personal style, such as a piece of jewelry, scarf or homecoming dress.

With all the seasonal and timely fashions at Heirlooms, Whittington said women 50 and older don’t have to “dress their age” in an outdated fashion.

“Some people will come in and ask, ‘Is this too young looking?’” she said. “Just because it’s in style doesn’t mean it’s too young.”

Whittington said she finds that to be a common misconception among women. After all, when it comes to style, it’s not always about tight blouses and short skirts.

“Dress to fit your form and dress in things you love,” she said. “Wear whatever makes you feel pretty.”

“My style has evolved over the years from feedback from other people, and from feeling comfortable and confident in the reflection in the mirror,” she said.

Every body has flaws, and Hanson said that “learning her body” has helped her fashion transition.

“I wear mostly three-quarter length sleeves now and don’t show my arms,” Hanson said. “I’ve altered the hemlines of my pants. With my broad shoulders, V-necks bring that in. I don’t wear belts or things that are snug. I want my clothes to drape instead.”

Despite the fact that Hanson said she doesn’t spend a lot of time on her style, people consistently compliment her. She shops at chain stores as well as the boutiques on Main Street, looking for items that speak to her. If it’s affordable and it fits, she gets it. She also alters old clothes to give them a fresh new look, makes scarves and changes out jewelry.

“There’s a discovery process you go through,” she said. “You have to learn what colors work for you, which you can usually tell by the compliments you get.” ■

Everyone loves a good tomato

By Melanie Wiseman “You say tomato, I say tomahto…” sang Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

No matter how you pronounce it, there’s no denying that we should all be eating more of these savory gems.

This time of year, tomato varieties are plentiful at farmers markets and in backyard gardens. Over 7,500 tomato varieties are grown for various purposes, from soups and salsas to slicing and canning, main dish ingredients and side dishes.

Research shows tomatoes are by far the healthiest of the fruits and vegetables, with the power to ward off some of the worst diseases. This highly versatile health product with an equal-

ly versatile number of preparation options leaves no reason to neglect the tomato as part of a healthy diet.

Fruit or vegetable?

Botanically, a tomato is a fruit, a flowering plant with seeds and ovary.

The tomato, however, has a much lower sugar content than other fruits so it’s not as sweet. They’re often considered culinary vegetables.

Tomatoes are not the only food source with this ambiguity: cucumbers, green beans, eggplants, avocados, bell peppers and squashes are botanically fruits, yet are cooked as vegetables.

They were brought to Europe by the Spanish and erroneously thought to be poisonous by many Europeans who were suspicious of their bright, shiny fruit. The leaves are in fact poisonous, but the fruit is not.

Tomatoes were not grown in England until the 1590s. Influenced by the British, the U.S. was slow to get on board as

well. Some people continued to think of tomatoes as poisonous and they were often grown more as ornamental plants than food. Thomas Jefferson ate tomatoes in Paris and sent some seeds back to America. The tomato culture soon became a great enterprise, and today the crop is grown in all 50 states.

Because of the long growing season needed for this heat-loving crop, Florida and California in particular have become major tomato producers.

Local farmers tout tomatoes Like many Western Slope residents Carol Zadrozny, owner of Z’s Orchards, grew up eating tomatoes from her grandmother’s garden.

“We grow heirloom tomatoes and have seeds from all over the world,” Zadrozny said. “Tomatoes are a staple for so many cultures, like Italy’s sauces and Mexican salsas for example.”

An heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) tomato. Over the past 40 years, we have lost many heirloom varieties, along with the smaller family farms that grew them. The multitude of heirlooms that had adapted to survive well for hundreds of years have been replaced by fewer hybrid tomatoes, bred for their commercially attractive characteristics. The smooth, round, uniform red tomatoes we know today are genetic mutations, which sacrifice the fruit’s natural sweet taste.

“It’s about eye appeal,” Zadronzy said. “Our eyes first tell us whether we’re going to like something or not.”

“People like home-grown, fieldgrown, grown-in-the-dirt tomatoes,” Helmer said. “They are more flavorful, taking in vitamins and minerals from the soil versus the store-bought tomatoes

which are raised through hydroponics.

They are picked green and left to ripen off the vine. Ours are picked ripe the same day they go to market.”

Helmer touts 12 tomato varieties.

“Yellow tomatoes are lower in acid and Romas are meatier,” he said.

Health benefits The health benefits of tomatoes can be attributed to their wealth of nutrients and vitamins, including impressive amounts of vitamins A, C and K, and significant amounts of vitamin B6, folate and thiamin. Tomatoes are also a good source of potassium, manganese, phosphorous and copper. They are fat free, low in calories and high in fiber and protein. But wait, there’s more.

• Abundant source of the antioxidants. Lycopene is a vital antioxidant that helps in the fight against cancerous cell formation as well as other health complications and diseases.

No other fruit or vegetable has the high concentration of lycopene the tomato possesses.

• Digestive health. Tomatoes have a large amount of fiber, which effectively removes toxins from the body.

• Improves vision. Vitamin A aids in improving vision and preventing night blindness and macular degeneration.

Many vision problems occur due to the negative effects of free radicals, and vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant.

• Lowers hypertension. Daily consumption of tomatoes reduces the risk of developing hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. This is partially due to the impressive levels of potassium found in tomatoes.

• Manages diabetes. Daily consumption of tomatoes reduces the oxidative stress of Type 2 diabetes.

• Prevents urinary tract infections.

Tomatoes are high in water content and are a natural diuretic, reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections and bladder cancer.

Daily consumption of tomatoes fulfills the daily requirement of vitamins and minerals, and exerts an overall protective effect on the body. ■

Grilled Peach Bruschetta with Creamy Feta and Balsamic

Ingredients: 4 oz cream cheese, softened

1 loaf / 2 mini-loaves baguette

4 oz feta cheese, room temperature

Balsamic reduction

4 peaches, halved, pit removed

10-15 mint leaves; ribbon cut/chopped

Âź cup extra virgin olive oil +/-

Instructions:

Bring both the cream cheese and feta to room temperature.

Using a hand mixer or with a wooden spoon, whip/mix the cheeses together.

Cover and chill until 30 minutes before ready to use.

Set out the balsamic reduction, allowing to warm to room temperature if made beforehand.

Heat grill.

Clean and halve the peaches, removing the pit.

Score each half, two lines one direction and then rotate and slice another two lines, intersecting the first two lines.

Slice the bread on the diagonal to desired thickness.

Pour the olive oil in a bowl and brush each side of the baguette slices with the oil.

Once the grill is hot, lower flame to medium and brush the grates with oil to prevent sticking.

Place the peaches flesh side down on the grill; cook for about 5 minutes and flip, cooking an additional 5 minutes; remove and set aside.

Place the bread on the grill and cook for 2 minutes, flip, and cook another 2 minutes; remove and set aside.

Ribbon cut or chop fresh mint.

Assembly Generously spread the creamy feta over one side of the grilled baguette.

Slice each peach halve into 4-6 slices (depending on how large the peaches are) Removing the skin is optional.

Place a peach slice over the creamy feta.

Drizzle with balsamic reduction.

Garnish with fresh mint.

ASK THE OLD BAG Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick Dear Old Bag: I read with interest the letter from “Hurting Mom” and your response in last month’s column.

Having had a mother who lived to be 95 and having dealt with the parent saying, “Don’t treat me like a child,” I couldn’t let your response go by without adding a different perspective.

Like the 73-year-old lady, my mother was a career woman and extremely independent her whole life. She only became dependent the last six months of her life. Throughout my entire childhood and adulthood, she was a selfish, self-centered individual who believed she should be the center of everyone’s universe, especially my father’s and mine. She would sink to any depth to win an argument, and if something happened that she disapproved of, you knew without fail that she would get back at you sooner or later. Admittedly, her favorite weapon was words, but she used them deftly. I was so relieved when my husband witnessed some of her behavior and announced that she was a nasty individual, and he couldn’t believe how she treated me. This was from a man who doesn’t indulge in that sort of rhetoric. When I was 65 she insulted me so deeply and personally to make a point that I was ready to walk away and never speak to her again.

She quickly realized that she had not only crossed the line—she had obliterated it. She called in tears begging to be forgiven and my husband spoke to her because I could not. Suddenly her words were costing her something.

I did return and I tried to take care of her until her death, but with little enthusiasm and without any love; it was a duty. Please do not assume that all parents deserve love. Please do not assume that senior parents can treat children any way they please and be

spared a backlash from the adult child.

Please do not assume that seniors are entitled to petulant, self-serving behaviors because they are either a senior or a parent. The woman writing the letter seemed to imply she had all her faculties, so something is at play. Please do not assume that because adult children are grown, they should still put up with a parent’s unacceptable behavior and when they react it is by definition abuse. My mother criticized me her whole life. I was an straight-A student.

I graduated from high school with honors; as a senior I was voted “most dependable” in a class of 500. I graduated from college with a math degree and had an outstanding career. I never gave my parents a lick of trouble. But that didn’t matter. Given all of that, her last words before she died criticized me. That is my lasting impression of my mother. Using your conclusion, “When they begin yelling or scolding me, I would simply say, ‘I feel so hurt by your words. What is it that has you so upset at me?’ She better be ready to hear the answer. Maybe the senior writing in needs to dig a bit into her own behaviors. Regards, JB

Dear JB: Thank you for helping me to see the other side. I knew about these kinds of mothers and fathers, and I should have shown the other side. To you parents out there who are being mistreated by an adult child, look in the mirror. Your kids may not be there for you like the writer above.

They may disown you, and you may be left with no one to care for or about you. Relationships are difficult at best and require lots of loving care on both sides. Thanks again. OB ■

When adult kids live in your house

hose living are you paying for?

Roughly 62 percent of people age 50 and older are providing financial support to family members, according to a study by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Some are helping out with the needs of their elderly relatives, but for many, their adult children have moved home—or never left.

Whether the support is a one-time need or ongoing over many years,

the baby boomers who are shelling out money do so without realizing they’re putting their own retirement security at risk. After all, even people who earn plenty have been operating on a thinner margin for the last several years.

This is a problem that has grown to the point that self-help books are popping up to advise people how to deal with it. In the book “The Bank of Mom and Dad: Money, Parents and Grown Children,” author Derrick Penner believes parents let kids live at home because they feel guilty and can’t say no. But he says it’s time

to get a little hard-nosed. After all, parents have far fewer earning years left until they need to rely mostly on what they’ve saved. The kids, on the other hand, have decades to earn and sock away money.

“I wrote the book to give those considering lending or giving money to their children some things to think about,” Penner said.

He recommends that before you “open the bank,” do a careful assessment of your financial situation. Then sit down with your kids in a calm and honest discussion and require them to bare their financial souls to you.

lives on a fixed income, yet two of his adult children regularly tap the “bank of Dad” without regard for his own financial situation. Then again, he’s never told them they’re hurting his pocketbook. His 37-year-old daughter asks for money nearly every month to “scrape up the rent.” But her Facebook page shows her making the rounds of restaurants, movies and bars on the weekends. Her dad’s a nice man, but don’t feel sorry for him, because he needs to have the discussion that Penner recommends.

Penner also tells parents not to succumb to guilt or those sad faces asking for another loan or gift of money.

He also says that if your kids ask for a loan treat it seriously. Not as in “you’ll never see that money again.” Put the loan in writing. Set up a payment amount and due date. That, he said, creates a firmer sense of obligation.

Then expect them to make the payments. If you look the other way when they don’t pay, you may as well call it a gift.

When kids move home… or fail to move out When kids are born we parents think we’ll be supporting them for 18 years, maybe more if they go to college. But in 2014 the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 15 percent or more of adult children ages 25-34 are still living at home or have returned.

It could be because of delayed marriage or a failed marriage, a weak economy or student loan debt—the reasons vary. The question is: If your adult kids live in your house, should you charge them rent? Many sources say yes!

Many college graduates complete a degree, maybe several degrees, but don’t feel the need to leave home.

Why bother? Even if they can find a good job these days, living on your dime lets them drive nicer cars, wear more expensive clothes, and blow more money on entertainment and eating out. Plus, you may do their cooking and laundry for free! Where else can you get a deal like that?

It could be that your kids left home and later suffered a significant loss, like a spouse, a job, or foreclosure.

How much should you charge?

The U.S. News & World Report’s My Money column suggests a nominal amount of $100 or $150 per month, rather than demanding the fair market value of an apartment (unless of course you really need more).

But make sure the kids know it’s not optional or you’ll never get it. Of course, the point isn’t that you need the money, though you may. The point is to keep them accountable, make them budget their money, and be aware of the expenses of a household.

Some parents don’t feel right about charging rent. For them, My Money suggests making the kids responsible to pay for groceries or for the electric bill or some other regular expense. If you’re determined not to charge rent of any kind, consider setting up some regular chores and expect the kids to take care of them.

Allowing them to live without requiring them to contribute to the running of the household, financially or at the very least, with significant chores, is not doing them a favor. It’s enabling poor habits and draining your retirement. Living at home for free bears no resemblance to the real world and may undermine your child’s ability to ever stand up to adult responsibilities. For their sakes and for your sanity and financial well being, reconsider the free rent.

9 worthwhile hikes in the Grand Valley Story & photos by Cecily Whiteside

estern Colorado summer is in full swing, which for hikers means one thing: The trails beckon.

But the heat of the day can be too much for some, and with cooler fall weather approaching there’s no better time to enjoy this beautiful place we call home than to explore what Mother Nature gifted to us.

Please remember to take ample water, food and sunscreen when hiking. A good rule of thumb is to have about 1 liter of water per hour of your planned hike.

Also, it’s important to mind your manners. Stay on the trail. Remember that hikers give way to horses; and if you bring it in with you, take it out so the next person has the same pristine experience you did.

Here are some of my favorite hikes:

1. Pollack Bench Located in Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness Area Access trailhead from I-70 to the Highway 340 exit in Fruita (Exit 19) Approximately 5 miles with 1,000foot elevation change Dogs and horses welcome; no bikes This is my favorite trail. No matter the season or how many times I hike it, it never fails to amaze me. This trail is shaped like a lollipop. You get up onto the bench via a straight, fairly strenuous climb (the stick of the lollipop) then continue through piñon pines to a sweeping right-hand turn that takes you down to a cliffside trail. This is where the views go from “pretty” to “Oh my God, can you believe how beautiful this is?”

Look for elk and bighorn sheep in the valley below, and amazing views of wilderness canyons.

top of the cliffs you just hiked beneath, and will end up at the parking area at the Rough Canyon trailhead.

Look for canyon tree frogs, golden eagles nesting in the cliffs, blue-bellied lizards and towering sandstone cliffs.

4. Flume Canyon Located in Black Ridge Canyon Wilderness Area Access trailhead from I-70 to the Highway 340 exit in Fruita (Exit 19) Liberty Cap

2. Liberty Cap (via Corkscrew Trail) Located in Colorado National Monument Access trailhead from Wildwood Drive Approximately 4 miles with a strenuous 2,000-foot elevation change No dogs, horses or bikes.

While the prospect of climbing to the top of Liberty Cap can be daunting, taking Corkscrew Trail doubles the distance from the trailhead through the steepest part of the climb, which decreases the steepness. At the top of Corkscrew Trail, the trail splits. Take the right fork to continue up to Liberty Cap. Take the

left hand fork for Ute Canyon (see #8 on this list). Look for collared lizards, bluebirds and amazing views of the Grand Valley.

3. Rough Canyon Located in Bangs Canyon Wilderness Area Access from D Road/Little Park Road Approximately 4 miles with 1,000foot elevation change Dogs welcome; no horses or bikes.

Descend from the parking lot into the canyon where the trail splits.

Turn right for a short level walk to Mica Mine, a trail that’s great for the grandkids. Turn left at the fork for a wilderness hike that will leave you breathless. Rough Canyon Trail follows a creek bed that is usually dry except for a few weeks in wet springs. There are several waterfalls that must be down-climbed, so dogs may need help in one or two spots.

At the bottom of the canyon, the trail opens up into a panoramic view that looks down toward Whitewater. In order to make this a loop, turn left at these cliffs and hike up to the Jeep trail, which you can follow using the well-marked yellow stripes on the rock. This trail brings you along the

This trail starts from the Pollack Bench trailhead parking lot but stays low, skirting the bottoms of the cliffs Flume Canyon in Flume Canyon.

This is an undulating trail that has no steep sustained climbs, but stays interesting due to the varied topography.

Look for bighorn sheep and towering sandstone cliffs.

5. Holy Cross to Tabeguache Located in the Lunch Loops Access from Monument Road Approximately 3.5 miles with 300foot elevation change Dogs and horses welcome; no bikes.

The trail climbs a steep bluff to the ridge overlooking Monument Road.

Then after crossing the cliff top, it dips into the next valley where it

follows a streambed up into broken rock formations, eventually coming out at the high meadow from which numerous trails lead. The Tabeguache Trail will take you back down to the parking area.

6. Monument Canyon Located in Colorado National Monument

trail splits. Take the left fork for the shorter hike, or the right for an additional mile. The trail pops out on the Tabeguache Trail to head back down to the parking area. Look for sandstone rock formations, rabbits, bluebirds and lizards.

8. Ute Canyon (via corkscrew trail) Located in Colorado National Monument

Access from Broadway (Highway 340)

Access from Meadows Lane

Out and back hike of up to 12 miles with elevation change of 1,500 feet

Up to 14-mile out-and-back hike with 1,800-foot elevation change.

This amazing hike takes you right past Independence Monument. After leaving the parking lot, head past a neighborhood before turning west into the canyon. A sustained climb of about 1 1/2 miles brings you an elevation gain of about 500 feet for a lovely view into the canyon. The trail generally levels out for the rest of the hike. You will pass Independence Monument, Kissing Couple and the Coke Ovens just before the trail heads up the side of the canyon to Rim Rock Road.

Look for the towering sandstone monolith, snakes, lizards and golden eagles nesting in the cliffs.

7. Peticus to Tabeguache Located in Lunch Loops Access from Monument Road Approximately 1.5/3 miles with 1,000-foot elevation change Bikes and dogs welcome; no horses.

This is a quick and easy hike. The first part of the trail looks like the surface of the moon, but after turning right to head up a dry streambed, the rocks vary and some vegetation appears. At the 1.5-mile point, the

Passing through varied vegetation and around stunning rocky outcroppings gives the feeling of wilderness just minutes from downtown. It’s one of the quietest places I’ve ever been to. Look for rock climbers on the sandstone cliffs and bighorn sheep.

No bikes, horses or dogs Though it’s a long hike, the waterfall at 1.25 miles is worth making the trek. The elevation change to the first waterfall is 500 feet. Look for waterfalls, canyon tree frogs, collared lizards and aspen trees. A hike to the waterfall is a great hike for younger grandkids. Enjoy a snack or picnic lunch, and head back the way you came. ■

I’ve found that a major benefit of grandchildren is they show you a new way of seeing things (like poking a roly-poly bug with a finger to study its transformation into a tight and tiny circle, or licking the latest flavor of ice cream in total anticipation of delight). With this in mind, take your grandchildren on a trip for an unforgettable experience.

My husband and I set off to one of our favorite locations, Mesa Verde National Monument, with our two grandchildren in tow. We wanted to share this treasure with our curious and questing offspring, not just for their benefit but for ours, too: a different perspective, new challenges and renewed appreciation.

Mesa Verde requires a nine-hour, 400-mile voyage from Denver (we picked our grandkids up from the airport) to its cultural, historic and archeological wonders. So we loaded up Lola, 10, and Sean, 7, for an expedition long enough to challenge us and short enough to avoid a resemblance of purgatory.

We were realistic. No, we couldn’t expect the children to be quiet the entire way. Yes, we knew distractions had to be planned. No, we had no hopes of a clean car interior, hands, faces and clothing.

In addition, we favored human interactions over electronics. Television wasn’t an option, for our lodge had none. And we would use the portable DVD player minimally.

Each child brought a backpack of books, crayons and toys. The distractions Grandma and Grandpa supplied tended to be based on our own interests pointing out the routes traveled by pioneers and noticing areas that forest fires had decimated. These made welcome breaks in the routine and also led to conversations. Seven-

year-olds can have real conversations in which they state opinions, mull information and ask questions. Just give the kids time and a little direction. You’ll get highly original points of view while building the bonds between the generations.

We used the trip to test and try new things. We met people who spoke in other languages (teaching the kids that America is not the center of the world) and we learned life lessons through observations of human behavior (like the impact and irresponsibility of littering). Lessons like these broadened the children’s knowledge and experience.

We entertained ourselves playing games like Clue. In the car, long-beloved activities like car bingo, nonsense songs and license plate sightings all passed the time in positive ways. I hardly dared suggesting one pastime: reading aloud. I feared the kids would think it was a chore. But remembering their parents’ fascination three decades before with a narration of “The Great Brain,” I wanted to try. I didn’t have to. Lola brought Harry Potter books and read one to all of us, thereby providing entertainment, improving her reading skills, and making Sean eager to try reading subsequent volumes by himself.

Our four-day adventure was chock full of fun, exercise, new sights and experiences and a few disagreements from which we all learned. Sean challenged himself to climb tall ladders; Lola became an expert at detective work. None of us will forget the deer nibbling grass right outside the lodge room or the eerie yet exhilarating fog that spread over the landscape one morning.

Best of all, we became closer with our family’s next generation, and they learned more about us. As Sean said at the conclusion of our trip, “Grandpa is my new best friend.”

What can beat a result like that? ■

Sharing high school memories GJHS class of ’61 gears up for 55th reunion

F

all seems to kindle the urge to go back to school, or at least reconnect with old high school pals, and Grand Junction High School’s class of 1961 will be out in force, hopes reunion organizer Paula Marasco White.

“We had a great turnout for the 50th reunion,” White said, “but as we get older it gets harder to travel, and many of our classmates have passed on. Still, we’d like to see as many return for the 55th as possible, which will take place at the end of September.”

White has attended every reunion and said each year is more enjoyable.

She and a group of local classmates meet monthly at various restaurants, giving her and the others a chance to get to know people she may have known during high school only in passing. The class was large, with 400-plus members, so she tended to know some quite well, recognize more and not know many at all.

Getting together now has allowed her to make a whole group of “new” friends.

Dave Hoyt is one of those friends who meets with his classmates monthly. He has also attended every high school reunion.

“I didn’t participate in sports or anything,” he said. “My goal was to

graduate and go to work.”

Therefore, the high school reunions have helped him reconnect and visit with people he went to school with.

Mary Ann West Doyle’s mother taught at GJHS and her grandson graduated as a Tiger, so attending the school is a family tradition. Doyle mostly remembers the closeness and fun she shared with classmates. She went on to work as an office manager for a construction company for many years, yet she still pursues art, an interest that was sparked in high school when she was a member of the art club. She also belonged to National Honor Society.

Rawlene Laurent Bainter also looks forward to the reunion. She remembers how much spirit the class and the school had, especially for all the sports events, which were always standing room only. In those days girls were not allowed to wear pants, not even when on out-of-town trips for school.

However, “I remember Marion Jacobs, the orchestra and band director saying that they would bend the rules and let the girls wear

long trousers on the bus for out-oftown trips ONLY if we wore girdles under our trousers.”

Now there’s a memory that’s a blast from the past.

Bainter has spoken to many former classmates who have said, “Why should I go? I don’t have anything in common with the class and there were so many cliques.” Her advice to them: “We have all, including you, grown up and matured since then.

Please come join us and enjoy the camaraderie.”

All reunion events will take place at the Bookcliff Country Club, just west of Horizon Drive on G Road.

The informal mixer takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 30, and the more dressy Saturday buffet dinner also starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a dance. Cost for the mixer is $25 per person and the dinner is $50 per person.

orld-class museums stand shoulder to shoulder with flower markets festooned by rainbows of color. People crowded into cafes and pubs chat and sip coffee and watch the passing traffic, which consists of as many bicycles as automobiles.

This is the setting in one of the greatest small cities in the world, which is the capital of one of the smallest countries in Europe. But anything that the Netherlands may lack in dimension, being only about half the size of Maine, it more than makes up in diversity.

First-time visitors soon understand why the name Netherlands, which means “lower countries,” fits. Much of the land has been reclaimed from the North Sea and lakes, and more than one-quarter of the pancake-flat area is beneath sea level. It’s protected by an elaborate drainage system of canals, dikes and pumping stations.

Windmills pump water back over the dikes, as well as mill flour and other grains.

Amsterdam offers appeals that would make a much larger metropolis proud. A web of 17th-century canals crisscross the city, and boat tours are a popular way to take in many sights. Elegant homes that were built by wealthy residents during the 17th century “Golden Age” overlook the canals and cobblestone streets.

Belying Amsterdam’s modest size are more than 70 museums, ranging from world-class to intimate. The

Rijksmuseum, the country’s national showplace, houses the most extensive collection of Dutch paintings in the world. The 17th-century exhibit includes nearly two dozen Rembrandts, enough alone to warrant a visit.

A priceless collection of works by Rembrandt also resides in the Rembrandthuis, where the artist lived from 1639 to 1658. My favorite was the “View of Amsterdam,” which was painted in 1640 and depicts a row of windmills lined up like soldiers in formation.

The Van Gogh Museum contains the largest number of masterpieces by that renowned artist. They include about 200 paintings and 500 drawings.

Much smaller, yet certainly as well known, is the Anne Frank House. In this narrow townhouse, the young Jewish girl hid with her family for more than two years during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Among items on view are Anne’s hand-written diaries.

Her observations and reminiscences, some heartening, others chilling, have been translated into more than 50 languages.

Village charm Among the many reasons to enjoy what Amsterdam has to offer, there are many more that warrant visits to several of the country’s rural villages.

Their tranquil charms and laid-back personality present a different, yet equally as appealing, face.

Delft was once the world center for production of graceful Royal Delft Pottery, with 32 factories that produced ceramics with the distinctive blue and white colors. While only one factory remains, the town also has buildings dating from as early as the 13th century, along with museums, markets and other attractions.

The area around IJsselmeer Lake is dotted with inviting old towns, including the fishing villages of Monnickendam, Marken and Volendam, the cheese town Edam and historic Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Stavoren, A different experience awaits visitors to Giethoorn, a village that is reached by water and prohibits the use of cars. Locals traverse the four miles of canals in small flat-bottom boats, and many farmhouses have a thatched roof dating back to the 18th century.

A contrasting atmosphere is encountered in Maastricht, a city of about 120,000 residents at the southernmost tip of the Netherlands. It combines some of the best features of the country with touches of France and Belgium. The result is an enticing amalgam of history, sightseeing and activities.

The people exhibit the characteristic Dutch friendliness and dry sense of humor. The joie de vivre of the French is evident in crowded cafes, tempting patisseries and boutiques displaying the latest Paris fashions.

Even the surrounding countryside provides a different touch. It resembles the rolling hills of nearby

Belgium more than the flat lowlands characteristic of most of the Netherlands.

Residents of Maastricht revel in their city’s reputation as a place for fun and frivolity. They’re quick to point out the statue of the Spirit of Maas, a dancing sprite that combines a look of joy with a hint of naughtiness. They also note that their town contains a church for every week of the year, but a bar for every day.

At the same time, locals take pride in their city’s history and reminders of its past. It has some 1,450 historic buildings and monuments. Most are crowded into the town center. The mid-17th century Stadhuis (city hall) boasts an interesting interior decorated with Brussels tapestries and painted ceilings.

The medieval Basilica of St. Servatius was begun in the sixth century, making it the oldest house of worship in the Netherlands. Of particular interest is the largest bell in the country, a 150,000-pound clanger affectionately called “Grameer” (Grandmother), and ancient crypts.

Even a local hotel, the Derlon, has its claim to fame, with an archeological area in the basement which spans several centuries. On view are sections of a pre-Roman cobblestone road, part of a second-century Roman square, and the remains of a wall and gate from the fourth century.

Companion planting can mean different things. It can mean combining plants that mutually benefit each other by balancing the pests and predators, visually improving the landscape, or increasing yields in a vegetable garden.

For example, marigolds planted in the vegetable garden ward off insect pests.

A three sisters garden is where the corn becomes a trellis for beans, the beans provide nitrogen for the corn and the squash’s large leaves are used to shade out weeds. In the landscape, planting a ground cover under trees and shrubs conserves water, restricts weed growth and shades roots. While there is no scientific evidence to support many of the plant associations, there are still many benefits to these combinations.

Research different ways to use companion planting to your advantage.

Keep good records and a close eye on what works and what doesn’t.

Q. How late can I apply fertilizer to my lawn, landscape trees and shrubs?

Fertilizing your lawn in the fall is one of the best things you can do for it. In Colorado, timing of fertilization applications is crucial. For deciduous trees and shrubs, apply a complete fertilizer that has the approximate ratio of three parts nitrogen, one part phosphorous and one part potassium after the leaves have dropped off so the plant is able to harden off properly. Evergreens such as pines, spruces and firs could also benefit from fertilization. Late season fertilization should be done when the grass is still green and growing, which is usually until mid-November. To avoid burning the lawn, you must water right after applying the fertilizer. Do not use a slow release fertilizer for the fall application. Cooling soil tempera-

Fall is my favorite time of year, so I appreciate flowers like the Maximilian sunflower that choose this time of the year to bloom. This towering perennial requires full sun, moderate watering and good drainage, and can reach up to eight feet tall and Photo by High Country Gardens spread four feet across. Bright yellow blossoms unfurl on the top half and the deep green foliage is attractive all season long. This sunflower puts on a show mid-September through the end of October. It looks great against a fence or wall but it can also be an effective specimen plant in the open landscape. Deer and rabbits don’t bother the sunflower but birds love the seeds, and bees and butterflies love the nectar and pollen. Cut back the stalks after blooming for a tidier appearance through the winter and early spring. Dried flower heads can be left on the ground for the birds.

I have heard from long-time gardeners that USDA hardiness zones mean very little in Colorado because of our elevation changes and microclimates throughout the state. But for those who need a bit more guidance for planting, Colorado State University Extension has created a local hardiness zone map to show the temperature differences at different altitudes. The Grand Valley is in USDA Zone 7A and the surrounding areas in Mesa County are from 6A to 6B. The higher in elevation, the lower the zone.

Keep in mind these are only

guidelines for winter hardiness and temperatures vary from year to year.

I would not count on 7A plants to do well in Grand Junction in the long term. My advice is to use the zone maps for guidance and talk to your local extension office or garden center staff to find out which plants are truly hardy in your area. ■

Home to our heritage: Museum of

Western Colorado celebrates 50 years of growth

By Carrie Kellerby “Mesa County has a lot to be proud of,” said Peter Booth, executive director of the Museums of Western Colorado. “This is the largest multi-disciplinary museum on the Western Slope. It’s because of the community’s support that we are as successful as we are. ” Speaking of success, the museum has celebrated over five decades of it, having celebrated its 50th anniversary in May. Booth went on to say that the value of an institution like the museum, also known by locals as Museum of the West, is directly linked to its relationship with the community.

“This venue helps create an important sense of identity, and self-awareness,” he said, “but not just for the people who grew up here, for newcomers, too.”

And that requires seeing the big picture, maintaining diversified offerings, and anticipating the future needs of the population it serves.

Timeline of growth During the course of its history, the museum has seen some changes.

Plans for a museum began in 1949, but didn’t get off the ground until the opening of the Museum of Arts

and Sciences in the former Whitman School in 1966. The museum earned its first accreditation in 1971 by the American Alliance of Museums—the second museum in Colorado to qualify for this professional certification.

This success was capped in 2009 when the museum received its fourth accreditation, placing it in the top 1 percent of museums nationwide.

In 1980, the museum acquired Cross Orchards through a community fundraising effort. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and now includes a restored farm and several other exhibits, including the largest collection of rolling stock for the historic Uintah Railroad.

In the 1980s, the museum also entered into a collaborative agreement with the Bureau of Land Management to co-manage the Rabbit Valley Natural Research Area. The Trail Through Time, a 1.5-mile interpretive walking trail, was one of the results of that relationship. Dinosaur Hill near Fruita and the Fruita Paleontological Area is also co-managed by the museum and the BLM. The museum also owns Riggs Hill, where Elmer S. Riggs found Brachiosaurus remains in 1900.

Another momentous expansion

took place in the 1980s when the museum opened Dinosaur Valley on Main Street. This popular attraction moved to Fruita in 2000 after the museum acquired the former Dinosaur Discovery Center, and the new site was rechristened Dinosaur Journey.

Two Rivers Chautauqua The 11th annual Two Rivers Chautauqua on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 at Cross Orchards Historic Site, 3073 F Road in Grand Junction. Home to our heritage Currently, over 100,000 people participate in the museum’s various programs and facilities, making it the third largest tourist attraction in Mesa County. As Booth pointed out, tourism is a part of the continuing vitality and viability of the region and the museum’s success is also the community’s success. If it wasn’t for the museums, 3,000 oral history interviews wouldn’t exist, its historic artifacts would probably be in Denver, and the archeological and paleontological finds would either be in Cortez, Denver or Salt Lake City.

“Our heritage would not belong to us. It would belong to someone else,” Booth said.

But Booth is not complacent about the museum’s achievements. He has hopes for the future, including the expansion of Dinosaur Journey’s heritage component to meet the growing draw of visitors to the Fruita area, and the development of the museum’s online resources for research and information. The Museum of the West is committed to its mission to serve the Western Slope community and looks forward to a future that could be as bright as its past.

nyone hiking the Colorado canyons with regularity will stumble across Paleolithic rock art or old cowboy and mining camps. The rock of the Four Corners area is the perfect canvas for rock art, and canyons protected from the weather have the best chance of preserving the detritus of past generations.

One Grand Junction club is passionate about not only viewing these tangible signs of past inhabitants, but also preserving them for future generations to enjoy. The Grand Junction chapter of the Colorado Archeological Society (CAS-GJ) is a place for those who love the past, the outdoors and adventure in equal measure.

“Someone gets excited about a place and we plan a field trip there,” said the club’s founder, Doug Van Etten. “There was a recent trip to the Palisade Rim, just above the town of

Palisade. The trail is a four-mile loop, with rock art at about the two-mile point. Ten people went on that hike.”

Another group just went to Rabbit Valley.

“We hiked all the way to the river,” Van Etten said.

Alan Green, a 25-year veteran with the Division of Wildlife Resources in Utah who just moved to Grand Junction, led a larger trip to Cedar Mesa in Blanding, Utah.

“I was involved with the archeological society there, but this one is a lot more fun,” Green said. “There’s so much going on.”

With this vibrant and active group, field trips abound.

“This is a great way to get involved,” Arlene Connelly said. “There are usually three or four things to do in a week, depending on the hiking conditions. Spring and fall are ideal times to go. And there are speakers at the monthly meetings, like instructional talks or Native Americans who do storytelling.”

With her background in mapping, computer science and GPS, she shares her knowledge freely with the group, but everyone’s contributions make it an even richer experience.

“Everyone brings their own expertise,” Shepherd said. “Some are experts at rocks and point out what tools were used on them at a mine site. Others are interested in plants and can show which ones were used for food or medicine.”

3 aspects to studying local history Archeology looks at the signs left behind. Signs of past cultures can be either ancient, like the Anasazi, or more recent, like trappers and miners in the 1800s.

Anthropology is the study of peoples within their society. What did these people eat? How did they live?

How did their society work?

Paleontology is the study of the remains of extinct life. Think dinosaur bones and fossilized plants.

There is considerable overlap

in these three areas and due to Western Colorado’s landscape and its surrounding environment, the CASGJ has access to all.

“I’ve lived in western Colorado all my life,” he said. “Ninety percent of all rock art is here in the Four Corners area. There’s 12,000 years of history out there.”

John Schultz added, “You can’t help but run into it. But when people were settling the West, they weren’t taught to respect it.”

Fortunately, organizations like the Bureau of Land Management help protect this art. Site stewards work closely with the BLM to make sure known sites are not being damaged or looted by visitors, although some deterioration is inevitable due to erosion, weather and rock wall splay.

“You don’t need to attend a class go to on a field trip,” Van Etten clarified, “but you do need to join the club to be able to go,” because club members must sign a code of ethics agreement, assenting not to disclose the locations of these fragile sites.

The newest, growing chapter in the state There has been a Colorado Archaeological Society for over 80 years with local chapters across Colorado, but nothing in Grand Junction for more than 15 years.

“There are 11 chapters statewide, but the closest one was in Montrose until Doug [Van Etten] started

this one a year and a half ago,” said current CAS-GJ President Ike Rakiecki.

In the spring of 2015, Van Etten invited a few people to a meeting to gauge interest in starting a chapter here in Grand Junction. Word spread quickly.

“Over 100 people showed up to the first meeting,” Rakiecki said. “We had to move to a bigger room. There was this immediate energy—this excitement. We elected an interim board that June and already this year we were tapped to host the annual statewide conference of the Colorado Archeological Society.” ■

State convention October 7-10 This year, the Grand Junction chapter is hosting the CAS annual meeting at the Colorado Mesa University Ballroom.

Saturday’s keynote speaker is Dr. Steve Lekson, curator of anthropology at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History.

Cost of attendance depends on the activities attendees wish to participate in. About 20 field trips with varying destinations and lengths are offered.

“This is a fascinating area archeologically,” Rakiecki said. “It’s so much fun to learn about and meet others who are like-minded. It’s amazing to learn about a site, then go see it for myself.”

Empowering women with Beauty and Brains

H

ave you heard the recent news story about a woman who unexpectedly lost her husband and was removed from her home by his adult children so they could sell the house? One day she lived in a beautiful house, and the next day she was left with nothing but the clothes on her back.

Grand Junction resident Linda Wethington, who has worked for Mutual of Omaha for many years, has seen too many of these unfortunate stories. One client lost her husband after he broke his hip, and the proper things for her weren’t in place. After his passing, she struggled, making only $300 a month.

“One thing I found over and over was that women were ending up destitute in their later years,” Wethington said. “It didn’t matter if they had great incomes, or if their husband had a great income. Women were not asking questions about what they had, or understanding what they had.”

She has had clients who were unaware of things such as insurance,

investments or even balancing a checkbook. She said these days it’s important to ask questions because so many people don’t have a pension or a retirement.

“If you don’t educate yourself and ask questions, you might not know that you’re not going down the right path,” she said.

Wethington is on a mission to help people reach their potential and succeed. In order to further her mission, she started the Beauty and Brains Workshop in March 2016.

“I have learned that women really do want to learn more about finance,” she said. “By taking the mysteries and scariness out, they are receptive.”

The hour-long Beauty and Brains Workshops meet once a month with a different topic. Wethington invites community members and female specialists in the community to present the programs.

One recent workshop taught women important tips regarding transitioning back into the workplace. It covered such things as putting together a proper resume, interview techniques and how to

dress appropriately for the workplace.

Wethington said that all of the workshops are powerful, and at the conclusion, there is a dove release, thanks to Nancy Adams from Rocky Mountain Love Doves. Attendees write down something troubling or blocking, then they tear it up and release the birds.

Wethington works with a whole team of organizers with the Beauty and Brains Workshops, including Allison Brinkely, community liaison with FirstLight Home Care.

“The women we work with and have met along the way are wonderful,” Brinkely said. “I enjoy offering an opportunity to share and inspire each other. I learn new things at every workshop, from handling my finances to styling my hair.”

Tamara Ruckdeschel of Events 4 You and Apex Momentum Business Development, LLC, has been a presenter and is part of the Workshop’s founding team. She said so far, there has been a positive response from workshop participants.

“The people who attend pause and really consider things that they didn’t consider, or they were procrastinating on,” Ruckdeschel said.

learned a lot from taking part in the workshops. “I’m not as financially prepared for retirement as I thought I was. At least not to the level that makes me comfortable.”

Now she’s on her way to getting all of her ducks in a row.

September 21 at the KAFM Radio building, 1310 Ute. Ave. and will share with you everything you want to know about real estate.

In October, there will be a special event to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with presenters and tables hosted by local business owners.

Addressing today’s tech issues Talking Digital, By Adam Cochran

I

haven’t been a full-time computer support guy in years, but I continue to stay on top of the problems that are plaguing computer users today.

Having an expertise in computers is similar to knowing how to work on cars or being a physician. I don’t expect that I will ever be able to attend a party or go to church without somebody bringing up a tech question.

Whenever there is a trending problem in the world of technology, I know about it right away because my phone starts ringing with calls from friends, relatives and former clients asking for help.

Here are two issues that I have been contacted about a lot over the past year and what you should know about them.

ISSUE 1: Must I upgrade to Windows 10?

You don’t need to upgrade. If you do upgrade, you will be fine. Windows 10 is a solid operating system and it runs well.

Windows 10 is essentially an apology to Windows 8 users. Microsoft returned features that they removed, hid or drastically altered in Windows 8. In other words, Windows 10 is a version of Windows 8 that looks and runs like Windows 7 and Windows XP. There are no more problems with Windows, 10 than there were with any of Microsoft’s better versions of Windows including Windows 98, XP and 7. It’s not a lemon. It also isn’t life-changing if you missed your opportunity to get the free upgrade. There are still ways of getting the Windows 10 upgrade free, but I would probably recommend that you just keep your current version of Windows until you need to replace your computer.

ISSUE 2: Fake security or virus alerts or phone calls At least twice a week, I hear of someone who received a phone call or alert screen on their computer notifying them that they have a virus or other problem with their computer security.

If you receive a phone call from anyone, including someone who says they’re from Microsoft or your Internet provider, telling you that your computer has an infection it’s a scam.

You can feel absolute confidence that your computer is fine. Hang up the phone.

Even if the person knows your name or other personal information, hang up.

Most of these people just gather such details from online databases and use that to build trust.

The same is usually true with security alerts you get when clicking on a link in Google or your email. If the alert asks you to call a phone number to fix the problem, don’t do it—it’s a scam.

If you can’t close down the alert, turn off your computer by holding the power button for 15 seconds and turn it back on. Everything will most likely be back to normal once your computer reboots.

I guess the theme for this month’s column is always be skeptical before listening to warnings from anyone.

You’ve probably heard that Windows 10 is a terrible program with tons of problems and you will likely get a scam phone call or fake security alert on your computer in the near future.

Keep in mind that it’s usually cheaper to have a virus or security issue fixed by someone locally than it is to give a bad guy your credit card number. ■

tarting young is key. Money you set aside now to send your new grandbaby to college someday obviously has the best chance of growing into something substantial.

Depending on how you do it, it can also minimize your taxable estate when you pass away.

You may already know that you and your spouse can each give $14,000 per year to any number of recipients, without causing them any tax liability (and at the same time you are reducing your taxable estate). By the time your grandchild reaches college age, you’ve created a nice financial package.

You can also pay unlimited medical and tuition expenses for him or her without incurring any gift tax issues for yourself, as long as you pay the amounts directly to the health care provider or the school.

This is true even for preschool, and for a child of any age.

It’s generally better to give the money for your grandchild’s college needs to his or her parents, assuming you feel secure doing that.

Why? Because students are expected to contribute 20 percent of their own assets toward college. Parents, however, are only expected to give 5.6 percent of their assets.

So if need-based aid is a factor, the grandchild would qualify for more financial assistance if the parents have the funds you provide.

A 529 plan A 529 college savings plan allows you to sock money away now and let it grow, tax-free as long as the money is later used for higher education. Currently these plans are sponsored by 48 states and Washington, DC. If the child is young, you may think there’s plenty of time to start such a fund.

But college costs are enormous today and growing. For the 201516 school year, the average cost of a four-year public in-state college was over $9,410, while a private college was over $32,405 according to “Trends in College Pricing, 2015,” put out by the College Board.

What are your options for a 529 plan? If your grandchild’s parents already have a 529 established, you can contribute to it. There’s little for you to do in terms of managing the account, but you also have no control over the account. Also, as noted above, money in a plan that belongs to the grandparents will later be considered owned by the student, and that will make the student eligible for less financial aid based on need.

Or you can set up an account yourself and name your grandchild as the beneficiary. You choose where to open the account, whether to handle it yourself or use a broker or other financial institution, and how aggressively to invest the money. However, if your child applies for financial aid, a plan owned by the grandparents could affect his or her ability to qualify for needbased aid. The federal rules that determine eligibility look at 529 plan funds from a grandparent-owned account as being “untaxed income” to the student. Merit-based scholarships would not generally be affected by contributions from the grandparents or the parents.

A viable alternative, if you want to maintain control in the early years, is to open the account in your name and later, transfer ownership to the grandchild’s parents.

If you’re still working, you may be able to contribute to a plan through a payroll deduction. The maximum you can contribute overall to most

he minute I was born, I automatically became part of a small, close-knit group called PKs, which stood for “preacher’s kid.”

It’s fun to meet another PK because they immediately understand your childhood without ever having known you. Some have taken the PK lifestyle with a grain of salt and nothing out of the ordinary, while others go wild or rebel. It’s not always easy, but the good prevails.

All PKs talk about the glass bubble, which means you’re constantly scrutinized by other people. Whether you know them or not, they know who you are. People quietly point you out, and silently critique how you’re dressed. They pay attention to your house and its furnishings, your car and toys, assessing whether the church is paying you too much or not.

As a child, I secretly wished my dad was an accountant or a plumber. Maybe it’s because I’ve always been extra sensitive, or perhaps it was just my imagination, but I swear my friends’ parents always

put out a Bible on the coffee table before I came over.

I envisioned them watching how we acted during church and nudging their kids to behave like us PKs. (If only they knew that Mom always sat between my brother and me to avoid any possible disturbance.)

I heard kids tell each other to watch what they say when I was around. I wish they wouldn’t have.

I felt sheltered and naive. How else was I supposed to learn what every other teenager knew?

Church was our social life as well as our spiritual place. It was somewhere we were expected to go without question, but I didn’t mind because it was where my friends were. Church was where our “family” was.

Christmastime brought perks.

Large baskets of fruit were delivered as well as platters of fudge and cookies. No household I knew got more Christmas cards than we did (or as many dry fruitcakes).

To this day, when people discover that I’m a PK, they assume I’ve memorized the Bible word for word, and can provide insight on the meaning of any passage. Have a question about the Bible?

Back in the day when pastors were the preachers, teachers, counselors, finance directors, staff and facility managers, conflict controllers and worship organizers, the hours Dad worked were unimaginable. Fridays and Sunday afternoons were his only time off, My family - 1968 and now

and they were often interrupted.

I looked forward to Fridays after school when Dad would save errands for my brother and me to run with him. Sunday afternoons meant watching the Packers (Behave, Broncos fans; I grew up in Wisconsin) or playing sports together.

One PK I met recently told me that as a child he found out that the way people got to see his dad was to make an appointment. So he marched into the church to set one up. He just wanted time with his dad. Sadly, his dad wasn’t amused.

It was tough to share Dad with hundreds of other people. The phone rang so much during dinnertime over the years that when I was a teenager Mom finally took it off the hook when we sat down to eat. Did people forget my dad had a family he went home to just like they did? Selfishly, I wanted him to myself once he walked through the door. Dinner together was the most treasured part of each day.

It takes a special person to be a

pastor, and especially in the ’60s, it took a special woman to be a pastor’s wife. Mom was considered “part of the package” and assumed roles for free, like choir director. It didn’t occur to me until adulthood that while I was craving Dad’s time and attention, I’m sure my mom was, too.

Dad did many things right when it came to his little PKs. Although I was always on guard that he would use us kids as sermon material, he never did. He never told us to stop riding our bikes to come see him at church, or to stop snatching candy off the church secretary’s desk.

Money was always tight, but he and Mom set aside two weeks every summer at a cabin on a lake in northern Wisconsin. With great patience, he taught me to fish, and we swam and took walks in the woods.

Those two weeks were the best, in part, because he was just my dad.

Not all hungry people live in faraway places

I

magine having to choose between food and medicine, and paying the rent or heating bill. Every day, Mesa County residents have to make these impossible choices. The Community Food Bank (CFB) is their lifeline.

CFB aims to aid the newly unemployed, seniors living on fixed incomes, minimum-wage earners holding down multiple jobs, veterans, disabled persons and single-parent families.

“We’re an emergency food bank,” CFB Director Darcy Johnson said.

“We’re here to help people in crisis, usually a financial crisis of some sort. If they can get food today, they will be able to focus on the crisis

at hand and not have to worry about how they are going to feed their family.”

Twenty percent of CFB clients are over age 50, and a rising number are taking care of their grandchildren. Approximately 20,000 families receive food boxes each year, translating to 180,000 meals. Each food box provides healthy food for the household for several days.

“We’ve had people come in and just burst into tears because it’s the first time they’ve had to do something like this,” Johnson said. “Clients can come up to nine times in a calendar year for food assistance.”

said the average is two to three times per year.

“That tells us that people are coming here when they are really desperate,” CFB Board President Biff Messinger, 68, said. “We feel confident that those who come here truly need the food. We like to think we give our families an opportunity to be productive and give back, and I think we do that.”

A generous community In 1978, a group of churches and organizations came together to study hunger. Though world hunger was their original focus, it quickly shifted closer to home. After identifying a gap in services for the hungry locally, CFB was formed.

The gracious hearts of community members are crucial, as CFB serves based on need, not income, meaning CFB is unable to receive help through government grants.

“People’s generosity with food, money and volunteering allows [CFB] to exist,” Messinger said.

CFB averages 40 volunteers at any given time—a group largely made up of seniors, Johnson said. Many CFB clients have chosen to payback the community’s kindness by volunteering.

While CFB’s largest food item donor remains anonymous, churches and local business are also big donors.

Community food drives are an important source of provisions for CFB, which has information about holding a successful food drive available to the public.

“We need free food,” Messinger

said. “It’s good to have discounted food to buy, but we count on the food collected at food drives.”

People often confuse CFB with Food Bank of the Rockies, which is a regional organization that supplies agencies like CFB with food at a discounted rate.

“They serve agencies where we serve individuals,” Johnson said.

“Our whole goal is to get food as cheaply as we can. We always use donated food first.”

All CFB donations stay in Mesa County.

The big move Recently CFB lost its housing in a county building downtown, where it was paying just $120 per month for 7,000 square feet.

Finding a new location with that kind of deal was rendered impossible after inspecting 80 properties across the valley. So CFB settled into their new home at 562 W. Crete Circle, behind Sam’s Club, with less than half the space for a much higher rent.

With increased operation costs, CFB is in need of donations more than ever before. Seniors urge politicians: Take stand on Social Security

E

ntitlement reform is a hotly debated issue, especially during presidential elections. But once in office, officials rarely want to touch what some call the “third rail” of U.S. politics.

The last time Social Security was adjusted to ensure long-term solvency was during the Reagan administration.

In response, AARP has launched a national campaign, Take A Stand (takeastand.aarp.org).

Bob Murphy, state director for AARP Colorado, said it’s time to get politicians to commit to making Social Security a priority and put concrete proposals on the table to safeguard the program.

“We want to try to achieve a solution for Social Security solvency sooner rather than later,” Murphy said. “It’s not going to get any easier, it’s not going to get any less expensive if we continue to kick this can down the road.”

Murphy explained the goal is to get all candidates seeking national office to lay out at least one plan that would make Social Security financially sound so future generations get adequate benefits.

He stressed that AARP isn’t advocating for any particular plan or candidate, but said now is the time to move the program into the 21st century.

Murphy noted keeping Social Security strong also makes good business sense. The program contributes $20 billion annually in Colorado, according to AARP’s most recent research.

He added that if public officials don’t take action, future retirees could lose up to $10,000 a year.

He said those cuts would be devastating for the vast majority of the state’s recipients who get by on an average of $1,200 a month.

“Social Security is a program that works,” he said. “Americans pay into it, and they certainly are expecting to rely on Social Security for some or, in some cases, all of their retirement living.”

Murphy predicted that, since Colorado is set to be a battleground state again in November, the campaign is in a good position to press candidates at every level to commit to a serious conversation about how to keep Social Security strong, now and for future generations. ■

Make a difference in the life of a child by encouraging a growth mindset

By Kathy Applebee “Suzy, what a marvelous cartwheel! You’re a natural gymnast.”

“All As and Bs! I’m not surprised because you’re smart.”

Don’t these sound like supportive, nurturing comments from a wonderful grandparent?

Maybe but maybe not, according to Stanford University Psychology Professor Carol Dweck. Instead of building a foundation of self-esteem that can boost children to even greater accomplishments, decades of research found that comments like these may be setting them up for failure when academic and other challenges become tougher.

Dweck’s book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” explains in detail. Here’s the short version.

Telling Suzy she is a natural gymnast implies that to be marvelous, she need not work hard or practice.

If she has to do either, she lacks talent. If this were true, then Michael Jordan would have never made it in college sports or grown as a player to become an NBA superstar.

Jordan was cut from his high school team. Instead of quitting basketball, he worked harder to improve his game.

The same is true in academics.

When students perceive intelligence as a fixed asset (think IQ score), they are more likely to steer away from harder subjects like higher-level science and math. “If I were smart enough, I’d get this right away.”

Children, who have what Dweck calls growth mindsets, believe if they keep trying, eventually they will be successful. While this is not true in every case, persistence can beat out natural talent.

How can grandparents encourage growth mindsets when children are successful? Let’s tweak the statements that began this article.

“Suzy, what a marvelous cartwheel. I can tell you practice.

There’s no telling what you’ll be doing with more training.”

“All As and Bs! I’m not surprised because I know you work hard in class and read books at home to learn new things.”

Praising qualities that children can control, like effort or not backing down after failure, will help them when things don’t come easily. They’re less likely to be overwhelmed by a setback. And everyone who sets challenging goals will encounter obstacles and setbacks.

Can adults address a child’s failure in a positive way? Absolutely! When Thomas Edison experienced over 900 “failures” in his pursuit of a long-lasting light bulb he quipped, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” His electric pen never found widespread use but the technology behind it led to the invention of the mimeograph machine, an office staple until copiers became standard.

Your grandson didn’t make the high school basketball team. Which would help develop a growth mindset and succeed later? a. What an unlucky break. b. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team. Let’s read together about what he did after that. Maybe that will help you next time. c. That coach is a jerk! d. You just aren’t tall enough. Maybe you should try out for soccer.

Your granddaughter complains that biology is hard. You tell her… a. Girls don’t do well in science and math. Focus on being pretty. b. Stop complaining. You have to have it to get into a good college. c. I don’t understand. You‘re smart. d. That’s a good sign. If it was easy, you wouldn’t be learning as much.

If you choose b-a-d, you’re g-o-o-d at encouraging others to be the best they can be.

How you talk to students (and even other adults) can have a profound impact on how much they achieve and how easily they give up. Reassure them that becoming smarter is preferable to being smart.

If they seem likely to give up, point out examples like Jordan and Edison. Ask your student to share contemporary examples with you of people who accepted challenges.

(The Paralympics follow the Summer Olympics from September 7 to 18, and are bound to have inspirational stories.)

Not only will you be setting them up for success later, you’ll enjoy meaningful conversation. Not sure how to start? Don’t wait for a stroke of genius; just give it your best shot and continue until encouraging a growth mindset is second nature.

In the words of Edison, “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” ■

25 years of Colorado Mountain Winefest

E

verything gets better with age, including the wine and the fun at Colorado Mountain Winefest.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Colorado Mountain Winefest takes place September 15-18 in Palisade. This year’s festival will host several events, including a Wine, Dine & Paint event at The Palette, scenic bus tours across premium wine regions, gourmet cider pairings, VIP wine tasting, “SOMM” documentary screening, chocolate and wine tastings, a grape growing seminar, farmers market and festival in the park.

Twenty-five years ago, calling the Grand Valley “wine country” was unheard of. It was not until 1978 that the wine industry was resurrected in Colorado. Today there are over 140 wineries in Colorado and in recent years, the Western Slope has proven to be a contender when it comes to producing award-winning bottles of wine.

“It’s inspiring to see how much this event and industry has grown in the past quarter-century,” CAVE Executive Director Cassidee Shull said. “We are seeing attendees travel from all over the world to experience Mountain Winefest and Colorado wine, and it’s simply amazing.”

Winefest is coordinated by the Colorado Association for Viticulture & Enology (CAVE), a member-based nonprofit that promotes the interests of Colorado grape growers and wineries in political matters, provides a forum for exchange of ideas, and disseminates current information pertaining to optimum winemaking and agriculture practices for vineyards of Colorado.

A penny mentality in America

had just parked my car in a city parking lot when I heard the cries of a loud voice.

“Sir, please give me a penny!

Please just a penny,” he pled.

I continued to walk because I do not like being verbally accosted by a stranger. I was in an unfamiliar part of town and felt spooked by his sudden appearance.

I have been asked for a dollar hundreds of times from street beggars but never a penny. I thought to myself, “Wow, how low can a guy go?” On many occasions I have handed people a couple of dollars or $5. Never have I been asked for a penny.

Once my family and I stopped at a light and this man was begging for money and we gave him $10.

As soon as he had it in his hand he smiled saying he now had enough for a bottle of whiskey. We shook our heads and felt like fools for helping the guy.

Once my wife and I were walking to our favorite candy store. We saw a woman eating a sandwich and a man pled for her to give it to him. She appeared to have eaten a bite or two from it. He took it right from her hands and ravished that sandwich. The guy was obviously starving.

You really never know who is a daily panhandler and who is truly suffering. Many Americans are on welfare and are sleeping on the streets or on park benches. I hope the election this fall will bring change. We must make a major stride in a different direction or we are going to lose this country.

We cannot afford more welfare, more illegal immigrants, more jobs exported out of America and a weaker military. I personally think this election is America’s defining moment in history. The Supreme Court justices that will be appoint-

ed the next four or eight years will have a major impact on the future of America.

Back to the penny beggar. I seldom have a penny but I did have a quarter. I gave the man a quarter. He immediately wanted more change.

“Wait a minute, sir, you said you wanted a penny.”

“Yes, but I need more change for a bottle of water,” he pled.

The man looked to be in his late 20s. I was beginning to think of handing him $5 or maybe even $10.

But I asked him, “Why aren’t you working a job?”

Without missing a beat he replied, “I can’t work a job because I would lose my check.”

“What? You would lose your check?”

I then asked him how much he received each month and he said, “Seven hundred and some dollars.”

“Sir,” I replied, “You could make more money if you would just work as hard as you are begging me and others for money.”

He actually nodded his head and agreed.

I did not give him any more money. Maybe I should have but his attitude of “I will not work because I prefer to subsist on government assistance” has become too prevalent in America.

We cannot live on pennies and welfare in America. This is not real life. It’s time for a change. It’s time for real jobs to come back to America. It’s time for us to defend our borders, build up our military and repair our infrastructure. We have to get off this status quo lifestyle of mediocrity and being comfortable in poverty. This is not the America our parents built. We can’t go from a dollar mentality to a penny mentality because after this, there is no lower to go. ■
