Volunteering If you’re single and retired, get out of the house and volunteer. It’s good for you even if you’re not single. You can find other people that are devoted to a cause, just as much as you are.

Events/Festivals (like BeaconFest) Locals love our farmers markets, concerts, theatre, fundraisers, expos and big events. A wide variety of people attend these events, so there are many “fish in the sea.”

When they gave their consent, she turned the tables on McCurley.

“It was Christmas Eve 2009,” Taylor said. “I got down on all fours and proposed to him.”

After their wedding at McCurley’s sister’s house, Mel and Mel took off for an ultimate bingo honeymoon in Las Vegas. McCurley, who holds the Grand Junction city record for jackpot winnings over $27,000, marveled at the 24-hour bingo operations in Vegas. He admitted to staying up 36 hours to take it all in.

On the surface, the relational dynamic between “the Mels” resembles a Vegas comedy act. She makes a serious comment and he follows with a humorous one-liner. But Taylor had genuine praise for her new husband.

“He listens and he has a great sense of humor,” Taylor said. “We work together as a good team. He cooks dinner Tuesday through Friday and I cook on the weekends. It was meant to be. We never fight. We’re soul mates.”

McCurley mumbled something about “cell mates,” but glanced at Taylor with a twinkle in his eye. He jokingly commented that Taylor is pretty lucky to have him, but also confided that she is easy-going.

“She’s the same person in the highs and lows,” McCurley said.

He agreed with their working arrangement, described by Taylor as “I’m the brains and he wears the pants.”

Taylor believes that one of the strengths of their relationship is that they maintain their independence as separate people.

“We are not connected at the hip,” Taylor said. “We don’t tell each other what to do.”

Taylor said she doesn’t try to “therapize” her husband.

“It doesn’t work with me anyway,” he mused.

As for bingo dates, Mel and Mel opine that the state of the economy has forced them to cut back from six nights a week to two or three. Taylor said bingo was her social center for a time and McCurley came to win

www.BeaconSeniorNews.com prize money. Now that Taylor has found her “best friend, husband and partner,” she stays home more and enjoys it.

McCurley feigned a horrified look.

“That’s a lot of responsibility. I didn’t sign on for all that. I just married you for half your winnings!”

But in a more serious tone, he put in a good word for Gold Mine Bingo.

“If you’re bored, it’s a good place to come and hide from life for a couple hours.”

Extended family Gold Mine Bingo served as the backdrop for these two modern-day love stories, with lively banter and intermittent shouts of “bingo!” as the romantic soundtrack. But at center stage of this Valentine’s tribute is an unassuming couple who rolls out the red carpet for their friends seven days a week.

Bob and Midge Williams have managed Gold Mine Bingo at 511 28-1/4 Road in Grand Junction for over seven years. Midge supervises the staff, Bob oversees maintenance and supplies, and they both share bookkeeping.

The Williams have their own love story to tell. They met when Midge was in third grade and Bob was in fifth. They moved from Orange County, California 21 years ago and settled in the Grand Valley. On February 8, 2012, the Williams will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and will leave shortly thereafter on a Caribbean cruise.

Bob describes himself as “retired,” but in the same breath will tell how he keeps the doors open for 20 bingo sessions every week.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but we really enjoy making everybody happy and comfortable. We want them to feel at home here,” Bob said. “What else would we do? Park ourselves in front of a TV?” Midge added, “Most of the people that play bingo here know each other, so it feels like extended family.

She shared the story of an elderly man whose wife passed away recently. He told Midge that if it weren’t for

his friends at Gold Mine Bingo, he would not have had any other source of emotional support. “For many people who have lost loved ones, bingo is family to them,” she said.

“We love being here because we love the people.”

She spoke of her joy at seeing a local car salesman, who recently lost his job, collect a $15,000 bingo jackpot. Midge also overheard a 70-year-old lady say that her $15,000 winnings would last her the rest of her life.

Bob and Midge shared how they and their staff worked to bring a festive atmosphere to the hall during the holiday. “We had a huge tree decorated with lights and candy canes and suckers,” Midge said. “Everything was done up in red and white.”

“We even had someone paint the glass panels in the room,” Bob said.

“And our players brought in over 300 new toys to donate to Toys for Tots.”

For New Year’s Eve, the Williams served sparkling apple cider to their customers, turned all the lights off except for the Christmas tree, and watched the countdown to 2012 on the big screen televisions mounted throughout the hall. They also distributed free raffle tickets for cash prize drawings throughout the evening.

Gold Mine Bingo hosts 13 different non profit organizations, such as Roice-Hurst Humane Society, local VFW groups and high school booster clubs. Bob bragged that Dave Hoyt helped raise $140,000 last year for the Grand Junction High School Booster Club. Bowen confirmed that the club’s bingo events have netted over $1 million in the years that he has contributed his time and efforts toward fundraising.

For those wanting a serious relationship, a cheap date, or a fun night out with friends, Bob touted the benefits of bingo.

“You can get set up for about $12 and have the chance to win a cash prize,” he said. “Sure beats the movies.” ♥

Create your own meaning for Valentine’s Day

W

hen I was in elementary school, I loved Valentine’s Day. To me, it meant a class party, giving and receiving paper valentines sporting the latest cartoon character fad, and consuming large amounts of sugar. As I got older, it meant wondering if I had the courage to tell the girl I had a crush on that I liked her, and wondering if I should buy her something special to show it. But why do we celebrate love this time of year? What is the meaning behind all the cards, candy and roses?

The origin of Valentine’s Day has a few different tales. The holiday is connected to an ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalia. According to the Roman calendar, this festival took place in the spring. The reason for holding the festival is not actually known, but some scholars believe it was to help promote fertility for the coming year. One custom of the feast was for two young men of noble birth to take strips of goat skin, called februa, and run about the streets of Rome that would be crowded with women hoping to get lashed by the februa in hopes of being better able to have children.

A more popular tale is associated with a Roman priest for whom the holiday is named after, Saint Valentine. During the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II, the Roman Empire was in need of more soldiers.

In order to help solve this problem, Emperor Claudius II made a law that marriages and engagements could no longer take place. Valentine disagreed with the Emperor’s ruling and rebelled by holding marriages in secret. He was discovered, thrown in jail and later executed. According to popular belief, Valentine was beheaded on February 14, 269 A.D., the day before Lupercalia.

A different version of the Valentine story tells of the priest helping Christians escape persecution from

Claudius II. He was put in prison, but befriended the jailer and his family. This Valentine was said to have restored the sight of the jailer’s blind daughter. The day that Valentine was executed, he sent the jailer’s daughter a goodbye note and signed it, “From your Valentine.” From this legend is how the idea of sending “valentines” first started.

So if Valentine’s Day is named after a martyr, why is Cupid a symbol of the holiday celebration? Cupid is the son of the Roman goddess of love, Venus. Also called Eros by the Greeks, he represents pure love. He is depicted as a winged cherub armed with a bow and arrow, with which he shoots the unsuspecting hearts of those who would fall in love. Cupid appeared in many Greek and Roman festivities about love. It is only fitting that he would be depicted with a holiday whose origins began in Rome.

One way people like to express their love for each other is by exchanging gifts. While Valentine’s Day gifts like flowers and candy have become the norm, there have been some different ideas on types of gifts to give a sweetheart. Gloves have been a popular gift in places like the British Isles. Jewelry is a common gift given today, but was at one point something only a well-to-do nobleman gave the woman he loved. Fancy garters are also a popular item to give. As time has passed, so has the style of gifts.

While Valentine’s Day may have a variety of different meanings, the central theme that the holiday represents doesn’t seem to change. Love is something that people have experienced and celebrated since the dawn of time. Love can be expressed in a variety of ways. However you express it is up to you. Happy Valentine’s Day. Blue Cheese Crusted Serves: 4

with Port Wine Sauce

1 T butter 1/2 c minced white onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 T chopped fresh thyme 3/4 c low-sodium beef broth 1/2 c port wine 1 T vegetable oil 4 filet mignon steaks (1-1/2 inch thick) 3/4 c crumbled blue cheese 1/4 c panko bread crumbs MELT butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and thyme. Cook, stirring constantly, until onion is tender. Stir in the beef broth, scraping any onion bits from the bottom of the pan, then stir in the port wine. Bring to a boil, and cook until the mixture has reduced to about 1/2 cup. Set aside.

PREHEAT the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat oil in oven-safe skillet over high heat.

Sear steaks quickly on both sides until brown, then place the whole pan into the oven.

ROAST steaks in the oven for about 15 minutes for medium rare with an internal temperature of 145 degrees F. Remove from the oven, and place on a baking sheet.

Stir together the panko crumbs and blue cheese. Top each steak with a layer of this mixture.

PREHEAT oven to 450 degrees F. Butter and flour four 4-oz. ramekins or custard cups. In the top half of a double boiler set over simmering water, heat the butter and the chocolate until chocolate is almost completely melted.

BEAT eggs, egg yolks and sugar together until light colored and thick.

BEAT together the melted chocolate and butter. While beating, slowly pour the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, then quickly beat in the flour and mix until just combined.

DIVIDE the batter between the four molds and bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) for 6 to 7 minutes. The centers of the cakes will still be quite soft. Invert cakes on serving plates and let sit for about 15 seconds, then unmold. Serve immediately with fresh whipped cream, if desired.

Dear Old Bag: I am 76 years old. I happen to be a very nice man. I treat the ladies with respect, am pleasant, clean and nicely dressed. I read about the lady complaining about the men she has met through friendship ads. She should meet some of the women I meet. All they want is for themselves. I went out with one woman twice. The second time I brought her flowers.

I guess she didn’t like flowers, or maybe it was the way I kissed, because there was never a third time.

I was married 46 years and treated my wife like a queen. Women lie in their ads too. Thank you. Signed, S Dear S: I am sure you are a very nice man and there is a nice, truthful woman out there who will appreciate your qualities. There is something called chemistry between men and women that has to happen or there is no interest. The chemistry has to be felt by both to work. As we age, I think we get impatient. If the chemistry is not there, a person moves on and does not waste their time with a relationship that is not going anywhere. To me the ideal thing is to become friends with a person first…no kissing or sex involved. Spend time getting to know the person inside.

When you get to know a person and like them, a few extra pounds or the fact that they are not movie-star beautiful, does not matter. Years ago, my friend urged me to go out with this guy who was a good-looking, multimillionaire. She said, “It is just as easy to fall in love with a rich guy as a poor guy.” I went out with him and had never been so bored in my life.

Everything was about him and his “things”—his airplane, his cruises, his world trips, etc. Boring! He could not figure out why I did not want to go out again. Like I said last month, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince or princess!

Dear Old Bag: I have lived in a retirement community for several years and I love it here. I shared the following observation with my daughter and she said, “I thought as people aged, they became sweeter, kinder and more tolerant.” I told her that most people I meet here fall into that category.

However, there are some that make one ashamed to be old. There are some people who seem to thrive on complaining about the management, activity programs, library, etc.

I always try to avoid them, but once in a while I end up sitting with them at meals. It is enough to spoil your appetite. What happens to some people who grow old this way?

Thank you, Puzzled Dear Puzzled: I believe in any group of size, one will find these people you described so well. My observation is this: Unless there is some medical problem, people do not change as they grow older. They just become more of what they have been all their lives. The gossipy high school girl becomes a gossipy retirement community resident. The critical boss becomes a critical retirement community resident. You are right to avoid them as they can ruin your day.

My message is to the younger group such as our sons and daughters: You are going to become more of what you are, so if you have negative qualities, you better work on them, or you will be one of those retirement residents people try to avoid.

Yes, men get osteoporosis, but women are at greater risk.

Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue. This condition creates an increased risk of fractures.

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans. About 68 percent of them are women. One out of every two women and one in four men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

Our bodies remove old bone and replace it with new bone.

During our growth stage, new bone is added faster than old bone is removed. We hit peak bone mass around age 30.

After that, we lose more bone than we form.

Who is at risk of getting osteoporosis?

The chances are greater if you are a woman. Women have less bone tissue and lose bone faster than men because of changes from menopause. Small, thin-boned women are at greater risk. Caucasian and Asian women are at highest risk. Age is a major risk factor because bones become thinner and weaker as you age. Heredity can also increase fracture risk.

Low calcium intake appears to be associated with bone loss. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, dark-green leafy vegetables, almonds and foods fortified with calcium, such as orange juice.

Some people may need to take a calcium supplement.

Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium absorption and in bone health. It is made in the skin through exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D production decreases in the elderly, in people who are housebound and for people in general during the winter.

Depending on your situation, you

may need to take vitamin D supplements.

Bone responds to exercise by becoming stronger. Weight-bearing exercise is the best for your bones.

Get off the sofa.

Women who smoke have lower levels of estrogen compared to nonsmokers, and they often go through menopause earlier. Smokers also may absorb less calcium from their diets.

My advice? Quit.

Regular consumption of 2 to 3 ounces a day of alcohol may be damaging to the skeleton. Heavy drinkers are more prone to bone loss and fractures because of poor nutrition and increased risk of falling.

Quit, or at least, cut down.

People may not know they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a bump or fall causes a hip to fracture or a vertebra to collapse. See your doctor for a check-up.

Following a comprehensive medical assessment, your doctor may recommend that you have your bone mass measured. A bone mineral density (BMD) test is the best way to determine your bone health. BMD tests can identify osteoporosis, determine your risk for fractures and measure your response to osteoporosis treatment. The most widely recognized bone mineral density test is called a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, or DXA test.

A comprehensive osteoporosis treatment program includes a focus on proper nutrition, exercise and safety issues to prevent falls that may result in fractures. In addition, your physician may prescribe a medication to slow or stop bone loss, increase bone density and reduce fracture risk.

2. Pumping Iron. Bodybuilding was a fringe sport when this documentary came out in 1977, but afterwards the sport of bodybuilding exploded in popularity. If you’re looking for inspiration to help motivate you to pick up those dumbbells and pack on a few pounds of muscle, this is the movie to watch.

3. Harold and Maude. This classic, often overlooked gem is evidence that you don’t have to work your muscles to the bone to lead a rich, fulfilling life as a senior. Ruth Gordon’s performance as the octogenarian, Maude, shows that finding adventure at a ripe old age is simply a matter of having the nerve to look for it.

4. Space Cowboys. There’s nothing quite like a troupe of “old timers” showing the younger generation how it’s done to emphasize the virtues of experience over physical ability. Starring the fit as a fiddle Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner.

5. The Natural. Robert Redford’s touching and inspiring performance as an aging baseball player shows that sometimes physical ability can outlast the expectations of even the most optimistic.

6. The Rookie. With a tag line like “It’s never too late to believe in your dreams,” you know going into this movie that you’re in for something special. Dennis Quaid plays an aging baseball coach who decides to give his dream of being a pro baseball player a shot.

7. Never Say Never Again. At 53, Sean Connery returned to the role he made famous as James Bond, showing that age is no encumbrance to attractiveness, mobility and general on-screen heroics. He’s also an inspiration to those who feel that their best years may be behind them.

8. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. If there’s any sixty-something actor in Hollywood that can make growing old look good, it’s Harrison Ford. His superior physical shape in the last of the Indiana Jones movies may not inspire you to take on the world with a bullwhip in hand, but it’ll certainly show you that being over 60 doesn’t have to be an invitation to the old folks’ home.

9. Red. Helen Mirren delivers a rocking, rolling performance as a gun-toting, sexy sixty-something that proves just because a woman is verging on her seventh decade doesn’t mean she can’t take care of herself and look fabulous in the process.

7 ways women can prevent a heart attack or stroke

I

n the U.S., nearly one in three women will die of heart disease or stroke. These occur when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the heart or brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. Cardiovascular disease kills one woman per minute in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association, representing 421,918 deaths per year.

More women’s lives get claimed by heart disease than cancer, chronic respiratory disease, Alzheimer’s and accidents combined. In fact, each year, 55,000 more women die of stroke than men. Because stroke is so common, it’s something all women should be concerned about. Prevention is key. Here’s what you can do to reduce your stroke risk.

1. Know your risk level. Recently updated American Heart Association guidelines for cardiovascular disease prevention in women put women into three risk groups: high risk, at risk and ideal cardiovascular health. It’s important to identify which of the three groups you fit into. For example, you’re at high risk if you’ve already have heart disease because you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke, or have diabetes. You’re at risk if you smoke, have high blood pressure (greater than 120/80), total cholesterol above 200, you’re overweight, don’t exercise and/or eat an unhealthy diet. You fall into the category of ideal cardiovascular health if your total cholesterol is less than 200, your blood pressure is less than 120/80, your body mass index is less than 25, you don’t smoke, you’re physically active and eat a healthy diet. (Only one out of more than 1,900 people fall into this category, according to a “Circulation” study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.)

Then, based on your risk level, talk to your doctor to determine the best preventive program for you and your heart. If you’re at high risk for

stroke because you have diabetes, for example, you’ll want to manage your blood sugar closely. Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for heart attack or stroke because high blood sugar can damage blood vessels over time. 2. Stop smoking. “Smoking is a major risk factor for stroke because it increases blood pressure and the tendency for blood to clot, both of which are independent risk factors for stroke,” Director of Prevention Cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Lori Mosca said. To stop smoking, don’t do it alone. To increase your chances of success, get counseling and use nicotine replacement or drug therapy, if you need it.

3. Exercise your options. Get at least 150 minutes of moderatelyintense exercise each week, such as brisk walking or 75 minutes of vigorously-intense physical activity such as jogging or tennis. Consistency is key for a healthy heart and to help avoid weight gain, which is common as we get older because metabolism slows with age. Obesity is a major risk factor for all cardiovascular disease.

Nearly two out of every three women older than 20 are now overweight or obese.

4. Eat it to beat it. What’s good for your heart is also good for the blood vessels that feed your brain. Center your diet around fruits, vegetables and whole grains like oatmeal and whole-grain bread. Eat fish twice a week, preferably fatty fish such as salmon. Limit salt to less than 1,500 milligrams per day. Cut out trans fats and keep dietary cholesterol and saturated fat low by eating fewer fried foods, meat, packaged desserts, butter, cheese and other high-fat dairy products such as sour cream and ice cream. Limit alcohol to one drink daily or less.

5. Know your numbers. Get a check-up to get the facts: What’s your blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL

February 2012 “bad” cholesterol, HDL “good” cholesterol, triglycerides level, glucose (HbA1c), body mass index, and waist circumference? How do these compare to the ideal? High blood pressure (140/90 or more) can up your stroke risk; 120/80 is ideal. Optimal total cholesterol is less than 200; LDL—less than 160 is ideal if you have ideal cardiovascular health or 70 if you’re at very high risk; HDL— greater than 50 for women; triglycerides—less than 150; glucose—less than 7 percent; your body mass index should be 18.5-24.9; ideally, your waist circumference is 35 inches or less. Try lifestyle tactics to improve your numbers, such as changing your diet and losing weight. If that doesn’t help, talk to your doctor about drug therapy. Also, talk to your doctor before going on menopausal therapy.

Certain common medications, such as HRT, raloxifene or Tamoxifen may increase the risk of stroke. If you’re considering going on any one of these, talk to your doctor about your risk and how you can minimize that risk.

6. Talk to your doctor about

aspirin therapy. The AHA guidelines recommend daily aspirin use for women with heart disease, diabetes, or stroke to protect themselves from future attacks, unless your doctor tells you there’s a medical reason not to. For women age 65 and older, low-dose “baby” aspirin may prevent heart disease and certain types of stroke. Routine use to prevent a heart attack isn’t recommended for healthy women under 65 though.

7. Don’t ignore symptoms. A common one in women is atrial fibrillation—an irregular rhythm that causes one of the heart’s chambers not to beat properly. A clot can develop because of abnormal blood flow, causing a stroke. If you notice that your heart develops the tendency to occasionally beat rapidly, then slow down and see your doctor. You might also experience other symptoms like lightheadedness or difficulty breathing. A stroke from atrial fibrillation is preventable; blood-thinning drugs, such as aspirin or warfarin (Coumadin) can help. ♥

My diagnosis: Hours after giving notice at Cisco, I was working at my home computer when I felt my heart skip a few beats and start racing. I headed to the ER. I was diagnosed with afib. The cardiologist prescribed a beta blocker and a blood thinner and told me I’d be fine. But I started having frequent episodes. I couldn’t get stable. Living with afib was frightening because I never knew when it was going to strike. My family wouldn’t let me go anywhere by myself.

We had to take our motor home to all of my speaking engagements across the country.

Of course, we all know the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the “Buddy System.” For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this, it means you NEVER hike alone.

You always bring a friend or companion, even an in-law. That way, if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time hiking with my brother-in-law in northern Utah.

February 2012 asked if she made other animals not on display. Instead of saying no, she went to the drawing board and created whatever people were looking for. She uses photographs of real animals to help her design a pattern, then selects colorful combinations of fleece to give them personality.

When Kent found she couldn’t keep up with the demand, she sold her pattern to Simplicity.

“That way people could make their own,” Kent said. “That backfired. I am busier than ever. I had to hire a contract seamstress to help out. My daughter and grandkids even help out cutting and stuffing.”

Despite the onset of arthritis and lingering back injuries from a car accident, Kent puts in 30 hours weekly.

This busy schedule seems like a breeze compared to raising 122 foster children over the past 18 years with her husband, Gary.

The first Simplicity pattern came out two years ago and featured the hippo, elephant, rhino and giraffe.

Her second pattern includes the horse, Pegasus, unicorn, dog and baby panda. Other animals in her collection include the cow, pig, frog, turtle, penguin, dolphin and moose, to name a few. The animals are filled with hypoallergenic stuffing, are washable and have child safe eyes.

Robert Stuart and his group discovered the South Pass through the Rocky Mountains, the key to a continental passage by land. To find men for the first expedition of what would become the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, William Ashley and Andrew Henry ran the following advertisement in the “St. Louis Gazette” and “Public Advertiser” in the winter of 1822: “Enterprising Young Men...to ascend the Missouri to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years.” Answering the call were men who gained much fame: Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, Thomas Fitzpatrick and Hugh Glass.

Willpower was exhibited during challenging times. Jedediah Smith wrote of situations that required resilience and strength of character. He survived three massacres and a bear mauling, and was credited for helping to open the west for cattlemen and white settlers. Born in Virginia, Jim Bridger walked the Rocky Mountains from southern Colorado to the Canadian border. Mountain Man Bill Williams helped lead a transcontinental survey in 1848 in the Sangre de Cristos. When his team entered the mountains, the heavy snow caused Williams to retreat with a warning to John Fremont to use a southern route. Unfortunately, Fremont’s team continued and 10 members died of starvation.

Mountain Men were actually few in number. At any one time, no more than a thousand or so roamed

Most arrived at their destination in the mountains through St. Louis and then up the Missouri River and its tributaries, the Platte and Yellowstone Rivers.

Others were based out of Mexico’s northern posts, Santa Fe and Taos. Three out of four were French, French Canadian or Creole.

Many traced their origins to Montreal’s French fur trading companies and maintained their traditions, language, customs and culture.

Mountain Men often traveled in brigades containing 30-100 men.

In exchange for a salary and equipment, experienced trappers would give the fur trading company all of their furs and skins. The free trapper, however, equipped himself, traveled and trapped with whom he pleased, and sold his furs and skins to whoever offered the best prices. He was often at the mercy of fur companies and their offered prices. After a few nights of gambling and drinking, he might leave the annual rendezvous penniless and with just a few basic supplies to carry him through the next winter.

Because of the uncertainties, having more permanent locations for trading furs and for occasional social interaction and “possible” protection, the addition of forts was welcomed by many.

However, Ft. Uncompahgre’s purpose was primarily for securing trade goods and furs, and maintaining a few livestock. In 1843, all the Mexican workers and their wives at the fort, save one, were massacred or en-

Want a dream volunteer job?

Grand Junction Parks and Recreation is looking for a few good men and women to donate several hours a week to be out on the Riverfront Trail and be a Trail Host. This adventurous group of people has been volunteering for the City collectively for almost 100 years!

The mission of the Trail Host program is to provide a friendly presence to trail users. Often times, people need help with directions, their equipment, their pets, or the rules of the trail. Trail Hosts provide that needed help and also report any concerns to the Parks and Recreation Department.

The Trail Hosts meet once a month from March through September. The meetings are held at noon on the first Wednesday of the month in various park locations and are always informational. Many agencies provide support to the Trail Hosts including the Police Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, Animal Control, the State Parks Department and the Department of Wildlife.

Rod Harry became a Trail Host in the spring of 1998.

“It keeps me healthy and keeps my cardiologist smiling,” Harry said. “It’s only two hours a week and it’s free, and I get a free lunch in August.”

The Trail Hosts have been involved in leading rides for the Rob River Rally and they have a booth at the Poker Walk. It’s not just for bike riders. Walkers/runners are welcome too!

If you are interested in joining a dynamic fun loving group of people who share an appreciation for the great outdoors and want to learn about wildlife, safety and the Riverfront Trail, this is the place to be!

ouples who marry as young adults usually don’t bring a lot of financial baggage to the table.

But what if you’re getting married in your 50s, 60s or later—after divorce, children and years of building assets have complicated your economic situation? Do you and your spouseto-be have a game plan for how to comingle your finances?

There are many reasons to seek legal and financial advice before tying the knot. But before you bring in the professionals, there are a few steps you can take to better know where you stand: First, catalog each person’s preexisting assets and debts. Include assets like income from paychecks, Social Security, investment accounts, bank account balances, retirement benefits and equity in homes, cars and other major purchases. Debts might include ongoing expenses such as child support, insurance premiums, rent or mortgage payments, credit card balances, outstanding car loans and medical bills.

Use this information to launch discussions about: • What are your plans for sharing expenses and living arrangements?

• Whose medical insurance will you opt for—your own employer’s plan vs. spousal coverage?

• How long until each of you qualifies for Medicare, and how will you pay for coverage until then?

• How do you want your estates to be distributed? For example, how much of your pre-marriage assets should go to children from previous marriages?

You’ll probably want to amend your wills, financial and medical powers of attorney, life insurance policies, retirement accounts, investment funds and any other accounts where beneficiaries or people who control your health or finances are named.

You also might want to draft a prenuptial agreement (prenup), a written contract that basically outlines

who gets what if you divorce or one of you dies. Having a prenup might prevent your spouse from challenging terms of your will or preexisting trusts after you die (it happens).

Other financial considerations: • By federal law, you can bequeath an IRA to anyone you like, but spouses are entitled to inherit other non-IRA retirement benefits such as 401(k) and pension plans unless they sign away their rights.

• Amounts accumulated in 401(k) plans during a marriage typically are considered marital property, so if you were previously divorced, the court should have divided your accounts through a qualified domestic relations order as part of the divorce settlement.

• Division of pension benefits can be even more complicated, so make sure your attorney reviews prior divorce settlements very carefully when drafting your prenup.

• If you were widowed, or married at least 10 years before divorcing, you can draw Social Security benefits based on your dead or former spouse’s earnings if that’s more favorable than your own accumulated benefit. However, if you remarry before age 60 (50, if disabled), that option goes away.

• Prenups don’t supersede Medicaid rules. The government considers your combined income when determining eligibility to receive Medicaid benefits, including long-term nursing home care.

• Alimony payments from ex-spouses will almost certainly end when you remarry, so factor that into your new budget.

• Widowed spouses of public employees often lose some or all of their survivor benefits upon remarriage, so research survivor annuity or health insurance policies carefully.

Congratulations on finding love later in life. Don’t be put off by all the important financial decisions you’ll need to make together, but do get sound legal and financial advice. ■

n 1992, Mesa County RSVP, which recruits seniors for volunteer positions, saw a need to help seniors on a limitedincome and people with disabilities remain living safely and independently in their own homes. The solution was the Handyman Project.

Handyman Project volunteers are skilled at doing minor home improvements. They work for eligible people who just need a little help around the house. Handymen use their own tools, drive their own vehicles and give their time to enhance the quality of life for our clients.

Are you 55+ and handy?

Please consider joining our handy men and women who use their skill, time and compassion to help people who are physically and financially unable to help themselves. If you’re over age 55, all you have to do is join RSVP for free.

We’ll train you on our Handyman procedures and you get to choose the jobs. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, enjoy social events and volunteer insurance.

ourteen years ago, I was in a serious auto accident. Unable to move or feel anything, I knew that God was in control. I felt that if I lived, God must have something else for me to do. After a month in St. Mary’s and a year and a half in physical therapy rehab, I was getting back to normal.

What is normal for an active senior?

Since I’m past the three-quarter-century mark, I do qualify as a “senior” citizen. But then, I feel that age is an attitude and I generally don’t feel the “senior” status. Devotions and a morning prayer start my day. Then comes the newspaper—reading the front page, checking the stock market and savoring the sports pages.

Next, it’s on to the puzzles—all of them. Now I’m ready for the active part of my day.

Church activities make up a big part of my life. Because I am widowed and my sons and their families live in other states, my local family is my church family. A circle of friends, both inside and outside the church, is my support group. My church activities include working in the library, singing in the choir, two weekly Bible studies and various monthly small group activities, such as a book group, a stitching group, a small dinner group, and senior outings and lunches.

Outside of my church life, you’ll find me a couple of times a week at Silver Sneakers, an exercise program To Glenda Moore, age is an attitude that doesn’t keep her from exercising and staying active in her church and community.

I’m also active in a PEO chapter, a philanthropic education organization for women, and I meet monthly with a rug braiding group and the Weavers Guild. Keeping up with the activities of my two sons, their wives and five grandchildren involves the phone, Skype, emails, texting and Facebook.

It’s my faith in God and Jesus Christ that keeps me going every day, because 14 years ago, I didn’t know if I would keep going. In my retirement years (at least, retired as far as a paycheck is concerned), I do the things I love and have learned that I can say “no” to anything that doesn’t fit. And I love my “me” time at home. For me, it’s a time when I can just sit and do nothing if I choose, and be comfortable doing nothing.

Grand Junction is a great place to live, with many opportunities available. Start by getting out and volunteering—get in the midst of something. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is a good place to start because they work with 90+ organizations in the area to help you find a good fit to volunteer, no matter what your skills are.

Many people unfamiliar with details surrounding a traditional, full-service funeral may not be aware that certain cemeteries require some type of outer burial container that prevents the grave from sinking in the future. Burial vaults and grave liners are designed to protect the casket from heavy equipment used by the cemetery, as well as to keep the ground from sinking in as the casket decomposes. While there is no state law that requires the usage of a burial vault or grave liner, it can be a requirement of the individual cemetery.

Two of our local cemeteries – Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Orchard Mesa Cemetery – currently have this requirement, and more and more cemeteries are following this trend all the time.

A burial vault is made of high-strength concrete and lined with metal or durable plastic. A vault fully encloses a casket and inhibits the elements entering the vault. The vault protects the casket from several factors, such as: the weight of the ground on top of it to prevent future sinking, heavy machinery the cemetery uses for maintenance, and in most cases, ground water.

Vaults may be customized with inscriptions or even family images. As strong as a burial vault may be, it is not designed to prevent the eventual decomposition of the casket and its contents.

Grave liners are unlined and unsealed, and are generally less expensive than burial vaults. A grave liner is made of reinforced concrete, which is porous by nature and may allow ground water to seep in. A liner is designed mainly to stabilize the ground around the grave and prevent sinking as the casket decomposes.

nce again, the Colorado State University Extension is offering seedling trees and shrubs in cooperation with the Colorado State University Forest Service at a nominal charge for conservation purposes. These seedlings need to be ordered now for pick-up at the end of April. Trees will be delivered from the CSU Forestry nursery in Fort Collins to Grand Junction, Delta and Montrose.

To qualify for the program, you must own two or more acres of land and use the seedlings for conservation purposes such as windbreaks, wildlife areas, reforestation, erosion control and living snow fences.

Five thousand Coloradans purchase seedlings through this program each year including several hundred Mesa,

Delta, Montrose and Ouray County residents. Even homeowner associations and area communities have purchased these seedlings for the development of windbreaks and small forests in their open space.

The trees and shrubs offered through this program come in different sizes and lots of 25-30 each.

Some sizes and species are in limited supply. Over 40 different species are available, from Colorado blue spruce to lilac to native plum.

Our team will provide you the guidance you need to keep your seedlings in a healthy condition until planted.

this program are insect, mite and disease-free, but the trees and shrubs you already have in your yard and gardens may not be as lucky. While insects seldom attack trees at this time of year, some of your trees and shrubs may already be infested with these pests. As soon as it starts to warm up, even more insects and mites will begin feeding on plants making treatments necessary. Making treatments at this time of year may not be a wise idea.

A client named Claudia reached me the other day about winter treatments to control tent caterpillars.

These are the caterpillars that show up in apple, aspen, cottonwood and many other ornamental trees when the leaves start to expand in the spring. Claudia’s question had to do with applying an insecticide around the base of the tree this winter to control this insect. The eggs of this insect were laid last summer on the twigs in the top of the host tree, so treating the ground most likely won’t work. One product that would work at this time of year is dormant

oil, as this will suffocate the eggs.

Dormant oils, however, darken the buds causing them to accumulate heat. If applied before buds start to open in the spring, the accumulated heat may cause the buds to open too early resulting in freeze damage and bud death. Claudia’s best bet is to apply one of the aizawai or kurstaki strains of Bt insecticides as soon as she notices the caterpillars feeding in her trees. If she can’t reach the top of her trees with her sprayer, a commercial pesticide applicator would need to make this application. Bt is a bacteria that kills very specific types of insects. Aizawai and kurstaki Bt kill lepidoptera caterpillars while other Bt strains are effective on other insect types.

ver the years, the BEACON Senior Newspaper has recognized many 50 plus volunteers at our Grand Junction BeaconFest in April. Every year, our staff reads each of the dozens of nominations we receive. After much discussion, only one person (or in last year’s case, one couple) is chosen and presented with an award for being Volunteer of the Year.

It’s not easy for us to choose only one volunteer out of the many wonderful nominations we receive each year. It also doesn’t get any easier the following year.

Which is why we are doing something different.

Instead of publishing all of the nominees after BeaconFest, in the May issue of the BEACON, nominees will be featured in the March issue of the BEACON. The winner will then be chosen by BEACON readers.

But as usual, all nominated volunteers at BeaconFest will be called to the stage and presented with awards.

The winner will also be announced.

Glenwood Vaudeville Review The spring show of the Glenwood Vaudeville Review will open February 3 and run through April 21.

Would you want your grandchild to run for president?

emember when mothers use to say, “My son might grow up to be president of the United States!”

You don’t hear that now. Maybe predicting that son or daughter may be a doctor, a lawyer, a top executive or other achievements, but certainly not president.

Why this turnaround?

The simple answer is who wants his or her child to be exposed to being the brunt of media pressure and the focus of all kinds of jokes and accusations.

Plus endless days of stress and dozens of other not especially good things for any person who might be fortunate in reaching such heights of what used to be success, but might currently be rated a bit lower.

I have a grandson, who makes such a tremendous impression on people many have said, “He should run for president one day.” To which my answer is, “I pray not!”

He is age 28, 6 feet 5 inches in height, has a master’s degree from Columbia University, speaks and writes Arabic fluently, is an expert on the Middle East and is currently in Afghanistan as a U.S. employee for one year working with the locals.

Sure, he would be an excellent candidate for any political office, especially president.

He is very handsome, down to earth and has common sense.

So, you ask, “Wouldn’t you be very proud for him to lead our nation?”

My answer, “Yes, and no.” No, because of what he would have to go through to be elected.

He would lose his personal life, he would have to beg for money, perhaps compromise some of his beliefs and become a slave to his goal.

You may ask why I am so concerned? Because I’ve seen what those candidates for the Republican slot in the presidential race are going through. Would you enjoy traveling all over the nation, appearing on television, hosting news conferences, bombarded for autographs, hounded by favor seekers? You would be criticized for each misstep, each public statement, accused of reversing your position on events years ago? They receive constant harassment from the media and cooked up scandals that are often untrue. I could go on and on. The public has illustrated how fickle and hypocritical we can be in choosing our leaders.

Of course, I agree my grandson is super. Don’t change him, please. And that same request is made for any candidate for president. Let him or her show their education, their beliefs,

“He should run for president one day.”

To which my answer is, “I pray not!”

their integrity, their goals for themselves and the country. Don’t work them so hard in their campaigning that their integrity collapses.

I don’t know the answer. But I do know that my beautiful grandson has no intentions or desire to run for president. And I agree.

Isn’t it sad that I am expressing the feelings of most other parents? ■

Presidential Fun Facts You don’t have to be republican or democrat or have to keep up with politics to appreciate these “fun facts” about our country’s leaders.

• Eight presidents never attended college: Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Fillmore, Lincoln, Andrew Johnson and Cleveland.

• The term “First Lady” was first used in 1849 when President Zachary Taylor called Dolley Madison “First Lady” at her state funeral. Most First Ladies, including Jackie Kennedy, are said to have hated the label.

• James Buchanan was the only president never to marry. Five presidents remarried after the death of their first wives, two of whom (Tyler and Wilson) remarried while in the White House. Reagan was the only divorced president.

Six presidents had no children. On the other hand, Tyler had 15.

• Presidents Adams, Jefferson and Monroe all died on July 4.

Coolidge was born on that day.

• The ancestry of all 44 presidents is limited to the following heritages, or some combination thereof: Dutch, English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Swiss, German and African.

Latest generation technology means more options for robotic surgery

obotic technology has been used by surgeons at St. Mary’s since 2007.

Using this amazing tool, the surgeon sits at a video console directing the actions of four robotic arms.
