ooking backward can help us move forward.

As I took stock of our 2021 issues with 2022 stretching out before me, I felt a fresh appreciation for all the seniors that have graced the pages of Life After 50 in the past year. I marvel at what a diverse group they are. Men. Women.

Varied races. Assorted belief systems. Differing socioeconomic levels. It’s a snapshot of how diverse our readership is as well, and it’s wonderful!

Something many of these seniors in Life After 50 have in common is their hobbies. I think of Becky Van Vleet’s writing books, Rocky Shockley and Tim Jones’ love of history and hiking, Paul LaChance’s fondness for grueling Spartan Races, Jane Scanlon and others who make forest bathing a peaceful practice, “Cartoon Bill” Crowley’s on-the-spot uncanny caricatures, Sandra Wise’s ability to transform thrift store finds into outfits that wow, Michael Pach and Michael Lowery’s stunning local photography, October’s craft beer brewers and last month’s Clauses, bringing joy to kiddos. This issue is no different, as we bring you senior actors who have made their mark on the local theatre scene.

We feature regular columns on gardening, pets, recipes, technology and travel. Our Clubs section offers gatherings for knitters, coin and stamp collectors, painters, dancers, readers, trivia enthusiasts, bridge players, bulldog owners, chess and Scrabble players, runners and outdoor adventurers, fly fishing fans, genealogy buffs and more. We are a bunch of doers!

Whether you have years of practice or just a keen interest, most of these clubs will accept you where you are, either giving you the knowhow or encouraging you to further develop your existing skill set.

WHY HOBBIES, ESPECIALLY AT THIS STAGE OF LIFE? � Hobbies can generate income. After the demands of providing for a family have eased and

retirement is closer than ever (or here), having a side hustle to supplement your fixed income might be beneficial for unexpected expenses like medical bills or car repairs. Even if your basic needs are met, starting a fund for vacations and other extras could be motivating and fun. As they say, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” � Hobbies can help us serve others with joy. It’s a great big world with a whole lot of needs out there. I recently read of a woman who turned a love of baking into a multistate network to make homemade bread for the food-insecure. And there’s Jim King and Otis Moreland from our December 2020 issue, expert woodworkers who craft toys for children going through sickness or other hardships at Christmas time. We can do more than just fret about the status quo. We can pitch in to address a need or put a smile on someone’s face. � Hobbies enrich our lives. When the stressors of considerable financial obligations and working full time lessen, it allows us to do what really speaks to our hearts. Maybe there’s a pastime you cast aside years ago and always longed to return to. Perhaps you’re excited about learning a new skill. Hobbies don’t just mindlessly take up time, they fill it in meaningful ways. You might even create family heirlooms. My mom and grandpa have done this, she with artwork including rosemaling (Scandinavian decorative painting) and he with clocks made for each grandchild—pieces we all cherish.

No doubt the dozen 2022 issues of Life After 50 will introduce you to plenty more hobbies and hobbyists. I hope that by reading their stories, you’ll start to think, “Hmmm. Maybe I could try that!” I’ll bet you can. And you should!

To Be, or Not to Be…

a senior actor Mature actors bring authenticity to the stage

hen it comes to staying active, drama checks all the boxes.

Theatre involves the entire body physically, mentally, socially, culturally and emotionally.

As a journalist turned actor who is over 50, I pondered the joys and challenges that come with taking the stage. I’ve seen my talent increase with age, but my stamina decrease. I wondered if ageism is a widespread problem in the industry, having encountered it myself. (When I turned 40, my agent sent me to an audition for a senior living facility resident— the agency and I have since parted ways.)

Retirees with freed-up schedules have more time to devote to rehearsals and performances, even if they’ve never stepped foot on a stage before.

Yet why are there few performers over 50 when seniors take up the majority of seats in most theater audiences?

Whether for funds or just for fun, the lure of the spotlights is ageless.

Several local actors continued the conversation.

MATURITY BRINGS CONFIDENCE Warren Epstein scored his first theatrical role at age 11. At 61, he can still quote his one line from his first play.

“You become a more interesting person, and your experiences allow you to bring more to the character,” said Epstein.

Now executive director of marketing and communication at Pikes Peak Community College, Epstein grew interested in community theater while working at The Gazette as a reporter and theatre critic. He has since performed in several plays and wrote and starred in his own one-man show, “Borscht Belted,” which spotlights Jewish comedians performing in the Catskills in the 1960s.

Amy Brooks, 60, two-time winner of The Gazette’s Best Actress award, said age brings a confidence that “frees you to be more daring,” without worry of what anyone will think.

This perspective, along with her “inborn” need to perform, has led Brooks to act in 40 shows at every theater in town.

Jim Jackson, who owns the Millibo Art Theater at 1626 S. Tejon St, added

that with maturity, “you have the experience, you have the knowledge, you have the technique and the craft.”

Jackson, 66, knows about honing skills, as he is one of those rare performers who never had a day job.

Since studying as a mime in college, Jackson has earned his living in the performing arts. He joined the circus as a clown after graduation (he likens it to boot camp) and still performs at the Millibo.

While maturity brings many benefits, there is also a trade-off. He joked that he must remove something from his repertoire every year. He used to fall off a six-foot unicycle as part of his act, but he found that the impact was becoming too much for his knees.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES A common challenge older actors face is memorization.

Epstein recalled an “existential crisis” on the opening night of “Borscht Belted.”

“I had 90 minutes of dialogue stuffed in my brain,” he said, and was terrified that he might forget a line.

The director reassured him that the lighting and sound technician in the booth would have a script in case of an emergency. And sure enough, Epstein needed the help.

Veteran actress Barbara Summerville, 71, advises actors “to forgive yourself if you forget something because you can live in that I-forgotmy-line space and screw up the rest of the play.”

She recalled a dress rehearsal at Theatreworks for “Arsenic and Old Lace,” when she was supposed to use tongs to pick up sugar cubes while serving tea onstage. The sugar was stuffed in so tightly she couldn’t extract a cube, and this little setback threw her.

“It was like I missed a dance step,” she said, and it took her half the play to regain her equilibrium.

When memorizing a part, “you have to start earlier and work harder,” said Mike Miller, 69, a theater and screen veteran known for his roles in

“Air Force One,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Brooklyn South.”

For Catherine Cotton McGuire, it’s defying challenges that keeps theatre interesting. The 76-year-old takes great pride in the joy of memorizing lines “and to know I can.”

Fortunately, Jackson said theatre is flexible, even when performers have lost some flexibility. Increasing the font size in scripts and transposing music to a lower key are accommodations directors might make for senior performers.

As a director and producer, he builds additional rehearsal time into a show’s schedule if he casts mature actors. The process can take more time but it pays off in the confidence and trust engendered by seasoned actors.

AGEISM IN THEATRE Miller said there are fewer parts for mature actors, especially for women.

“There will always be more opportunities for the ingenue or leading man,” said Jackson. And in physical performance such as dance or clowning, “there will always be a younger person who can do it better.”

Brooks believes creative casting is the only hope for mature women.

Recently, she played Titus Andronicus and Julius Caesar in gender-swapped

Shakespearean productions.

“In our society, women become somewhat invisible after a certain age.

So theater reflects that,” said Brooks.

“You either have to play the comical old lady or the maid.”

For Lynne Hastings, 52, being a woman of a certain age can be limiting, but “being a woman of color makes it even harder.”

Hastings, another two-time Best Actress winner, yearns for meaty, three-dimensional roles that don’t involve Steel Magnolias. However, she sees signs of hope of busting stereotypes in modern theater.

“The tide is turning in American theater, and Colorado Springs needs to shift with it,” she said.

At 75, stage and film actor and producer Kathy Paradise feels she has “aged out” of the industry.

“If the casting calls for women 40 to 70, they’ll always pick the 40-yearold,” said Paradise.

She now produces short, original plays in a yearly festival format.

“A good thing about the industry is you can pretty easily switch hats,” Jackson said.

Although he still performs, Jackson has redirected much of his energy toward running his theater and affording others a chance to take the stage. ■

ate one evening, my 87-year-old mother fell in the basement of her home and spent eight hours on the floor, unable to move.

My sister found Mom the next morning, injured but alive. My wife and I drove her to Memorial Hospital, where she jokingly compared the bruised cheeks she received in the fall to the facial makeup sported by Gene Simmons of KISS. Although I was thankful that she maintained her sense of humor, I worried that another accident

awaited her. In addition to having fallen before, Mom also suffers from several health issues that restrict her mobility. Plus, her arms aren’t strong enough to hoist herself back to her feet. What if her next accident proved fatal?

It’s no secret that our mobility becomes difficult to manage as we age. Like Mom, many seniors have fallen in public restrooms, restaurants and in their own home because there was nothing solid to hold on to.

Falls are one of the leading causes of death in adults over age 65. In fact, one in three fall each year, and 80 percent of accidents occur in the bathroom. Even falls that don’t lead to injury can provoke a fear of falling that causes you or a loved one to avoid the activities that keep you healthy, strong, and ultimately less likely to fall.

Therefore, safety is an important part of your independence, and making these simple changes may save your life.

Assess your home to fix or remove anything that could cause trips or slips, such as clutter, poor lighting, and wobbly furniture or handrails.

2. Know your risks. A physical therapist can help you assess your risk factors and develop a plan to address them so you can remain independent. Tell your doctor or physical therapist if you have any dizziness, loss of balance or trouble seeing.

3. Check your medications. Many drugs can cause dizziness, loss of balance, blurry vision and more. If you have any of these symptoms, review your medications with your pharmacist or doctor.

4. Work with a physical therapist.

Combined with exercise, physical therapy that’s focused on balance, stability and the ability to

perform common tasks is recommended and can prevent falls, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Physical therapists are able to help you avoid a fall in the first place, as they are movement experts who can work with you to assess your fall risk factors and develop a plan to address them. Heat pot or cast-iron casserole dish over medium heat. Once hot, add oil, garlic, onion and mushrooms. Add pinch of sea salt and pepper as it cooks.

Cook until onions turn brown and mushrooms shrink in size, about 3-5 minutes. Empty contents and set aside.

Place pot back over heat. Add shredded kale and water to create steam. Toss kale in pot until it turns vibrant green; set aside to cool.

In large bowl, mix ricotta cheese with mushroom mixture, kale, pesto and spice blend.

In casserole dish, spread about 1/2 cup marinara on bottom.

One by one, stuff each pasta shell with approximately 2 tablespoons of the ricotta mixture and add to casserole dish. Repeat with remaining shells.

Cover shells with remaining marinara and mozzarella cheese.

Cover casserole dish with foil and bake 20 minutes. During final 5 minutes, remove foil so mozzarella can brown.

Garnish with fresh herbs and salt and pepper to taste. ■

4 natural antihistamine foods

n a recent trip to Florida, I was taken aback by how many people were blowing their noses due to allergies. Many people in all parts of the U.S. suffer from allergies yearround, especially in hot, humid conditions where mold spores, weeds, flowers and grasses are abundant.

There are ways to help your body produce its own natural antihistamine and mitigate all the sneezing, itching and runny nose problems. Histamine is an “exciting” chemical, meaning it excites and wakes up the brain. This is why antihistamines often cause sedation. Quercetin-rich fruits like apples and most vegetables will help attenuate allergic reactivity in almost everyone! Supplements are widely available at health food stores, too, if the capers aren’t enough.

2. Pineapples. Fresh pineapple confers bromelain, a strong anti-inflammatory enzyme that can help with a runny nose and itchy,

swollen eyes. Bromelain helps with mucus production and allergies by blocking chemicals that cause misery. It’s also a popular natural post-surgical supplement because it speeds up the healing of tissue.

However, some people are allergic to pineapple. If you’re one of those people, then you may also have cross-reactivity to bananas, so be careful.

3. Ginger. I like Ginger Chews and crystallized ginger, as well as the type found in Japanese cuisine like sushi. My favorite form is ginger tea, which is easy to make. Ginger is a strong natural antihistamine that offers immediate relief for a scratchy, raw throat—the kind that occurs when you have a lot of phlegm dripping down. Up three, down two

How I learned to finally be happy with my weight

I

t seems the entire world is consumed with weight issues.

Most people want to lose weight.

A smaller percentage would like to gain. I will admit to feeling a degree of annoyance for people who are underweight and complain about it.

I’m certain that their problem is real to them, but I can’t relate. I would love to know what it feels like to not have to leave the top button of my slacks open and concealed with an over-blouse, or to slip into the ladies’ room to loosen my bra.

My mother had a lovely figure, so she must have known something.

All I recall is she drank a lot of water, took a daily multivitamin, and ate a lot of fish. Weight was never discussed, and I didn’t hear the word “calorie” until I was in my 20s and pregnant with my first child.

Until then, I ate any and everything I wanted without guilt, and so did my friends. We all had nice figures despite the fact that we stuffed burgers, fries, milkshakes and chocolate bars down our gullets several times a week. It never crossed our minds that there might be a connection between eating and weight gain because it never occurred to us that our bodies would change.

No one I knew exercised. It simply was not an issue until Jack LaLanne entered the picture. The father of fitness showed up on our tiny TV screens in the early 1950s, working up a sweat as he lifted enormous barbells and did an endless number of push-ups and situps. He pushed himself to the limit even though doctors back then

were advising that such strenuous exercise could lead to a heart attack. He proved the doctors wrong when he died of natural causes at 96 years old.

I rarely missed one of his shows.

The man had me mesmerized, but I knew better than to do something that might cause me to break a sweat or mess my hair. So I simply watched from the comfort of my couch, nibbling Twinkies and wondering how much larger his biceps could stretch without exploding.

My concerns about weight started with my first pregnancy when, for the first time in my life, everything I ate turned to fat. Apparently, my metabolism had changed

because, with the exception of a weekly scoop of ice cream, I wasn’t doing anything different than I had my entire life.

Back then, when women were pregnant they were told they were now “eating for two,” which was all the excuse we needed to occasionally sidestep caution. In my seventh month, my obstetrician betrayed me when he changed his attitude and said, “If you don’t lose some weight, I will not be responsible for the results.”

Talk about speaking from both sides of his mouth!

From that point on, I’ve spent most waking hours obsessing over what I should and shouldn’t eat,

At one of my early weight loss meetings, the speaker attempted to convince our group of desperately deprived overeaters that when we make a bologna sandwich, we could replace the bologna with lettuce leaves and, she assured us, we would not know the difference. She failed to consider the fact that even though we were hungry, we were not idiots.

My weight is pretty stable now.

That doesn’t mean I couldn’t afford to lose a little more, but I’ve finally come to terms with who I am. I can honestly say that I like myself. After a lifetime of weight loss successes followed by disappointing failures, this yo-yo has finally come to rest.

DOUBLING

Repairing the trauma of vet visits Dear Ms. Kitty: I recently had to take my longhaired cat Duncan to the vet. He came back with a lion cut and a cone. His brother Gibbs didn’t seem to recognize him and now they are fighting! How can I get them back together? —Naked in Nederland

ASSESS THE CONE

Dear Naked: Poor Duncan went away to the vet as a fluffy cat who smelled like your family and came back almost a completely different cat. The pros call this non-recognition aggression. If the cone is hard plastic, he may not be able to move around normally either. No wonder Gibbs didn’t recognize him!

It makes sense that Gibbs would react strongly. After all, would you welcome a stranger into your home without warning?

Don’t wait for them to “work it out.” If they are fighting, get one of them into a room they like being in—like their safe room—and close that door! Each time they fight makes it worse for the next time.

If the two cats actually fought, you may need to reintroduce them. This should give Gibbs time to realize Duncan is someone he knows.

You can also mix scents by switching the cats. Without letting them see each other, let Duncan out into the rest of the house and put Gibbs in Duncan’s room. They will rub on corners and use each other’s litter boxes to scent the room themselves.

They may interact under the door. Try to wait till the cone comes off before letting them see each other.

When you first open the door, add a baby gate to the opening to give them time to peek at each other before meeting face to face.

Ask another person to give them treats on either side and praise them both while first sighting each other. Avoid treating if the cats growl or hiss.

Do this in short spurts, adding more time with each visit. You will know when it’s safe to let Duncan out by watching them go back to their old affectionate behaviors.

Before long, you’ll have your loving boys back together again. ■

REPAIR THE SCENTS Duncan should want to groom himself when he feels safe. The more he does, the more familiar he will smell. You can speed it up with a familiar blanket or your own aromatic clothing. Fold it small and gently pet Duncan all over, making sure he enjoys that.

Now take the same fabric and pet Gibbs. Repeat this several times to mix their scents, recreating the common colony scent they had before the grooming.

The benefits of heirloom v. hybrid

seeds

anuary means it’s the beginning of a new growing season! For gardeners, this is the time of year when visions of Eden in our yard dance in our heads and our gardens are perfectly ripe with potential.

The seed catalogs have also arrived! It’s fun to see the new varieties along with pictures of crops we’ve forgotten about. Now is the time to designate space in the garden to try growing something new.

Maybe this is the year to establish some asparagus or see if homegrown parsnips are really as creamy as they say.

Once you choose your crop, your next decision is the type of seeds to get: hybrid or heirloom?

DISEASE-RESISTANT HYBRIDS Hybrid seeds gained popularity in the late 1800s. This technique intentionally crosses pollen be-

tween the same species of crops to produce offspring with more desirable traits. We’ve gained size, color, shapes and uniformity of maturation by breeding traits into crops—all of which aid commercial growers. Hybridized seeds have also been bred to fortify crops against common diseases and viruses. Having powdery mildew (PM) makes a PM-resistant cucumber a good choice, as it can withstand the disease.

The downside to hybridized seeds is that saving them is dicey. Each seed may exhibit traits from either parent or multiple grandparents, which greatly decreases the chances that a saved seed will be identical to

More importantly, since hybrid seeds have taken over the agriculture industry, declines in food nutrients have followed suit. Breeding in a desired trait has the unfortunate consequence of breeding out other traits—most commonly nutritional content.

In August 2019, Scientific American published an article documenting a 10- to 100- percent decline in the nutritional value of food. Their final statement was that today a person needs to eat two times the amount of meat, three times the fruit, and four to five times the vegetables to obtain the same vitamins and minerals as food grown in the 1940s.

Thank goodness home gardeners have another option!

NUTRIENT-RICH HEIRLOOMS Fortunately, heirloom seeds are now available from a variety of sources.

Each heirloom seed came from an open-pollinated parent, meaning the parent’s same genetics and displayed traits transferred to the child plant. Many heirloom seeds are saved for generations.

Home growers have long known that heirloom tomatoes taste amazing, but studies are showing that heirloom crops have more vitamins and lycopene than their hybridized counterparts.

Ohio State University and Agricultural Research Service in California have specifically found that orange heirloom tomatoes contain prolycopene, a disease-fighting antioxidant not found in hybrid tomatoes.

One fantastic source of heirloom seeds is Baker Creek Seeds (www.rareseeds.com). Not only does their catalog read like a novel, but they support numerous nonprofit and community gardens around the country. Seed Savers Exchange in Iowa (www.seedsav ers.org) is a clearinghouse for heirloom seeds passed down from previous generations who immi-

grated to this country. I also recommend most local seed swaps.

Most vegetable crops begin to naturalize to their surroundings after four to seven generations, so locally saved seeds have already begun to adopt to our low humidity, alkaline water and cool nights. That makes for a stronger plant that better transfers nutrients (and flavor) from the soil to your body.

Gardening is fun. Eating tasty produce grown yourself is wonderful. But eating fruits and veggies packed with antioxidants and minerals is the best reward you can give yourself as a grower. ■

Use it before you lose it How to challenge your body and mind

T

he Doors’ Jim Morrison cautioned, “No one here gets out of life alive.”

In late life, I’m devoted to seizing each precious moment as best as I can by exercising my mind, learning, maintaining my appearance and keeping active—thus living as fully as my aging body permits.

Life’s teaching me that aging is overrated. But with a positive attitude, self-love and genuine effort, it doesn’t need to be as bad as people think. Sure, convenience is important as our aging limitations manifest, but we mustn’t walk the path to its inevitability ready to give up.

Giving up is easy. The discomfort that comes from learning is less welcome as we age because, for many reasons, it becomes more difficult.

Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops learning is old. Whether 20 or 80, anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

The great Michelangelo wrote the inscription “still I am learning” at age 87 on a sketch he was working on at the time. If we’re mentally present in the moment, learning, challenging our brain cells and growing in wonder and awe, we can retain our joie de vivre.

THINK GOOD THOUGHTS The first place we lose the battle of aging is in our thoughts. If we think we’ve reached our limits, then we have. If we think we will never be well, then we won’t. To counter that, we must look inward to see what’s blocking us, filter our thinking, discard negative self-talk, and be aware that a lack of positive enthusiasm negatively affects our entire being.

I heard a friend of mine say, “I’m satisfied with what I know. Now I

can spend my days eating, burping, napping, watching TV and movies, playing cards and board games.”

In all respects, it’s their journey and not my business. But I’ll admit hanging out with fellow seniors who seem to have given up sucks the life out of me. Their grumbling about their various illnesses, where they ache, or (as if it’s a competition) how many prescriptions they take empowers the beast of aging by focusing their energy on the negative.

Experience has taught me that worrying and complaining changes nothing, except cheating me out of what little sands of time I have left in the hourglass. Complaining evaporates any joy we might find.

I’ve realized that my thoughts combined with feelings and self-talk have power. It’s Newton’s Law of Attraction. When I think negative thoughts, they gain power and, sure as heck, bad things follow.

When I think good thoughts, good then follows.

IT TAKES EFFORT A Pew Research Center Social & Demographic Trends’ survey on aging found we’re never too old to feel young. But it takes mindful effort.

Sitting around waiting for the end is simply self-defeating.

To live my best life now, I’ve chosen to stretch my brain before it seizes up completely (although friends and family agree the boat has already sailed). Once I knew I could still learn whatever piqued

And it seems the more I learn, the more I learn I have more to learn...and unlearn. It never ends. Education is not something we ever finish. It’s not a waste to invest in ourselves, to grow and learn about the earth, humanity and the vast, mysterious cosmos.

I’ve given family and friends permission to call me out if they ever see me wearing the “I’ve given up” uniform—a fanny pack, white sneakers, baggy sweatpants and untrimmed nose hairs. However, when I get up each day with the sun, stretch, make my daily intention and the bed, dress well, tidy my appearance and check my beard for

granola crumbs, my day and I take on a higher vibe.

Give up? Not me. Granted, I’m a long way from perfect and as humanly flawed as the next person.

I don’t always succeed, but I give it my best shot. I may be ancient to my grandkids, but I’m still alive, care how I look and age, and take advantage of this magnificent, albeit relatively short, earthly experience.

Yes, Jim, no one gets out alive.

The reality is, we all start dying the moment we’re born. So why not seize each precious remaining day and learn something new? It would be such a wasted opportunity on our unique journey of life to give in prematurely. ■

However, changing the way we talk and think about aging and focusing more on how younger and older people are similar and different encourages community and can dismantle ageist stereotypes.

Lind shared an experience that happened over dinner with some new neighbors. As she sat down with the young family at the dinner table, the 11-year-old boy, Rykker, turned to his dad and said, “That old lady…’”

He was talking about Chris.

“I think for a split second he forgot I was there,” she said. “He could have swallowed his face inside and out.”

But Lind used the mishap as a learning experience, telling Rykker that two letters can make a huge difference.

“Older is okay, but not old,” she said. She also suggested that he call her by her name.

Days later, he was at Lind’s door showing her a frog he’d caught.

“I told him, ‘Good luck with that and your parents,’” said Chris.

To which he replied, “Okay, Grandma.”

Lind told him as long as it was okay with his parents, then it was okay with her. ■

om Papa, one of my favorite comedic authors, said there’s an epidemic threatening our country and only one group who can stop it because they’re the ones doing it.

Apparently no one has told baby boomers they’re now senior citizens. They still think they’re at Woodstock, riding motorcycles, smoking pot and living the good life.

“It has to stop,” said Papa. “We need you to act your age because we need old people.”

Comically, he’s talking about those who wear sweaters year round, play bingo, knit, bake cookies, and talk about the good ol’ days. Personally, I’m not convinced boomers are going to cooperate.

Case in point: I recently asked my three siblings, who range in age from 57-73, and their spouses, how they felt about being called seniors.

What I got was a lengthy pause followed by looks that made me wonder if I’d grown another head.

“I don’t let society or organizations like AARP and discounts define me,” my sister Becky said.

Her husband, Charlie, put it this way: If you didn’t know the year you were born, how old would you feel?

Maybe the word “senior” doesn’t register with my family, who all live in Wisconsin, like it does with residents here. Despite the biased, negative age-based judgments that come with aging, there’s also a lot of good, which doesn’t make “senior” a bad thing.

“I’m proud of my age and wear it like a badge of honor,” said Chris Lind, 67. “When we’re young, we’re self-centered and can miss special moments. Life is an interesting journey. I’m much more reflective,

isiting Hawaii had been on our bucket list for quite some time when my husband and I finally planned our trip and went. Interestingly enough, the decision to visit Kauai in particular came as the result of failing to win a contest.

In order to win a free trip, contestants were asked to write a brief essay on the botanical gardens they would most like to visit. I picked the National Botanical Gardens in Kauai. I didn’t win, but after researching the gardens, the need to visit became an obsession. All the Hawaiian islands are beautiful, but we wanted a more relaxed environment and lots of colorful plants and flowers—and we weren’t disappointed!

island in the chain, is nicknamed the “Garden Isle” because its Mount Waialeale receives over 400 inches of rainfall. As a result, much of the island is covered by tropical rain forest. A large portion of the island can only be reached by boat or helicopter, where its native plants thrive.

he only thing that has gotten me through this crazy year has been relying on God and his Word in my life.

As you enter the new year, ponder the names, titles, metaphors and descriptors of Jesus. Think about what each name means in every situation in which you find yourself this year. You’ll come to understand he’s sufficient in every circumstance—large or small.

Will life return to normal this year or be packed with more weirdness? Either way, here are some technology tips that can help you achieve your New Year’s resolutions and improve your life in 2022.

NEVER FORGET A PASSWORD If your life depended on you finding your Gmail or Netflix password in the next 60 seconds, could you?

So many people set their browsers to autofill their passwords that most don’t even remember setting one up. Make 2022 the year you never forget another password by installing a password manager.

A password manager scrambles and encrypts all of your passwords and stores them in the cloud. You can even set one up to create extremely complicated passwords for you.

My favorite third-party password manager is LastPass, but there are many to choose from and they all essentially work the same. Password managers keep everything behind their own username and password, which means the master password you create with them is the only password you actually have to remember.

It may seem scary to have your passwords stored in the cloud, but the encryption is unbreakable.

And, being able to access your passwords from anywhere using the app on your phone is extremely beneficial when trying to sign into your email or bank from a friend or family member’s computer.

here’s one question every consumer should ask the pharmacy when making the initial purchase of a new prescription. But we tend not to ask questions. We just slap down our cards and wait for a computer to tell the pharmacy how much money to collect from us.

Earlier this month, I was given a new prescription by my doctor.

If it proves helpful, it’s something I might take perennially. Unfortunately, until you get to the pharmacy, you probably won’t be told how much the drug will cost, how much your health insurer will chip in for it or how much you’ll be expected to pay out of your pocket. The prescription might even go directly from doctor to pharmacist electronically, never being placed in your hands—which means you 2368 Research Parkway won’t know how to spell the Colorado Springs, CO even 80920 darned drug.

out. But with the pharmaceutical industry, there’s no way around it because the cost comes from the insurance company and it varies greatly from one insurer to another.

So I went to the local momand-pop pharmacy to get my first month’s dosage of this drug.

Though I didn’t know it when I entered the shop, there is a generic version available (doctors don’t automatically mention these things).

Therefore, the purchase would cost me much less than I had feared— about $22 and change out of my pocket for a month’s supply, said Carl the pharmacist.

But before paying, I asked Carl the one question that all consumers should ask when starting a new prescription: “How much would it be without the insurance?”

Normally you can expect a great difference in drug costs between a person with health insurance and a person without. That difference could get magnified manyfold if

As a rule, the cost via insurance is lower—sometimes considerably lower—or there is no difference at all. Ah, but every once in a while, the consumer with no insurance at all, or the consumer with just a freely dispensed drug-saving card that some pharmacies honor and other pharmacies choose not to, pays less than a consumer using expensive insurance. (Don’t ask why.

There’s no rhyme or reason to the pricing of drugs.)

Carl happily obliged my request by researching the answer. Without insurance, the cost would be $13.50 which, you’ll note, is about $9 less

the pharmacy benefit managers that act as a sort of subcontractor for the health insurance providers.

However, if you broach the subject, the pharmacy is required to answer your question.

So let’s take a step back and think this through.

I’ve asked around. It seems that until roughly two years ago, pharmacies were not permitted to alert you upfront on those occasions when it would cost you less if you circumvented the insurance.

They were under a type of “gag order” implemented by some of

U

sually, realizing you’re out of laundry soap is not a moment of utter despair. Just drive to the nearest store, spend $13 for detergent, wash your desired garment, slip it on and go. But when you factor in a self-imposed ban on using your credit card for purchases and have no cash in your pocket, it’s a recipe for frustration. That’s the situation I found myself in recently.

After a momentary tantrum that included one or two not-ready-forgrandkids words, I accepted the reality: I needed to choose a new outfit for that evening’s event. What I thought was a disaster turned out to be a blessing. The runner-up garment proved to be much more comfortable and suitable. I chalked it up as a win.

Several days later, I began researching do-it-yourself laundry detergent recipes on the internet.

I wasn’t surprised to find an abundance of resources—what surprised me was that they were all basically the same recipe, containing three ingredients: borax, washing soda and a natural bar of soap. At a big-box store, four pounds of borax and washing soda cost $3.99 each and a bar of a natural soap costs just 99 cents.

When I had cash in my wallet once again, I headed to the store, having been guaranteed by the universe’s DIY gurus that these items could be easily found. The gurus were honest and true—the borax and washing soda sat among the laundry detergents. The bar soap rested comfortably just west of the pharmacy.

At home, I proudly showed off my purchases to my husband and got to work grating the bar soap with my cheese grater. He remembered his mother grating soap in his childhood, which probably meant she, too, made her own detergent.

Once the soap resembled soft, white curls of cheese, I added

one cup of borax and one cup of washing soda. The next step was to store the mixture in an airtight container. I chose a mason jar from our cabinet and slapped on a mailing label I had on hand: “Laundry, add 1-3 tablespoons per load.” Stir.

Measure. Wash. Wait. It was that simple.

The virgin laundry load was full of my husband’s dirty work jeans.

His response would be the determining factor as to whether we’d continue using my new detergent or not.

Pulling them out of the dryer several hours later, he gave them a quick once-over. Then he pulled his favorite, battered jeans up over his hips, buttoned the fly, and declared, “Looks good.”

Feeling encouraged by my simple success, I perused the internet once more for dishwasher soap.

I was pleased to find the two main ingredients were borax and washing soda. The recipe I used called for white distilled vinegar to be added in the rinse cycle. My dishwasher does not share such personal information with me, so I just took greater care to rinse the dishes before loading them. I closed the lid, selected the smart wash cycle and hoped for the best. The dishes appeared clean, but running my hand across the surface revealed they were gritty and covered in fingerprints. Apparently, adding vinegar really does matter!

I’ve been bitten by the DIY bug. I felt a connection to generations of women before me and wondered what cleaning supplies they made at different times in history, before we became so dependent on big business for our needs. Now if I can only figure out how to make my own borax, washing soda and pure bar soap. ■

The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management (PPROEM) has launched Pikes Peak Prepared, a new app to help the community prepare for disasters. The new app delivers vital information and tools, including digital guides, videos, news articles, checklists and FAQs to help individuals prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies in the area. In addition, it features a space to build your own emergency plan customized to your specific needs. Some cell phones won’t work in 2022

A lot of older cell phones using 3G, including the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S4, as well as many of the flip phones, will become obsolete in 2022 as mobile providers make the switch to 5G networks.

More than 4 in 10 Americans are undecided or aren’t planning on getting a flu shot this year, a new survey found. Although last year’s flu season was relatively mild, there’s no guarantee this year will follow suit. With the Omicrom strain of COVID continuing its spread, the fear of overcrowding

Although they can look relatively harmless, they carry an electric current strong enough to cause serious injury and possibly death. Immediately call your local utility company or 911 if you spot one. If you see a downed power line, move away shuffling in small steps, keeping your feet together on the ground at all times and avoid touching it. If you see someone who is in direct or indirect contact with the downed line, do not touch the person. Do not attempt to move a downed power line or anything in contact with the line by using another object such as a broom or stick. Do not drive over downed lines. Response: VA does offer survivor benefits

’m writing in response to the oped published in the November issue, titled “Opinion: Suicide should not affect VA survivor benefits.”

In it, Mr. Jarnig writes, “…if an active-duty military person or a veteran dies from suicide, by rule their spouse and minor children lose all benefits. No survivor benefits, period—even if the soldier was being treated for PTSD.” The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) very mission is to “Care for him who shall have borne the battle, and his widow, and his orphan.” Congress has mandated VA to compassionately consider each claim for benefits. As a categorical statement, Mr. Jarnig’s statement is not accurate. Suicide as the cause of death does not automatically exclude survivors from entitlement to benefits.

VA provides benefits to survivors and dependents of veterans who have passed, even in tragic cases of suicide. According to VA regulations, the surviving spouse may be eligible for benefits if VA can connect the suicide to a service-connected illness or injury—the very same consideration afforded to any survivor applying for VA benefits.

When the death is determined to be service connected, the surviving spouse and dependent children are eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, Education Benefits, Loan Guaranty and other survivor benefits (38 CFR 3.302).

If a death is not ruled to be service connected, some survivor benefits are denied. However, basic burial and insurance benefits, such as Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI), are still payable.

VA Burial Allowances are flat-rate monetary benefits to help cover eligible veterans’ burial and funeral

costs. Generally, they are paid at the maximum amount allowed by law. Claimants may seek reconsideration of any adverse VA decision using the administrative process managed by the Veterans Benefits Administration and may also file a formal appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

Even though the rate of suicide among veterans decreased from 2018 to 2019, veteran suicide is a national tragedy. VA Secretary Denis McDonough is a forceful advocate for victims of suicide and its causes: “Suicide prevention remains a top priority for VA, with the most significant amount of resources ever appropriated and apportioned to VA suicide prevention. Suicide is preventable, and everyone has a role to play in saving lives.”
