THE ART OF VOLUNTEERING Art Heritage volunteers promote creativity in local schools Story and photos by Benita Bramer n the fall of 1990, I stood in front of the entrance to my son’s kindergarten room. His eyes were as big as saucers and mine were misting over.

I

class, I automatically assumed that everyone there was or had been an art major. I relaxed after overhearing a few conversations and I realized that it was nearly everyone else’s first time as well.

Suddenly, he let go of my hand and his teacher led him into the line of children waiting to enter their classroom for the first time. His new backpack hung below his waist as he waddled forward. I watched his perfectly gelled little head bob along then disappear through the doorway and around the corner.

By the end of the training, I was excited to get started. I began by teaching art lessons to kindergartners and continued teaching in every grade as my own children progressed through elementary school.

Now I teach in my grandchildren’s classes. By the time my youngest child left for middle school in 2001, I had volunteered with the Art Heritage program for 11 years.

I knew in that moment that I had to find a way into that classroom and to experience this part of his big new world.

I looked into volunteer opportunities with School District 51. By week two, one volunteer position remained unfilled: teaching art.

At the time, the Art Heritage program was new to the district. The name both intrigued and intimidated me—after all, I’m no artist.

When I arrived at the first training

WHAT IS ART HERITAGE?

Art Heritage is a trained volunteer program designed to bring art culture and history into local elementary schools, and to introduce famous artists and their work to children.

In the late 1980s, many people considered art to be more of a luxury rather than a necessary tool for developing brain functions and fine

motor skills. Many schools eliminated art programs from their curricula, as more emphasis and money was being put toward technology, computer skills and test scores.

The Art Heritage program was created for School District 51 by a committee of creative professionals consisting of local business people, Junior Service League members, teachers and Mesa State College professors, to find solutions to the problems children faced due to lack of funding. They learned about The Great Artists Program in Bend, Oregon, and obtained permission to use the prototype at Nisley Elementary.

Pleased with the results and the program’s success, the committee and school board expanded it to include several more schools across the valley. Today, the Art Heritage Program is in 27 schools and reaches approximately 8,000 children every school year.

EXPLORING CREATIVITY

For the first eight years, only 12 artists were featured in the program’s lessons. Now the updated collection of artist biographies takes up a full three-drawer filing cabinet in the corner of Brady’s former office.

She researched and wrote many of them herself.

“The artist must stand out,” Brady said about the process of choosing artists to include in the lessons.

“The artist must have had some influence on other artists throughout their lifetime, and their lives and lifestyles must be relatable to the children.”

The artist’s personal creative processes are also important, and their artistic style must be simple enough for children and volunteers to replicate in the classroom.

Lessons cover a range of periods and movements in art history, from prehistoric to impressionism and abstract to sculpture. Nearly every known genre of art is covered.

By the time students move on to middle school, they will have studied 36 different artists. Participating schools are assigned an artists’ rotation each year so that no student ever studies the same artist twice.

Every project is chosen and placed in the rotation so that different artists, styles, mediums and skills are presented, encouraging students to explore their own creativity.

“There are many children today who have never been exposed to any kind of art in their lives,” Brady said. “They have no idea how to hold a paint brush or what to do

Art Heritage opens a whole new world for children to explore through art. While some kids may never get the opportunity to see a Rembrandt or Picasso in an art museum, Art Heritage classes teach them about notable artists and allow them to dabble in projects to enhance their overall understanding of art and different mediums.

Volunteers come from all walks of life: retired teachers, business people, parents and grandparents.

Many parents volunteer while their kids are young, but once they move on to middle school and become involved in new activities, so do the parents.

Brady said the belief that art is not essential in education is misguided.

When citizens see Art Heritage volunteers in action, they notice how many areas of the child’s brain are being used as they plan their project, implement skills and techniques, and even make mistakes.

The program has received greater respect and support from the educational community thanks to Brady. Art Heritage has impacted approximately 160,000 students during her tenure and thousands more in prior years.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

While the program has grown and changed marginally over the years, one thing that hasn’t changed is the children’s joy and excitement when a volunteer enters the class-

But this one-of-a-kind program wouldn’t be as successful without its volunteers.

“There are some schools in our district that have no volunteers at all,” Brady said. “Help is needed district wide.”

Although my family roots are in Wisconsin, I’ve called the Western Slope home for the past 33 years.

M

y parents secretly predicted my eventual move West, but I had to figure it out on my own.

In 1967, our family of six piled into our ’64 Oldsmobile for a monthlong road trip touring the West. I was glued to the window, leaving no doubt in my parents’ minds that their skinny, curly-headed, nineyear-old daughter was eventually going to move West.

I moved from Wisconsin to Minneapolis after college in 1980, to lead the life of my idol, Mary Tyler Moore. I wanted to be a single business woman, too, feisty and fun-loving.

They move slower. In the city, you get so busy. Here you have more time to actually participate in things.”

In July 1982, I headed to Colorado on a camping vacation, looping through Grand Junction and its 100-degree plus heat. I remember seeing the desert’s stark contrast to the lush Midwest, convinced we had taken a wrong turn and landed on the moon. Just two years later, I yearned for more.

Forever a horse lover, but never a horse owner, I spent one of the best weeks of my life at a dude ranch in Mancos in 1984. I called myself a “dudette,” learned to twostep, ate tons of hearty ranch food and breathed in the fresh air and wild scenery.

I was falling in love with the Western Slope. I loved its friendly people, slower pace, year-round sunshine and playground of untamed public land.

I returned to Minneapolis, but couldn’t get the Western Slope out of my mind. Just three months later, while waiting at a bus stop for my daily ride downtown in sub-zero weather, I decided to make a phone call that would change my life.

I called Lake Mancos Ranch and asked if I could work for them the upcoming summer. When they said yes, I quit my job, sublet my apartment and packed up my Honda Civic. I was going to be a cowgirl for the next five months.

I rode nearly every day that summer—I was in heaven. It was a welcome reprieve from my six-daysa-week job cooking breakfast and lunch for 120 guests and staff.

By mid-summer, I knew that experiencing a Western Slope winter was a must. A family in Telluride hired me as their nanny, providing room, board and a season ski pass. Need I say more? That was 1985, and I never returned to the Midwest other than to collect my belongings and visit family over the years.

I wouldn’t trade the three amazing years I spent in Telluride for anything. They were filled with adventures I never dreamed I would have.

I’ve called Grand Junction home since 1988. I wake up every day feeling blessed to live in this spectacular corner of the planet among some of the world’s best people. ■

Middle Eastern-Inspired Bean Salad Prep Time: 20 minutes Servings: 6 1

can (15 ounces) READ 3 or 4 Bean Salad 1/2 cup halved cherry or grape tomatoes 1 small cucumber (4-5 inches long), cut in half lengthwise then thinly sliced crosswise 2 green onions, thinly sliced 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint

1 small clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Dressing: 2 tablespoons prepared hummus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon za’atar seasoning blend

INSTRUCTIONS: Drain bean salad. Discard liquid. Place bean salad in large bowl.

Add tomatoes, cucumber, onions, parsley, mint, garlic and red pepper flakes to bean salad. Toss to combine.

To make dressing: Combine hummus, lemon juice and seasoning; set aside.

Add dressing to salad just before serving; toss to combine well.

Getting the pig-eye from the grave Dear Old Bag: The other day we had a family get-together that was filled with fun, chaos and children. I overheard two of my nieces talking and one said, “We should ask Old Aunt Margaret.” I almost choked on my margarita. They were talking about me—and I’m only 56 years old! I wanted to give these girls a whack upside the head and tell them 56 is not old! Maybe I should talk to my sister (their mother) about educating them. What do you think? Signed, Insulted Dear Insulted: Pardon me, but I had a good laugh. I can remember my niece thinking 40 was old. Now I’m almost 79, and I don’t even think 80 is old! Age is just a number. I suppose we should take the word “old” right out of our speech because it makes so many people feel uptight. I volunteer in a classroom as a parateacher for autistic children. One day a young boy told me, “Grandma Gayle, your face has many roads on it.”

After a good laugh, I replied, “Yes, and they are well-traveled roads.”

Learn to laugh it off. Laugh wrinkles are better than wrinkles from frowning. Enjoy aging. Many do not have the privilege. OB Dear Old Bag: My mother is 65 years old and has a chronic illness.

Her health has greatly declined over the last five years. The doctors said there’s a chance that she could have a liver transplant, but she doesn’t want more treatment. She’s tired. I’m the oldest of her four children, and I say we should honor her wishes. My siblings are doing everything they can to talk her into signing up for a transplant. Just curious what you think. Signed, Dilemma Dear Dilemma: That is a heavy burden you are carrying. I can only tell you what I hope my kids would do, which is to honor my wishes. It is my body, and no other person can know what I am going through. It’s not my desire to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to live a few more months. If it is yours, I respect that, too. Dear Old Bag: I am a widower of four years and I finally joined a dating site, however, I cannot bring myself to get very friendly with anyone. There seems to be some nice women on there, but every time I start to get friendly, I feel like my deceased wife is giving me the pig-eye. Storage areas: Keep only what you will use. Donate, sell or pack away the rest. Organize what you keep, and keep it off the floor.

Windows: Cleaning your windows inside and out lets in more light, which makes your home show better.

Walls and ceilings: Remove cobwebs, clean light fixtures, wash walls and wipe down doors, grates, baseboards, woodwork and trim. Touch up paint if necessary.

Pantry: Discard old items. Keep cans with cans and boxes with boxes, etc.

Drinker’s nose has nothing to do with drinking

W

.C. Fields, the vaudevillian and comedic actor in early films, was known to hoist more than an occasional beer, but he didn’t get his red, bumpy nose from alcohol.

Rosacea often starts with what looks like a blush, then progresses to red pimples and bumps filled with pus. Tiny blood vessels may become noticeable. The skin on the nose may become thick and red.

Fields had rosacea, a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling in 16 million Americans. It usually affects the face, but it can also strike the scalp, neck, ears, chest, back and even eyes, making them appear bloodshot.

Symptoms usually begin in adults between the ages of 30 and 60.

Women are afflicted more so than men, but men get more severe forms of the disease. The disease also tends to run in families and affects people with fair skin.

Commonly known as “drinker’s nose,” research has debunked the old tale that rosacea is caused by heavy drinking. Alcohol aggravates rosacea, but is not the cause. Another myth is that rosacea is adult acne, but this disease has little to do with pimples and blackheads.

When women with rosacea go through menopause, they may experience additional flushing.

Science hasn’t found a cause, nor is there a cure. However, dermatologists can attack the symptoms with oral and topical medication, laser surgery and other treatments if the disease is caught early. It may take two months of treatment before the affected skin looks better.

Don’t pass up the salt

B

efore you reach for the saltshaker, know that the kind of salt you eat matters. Table salt found in most kitchens and restaurants is similar to the industrial chemical used to de-ice highways. Not very appetizing, is it?

Despite its bad rap as a prime driver of heart disease, good salt is actually an essential component of a healthy diet. Even the mainstream medical establishment is starting to understand that good salt isn’t the bad guy it’s been made out to be. In 2010, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found the risk of heart disease and related deaths actually rises with seemingly modest salt reductions, which is the opposite of what you’ve been led to believe.

This is troubling when you consider that the U.S. Dietary Guidelines have steadily recommended Americans reduce their sodium intake from 6,000 mg per day in 2005 to 2,300 mg per day in 2015. Another 2010 study published by researchers out of Harvard found a link between a low-salt diet and an increase in insulin resistance, which is the gateway problem that leads to diabetes and obesity.

Table salt is so refined that I consider it a food additive and not a food.

It’s high in sodium and chloride, and it has been stripped of life-sustaining minerals like copper, iodine, potassium, magnesium, chromium, zinc and iron. It’s nutritionally naked. There’s nothing left except sodium chloride.

Refined table salt is often mixed with chemicals such as talc, a possible carcinogen found in baby powder, to keep salt from clumping up inside your shaker.

Sea salt is different. In fact, avoiding unrefined sea salt could actually be bad for your health.

Unrefined sea salt is essentially water from a sea (or river) that gets evaporated and purified. These types of salts should not dramatically impact blood pressure like table salt, and they offer healthy minerals that drive thousands of metabolic reactions all day long. Here’s a list of some of the beneficial salts: Pink Himalayan salt. The pink color comes from iron oxide, but this salt has over 80 trace minerals—the most of any type of salt.

Red alaea Hawaiian salt. This sea salt starts white but then develops a beautiful rich red color when it’s dried in salt ponds that are lined with red volcanic clay (known as “alaea”). That red hue comes from the presence of iron.

Celtic or French grey sea salt. A good source of magnesium, this salt comes from France and gets its color from the clay found in the tidal pools where the salt is dried.

Cyprus or Hawaiian black lava salt. This naturally occurring sea salt is mixed with activated charcoal, which gives it its black color. It has lower sodium content per gram than Himalayan salt, which means you can use more of it without getting an overly salty taste. ■

An estimated 2.3 percent of adults are afflicted with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) according to the National Institute of Mental Health. For many, the symptoms begin in childhood or adolescence. This anxiety disorder is a neurological malfunction that creates unrelenting, intrusive thoughts and extreme anguish for those affected.

O

bsessions range from unbearable worries about contamination to believing they have run over someone while driving. These fears can be alleviated only one way— by acting out compulsions, which become repetitive acts of checking and rechecking to ensure the fear is unfounded.

Although OCD was added to the American Psychiatric Association’s “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM-III) in 1987, many people still live with its destruction, unaware there’s help or even a name for their bizarre fears and behaviors.

“Families often don’t know that they have a sick child,” said Dr. Judith L. Rapoport, MD, in “The Boy Who Couldn’t Stop Washing.” Children may keep their obsessions and compulsions a secret in order to avoid appearing crazy.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER EFFECTS ON FAMILY

The devastation of OCD isn’t seen in just the adult or child with the disorder. OCD has a negative impact on the whole family. Families often destruct from the stress caused by the disorder. It’s not unusual for the OCD sufferer to rely on family members to help alleviate their fears. The sufferer may insist

that a child, parent or spouse check electrical outlets or may badger loved ones with constant questions for reassurance.

In homes where fear of contamination is the obsession, OCD effects on family are seen as members are banned from certain rooms or areas of the home—an effort by the sick person to prevent contamination of the areas. Family members may also be required to live up to unreasonable standards of cleanliness to satisfy the OCD person.

In other homes, compulsions such as hoarding are so out of hand the home literally becomes a maze.

WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

To understand the OCD mind, many researchers explain the brain is stuck, in a sense. It replays a particular thought over and over again like a broken record. In other words, it tricks the sufferer. They cannot trust their own judgment.

Those who don’t understand OCD often tell the afflicted, “Why don’t you just stop?”

But it isn’t that simple. Researchers believe the disorder is neurobiological. Therefore, the obsessions are not a matter of choice. Differences have been found in the brain of OCD sufferers through brain imaging techniques. Some studies have found abnormalities in the neurotransmitters, such as serotonin.

The occurrence of OCD is also higher in families with depressive and anxiety disorders. For most, there’s no known event that relates to their particular obsession(s).

Still, researchers feel environmental stressors may play at least some role in the development of OCD for those who are biologically predisposed.

IS THERE HELP?

Although there’s no known cure for OCD, there are a number of treatments available.

The two most common, effective and proven forms of treatment available for OCD are psychotropic drugs and behavioral therapy. Many doctors suggest medication in combination with behavioral therapy so suffers can learn techniques to relieve or stop the intrusive thoughts and to control compulsive behaviors.

Caution should be used in weighing all treatment options. Some purported treatments are not supported by a preponderance of evidence.

Questionable treatments for OCD include psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, psychosurgery and electro

convulsive therapy (ECT).

The severity of untreated OCD generally tends to worsen over time. It can become completely debilitating.

If someone in your family has symptoms of OCD, contact your mental health provider for a confidential evaluation. With proper treatment, many OCD sufferers are able to lead normal and productive lives.

The negative OCD effects on family might also indicate behavioral treatment for the family to learn coping strategies.

A dad makes a difference

At the exact same time during the work week, he burst through the back door, and Mom poured him a hot cup of coffee and placed warm homemade oatmeal cookies under his handsome face. He looked up at her and asked, “Hey, Ann, what came in the mail?”

“Gee, Shel,” she sighed, “Never a ‘Hello,’ just ‘What came in the mail?’”

I lived at home until I was 19 and this dialogue never varied. But would you believe for us five kids it was a form of security—something we could always count on?

Again, it was like food for our souls because we were all together as a family.

Please don’t let me mislead you.

You’d be crazy to think we were a scene out of “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.” It was more like the “Cavalcade of Sports” with all the pushing, shoving of elbows and tackling of food.

“Kids!” Dad yelled just before sitting down to supper. “Come to the table before your milk gets cold.”

That’s about as witty as he got and we roared with laughter, thinking he was the funniest card around.

Sometimes after supper and just before bedtime, Dad snuck into the kitchen, rattled the pots and pans around and came out with his famous fudge. This was a rare treat, so we barely swallowed the sweet

Going to bed in the winter meant retiring to frigid rooms where we saw our breath. We weren’t snuggled up very long under thin blankets before we felt an extra warmth settle over us. Dad covered us up with our heavy winter coats, which made us feel safe and secure from the cold outside world.

On Sundays after church, while Mom fixed dinner, I crawled into my father’s lap and we played this silly little game, “Go Get The Ashtray.”

Dad locked his strong legs around my little waist and while I squirmed and struggled to get away, he said, “Go get the ashtray!” Of course, I couldn’t budge, but he playfully hit my arms and repeated, “Go get the ashtray!”

I have happy tears remembering my 91-year-old dad as he used to be.

My fervent wish today is for every child to have a dad who scoops them up into his lap and plays “Go Get The Ashtray.”

For all those dads who played with their kids, worked for their families, loved their wives, and took only a few moments for themselves, may every day be your day. ■

Peanuts: Charles Schulz’ mini-autobiography

By Randal C. Hill n each of the nearly 18,000 “Peanuts” comic strips he produced, Charles Schulz is omnipresent in each of his pen-and-ink characters.

I

He once told Steve Kroft on “60 Minutes,” “If you were to read the strip for just a few months, you would know me…all of my fears, my anxieties, my joys and almost even all of my experiences go into that strip.”

Schulz was born in Minneapolis in 1922. The arc of Schulz’s life was established two days after his birth when an uncle gave him the nickname “Sparky,” inspired by the cartoon horse Spark Plug, a character from the comic strip “Barney Google.”

An only child, Schulz proved to be a naturally gifted artist who, from age 6, was determined to have a career in cartooning. Following his high school graduation and an Army stint as a draftee, he took a job grading lessons at Minneapolis’s Art Instruction, where he had taken a correspondence course in adolescence.

In his off-hours he created “Li’l Folks,” which became a locally popular comic strip in the St. Paul Pioneer Press before United Feature Syndicate (UFS) changed the name and debuted Peanuts nationally in October 1950.

Why the name change? UFS felt that the title “Li’l Folks” came too close to Al Capp’s popular comic strip “Li’l Abner.”

At the time, kids who sat in the studio bleachers in the TV audience of

“Howdy Doody Show” were called peanuts, which was derived from a vaudeville term describing patrons who sat in the cheaper balcony seats—the peanut gallery—and sometimes tossed goobers onto the stage below to show displeasure.

UFS executives liked the title “Peanuts” and overruled Sparky.

Schulz despised the name that made him famous and was determined that his concession to UFS would be the only one where he let anyone or anything influence his work. For nearly 50 years, he maintained control of a comic strip that he alone wrote, drew and lettered by hand seven days a week.

“Peanuts” featured a simply drawn group of oddly proportioned, balloon-headed kid characters that included Charlie Brown, Patty, Shermy, Violet, Schroeder, Lucy, Linus, Pig-Pen and the dog Snoopy, whom he based on a bizarre family pet who sometimes devoured pins and tacks. The comic strip often focused on Charlie Brown, the bumbling, insecure worrywart, who, along with his sometimes-cruel gang of neighborhood peers, spent his days stumbling through the minefield of childhood social interactions.

Through his characters, Schulz offered themes never before addressed in a mainstream cartoon strip: isolation, loneliness, melancholia, unrequited love—all stemming from his interior life.

The most famous, revered and influential comic strip in history, “Peanuts” earned Charles Schulz over a billion dollars and won him worldwide fame and respect.

But, sadly, all of his success never allowed him to dispel the cloud of depression that hung over his life yet fueled his creativity for nearly half a century. ■ “Peanuts” earned Charles Schulz worldwide fame and respect.

A man moves into a nudist colony.

He receives a letter from his mother asking him to send her a current photo of himself at his new home. Too embarrassed to let her know he lives in a nudist colony, he cuts a photo in half and sends her the top part.

Later, he receives another letter from his mother asking him to send a picture to his grandmother. The man cuts another picture in half, but accidentally sends the bottom half of the photo.

He panics upon realizing he sent the wrong half, but quickly calms down once he remembers how bad his grandmother’s eyesight is.

A few weeks later he receives a letter from his grandmother that reads, “Thank you for the picture. Change your hairstyle. It makes your nose look short!”

JOE HAD SHINGLES

She wrote down his name, address and insurance information, and told him to have a seat.

Fifteen minutes later, a nurse’s aide came out and asked Joe what he had. He said, “Shingles.”

She wrote down his height and weight, collected his medical history and told him to wait in the examining room.

A half hour later, a nurse came in and asked Joe what he had. Again, Joe replied, “Shingles.”

The nurse gave him a blood test, a blood pressure test and an electrocardiogram, and told him to take

While many plants like tomatoes, peppers, corn and squash enjoy full sun, others are happier in partial shade. Give shade to broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower to slow flowering and encourage tighter heads. Leafy greens will turn bitter and bolt quickly in our hot summer sun, so planting them in a spot with some afternoon shade will make for more tender leafs.

Vertical space invites shade and creates a more dynamic garden environment. Sunflowers and corn cast shade on shorter plants to protect them from the hot afternoon sun. A wall of trellised cucumbers or squash can act in the same way.

But she still has quite the reputation among other feather fanciers, and her chickens are in great demand by other breeders. She has won numerous championships in shows of all sizes—some which featured as many as 10,000 birds.

I don’t mean the packaged kind from the grocery store that you bought for dinner. I mean a live bird with feathers and all.

While most people don’t wash their pet chickens, it’s an important part of Karen Derrick’s ritual to ensure her championship bantams are ready to show at competitions throughout the U.S. Derrick, of Palisade, was raised around animals. She started collecting unique feathered creatures early on, such as chickens with top knots or feathers on their feet, and ones that laid colored eggs. At one time, finches from around the world and racing homing pigeons

were added to her collection of feathered friends, along with turkeys, ducks, guineas, pheasants and quail.

“At the state and county fairs, I was always drawn to the poultry barn,” Derrick said. “After showing dairy goats in the 1970s, I decided to [show] bantams, a miniaturized version of large fowl.”

She raised and showed black wyandotte, cochins and silkies, then discovered modern game bantams at a show in Phoenix. These birds, which are now bred strictly for show, are descendants of pit games, which were bred in England in the early 1800s for cock fights.

poultry shows. The fighting gene was eliminated over time, and Derrick said the birds are very docile.

Modern games are the only birds Derrick raises that must be trained to assume a certain pose for the judge. She trains her birds using a small stick and a treat, as they eventually learn to follow hand signals.

Derrick also raises Belgian Bearded d’Anvers, a miniature breed that is often identified by its quail color, “beard” and “earmuffs” from its lightly-colored feathers.

Derrick travels thousands of miles each year showing her blue ribbon bantams.

“Winnings barely cover my expenses, so it’s mostly just a hobby,” she said.

Judging a poultry show is quite different from a horse show, Derrick said. For example, Shetland ponies don’t have to compete against large breeds like Quarter Horses, and poultry show judges assess breed type, color and variety, and feather quality and condition, then pick the Best of Variety, Best of Breed and Best of Class from the bantams entered. Once the Champion Bantam is chosen, it competes against the Champion Large Fowl for the ultimate prize—Best of Show.

“It’s humiliating to get beat out by a duck!” Derrick laughed.

In 2015, Rocky Mountain Feather Fanciers dedicated their annual fall show to Derrick for her dedication to poultry showmanship and support of the club.

“Raising and showing poultry has been a fun experience,” she said.

By Anita Alexandra usical rhythm is the thread that ties together all the stanzas, bridges and choruses in a song. Rhythm in interior design is used to help our eyes move around a room in an organized manner. It takes individual design elements and ties them together through the use of lines, forms, colors and textures. Rhythm is one of the seven basic principles of interior design.

Rhythm in music and design are similar in nature. Consider the rhythmic beat of a song and interior design elements in a room. Your foot taps to a beat in much the same way that your eye bounces around a room to take in design elements. Successful music and successful design occur when elements come together to form a unified whole.

When you walk into a room that’s been professionally designed, you experience the general mood or tone before you consciously notice each item. You see the colors, textures, placements, shapes and accessories and how, in some magical way, it all fits together. The room itself has a type of rhythm.

According to Gestalt psychology, a school of thought that focuses on perception, our brains process information by boiling it down to the simplest recognizable pattern. This means that when entering a room, we register the basic tone before we can focus on any of its individual elements. The more quickly we can simplify the information presented to us, the more likely we are to find it aesthetically pleasing. Incorporating the principle of rhythm in interior design gives us a set of established patterns to fall back on and enables visitors to take in the room’s sensory information as easily as possible.

Here are five techniques that you can utilize to bring a sense of rhythm and movement to your interior spaces.

Tunnel collapse threatens Grand Valley fruit: History of the 1950s Government Highline Canal Tunnel #3 collapse

The 55-mile Government Highline Canal provides irrigation water to approximately 39,000 acres of irrigated land stretching from Palisade east to Orchard Mesa and west to Loma. It passes through three tunnels and three siphons in the first six miles of its route from the Grand River Diversion Dam, the orange-roofed “roller dam” in DeBeque Canyon. Since 1923, the canal has supplied irrigation water for two canals on Orchard Mesa in addition to the Stub Ditch and Price Ditch.

unnel No. 3 was initially completed on June 15, 1915, just before the dam’s official dedication, but it had problems from the beginning. It was located in unstable ground near the site of former coal mines across the river from Rapid Creek.

On March 8, 1950, a 450-foot section of the 1.75-mile long tunnel collapsed. The flow of canal water was blocked just before the irrigation season for “acres of rich agriculture land on which the world’s finest peaches are grown,” The Palisade Tribune reported.

Workers drilled from the four exposed ends of the tunnel and eventually had to re-bore the tunnel through more solid rock. Initial expectations feared repairs would not be completed until July, which would have been especially disastrous for local fruit growers.

Grande Western (D&RGW) railroad tracks. Train traffic, including freight and passenger trains, was stopped as the train tracks shifted several inches and had to be replaced.

Newly elected congressman Wayne N. Aspinall, who grew up in Palisade, influenced the Bureau of Reclamation to perform the repair work.

Some of the workers and their families were housed at Palisade’s former Civilian Conservation Corps Camp.

By April 21, drilling efforts and care-

fully placed dynamite had created a new bore that was successfully being “holed through” ahead of schedule.

The collapsed tunnel was rebuilt and gunite was used to stabilize the walls. Water began flowing again on May 4 in time to save the fruit orchards.

In the 1980s, the D&RGW made additional repairs to the mountain, which continued to move and endanger the railroad tracks through DeBeque Canyon. ■

Race against the clock Epic Escape Game challenges all ages

W

e were locked in a room with only 60 minutes on the clock.

Our only hope of escape was to find clues, crack codes and solve puzzles before time ran out. Could we do it?

It sounds like a TV thriller, but instead of watching the action from the living room sofa, we were part of an Epic Escape Game. This real-life adventure game challenged our wits, skills and teamwork, and was an activity of epic proportion for my whole family.

THE INITIAL CHALLENGE

I’m all about creating memories versus handing out gift cards for Christmas. But with the passing of each year, it becomes more challenging to find an activity that my whole family—three generations, including teenagers—can enjoy together.

We decided to try Epic Escape Game, an interactive adventure in downtown Grand Junction that puts players into a story or themed room where they have 60 minutes to find clues, solve puzzles and escape before time is up.

“Opening a lock and finding the right solution before running out of time is a thrilling experience,” said Epic Escape Game Manager Leslie Kell.

It was my husband, Dan, and I; our daughter, Leslie, and son-in-law, Jim; and two of our grandkids, Lexi, 17, and Daniel, 14. Even though you can have up to six people in a room, our family chose a face off—guys versus girls. The game has four themed rooms for participants to choose from at various levels of difficulty. The three women chose

“The Hunted” and the three men chose “The Watchman’s Chamber.”

The staff of “cluemasters” did a super job of preparing us for our impending adventure. The scenario of each room was well described, as well as safety features such as monitors that kept a constant watch over us. Once “locked” in our respective rooms, we went to work.

Each team was given three “free” calls for assistance in the form of additional clues. Each call after the third costs five minutes off the clock.

For those 60 minutes, we were totally unplugged—uninterrupted by cell phones, computers, generational barriers and the outside world.

It was just the six of us having fun, working toward a common goal and trying to beat the clock.

The women escaped our room in 57 minutes, and the guys were working on their last couple of puzzles when time ran out. But win or lose, we all had a great time.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The game was a hit with my family, even the grandkids. Daniel and Lexi both had fun and said they’d love to do it again—even with the family.

“The perspectives of our different ages helped and made everyone equal on the team,” Leslie said.

“The hour went by so fast.”

It was the perfect outing for creating memories. After the game, we went out to dinner and recapped our experiences, compared strategies and discussed the skills required to beat the game. We all agreed that we’d like to attempt the challenge of another room sometime.

Kell said there’s more benefits to escape rooms than just having fun.

“The act of problem and puzzle solving is actually very beneficial for brain function and brain activity,” she said. “If solving puzzles can help the brain function better, just think what an hour in an escape room can do for you.”

It’s hard to go into detail about how much fun it was without giving away secrets and tips that would affect the experience for other participants. The main advice I can give is to expect the unexpected. I tended to move through the hour expecting things to be orderly and connected, but just like in a true mystery-solving scenario my expectations were unrealistic.

Dan said it requires a lot of thinking outside the box and working together, so go with friends or family.

It’s the perfect activity for family get-togethers, birthday parties, anniversaries, retirement parties, or just to have fun.

The Mosiers are avid hikers and cross-country skiers, spending a lot of time hiking McInnis Canyons, particularly Devil’s Canyon, and cross-country skiing through the winter. Paivi, 59, has finished Ride the Rockies bike race twice. They trained for their trip by hiking regularly on Grand Mesa.

But Grand Mesa has nothing on Peru.

“I found myself gasping while walking through Cusco and wondered how I’d be able to make the trip,” said Dave, 64.

Fortunately, a shaman introduced them to the energizing coca leaf during a ceremony conducted in Quechuan, the local language, and

they started each day with coca tea, then chewed the plant’s leaves through the day.

Although the leaf contains cocaine, it doesn’t make people high.

Its medicinal properties alleviate altitude sickness and allow partakers to breathe more easily at high altitudes. It has been a mainstay for the natives of Peru for centuries, acting as a mild stimulant and suppressing fatigue, hunger, thirst and pain.

The Mosiers booked their hike through Salkantay Trekking without using a travel agent, after Paivi finally convinced Dave it would be a great adventure. They spent a month investigating options.

The guides all spoke three languages—English, Spanish and Quechua—so communication was never a problem. America, Holland, Ireland, Sweden, Australia and Canada were all represented. The Mosiers were among the oldest members of the group.

They started easy, spending two days in Cusco, visiting ruins and other historical sites and getting acclimated to both the altitude and the Incan culture. Then the 12 hikers and six employees began the strenuous trek to the ruins of Machu Picchu.

They carried day packs with food, water and a slicker provided by the company. They furnished their own sleeping bags, which were transported by horse, along with their extra clothes and other heavy gear. Salkantay employees went ahead on horseback to set up camp and prepare gourmet meals so the group had to carry only what they needed for the day.

The hikers stopped frequently to interact with villagers, admiring shrines for ancestors, weavers using backstrap looms and other items of interest. Guinea pig is a staple food throughout Peru, and they are raised inside almost every home.

The Mosiers were astounded to see the rodents’ droppings all over the dirt floors of many huts.

Camp food was gourmet. Dinners included trout, chicken, pork or beef—at least two of each.

“We both loved the healthy meals that always started with soup, and included beans, corn, rice, pumpkins and squash,” said Paivi.

At least once a day they had salads with lots of greens and vegetables.

Peru’s avocados are three to four times as large as those sold in the U.S. and were favorites of the Mosiers.

“We seldom saw oils and fat floating in our food. Everything was so whole and healthy,” Paivi said.

On the trail, every breakfast included eggs, fresh-squeezed juice

(including lima bean juice), bread and porridge made of quinoa, oats, barley or wheat.

They ate like lumberjacks and worked like them, too, as they plodded toward Machu Picchu, following the trails up and down the mountains and through the cloud forest and the rain forest. During rest breaks, they asked the guides questions about food and culture.

A MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE The expedition was blessed with good weather.

“During the wet season, rain can set in and make the hiking miserable,” Dave said. “We were lucky to have blue skies for most of the trip because we came during the dry season.”

The blue skies didn’t last. Four days after they started hiking they reached Machu Picchu in the pouring rain.

“Then at around nine o’clock in the morning the clouds lifted, the rain quit,” said Dave. “Seeing the ruins through the rising clouds was a mystical experience.”

The next morning, the Mosiers climbed Machu Picchu Mountain and spent the afternoon exploring the ruins. Both agreed that their adventure had been well worth the money and the miles they spent to arrive at such a magical destination.

“It was the perfect experience. I don’t think we can top it,” Dave said.

y best friends in school were typically goofy intellectuals, but I spent my weekends playing pool while listening to Black Sabbath and Anthrax with chain-smoking teenage goof-offs.

In class, I had friendly relationships with my teachers and fellow students, but I rarely did the homework. YouTube.com/crashcourse offers hundreds of entertaining abridged lessons in over 100 subjects. It’s sort of like Schoolhouse Rock for those wanting to learn the nitty gritty details of a subject.

5 ways annuities can protect you from the uncertainty of stocks

T

he recent volatility of the stock market, combined with the financial uncertainty facing many people in or near retirement age, could mean a bumpy ride for them down the road.

A Employee Benefit Research Institute study reports that only 21 percent of Americans say they feel “very confident” they’ll have enough money to live comfortably through retirement. Issues driving that lack of confidence include long-term care expenses, the unpredictability of stocks, the reduction in pension programs and reports that many people are behind in retirement savings.

Add the fact that retirees are living longer, and having the dependability of long-term income streams becomes an even bigger factor. In that context, annuities are gaining

interest.

“While annuities are frequently misunderstood and not appropriate for everyone, they can have substantial benefits when used in the right situation,” said Ryan Eaglin, founder and chief advisor of America’s Annuity, a retirement planning firm in Phoenix. “That stream of guaranteed income gives you some financial consistency and predictability, which alleviates stress and concern. With plenty of concern about where stocks are headed, that can be a comfort for a lot of people.”

Eaglin listed five ways that an annuity can work as a hedge against market volatility: Gives income guarantees. Because Social Security and a pension are typically not enough to cover basic expenses in retirement, many

“If all your money is invested in the market and your portfolio starts to go down, you may get nervous about whether your income source is going to last the rest of your life,” Eaglin said. “An annuity can fix this problem by providing income guarantees.”

Prevents a panic sell. “Since a fixed annuity gives more stability to an overall portfolio, your portfolio will typically be less volatile,” Eaglin said. “When the markets correct, your portfolio should not decline as much. If the annuity is providing you a guaranteed income, then you can ride out the dips knowing that your income from the annuity is enough to cover your retirement spending needs.”

term. Declining times for a portfolio don’t necessarily mean it’s time to bail out. “With an annuity, it’s easier to commit long term to a stable portfolio as opposed to a highly volatile one,” Eaglin said.

Avoids market losses. Equities, bonds, commodities—anything you invest in can go down in price. But a fixed annuity does not.

Brings more predictability.

“Investment markets are not predictable, and we live in a world of uncertainty,” Eaglin said. “But with an annuity that can guarantee you a specific interest rate, you can know exactly what it will grow to over time.”

Annuities have some benefits that can help retirees, Eaglin said.

“Stocks can be a great source of income, or a source of great stress, so more people are looking for streams they can count on.”

Protect yourself from schemers, scammers and other creeps

By Teresa Ambord ou’ve heard about the Equifax security breach. Are you one of the 143 million consumers who might be affected?

Other scams related to the breach have also been reported. The FTC gives these tips for recognizing and avoiding phone scams and imposter scams:

The breach was announced last summer, but for victims, the pain could go on and on. The information that might’ve been impacted includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, driver’s license numbers and credit card numbers.

• Don’t give out personal information unless you initiated the call to a number that you know is correct. Some scams (such as email scams) may provide you with a handy phone number to call, claiming to be from a reputable organization such as Equifax, but the phone number may be part of the scam. If you need to call such an organization, look up the number yourself.

Equifax reports the situation is contained but recommends that you be vigilant in reviewing your account statements and credit reports.

Immediately report unauthorized activity to your bank or credit card issuer.

This includes very small transactions, such as a deposit for $1 that you don’t recognize. Thieves sometimes test access to an account by making a tiny deposit. If you see such an unexplained transaction, call your bank or credit card and ask for an explanation.

RELATED SCAMS

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns of a scam they call “Equifax isn’t calling.”

Your phone rings, you answer, and the caller says, “This is Equifax calling to verify your account information.”

Stop! Tell them nothing—they’re not from Equifax, they are scammers.

• Don’t trust caller ID. Scammers are adept at spoofing a company, such as your bank or credit card, so don’t assume caller ID is correct. If the caller asks for personal information, it’s better to hang up, look up the phone number of the supposed caller (your bank, for example), then call and ask if they are trying to reach you.

• If you get a robocall, hang up.

The call may instruct you to press a button to speak to a live operator if you wish to take your number off the call list. Don’t! It will probably result in even more robocalls.

• If you receive such a call, report it at www.ftc.gov. If you received a robocall and gave them information, the FTC urges you to change your compromised passwords, account numbers and security questions. ■

When Brendi Hartsock came on board as manager of Costa Vida just over six short months ago, she focused on letting people know what a treat they were in for when they came inside.

he counter-serve Mexican restaurant, located at 2430 Patterson Road, offers a selection of flavorful entrées—from Baja tacos to enchiladas and burritos— that customers can order and watch as it’s prepared with all fresh ingredients behind the company’s signature “bubble wall.” Customers can make additional selections along the way with suggestions from the restaurant’s helpful staff.

“We only serve fresh food; nothing is frozen,” said Hartsock. “Tortillas are made fresh all day long. In fact, we have a lot of customers who come in just to buy our homemade

It’s important to Hartsock that food is quality and customers are happy with their dining experience. She asks new staff members to sample a variety of dishes so they are knowledgeable about offerings and are able to make recommendations to customers.

The restaurant also has a large selection of gluten-free options.

“Their server will change gloves to make sure when preparing their entrée, everything remains completely gluten free,” Hartsock said.

Costa Vida caters for groups and events as large as 300 people.

They recently attended BeaconFest Boomer & Senior Fair in April, where they served healthy bowls with chicken or sweet pork, pico de gallo and cheese for over 2,000 local seniors.

Ribbons of tangible hope J

By C.J. Payton ust like many women of her day, Justine Merritt upheld the holiday tradition of sending out cards with greetings to loved ones every Christmas.

In 1982, however, she shared a vision, suggesting that friends and family members each create a fabric panel that represented something they couldn’t bear to lose forever in the event of a nuclear war. She wished to tie the panels together with ribbons, as a symbol of unity and hope for peace.

Several loved ones fulfilled her request and sent panels.

An artist and embroiderer, Merritt felt a prayer for peace with every stitch. With help from a small but dedicated following, she calculated how many ribbons and panels it would take to wrap around the pentagon in Washington, DC. On August 4, 1985, thousands of ribbons, with panels created by artists around the country, enveloped not just the Pentagon, but several other buildings in Washington, DC. Merritt, who called the Grand Valley home in the ’90s, continued to be involved in the project on an

Karen Sjoberg, a friend of Merritt’s, resurrected the project locally. Now called the Tangible Hope project, supporters are reintroducing its mission through public and networking events, hoping to encourage others to get involved by creating fabric panels or by lending their time and talents in other beneficial ways.

Panels are easy to make—they can be created using pillowcases, ribbons and safety pins—and the project provides a limited set of technical instructions, as participants are encouraged to create from the heart. There are no aesthetic standards and no limits on the mediums used. Today’s panels should reflect what the contributor couldn’t bear to lose “through war, violence, destruction of the environment, etc.”

“Each panel represents a powerful story of what the maker cherishes and wants to ensure will be around for future generations,” Tangible Hope organizer Deb Allerton said.

Common themes include family, sports, nature, children and pets.

Fredricka Banks recently created a panel she named “The Family of the Forest,” inspired by the movie “Fern Gully.” It denotes her gratitude for trees and the beauty of golden-dap-

pled sunlight shining through them.

Contributors are invited to share their panels in upcoming events, such as the International Day of Peace. The project’s goal is to have enough ribbons to wrap around the Mesa County Central Library and extend to the federal building.

Allerton sees this project as “connecting people on a heart level as their divisions fade away.”

If I ever found myself old and alone, I’d want to live like the Golden Girls. It seems to me those four women captured an ideal form of assisted living—one far more affordable, effective and fun then the kind you purchase with your entire life savings.

F

rom 1985-1992, when NBC aired the popular series, the main characters in “The Golden Girls” lived a nice life. They shared a spacious Miami ranch-style home with a large kitchen, ample dining space, a first-floor laundry room, well-appointed living room, a lanai and garden. All this, at just 25 percent the cost of living similarly on one’s own. And like expenses, chores were shared as well. Each woman did about one quarter of the tasks necessary to a household: cooking, shopping, cleaning, budgeting and paying bills. This arrangement allowed all the girls a contribution big enough to maintain a sense of purpose, but also allowed plenty of free time. Not bad.

The Golden Girls’ model is similar to the way extended families used to live. Before 1960, America glamorized the nuclear family lifestyle, multiple generations of relatives and friends often lived under one roof. A grandparent, sister, uncle or cousin lived with Mom, Dad and the kids. The arrangement cost a bit of privacy, but also helped a family in countless ways. Typically, expenses were shared. So were chores.

ALWAYS THERE

Maybe more importantly, someone was always around to help with everyday stuff: move a chair, carry groceries, babysit, granny-sit, organize pills, remind you to eat—if one was to fall, another was there to find her. That’s how it was with the Golden Girls. If Dorothy was out late at night, Rose and Blanche were there to keep company with Sophia, her elderly mother. In a house full of people you know and trust, scary

things like sounds in the night, blizzards, earthquakes, spiking fevers, and worrisome chest pain are just easier to handle.

RELIVE YOUR YOUNGER YEARS

The Golden Girls had it right— they opted for a comfortable and active lifestyle and chose to give one another assistance rather than pay strangers for it.

Studies have shown that shared housing also contributes to a lightness of spirit. Some psychologists, like Harvard’s Ellen Langer, might say that what kept the Golden Girls vital and socially engaged is a lifestyle that mimicked how they lived in younger years: maybe in a college dorm, or a sorority house, or a loving, extended family situation. Langer’s studies, particularly her early work with the elderly that led to her now famous counterclockwise theory, show that reliving patterns of happier times has positive mental and physical effects.

The singing, laughing, dancing and dining that the girls did together actually may have nurtured their youthful vigor.

Did the Golden Girls have differences? Of course. Arguments? No question. But was their lifestyle worth it? Absolutely. Just consider a couple of alternatives.

THE COSTLY ALTERNATIVES

Living with one’s children is so infrequently proposed today, that it hardly merits mentioning. Most seniors find this option plagued with worry of being unwelcome and fear of being burdensome, both of which are strains on the senior psyche.

Assisted living facilities can give you physical help plus some social interaction. But institutional-type living, even in charming places with relaxed restrictions, signals a loss of independence, and rarely feels like home. Also, it is costly. According to AARP figures released in 2011, private room costs differ among the states and can range anywhere from $28,500-$60,000 annually.

Life isn’t cheap for those living alone either. Besides paying full household expenses, costly inhome care at some point is likely to be needed. The CDC website reports that 1 in 3 adults aged 65 and older falls each year, and that 20 to 30 percent of those who fall suffer an injury that will “make it hard to get around or live independently...”

Any injury or illness, in fact, generally requires some form of light help during recuperation. And then there are other risks like malnutrition, unattended illness, depression and loneliness that affect seniors.

Yes, the Golden Girls had it right.

They opted for a comfortable and active lifestyle, and chose to give one another assistance rather than pay strangers for it. And they had company. Though they sometimes bickered, the girls had a friend at the ready to talk, laugh, cry with... and that at any age is priceless. ■

By Dick Wolfsie e were watching TV one evening last week when my wife asked, “Don’t you think it’s about time we moved?”

W

“Sure,” I said. “I’ll stretch out on the floor with a pillow; you take the couch.”

Apparently that is not what she meant. After 30 years in our house, Mary Ellen now thinks we should be living in a condo—a place where the owners don’t have to mow or water the lawn or shovel snow.

My son will be disappointed if we move. He was making good money doing all that.

My wife is certain we have many good years ahead of us, but she doesn’t believe in having anything above us. Like rooms. Mary Ellen wants everything on one floor. I like going upstairs to go to bed. That’s my 12-step program from Exercis-

ers Anonymous. If we buy a home all on one level, that’s the end of my 30-second evening workout.

So last weekend, despite my misgivings, we started looking for a new place to live. We have this great real estate agent who is the most effusive and energetic person I have ever met. He’s excited about everything. The first condo we looked at, Brad got very emotional about the baseboards that accented the tall walls and high ceilings, the inchthick granite countertops and the stamped concrete patio (whatever that is). He was quick to point out that there was an electrical outlet on the kitchen island where we could make frozen margaritas. And those slow-closing drawers and cabinets? He was ecstatic.

Home shoppers often go into houses while people are still living there, but the homeowners must vacate

their residence when the Realtor is doing a showing. What’s incredible is how perfectly tidy and immaculate everything is. I hadn’t planned on relocating to Stepford.

My wife has fun speculating about the lives of the residents of the homes by just a casual observation of the furnishings.

“This is probably a very nice older man,” she ventured at the last condo we toured, “who may have recently lost his wife and who has six young grandchildren. He loves modern art and reads science fiction.”

“And he makes his own lasagna from scratch,” I said.

“Wait, how did you know the lasagna was homemade?” she asked.

“Relax,” I said. “I washed the fork and put it back in the drawer.”

Mary Ellen and I have totally different sets of criteria regarding what we are searching for in our next home.

I took Brad aside and said, “See if you can find a four-bedroom home with a little alcove for an office, and a finished basement where I can put a TV and an exercise bike. Also, I’d love to have a private back deck with a view of secluded woods. And I prefer living on a cul-de-sac.”

Brad called me the next day. “Dick, I found the ideal place for you. Looks like it’s not up for sale quite yet, but you can still make an offer…. Wait a second, this is your address. This is where you live now!”

“Great job, Brad,” I said. “You are the best. You found the perfect house for me.” ■

We’re the old people now W

By Joyce Eisenberg & Ellen Scolnic hen we moved from the city to the suburbs many years ago, our children were toddlers and we were young. Our neighbors were the old people— empty nesters, retirees, grandparents—who had lived in the same home for more than 25 years.

Imagine that!

Fast-forward a few decades. We’re still at the same addresses. Our neighborhoods have “turned over” and there are other mothers and kids waiting for the school bus at our corner. We’re the old people now.

We were outside one day when our neighbors strolled by with their brand-new baby. We waved them over to cluck at their 8-week-old daughter. We wanted to stroke the baby’s cheek and admire her adorable sweater and blanket. We couldn’t resist telling the parents that when we bought our strollers in 1987 they cost $99 and didn’t come with GPS, seating for three and ultra-padded dashboards.

We’re the old people now.

When we go into the city and try one of the trendy new restaurants, we look around and see that we’re the only ones without tattoos and strategically ripped jeans. Maybe our contemporaries were there at 5:30 p.m. for the Early Bird Special.

The other diners are

young enough to be our kids. We reminisce about the days when restaurants were quieter and brightly lit, and the print on the menu seemed bigger. We’re the old people now.

When we look at the brochure to choose excursions for an upcoming trip, we have to check out the activity levels. We’re not up for the “ultimate challenge.” We don’t want to ice climb or parasail into a volcano.

The next level down, “strenuous,” involves three to six hours a day of hiking on mountainous terrain.

We’ll stick with “moderate activity.”

We can ride a camel or hike a mile or two. We don’t want to do any activity that would require us to get a doctor’s note. We’d much rather shop for souvenirs, take the native food tour and visit the spa. We’re the old people now.

We used to listen to records. Then there were tapes and CDs. Remember the Walkman? Boomboxes?

We’re much more advanced than that now. We listen to music on our phones—even in our car! We can pull up our favorite songs any time we want. We know how to use Bluetooth to play music in our kitchens, but then the kids laugh at us because we don’t use Spotify.

We listen to the same old favorites over and over again. How do we find out about the latest releases?

Who are Frenship and Rob $tone? We’re the old people now.

Maybe that’s why we like joining the 10 a.m. senior stretch exercise class at the local gym, attending the lunch-and-learn at the senior center and lounging by the pool in the gated golf community in Florida. It makes us feel young. ■
