hen you hear the word “date” what do you think? Is it a teenager hitting the town with a young love? Is it dinner and a movie with someone you’re attracted to?

Or is it simply spending time with someone and enjoying their company and companionship?

Hilltop’s Senior Living Communities and the BEACON believe that love knows no age, which is why the two organizations are partnering to present seniors with the opportunity to make friends, and maybe even find love.

The first Senior Speed Dating event for those 70 and better will be held on Friday, August 9, at 6:30 p.m. at The Commons of Hilltop, 625 27 1/2 Road, Grand Junction.

The atmosphere will be casual and informal. Participants will be given a match sheet and will have 5-7 minutes to sit with each person of the opposite sex to strike up a conversation and see if there is a spark.

“People often feel isolated and alone if they don’t have someone to share life’s everyday thoughts and happenings with,” said Cathy Story, Senior Director of Hilltop’s Senior Life. “We often see people struggle with loneliness and depression in their later years and know there are huge health benefits to having ca-

maraderie and true companionship with another person.”

Not really looking for love? This is a great event for those who seek companionship and want to meet new people in a casual and stressfree environment.

“The great thing about doing an event like this is the added safety component,” said Story. “Only the participants that have both said they are interested in talking to the other person again will be given contact information after the event.”

You must preregister. The cost to register is $20 per person and includes a small selection of beer and wine, and delicious appetizers from The Kitchens of Hilltop.

“Connecting with others gives us a deeper purpose to life and we hope to help seniors in our community find those relationship,” Story said. ■

Woodstock helped hippies live longer, science says “S cience says concerts can help you live

longer.”

This was the headline of an article that Kevin, our publisher, forwarded to me recently.

“If that’s the case, you’re going to live forever,” he said, referring to the fact that I’ve seen more than 250 bands live.

The article cites a study that found that seeing live music regularly can play a significant role in boosting one’s self-esteem, closeness to others and mental stimulation, thereby increasing life expectancy by almost a decade.

Compared to other happiness-promoting activities they studied, such as yoga and dog walking, going to concerts was a clear winner, reportedly increasing participants’ happiness by 21 percent.

That explains why, 50 years ago, some 500,000 music fans gathered at Woodstock to listen to some of rock ‘n’ roll’s top artists of the day. Not only was the music euphoric, but this historic event also gave them respite from the political and socioeconomic turmoil the country was going through at the time.

Sure, the drugs probably helped with that, too, but even with that kind of crowd, there were only two fatalities, and neither was a result of violence.

As far as I’m con-

cerned, the study’s findings are well supported: Music is good for the soul, and live music takes it to the next level. What better excuse to check out some live music around town? We have some suggestions.

Putting out the welcome mat: Airbnb Superhosts make money, friendships by opening their homes to guests

W

hen Pat Martin listed her spare room on Airbnb seven years ago, it was one of only three in the area. Now there are 300, an example of the online hospitality service’s increasing popularity.

The extra bed in her Fruitvale home rents for a modest $45 per night year-round and comes with a gourmet breakfast she cooks herself. Recognized on Airbnb by the name, “Southwest Ambiance and Comfort,” Martin’s home showcases her southwestern-style hospitality, which she describes in a way that attracts guests to book with her for roughly 150 nights out of the year.

“Staying with [me] is like staying with a favorite relative—a relative who has been a ranch hand, trail rider, cowboy poet and author, and who lives the Western lifestyle,” her listing reads.

Although Pat Martin signed up with Airbnb out of financial necessity, she loves the fact that she's made so many friendships.

“I always give my guests a hug when they leave. No matter how old they are, I tell them they’re all my kids now,” said Martin. “It used to be all millennials, but now seniors are getting onboard, too.”

Airbnb is a burgeoning marketplace of lodging experiences designed for travelers of all ages.

Not only has it opened up new ways to travel, but it’s also become an important earning opportunity for seniors looking to stretch their savings into retirement.

According to AARP, the majority of Americans over age 60 want to age in place by remaining in their current home. A global survey of Airbnb hosts found that close to half of those aged 60 and older say that the bed and breakfast service has helped them afford to stay in their homes, and 41 percent say they rely on their Airbnb income to make ends meet.

In 2013, Anna and Jim Goetz put a second mortgage on their home and bought an investment property near Fort Lauderdale, which their son, Michael, rents from them.

Three years later, while looking for ways to stretch their income, Anna suggested posting the property on Airbnb.com.

“I thought, how cool would it be to Airbnb the Florida property when Michael comes home for

With their son’s approval, the listing went live and someone reserved the property for all five days. Michael had just enough time to put away his underwear, lock his important documents in the garage and fly home.

“We made $800, and that was the beginning of this huge process,” said Anna.

Reservations have poured in since that first day, with guests leaving rave reviews. Now when guests arrive, Michael moves into a remodeled shed in the backyard.

COVER STORY After witnessing the success of renting out their Florida property, Anna was ready to explore the possibility of listing their home in Grand Junction. Her husband, Jim, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic about renting their home to strangers.

“I didn’t want a bunch of weirdos in my house going through my stuff, sitting on my swing or in my hot tub,” Jim said. “Then I began to realize that this place brings me so much joy—why not share some of that joy with others?”

College graduations, fairs, festivals, foreign and business travelers, wedding parties and bikers keep them hopping between residences.

They stayed with local family members before buying a small camper to retreat to while their house was occupied. Last year, they invested in a 725-square foot home in the Las Colonias area for a more comfortable respite. Remodeled and cute as a button, this small house also has the potential to become an Airbnb in the future.

“Our situation may be unique because we live in the home we rent out, where other people use a second home where they don’t have to move or juggle every guest,” said Jim. “But we have it figured out: I have a box that I throw my stuff in and just go.”

Any available space can work as an Airbnb, from a shared living room to a second home and everything in between. Guests like to have the option of having entire houses to themselves, private rooms with a separate entrance or shared common spaces, or even a couch in a shared room.

SUPERHOST STATUS Many travelers are shying away from traditional accommodations

and turning to Airbnb as they look for lodging that provides greater access to unique sights, experiences and communities.

Both Martin and the Goetzes are Superhosts, meaning that 90 percent of their guests have given them five-star reviews. This is actually a common trend for senior hosts: 85 percent of senior hosts’ reviews are five stars.

“We are proud to maintain the Airbnb Superhost status,” said Anna, whose Grand Junction home is centrally located and complete with a hot tub and fire pit. “People leave our home so nice, as they want us to give them a five-star rating themselves.”

Martin has hosted guests from 57 countries. Some of the Goetzes’ past guests include two young bubbly Google photographers, a man who taught them how to make a yoga meditation chair, and a young Chinese couple on their honeymoon who cooked Anna a fabulous breakfast.

“We’ve met interesting and wonderful people from all over the world,” said Anna. “Each person leaves a little piece of themselves with us.”

Renting out their house via Airbnb is a part-time business for Anna, who manages the cleaning, reservations, website, finances and taxes. Jim, still a full-time teacher, acts as a handyman and helper during quick turnaround times.

Airbnb gives hosts the flexibility to block off dates when they don’t want to rent or to increase prices for peak times. All money is exchanged through the website or smartphone app, and the company has taken extensive measures to keep hosts, their homes and guests safe.

Martin has no apprehensions about who she rents to because guests are so well-vetted, and guests are rated by previous hosts.

Airbnb has made a profound impact on both Martin and the

Goetzes’ financial futures. The most exciting news for the Goetzes is that by continuing to share their home, Jim will be able to retire five years earlier than originally planned.

“It may sound silly but Airbnb has brought luxury to my life,” said Anna. “Guests require things we never had before: nice linens, new mattresses, Kleenex and paper towels. Another luxury is always having a cleaner house!”

Jim added that expenses such as internet, utilities and even coffee can be prorated or written off.

Being out of their house while it's occupied by guests has also allowed them to enjoy some amazing camping and travel adventures they wouldn’t have otherwise taken.

“I have no regrets about doing this,” said Jim. “It’s about the most positive thing I’ve ever done.” ■

Outsmarting Abby

The mystery of animal intuition I

t’s three hours before our dinner guests arrive and Abby barks non-stop in anticipation. We hadn’t told our 9-year-old Papillon that company was coming. As official over-the-top greeter of our household, she figured it out on her own.

My husband, Dan, and I are baffled at how she knows, but she knows.

Does the activity of setting the table in the dining room, which we use only for special occasions, spell “visitors” and put this social pup into excitement overdrive? Could it be the way we both take showers and change clothes that signals something is about to happen? Is it because we turned on the porch

lights or that we’re both busy in the kitchen?

Whatever the reason, she is always right and rewarded with praise and attention when our guests finally arrive while we are stressed from hours of unrelenting barking.

I decided it was time to turn the tables and outsmart Abby.

I set the dining room table when she was outside. Dan and I staggered our showers and change of attire. We took turns in the kitchen so there was only one of us in there at a time. No outside lights were turned on until just before our guests were to arrive.

We were able to knock off two hours of barking, but her unexplain-

able intuition kicked in at near the 60-minute countdown. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t outsmart her.

I’ve always loved books about animals, their intelligence, and the marvelous ways they impact our lives. When I came across “Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home and Other Unexplained Powers of Animals” by Rupert Sheldrake, I was intrigued.

How homing pigeons released far and wide find their way back home is still a mystery today. Cats have predicted earthquakes and dogs sit by the door within minutes of their owner arriving, even when they work irregular days and times and use different vehicles.

Years ago, Dan moved to a new home three miles away from his previous one. The only time his Schnauzer, Sage, had been to the new home was via the moving day shuttle. Shortly thereafter, she went missing after digging under the fence. He drove to the old

We’ve nicknamed Abby “Velcro” when the backpack and hiking shoes come out because she knows this means an adventure that most likely includes her. When suitcases are packed, she sulks and sticks close to us, begging us not to leave.

When either of us arrives to an empty house, we are met by a super happy tail-wagging but silent dog. If one of us is already home, the other can hear the barking before pulling into our driveway as Abby alerts the other person that her family is now complete.

Only dog lovers appreciate it when I say Abby is not just a dog; she’s also a little person. While reading a book in our backyard one day, I noticed her chasing a tiny mouse across the grass. She caught it and proudly stood guard over her prize while she stared at me. After some time, she left her post, went into the house through her doggie door, and retrieved Dan, luring him over to her trophy for a look-see.

He praised her and she merrily trotted off. Mission accomplished.

by John Grogan, Marley was a destructive, rambunctious yellow lab, who went into a spontaneous calm, comfort mode when his wife had a miscarriage.

“Making Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat” by David Dosa recounts stories of Oscar, the resident cat at a Providence, Rhode Island nursing home. Staff noticed he was able to predict when someone was nearing the end of their life, communicating with them by lying on the person’s bed. Family was notified and given time to say their final goodbyes.

Pets have even been known to react when their owner is in distress or dying in a distant place.

News sources tell remarkable stories of pets who make the journey back to their owners after they’re lost hundreds or thousands of miles from home.

Call it telepathy, empathy, premonitions or simply an intuition that can’t be explained. We’ll leave the animal mysteries to the scientists, but for us animal lovers, it’s our special bonds that make them extraordinary. ■

Meat patties: 5 lbs. ground beef 1 tsp white pepper 1 tsp sea salt 1 tsp fresh thyme 1/2 tsp fresh chopped garlic 1/2 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp BBQ seasoning

Homemade ketchup: 1 medium onion 2 garlic cloves, whole 1/8 tsp ground all spice 1 28 oz. can whole tomatoes 6 whole roma tomatoes, peeled 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

Mix above ingredients and form 4-ounce patties.

Place romas in boiling water for 3 minutes, pull from water and peel off the skin. Cut them in half and shake out the seeds. Put the romas and remaining ingredients in a pot and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until reduced by half.

Place in container and allow to cool overnight.

Bacon jam: 1 lb. bacon Brown sugar, black pepper and chili powder seasonings 1 quart apple cider vinegar 3 cups balsamic vinegar 3cups brown sugar 1/2 tsp white pepper 1/2 cup diced yellow onion 1/2 tsp Herbs De Provence 2 cups water 1 cup cornstarch Season bacon with brown sugar, pepper and chili powder. Cook until firm, about 15 minutes.

Once cooled, dice into thin strips and set aside.

Mix water, vinegar, pepper, onion, brown sugar and herbs in pot and bring to a boil. Add the bacon and simmer for 20 minutes. Add 2 cups of hot water and bring to a boil. Slowly add the cornstarch until the jam begins to thicken. Simmer for about 3 minutes.

Remove jam from pot into another container. Allow to cool overnight.

Grilled vegetables: • 2 pounds of the following: zucchini, yellow squash, Portobello mushrooms, cut into any fashion you choose.

• 4 cups sherry vinegar • 4 cups balsamic • 18th cup of the following herbs finely diced • Basil, rosemary, chocolate mint, parsley, two cloves garlic, sea salt and black pepper.

Mix all ingredients and add the vegetables to the mixture. Allow to marinate for at least 6 hours.

Prepare grilled burgers with burger jam, homemade ketchup and slices of Gouda cheese and chiffonade cut lettuce, thin cut on the bias with a side of grilled vegetables. ■

He told her she did not have to, and she could choose hospice instead. He said she was so relieved to know that she could die in peace and comfort without being in a hospital. OB Dear Old Bag: I have met a very nice man on a dating site. We have been involved for a few months now, and he just recently started talking about marriage. The problem is that he lives about 120 miles away. We each have a home and family in our respective cities. He has said several times, “When you come to live with me…” but the fact is, I have no intention of moving anywhere. I love my home and being near my family. But I am afraid that if I tell him, I will lose him. Help! Signed, BB Dear BB: I understand why people do not want to move in their later years, but that is why certain things should be brought up early in a relationship. You need to put your cards on the table now! Your man may be willing to move, but you won't know until you fess up. A word of advice to my readers who are looking for love on dating sites: Only date people in your city unless you are willing to move, or let it be known that you are not flexible about moving. I had one reader who met a woman who was willing to move, but she did not want to live in the house where he had lived with his wife of 50 years. I advised them to sell their homes and move into an independent retirement community, which they did and it worked out well for them. Another couple moved in together, but found they were not good roommates, so she kept her house down the block and they visited each other. There are many different arrangements in second marriages. 12 tried and true weight loss tips W hen someone asks what the best diet is for losing weight, what he or she is really saying is, “I’m overweight. What’s an easy fix?”

There are no shortcuts that work as consistently and are as good for your health as good old-fashioned diet and exercise. It’s this simple: The best diet for losing weight gives you fewer calories than you burn.

Federal guidelines say that men and active women need about 2,500 calories daily. Other women and inactive men need only about 2,000 calories daily. It is recommended that you consume 300-500 fewer calories to lose 1-2 pounds a week.

Exercise is important to weight loss because it burns calories. You should take frequent walks or exercise vigorously for a half-hour most days. Typically, it’s more difficult to lose weight as you get older

because metabolism—the process that converts food into energy—is slowed by aging. Another reason is that muscle burns up more calories than fat does. As you get older, muscle decreases and fat constitutes more of your weight.

In other words, seniors get a double whammy that leads to weight gain.

Consult your doctor before starting a diet/exercise program.

Find out how much fat you have to lose by looking at the body mass index (BMI), a measure of fat that is based upon height and weight.

To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in pounds by height in

inches squared. Then multiply by 703.

A BMI between 19 and 25 is normal. Overweight is 25 to 29.9.

Obese means 30 or higher.

If you are really serious about losing weight, take my advice: 1. Keep track of the food you eat to prevent overeating.

2. Don’t cut back too much because your body will begin conserving energy, making it difficult to reduce.

3. Begin exercises to develop muscle so your body will burn more calories.

4. Avoid fads. Eat a balanced diet or you may deny yourself import-

ant nutrients.

5. Losing weight is difficult so don’t be tempted by reduction plans that make it sound easy.

6. If it tastes heavenly, avoid it as much as possible.

7. Drink water. It has no calories and will help you with your hunger.

8. Eat because you’re hungry, not because you’re bored.

9. Eat slowly and savor your food so you don’t feel deprived later.

10. Don’t skip meals or you will become ravenous and overeat.

11. Avoid alcoholic drinks. They are loaded with non-filling calories.

12. Going for seconds? Think again. ■

Eggs could reduce the risk of stroke

F

or years, folks have been afraid of eggs, and how they are filled with “bad” cholesterol LDL (low-density lipoproteins). Long gone are the days where people drank them raw like Sylvester Stallone did in “Rocky”…and no, I don’t recommend you do that!

Just so you know, the practice of eating raw eggs is about 120 years old. Today, some bodybuilders use liquid egg whites as an alternative to avoid salmonella contamination.

This month I’m focusing on whether eggs raise the risk of heart disease or stroke. The rationale is that eggs are high in cholesterol, and hypercholesterolemia increases stroke. So let’s explore that and see what the research claims.

One hard-boiled egg contains 187 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol. One scrambled egg has about 169 mg of natural cholesterol. Data accumulated from epidemiological studies suggest an inverse relationship—the more eggs you eat, the higher you’re at risk for stroke. However, evidence of this relationship is limited and has not deterred me from eating them.

Millions of people, however, are still running scared from the egg.

But there’s some great news for egg lovers! Brand new research, published in the May 16, 2019 issue of the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition,” tells of a study to determine the association of eggs (and cholesterol intake) with the risk of stroke. It was conducted in 1,950 middle-aged men from Finland. The study found that neither egg consumption nor cholesterol intake was associated with stroke incidence. This included accounting for the gene that influences cholesterol metabolism (ApoE4).

Furthermore, a meta-analysis published in 2016, in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition” revealed that eggs might actually lower the risk of stroke.

“Based on the results of this meta-analysis, consumption of up to one egg daily may contribute to a decreased risk of total stroke, and daily egg intake does not appear to be associated with risk of CHD (coronary heart disease).”

What’s so important here, and the message I want to leave you with, is to stop worrying so much about food. There is so much mental chatter going on in the heads of Americans that says, “Eat this and not that.

This here is bad for you. Bread might kill you. There’s caffeine in this, gluten in that, lactose in this and sugar in that!”

Just enjoy real food, eat wisely, avoid all chemicals and refined foods, and unless you are vegan, go ahead and eat the eggs! ■

Colorado becomes first state to put cap on rising insulin prices The price of insulin, which has nearly doubled from 2012 to 2016, has prompted public outrage and lawmaker scrutiny. A bill to cap the cost of insulin was signed into law in May 2019 by Gov. Jared Polis, making Colorado the first state to put a cap on rising insulin prices.

However, the law doesn’t go into effect until January 2020.

While drug makers and some prescription plans are starting to offer patients bigger discounts, we’re still seeing the terrible impact of rising insulin prices on patients: people being forced to taper off or skip doses of insulin so they can pay their medical bills and winding up with kidney failure, blindness, or even death.

AFib makes the heart beat rapidly and irregularly. It commonly feels like a fluttering of the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, “During atrial fibrillation, the heart's two upper chambers (the atria) beat chaotically and irregularly—out of coordination with the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart.”

AFib, also known as arrhythmia, is not deadly in and of itself, but is nonetheless a serious condition. It increases the risk of heart failure or can be the result of a serious underlying health problem.

AFib can be genetic or may be caused by one of several heart-related diseases, previous heart surgery, sleep apnea, lung disease, infection, or an overactive thyroid.

Caffeine, heavy alcohol use, street drugs, and certain medications can also cause AFib.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS, AND HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? The most common symptom of AFib is a fluttering heartbeat or palpitations. Other symptoms also sometimes accompany the condition, such as fatigue, dizziness, thumping in the chest, anxiety, shortness of breath, feeling faint or confused, sweating, chest pain or pressure.

pain or pressure. It could indicate a heart attack.

If you do experience symptoms, diagnosis is painless and relatively simple. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and an electrocardiogram. A patient-activated cardiac event recorder can also help with the diagnosis.

TYPES OF AFIB AND TREATMENT There are four types of AFib, although one form can progress into another.

Paroxysmal AFib is intermittent and can last for just a few seconds or up to a week. Symptoms may range from none to severe. Either way, this form of AFib goes away on its own within a week or less.

Persistent AFib doesn't go away on its own. It lasts until it's treated with either medication or electric shock. For those at high risk of stroke or if there's another known cause of the AFib, physicians will treat the source of the irregular heartbeat as well.

Longstanding persistent AFib doesn't respond to the above treatments. Several forms of minimally invasive catheter ablation are usually considered. For this procedure, you'll be given something to relax you and a local anesthetic to numb the groin or neck area where the catheter will be inserted.

Finally, permanent AFib occurs when longstanding persistent AFib is unresponsive to treatment. If treatment has been ineffective, your doctor might decide to discontinue the treatment. This form of AFib is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and can also impact the quality of your life.

So whatever the form of AFib, take the condition seriously. If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention without delay. ■

I fit in the latter category. It wasn’t until I retired that I had the time to explore my passion for writing. It’s not about the money, but the privilege of meeting many wonderful Grand Valley seniors and being able to share their stories.

Jim Faulhaber retired from juggling civil engineering design projects in 2006, sold his home in Denver and hit the road. He was a campground host for two seasons at Rocky Mountain National Park, and for six seasons at Highline State Park. He didn’t receive a paycheck, but his campsite was free.

Since retiring as a teacher and principal, Anna Goetz works parttime as an educational consultant and now does academic coaching with Essentials in Learning. She and husband, Jim, turned both their Grand Junction and Florida homes into Airbnbs three years ago, loving the income as well as the people.

Some of my other friends do house or pet sitting, handyman jobs and part-time home health care or house cleaning. Interesting seasonal positions are available with the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, City and County as well as local wineries, orchards and greenhouses. While most seasonal positions are during the summer, Enstroms and other retailers beef up their staff during the holiday rush.

Besides writing, retirement has allowed me to spend more time on another “job” I thoroughly love.

I consider myself such a savvy shopper that I often feel guilty for how little I pay for what I walk away with. It may not be a paycheck, but the savings each year are worth hundreds of dollars. Consignment shops are a great way to purge your home furnishings and clothing while reaping financial rewards.

Fun and flexible post-retirement work options are plentiful and still leave plenty of time for family, friends, exercise and volunteering. ■

Senior Day at the Fair!

S enior Day at the Fair was a great success. Hundreds of seniors turned out in 100-degree heat for their chance to win $1,000 playing BEACON Bingo, which was called by the Grand Junction Senior Recreation Center and sponsored by The Lodge at Grand Junction and SummitWest Care. Many walked away winners, including two lucky players who each won $240.

Pinnacle Hearing Center sponsored arts and crafts projects and participants were serenaded by several local music acts. Some came to the fair by bus, while others brought their grandkids and took photos with their rock art.

The flight attendant watches her do this and asks to see her ticket.

The blonde replies, "I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, I'm going to Toronto and I'm staying right here."

The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the copilot of the situation.

The copilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy she will have to leave and return to her seat.

The blonde replies, "I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here."

The copilot tells the pilot that he should probably have the police waiting when they land.

The pilot says, "You say she is a blonde? I’ll handle this; I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde."

He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says,

"Oh, I’m sorry."

She gets up and goes back to her seat in economy.

The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

"I told her, 'First class isn't going to Toronto.’"

Submitted by May Davidson A man owned a small farm in Colorado. The Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent to interview him.

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent.

"Well, there's my hired hand who's been with me for three years.

I pay him $600 a week, plus free

room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a month, plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit that works about 18 hours a day.

He makes $10 a week and I buy him chewing tobacco," replied the farmer.

"That's the guy I want to talk to—the half-wit," the agent said.

The farmer replied, "That would be me."

Submitted by Barry Wetzel A cowboy was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in California when a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust. The driver, a young man dressed in a designer suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and a YSL tie leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd will you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looked at the man then looked at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answered, "Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his iPad, connected it to his cell phone, and surfed to a NASA page on the Internet, where he called up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location, which he then fed to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opened the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exported it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Within seconds, the yuppie received an email on his iPhone. He

then accessed a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Maybe this month you’re beginning to enjoy the overflowing abundance that gardens provide. Or, if you’re at a slightly higher elevation, maybe your crops are just starting to realize it’s summer.

Either way, here are a few ways to enjoy the abundance that summer has to offer.

CHOOSING ABUNDANCE This time of year, nothing beats locally grown produce like a crunchy sweet pepper, a quality heirloom tomato, or a tree-ripened Palisade peach.

Locally grown produce is harvested at the peak of its growing season, which makes it both tastier and healthier than what you’ll find in grocery stores.

Fresh, local and in season: These are three ingredients for great eating and whole body-mind wellness. Fresh, locally grown seasonal produce makes superior food

medicine. Here’s how to make the most of it.

• Support local growers by visiting farmers' markets. Talk to different vendors to learn about how they’re growing their food and what makes them special.

Some casual digging might lead you to discover someone who’s putting your values into practice.

• Reap (and share) your bounty!

For us gardeners, mid-summer is an exciting time! We get to reap the fruits of our labor, brag to our friends about all we’ve grown, swap stories and produce with other garden dwellers, and share bountiful harvests with our loved ones.

• Preserve the harvest to enjoy all year long.

PRESERVING ABUNDANCE For me, taste and nutrition are reason enough to preserve local produce while it’s in season. Caring for our planet and supporting the local economy are also huge factors, each helping to create and preserve an abundant world for all people.

But there’s another reason (among many more) to participate in the abundance of our local growing season: money in our pockets.

It’s cost effective to buy fruits and vegetables while they’re in season. An abundant supply of produce, combined with the fact that food doesn’t have to travel as far to get to consumers, often makes for lower priced, higher quality goods.

When you’re preserving, you can even ask farmers for discounted “seconds”—fruits with minor imperfections. Use this opportunity to buy an abundance of fresh, local, seasonal produce, which once preserved, can last through the winter!

• Drying and dehydrating: Drying herbs, fruits and vegetables is easy and effective. Air dry tender herbs by bundling and hanging

them upside down in a cool, dark place with a bit of airflow. You can also spread a thin layer of herbs, edible flowers or chili peppers in a basket and lay a cheesecloth over top to keep dust away.

Slice fruits and veggies, and dry in a dehydrator. Once the moisture is gone, you can store dried produce in jars to use in soups and other cooked dishes through the seasons.

• Canning: While the process varies for different items, you only need a few tools and a recipe to get started. This is one of the more time-consuming preservation techniques, so choose wisely.

I like to save my canning efforts for tomatoes and peaches. I blend all my tomatoes into a sauce, and roast peach halves in the oven for winter pies.

• Fermentation: Let food and liquid sit in a jar on the counter, and wait. Fermentation is a natural process that food undergoes in certain conditions, and our ancestors have been doing it for a long time. There are many different types of fermentation, leading to fantastic eats like kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, wines and spirits. Plus, fermented products are full of probiotics that benefit your gut. Follow the recipe and

you’ll find it’s not as daunting as it sounds.

• Pickling: Vinegar is a natural preservative used to pickle peppers, cucumbers and more. I love dicing peppers and pickling them with garlic, salt and herbs to use on sandwiches year-round.

• Share the love. Whether it’s with neighbors, friends, family, or community members who are struggling, giving home-grown produce is deeply rewarding.

Canal ESCAPE Panama Only one of many treasures

promised myself I wouldn’t stare.

As part of the Caravan tour to Panama, we were scheduled to visit the Embera tribe, a group of indigenous peoples where the women are naked from the waist up. I’m not sure whether I was disappointed or relieved to find them fully clothed– clearly dressed up for the tourists.

The small tribe of about 33 residents lives 10 hours away from the major reservation and is only accessible by boat. The founder of this village had helped train U.S. astronauts in survival techniques in the 1960s. Today the tribe shares its traditions and handicrafts with tour groups.

This was just one of many memorable moments from my trip to Panama. Even though the canal is the indisputable highlight of the trip, the tour included so much more. For such a small country, there was a lot to explore.

The new inter-oceanic waterway changed the world: continents were connected, cultures intermingled, the Pacific and Atlantic oceans became accessible and international transportation and globalization blossomed.

You would need an engineering degree to understand the complexities of the canal operations.

Suffice it is to say, there are locks that raise or lower the ships so they can connect from one ocean to the other. It’s mesmerizing to watch from afar and even more so from the deck of an actual ship going through the process.

Miraflores, one of the main locks, contains an extensive, exceedingly well-done museum that explains in excruciating detail the whole history and intricacies of the canal. You could spend an entire day there exploring the four floors and remain endlessly enthralled.

LOCKS AHOY! Watching the ships go through the locks is a hypnotic triumph of technology that is hard to conceptualize. And then we went through the locks ourselves. We started on the Atlantic side at 87 feet above sea level. After going through three locks lowering us about 30 feet at each stop, we approached sea level and entered into the Pacific Ocean.

The first time I saw the lock open ahead of me I felt like a part of history. Watching the water

We rode a small boat circling the Gatun Lake viewing the ships awaiting passage and the locks themselves from a different perspective. Oh, yes, and there were also crocodiles, birds and monkeys to be seen.

“Stay calm if a Capuchin monkey should jump on the boat,” the captain told us repeatedly.

No one stayed calm, but none of us would have traded the experience of watching these playful primates vying over the bananas thrown on the deck. The cacophony of camera clicks formed a symphony of its own.

Then there’s Panama’s skyline— an unexpected visual wonder. It’s filled with skyscrapers of so many shapes, sizes and colors that they are more reminiscent of sculptures than buildings. The buildings were architectural art revealing creativity, inventiveness and ingenuity— adjectives not usually associated with business offices and condos.

The strain in my neck from looking skyward was worth the series of impressive edifices.

ing A&M Records with his friend Jerry Moss. The record company had humble beginnings, starting with just a $200 investment and based out of Alpert’s garage.

Now it’s considered to be the most successful independent label in history, selling for half a billion dollars in 1989 to Polygram records.

Before starting A&M, Alpert began his musical career writing songs with his friend Lou Adler.

They penned Sam Cooke’s big hit, “Wonderful World.” Cooke taught Alpert to listen for the feeling in the music.

Alpert remembered finding that feeling when he was at a bullfight in Tijuana, Mexico. He felt the excitement in the crowd that was stirred by the fanfare of the mariachi brass band. When he got home, he wanted to capture that energy and sound. He experimented with layering his trumpet recordings in his garage studio until he got it just right.

The resulting song, “The Lonely Bull,” took off like a rocket and The Tijuana Brass was born.

This was just the beginning.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass sold over 72 million records with five number one hits, 15 gold records and 14 platinum albums.

A & M Records went on to record artists like Quincy Jones, Liza Minnelli, Janet Jackson, Cat Stevens, The Carpenters, Police, Sting and Sérgio Mendes and Brasil ’66.

SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS Success wasn’t the only thing

Alpert found through music.

Alpert first met Lani Hall when Sérgio Mendes and Brasil ’66 showed up at A&M Records. Brasil ’66 later became the opening act for The Tijuana Brass.

Surrounded by great music, Hall and Alpert found their way into each other's hearts. The couple married, and recently celebrated 45 years together.

Alpert is the only recording artist in history to have a number one hit as a singer and as an instrumentalist. He bumped Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” out of the number one spot with his rendition of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “This Guy’s In Love With You” in 1968.

Alpert’s achievements include nine Grammy Awards. In 2017, Alpert was nominated for another Grammy. Billboard listed Alpert as no. 7 on their Greatest Of All Time Billboard 200 Artists.

In 2006, Alpert and Moss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Former president Barack Obama awarded the National Medal of Honor for the Arts to Alpert in 2013.

Alpert has found himself in the right place at the right time so often, he feels inspired to put more creativity, art and positivity out into the world.

Alpert and Hall founded the Herb Alpert Foundation in the late 1980s, and have contributed tens of millions of dollars to the arts and education. Alpert believes it’s important for kids to experience creative expression at an early age.

ou’re never too old to rock and roll.”

Earl Halladay, 68, and the other members of local band Loose Cannon practice what they preach.

Though they’re all into their golden years, instead of sitting in rocking chairs, they rock the Grand Valley on stage with golden oldies.

“We’re the only rock and roll group composed of people our age,” said guitarist Andy Brinkley, 65.

The band’s members bring together their diverse life experiences and musical backgrounds to create music they’re proud of.

“We can relate to each other, and they play my songs!” Brinkley said, referring to pieces he has written.

He and Halladay are the songwriters. Brinkley has been a career musician since 1968, playing lead and rhythm guitar as well as bass and occasional stints at the keyboard. After attending high school in northern Louisiana, he started playing in nightclub bands. He got

in his first band in 1968 and hit the road in 1973, playing in 35 states and Canada.

Brinkley penned “Back to Louisiana” and Halladay wrote “Didn’t See It Coming,” a piece inspired by a woman whom he dated.

“She dumped me to go back to a man who beat her,” Halladay explained.

Both those songs, plus eight more originals will be on the band’s first album to be completed by the first of next year.

A COMPANY OF TALENT Halladay, the band’s founder, was born with music in his blood. His parents met on stage, where his mother played drums and his father was a vocalist. His older brother, James, inspired him to play the guitar and sing. At 27, he started performing professionally with the band PALLEDEN, touring the Great Lakes region.

Three years later, he moved to Colorado and founded the band Close to the Border. Halladay

BEACON SENIOR NEWS toured for 18 years, then did a oneeighty—switching from playing music to operating heavy equipment.

He retired in 2015 and started Loose Cannon in 2018.

Why the name Loose Cannon?

“Because sometimes the members are loose cannons,” Halladay said. “They do the unexpected.”

Bassist Christopher Krabacher, 66, expanded on that thought.

“We play what we love but we stretch it out and make it our own,” he said.

“Any genre, any time” seems to be Krabacher’s motto. Playing music since age 4, he plays anything that has strings: fiddle/violin, bass, sitar and mandolin for starters.

Over time, he waltzed through classical pieces, jazzed up his music with ragtime, bebop and anything in between, fiddled around with bluegrass and threw reggae, pop, folk, blues and rock into the mix in the course of his 58-year-long musical journey.

Krabacher’s favorite thing about Loose Cannon is the release that music provides from the “drudgery” of his day job as an architect.

“Our personalities meld, and we all give 100 percent,” Krabacher said regarding his fellow band members.

Drummer Pat Olson, 70, agreed.

“I love these guys. We all like the same music, and playing with them

is the most fun I’ve had in a long time,” he said.

Olson, the “old guy” at 70, is a semi-retired artist with several works around town, including the statues of Chief Ouray and Chipeta in the Grand Junction City Hall.

Drumming became his passion 60 years ago, and he also plays the piano. He started playing in his native town of Appleton, Minnesota and continued to play folk, rock, country, jazz, and classical music after moving to Colorado.

While at Colorado State University, Olson joined a band called The Dean Davis Company. The group flew the West Coast director of the USO to see one of their concerts and was selected to go on tour. The band performed in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand, as well as some Pacific island bases and Australia. Venues included a wide variety of U.S. military installations, from small hospital wards to large auditoriums to fire support bases.

“We weren’t on the level of Bob Hope, but did receive the highest rating given to groups other than the Hope tours,” Olson said.

arol Backman raised her children with little outside help.

She didn’t have a place to go to laugh, cry or seek advice from other mothers going through the same joys and struggles. She didn’t have a place where loving volunteers could watch her children for a few hours—for free—giving her a chance to form a social network outside the home.

She wishes she had.

Now Backman, 69, volunteers twice a month for the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) Kids program at Canyon View Vineyard Church (CVVC). MOPS is an international organization that partners with churches and organizations around the world to support and encourage mothers with children ranging in age from unborn to kindergarten.

A vital aspect of MOPS is its childcare program, known as MOPS Kids. This is where individuals like Backman are valuable. CVVC MOPS Kids’ membership has grown and they need more adult volunteers to watch and teach children from as young as 9 months to as old as 6 years. Rooms are divided by age, and volunteers serve kids from approximately 9-11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month during the school year.

A typical MOPS Kids year starts in August and lasts through mid-May. Even though it’s a volunteer position, Backman finds it beyond rewarding.

“Moms thank me every time they pick up their kids and say how much they appreciate (me) giving my time,” Backman said. “We live in a very hectic world. Giving moms a break can lift their spirits. They can relax for two hours without worrying about their kids."

MOPS Kids volunteers do not need to attend church. All that’s

required is their time, patience and heart, explained Morgan Barb, MOPS Kids coordinator.

Snacks, crafts and Christian-based lessons are provided and catered to each age. All adult volunteers are subject to a background check.

A committee of volunteers helps oversee the rooms. All mothers with children enrolled in MOPS Kids stay at the church during the MOPS meetings in case an issue arises.

“For only 2 1/2 hours (a meeting) you’re changing the lives of kids and moms on a regular basis,” Barb said. “These short bursts might not seem like much, but it’s giving so much back to the community.

Isolation hurts our society—from childhood to adulthood and into senior years. This organization is meant to get children and moms out of the house and into a safe, loving environment for support and socialization. None of it is possible without volunteers.”

Not all volunteers need to help out two weeks a month or be retired. Carrie Frazier, 56, takes several hours off work one Wednesday morning a month without hesitation.

“I want moms to have that opportunity to be together and to know they’re not alone in this world,” she said.

While moms listen to speakers, devotionals, eat brunch, do crafts and unwind, their children get to learn and grow in MOPS Kids.

“Those kids have so much life in them and so much curiosity,” Frazier said. “You get to see how their little brains work.”

8 things to know before replacing your computer

ack-to-School season is typically the best time to get the best deal on a computer, even if you aren’t the one going back to school. If you have been waiting to replace an old computer, here are a few tips: 1) Don’t ask the salesperson or your kids/grandkids for their suggestions.

These people know a lot about computers and technology, but they will likely recommend the machine they would buy for themselves. You are perfectly capable of picking out the right machine, even if you know very little about computers.

2) Be honest about what you are going to do with your new computer.

The most powerful computers on the shelf are powerful enough to create digital animation and play video games. Don’t buy a machine that will do everything you WANT to do with it. Buy a machine that will do everything you NEED to do with it.

3) Ignore the processor and focus on the RAM (memory).

Any computer you buy will be powerful enough for the Internet, email, digital photo management, document creation, etc. The processor is essentially the engine to your computer and RAM is the steering and suspension. RAM speeds up the computer’s reaction time and ability to stay stable as you move from task to task.

4) The size of the hard drive (storage) is generally irrelevant.

Any hard drive over 500GB is probably going to be large enough

to hold everything you create for at least five years. If you keep a lot of videos on your computer, you can fill up the empty space a little quicker. External hard drives cost less than $100. Don’t spend a lot more on a computer if the only advantage is storage.

5) Computers with SSDs generally run faster.

A solid state drive (SSD) is a hard drive storage device without any moving parts. Typically you get a little less storage for your money, but what you lose in capacity, you gain in speed. I would rather have a 500GB SSD than a traditional 2TB hard drive in my machine.

This is especially true if it’s a laptop or all-in-one computer.

6) Brand doesn’t matter.

Every brand has its lemons. There is a difference between Apple and other brands, but that difference is more than price. If you are comparing Dell to HP to Lenovo to Asus, etc., it’s important to know that all of these machines purchase their parts from the same original equipment manufacturers.

7) Stay away from the bargain basement.

Expensive computers generally go obsolete around the same time as inexpensive computers, but buying the cheapest machine you can find is always a bad idea.

8) Never buy a used computer.

As a general rule, you can always put a good computer to use. If someone is selling a used one, there is always a reason. ■

PROS • No credit check. If a person has trouble getting credit, borrowing from a 401(k) becomes an option because it requires no credit check.

• It’s more convenient. Usually less paperwork is required when borrowing from your 401(k) and you receive the money quicker than with a traditional loan.

• Better interest rate. “While the rate you pay depends upon the terms your 401(k) plan sets out, the rate is typically lower than the rate you will pay on personal loans or through a credit card,” Mackenzie said. “Plus, the interest you pay will be to yourself rather than to a finance company.”

• Opportunity cost. “One of the main drawbacks is the money you borrow will not benefit from the potentially higher returns of your 401(k) investments,” Mackenzie said. “Additionally, many people who take loans also stop contributing. This means the further loss of potential earnings and any matching contributions.”

• Potential penalties and tax consequences. A 401(k) loan not paid is deemed a distribution, subject to income taxes and a 10 percent penalty tax if you are under the age of 59 ½. “Should you switch jobs or get laid off, your 401(k) loan is required to be paid by the due date of your federal income tax return,” Mackenzie said. “If you do not have the cash to pay the balance, it will have tax consequences.”

• Less take-home pay. Most retirement plan loans are repaid as payroll deductions. “If you’re suffering financially and living paycheck to paycheck, a loan from your 401(k) doesn’t help you,” Mackenzie said. “If you’re squeezed further to pay monthly bills, a loan in fact could make your situation worse.”

• Red flags. “Borrowing from retirement savings to fund current expenditures could be a warning sign of overspending,” Mackenzie said. “You may save money by paying off your high-interest credit card balances, but if they get run up again, you will have done yourself more harm.”

Mackenzie said much of the decision on whether to borrow from a 401(k) depends on the degree of financial difficulty people find themselves in. They should always try to consider alternatives first, because retirement savings are so vital. ■

alf a century ago, in an atmosphere redolent of cow manure and marijuana smoke, 500,000 young people came together on the hillside of a farm in New York State for the biggest music gathering ever.

The historic Woodstock concert, which took place August 15-18, 1969, became the watershed moment of the late 1960s counterculture generation. It offered attendees a brief respite from political assassinations, inner-city race riots, anti-war demonstrations, Chappaquiddick, Charles Manson, a raging foreign war that made no sense, a general feeling of hopelessness and visions of a bleak future— if any future existed.

Translation: It was time to party!

LOCATION, LOCATION The architects of Woodstock included concert promoter Michael Lang along with Artie Kornfeld and trust-fund millionaires John Roberts and Joel Rosenman, who were both willing to fund Lang’s pet project: a history-making concert of prodigious proportions that would feature the current crème de la crème of rock music and ensure a

huge profit for investors.

In January 1969, the foursome named their fledgling company Woodstock Ventures, honoring Lang’s artsy adopted hometown 108 miles north of the Big Apple and his hoped-for site of the concert.

But Woodstock locals turned down the idea of a horde of rowdy, unwashed, longhaired hippies descending on their Norman Rockwell-style village. After required permits were denied, the four men set their sights on the hamlet of Wallkill, 64 miles south.

Locals were assured that the Woodstock concert would be a low-key, folky affair drawing no more than 50,000 music fans. Once given the green light, Woodstock Ventures leased the nearby 300acre Mills Industrial Park and went to work.

Top rock acts of the day were signed at top dollar (Creedence Clearwater Revival was the first), and around-the-clock toil was begun on prepping the area.

However, Wallkill folks began to get cold feet, and a hastily organized Zoning Board of Appeals denied the necessary permits.

BEACON SENIOR NEWS Ventures fell on deaf ears, and the proposed concert, now only one month away, appeared to be dead in the water.

Everyone panicked, except for Lang, who assured his partners that everything would work out somehow. With a tip from a Realtor friend, Lang journeyed 33 miles west and met with an open-minded Bethel, New York, dairy farmer named Max Yasgur, who agreed to lease a sizeable portion of his sprawling property in nearby White Lake. Just as before, Lang pitched the idea that no more than 50,000 concertgoers would show up.

GROOVE ON THE MUSIC In mid-August, a river of cars, vans and trucks flowed into White Lake until their drivers could go no further. Many abandoned their vehicles and walked or hitched rides in cars inching toward Yasgur’s sacred grounds: a bowl-shaped cow pasture that sloped to a flat space next to a crystal blue lake.

But problems were far from over for Woodstock Ventures. Rented portable ticket stands were never delivered, and the incoming human tsunami that weekend pushed over the rickety fences that had been erected around the perimeter. After a while, Woodstock was declared a free event, which meant that Roberts and Rosenman were out about $10 million in today’s money.

In between onstage entertainment, concert attendees often

cavorted, skinny-dipped and made love with abandon—and not always privately—as they endured stifling heat and humidity, booming thunderstorms and howling winds, all while gamely staving off exhaustion, thirst, hunger, a shortage of portable toilets and coping with rivers of mud.

Drug usage was rampant, but many concertgoers had come just to enjoy the world’s largest unchaperoned party and groove on the music.

And what music it was! Many of the 32 performing acts reflected the quintessence of late-1960s rock and included established megastars of the day like Sly and the Family Stone, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix, and such on-therise artists as Santana, Joe Cocker, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

The entertainment commenced on a Friday afternoon with folkie Ritchie Havens and ended the following Monday morning—rain had delayed the Sunday night performances by several hours—with the legendary Jimi Hendrix.

“We’d made history and ‘come together,’ but we also understood that it could never happen again. Soon there’d be Altamont and Kent State and Watergate and disco. Jimi and Janis and Jim [Morrison] would all die shortly thereafter, as if they knew it was all over too. But I also felt joy that misty morning. I knew I’d experienced something extraordinary and unique…I had shared a utopia with my brothers and sisters for a brief moment in time.”

Visitors to Yasgur’s farm that summer weekend began their inexorable march to adulthood, with many “rebels” eventually swapping their VW buses for sensible sedans, free love for marriage vows, spare change for an IRA, and a room at home for a 30-year mortgage. But for the 500,000 people on the cusp of maturity who had temporarily bonded as members of an elite club of sorts, it had meant three days that defined what many would come to mark later as the high point of their young (or perhaps entire) lives and one that to this day retains an almost sanctified aura. ■

Class of '55 righted social wrongs

T

he sight of a burgundy 2-cent stamp set inside my undergraduate scrapbook triggered memories.

A smooth, yellowing postal card, printed by my own hand, had once given me quick notification of a course's final grade. Computer-generated markings were years away.

Historians call the class of ‘55 “The Silent Generation” because of its collective attitude of latent resignation. Graduates with no post-Korean War world message wanted practical jobs offering financial security. Activists, hippies and radicals came a decade later.

Why haven't historians researched us? Television only looked at the “Happy Days” aspect.

The university I selected in 1951 had fewer students in attendance than my high school. My father drove our 1948 Oldsmobile with its modern hydromantic drive and a camp trunk of clothing and necessities covering the back seat.

Trunks, we soon found out, had to be taken to the dorm's basement and unloaded there. I was assigned a room on the fourth floor. There were no elevators. Housing 66 girls plus a housemother, the unit had only two telephones—one campus and one pay.

class of ‘55, were initiated into the student body one evening. Wearing a mandatory nametag around my neck and a beanie cap atop my blonde hair, I waited for upperclassmen to reach my dorm. I loved the freedom my legs felt wearing the required short skirt for this special night, and I giggled at boys who had to carry towels and wear pajamas.

With enthusiasm, I repeated my new school's songs and cheers as I squatted on cool grass behind the armory.

Old armed service barracks, not yet removed, housed some of my classes. The soles of my penny loafers caught concrete particles and grass clippings while running from the barracks to the main campus for class.

The Dean of Women gave her annual lecture to incoming coeds.

She warned us not to wear the color red as it excites men, not to wear patent leather shoes as it reflects our underwear, and to place newspapers between our buttocks and boys’ thighs if we wished to sit on their laps.

Coeds had curfews and there were penalties for violating any rules. Clothing regulations prohibited jeans or slacks except on Saturday afternoons. I was 17 years old.

In the early 1980s, the first semester's 15 weeks of higher education totaled $22,000 when my oldest was in a state medical school, and my younger two were undergrads at the University of Pennsylvania and Syracuse University. Before anabolic steroids were fashionable, or cortisone shots were injected into the injured players, before artificial turf and covered domes, I walked to the football stadium with a huge fluffy mum pinned to my wool plaid jumper.

Decaying colored leaves crunched under my white buck shoes. A mitt stuffed with fine baby powder cleaned the oxfords and, in my mind, I can still see myself beating the nap with a powdery mesh bag.

On-campus movies, scheduled around girls' 10:30 p.m. curfew, focused on daring, love, war and peace. I pretended to understand foreign-film messages.

A group once rented a 16mm sound movie. Some watched; others necked. When it ended, we cut open a watermelon, scooped it out, wrapped the meaty scoopedout part in an old T-shirt and squished it. Then the juice, with a few fine threads still clinging to it, was put back inside. Everyone got a straw and we all drank from the

or the first year, and what Cameron Reece hopes will continue for years to come, Crossroads Fitness is partnering with the City of Grand Junction in sponsoring this year’s Western Colorado Senior Games on August 19-25.

Reece, the health club’s general manager, said the partnership is a natural fit as both organizations support senior wellness through fun and camaraderie.

“We share the same goals and philosophies,” said Reece, “wellness through active lifestyles and healthy nutrition.”

The mantra associated with this year’s Senior Games is “We’re Not Done Yet.” Competition is open to anyone who’s at least 50 years old as of August 19.

In addition to more than 45 events ranging from dance to pickleball, enrollees can record their fastest times at a new indoor cycling challenge at Crossroads’ Airport location. Stationary bikes

are available all week long, allowing cyclists to ride for 10 miles with a screen displaying virtual rides across the Western Slope.

“We’ve had a great working relationship with Crossroads for a long time,” said City Recreation Coordinator Lorie Gregor. “They have a large base of age 50+ members to train for the games…and are very enthusiastic about being part of it.”

Crossroads offers senior wellness programing and social activities, including aquatics classes, gentle yoga, chair yoga, and the Heart-Strong program for post-cardiac episodes.

They also accept Silver Sneakers and Silver & Fit, two fitness programs that are offered with many insurance plans for older adults. ■

Mesa County Libraries win grant for discovery garden project Mesa County Libraries have been awarded a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Grant to assist in the development of the library’s discovery garden in Grand Junc-

Put corn on the menu, not in the tank

onald Trump didn't forget he promised Iowa's corn growers he'd be there for them if they helped send him to Washington.

He's told the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to start the process of permitting the sale of E15— a gasoline blend that's 15 percent ethanol—year-round.

Increasing demand for cornbased ethanol is the exact opposite of what should be done. It constitutes a massive handout to special interest groups and E15 imposes serious costs on the average American family while providing virtually zero environmental benefit.

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which dictates that a defined percentage of biofuels be blended into the gasoline supply already funnels some E15 into our tanks.

The fact that technological advances in biofuel production didn't materialize meant, under the RFS, an even heavier reliance on ethanol. That costs Americans dearly at the pump, and in everyday life, as anyone who forgot to drain fuel out of their lawnmower knows.

Ethanol production consumed 40 percent of all corn harvested in 2014. This has driven up the price of anything made from corn or which has corn in its food chain.

The wholesale prices of corn-fed beef, pork and chicken have increased by at 200 percent since the RFS was adopted. That reverberates down through the distribution chain, driving up food costs for consumers and businesses alike.

Gasoline with high ethanol content is also incompatible with most American cars. The engines and fuel systems in three out of four aren't made to run on E15. Auto-

makers are warning that E15 could even invalidate car warranties.

"Fuel not approved in the owner's manual is considered misfueling and any damage resulting from misfueling is not covered by the warranty," the Ford Motor Company told the EPA. Congress initially imposed ethanol requirements to curb our nation's reliance on foreign oil and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ironically, these problems have largely been solved, but not by ethanol, but by the oil and natural gas sector.

Our reliance on oil imports has been curbed. The U.S. now produces more petroleum and natural gas than any other country. And since 2009, American crude production has spiked almost 80 percent.

Until 2018, American carbon emissions had significantly fallen, thanks to the rapid expansion of domestic natural gas production.

Its widespread adoption has cut energy-related emissions to their lowest level in 25 years.

Ethanol production has huge environmental costs that far outweigh its paltry emissions benefits. According to a study in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, companies have been digging up once-pristine prairie habitats and converting them into corn fields to meet ethanol production targets.

The United Nations has warned that such conversions "pose risks to ecosystems and biodiversity."

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, a key player in this debate, says President Trump's attitude toward year-round E15 sales has always been "Let's get this done."
