The lil’ ole winemakers of Main Street

“I always say this place started on apricots,” said Scott Miller as he glanced around the storefront shared by The Lil’ Ole Winemaker and Amber Floral—two downtown businesses that have been staples of Grand Junction’s Main Street for more than 40 years.

S

cott and his wife, Malinda, own and operate this unique combination of florist and beer and winemaking supply shop located at 516 Main St. Even at 40 years old, the wine and beer making portion of the store is younger than the floral shop, with the homebrew store holding the distinction of being the oldest single-proprietor homebrew shop in the U.S. But before the apricots came the floral shop, which Malinda’s mother, Mary Galba, opened in 1956.

“Daddy taught horticulture at Colorado State University (CSU), and then he and two other partners came over and started the greenhouse out on Orchard Mesa by the cemetery and needed an outlet so Mom goes, ‘All right, I’ll go learn floral,’” Malinda said.

Her father, Joe, got into winemaking as a matter of necessity when, after the family moved to the Redlands in 1964, he had a bumper crop of apricots.

“You can only make so much apricot jam,” Scott said.

Malinda started working at the flower shop when she was a little girl.

“Mama had me making tufts when I was about 5 years old and she paid me a penny a piece,” she said. “I got faster so it was two for a penny, and I got faster and it was three per penny. When I got up to 10 for a penny, I said, ‘Give me something else to do.’ So that’s when I started making bows: a penny a piece, two for a penny…”

Though Malinda had wanted to continue to work in the floral shop after she graduated high school, her mom insisted that she go to college—and that’s where she met Scott.

TAKING ON HOMEBREW

Even though they had good jobs in Denver, the Grand Valley called the Millers home in 1978 and they joined the family business. Malinda integrated into the floral shop and Scott worked at the wine shop on the weekends until he took early retirement from his state job as a pollution control specialist and joined the wine shop full time.

In October that same year, Jimmy Carter signed a law legalizing homebrewing.

“He started this whole revolution," Scott said. "I thought, ‘I like beer,’ so I learned how to make it. Now I do as much wine as I do beer anymore.”

Scott generally favors Belgian-style beers, but like many craft beer and wine connoisseurs, his preferences change with the seasons.

“I always do a wheat, but the Belgians are still my favorite, whether it is a Belgian white, or a double or a tripel,” he said. “In the summertime, I like lighter style beers and the light crisp style white wines. In the wintertime, I tend to go darker. So I drink more red wines and porters or stouts and dark Belgians.”

The Millers have become very familiar with the equipment and supplies they sell, but their many

COVER STORY years of winemaking expertise is one of the things that truly sets their shop apart from many other homebrew shops in the state.

In fact, many of the state’s winemakers have been customers at one time or another, including Parker Carlson and Eames Peterson of Carlson Vineyards and Alfred Eames Cellars.

“I’ve found that if Malinda likes the wine, I have a hard time keeping it in stock because she’ll sell the heck out of it,” Scott said.

The homebrew shop predates all of the wineries in the state, and all but two breweries. Coors started in 1873 and Boulder Beer Company was established in September 1979, just weeks before Lil’ Ole Winemaker’s brewing store.

LIFE IS BEER AND BASEBALL

Besides wine and beer, the Millers also share a passion for skiing and baseball. When they take their annual hiatus from the shop in January, their most likely destination is a ski trip.

“I was actually up at Powderhorn the first day it opened,” said Scott. “[Skiing is] just a fun sport and beats the heck out of sitting around the house all day long.”

They’ve been season ticket holders to the Grand Junction Rockies since the team moved here, and they attend a couple Colorado Rockies games each year.

“As long as they still have Dirty Hippie at the [local] baseball games, I’m happy,” Scott said.

But even more so than either baseball or skiing, family and community are what make the Millers tick.

“Family is my first priority,” said Malinda, who raves about their two children: Amanda, a teacher

It was Mary Galba’s influence as head of Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division that led to the establishment of the free day at the Mesa County Landfill (then called Punch at the Dump), Spring Cleanup and the annual Parade of Lights.

Scott and Malinda’s generosity and volunteerism span decades. Scott is the past director for the Powderhorn Racing Club and former president of Monument Little League and Greenbelt (the forerunner of the Colorado Riverfront Commission) and just recently resigned from the Mesa County Air Quality Advisory Committee. Malinda is past vice chairman and district education chairman for Florist Transworld Delivery and was also president of the Colorado Floral Association and the Womens’ Division of the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce.

Together, they support the Grand

Junction Lions Club and donate the flowering plants for their annual carnival. Presently, they sit on the board of directors for the Redlands Community Center Foundation, helping prepare for the building’s upcoming 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020.

It was largely Scott’s doing that led to the creation of the Bookcliff Homebrew Club. When founding club president Tyler Frye came into the shop one day and asked where the local homebrew club was, Scott said, “You’re starting it.”

LOVE LIKE WINE

Celebrating almost 45 married years together, the Millers’ love and commitment to one another as spouses, parents and business partners is like a fine wine that gets better with age.

Showing up to run their store five days a week, it’s no wonder why they’re frequently asked how they manage to live and work together, day in and day out.

After he started a little club with his fellow teachers from Bookcliff Middle School, Tyler said, “Scott started giving out my phone number.”

“We don’t get too upset at each other,” Scott said. “We have our own work areas, although I help her out and she helps me.”

Since then, Scott and Malinda have been the club’s biggest supporters, from hosting the club’s annual Bockcliff Day at their Redlands home to fully sponsoring the application fee for the club to become a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit and

Building a better community: How will a

community center impact Grand Junction seniors?

It’s difficult to explain why Grand Junction still doesn’t have a community center. Fruita has one; so do Montrose, Moab and Glenwood Springs. Delta’s Bill Heddles Recreation Center is celebrating 25 years and expanding, and more than 40 percent of annual pass holders at the Montrose Community Recreation Center are 55 and older.

rand Junction residents, especially seniors, are missing out.

In November 2001, Grand Junction voters rejected a measure to build a recreation center. Discussion spurred again in 2014 with the Matchett Park master plan to help prioritize the community’s vision and goals for the future of the 200-acre park near 28-1/4 Road and Patterson.

Extensive conversations with Grand Junction residents and the business community, including gym owners, show there is enough capacity and need for a community center. Members of the Grand Junction Community Center Campaign (GJCCC) have worked cooperatively with City Council and the Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department to put the issue before voters

once again.

Their efforts paid off, when at their September 19 meeting, City Council unanimously approved a resolution to place the measure on the April 2019 ballot.

THE COMMUNITY SAYS

According to a grant-funded feasibility study that polled a realistic sample of adult and senior populations, 88 percent of the community thinks it’s important to develop a community center in the Grand Junction area. It also said 85 percent of registered voters support a sales tax increase to fund the community center.

“That’s an amazing amount of support,” said Marty McDaneld, vice chair of GJCCC, formerly PLACE (People for Local Activities and

McDaneld, 68, and GJCCC chair Andreya Krieves, lead this nine-member committee and volunteer group that has been instrumental in advocating for a community center and getting community members thinking about the economic benefits as well as what it would do to boost residents’ quality of life.

The facility that community members are calling for would be coined a “community” center because it will include flexible meeting/gath-

ering spaces with movable walls for seniors, youth and teens, as well as aquatics and fitness space. A variety of interest groups, such as a quilters’ workshop, have already contacted GJCCC in support of meeting space.

“Everyone will have their space, but the intergenerational piece is something we’re missing out on now,” said McDaneld. “At a community center, multiple generations have the opportunity to connect and be in tune with each other and cross-

Depending on programming, it’s possible that someday seniors will teach teens about fly-fishing and teens will help seniors with challenging technology issues within the walls of a new community center.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR SENIORS?

GJCCC discovered that seniors were the critical force in the Fruita Community Center (FCC) vote, and committee members have spent a tremendous amount of time learning from Fruita, Delta and Montrose community center staff and participants with a focus on the needs and wants of seniors.

A fairly recent transplant from Louisville, Colorado, McDaneld knows what a difference a community center can make.

“I grew up in an non-active family, and that didn’t change until my late 30s when I lived where there was a community center,” she said. “I just started low key…by walking on the indoor track, then eventually started using equipment, going to classes and taking yoga.”

McDaneld said a community center is a “community magnet”—a resource that offers something for everyone and is a great way to connect with friends.

“A walking track sounds so simple, but it’s an amazing resource for seniors. A warm exercise pool is one of our top amenities so seniors will be comfortable,” said McDaneld.

“Seniors miss the camaraderie. The social piece of a community center keeps you coming for the exercise.

They’re not two separate issues.”

Peripheral benefits for both users and non-users include increased property values, year-round access to healthy activities, business recruitment and retention and building social capital.

And what senior hasn’t found it challenging to find a new doctor?

Junction needs to appeal to young professionals who are looking for assets, such as a community center, for their families.

Like many Grand Junction families, Krieves frequently drives to the FCC to spend time with her young boys.

“When we’re visiting family or traveling, we look for community centers because they’re a place we can all go together,” she said. “When my parents visit, they take the kids to Fruita. I think the opening of the Fruita Rec Center has made a huge difference in the current Grand Junction interest. Now people get what it looks like if they didn’t before and they’re saying ‘Why isn’t this in my town?’”

“From our conversations with the community, we’ve got the momentum to do it right,” said Krieves.

“Our community, our families, and seniors specifically, deserve a place to be with others—a safe, comfortable place to be proud of, where you belong.”

While cost, amenities and other project details are not set in stone, the measure on the April ballot will include a Grand Junction sales tax increase of between 0.3 and 0.75 percent.

Old bags and spring chickens Dear Old Bag: I’m entertaining the idea of having my mother come live with us. We have a big house, and right now, I’m going over to her house almost every day after work to see how she’s doing.

It would save me a trip over there and she would be with us in the evenings. Have you or your readers had experience with this? EM Dear EM: I have seen this work, but more often, it seems to not go well. You did not state your and your mother’s ages, so I am assuming that she is old and living at home alone. Moving is hard on us older people. I do not believe that having Mom live with you to save you a trip is enough reason to uproot her. Here are some questions you might consider: How is her health? Will you be able to care for her if her health begins to fail, or will she have to move again? Has Mom given any indication that she would like to live with you? Although I love them dearly, living with my kids would be the very last resort for me! Have you considered other members in your household? Even though you may get along well with your mother now, living together is different. It has been my observation that two women in a household is one too many. I suggest you cautiously discuss this with your mom and your family. Try to look ahead to Mom’s future needs and what will be best for her as she ages. I am impressed that you would consider having her live with you. Please let me know how it goes. OB

Dear Old Bag: I have a friend who has also been my neighbor for years. When our husbands were alive, the four of us would go out together—I guess you could say we were drinking buddies. I have cut my alcohol consumption to no more than one drink per day, but my dear friend still drinks as if she were 25. Try to get her interested in volunteer work, going to the gym, going to church, or joining clubs or singles groups for seniors so she has something to look forward to other than drinking. Good luck. t’s no myth: Your ears grow larger as you age.

Scientists all over the world have revealed strong evidence to support this. Researchers at Texas Tech University found that ear circumference increases an average of 0.51 millimeters per year while physicians at the Royal College of General Practitioners in England found growth of 0.22 a year.

“This enlargement is likely associated with aging changes of collagen,” the Texas scientists reported. “The knowledge from this study allows us to calculate the age of an individual based on

ear size.”

Here’s how they calculated it: Subject’s age = 1.96 x (ear circumference in millimeters − 88.1).

Doctors from the University of Rostock in Germany measured the ears of 1,271 children and adolescents and reported that while ear length increases steadily and annually, ear width remains the same. Dr. V.F. Ferrario and four colleagues from the University of Milan’s Functional Anatomy Research Centre presented evidence that ear growth occurs in both women and men.

Despite all this research, something that scientists have yet to figure

out is why ears get bigger when the rest of the body stops growing.

The cause of enlargement is also a subject of debate.

Kay-Tee Khaw, a professor of clinical gerontology, said it might be that “big ears predict survival. Men with smaller ears may die selectively at younger ages. Ear size or pattern, or both, may be a marker of some biological process related to health.”

While this may sound far-fetched, many studies suggest that men with a diagonal crease in both ear lobes may have increased risk of heart attacks. ■

I

’m tired of everyone talking about carbs, proteins and fats. None of us want to count calories or evaluate ratios—it’s much easier to just eat food that is bright and colorful and full of life-giving nutrients such as kaempferol.

Heart disease. Research has found that women who have high intakes of kaempferol might be less likely to die of a heart attack.

It works in part by preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins.

Kaempferol (pronounced “campfur-all”) is an amazing antioxidant you get when you bite into raspberries, apples, grapes or tomatoes.

It’s also found in spinach, potatoes, onions, kale, endive, lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, lettuce, green beans, peaches, blackberries, cranberries, green tea and capers.

Breast cancer. Breast cancer spreads with the assistance of some compounds in your body called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Kaempferol slows down cancer cell invasion into other cells by blocking MMPs.

Kaempferol is a very promising and innocuous strategy to help with many disorders you’re suffering with, such as: Colon cancer. A 2014 study proved some benefits from kaempferol in human colon cancer cells.

Food poisoning. Fifty million people worldwide get infected with entamoeba histolytica. Transmission is pretty easy, as it occurs by eating or drinking food or beverages contaminated with the organism, which comes from feces. Kaempferol (and quercetin) was shown to destroy the parasite.

KAEMPFEROL SMOOTHIE Try this smoothie to increase kaempferol in your diet.

Ingredients: 1 cup pomegranate juice (or white grape juice) 1 small banana 1/2 cup blueberries 1/2 cup raspberries (or strawberries) 1/4 cup thick Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla)

Prostate cancer. According to Biomedical Reports 2015, kaempferol is shown to block prostate cell growth to some degree and has many chemo-preventive characteristics. Epidemiological studies suggest the more kaempferol you consume, the lower your risk of developing cancer.

Alzheimer’s disease. A study with fruit flies showed those that consumed a diet high in kaempferol had better climbing ability, memory and acetylcholine levels than the others. Even though the subjects were flies, it still shows promise for preventing Alzheimer’s disease in humans. ■

Not your grandmother’s string quartet

By Jan Weeks f you expect the Dallas String Quartet to sit quietly in long skirts and tuxes, reading sheet music, you’re in for a surprise. This group, DSQ Electric as they’re known, isn’t your grandma’s string quartet. The men appear traditionally dressed—the women not so much. And the music, where classical meets pop, guarantees you won’t snooze through the performance.

Bobbi Alpha, board president for Community Concerts of the Grand Valley, explained how groups are chosen for each season.

“We look at videos provided by booking agents of each artist or group,” she said. “We narrow the list down to 10, and from those we choose the ones we want to appear.”

DSQ impressed the board with their youth and enthusiasm and the way they turn classical music upside down. The group has toured worldwide and played with the TransSiberian Orchestra and Kenny G, and entertained at NFL games and the famous House of Blues.

Founder Ion Zanca was born in Romania of musician parents during the Communist regime. He attended the National Conservatory of Music in Bucharest, then came to the U.S. and received a master’s degree in musical performance from Southern Methodist University. He formed DSQ about 10 years ago, with the goal of innovating in an industry and style of music that has been played the same way for centuries. Violinists Melissa Priller and Eleanor Dunbar joined violist Zanca, along with bassist Young Heo. CCGV has been bringing music to the area for 74 years. This season's lineup features Black Market Trust, a nightclub/Gypsy jazz group, on November 15; The Jersey Tenors on March 1; Brad Ross, an illusionist billed as the next Houdini, on March 10; The Congratulations to Bob & Toni Sundermeier, our September ’50s photo contest winners!

The costly taste of a lemon: Remember the Ford Edsel?

By Randal C. Hill ometimes things just don’t go as planned.

S

In the mid-1950s, the Ford Motor Company invested $250 million— almost $2 billion today—in a highly touted new offering. Years of research had led to the creation of this vehicle. The name itself was selected from among 18,000 sometimes-bizarre possibilities, including the Zip, the Simplex, the Drof (Ford spelled backwards), the Zoom, the Intelligent Bullet and the Utopian Turtletop. The final choice had come from the first name of company founder Henry Ford’s only son—the Edsel.

Ubiquitous promotions spoke of “a new vista of motoring pleasure” and promised that the Edsel would be “unlike any other car you’ve ever seen.” At last, “E Day”—September 4, 1957—arrived amid hoopla that included school marching bands, helicopters trailing advertising banners, and traffic jams around newly created Edsel dealerships.

The paper that blocked views into showroom windows was about to be ripped down. Three million excited and curious car fans were on the verge of getting their first glimpses of the incredible, radical 1958 Edsel…

Then they saw it.

“That’s it?” was the common reaction.

Well, it was different. The Edsel, available in 18 different models,

featured, among other things, an unorthodox vertical oval grille. Its “tele-touch” automatic transmission offered push-button controls in the middle of the steering wheel.

Its speedometer could be set to flash warnings when a pre-selected speed limit was reached. Instead of gauges, the Edsel featured new “idiot lights” with messages that told the driver when a door was ajar or to service the engine.

Ford’s sales projections called for over 200,000 units a year and 600-700 vehicles to leave the showrooms each day. But by the first week in October, daily sales were only half that and falling fast.

November sales were even worse.

Ford honchos panicked.

It was the wrong car at the wrong time. America was entering an economic recession, and people suddenly seemed interested in smaller, more economical vehicles such as American Motors’ new Rambler and a feisty little German import, the Volkswagen Beetle.

Edsels were also constructed on accelerated assembly lines, which resulted in a disregard of quality control issues in order to meet output quotas. Sometimes doors rattled due to loose bolts. Within three months, the transmissions’ push buttons were experiencing a 50 percent failure rate.

My young grandson called the other day to wish me a happy birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, “68.” He was quiet for a moment and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a woman changed into old

slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. Her patience grew thin as she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious. Finally, she threw a towel over her head and stormed into their room and put them back to bed with a stern warning. As she left the room, she heard the 3-year-old say with a trembling voice, “Who was that?”

I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I pointed out something and asked what color it was. She always told me the correct answer. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door and said sagely, “Grandma, I think you should figure out some of these for yourself!”

“Give me a sentence about a public servant,” a teacher said to her elementary-school class. One boy wrote, “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the boy aside to correct him. “Don’t you know what pregnant means?”

Building a better food system by starting an indoor garden Something magical is happening in the world of food today. More and more, people are caring about where their food comes from. They attend farmers’ markets in search of locally grown produce, and some even grow their own food, too.

B

ut as the growing season comes to a close, we’re heading back to the grocery store, buying lettuce from California and winter squash from Mexico.

If one of our goals as gardeners is to become more empowered and self-sufficient by growing our own food, we’ve got to expand the boundaries of our gardens into conversations, schools and community spaces, and into the colder months of the year.

BASIC NECESSITIES

Your indoor garden will be unique to your situation. The amount of space and natural light you have to work with, how much time you spend away from home during winter, and what you like to eat are all contributing factors.

Consider your space. As you look around your house for a suitable growing space, your top priority is light. What space in your home gets the most natural light, and how can you get your indoor garden in that space? Tap into your creativity and resourcefulness. Vertical space is your friend.

Know what you’re growing. Just as it’s true in outdoor gardening, have a plan. Think about what you’d most love to eat fresh in winter, keeping in mind the goal of maximizing your harvest. Choose nutrient-dense varieties, and pair different vegetables together depending on their growing habits: tall plants with short ones, climbing plants with compact ones, plants that will grow out and over a pot with ones that won’t.

Succession planting—sowing

seeds every few weeks—gives you more produce to harvest more frequently. Keep successions in mind as you select your seeds. Here are some vegetables that are great in container gardening: • Leafy greens: lettuce, kale, arugula, spinach • Bok choy, mustard greens, cress, endive, Swiss chard • Green onions • Garlic greens • Leafy herbs: chives, cilantro, parsley • Woody herbs: rosemary, oregano, thyme • Pea shoots • Beet greens • Edible flowers: nasturtium, calendula • Climbing beans • Carrots • Radishes Find the right containers, and invest in good potting soil. For each plant you’re growing, choose a container deep enough to support its root system. Whatever container suits your space, make sure it has holes in the bottom for drainage and a saucer to catch water beneath it, and fill it with high-quality potting soil. Potting soil has materials in it like rocks, woodchips and perlite to help with drainage; you can purchase it or mix your own.

Sprinkle seeds evenly on top of the wet soil. Sow seeds thick; later, you can harvest sprouts and young leaves to thin out plants as they grow larger.

Cover with a thin layer of soil, and moisten with a mister bottle. Keep this top layer of soil moist, misting once or twice per day, until seeds sprout. Lay down a wet paper towel or cheesecloth if needed.

As sprouts become young leaves, you can enjoy a continual harvest by pulling the young plants out or cutting them at the base, leaving the roots in the soil as organic matter.

CARING FOR POTTED PLANTS

If ever there’s water in the saucer from the day before, wait to water again, as plants will pull water up from the base of the pot when they need it.

Since potted plants can’t rely on larger ecosystems for nourishment, consider adding natural and organic fertilizers, compost or vermicompost (worm poop). Air circulation is another one of nature’s gifts you may need to actively provide for your plants, too. Turning on a fan or opening a window on a warmer day once in a while will keep your plants happy.

Indoor gardening is a challenge, but one that brings us even closer to cycles of nature and to food.

Whether you’re doing it with larger food systems in mind or just for your own enjoyment, savor the progress you’re bound to make as you figure out what style of container gardening works for you. ■

Things to do and not to do in your garden this fall T

HOME & GARDEN DON’T be afraid to prune and trim.

Your trees and shrubs will look much better during the growing season.

They harbor diseases and make good pest nests.

DO remember the Three “Ds” of pruning: remove all dead, damaged or diseased branches or twigs from deciduous trees and shrubs.

DO divide or transplant spring-blooming perennials in the fall before the first frost. Iris, peony and daylily are good choices.

DON’T leave divisions to dry out.

Plant them as soon as you can.

DO choose firm, disease-free bulbs from a reputable garden supply store. Look for bulbs with smooth, unblemished surfaces.

DON’T prune any trees or shrubs that bloom in spring, such as azalea, rhododendron or dogwood. Pruning in fall removes all the flower buds for next spring. Wait until just after the flowers have faded in the spring to prune these.

DO water deeply in any new plantings.

Now is the time to put in bulbs that bloom in the springtime. As winter drags on, you’ll be glad you planted them in the fall when the first flowers appear.

TOOL CARE

DO rake all leaves off garden beds.

DON’T compost diseased plants. ■

DO remember there’s a lot of sun in a spring garden while choosing where to plant your tulips, daffodils or other spring bulbs this fall.

DO clean stuck-on soil and other debris off all tools.

DON’T buy bulbs and forget about

DON’T leave annuals or vegetables in the ground over the winter.

Shovels, pruners, rakes and hoes— all garden tools will perform better and last longer if they are clean and rust-free.

DON’T let your tools rust. Fill a bucket with dry sand and then pour about a half a gallon of vegetable oil evenly over the top. Let the oil sift through and then push your tools in. The sand keeps the tools clean and the oil keeps them rust-free.

DO set in the bulb with its nose straight up and its base in firm contact with the soil so that roots can form.

DO add additional mulch where needed.

The breathtaking result resembles a mini-fireworks display in the sea.

Back on land, other forms of life show up, at times in unexpected places. Chickens and roosters roam free, and iguanas may be spotted anywhere there’s a sunny spot.

Visitors frequently encounter little horses that roam free on the island.

Their ancestry is said to be traced back to 16th century Spanish conquistadors.

RICH HISTORY

When the conquistadors claimed Vieques after Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, they found it inhabited by the Taino people, one of the Arawak Indian tribes that lived throughout the Caribbean area. A subsequent rebellion by the Taino against the Spanish resulted in most of the natives being killed, imprisoned or enslaved. Traces of Taino culture remain in some place names, foods and the use of medicinal plants. Over centuries, the Spanish also successfully defended the island from efforts to control it

by France, Denmark and Britain.

A good place for a short course in island history is the El Fortin Conde de Mirasol (Count of Mirasol Fort),

built in 1845-1855 on a steep hill overlooking the town of Isabel II (Isabel Segunda). It houses a small museum with exhibits on anthropology, history and art.

Isabel Segunda, named for Queen Isabel II of Spain, is the larger of the two main towns on Vieques.

The square is a gathering place for locals and the site of occasional festivals and concerts.

Esperanza, the other town of note, is little more than a cluster of casual restaurants, bars and modest guesthouses that line the Malecon, a paved esplanade squeezed between the main street and the harbor. Come evening, strings of colored lights brighten the setting, music blares from several establishments and people crowd the streets and sidewalk chatting and sipping from paper cups.

The relative hustle and bustle in Isabel II and Esperanza contrasts sharply with the tranquil, laid-back atmosphere that pervades most of Vieques. Memories of bombs falling from the sky are a far cry from the tranquility that pervades much of the island today. For visitors to Vieques, these are among discrepancies that give the island diversity and appeal well beyond its small size.

Medicare Part D will see some changes with the annual deductible climbing to $415 and the initial coverage amount increasing to $3,820, which will result in beneficiaries paying $1,370 out of pocket before they reach the donut hole. The cost of prescriptions in the donut hole will be 25 percent for name brands and 35 percent for generics. After the cost of prescriptions exceeds $5,100, generics will cost $3.40 and name brands will cost $8.50.

Many drugs are changing formularies, including those embedded in a Medicare Advantage plan. The out of pocket costs are tiered with many drugs on the highest tiers, reaching as much as 50 percent of the drug’s cost. Sometimes paying cash and not using your drug plan can save money.

Ghoul or poor soul?

The phantom’s changing face

By Jacqueline T. Lynch on Chaney’s phantom in the original 1925 and 1929 rerelease of “The Phantom of the Opera” displays one of the most frightening screen images ever created. The sight of his mask being torn off to reveal a hideous face, whose shocked and malevolent expression haunts the audience, is one of the most memorable images from the era of silent films.

L

Chaney cleverly devised his own makeup (with wire and prosthetics that were painful), but it evoked quite closely the character imagined by author Gaston Leroux in his serialized novel, “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” (1910). That story describes the phantom as a character whose soul and body are riddled with decay. You can almost smell him on the page.

Subsequent versions of “The Phantom of the Opera” have taken slightly different turns, each exploring the possible not-so-evilas-he-is-misunderstood personality of the phantom. This culminated, of course, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s impressive musical “The Phantom of the Opera” (2004), based on his still-running Broadway musical. By now, the phantom is not as evil as he is petulant, and though his possessive love of Christine is still creepy, there is now an al-

lure—a sensuality to the character and to his seduction of Christine that did not exist in the original silent version or the book.

The sweeping obsessive romance played out by Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson in the 2004 musical is a bit different than Chaney’s scaring the socks off us, where we truly hope the dashing Norman Kerry will get Christine the heck out of that dungeon before the movie ends.

In 2004, we aren’t so sure we want Wilson to rescue Rossum from the phantom. When she leaves the phantom’s lair, we feel sorry for him and wonder what will become of him. Not so with Chaney, who fascinates us even as we are repulsed, but our sorrow for his plight and our empathy is held in check by the fact that he’s one seriously creepy fellow.

In between these two films, the 1943 version featured Claude Raines as a dashing, well-meaning, sympathetic, but ultimately crazy phantom. He is scarred by acid, launching his murder spree, the last straw in his unhappy life as a poor concert violinist.

Perhaps a good deal of the transformation of the phantom in our popular culture from ghoul to poor soul has simply to do with

our treatment of ugliness. Butler’s phantom is a man with what looks like a few old burn scars on part of one side of his face. Nothing we can’t live with, even though he vainly keeps it covered. Chaney’s face is a rotting, putrid skull that gives us nightmares.

The original book was written in the days when ugly was synonymous with evil, at least as far as storytelling was concerned. Chaney’s film was made, similarly, when the representation of evil was done mainly through an image of ugliness. We still have film monsters that are ugly, to be sure, but they are evil and ugly, not evil because they are ugly. There was not a whole lot of sensitivity towards people with mental or physical handicaps in prior eras, when desperate parents were still leaving deformed children with carnivals.

There wouldn’t be any empathy left over, either, for folks on screen who were simply less than beautiful.

In the code of old Hollywood, the heroes and heroines were beautiful, and the sidekicks and villains were not.

Today we have a different take on evil and beauty, and on empathizing with those who appear different, and that perhaps is one of the reasons why the 2004 phantom has changed. It would be difficult to film the 1925 story and present it to a 21st century audience with the same simplistic judgments.

The phantom’s evil as represented today is more psychological, and more a problem of society as the root of his evil because he has been treated so shamefully.

Instead of nightmares, now the phantom of the opera gives us second thoughts. ■

The princess in the pink mask

By Marti Healy he wore the golden crown with regal bearing, and it reflected brilliantly in the sun. Her gown brushed against her ankles in the slight breeze that also swept through her hair. Her right shoulder dipped in casual elegance, arm draped languidly at her side. Her left hand rested smartly on her hip, bracelets dangling.

In reality, she was small in stature, barely touching four feet in height, if that; but, also in reality, she was six months away from turning 9 years old. And, in reality, “reality” had nothing to do with her truth.

She was a princess that Halloween, complete with a gold cardboard cutout crown, pink gauzy-thin ball gown and a Mardi Gras-style mask that was a mismatched shade of pink and slightly too large for her face. Its elastic band kept sliding down the back of her head, taking the front down with it, causing brutal consequences with her ability to see through the eyeholes.

Nevertheless, she was royal, beautiful and achingly confident.

Of all the costumes and masks I’ve ever worn before or since that Halloween, this is one of the most memorable. This was my first store-bought costume, and the first time I wore a mask. I thought the gown exquisite, the crown startlingly realistic, and the mask a disarming awakening to possibilities that had never existed before. Behind the mask, I could live within any dream I wanted. I could be anything I could imagine.

I have a black-and-white snapshot of this moment, where I can see the casual tilt of the head, the hand on hip and the utter confidence of being a princess behind a mask.

My current-day yoga instructor told me that the hand-on-hip stance has been proven to be one of the most confidence-centric messages delivered through body language, for the poser as well as the observers around her.

The only person I remember who wasn’t terribly impressed with my gold-crowned princess-ness was the “witch” standing behind me in the picture—my 11-year-old sister.

I suppose sisters are universal that way, and are meant to keep you humble. But it didn’t affect my self-image all that much. The mask protected me.

In the years since that day, I have learned about other kinds of masks.

Those that guard and intimidate, and cover up and change; the masks that deny pain as well as love, and transform ugliness as well as beauty; masks that hide desperation and loneliness and fear and doubt; masks that protect the child in all of us.

I suspect most people believe that to really know and love one another, we need to look beyond the masks and cherish the faces behind them. But sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is to pretend we don’t see a mask at all, and simply accept the person as they want to be seen, the illusion as presented, the princess in charge. After all, reality often has nothing to do with anybody’s truth. ■

By Kristian Hartter ave Davis was someone special. His impact on the community, especially as it pertains to art, is hard to overstate.

As the driving force behind Art on the Corner, his influence reaches throughout the Grand Valley and beyond. As a mentor and friend to other artists, and with the recent establishment of his nonprofit, Davis Art Process and Media Learning Center, his vision will continue. His personality and spirit were as grand as his most monumental artworks and could fill a space just as wholly.

Davis started Art on the Corner in 1984 as a way to combat the depression that was prevalent in the valley due to Grand Junction’s boom and bust cycles. He called on his artist friends to donate works to the project to lift the spirits of local residents and to help broaden the community’s economic base. In September of 1986, he was named director of the Western Colorado Center for the Arts, and helped it become more accessible to a wider audience.

Perhaps one of Davis’ most memorable traits was his positivity. Local artist and one of Dave’s former mentees, Pavia Justinian, recalled, “When I think of Dave, I think of his great big smile and his booming laugh. You could not be sad or

“There used to be little ideas and rules in art I wanted to go against and he told me to go for it,” said Alexis Biskupski, another one of his mentees. “It’s a lot of experimenting. That’s one thing he was big on.

He wanted people to break away from making plans and sticking to plans. He wanted you to be able to come up with a small idea and build something big from it.”

That organic process was one of his hallmarks.

“He was very much in the flow,” Justinian said. “He would say, ‘Let’s go look at some stuff.’ He’d have his cup of coffee and all of these file cabinets full of metal and glass, and he’d just be sipping his coffee with his cigarette, and he’d open up drawers and put different things together and see how they looked and just let the piece speak to him.”

With Davis’ Paint the Piece project, he’d invite people to paint on a huge canvas—sometimes at his annual Paint the Piece parties and at times when the opportunity arose. He’d then paint over the artwork with white paint and the process would take place again. The piece has had 272 iterations. Davis wanted to reach 500 before he set it outside to let the elements indiscriminately undo all of that work.

His daughter, Amanda, will continue the project in his honor.

Biskupski put it simply, “He’s a person that you can’t forget.” ■

Communication etiquette for technology users

C

ommunication has become a very complicated matter in the 21st century.

When you call someone, do you even dial their phone number? Do you have friends or relatives who never answer their phone, but immediately answer a text? Do people ever ask you to contact them through Facebook?

How do you know the most appropriate method to get in touch with somebody so that you don’t waste their time or interrupt their day?

Understanding the etiquette of modern communication has very little to do with age or tech savvy.

While there are no absolutes, there are matters of courtesy that should be considered when using technology to communicate.

Many people are still afraid to call a friend on their cell phone. Most cell phone users are on unlimited talk plans, so calling a cell phone is not the intrusion it once was when it cost people money to talk on the phone. Even on plans with limited minutes, most people text so much that they have minutes to spare.

However, the telephone requires immediate interaction. If the person is busy, they may let it go to voicemail. Most people screen their calls and will put off responding to voicemail until they have time and a quiet venue to listen.

Contrary to common sense, the phone is often not the best method for an immediate reply.

Texting is typically the most efficient form of personal communication. It usually doesn’t require formal introductions or sign-offs.

If you need information from someone, just ask them via text.

The best part about texting is that you can send a text message at any time and the recipient will answer when they are available.

That’s not to say that the recipient should wait days or weeks to reply, but a few hours is typically acceptable.

Email is not the preferred communication method it once was.

Although it’s fast and free, very few people read their email every day—especially young people. It’s still an efficient form of business communication, and is excellent for occasional long-form communication or for sharing documents.

Facebook is another common venue, but its efficiency varies.

Almost everyone is on Facebook.

Although it’s not the hot trend it once was, many people still use it for communicating with acquaintances they may not otherwise interact with.

Common uses might be reaching out to a long-lost friend from school or contacting a business for information. Facebook is the least formal of all communication methods, but it’s also the least traditional.

Communication via technology is still a new frontier. These are essentially just common understandings. The etiquette will vary by demographic, professional use and familiarity between the sender and receiver. ■

The new Medicare cards no longer contain your Social Security number, but rather a randomly assigned Medicare number that’s unique to you. The new card will help protect your identity and keep your personal information more secure. You can start using your new card as soon as you receive it. Your Medicare coverage and benefits won’t change at all.

Medicare will automatically mail your new card at no cost to the address you have on file with Social Security. Please make sure your mailing address is up to date.

Once you get your new Medicare card, take these steps to make it harder for someone to steal your information and identity: 1) Destroy your old Medicare card right away (shred it).

2) Doctors and other health care providers know that Medicare is replacing the old cards. They are ready to accept your new card when you need care.

3) Beware of anyone who contacts you and asks for your new Medicare number, personal information,

or to pay a fee for your new card.

There are no charges whatsoever for the new cards.

4) Guard your card. Treat your new Medicare number like you treat your Social Security or credit card numbers. Only give your new Medicare number to doctors, pharmacists, insurers, or other people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf—and be sure they are really who they say they are.

Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give us personal or private information to get your new Medicare card.

Scam artists may try to get your current Medicare number by contacting you about your new card. If someone asks you for your information, or for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits if you don’t share your personal information, hang up and call us at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Fighting Medicare fraud pays—literally

By Teresa Ambord he fastest-growing area of fraud is medical identity fraud, and whether you’re a senior or not, it affects every American.

T

With those numbers in hand, thieves can bill for services and medical products that weren’t ordered, weren’t necessary, and, many times, weren’t received.

It’s no secret that Medicare and Medicaid resources are scarce and the number of beneficiaries is massive. With so many baby boomers coming of age and Obamacare causing an explosion in Medicaid dependence, the problem grows constantly worse.

How do they get your Medicare number? Often, simply by asking for it. Those unsolicited phone calls and the TV ads offering back braces, knee braces and other equipment free to Medicare beneficiaries want your Medicare number. You may or may not receive the items, but rest assured, Medicare will pay the bill.

One reason medical ID fraud is so popular is that it involves the deep pockets of the federal government.

It’s also more lucrative than stealing credit cards. A thief with your credit card numbers may run up your balances. If they get your debit card, they can bleed you for every penny in the bank. But even in the worst case, those wells eventually run dry. When a thief gets your Medicare number, the fraud can go on and on.

Thieves need two pieces of information to commit Medicare or Medicaid fraud: your medical identity number and the identity of a medical provider, such as your doctor.

It’s tempting (who doesn’t love free stuff?) but keep in mind, if you need a knee brace, your doctor will prescribe it. And by accepting the “free” items, even if you don’t receive them, you’re opening the door to theft.

According to Deputy Inspector General Gary Cantrell of the Office of Inspector General (OIG), the American taxpayer is impacted to the tune of billions of dollars in medical fraud. It can also affect you directly. If your medical identity is used in a fraud scheme, even if you are unaware of it, your ability to get the care you need may be delayed or denied.

SENIOR SCAMS

Those unsolicited phone calls and the TV ads offering back braces, knee braces and other equipment free to Medicare beneficiaries want your Medicare number.

THE OIG RECOMMENDS:

• Protecting your information by not giving out your Medicare number to anyone over the phone, internet or mail.

• Watching for common schemes, such as offers of medical services or products that your doctor has not ordered.

• Check your medical statements right away. If there are unusual charges, ask your medical provider. It could be a simple error, but it’s better to find out.

• When you receive medical care, put it on your calendar with a brief description so you can compare it to medical statements when they arrive. Some Medicare beneficiaries have found bizarre charges billed in their names, such as a woman receiving treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Medicare says you could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for fighting fraud if all of these conditions are met:

1. You report your suspected Medicare fraud. The allegation must be specific, not general.

2. The fraud you report must be confirmed as potential fraud by the Program Safeguard Contractor, the Zone Program Integrity Contractor or the Medicare Drug Integrity Contractor and formally referred as part of a case by one of the OIG contractors for further investigation.

3. You aren’t an “excluded individual.” For example, you didn’t participate in the fraud offense being reported.

4. The person or organization you’re reporting isn’t already under investigation.

5. Your report leads directly to the recovery of at least $100 of Medicare money.

The incentive reward can’t exceed 10 percent of the overpayments recovered in the case or $1,000, whichever is less. If multiple individuals qualify for a reward, it is shared among them.

Fortunately, there’s a new game in town for those of us who don’t hear as well as we used to. The Colorado West Audiology mobile unit brings testing equipment to you in a nearby location so you no longer have to trek to the office to find out how to correct your hearing.

“We will be able to test patients and also fit them with the appropriate aids directly from the mobile van,” said Hearing Instrument Specialist Kellan Williams. “We’ll be a onestop hearing shop!”

The mobile unit was designed to offer Grand Valley residents more and better access to hearing services. It's the only mobile service in the valley and began operations in August.

“The unit will spend a full day in Fruita, another in Palisade, and days in different places around the area,”

Williams said. “Clients can call to find out times we’ll be near them.”

Williams travels with the unit, along with her colleague, Ken Honda, who became interested in hearing loss when his son, now 22, had speech problems in elementary school and needed tubes inserted in his ears to relieve the pressure and allow him to hear fully, which helped clear up his speech problems. But it wasn’t until his father-in-law needed hearing aids that Honda started exploring the processes involved to become an audiologist.

Following 300 supervised training hours and an apprenticeship, Williams and Honda will become licensed by the state to dispense hearing aids.

The mobile unit is part of Colorado West Audiology, a business that has been helping people hear better for over 30 years. Working in concert with Colorado West Otolaryngologists, the staff at both offices aim to create maximum hearing improvement for clients.

“We function with the ENTs (ear, nose and throat doctors) to test

your hearing,” Williams said. “If there’s no medical reason for loss, our practice can fit you with hearing aids.”

If there’s a medical reason, other than age or loss of cilia due to high levels of noise, the ENTs will do the surgical side of hearing improvement, such as implanting a cochlear device in patients with severe hearing loss.

Audiologists will talk with individuals, diagnose the type of loss, and help patients decide what device is best for them.

“We actually fit the device to the type of hearing loss,” Williams said.

“We can check and reprogram their present devices at no charge if they purchased them from us. The check alone is free if they bought them from another place. However, there will be a fee for reprograming.”

League of Women Voters forum shines light on local issues

Which party will control the Senate and the House? Of course, local voters will be casting ballots on the national questions, and there are some issues that are just as important locally.

The League of Women Voters (LWV) and the American Association of University Women have paired up to sponsor a free issues forum on October 10.

According to LWV’s Voter Services Chairperson Robyn Parker, the forum begins with speakers giving arguments both for and against each issue for about six minutes each. After each speaker finishes, the audience will be given a chance to ask questions.

Issues include Ballot Issue 1A, which would allow Mesa County to receive and keep any state grant revenue without being penalized under the Tax Payers’ Bill of Rights, resulting in more funds for county projects.

Amendments Y and Z are efforts to restrict gerrymandering, the practice of drawing political maps for political purposes. Y would appoint a commission to redraw congressional boundaries after the 2020 census. Amendment Z would do the same for the legislative boundaries.

Every 10 years, after the national census, Colorado lawmakers create congressional districts while a politically appointed commission draws legislative maps, supposedly to reflect shifts in population. However, the majority party can then skew

votes to mostly assure their candidates will win in those districts. This gives larger districts more power than smaller ones. Colorado’s effort to end gerrymandering may be the most extensive of any state.

“Bernie Buescher will be talking about Y and Z, the redistricting initiative, and Rose Pugliese will address the exemption to the TABOR amendment that would allow Mesa County to accept state grants without those funds being counted as taxable income,” Parker said.

You can still register to vote. Eligible Colorado residents can register up to and including the day of the elections, November 6. Voters can register ahead of time at the Mesa County Elections office, 200 S. Spruce St. in Grand Junction.

Voters can also register on election day by showing a Colorado drivers license or Social Security card at the polls. They can also register at www.govotecolorado.com.

The forum takes place at 6 p.m. at the Whitman Educational Center.

What’s so funny? How I learned to

be funnier in less than a week

As a kid, I was a great audience for my brother, the family clown. I’d cry because I'd laughed so hard. Sometimes I had to bolt to the bathroom before I wet my pants.

I have no idea why my eyeballs haven’t fallen out of their sockets from 60 years of eye rolling over my 92-year-old dad’s witty quips and puns. I decided it was time to turn the tables and up my game—I wanted to be funnier myself.

Last year, I was first in line to sign up for “How to be funnier in less than a week” at Western Colorado Community College. The class, led by 78-year-old Glenna Kyker, had five students—all 60-something

females—no men. We decided they must think they’re already as funny as it gets.

DAILY LIFE IS FUNNY Being funny is not “one-size-fits all.”

What makes you funny is unique to you. If it was always about reciting jokes, talking parrots could be the funniest creatures on the planet.

Being able to laugh at yourself and finding humor in every day situations is key to being funny. Make others laugh by telling your funny stories or embarrassing moments.

“I bought the perfect coat for my daughter at Heirlooms for Hospice on Main Street,” Kyker said. “It looked just like her. When I gave it to her, she said, ‘I just donated that last week!’”

Hurst received the gift of humor herself recently. After a tough yoga class and while dealing with some challenging health issues, she sat down on a locker room bench with a heavy sigh. A stranger sat next to her, and without introduction, she told her a joke from the BEACON’s Laughing Matters. Then she got up and walked away.

“It was just what I needed,” said Hurst.

“Trinity is well known throughout the west and has performed internationally,” said Nona Kelley Carver, planning committee member and poet at this year’s event.

“She is a singer and songwriter from British Columbia who lives with her husband and children on a working ranch in Montana. She has won numerous awards and has CDs available, as do most of the performers.”

Seely was recognized as the Academy of Western Artists’ Female Western Singer of the Year in 2012.

Her song “Cowboy Hat” was also the Western Music Association’s Song of the Year in 2014.

According to the event website, cowboy poetry grew from a time when, after a day of work, cowboys would gather around the campfire to occupy and entertain one another with tall tales and folk songs.

This form of poetry grew out of a tradition of extemporaneous composition carried on by workers on cattle drives and ranches.

Performances start at 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Admission to daytime performances is free, but donations are greatly appreciated to keep this event going. Evening performances start at 7 p.m. and are just $10 per night for adults; kids under 12 are admitted free.

“Cowboy poetry and music presents some of the cleanest family entertainment today,” said Carver.

“We need the morals and respect taught through this type of entertainment in our communities.”

By Nona Kelley Carver When God created mountaintops, He threw the book away, and said, “I’ll make Grand Mesa a place where folks can play.”

He flattened out the top of it with pressure from his hand, and planted it with spruce trees.

The scale of it was grand!

He used his thumb to imprint the many lakes and streams.

He broke the surface of the earth, flowed lava through the seams.

He sowed the seeds of larkspur, and sage and columbine.

He dampened it with showers, then bade the sun to shine.

Then He invited bluebirds, and taught them where to nest, walked hand in hand with nature, He really did his best!

He warmed it in the summer so aspen trees could grow, and cooled it in the winter with flakes of sparkling snow.

He filled the lakes with rainbows, caught on the sides of trout, created dens of black bear, and scattered deer about.

He brushed it in the autumn with aspen leaves of gold, and asked the lakes to sparkle with water, deep and cold.

And so, we have Grand Mesa.

Some things aren’t always what they seem

By Bonnie McCune here was a time after my kids reached legal adulthood when I greeted Halloween with a sigh of relief. No longer did I need to hustle creative juices, time and money to try to outdo other moms and grandmas in costuming little ones.

But after that early epoch, as I attempted to sink into a cathartic calm of middle age, an adventurous friend appeared on my doorstep one October 31. Neither of us had been invited to an adult Halloween party, however, she was rarin’ to go out on monkey business.

We must've been in our 40s at the time, but her idea was to cobble together a costume out of whatever we could lay our hands on and try to pass ourselves off as children to our neighbors. Since we’re both short—barely breaking five feet—we weren’t much bigger than the early teen rabble-rousers we saw coming to the door during the evening’s later hours.

She came supplied with charcoal and eye shadow so we could disguise our faces, and dressed herself in a wig and shabby old clothes she’d retrieved from discards in the closet while I raided my husband’s stock of outdated outfits. We smudged coloring on our jaws like five o’clock shadows and around our eyes like weary laborers, and off we went.

We figured we resembled 13-yearold boys dressed as bums. As we walked up to a door, we slumped and hunched a bit and pulled our hats down. I still doubted we’d fool anyone, but I beat on the door, mumbled “Trick or treat,” and held out a bag. My friend did the same.

Our friend and neighbor, whom we saw almost every day, didn’t bat an eye. She hauled out the candy, loaded our bags, chatted a bit about

Halloween mischief and escorted us to the exit. That’s when we revealed our true persona. We’d buffaloed her completely.

And so it went at each of the half-dozen or so homes we visited. We hoodwinked every single person and we gathered a load of sweets that I didn’t share with my family later. I’d worked hard for my booty.

Our little adventure convinced me that people see what they want to see instead of what’s really there.

I don’t think our costumes and makeup were particularly artistic, but not a soul really looked at us.

Since then, I’m never surprised when I hear stories of a homeowner shooting his own child during the night when he’s thinking he’s battling a thief; or if a policeman guns down a dark fuzzy character when he thinks he’s stopping a murderer.

In these days of rush to judgment, whether that’s the perpetrator responsible for the violence or the ever-disapproving public judging it, it’s way too easy to make accusations or even take action based on unfounded assumptions. While the ability to make decisions based on logic is usually a plus, it can also lead to error. Let’s think a little before we do so. ■
