I got a chuckle from this opener to Karen Telleen-Lawton’s article on page 32 since as anyone who has worked with government-sponsored programs—especially health insurance—can attest, that’s NEVER the case.

The ins and outs of Medicare might seem scary, but don’t let the idea of making changes to your plan spook you. Even if you’re happy with your current Medicare coverage, it’s important to review it yearly, as things like cost, plans and in-network providers and pharmacies change. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to review; open enrollment starts October 15 and ends December 7.

Protecting the promised land Rob Bleiberg preserves Colorado’s landscapes, one property at a time

By Melanie Wiseman rowing up near Washington, DC, Rob Bleiberg saw first-hand the destruction to Virginia’s picturesque landscape as a result of ill-conceived development. As the executive director of Colorado West Land Trust (CWLT), he wants to spare Western Colorado that same fate.

“With 300,000 people slated to move to the western slope in the next 25 years, our landscapes are really going to be impacted,” said Bleiberg. “We have a couple of decades to conserve this land or see these iconic landscapes forever change.”

Bleiberg, 53, and the CWLT staff work diligently with landowners to discuss and create binding conservation agreements that protect and enhance agricultural land, wildlife habitat, recreational areas and scenic lands across six counties. Under these agreements, the landowner continues to own the land, manage it and pay property taxes, but the agreement or easement prohibits the land from ever being developed.

“We want to be welcoming new neighbors, but the question is how do we accommodate the growth which can bring so many positive things and still protect the most important places in the region?” said Bleiberg.

CONNECTING ON CONSERVATION

SUPPORTING THE ECONOMY

That's the question that led a group of Palisade farmers to establish the Mesa Land Trust (MLT) at the height of the oil shale boom in 1980. With a predicted population growth of close to 1 million people, the farmers wanted to protect their agricultural lands from being developed.

“The incredible Palisade landscape, both beautiful and economically productive, was facing extraordinary threats,” said Bleiberg. “There was nothing in place to protect it until these farmers stepped up and did something.”

MLT was run entirely by volunteers until the organization secured enough funding in 1996 to hire a staff, which Bleiberg was thrilled to lead into the future.

In 2017, MLT merged with the Black Canyon Regional Land Trust in Montrose, and the combined organization was aptly renamed to reflect the region it now served: Mesa, Delta, Montrose,

Bleiberg explained that land trusts are one of the most effective ways to make a difference in land conservation. Agreements are voluntary, and his staff is available to help guide landowners through the process.

“We are not political or partisan and aren’t trying to tell people what to do with their land.

They simply share our conservation vision and desire to make a difference,” he said.

Conservation agreements, while voluntary, are also incentive based. But for many landowners, the biggest incentive is simply protecting the area’s serenity and recreational opportunities, and capitalizing on the economic benefits that come with them.

In 2001, Sister Anne Brost and Sister Mary Glenn saw that beauty reflected in their 94acre Whitewater property, which they wanted to protect from development. With help from

CWLT, they signed a conservation easement, giving them comfort in knowing the land would remain unchanged. Even with the recent sale of their property, the easement transfers with the property to the new owner.

For Gary Roberts and Barbara Parish, it wasn’t as much about conserving the land they already had as it was about making sure that a neighboring ranch didn’t fall into the wrong hands.

After hearing talk of possible development, they finalized a conservation agreement in 2017 for a 242-acre ranch between Ridgway and Ouray, which they purchased in order to preserve the area's ranching history and to keep the valley floor open for wildlife.

That was also the intention behind John Welfelt and Stephen Lewis’ decision to purchase 160 acres in Delta County on the Uncompahgre River in the 1990s, which they also backed with a conservation agreement.

“What a great gift from these landowners to conserve amazing landscape that is so unique and beautiful in Colorado, and such an economic driver as well," said Bleiberg. “People want to live here for the quality of life and outdoor

IT TAKES A VILLAGE In an age of instant gratification, Bleiberg stressed the importance of CWLT’s work for the long term, which would be a lot harder to accomplish without help from community members, city governments and partnering agencies such as Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

Years ago, a number of Glade Park residents came together to ensure their area remained a ranching and wildlife community. They conserved 45,000 acres with an additional 10,000 designated for the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Ranchers Dave and Chele Hawks also completed a 780-acre Glade Park conservation agreement in December.

“The land conserved on Glade Park is twice the size of the Colorado National Monument,” said Bleiberg. “It’s wonderful what we can accomplish when we work together.”

By working closely with community members like Rob and Clare Talbott of C&R Farms, CWLT has also helped conserve 45 family farms in Palisade. And thanks to an innovative partnership with the Archeological Conservancy, an elaborate, sacred petroglyph site near Montrose has also been preserved.

“There is collaboration everywhere you look,” said Bleiberg. “I’d much rather come together to achieve goals than to fight.”

The community and CWLT did just that when the Three Sisters area on Monument Road was slated for development. In order to prevent that

and protect the property, locals donated anywhere from $5 to $100,000 to CWLT, allowing the organization to purchase the property, which they donated with a conservation easement to the City of Grand Junction. Combined with the Lunch Loop and bookend properties, this area has become a multi-use mecca for thousands of outdoor enthusiasts each year.

Based on the organization’s vision for community and connectivity, the Lunch Loop Connector Trail project, which will link Las Colonias Park, the Colorado Riverfront Trail and the Lunch Loop Trail System, is currently underway.

"We'll be doing revegetation and habitat work, and we're looking for volunteers to help with that," said CWLT Development Director Mary Hughes. "It's a massive undertaking to engineer the trail through that area, but once it's complete, it's going to blend in with the surrounding landscape."

One of Bleiberg's favorite things about his job and CWLT's legacy is seeing people recreating and enjoying themselves.

"I love the quote that ‘People build trails and trails build community,’” said Bleiberg. “It’s a privilege to do work that has a great impact and protects the landscapes around us, values them and passes them along to future generations.”

“My mom taught me the loving and respectful way to treat women,” said McKenna, 67. “My goal is to reach every woman in the Grand Valley and teach her self-defense for free before I die. If I save one person’s life then there’s my ticket to heaven.”

Raised by an incredible single mom who worked two jobs and took the bus everywhere, McKenna learned to respect women at a young age.

“The lack of respect, devaluing of women and ‘if I want it I take it and I can get away with it’ direction our society is going in is why it’s important for me to give empowerment to ladies today more than ever before,” he said.

McKenna’s passion is also a living tribute to his wife of 34 years, who helped him teach self-defense classes until she died from ovarian cancer five years ago.

ROUGH BEGINNINGS Growing up near a rough neighborhood in Pueblo, Colorado, McKenna was often bullied as a kid.

He got beat up a lot and learned to run away fast. Eventually, he found boxing as a way to stand up to the other high-spirited young men, and joined a team.

Now, McKenna is a nationally certified black belt karate instructor with more than 35 years of experience. He is also proficient

at Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Tai Chi and fought martial arts in the ring for 10 years.

McKenna moved to the western slope in 1978, and spent most of his career in health care, where he found a new need for his particular skill set.

“Working mostly with women over the years, they told me horror stories of being abused physically, emotionally and mentally, even by doctors,” he said.

That's when he decided to teach self-defense beginning in the 1980s.

friends and neighbors have also taken him up on his free classes.

McKenna will teach any woman 18 years or older, either one on one or in groups of up to 24 women.

The time and place of each class are up to the participants. Front yards, back yards, living rooms, garages, office meeting spaces or a park: McKenna has done it all.

No athleticism is required. McKenna emphasizes pressure points, joint locks and vital point techniques. And safety always comes first.

“I’m not going to teach you to kick and punch. I’m going to teach you how to get away," said McKenna. "That appeals to women because, for the most part, they aren’t brawlers, they just want to feel safe.”

A LITTLE R-E-S-P-E-C-T Unfortunately, fear and past trauma bring many women to his classes. At least a few women in each of his classes have experienced rape,

date rape or spousal abuse. Most situations involve alcohol and family members, friends or neighbors.

McKenna believes that the key to helping women, especially if they have been abused, is self-respect.

“If you have self-respect, you’re not going to tolerate someone doing something inappropriate to you,” he said.

McKenna also believes in changing women’s body language to send a message of confidence. Women want to communicate to potential assailants that they are able to defend themselves and that they should be left alone. When they walk out of his class, he wants them to have a presence that sends the message, “Don’t mess with me.”

“There is a change in people from the time they come to my classes to when they leave,” said McKenna. “It’s a subtle thing, but they are now telling themselves, ‘I don’t have to be a victim.’”

• Pinch and twist assailants anywhere there’s loose skin—underarms, neck, “love handles.”

• Practice on yourself. What hurts?

• Grab hair or stomp your heel on their foot.

• Knowing grip and finger releases catches assailants off guard and helps you get away.

• Knowing vital or pressure points, primarily the head and neck, are game changers.

• Stay on your feet. Once you fall, you become prey.

• Keep your chin down and your hands up, legs front and back for a strong stance.

• Chop with your forearm— your most durable weapon.

• Claw and strike eyes and face.

• If nervous, don’t be on your phone. It makes you distracted and vulnerable.

• Be prudent and aware, not paranoid.

• Breathe or you will get exhausted and lose energy.

• Knowing pressure points is more important than being big or strong.

• Put something between you and the other person—a chair, bench or table.

• Attitude is everything. Use your "mother voice" and say "NO!" No means no.

What should I look for in sunglasses?

T his is a question with yearround relevance, especially in the Grand Valley where there are 245 sunny days a year.

The most important feature in sunglasses is the ability to protect your eyes from invisible ultraviolet (UV) light, which also causes sunburn. Long-term exposure to UV radiation in sunlight is linked to eye disease, so make sure to buy sunglasses that block 99 percent or 100 percent of all UV light.

Most eye doctors also recommend wearing a brimmed hat when you’re going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time.

If you don’t protect your eyes from the sun, you risk getting cataracts, macular degeneration and cancerous growths on the eye.

Most of the eye damage caused

by UV light rays is gradual and irreversible. People also have different

levels of sensitivity to UV radiation.

As a precaution, it's wise to wear sunglasses any time you are outdoors.

Here are some other sunglass features to consider, not linked to UV protection.

SHADE: A medium lens will suit the average person on most days, but buy a dark lens if you are in bright sunlight frequently. Sunglasses should be dark enough to reduce glare, but not dark enough to distort colors.

COLOR: Prevent Blindness America, a volunteer eye health and safety organization, recommends lenses that are neutral gray, amber,

brown or green.

BLUE BLOCKERS: There’s controversy over the possible harm done by blue light, which can be present in the bright glare from snow or water. Lenses that block all blue light are usually amber colored, which is supposed to help you see distant objects more easily.

POLARIZATION: Polarized lenses cut reflected glare and are especially helpful for driving.

PHOTOCHROMICS: A photochromic glass lens automatically darkens in bright light and becomes lighter in low light. These are convenient for people when they switch between indoors and outdoors.

3 tips for surviving with opioids I

f you have recently suffered an injury or gone through a major medical procedure, you may have been prescribed an opioid medication. While effective painkillers, they should also be taken with precaution.

Vicodin and Lortab are two brand names of one of the world's most popular drugs. Hydrocodone/apap is a prescription analgesic and in the category of “opioids,” which you have probably heard about in the news.

Opioids are man-made drugs intended to act similarly to the naturally produced opiates in your body. Opioids bind to the receptor on a cell’s outer membrane and unlock a variety of feel-good, numbing compounds that relax your body, increase pleasure and suppress pain signals.

If you require this medication, here are some important things you should know: 1. Don't quit them cold turkey. If you’ve been using opioids for more than two weeks, stopping suddenly could produce dangerous withdrawal effects. Your body has already grown tolerant to the medication. Gradually step down your dosage so that your cell receptors adapt to the change.

2. Help reduce side effects. Vicodin's number one side effect is constipation. Take a stool softener like docusate to help with the discomfort. I also recommend plenty of water each day and a diet rich in fiber. If that doesn’t help, try an over-the-counter laxative like Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) or a fiber supplement like Metamucil.

But constipation may be the least of your worries. Prolonged opioid use can also cause another lesser-known condition termed “narcotic bowel syndrome” (NBS). This condition causes gastrointestinal hypersensitivity, and often involves getting countless CT scans, abdominal X-rays, MRIs, MRCPs, ultrasounds, endoscopes down your throat and colonoscopies. NBS is characterized by the progressive and somewhat paradoxical increase in abdominal pain despite continued or escalating dosages of narcotics prescribed in an effort to relieve the pain.

3. Never drink alcohol or take sleepers. Opioids are central nervous system (CNS) depressant agents that slow everything down, including respiration. Alcohol does that, too. You should never combine two or more CNS depressants because it could slow your breathing down to the point that it stops completely, resulting in death! Herbal sedatives are also CNS depressants, so do not combine your opioid medication with magnolia bark, skullcap, lavender, California poppy, lemon balm or valerian root, among others.

Opioids are highly addictive. Approximately 21 to 29 percent of patients end up misusing prescribed opioids for pain management. If you have a history of substance or drug abuse and are worried about addiction, ask your doctor to prescribe you a non-opiate painkiller.

n recent years, numerous studies have shown that people who don’t get enough sleep are at greater risk for strokes and heart attacks.

A new University of Colorado Boulder study helps explain why.

It found that people who sleep fewer than seven hours per night have lower blood levels of three physiological regulators, or microRNAs, which influence gene expression and play a key role in maintaining vascular health.

The findings could potentially lead to new, non-invasive tests for sleep-deprived patients concerned about their health, the authors said.

“This study proposes a new potential mechanism through which sleep influences heart health and overall physiology,” said senior author Christopher DeSouza, a professor of Integrative Physiology at University of Colorado at Boulder.

Despite recommendations by the American Heart Association that people get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, about 40 percent of adults in the U.S. fall short.

Overall, the average American’s sleep duration has plummeted from 9 hours to 6.8 hours nightly over the past century.

In another study, DeSouza’s group found that adult men who sleep six hours per night have dysfunctional endothelial cells—the cells that line blood vessels—and their arteries don’t dilate and constrict as well as those who get sufficient sleep. But the underlying factors leading to this dysfunction aren’t well known.

MicroRNAs are small molecules that suppress gene expression of certain proteins in cells. The exact function of circulating microRNAs in the cardiovascular system, and their impact on cardiovascular health, is receiving a lot of scientific

attention. Drugs are currently in development for a variety of diseases, including cancer, to correct impaired microRNA signatures.

For the new study, which is the first to explore the impact of insufficient sleep on circulating microRNA signatures, DeSouza and his team took blood samples from 24 healthy men and women, age 44 to 62, who had filled out questionnaires about their sleep habits. Half slept 7 to 8.5 hours nightly; half slept 5 to 6.8 hours nightly.

They measured the expression of nine microRNAs previously associated with inflammation, immune function or vascular health.

The study found that people with insufficient sleep had 40 to 60 percent lower circulating levels of miR-125A, miR-126, and miR-146a, than those who slept enough.

“Why seven or eight hours seems to be the magic number is unclear,” said DeSouza. “However, it is plausible that people need at least seven hours of sleep per night to maintain levels of important physiological regulators.”

Research is now underway in DeSouza’s lab to determine whether restoring healthy sleep habits can restore healthy levels of microRNAs. Ultimately, he said, it’s possible that microRNAs in blood could be used as a marker of cardiovascular disease in people with insufficient sleep, enabling doctors to glean important information via a blood test rather than current, more invasive tests.

For now, DeSouza's message for those burning the midnight oil is this: “Don’t underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep.”

E

very October 31 we see suburban homes displaying fat orange pumpkins aglow with light pouring through triangular eyes and jagged teeth. They stand guard over the house, ready to ward off whatever evil spirits might be lurking about.

It’s a good thing that those silent sentinels are on duty. After all, one of those spirits just might be Stingy Jack.

Jack's story starts out in ancient Irish mythology. In the tale, the blacksmith in one particular village was a notorious drunk who lied, cheated, played pranks, manipulated people and did what he could to avoid spending his money. Locals called him Jack the Smith to his face but Stingy Jack behind his back.

According to legend, Lucifer heard of Jack’s vile reputation and decided to seek out the rascal for himself. When the Devil met Jack, this con artist invited him to the town tavern for a drink. True to his name, Jack claimed to be broke when the drinking was done. The wily scoundrel then convinced Satan to turn himself into a coin so Jack could settle the evening’s tab. The bemused Devil took on the requested shape, and Jack slipped the coin into his coat pocket— right next to a silver crucifix. The cross

the legend of the Jack o’ lantern kept Satan from shifting back to his original form. Jack then slipped out of the tavern without paying the bill.

Jack eventually let Lucifer loose, but only after making him promise not to bother him for one year and not to claim the blacksmith’s soul when he died.

Jack was still up to his usual machinations one year later. When the Devil came to collect the reprobate’s soul, Jack begged for a single last request: a juicy red apple.

While Lucifer was climbing a nearby tree, Jack hurriedly carved the sign of the cross into the tree’s trunk. As a result, the Devil couldn’t

return to solid ground until he promised once more to leave Jack alone—this time for a full decade.

Predictably, Jack wasted the next 10 years drinking, causing problems and annoying people.

When he finally died and met St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, the good saint turned him away, convinced that God wouldn’t want such a miserable hunk of humanity in Heaven.

And when Jack turned up at the gates of Hell, Satan, who was still smarting from the tricks Jack had pulled on him earlier, refused to admit him into Hades. After all, the Devil smugly maintained, that had been part of their original bargain.

The Devil sent Jack off into the night to “find his own hell” in the dark and mysterious netherworld.

The hapless penny pincher stumbled into the darkness, his path dimly lit by a single burning chunk of coal that the Devil had given to him to create a makeshift lantern.

Jack plucked a turnip from the ground, carved an opening in it and placed the ember inside. Ever since that night, Stingy Jack has been roaming the Earth, finding neither peace nor resting place.

The Irish began referring to his ghostly figure as “Jack of the lantern,” which was eventually shortened to “Jack o’ lantern.”

In Ireland, then later in Scotland and England, people began replicating Jack’s lantern by carving scary faces into turnips, potatoes, gourds and beets. Eventually, migrants brought the Irish tradition of Stingy Jack to America. It was here that newly arrived folks found that pumpkins, which were native to America, made perfect Jack o’ lanterns.

Today, the Stingy Jack legend has taken a back seat to costumes, candy and Charlie Brown cartoons at Halloween. However, that doesn’t mean that the creepy codger isn’t still wandering about in the darkness somewhere. Maybe even in your own neighborhood. ■

Submitted by Bob Breazeale Tom is a young man who is fascinated with the rodeo, especially bull riding. He knows that there is an old man in town that used to ride bulls. That's how he became crippled.

Tom goes into town and sees the old man sitting in a rocking chair with a cane across his lap in front of the general store. Tom asks the man, “Are you the guy who used to ride bulls?”

The old man replies, “Yup.” Tom asks, “Would you teach me how to ride bulls?”

The old man tips his hat back and looks Tom up and down and then says, “I guess so.”

Tom asks, “What do I have to do?”

The old man says, “First you need to go into the general store and buy a bag of marbles.”

After Tom comes back with the marbles, the old man says, “Now slip one up under your hatband. Every time you get on a bull, you put your marble under your hatband.

When that bull throws you, and you go flying one way and your hat goes another way, you get up, put your hat back on and slip another marble under your hatband and get back on another bull. And you keep doing that.”

Tom asks, “Then what?”

The old man leans back in his chair, slides his hat over his eyes and folds his arms across his chest as if to go to sleep. Then he gets

a big smile on his face and says, “Then, Sonny, after you've lost all your marbles, you'll be a bull rider.”

ou already know that nothing compares to freshly picked produce. It’s part of what makes this time of year so bittersweet. We’re munching on final harvests, maybe even digging into our homemade canned tomato sauces and dried peaches.

But we know it’s coming: winter, aka grocery store season.

Let’s face it: Our bodies know the difference between a tomato just off the vine and one that tried to ripen in a truck on its way from Mexico. Here are a few tricks to bringing your garden indoors.

Choose plants you love. Grow herbs that you love to cook with or make tea out of. If you’re growing your favorite plants, chances are you’ll be willing to put in the extra effort that potted plants require.

Grow lettuce and other leafy greens from seed. Set up a rotational system—a long, trough-like pot works well and fits nicely on windowsills. You can also use four separate pots and apply the same technique.

First, divide your planting area into four sections, planting the next section each time. Scatter seeds throughout the section and keep the soil moist. You can use a wet cheesecloth to help keep the soil moist as the seeds germinate.

Harvest and eat baby greens daily to slowly thin out the young plants, giving them more space as they grow. After a few weeks, you’ll have a system established that gives you fresh greens every day!

Start with clean, high-quality, natural potting soil, preferably with slow-releasing organic fertiliz-

ers mixed in. Of course, start with healthy plant starters. Since potted plants can’t rely on larger ecosystems for nourishment, consider adding natural and organic fertilizers, compost or vermicompost (worm poop).

Air circulation is another gift of Nature you may need to actively provide for your plants. Turning on a fan or opening a window on a warmer day once in a while will keep your plants (and your body) happy. Keep the soil moist but welldrained, and pay attention to the changes in lighting that happen over winter.

If a goal of gardening is to become more empowered and self-sufficient by growing our own food, we have to expand the boundaries of our gardens: into schools and community spaces, into conversations, and into the colder months of the year.

As gardeners moving our gardens indoors, and as conscious consumers, we can take steps toward supporting, building and benefiting from a healthier food system.

Bringing Hope to Africa HopeWest’s sister hospice center cares for Tanzanian medical needs

opeWest’s palliative care duties aren’t solely limited to the Western Slope. Ten years ago, HopeWest partnered with Ilembula Palliative Care in Tanzania through Global Partners in Care. The partnership’s goal is to provide compassion and end-of-life relief to seriously ill patients and their families on a global scale, with American hospices providing programmatic support, financial aid and technical assistance to their African counterparts.

A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP For the past several years, Western Slope volunteer hospice workers have flown over 25 hours to take medical, nutritional and educational

supplies to the Ilembula Lutheran Hospital as part of the HopeWest Africa Partnership. The town of Ilembula has a population of around 18,000 Tanzanians, most living in below-poverty conditions. The Tanzanian multi-purpose facility includes a clinic, an orphanage, and medical and end-of-life care for patients and their families.

Beth Brown, 57, director of palliative care at HopeWest, has made three trips to Africa through this partnership. Each trip, HopeWest volunteers fill suitcases full of vitamins, nonprescription pain medication, stomach medication and anti-diarrheal medication. They also pack medical supplies such as blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes and

dressings. These and other supplies brought over, such as sleeping mats and mosquito netting, are funded by donations.

“We’ve tried to ship supplies but they get ‘lost’ before they reach the hospital,” Brown said.

The Ilembulan palliative care team consists of a social worker, chaplain and a certified nursing assistant. A physician’s assistant also oversees and tracks visits, volunteers and manages the funding and administrative oversight. Visits include a hospital tour, updates from previous visits, home visits, and a daycare that provides children with medical support, nutritional education and illness prevention.

home with supplies for their family, usually a bag of sugar and a bar of soap.

Providing additional training is another aspect of HopeWest’s visits. In 2015 a HopeWest counselor led a grief support group at the children’s daycare and conducted a presentation on grief issues with the hospital’s physicians and staff. Fundraising has also enabled Tanzanian staff to receive additional training and attend conferences.

Malaria, TB, parasitic diseases and HIV AIDS infect thousands of Tanzanians. HopeWest volunteers visited 4,874 male and 10,525 female HIV clients in 2018. Even though the Tanzanian government provides some funds to prevent the spread of AIDS, including free medications, there isn’t enough to treat everyone.

Patients nearing the end of life have no resources to deal with their pain, and only one registered nurse is qualified to administer morphine. HopeWest volunteers traveled miles to bring food and support, with one local volunteer overseeing 50 patients. HopeWest also raised money to provide bicycles and rain boots so volunteers can reach patients and don’t have to slog barefoot through footdeep mud.

Despite these setbacks Tanzanians don’t see themselves as victims.

Instead, they rely on their community, putting others first and themselves last. When a villager is sick or hungry, the rest take on the task of sharing food and caring for the ill.

While the Tanzanians seem poor by Western standards, their care for each other as a group and sense of community fosters an overall sense of hope and happiness.

“They’re smart but just don’t have the resources,” Brown said.

One thing Brown stressed is the need to eradicate diseases, or at least manage them. When overseas, Brown is even more conscious of the necessity of meticulous hand washing and other preventive measures.

“We ask how we can help prevent diseases. If we don’t help stop diseases they’ll migrate here. One trip was canceled because of an ebola outbreak,” she explained.

Global poverty, disease and destitution may seem like big tasks to take on for the partnership. But for Brown and the other volunteers, changing lives for the better means taking that first step of support, and then another and another. ■ HopeWest has a funding goal of $10,000 each year. his year marks the 100th anniversary of Orvis Hot Springs.

But not many people remember the varied history of the place or the family behind the name.

The Ute Indians were the first to use the Uncompahgre Hot Springs, located on reservation land near Ridgway. Translated, Uncompahgre means “hot water.” Today this water warms the 100-year-old Orvis Hot Springs, a public spa visited by thousands year-round.

The spa’s origins date back to when Sarah Jarvis Orvis and her first husband, A.H. “Billy” Jarvis, squatted on reservation land in 1876. They subsequently claimed the hot springs as part of their ranch, which was such prime property that it had to be defended against claim jumpers, who reportedly tried to slip onto the property in the guise of mailmen.

Billy died in 1879. In 1882, Sarah remarried to Lewis Orvis Sr. and they continued to live on the ranch.

In 1881, local Indians were forc-

ibly moved to Utah and the couple was eventually given a government patent to the land. The Utes continued to use the hot springs but were unhappy with Orvis’ ownership of the land.

Sarah recalled in her latter years that Ute leader Chipeta was particularly bitter about the encroachment of the white people.

“The Orvis ranch was always popular with Indians because of the hot springs. The [Indians] always stopped there to bathe and dance when they were in the country,” Sarah said in a 1934 interview.

Native Americans from Manitou to Ignacio knew of and used the spring.

THE ORVIS PLUNGE

In 1919, Lewis, Sarah and Lewis’ son opened the Orvis Plunge, an enclosed swimming pool. They piped extremely hot water, about 127 degrees Fahrenheit, from the spring to the pool and cooled it to a comfortable temperature. At the time, the construction of the pool and enclosure cost $1,500.

Eventually, other improvements were added, including a fishing lake and a clubhouse. All that remains of the clubhouse today is the fireplaces.

In 1933 they sold Orvis Plunge. It had a succession of various owners until it fell into disrepair in the early 1950s when the roof caved in and the building was badly damaged. In 1961, a fire destroyed what remained.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Lois and Paul Witt constructed the current building and ran a chiropractic practice for a number of years. The building continued to change hands until Jeff Kerbel bought the property and received permission from the Orvis family to call his business Orvis Hot Springs.

He started the clothing-optional rule, which was continued by the next owner, Jack Cosgrove.

In 2005, the Orvis family reacquired the business, now run by Kenneth Orvis.

The Orvis Hot Springs today looks totally different from the 1919 Orvis Plunge. A decorative wall encloses five pools of varying water temperature. A horticulturist on staff maintains ornamental flowers and bushes along paving stone walkways that discretely accent the pools. Clothing is still optional—one of the requirements when Kenneth brought the business back into the family. The modern Orvis Hot Springs also includes an indoor pool and two private tubs. ■

amily history. Artistry. Farm life.

Bursts of color. Tradition. Community. Creativity. I saw all of this represented in the wooden quilts displayed on the sides of almost five dozen barns in Tualatin Valley, Oregon. The combination of personal history and rural tradition that finds voice in these quilt blocks brings to life customs, folklore and artistic expression emblematic of the entire valley.

WHAT IS A QUILT BARN? Imagine an 8x8-feet pattern of painted wooden blocks representing actual quilt designs, displayed on the exterior of barn doors.

These so-called “quilt barns” represent an agricultural heritage, providing a connection each family has to the quilt and that the quilt has to their history.

The quilt blocks are as diverse as the farms and farmers to which they belong. Farmers may choose a

particular pattern based on a favorite quilt, farm crop or animal. Often the patterns reflect their personal family history, a kinship to a natural element or are simply chosen for their appealing color combination.

THE OREGON QUILT TRAIL Julie Mason, a quilter herself, was inspired by the Quilt Barn Trail in the Midwest. In 2012, she introduced the concept of a quilt barn to her local quilters’ guild in Oregon. They rallied behind the idea, and just seven years later 60 quilt barns emerged throughout the Tualatin Valley.

The “Hovering Hawks” block on the Simpson Century Farm—a farm that’s more than 100 years old and has been inhabited by the same family—was the first block to go up in December 2014. The farm is now the staging area where, under the watchful eye of owner Bev Hess, all of the quilt blocks are built, painted and assembled. Each block is an arduous, labor-intensive task fully

Inception to installation takes about six to eight weeks, and the quilters’ guild works closely with each farm owner on design, colors and concept. Hess’ own choice reflects an old quilt design from the Oregon Trail that also pays homage to the many hawks that inhabit the farmland.

maps of directions is still a work in progress. I mainly traveled along the Forest Grove route, visiting a variety of visually delightful, colorful and meaningful quilt barn participants. Designs ranged from a windmill paying tribute to the farm owner’s Dutch heritage to a covered wagon celebrating the family’s ancestor who traveled the treacherous Oregon Trail.

grandmother. The Blooming Farm, built in 1882, sports a sunflower block that commemorates their favorite flower growing in their garden.

The Walta Farm displays a classic block of green and yellow that colorfully suggests the sweet corn and green beans grown on the farm. The 1930s barn on the Rohrer property honors the six tribes of Native Americans who made their home near the site.

The beautiful blue star design at the L Bar T Bison Ranch celebrates quilts developed by women who crossed the Oregon Trail. Finally, the Spiesschaert Farm quilt block commemorates the owners’ greatgrandfather who came to Oregon from Illinois via the Oregon Trail in 1884. Their 100-year-old barn even houses the original Conestoga wagon that carried three adults and seven children across the trail!

In case you tire of gawking at pretty barn doors, countless vineyards and fruit orchards line the rural routes.

Plum Hill is one such quilt barn that shares its home with a vineyard.

The quilt block itself is a traditional pattern often used in quilts given as wedding gifts and aptly named Double Wedding Ring, a favorite of the farm’s co-owner and quilter Juanita Lint. The wines also proved to be a favorite of mine, especially the white made from the Schönburger grape. Plum Hill is the only winery in the U.S. to grow this grape. If you have time, join Lint on an intimate, hands-on wine-making tour at its most primitive level with everything done by hand.

Driving away from Tualatin Valley, I wasn’t surprised to see other quilt barns peeking through the trees beckoning us to return again to this Oregon quilt barn trail.

ow, how the time flies! It seems like just yesterday that we were entering springtime and now, here we are in the fall season.

By the time you read this, Color Sunday will have passed and we will be watching the trees here in the valley slowly change from green to yellow, and then to red or gold.

Each season has its own beauty.

Spring, with all its freshness and promise, gives way to summer.

Summer, with all its activity and production, gives way to fall. And finally, fall, with its colorful changes and harvest, gives way to winter.

Winter is the final season of the year, but it too has its own beauty.

The snow on the mountaintops is just stunning, as is the freshness that comes with new snow here in the valley.

The differences of the seasons are most obvious in nature. In the spring and summer, all is business— production and reproduction.

Growing and learning are all part of these first two seasons. In the fall, the harvest is near. It’s a time of reaping the fruit of our labors.

So it is, too, with our lives. In the spring of our lives, there is so much promise, freshness and vitality.

Planning for the future, education, choosing a spouse—these are all a part of our youth and early adulthood. Then comes summer.

Our minds begin to turn to family: raising our kids, advancing in our chosen line of work. Our lives are consumed with building for the future. We are busy with long hours of work and focused on achievement.

When we come into the fall and winter seasons of our lives, we begin to slow down a bit. Our kids are grown. No need to rush

anymore. We begin to prepare for entering retirement. We have newfound wisdom to dispense to a younger generation. Someone once said we spend the first half of our lives wondering what we can build and gain, and we spend the last half wondering what we can leave behind. I agree.

As a Christian, even though I’m in the fall and even entering the winter season of my life, I still feel I have purpose. Even though we might not accomplish what we did in our younger years, we still have much to give. We’ve seen a lot of things. We have wisdom to offer.

And we have time. Such a precious commodity!

Since retiring three years ago, I have more time for ministry and investing in others. And I’m enjoying every minute of it! I get up in the morning full of hope for the future. I’m ready to make a difference in my world. Sure, I get tired.

But at the end of each day, I know that I’ve been a part of something God is doing, and that makes me feel good.

We have a whole society that needs what we have to give. How tragic it would be if all that we’ve learned we kept to ourselves.

So, I want to encourage my fellow seniors to ask God what he has for you in this season. Then follow through with it. I’d much rather have God say I did too much when my days are ended than to hear Him rebuke me for the things I didn’t do. The Bible commands us to work while the day is here. There is so much opportunity out there!

Let’s seize the moment. ■

Social media: How to navigate the new Wild West A

friend recently asked me if I knew of any resources that could help her mom understand the code of the new Wild West— the vast social media frontier.

In a frontier community, there are a lot of down-to-earth folks who mind their own business.

There are friendly types who host parties for socializing and fraternizing, but also people who just try to start fights and two-faced gossips who eavesdrop and sensationalize any goings-on they are privy to.

The code of the social media frontier serves the same purpose as the code of the West: to keep you safe from sharpshooting villains, snake oil shysters, gossips, and seasonal twisters. The bustling railroad towns of the Wild West often had a sheriff, but that didn’t stop ruffians from causing a ruckus in town. Nor did it stop shady land deals, robberies, or snake oil salesmen from deceiving the townsfolks.

If citizens wanted to stay safe, they had to follow some unwritten rules to avoid trouble. These are almost identical to the rules you

would follow in the wild frontier of social media.

Rule No. 1: Don’t trust strangers Social media often refers to those you are connected with on the internet frontier as “friends” or “followers.” However, you should apply the same rules on Facebook as you do to acquaintances in the real world.

If a stranger wants you to connect with them for no reason, be careful. This rule applies even if the new acquaintance knows some of your friends or he/she went to the same high school you did.

Rule No. 2: If a deal is too good to be true, it always is There’s a new doctor in town and he’s brought an elixir from the mystical Orient that cures cancer, baldness and dry mouth. Of course, the remedy isn’t cheap, but you can’t put a price on good health and fortune.

Just as you’d avoid this physician and his solutions in the Old West, you should steer clear of anyone making promises on

social media. Facebook and similar platforms are fundamentally built on networks of people. Schemers and shady evildoers take advantage of this structure by pawning hoax wares and services by tapping into your personal network of social media connections.

Rule No. 3: Maintain true grit Some folks are afraid of showing backbone around town because they don’t want their caution to be misinterpreted as prejudice or pessimism. Unfortunately, bad guys love to take advantage of the trust of strangers. In the modern social media frontier, this process is referred to as social engineering.

Crafty bad guys will do their best to convince you that they are not strangers. In many cases, they will gain your trust by counterfeiting the account of a close friend or family member by duplicating his

or her name, photos and status updates. When you receive a connection request from someone you are already connected to, this is typically what is happening. It’s a scheme bad guys use to trick you into letting them into your network. You can both block and report them.

Cunning social media bad guys will often encourage you to visit a website or sign up for a free product or service so that they can gather your private information and log into your bank account or use your debit card without your consent.

Using caution is essential to safety and survival on this new frontier.

Don’t feel bad for being cautious or suspicious. That’s just part of following the code of the frontier. ■

elcome to age 65, and the Medicare system! Now you can sit back, relax, and know that you’ll be taken care of no matter what happens.

You can dream, but if you’ve already crossed this important threshold, you know that’s not the reality. When you’re tapping into government benefits, it pays to know the terms. Before you schedule your first visit, know the difference between the Welcome to Medicare visit, the Annual Wellness Visit and a physical exam.

WELCOME TO MEDICARE VISIT Under original Medicare, the Welcome to Medicare visit is a one-time visit covered by Medicare Part B with the goal to promote general health and help prevent diseases. It is not necessarily a physical examination at all but instead focuses on creating a baseline health assessment by checking vital stats and health history.

Medicare does not pay for the type of comprehensive exam that most people think of as a physical.

But it does cover a one-time Welcome to Medicare checkup during

your first year after enrolling in Part B and, later on, the Annual Wellness visit intended to keep track of your health.

Here’s what to expect from the Welcome to Medicare visit: • Intake: height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, vision.

• Review: health history including medical, social and emotional.

• Education: discuss navigating safely as you age, counseling and referrals as necessary.

• Plan: goals and plans for the future, including info on other preventive services.

The visit has no copay or deductible as long as you see a participating provider who will charge no more than the Medicare-approved amount. That means you should verify with your doctor’s office at the time you make the appointment to be sure she or he is a participating provider. If not, you will have to decide whether to change doctors or pay out of pocket.

To make sure you are not charged for the appointment, request the Welcome to Medicare visit or the Annual Wellness Visit— not a physical. Conversely, if you want a full physical examination,

FINANCE request that and be ready to pay for it.

ANNUAL WELLNESS VISIT After Welcome to Medicare is your Annual Wellness visit. If you have no intervening issues, you would schedule this appointment for a year after your welcome visit, and each year following.

The content is similar, where intake stats are measured and compared to the values at your Welcome to Medicare visit. They’ll review your health history, looking especially for changes in health or cognitive impairment. Some screenings may be ordered periodically, such as lipid blood panel for cholesterol (5 years), colorectal cancer screenings (12-120 months) and mammogram (annual). The visit may also include a discussion of advanced care planning, encouraging you to prepare for the possibility of not being able to care for yourself.

The Annual Wellness visit is covered under Medicare Part B with no deductible unless your Medicare-approved provider orders a test or screening that is not part of the annual benefit. In that case, you

may be subject to whatever copays and deductibles come with the plan you purchased.

If in the course of your exam an issue arises that needs diagnosis or treatment, these may involve extra charges. Just as before your Medicare days, these are subject to various deductibles and copays.

If you have a Medigap (supplemental Medicare) or Medicare Advantage plan, some or all of these costs may be covered. It is generally a good idea to buy the best Medicare supplemental plan that you can afford from the beginning. If your health fails later, you may not be able to qualify for the plans with the best coverage.

It’s important to be informed and discerning about your own health. While medical professionals help monitor our state of health and nip big problems in the bud, remember that self-care is the most important factor in health and longevity. Daily exercise is a great way to practice self-care. If scheduling exercise is difficult for you, at least make a practice of taking the farthest space in the parking lot for your doctor’s office! ■

lenty of people enjoy drinking a beer from time to time, especially around the Oktoberfest season. But how many can say they’ve made one?

Fortunately for Grand Valley beer-enthusiasts, Mesa County’s only homebrew club meets on Main Street in downtown Grand Junction.

It all started with a small group of people—mainly teachers from Bookcliff Middle School—forming a homebrew club. Now just over five years later, the Bookcliff Home Brew Club boasts 45 members.

About a third of the local brewers are in the 50 and older crowd,

including club vice president Darrel Landini and treasurer Wayne McMacken.

“It’s the best hobby in the world, with the best people in the world,” Landini said.

A BREW FOR EVERYONE Club members range in age from early 20s to 70s, sporting a wide range of interests and brewing experience. What they all have in common is their love of the craft, the camaraderie the club provides and, of course, drinking the results of their brewing.

brewing all kinds of fermentable beverages. Brewers will experiment with different kinds of hard ciders as well as some unique styles of ales and meads. Most of the members enjoy making two or more types of brewed beverages.

Brewing isn’t a hobby solely for men, either. In fact, the club created the Brewnettes—a ladies-only group of brewers—to encourage more women to get involved.

“The Brewnettes...was formed to create a safe space where women can meet and learn about home brewing without feeling intimidated by the male presence,” Landini explained.

Most members of the Brewnettes have eventually become members of the original homebrew club.

IT’S BEER TIME! The Bookcliff Home Brew Club has been active since its founding, hosting regular club events in addition to its monthly meetings.

Come see how beer is made on open brew days, where anyone can come participate in brewing or simply observe the process. The club also hosts the quarterly Cup Series, a contest where brews are judged by popular vote. The next one will be held on October 2 at the Rockslide Brewery at 6:30 p.m.

Last year the club became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a focus on community education.

They now offer classes to members and people in the community that include how to brew different

beverages, how to recognize the sensory aspects of the beverages including the off-flavors beer class, and how to judge home brews.

As a member of the Beer Judging Certification Program (BJCP) and the American Home Brewers Association (AHA), the local club plans on offering a series of BJCP beer judging classes that would teach the science of judging beer, training participants to become an AHA certified beer competition judge. This includes judging sample tastings to determine the best beer.

CLUB PERKS In addition to regular classes and events, the homebrew club also offers a brew equipment “lending library” which beginners just learning the craft can use for their brewing.

“A card-carrying member has special benefits, including discounts with some of the liquor stores, Little Ole Winemaker, some of the breweries and High Country Gas,” McMaken said.

Beyond the financial benefits, members find a sense of belonging, community and the satisfaction of making a great homebrew.

McMaken and Landini encourage anyone who would like to learn more about the Bookcliff Home Brew Club, and brewing in general, to check out their monthly club socials held the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Rockslide Brewery. hawn Conners doesn’t sleep in a tie, but there are times when it would be helpful.

As manager at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary & Crematory, Conners never knows when he’ll get the call to meet a family following the death of a loved one. But when he does, even in the middle of the night, he makes sure to look professional.

“It’s 24/7, 365 days a year. But there is a lot of reward in helping people,” Conners said.

He and colleagues Gary Blackburn and Gary S. Blackburn, a father and son team, handle burials and cremations at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. The eldest Blackburn has worked there for 35 years.

Dressing the part is just a small gesture the men do to give families peace of mind and reassure them that their deceased loved ones are in courteous, competent hands.

“Callahan has always been honest and upfront with people,” said Blackburn Sr. Families can expect full disclosure of all prices for services. The three men make sure to treat every friend and family member of the deceased with the utmost care, regardless of their financial situation.

These core values have been at the heart of Callahan-Edfast since it opened in 1910.

Nowadays, Callahan-Edfast is a full-service mortuary offering burial and on-site cremation. Services can be held in the mortuary’s chapel or off site. Either way, the staff at Callahan-Edfast will handle the details.

Cremation makes up 75 percent of the mortuary’s business, which Connors attributed to its lower cost and convenience. Family members have the option of witnessing the cremation. Callahan-Edfast will also hold cremated remains for up to

A funeral followed by an inground burial, on the other hand, needs to be done on a more accelerated timetable but remains the preferred choice for some.

Making the decision about cremation or burial may be uncomfortable, but there are people who find solace in verbalizing their

choice—and even paying for it— prior to death. It isn’t uncommon for Conners or the Blackburns to meet with individuals and/or family members before a death occurs to make plans and finalize decisions.

They suggest people do so if they have the time and desire.

or some families, music just seems to run in their blood.

For the Wolaver family, it started with great-grandma Annie Moses.

During the Great Depression, Moses scrimped and saved the money she made from picking cotton for a wealthy landowner in Texas to pay for piano lessons for her daughter, Jane. Her daughter, in turn, pinched pennies to give her granddaughter, Robin, lessons.

Raised on “no-grass” hillbilly music, Robin followed her musical passion to Oklahoma City University where she met jazzman, Bill Wolaver. The two married, and classical music became the background of their children’s upbringing. When the siblings grew older and wanted to start a band, great-grandma Annie was their inspiration.

A MODERN VON TRAPP FAMILY The six siblings and their friends— a group of dedicated musicians—all studied music from a young age. In fact, three of the siblings even went on to attend Juilliard. However, in 2002 the oldest daughter and leader Annie Wolaver Dupre wanted to take the next step: performance.

“We found that we were practicing for hours, but not performing much at all. So we started experimenting with our own music and playing coffee shops and small venues for fun,” Annie said.

When choosing their band name, the only logical option was to honor their great-grandma. The Annie Moses Band began touring that summer and have never looked back.

BEACON SENIOR NEWS Alex contributes the viola when he’s not managing the band, and Ben joins in on the cello. Violinist Gretchen writes songs and joins Annie as a vocalist, and Jeremiah, the youngest at 21, rocks out on the acoustic and electric guitars and also adds vocals. Sister Camille is currently on a break to have her third child, but she adds a tone wheel organ and harp to the sound when she joins the band.

The band’s sound reflects the family’s unusual blend of roots music and classical polish in its dozen albums. Their unique music has led them to travel to Europe and Asia, and perform on stages as diverse as Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

SPREADING THE LOVE OF MUSIC The group does more than just entertain audiences. In 2010, they created the Annie Moses Foundation to nurture artistic development in families. The nonprofit foundation supports the local music conservatory, online music curricula, and presents an annual summer music festival in Nashville, which hosts over 125 young performers who travel there from all over the U.S. and beyond.

M

usic is huge part of Betty Rosenwald’s spiritual life. It kept her spirits up when she was down, brought her closer to God and still brings her great joy.

Her musical journey began during the most challenging years of her life. In 1995, Rosenwald came down with acute chronic fatigue syndrome and was in bed for two years. During this difficult time, she turned to music.

“It’s then that I started writing music based on scripture,” said Rosenwald, 76. “I believe the Lord was calling me to do this. It blessed me a lot and I thought eventually I would be able to share it with others and bless them as well.”

With piano and organ lessons already under her belt, she furthered her learning using a Washington State University music theory book and a year’s worth of lessons from jazz pianist Steve Haberman.

“He not only taught me the chords, but to free myself up from the structure of music,” said Rosenwald. “I learned to improvise.”

By the summer of 2018 she had written the music and lyrics for 150 songs using the computer program MuseScore, but was still seeking a way to share them.

“I wanted to record my songs and originally thought I would learn to run the recording equipment and find someone to do the singing,” said Rosenwald. “I even took the introductory class at the library’s 970West Studio three times but decided it was too much for me.”

Her patience and persistence paid off. Knowing Rosenwald had written many songs, the music director at First Presbyterian Church suggested having one of them sung in church. He specifically recommended Jennifer Hemenway, a 21-year-old recent Colorado Mesa University voice major graduate for

BEACON SENIOR NEWS the vocals. The two women sang in the same church choir but weren’t personally acquainted beforehand.

After performing her original piece, Rosenwald approached Hemenway about the possibility of recording her music.

“I already knew my way around the equipment through school and knew it would be a fun, educational experience,” said Hemenway. “I needed a break from the demanding music major schedule.”

She loves the fact that she’s able to record, edit and sing, despite being told that most vocal students won’t get a job in the field right out of college.

To date, Rosenwald and Hemenway have finished recording their first CD and are working on a second. Rosenwald already has the songs picked out for a third CD. “I want the fourth to be a special music CD including Christmas, Easter and wedding songs I’ve written,” said Rosenwald.

Hemenway plans on being in the Grand Valley another year, which she said is plenty of time to finish the project. Rosenwald’s reflective and meditative scripture-inspired songs have been printed in book form, for which she is looking for a publisher.

Both women have found 970West Studio to be an outstanding location and space to record.

While other studios can charge up to $80 an hour, 970West is free with a Mesa County library card. It also has a terrific staff that offers

free classes on music recording and editing as well as computer basics, videography, PowerPoint and more.

Rosenwald and Hemenway book four-hour sessions two to three times a week, in addition to working at home refining and practicing.

They rehearse each song in the studio several times before doing multiple takes separately, recording the voice and piano on separate tracks. Hemenway then edits the best of these and puts them on the final CD. “Recording the second CD has been so much easier than the first,” said Hemenway. “Every time we do this it just keeps getting better and better.”

Not only are their recording efforts getting tighter, so is their relationship. They dine together frequently, and Hemenway enjoys having Rosenwald as her go-to person now.

“Jennifer has a beautiful voice.

It’s been a dream of mine to share my music and she’s made that possible,” said Rosenwald. “It’s not random that we were brought together—God’s hand was in this. I just love her and she’s like a daughter to me now.” ■

The dramas dealt with paranormal, futuristic, or otherwise unusual or disturbing events, with the characters involved having crossed over into the surreal “Twilight Zone.”

In reality, though, he still had to frequently fight for creative control, as his scripts incorporated his views on current events and social concerns such as war, racism, mass hysteria, politics and gender issues.

And even though his messages were cleverly veiled within the fantasy and science fiction parameters of the show’s programs, they still managed to make some viewers squirm.

Selected artists will work with library staff to provide at least three library programs during the residency and must occupy the studio at least six hours per week for community engagement.

Artists selected for residencies will receive a $500 stipend from the Mesa County Libraries Foundation, access to the 245-square-foot Artist in Residence space in the 970West Studio, and a resource guide containing information about local and statewide art opportunities and professional development resources. My son meets "The Fly"

“C

ome on, son, watch this movie with me.”

“Meh.” “Seriously. It’s very scary. It’ll get you into the mood for Halloween.”

My son looks at me with a somewhat more than skeptical eye.

“You’ve said that before. Remember (title of film redacted)?”

I look down and remember that disaster. Wow. When I was a kid, that movie scared the daylights out of me. But when an opportunity arose to watch it again on cable TV (with my son), I see that what scared me as a youth left me confused, bewildered and outright embarrassed as an adult. And my son was none too pleased with having wasted an hour and a half watching a corny movie, with corny acting and laughable special effects.

“This….is different,” I say somewhat timidly. I play the guilt card.

“You know, when I was your age, my dad was already dead. I’d have given anything to watch a scary movie with him…”

“All right, all right,” he says with frustration.

Giddily, I lead him to the living room and explain to him how this movie totally creeped me out as a kid. After the popcorn was popped, we settled in to watch the 1958 version of "The Fly." My son’s skepticism in my movie choices is not unfounded. On more than one occasion I have guilted him into watching some TV show or movie that was special to me when I was a kid. Far more often than not, we both went away from the movie disillusioned.

Were my tastes in film really that bad? Or did things change over the years? I think the answer is mostly the latter.

In the past, most movies reflected life as it was back then. A hero saves a damsel. Many (but not all) of those movies were sexist and offensive to modern sensibilities.

Interestingly, the ones that have aged well don’t usually follow those patterns. They were different back then, and have consequently come into their own now.

So as I sat down with my son to watch Vincent Price in "The Fly," I thought about that. Here, the heroic scientist has made some awful decisions and has gotten himself into something of a pickle, to say the least. I won’t give away any spoilers, but the scientist turns to his wife for assistance. Unfortunately, he asks the nearly impossible and only gives her a short time to complete the task, after which he decides on a drastic solution.

It had been decades since I have watched "The Fly" myself, but as I did I thought about how well the movie had aged. The scientist’s wife was strong and capable. The males around her were condescending and protective. In the end, they saw, to their horror, that she was right all along.

“Hey,” my son piped in during the film, “This movie is pretty good.”

And it hadn’t even got to the best part yet. If you have seen the movie, you know what I’m talking about.

To this day, if I am doing something that requires my son’s assistance, I will mimic the movie and say “heeelp meeeee…” to him. In the past, he always thought that I was just weird and I never bothered explaining where that came from.

But finally, THAT scene came on.

“Oh, wow,” my son said quietly, “So THAT’S why you do that.”

After the movie was over, he remarked how much he enjoyed the film. “Ok, Dad. You made up for (title of film redacted).”

“Thanks,” I say, accepting the unusually high praise. “You know, Turner Classic Movies is playing The Music Man, which is a great music…”

“Dad. Stop. Just stop.” ■
