I had the best apples of my life last month at Cedaredge Apple Fest. Who knew that this little town of just over 2,000 people could grow this exemplary product of nature’s goodness and make them taste so delicious?

Alec Williams shares the story of She Has a Name, a Grand Junction-based nonprofit that changes the lives of young women in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

It was my first time attending the festival, which proved to be much bigger than I expected. I’ve lived on the Western Slope for 15 years, and I still stumble upon these gems. There’s certainly no shortage of natural wonders on this side of the state, which I’m incredibly grateful for.

These stories have themes based on gratitude, even though the writer may not have sat down with that direction in mind.

Veterans on the MOVE!

It was the day he joined the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center’s MOVE! program—a decision that radically changed his life for the better.

W

eighing 353 pounds when he started, Wheeler felt constantly exhausted. He suffered from severe knee pain and couldn’t tie his shoes. In just over a year after joining MOVE!, he dropped 127 pounds and 36 percent of his body weight, closing in on his goal of 190.

“Just like the program’s name, the key is to move,” said Wheeler, 69, who no longer experiences pain and keeps up his progress by walking for 30 minutes twice a day.

“You can’t lose weight just sitting around.”

SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS

Veterans nationwide are seeing astounding results through MOVE!, a program developed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to

address weight and weight-related health issues by focusing on healthy eating, physical activity and behavioral changes.

“The purpose of the MOVE! program is to treat the disease of obesity,” said registered dietitian and local MOVE! Program Coordinator Melissa Klemp.

The VA reports that 80 percent of veterans are overweight or obese, putting them at risk for health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, joint and back pain, sleep deprivation, PTSD and cancer.

According to Klemp, physical exercise contributes to 20 percent of weight loss while 80 percent is due to nutrition and what we eat.

These 16-week sessions cover a variety of topics, including how to read nutrition facts, maintaining a food and activity log, how to prepare healthy meals and snacks, the different types of physical activity and how to do them safely, understanding mindful eating and ways of managing stress and dealing with weight plateaus.

Sessions are offered simultaneously at different times and days of the week to accommodate participants’ schedules.

“If people don’t do well in groups or have a busy lifestyle, we can still make MOVE! happen for them,” said Klemp, who also coordinates with veterans from Montrose, Craig, Moab and Glenwood Springs by offering weekly group sessions via Skype. “We never turn anyone away, and the program is entirely free.” › Veterans meet at Canyon View Park Wednesday mornings for camaraderie and exercise.

Veterans’ spouses can also participate in many parts of the program free of charge. In fact, Klemp encourages them to join, especially if they’re the ones doing most of the cooking or shopping.

Wheeler’s wife, Pat, 68, who has walked alongside her husband through the MOVE! program, has lost 75 pounds to date.

When participants lose 5 to 10 percent of their body weights, Klemp notifies their doctors so they can get a new look at lab work and medication levels. Some participants have been able to get off blood pressure or diabetes medication completely.

“They tell me things like, ‘I can breathe a lot easier’ or ‘Look, I need to get a smaller belt!’ and ‘I’m so excited because I spilled on my lap today instead of my stomach!’” said Klemp.

The program is evidence based.

Klemp added that the success of MOVE! nationally is measured by the number of contacts per person and the percentage of weight loss overall.

“Our MOVE! program is double the national average of contacts, retention and follow up,” she said.

“At the VA, we have access to all kinds of support. The continuity of care here is like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”

Some participants like the accountability, while others prefer to monitor themselves at home. It’s also not uncommon for some people to start the program and find they’re not quite ready, then return at a later time. Others find it so helpful that they repeat the sessions a few years later for a refresher or continued support.

Lou Massicotte, 72, lost 20 pounds through MOVE!, but remains in the program after 10 years because his doctor told him, “Don’t stop doing what you’re doing!”

MOVE! has also allowed veterans to get back to the things they love.

Before climbing Quandary Peak last summer, it’d been 40 years since Frank Hagey, 71, climbed his last fourteener.

“I started the program in preparation for the fourteener, but now it’s a habit,” said Hagey, who now walks 24,000-30,000 steps a day.

“MOVE! is not a fad, it’s a lifestyle.”

John Cox, 77, has lost 50 pounds in the two years he’s been with the program.

“I’ve gone from walking 1/4 mile each week to five miles twice a week,” he said. “MOVE! is terrific.”

He added that he recommends the program to every veteran he meets.

“It’s a commitment,” said Klemp.

“I tell them it’s a little like school. I even give them some homework.

We want to make sure we give them the steps and tools they need so it’s worthwhile.” ■

Music that took us to war and back

By Don Johnson ust before America entered World War II, a major change was already taking place in its popular music. The hard, jazzy feel of the late ’20s and early ’30s was giving way to a more relaxed, intimate style, which brought out a new attitude in its listeners. Dancing changed from the Charleston to a more sentimental beat for slow dancing and a faster beat for more active feet.

This was our generation’s defiant thumb-our-nose gesture at the Great Depression. Swing music helped define a culture of a great nation beset by the woes of depression and threatened by the prospect of horrendous war.

The rollicking tempo of the bass clef in boogie woogie spawned such tunes as “He’s Got Two Left Hands,” T.D.’s “Boogie Woogie,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar.” The people were quick to mingle and “cut a rug” to some of the finest music ever produced. Legendary musicians such as Harry James, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, The Dorsey Brothers and many others performed with virtuosity unmatched in musical history.

With the dastardly attack on Pearl

Harbor, the U.S. was suddenly thrust into the worldwide conflict well before it was ready. But our music went with us. With beautiful ballads and upbeat swing, music provided comfort for families now often separated by half a world.

Some musicians went into the military, taking their skills with them. Many of them formed swing bands that traveled from base to base to entertain the troops. Glenn Miller went into the Army Air Corps where he was eventually allowed to create a 50-piece band to go to England and perform for troops stationed there and to broadcast over most of Europe.

They produced more than 800 performances. Many critics opined the group was the finest dance band ever assembled.

It’s thought that Glenn Miller’s plane was hit by unused bombs jettisoned from a British bomber on its way home from a raid on German facilities in Europe. Whatever happened, his plane was never found and Miller’s whereabouts never discovered.

After the war, members of the band reorganized themselves into several bands, all imitating his style and carrying the Glenn Miller name in some form.

The songs that became popular were those that fit the shifting mood of the country. Some of the songs were “fighting songs” that expressed our indignation at the sneak attack and the atrocities performed by swaggering Japanese soldiers on American prisoners.

However, there were fighting songs directed at all our enemies. These songs included: “Remember Pearl Harbor”— “let’s remember Pearl Harbor as they did the Alamo.”

“Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition”—“and we’ll all stay free” “This is Worth Fighting For”—“and I heard that voice within me thunder, ‘this is worth fighting for.’”

“The Last Letter”—“God bless all the boys who are fighting tonight, and God keep America free.”

It wasn’t just the music. Other entertainment joined the fight. One popular cartoon was the unbeatable, spinach-gobbling sailor Popeye, telling them off with “You’re a Sap, Mr. Jap.” Movies like “Bataan” showed our brave boys holding off the Japanese War Machine, with a smile on their face and a quip on their lips.

Songs like, “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree With Anyone Else But Me,” were answered with “I’ll Walk Alone,” “They’re Either Too Young or Too Old” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”

Traveling USO shows went wherever the troops were, bringing them a touch of home with jokes, dancing and songs, such as “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You,” and “Sentimental Journey.”

The number one entertainer was Der Bingle—Bing Crosby. He received his nickname courtesy of the German soldiers with whom he

BEACON SENIOR NEWS was extremely popular. When he entertained troops close to enemy lines, Germans were discovered sneaking into the shrubbery around the outdoor stage—not to attack but to listen to the show.

Many returning veterans found the sentimental journey home was tougher than they expected, but we had a world to set straight on a new footing and we were determined life would be easier for our kids. We may have overdone it.

As the war wound down, the music changed its themes. Now the numbers were such as “It’s Been A Long, Long Time” and “Kiss me once and kiss me twice...”

Some got the mistaken idea that the world owed them an easy living.

Some complained that they were born into a world they didn’t make.

Was anyone ever?

Some of our service members found their true loves where they were stationed, and serenaded them with “My Filipino Baby”— “she’s my treasure and my pet. Her teeth are white and pearly and her hair is black as jet.”

But we came out of the war and worked hard to create the richest, most powerful, and most generous nation the world has ever known.

And our music helped us along the way. ■

The Center for Independence (CFI) recently held a Disability Sensitivity Training for Grand Valley Transit (GVT) drivers, where both staffs discussed various problems that seniors and people with disabilities have in getting where they want and need to go.

One of the most difficult challenges for seniors and people with vision loss is finding reliable and affordable transportation. Fortunately, GVT provides several types of services: Fixed Route, Paratransit and Redland’s Dial-a-Ride.

There is also a free Learn to Ride GVT program that will enable individuals to gain confidence and knowledge necessary to utilize GVT services.

The Senior Shopping Bus is available to all seniors age 60 and older.

This service is built around small groups who want to travel from a common pickup point to a common destination. All buses are wheelchair accessible and can accommodate two passengers utilizing mobility aid devices. This program is supported by the Area Agency on Aging and a donation of 50 cents each way is suggested but not required. The Senior Shopping Bus operates in Clifton, Grand Junction and Fruita.

CFI and GVT will continue to collaborate and support accessible transportation for seniors and people with disabilities.

Dear MM: One thing I learned from working on an alcoholic unit years ago is that if your drinking is causing problems, chances are you are an alcoholic. I also learned that if you don’t confront her with the drinking problem, you are probably co-dependent. My advice is to confront her and offer to go with her to get help. Sometimes spouses are not ready to have their partners give up drinking because they enjoy having drinks, and they feel if the husband or wife quits, they will have to quit, too. Alcoholism is a disease. If your wife had pneumonia, you would want her to be treated. If she refuses to go, I suggest you go to AlAnon. Hope your holidays go well. St. John’s wort linked to ease depression but is no cure-all

S

t. John’s wort is a beautiful plant with yellow flowers known to ease depression by increasing serotonin activity.

For a long time, the plant’s hypericin compound was thought to help with the blues; however, scientists have noted that another compound in the plant called hyperforin plays an even bigger role.

Serotonin isn’t necessarily the be-all, end-all of happy brain chemicals.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are dubbed SSRIs—medications such as Prozac, Lexapro and Zoloft. Some research suggests that depression is really tied to dopamine deficiency, while other researchers believe that brain inflammation is the primary cause of depression since inflammatory chemicals in the brain are usually high in depressed patients. St. John’s wort also has anti-inflammatory properties that could help with depression.

But despite all its benefits, taking prescription antidepressants and St. John’s wort simultaneously is dangerous and could lead to serotonin syndrome—a medical crisis. Symptoms include increased heart rate and blood pressure, fever, diarrhea and muscle rigidity. When severe, serotonin syndrome causes seizures, irregular heartbeat, faintness or unconsciousness, and even death.

Serotonin has to be in balance with other brain chemicals, so ask your doctor before taking St. John’s wort. Due to changes in your liver enzymes, be extremely careful or avoid this herb altogether if you take oral contraceptives, warfarin (blood thinners), digoxin (blood pressure support and antiarrhythmic), theophylline (bronchodilator), indinavir (HIV antiviral) or cyclosporine (immunosuppressive).

Treatment for severe depression is not as easy as popping a single pill or an herbal remedy. St. John’s wort doesn’t even work well for severe cases.

If you’re feeling depressed, please get professional help and make lifestyle or relationship changes, if necessary. Depression can lead to fatal consequences and should be taken seriously. It is fleeting for some and life-long for others. Anhedonia and suicide are linked to severe depression.

hen there’s the wafting aroma of mouthwatering pumpkin pie escorted to the table by the heady perfume of a turkey roasting in the oven.

Did you know that pumpkin helps create glowing health? Probably not. The name originated from “pepon,” the Greek word for large melon, and then was nasalized by the French into “pompon,” which was changed to “pumpion” by the English. (Shakespeare referred to the “pumpion” in his “Merry Wives of Windsor.”) The American colonists changed “pumpion” to “pumpkin,” and there you have it.

Pumpkins were a revered part of the Native American diet, and the pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, were valued more for their oil and medicinal properties than the pumpkin flesh. Native Americans and early colonists preserved pumpkins by drying them. The skin was peeled, the insides scooped out and the flesh was sliced and placed on drying racks or hung up to dry in the sun. Native Americans fed pieces of pumpkin to their horses. The Mayans used the crushed seeds to treat kidney infections and intestinal parasites, and the juice was used to treat burns.

The orange globes quickly became a standby of the early New England settlements. Settlers hollowed out large pumpkins, filled them with milk, eggs, honey or maple syrup, and cinnamon, and baked them in the hot ashes of their fireplaces.

pumpkins at noon. If it were not for pumpkins, we should soon be undoon.”

THE POWER OF PUMPKINS Pumpkin, a squash belonging to the cucurbita family, has become a rising star on the nutritional block due to its high fiber, potassium and vitamin content. No matter how you prepare pumpkin, its potent power—the wonderful beta carotene, fiber and vitamins—will add fresh ammo to your nutritional arsenal.

According to research by Tufts University, pumpkin is a super cancer-fighting food. A mere half-cup of pumpkin contains more than five times the standard recommended dietary allowance for vitamin A per day. Furthermore, it also provides protection against heart disease and many of the degenerative aspects of aging.

By now you know the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B will be $135.50 for 2019, an increase of $1.50 from the 2018 cost.

The annual Medicare Part B deductible increased by $2, and the Part A Hospital deductible increased by $24. Premiums for even formerly low-cost Part D plans will increase in 2019.

With the additional $27.50 for basic Medicare costs, you may feel a pinch if you don’t take time to review your health and drug plan before December 7. Lovers thrill over the freebies and super savings that lure them in. Haters berate it for getting in the way of the Thanksgiving holiday tradition, being a big gimmick, leading people to behave badly, and insist it’s a symbol of excessive American consumerism.

Whether you’re a hater or an enthusiast, there are plenty of ways to cash in on holiday savings on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and throughout the holiday season. Just follow these tips.

Subscribe to store email lists.

Decide at least a couple weeks in advance which stores you want to shop at. Then visit each store’s website, like them on Facebook and subscribe to their email list. Signing up early will ensure you receive special emails for the season’s big Black Friday and Cyber Monday events as well as ongoing savings right on through Christmas Eve. Buy discounted gift cards.

Order discounted gift cards for the stores you’ll shop at from Sam’s Club and websites such as www. raise.com. Then use these cards to purchase sale and special buy items to increase your total savings. The caveat: Be certain the gift cards are for stores you’ll definitely shop at. Otherwise, you’ll defeat your savings by being forced to use the cards on unnecessary purchases to recoup your investment. On the other hand, gift cards can also make great gifts.

Start collecting deals that show up in your newspaper, mailbox and email. Visit your favorite stores online a few days in advance to find

Prepare a “second best” list.

You can’t be everywhere at once, so you may miss a deal or two. If you’ve prepared in advance, you’ll know where to go and what to look for as an alternative.

Watch for early bird freebies.

Many stores offer free gifts to the first 25 or 100 people in their store, and there are some pretty nice prizes to fetch. But they’ll likely require hours of waiting in line starting well before the crack of dawn. Before succumbing to these lures, consider whether the savings you might lose out on elsewhere is worth it.

Black Friday isn’t always the best for hot bargains. Stores tout their Black Friday deals to get consumers into a buying frenzy early in the season. Some even offer their super deals starting Thanksgiving evening or even Wednesday.

Realize that Black Friday deals can often be found online on Cyber Monday.

Shop late in the day. The vast majority of shoppers start out at the crack of dawn or earlier. Typically, malls and stores are dead by 5 p.m. Black Friday evening is a great time to get in your shopping with plenty of great deals still going on.

Shop online. For those not wishing to participate in the madhouse, many stores offer the same deals online as they do in-store.

Avoid impulse buying. For many shoppers, their savings go down the drain as they grab unnecessary “great buys” at the spur of the mo-

Make sure a sale is really a sale.

Some stores mark up merchandise before reducing it only to make it look like a great bargain. Furniture chains are especially known for this tactic.

Don’t waste time trying to price match. On Black Friday and Cyber Monday, stores typically don’t honor price matching.

Be prepared for long lines.

Spend your time waiting in line visiting online stores. Also, download a Black Friday deals app such as Dealnews, Slickdeals, Shopkick, Flipp or The Coupons App. Forgo extended warranties.

With a few exceptions, extended warranties are a waste of money.

Most electronics already come with a limited manufacturer’s warranty.

The accidental damage that might be covered under a store’s extended warranty tends to occur rarely. ■

Submitted by Ted Boothroyd A very vain middle-aged lady decided to have a face lift and some plastic surgery. After the scars had healed, she hit the streets to show off her new good looks.

She went to the beauty parlor and asked the operator, “How old do you think I am?”

After a few moments of thought, she answered, “Oh gosh, I think maybe 28 or 29.”

She was elated, but still needed more reassurance, so she asked the grocery clerk, who replied, “Geez, maybe 30 or 31?”

She giggled and said, “Nope. I’m 41.”

She started to feel confident and young again when an old man approached her in the parking lot and asked if he could help her load her groceries into her car.

The lady said, “Nope! I’m actually 41.”

She said, “Why yes, sir. Do I look too old to be hefting my own groceries?”

“Wow,” the astonished operator said, “you look so much younger.”

He said, “No, ma’am. Actually, I can predict exactly how old you are.”

Not yet fully satisfied, the lady asked the same question to the young trainer at her gym.

“How can you possibly do that?” she asked.

After a moment or two, the young man replied, “Golly, probably 29 or 30.”

“I am very accurate at that ma’am, but first I must place my hand on your thigh.”

She was taken aback, but she agreed.

The older gentleman placed his hand upon her thigh and bowed his head in concentration.

After about 10 minutes, the lady asked, “So how much longer do you need to figure out my age?”

He answered, “Oh, I’m sorry. You are 41.”

Fascinated, the woman asked, “How on earth were you able to do that?”

“Simple,” he said. “I was standing behind you in the grocery line.”

He told his wife, “When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take it all with me into the afterlife.”

And so he got his wife to promise him that she would put all of his money in the casket with him.

The day finally came when the man died. Following his memorial, the wife said, “Wait just a minute!”

She walked over and placed a box inside the casket. The undertakers locked the casket down and rolled it away.

THE LOYAL WIFE

Her friend, who sat next to her, said, “I know you weren’t fool enough to put all that money in there with your husband.”

There was a man who worked all of his life, saved all of his money and was a real miser when it came to money.

The loyal wife replied, “Listen, I’m an honest and loyal wife. I can’t go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him.”

Waste not, want not Falling leaves and autumnal decay reminds us that waste is something that doesn’t exist in nature. We created it.

I

n April 2018, a study funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that American consumers wasted nearly a pound of food per person per day from 2007 to 2014. That’s enough to feed 2 billion more people every year.

About 30 million acres of cropland are used to produce this food each year, which means 7 percent of annual cropland acreage is devoted to growing food that gets transported, handled, bought and sold and thrown into the garbage.

We already know that Americans are incredibly wasteful and that food waste is a serious global issue.

Considering all the ways our food system, industrial system, consumer habits and environment are interconnected, the USDA study brings an interesting finding to light: “Higher quality diets contained greater amounts of fruits and vegetables, which require far less land to produce compared to many other foods. Yet a substantially greater proportion of fruits and vegetables were wasted compared to other foods, and fruits and vegetables have higher agricultural input needs (per unit of land area) than most other crops.”

In other words, those of us eating lots of fruits and vegetables might

be overlooking something big: We’re throwing away a lot of food!

Fruits and vegetables accounted for 39 percent of food waste determined in this study. As communities rally together to create better—more ethical, sustainable and healthier—food systems, it’s time we bring food waste into the fold.

WITH THE MIND OF A GARDENER

As gardeners, we have a unique relationship with food, which also brings to light the connection food has with so many other aspects of life and society. Gardening keeps this relationship we have with food intimate and unadulterated by the pressure of having our livelihoods depend on it.

We see the miracles of life that are infused in growing food, and yet, if we drown our tomatoes or the chickens dig up all the garlic, we’ll be okay.

This relationship gives us power to take global issues into our own hands and to align our values with our lifestyles. It gives us the power to act.

But waste is non-existent in nature, and as students of nature, it ought to be us who step up and figure out another way.

Even if we didn’t buy more than we could eat, we still have squash skins and apple cores to dispose of.

If maintaining a huge compost pile through the winter is not an option for you, what else is there to do?

These are a few options. Separating out fruit and vegetable scraps for a neighbor with chickens is a great way to minimize what goes into the trash.

Consider building a worm bin, or a vermicomposting system. Allowing worms to transform your kitchen scraps into vermicompost (a mix-

Finally, we can turn to collective action. Contact a city official to ask about possibilities for composting and encouraging a citywide food scraps diversion. ■

Ignite! Grand Junction

By Jan Weeks f you’ve ever wanted to attend a TED talk but don’t want to pay $8,500 a year to become a member, Ignite Grand Junction makes it easy­, and free, to attend what speaker organizer Rebecca Mullen calls a mini-TED talk.

I

TED, which stands for technology, entertainment and design, began in 1984 as a one-off conference that melded the three disciplines. In the TED forum, speakers have 18 minutes or less to convey their thoughts on everything from teaching to writing to bionoics to well, you name it.

The format for Ignite is a bit different. Up to 12 speakers each get five minutes and 20 slides to present their ideas. According to Mullen, this local, non-political mini-TED event hopes to paint the community purple with stories of unity.

“I find that when we can hear others’ stories, we realize that the essences of our stories is that we all want the same thing,” Mullen said, “and so differences disappear.”

Ignite began in Seattle in 2006, and its mission is “Everyone Speaks.”

Since then Ignite events have become an international phenomenon, with experiences happening in Helsinki, Tunisia, Paris, New York

City and over 350 other locations in between.

Specifically, Ignite hopes to gather the community to tell the Grand Valley story since it’s the people who fill the valley with adventure, compassion, wisdom and curiosity.

Last year’s event featured speakers like Home Loan Chairman and CEO Jamie Hamilton, who talked about how baseball unifies the valley into a family, and flight nurse Kelly Thompson, who showed slides of her mission trip to South America.

Other topics include biking and wine making in the Grand Valley.

Deciding on a plan can be tricky.

Beneficiaries must consider lifestyle factors, how much they can afford to spend, and what their future health needs may be.

In recent years, Congress didn’t

make those decisions easier. Since 2011, seniors who chose a Medicare Advantage plan had 45 days to “disenroll” if it wasn’t right for them. But their only alternative was enrolling in traditional Medicare.

Thankfully, that won’t be the case anymore. Next year, beneficiaries who enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan will have the ability to switch to another Advantage plan at any point within the first three months of 2019. The change gives seniors much more flexibility and can make open enrollment less stressful.

Seniors may find all these options empowering and overwhelming.

Fortunately, help is available.

Medicare.gov contains a wealth of information that can offer assistance to beneficiaries.

Seniors can consult licensed health insurance agents and brokers. Many have decades of experience and are specially trained to educate consumers. Nearly three-quarters of agents and brokers spend a significant portion of their time explaining coverage to clients and investigating consumer insurance options.

Agents and brokers can help seniors determine which Medicare Advantage plan would be best for them or whether they’d be better off enrolling in traditional Medicare.

Seniors can also get free help by contacting their local SHIP office.

Medicare covers nearly one in five Americans. This open enrollment season, that population will find that they have more choices and more flexibility. She Has a Name: a mission 9,000 miles in the making

The report came down the line on a Kenyan mountainside.

Darrin Crow, 55, a man young at heart but fully aware of his age, took a stumble.

“I wiped out going down a hill in the mountains,” Darrin, the “older mzungu,” said with a laugh.

Darrin is fond of this story as he relates it some time later back in Grand Junction. He’s a board member of She Has A Name, a Grand Junction-based nonprofit that changes the lives of young women in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

Women there are forced between two unimaginable realities: sell their bodies or face starvation. She Has A Name offers an alternative from this poverty-based prostitution for the select few they can support.

Sadly, they cannot help them all.

Darrin said there are about 30,000 women facing this issue in just the one slum they work in, so the help they provide to the few is made worthwhile.

While Darrin did not found the organization himself, he has a unique connection. His daughter, Blythe, started She Has A Name about six years ago.

“Before she went to college, she became interested in the human trafficking issue,” Darrin said.

Blythe, now 23, was just 18 when the groundwork was being laid for the nonprofit. Now the program helps about nine girls at a time, providing them the means for a better life.

“She pays for their school, insurance, food, housing, and she pays people to watch out for them,” Darrin said.

Some of the real work, however, involves going to areas in these slums where prostitution is prevalent and trying to help girls when they’re most vulnerable.

“The last time she was ever paid as a prostitute was when my son paid her not to work that night,” Darrin said of one the first girls to join the program. “He gave her enough money that she would just sit and visit with him.”

According to the organization’s advocate packet, one year’s worth of support for one girl is $3,500.

“Most of the time, they don’t even know really what it is that we’re trying to offer them,” Darrin said.

“But, the team knows and they know that this girl is going to win the lottery and her life is going to be different and she’s going to get out of the slums.”

She Has a Name is able to continue its mission because of generous monetary donations. They’re also looking for people to join them on trips to Africa to witness change first-hand.

Love, honor, respect: a visit to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

By Joyce Corley ince I was a child, I’ve had many opportunities to visit military cemeteries and to understand the valor and sacrifices represented there. The one I’m most familiar with is located in Los Angeles, California, now the West Los Angeles National Medical Center and Cemetery (formerly Sawtelle Veterans Hospital and Cemetery).

My uncle, Eddie De Quir, was a disabled veteran. Born in Louisiana, he spoke fluent French and served as a translator during World War I. As a consequence, he was gassed in the trenches and developed painful rheumatoid arthritis. He literally spent the rest of his life at the Sawtelle Hospital, except for weekend furloughs during the holidays. Every Sunday my family, along with my Aunt Pearl, visited Uncle Eddie at Sawtelle. They’re both buried there, so we still visit.

As an adult, I’ve visited the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC, and Gettysburg National Cemetery in Pennsylvania many times. There’s also a nice military cemetery in Grand Junction.

On a recent trip to California, I was able to spend a week in San Diego, where I had the opportunity to visit what to me is a special national cemetery.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma is one of the most

touching cemeteries I’ve visited.

The setting, both poignant and breathtaking, certainly sets it apart.

With the Pacific Ocean on one side and San Diego Bay on the other, it’s one of the most beautiful national memorials I’ve visited.

Fort Rosecrans became a national cemetery in 1934, but heroes from many battles have been buried there since the beginning of California’s history. As a history buff and educator, as well as the wife of a Korean War veteran, I find these memorials to be a great place for meditation and a wonderful opportunity to pay homage and respect.

Viewing the graves there once again drove home the multitude of sacrifices that men and women have made for our country. The numbers buried there are phenomenal.

All of these military cemeteries emphasize these truths—bullets and death do not respect ethnicity, gender or nationality. All the veterans buried there are people who loved this country and proudly served to protect it. That same love and respect should manifest itself in the many millions of citizens left here to enjoy the liberties and benefits of this great country.

The day of our visit, we stayed until dusk. It’s truly worth a visit to pay your respects, but also to contemplate our blessings as Americans. ■

100 years of war: Honoring those who fought bravely

By Jan Weeks n 1918, on November 11, at 11 a.m., the war to end all wars came to an end when Germany sued for peace after four long years of combat. Though the fighting stopped, it would take until June 28, 1919, for hostilities to officially end with the Treaty of Versailles. Germany had little input on drafting the treaty, and some historians believe the harsh penalties imposed on Germany led to massive resentment that allowed Adolph Hitler to come to power. And we all know how that ended.

The Great War began on June 28, 1914, when a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo, in a bid to free Bosnia and Herzegovina from Austro-Hungarian rule. For four long years, the Central Powers—Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Japan and the Ottoman Empire—fought the Allies—France, Great Britain, Italy and America.

than any other weapon. Machine guns could fire 450 to 600 rounds per minute to mow attacking lines of soldiers down like stalks of wheat under the scythe.

Tanks, aircraft and submarines added to the arsenals, but the most silent, though seldom deadly, weapon was poison gas. On April 22, 1915, German artillery fired cylinders containing chlorine gas in the Ypres area, sending other countries rushing to develop their own deadly gasses. Chlorine gas attacked the eyes and respiratory system; mustard gas did the same but also caused blistering on any exposed skin. The gasses were not usually deadly but incapacitated large numbers of troops and had lifelong effects on those exposed.

Places most Americans had never heard of became infamous killing grounds: Gallipoli, Verdun, the Marne, the Somme, Passchendaele, Amiens and more. Germany’s military back was broken when the Allies, battered but not broken, were joined by thousands of fresh troops from the U.S., commanded by General John “Blackjack” Pershing.

Over the next 100 days, the Allies forced Germany to retreat behind the Hindenburg Line. The Allies broke through, and the Germans surrendered. An armistice brought the bloody battles of World War I

to an end.

The heroism and horrors of the Great War were memorialized in songs such as “Over There”; novels like “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “A Farewell to Arms,” and local author Dalton Trumbo’s “Johnny Got His Gun;” movies such as “Legends of the Fall,” and “Wings,” a silent 1927 movie. Perhaps the most memorable piece of writing was the poem, “In Flanders Fields,” penned by John McCrae, a Canadian physician who fought in the second battle of Ypres in Flanders. His reference to the poppies blowing between rows of white crosses is why the American Legion Auxiliary still sells paper poppies to honor veterans.

Until June 1, 1954, November 11 was called Armistice Day. President Eisenhower signed legislation striking the word “armistice” and adding “veterans” after veterans’ service organizations lobbied for the change and Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday.

This month, on the 100th anniversary of the end of the war to end all wars, let us remember and honor those who fought so bravely in so many conflicts, and let us pray that there may one day finally be an end to all wars. ■

Black Market Trust:

Gypsy jazz in Grand Junction

By Jan Weeks magine Django Reinhardt jamming with Frank Sinatra, with a touch of Big Band thrown in. Those who love jazz of all eras will find an evening of bliss at the November Community Concerts presentation of Black Market Trust.

I

According to bassist Brian Netzley, the quintet plays everything from jazz standards to Gypsy jazz, personified by Django Reinhardt in the ’30s up to present-day guitar wizard Gonzalo Bergara.

The unusual name of the group prompts people to ask, “What does it mean?”

There’s no deep meaning or mystery in the name.

The group, four at the time, hadn’t really become a band yet, but

when ABC put out a call for music for its series, “Happy Endings,” they wrote some music, were hired, and suddenly needed a name for the show credits, “like right now,” Netzley added.

Not wanting a boring name, they started throwing words around and came up with Black Market Trust.

“I wish we had a more interesting story,” Netzley said. “It doesn’t really mean anything.”

The original group consisted of Jeff Radaich, lead guitarist; Nick Coventry, violin; Brandon Laws, drums; and Netzley on bass. Then they added Kale Stiles on rhythm guitar, sax and clarinet. They all sing as well as play.

Radaich and Netzley grew up in southern California,

listening to and playing rock and roll. Then someone gave Radaich a Gypsy jazz album. Meanwhile, Netzley had been playing jazz standards with a French man who introduced him to Django Reinhardt. Radaich and Netzley immediately fell in love with the Gypsy style of jazz. The two began playing with Gonzolo Bergara, an incredible Gypsy jazz guitar player, and played at festivals all over the world. After they recorded an album while playing with Gonzalo, people said, “You should start your own group.”

So in 2013, they added Coventry and Laws, and Stiles came on board just two years ago. Black Market Trust has played jazz clubs, listening rooms, theaters and performing art centers, as well as outdoor concerts and festivals. Netzley said they prefer the more intimate settings.

“We try to have an engaging show and get the audience involved,” he said,

“and the larger, outdoor venues don’t allow us to do that.”

Their only Colorado gig to date was in Pagosa Springs. This tour will take them to Grand Junction, Loveland and the Denver area. They seldom, if ever, have time to see the sights or enjoy the town.

“It’s get to town, set up, do a sound check, play, go back to the hotel, leave after breakfast,” Netzley said.

The fun isn’t over when the music stops. The band will be available to chat with the audience afterward.

Their new album, “Anything for You,” will also be for sale.

The concert is on Thursday, November 15 at Grand Junction High School auditorium. Doors open at 6:45 and the concert begins at 7:30. According to board member Wynne Bouley, people start filling the lobby very early. Seating is firstcome, first served. Tickets are $25 each and can be bought online or at the door, if available. Season tickets are still obtainable for $70, which brings the cost per concert to less than $15. A bargain to be sure. Considering a computer for Christmas?

W

ith each passing week, as Christmas approaches, I receive an increase in emails, phone calls and texts from friends and acquaintances asking for advice on technology gift giving.

The most common question by far is, “I’m in need a new computer.

What should I get?”

I recommend laptops far more than I recommend desktop computers or tablets. In many cases, a budget laptop (under $400) has exactly the same internal components as a budget desktop.

Laptops can be a little more difficult to repair, but if you take care of your machine, it will likely become obsolete before it ever needs repairs.

Some people avoid laptops because of the small screen size. However, any external screen can be connected to a laptop. This means that you can either use a larger screen by itself or you can have both screens running simultaneously so they work together as one large panoramic screen.

If laptops can do anything desktops can do, why get a desktop?

Desktops usually give you a little more bang for your buck. Laptops typically cost 20-50 percent more than their desktop counterparts with comparable features.

If you have kids at home, a desktop computer is often best for homework because it’s less likely to be abused or accidentally damaged.

Spilling soda on a desktop computer keyboard is a $20 mistake. But the same accident on a laptop can mean the total loss of the machine.

If you’re shopping for a new computer, I recommend starting with a decision on whether you want the mobile lifestyle that a laptop provides or the power and less costly repair or maintenance of a desktop computer.

Once you know what device you want, the only things you really have to worry about are cost and features. Brand does not matter. At each price point, almost all computers are the same on the inside.

I typically don’t recommend buying the cheapest computer.

They’re often too underpowered and will have problems within weeks after purchase.

I usually expect a laptop to last about five to seven years. In order to get this type of longevity, get one with enough power that it will still be able to function well with future updates.

Look for a machine with an Intel i5 or i7 processor or an AMD A10 or higher processor. Make sure you have at least 500GB of storage space on the hard drive and more than 4GB of RAM. If you have those features, you will own a machine that can edit photos, play streaming videos, and even do basic video editing.

If you don’t do multimedia work with the computer, you’ll likely replace the computer for something better long before it loses its total usefulness. ■

Be holiday savvy:

How to survive the season with your finances intact

By Kimberly Blaker he average American spends roughly $900 on gifts during the holiday season, according to a 2016 study by American Research Group, Inc. Add in the decorating, baking and holiday dinners, and it can quickly become an even bigger chunk of change.

So what can you do to ensure you start the new year without new debt?

Create a holiday budget. Include gifts, food, decorations, postage for holiday cards and wrapping supplies. Once you’ve listed all your expenses, review it and decide where you can cut some costs.

Gifts to extended family and friends are an excellent place to start. Talk to those you exchange gifts with, and see if they’ll agree to forgo the gift exchange or else set a dollar limit. Another option for families or groups is to draw names to reduce the number of gifts everyone has to purchase, or hold a white elephant exchange.

Decide in advance on a gift value for each gift recipient. Let’s say you’ve decided on a gift value of $50 for your sister. Now, rather than buying her something on sale for $50 that’s worth $75, stick to the value.

Hold off on holiday cards. Do you usually send out more holiday cards than you receive? Opt instead for a phone call for those you don’t talk to often. It’ll cost you nothing and have more meaning. Mail cards only to those who send you cards.

Cut back on the baking. When’s the last time you heard someone complain of a shortage of holiday goodies? Probably never. Most of us eat far more than we’d like to just because it’s there.

Hold potluck dinners. Offer to provide just the meat. Then ask everyone to bring a specific type of dish to avoid duplicates.

Plan your shopping before you head out. Do your research to find the best deals on items on your shopping list. Keep your eyes out for newspaper fliers and coupons for the stores you plan to shop.

Leave credit cards at home when you go shopping to avoid impulse purchases. Many people spend far more than they plan on by purchasing unnecessary bargains they just can’t resist.

Finally, if you do use your credit card, try to make a serious plan to double or triple the monthly payments to reduce the interest you’ll pay and to quickly get out of debt. ■

Tips for enhanced security while holiday shopping online

By Teresa Ambord ast year’s holiday shopping season sent about 57 percent of shoppers to their computers and smartphones to find deals. The convenience and cost savings of shopping online are enticing to buyers and irresistible to criminals.

“Consumer Reports” has advice from Raymond Pucci, of the Mercator Advisory Group consulting firm, on staying safe online this holiday season.

• Find out if your credit card offers extra security. Check with your card issuer to find out if you can get a temporary credit card number. The number is linked to your account, so when you provide it to a merchant site, your transaction goes through.

see the temporary number, which is useless to them. You can also disable a card when you’re not using it with a smartphone app.

• Strengthen the security of your card by registering it with American Express SafeKey, MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa. After you register it, create a personal ID number known only to you.

When you use your card online, you’ll be asked to enter the code before you can proceed.

• Use a mobile wallet. A mobile wallet such as Android Pay or Apple Pay is more secure than a card because it uses substitute numbers or tokens rather than your real account number. Your smartphone adds protections of its own, such as a fingerprint reader or Face ID.

Depending on the card, there may be a charge of a few dollars to buy it, but the protection is worth it. If you shop online at a merchant such as Walmart, you can purchase a gift card for no

• Let merchants help protect you. I always believed that you should not allow websites to keep your payment information on file, but according to Consumer Reports, doing so lets the merchant site protect you. They track your spending, and if an anomaly occurs, such as a sudden charge of $500 where you generally spend $25 or less, the merchant may be able to detect fraud.

Plan ahead so you can protect your assets. With a little extra precaution, you can stay safe, avoid crowds and scoop up deals. Happy shopping! ■

Dennis Seth, 68, along with his wife Janet, 65, have sold and repaired watches in Grand Junction independently since May 2016. Dennis is a certified watchmaker who has worked for jewelry stores and repaired for other stores on the side.

This is the first time the Seths have offered their services directly to the public.

Dennis never set out to work with clocks and watches. When he faced the choice of going to college or waiting to be drafted by the Army to serve in Vietnam, he chose college. He wanted to do something in forestry or aviation, but instead, he received a degree in microprecision technology.

He started Mountain Time Services in Colorado Springs in 1977 and took the name from his work with North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

“Some people in uniform and some in civilian clothes came into the jewelry store where I worked, looking for someone to repair camera clocks for radar units on the DEW line (Distant Early Warning) in Alaska to keep track of Russian planes,” Dennis said. “There are cameras in other time zones, Eastern Time, Central Time, and so forth.”

Thus, Mountain Time Watch Company was born.

Their watches range in price from $120 to almost $600. They have water resistant ratings and come with a three-year warranty.

“We’re up against the big box stores that are continually discounting, but it’s not always the best merchandise,” Dennis said. “I think I can prove our quality is comparable to the price. Plus, we service them.”

The Seths said their business is the only watch shop to do repairs in Grand Junction since jewelry and box stores typically send them out because they don’t have the trained staff to do them in-house.

“Most shops like mine aren’t selling their own product,” Dennis said.

“That sets us apart—we’re not selling jewelry. It’s all watches.”

Mountain Time Watches is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Even though they have limited hours, Dennis’ repair work alone is a full-time job.

Base Camp 40: Warriors in the Wild

Veterans have expressed how BC40 and the “gift of the wild” has given them new passion for life.

“Veteran feedback has been incredibly humbling,” said Bristol. “We are opening the right doors. Every year, it becomes less and less about the harvesting of an animal, and more about the relationships forged, and the absorption of the absolution that nature provides. It’s a spiritual experience for all of us.”

When it comes to showing gratitude, Glade Park resident Paul Bristol doesn’t do anything on a small scale.

I

n 2011, Bristol started Whistler Entertainment, Inc., a nonprofit that supports other charitable organizations by promoting and organizing music festivals and other special events.

“The first event, Pickin’ On The Pinyon music festival, was to honor HopeWest workers who changed my life during my father’s journey battling cancer,” said Bristol. “It’s now our main in-house fundraiser held every August.”

That’s where Bristol befriended Scott Brown, a former U.S. Marine and frontman of the Texas-based Scooter Brown Band, a group of musicians known for their performances at military events across Texas. They bonded over their love of the outdoors and their passions for gratitude and giving back.

Taking in the incredible views of Glade Park’s rim of Unaweep Canyon, Brown urged Bristol to do a veterans event on the Bedford Ranch he was managing, which became the basis of Base Camp 40 (BC40), Warriors in the Wild.

The name comes from the or-

ganization’s “base camp”—its headquarters on Glade Park—and refers to Colorado Game management unit 40.

Like most Colorado outdoorsmen, Bristol understands the power that comes with being surrounded by nature’s solace and the gifts the mountains can deliver.

BC40 takes veterans on hunting, fishing and outdoor adventure trips to promote reflection, restoration and camaraderie. Numerous ranchers on Glade Park and across the country answered Bristol’s call to allow veteran hunts on their land.

He said their donation of time and property for the veterans is the cornerstone of what BC40 does.

South Africa. A group of Gold Star Fathers recently returned from a fishing trip to Lake Powell.

Most trips average three to five days and group sizes are limited.

Due to limited resources, 40-50 veterans from around the country take BC40 trips each year. The waiting list is staggering.

Bristol is committed to keeping the organization focused, with hopes of expansion. Base Camp at Valor Ranch is a project aimed at purchasing 500 acres in Glade Park to provide a true base camp for the organization and a lasting getaway for military groups across the U.S.

“The hardest part of this mission is that not all of the hundreds who apply for the trips are chosen,” said Bristol. “One hundred percent of the cost is covered. What we offer is just a drop in the bucket compared to their sacrifice.”

Viewing traditions from the other side of youth

Early on in our marriage, my husband and I celebrated Thanksgiving at home with our kids. We’d sleep in, stay in our pajamas, watch the Macy’s parade on TV, set a nice family table, and smell that turkey cooking in the oven in anticipation of the moment everyone ogled its golden tenderness as it was placed on the dinner table. These traditions were my favorite things about Thanksgiving.

s our kids grew older, we moved closer to my husband’s family and shared the holiday with them. I missed our own holiday traditions, but they were now filled with more loving family members, with whom we created new traditions. One such tradition was to go around the table just before the meal and take turns sharing what we were thankful for. I think I was the only one who actually liked this tradition because over the years everyone got bored with it and gave the same pat answer: family.

Rarely did any of us waver from this generic response.

After years of suffering through the same tired answers, we stopped the practice altogether. The family grew so much in size with our children now having spouses, in-laws and children of their own that even I grew weary of what once was a beloved tradition.

In more recent years, our kids have moved away and can’t come home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. My sister-in-law, who hosts Thanksgiving dinner every year, graciously invites us over, but for the last several years we’ve opted not to make the three-hour drive each way. It’s a long trip, and to be honest, the crowd has gotten so big with all the extended family members it just doesn’t feel as intimate anymore. The traditions have become theirs, not ours.

My husband and I have chosen to spend our next Thanksgiving alone.

The traditions are still my favorite part of the holiday. Even though it’s now just the two of us, I can still sleep in—well, kind of. I get up now at 7 a.m. instead of 6. My bladder just won’t wait anymore. I still stay in my PJs. I still put a turkey in the oven, watch the parade and call my kids to wish them a happy holiday.

To me, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and remember the challenges I’ve faced and overcome, and the family I have and remain grateful for. I’ve brought back the tradition of sharing what my husband and I are grateful for before we eat, but after 35 years of marriage, we already know how grateful we are for our family. I don’t have to verbally tell my husband how grateful I am to have him in my life or call my inlaws to remind them how I much I appreciate them. I don’t have to tell my kids. They already know.

I’ve tweaked the tradition a little and it looks different now. After all, I look different; I am different now.

Now on Thanksgiving morning, my favorite thing is to look in the mirror. I look at myself—teeth not yet brushed, hair not yet combed, and still in those beloved PJs—and when I see the age spots, wrinkles and physical scars, I tell myself I’m grateful. I’m grateful to see myself there for another year.

My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is the same as it’s always been. It’s enjoying the tradition. It just looks a little different from the other side of youth. ■

What happened to thank you notes?

By Melanie Wiseman f you’re like me, you’ve noticed something missing in your mailbox the past couple decades.

Mixed among the bills, campaign promises, ads and junk mail was the occasional hand-addressed, stamped envelope that stood out like a special treasure. You’d drop all other mail and excitedly open it first—the personal thank you note. Remember those days? What used to be a token of gratitude and thoughtfulness is now a thing of the past.

With the advent of email, text messaging and social media, our communication has become impersonal and shallow. “Thank you” has been abbreviated to “Thx,” all for the sake of time so the sender can get back to me, myself and I. Where one email looks like the next, the small effort behind a hand-written note gives a personal, thoughtful touch and tells the receiver they matter.

Also unlike texts or emails, you can hold personal thank you notes in your hands, reliving a happy moment or recapturing an embrace.

While emails and texts are usually read and deleted, thank you notes have lasting value—sitting on counters like a generous smile that can be read and reread.

Some people I know just naturally get it. They understand that sending a personal note is the right thing to do. It’s a way of returning kindness with kindness. To others, writing a thank you note is a foreign concept. I’ve heard many friends comment about not even knowing if wedding, birthday or baby shower gifts have been received due to lack of acknowledgement.

Where have we gone wrong? Why do so few people send thank you notes anymore?

The most common excuse is not having the materials on hand. I follow one blogger who said she’s considering giving a box of thank you cards and a roll of stamps as future wedding gifts.

Another excuse is not having time.

While hand-written notes may take a minute or two longer than sending off a text, you can’t put a value on their benefits.

Some people think it’s the new normal, but some of us think it’s lazy and rude. It’s all about priorities.

Studies show that penning a thank you note is a good way to lift the receiver’s spirits as well as your own. Showing gratitude is good for self-esteem and benefits your physical and psychological health.

Handwritten, personal notes speak volumes—they can strengthen relationships or turn an acquaintance into a friend.

Thank you notes are for more than just receiving a gift. It warms my heart when I receive thank you notes from dear friends for unsolicited help at a garage sale, a fun evening at dinner, games and laughs, or for just being their friend.

No text or email could ever take the place of that personal touch.

Is there hope for reviving this intimate act of appreciation? As seniors, are we being good role models of supporting a lost etiquette by writing thank you notes ourselves? Modeling gratitude is one of the most special gifts we can give children. The impact of living by example will cause thankfulness to grow in their hearts.

Every day can be special when you count your blessings and cultivate gratitude, not just at Thanksgiving.

By sending a personal thank you note, you are giving another gift.

It’s good for you and it’s good for them. ■
