Much like Joe and Annie Aragon and Bob and Shirley Jentsch, the two couples you’ll read about in this month’s cover story, Sam and I met when we were teenagers. After 12 years of being together, we joke that neither of us would know what to do if we were suddenly cast out into the dating world.

Montrose musicians sing their way into their wives’ hearts

F Despite his burgeoning career as a musician, Joe Aragon decided years ago that being with his family was the most important thing in his life.

alling in love all over again? Two long-married Montrose couples don’t feel there are any secrets to remaining in love.

Despite his burgeoning career as a musician, Joe Aragon decided years ago that being with his wife, Annie, and his family was the most important thing in his life.

“I was given the opportunity to sign a six-month contract to go on a USO Tour to Greenland (playing Texas Swing—his specialty) but it would be too hard to be gone that long,” said Joe, now 82.

It wasn’t the only chance he had to go on to the “big time” in music, but Joe decided he wanted to stay close to the girl he fell in love with at the Delta movie theatre so many years ago.

“There are different kinds of richness,” he said. “Sometimes all that glitter just ain’t gold.”

LOVE AT THE MOVIES Joe and Annie met when they were teenagers. Both their parents were farmers, so they only knew each other in passing.

Joe said he got to talking to Annie’s brother-in-law and asked about the pretty girl with the long “dish-water blonde” hair.

Then, fate took a hand and Joe spotted Annie sitting in front of him at the local theatre. He said he was flirting with her and she slapped his hand away.

“But when I asked her to come sit next to me, her girlfriend whispered something to her and then she came and sat. That was it,” he said.

They dated for five years before getting married. Now, 61 years, four kids and five grandchildren later, Annie and Joe are still as romantic as ever.

“I’m lucky I met her. She’s precious and probably the reason I’m still here,” said Joe. “We’ve had our rough spots, like everyone else. You just have to use a little commonsense and step back.”

He and Annie have lived in Montrose for the past 59 years. During that time, Joe has worked many different jobs while playing the guitar in pick-up bands on the side.

“When I was a little kid, they couldn’t keep me away from the instrument with a baseball bat,” he said.

“You know, he’s self-taught,” Annie, 81, added, beaming with pride.

Joe played every Saturday night for four years at the Wagon Wheel dance house before it closed down.

He’s been in many little bands, like the Larry Flowers Band, and played at the Elks Club and Pea Green.

Now he plays on a fancy new electric guitar given to him by his daughter.

COWBOY JAMMIN’ These days, you’ll find Annie and Joe at the Cowboy Jam every Friday night at the Circle 3 Cowboy Church on LaSalle Road in Montrose. This informal group of local musicians gets together to play mostly cowboy music but sometimes venture into other genres.

It’s where Annie and Joe celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

It’s also where they met fellow Montrose musician Bob and his wife Shirley Jentsch.

Bob, 77, has been playing the accordion since he was 8 years old.

He was a teenager when his family moved into the house across the street from 10-year-

old Shirley. They got to know each other at neighborhood picnics, where he’d play his accordion with other musicians on a flat-bed truck.

“He was so good. They would haul the flat-bed around the blocks and he’d play,” Shirley, 71, recalled.

Bob and Shirley were just friends until he joined the Marines and did a three-year tour during the Cuban missile crisis. Then he came back home a 22-year-old veteran. They were married in 1967.

The Jentsches split their time between their Montrose home and a cabin in the mountains near Lake City. They’re avid supporters of the Montrose Library, and Shirley volunteers with the Friends of the Library as a researcher and book evaluator.

When asked what’s kept them together all this time, Shirley remarked, “I guess it’s my good cooking—that’s my saving grace.”

Bob added, “I learned how to say ‘Yes, ma’am a long time ago.”

t’s nice to catch someone’s attention, unless that someone is the IRS. Each year, about a million tax returns are audited, or about 0.5 percent of Americans. That low rate means you probably weren’t audited, but who are the unlucky ones? Even if you and your accountant are meticulous and squeaky clean, enduring an audit is something you wouldn’t wish on that guy who’s talking too loud on his cell phone at the next table.

With limited enforcement funds, the IRS tends to look more closely at tax returns with certain characteristics. None of these factors will guarantee you an audit, but the fewer of them you have, the less likely you’ll be opening a letter from the IRS.

Taking an early Required Minimum Distribution for a reason not included in the exceptions. Legitimate exceptions depend on your type of retirement plan (Qualified s.a. 401(k) or IRA, SEP, SIMPLE, etc). In general, legitimate reasons include corrective withdrawals (if you paid too much), death, disability, divorce, education, equal payments, homebuyers, medical, military and rollovers. The extra tax on taking an unwarranted early distribution is 10 percent.

Reporting big losses, such as gambling losses without winnings or a hobby-like business that always loses money. Generally, if you can’t show a profit in three of the last five years, the business is considered recreational and not subject to deductions.

Claiming day-trading losses on Schedule C (business income and loss). These belong on Schedule D, for capital gains and losses.

Not accurately reporting taxable income. W-2, 1099s and other tax forms you receive are also sent to the IRS. They look for the numbers to match, so make sure they do.

High deductions, including for donations and medical expenses. If your deductions are much higher than expected from taxpayers with your profile, the IRS agent may probe the details a bit more.

Not taking your Required Minimum Distribution. Remember that after age 70 ½, you must begin to draw down your tax-deferred retirement account. The penalty is sky-high: you’ll pay a 50 percent tax on the amount that should have been withdrawn.

Foreign bank accounts must be reported to the Feds. Likewise, if you ever hold more than $10,000 in foreign currency, you are required to report it. No money laundering allowed!

Alimony deductions for a divorce after 2018. Alimony is no longer deductible to the payer or taxable to the receiver. If you own your own business, the types and amounts of business deductions can affect whether you’re subject to an audit:

Claiming losses on a rental can be suspect, as can writing off a loss on a hobby.

Filing form 5213. You wouldn’t think filing a required form would raise a flag, but this form requests the IRS not to audit you for the first five years of a business, as you try to transition a hobby to a legitimate business.

Perhaps they just want to be first in line to congratulate you.

Erroneous calculations, whether by you or your tax preparer, tip off the IRS that there could be additional problems.

Hiring a preparer who falsifies your return without your knowledge hurts you and your preparer.

Even at only half a percent, odds are you’ll have to submit to an audit sometime in your life as a taxpayer.

The best policy is to keep records for the required length of time, be meticulous and turn in your taxes on time. That way, the first level of questions will be a boring exchange of back-up information that proves you’re not worth the next level of inquiry. ■

My question is this: What’s wrong with doing nothing? I have been doing nothing for five years and I think it is great. I stay up late and I sleep in late. I have lunch with friends. LAUGHING MATTERS VIOLIN TRIALS Submitted by Ralph Bickel Little Sammy was practicing his violin in the living room while his father was trying to read his newspaper in the den. The family dog was lying in front of the father, and as the screeching sounds of the youngster’s playing reached the pup’s ears, he began to howl.

The father endured the violin and the dog as long as he could.

Finally, he jumped up and slammed his paper to the floor and yelled, “For pity’s sake, can’t you play something the dog doesn’t know?”

SHOW AND TELL Submitted by Martha Veale A kindergarten teacher gave her class a show and tell assignment.

Each student was instructed to bring in an object that represented their religion to share with the class.

The first student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Benjamin. I’m Jewish and this is the Star of David.”

The second student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Mary. I’m Catholic and this is a rosary.”

The third student got up in front of the class and said, “My name is Tommy. I am a Methodist. And this is a casserole.”

THE DRUGGIST Submitted by Walter Cunningham Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife. Tearfully she explained, “The druggist insulted me terribly this morning on the phone. I had to call multiple times before he would even answer the phone.”

The husband immediately drove downtown to confront the druggist

and demand an apology. Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him, “Now just a minute. Listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm failed to go off so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car just to realize that I had locked the house with both house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get my keys.

Then I was driving a little too fast and I got a speeding ticket. Then when I was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire.

“When I finally got to the store a bunch of people were waiting for me to open up. I opened the store and started waiting on these people, all the time the darn phone was ringing off the hook. Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash register drawer to make change, and they spilled all over

the floor. I had to get down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels and the phone was still ringing.

When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on it. Half of them hit the floor and broke. Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let up, and I finally got back to answer it.

“It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer. And believe me, Mister, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.”

Because both had jobs, they found it difficult coordinating their travel schedules. It was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day. Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. In his room there was a computer so he decided to send his wife an email back in Minneapolis. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her address and sent the email without realizing his error.

In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband’s funeral.

The dearly departed was a minister of many years who had been called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow checked her email, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message, she fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife Subject: I’ve arrived.

I know you are surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

s it so bad to have a second piece of cake? Or to skip a week of exercising when you feel overwhelmed by work, grandkids and life? The experts say no, as long as you don’t convince yourself it’s always okay.

But if rationalizing that you can be “bad” here and there becomes a pattern, it can sabotage all your stay-well efforts.

Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer. To defy denial and keep your ticker on track for the long run, I’ve dissected five common heart health self-deceptions.

If you spend an hour or so a day running after your grandkids, you are getting some heart health benefits—a modest calorie burn, an

HEALTH & WELLNESS immune-system boost, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. But it’s the more intense, sustained movement lasting 30 minutes or more that provides the maximum health and weight-loss benefits.

Transform grandkid duty into exercise. If you typically stroll in the park with a toddler, for example, pick up the pace and try to log in 30 minutes. And while your grandchild naps or plays, strength train at home. Build a workout around push-ups, lunges, walking lunges, squats (sitting in a chair then standing up), calf raises (going up and down on your toes when you’re standing on a stair) and tricep dips.

Try to do eight to 12 reps and two sets of each exercise.

You can also use easy at-home equipment such as resistance bands and hand weights.

One study found that women who had two to four drinks a day took in nearly 30 percent more calories overall than nondrinkers.

Keep tabs on how much you’re pouring: experts consider four ounces equal to one serving, or about one-fourth to one-half of a big goblet.

n Lie #4: I can get by on five hours of sleep a night. ✔ Reality Check:

Skimping on shut-eye is okay every once in a while, but getting fewer

than seven hours a night regularly will make you moody, irritable and less productive.

“Sleep debt makes multitasking and the ability to focus more difficult,” said Clete A. Kushida, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford University Center for Human Sleep Research in Palo Alto, California.

The heart health consequences are pretty steep, too. Getting less than seven hours of sleep each night can increase your risk of high blood pressure, which is one of the leading risks for heart disease and stroke. Moreover, being a sleep underachiever can lead to weight gain.

People who typically get five hours a night also have 15 percent higher levels of ghrelin—a hormone that can stimulate appetite—than those who get eight hours.

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of heart disease by increasing blood pressure, LDL cholesterol levels and blood sugar.

Excess weight also makes your heart work harder to send blood to all the cells in your body.

To get more sleep, try to go to bed earlier, such as 9:30 p.m. If that’s not possible, try to grab an afternoon nap whenever you can.

eeping the romance alive in a relationship requires effort. When women feel their romantic relationships becoming stagnant, they often blame the man in their life for not being romantic enough.

However, 44 percent of men say it bothers them “a lot” that their wife or girlfriend isn’t more romantic, according to a study of 80,000 participants by author Chrisanna Northrup. So why not take the first step, and give your honey the romance they’re craving with these tips: Be spontaneous. What keeps relationships alive early on is the excitement of spontaneity, which lends itself to discovery about each other and new things.

Porter and Nanci Cooley believe that as long as you’re introducing new things into your relationship, you can keep moving forward.
