The crime, the call and the conviction: Seniors integral in stopping crime in Montrose County

By Bob Cox lmost any criminal investigator will tell you that the secret to solving most crimes is having someone tell who did it. That one phone call, email or personal contact often provides the missing piece of information that leads to getting dangerous criminals off the streets or solving other major crimes.

A

Among the tools lauded by law enforcement are those that provide a forum for the average citizen to give information without revealing their identity. The Montrose Regional Crime Stoppers (MRCS) and Operation Game Thief (OGT) programs allow citizens to do just that.

The Montrose Area Crime Stoppers was first started in the early 1980s, but slowly faded away until it was officially dissolved in 2013.

About four years ago, the Montrose region witnessed a phoenix

of sorts when a new and vibrant organization emerged from the ashes. Under the leadership of John W. Nelson, the new effort resulted in a 501(C)(3) corporation under a new name.

According to the Uniform Crime Reports, the City of Montrose and Montrose County have had significant increases in some crime categories. Probably the most disturbing statistic for the city is motor vehicle thefts, which increased from 59 in 2016 to 117 in 2017. Montrose County Sheriff’s report shows a 65 percent rise in the same category. Those reports also show that the number of arrests has increased, which is where MRCS shines brightest.

“I don’t think there’s anything more important to you as you get older other than health care and personal safety,” said Nelson, 76, adding that most of the organization’s board members are seniors.

times don’t want everyone to know that they are providing such information. Under the Crime Stoppers umbrella, those people can remain anonymous.

Informants are also eligible to receive a cash reward if their tip results in an arrest.

The internet, email and social media have greatly enhanced the efficiency of gathering information and the MRCS has been very successful in channeling that information to local law enforcement authorities.

“We know we have been helped,” said Nelson. “We have authorized $8,100 in payouts this year. While not all of that has been claimed, it shows just how active the program has been.”

Montrose County Undersheriff Adam Murdy agreed.

“By far, the best information we get through Crime Stoppers is related to fugitives,” he said.

Murdy also opines that many of the crimes, including domestic violence, burglary and theft, are often the

result of a pervasive drug abuse problem, which he thinks Crime Stoppers is having more of an impact on.

Nelson encouraged citizens to get involved in preventing or stopping crime by keeping their eyes open, starting a neighborhood watch program and calling Crime Stoppers to turn in a crook or give information on a crime. They can also help support the program, which is funded entirely by donations.

MRCS routinely posts a list of fugitives, complete with photographs, online at www.montroseregional crimestoppers.com. If you have information about these individuals or another crime, call MRCS at 249-8500.

Crime Stoppers has also teamed up with www.p3tips.com, a crime tip software that provides global service for those wanting to report information on a crime or fugitive.

PUTTING A STOP TO POACHING

Operation Game Thief is another call-in tip program that relates directly with poaching wildlife.

Headed up by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), it has been one of the most successful informant tip programs in the country. There are similar programs in 49 states.

“Our best poaching cases come from the public through Operation Game Thief,” said Renzo DelPiccolo, area wildlife manager for CPW’s Montrose office.

By some estimates, poachers kill nearly as many animals as legitimate hunters, and often they’re the ones responsible for the killing of non-game and endangered animals as well.

hunters, but we want to very much distinguish between hunters and poachers,” DelPiccolo said.

Over the years the OGT information has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, some of which are waived in return for a donation made to the program.

The incentive-based donations, according to DelPiccolo, largely fund the program, although other donations are routinely received.

He said the Montrose office received 30 beneficial referrals from the program in 2017.

DelPiccolo credits the success of OGT and many other CPW programs to its dedicated volunteers, who are mostly retirees.

Poaching is rampant, even in Montrose. DelPiccolo said crimes runs the whole gamut, from those that are mild or unintentional to commercial operations that use highly sophisticated equipment.

“I can’t overstate how much we appreciate the volunteers and their contribution to all the different things they do for us,” he said.

“We value their support as well because once they become part of the team, whether it’s being on the OGT board or being a volunteer at a fishing clinic, we know that those folks are supporting us in public.

They’re putting our message out there.”

by promoting OGT at fairs and expos and educating citizens on making a call when they think someone might be poaching.

“Years ago, when we re-introduced moose to the Grand Mesa…before the hunting season, they would go and visit the hunting camps and talk to the folks and hand out a leaflet educating them that there were now moose on the Grand Mesa and to be more careful of their shot,” he said. “I think that was really successful. We’ve had very few moose killed on the Grand Mesa, especially compared to other areas.”

Callers receive a code number and their identity remains anonymous.

Citizens involved in both organizations agree that without the cooperation and involvement of the public at-large, neither program would be successful. One call may be all that is needed to lead to apprehension and conviction. ■ WWW.BEACONSENIORNEWS.COM |

Potential poacher? What to look for and what to report From cpw.state.co.us Obvious signs of poaching include hunting out of season, hunting at night using spotlights, and taking more than the legal limit. The purchase of resident licenses by non-residents constitutes another violation that impacts wildlife management. If you think someone might be poaching, provide as much information as you can.

Essential information includes: The violation date and time Location of the incident (as exact as possible) A description of the violation: number of shots heard, type of weapon, etc.

The number of suspects, names and/or identifying features such as age, height, hair color, clothes, etc.

Vehicle description including type, year, color and license number If you know how a poached animal is being transported, or where it is being stored, tell us.

Include any other information you think may be pertinent to the case as soon as possible.

spent last month helping a close friend take over the affairs of her aging parents. Her mother was adapting to assisted living and her father’s failing health transitioned quickly from bad to worse, and ultimately to a fatal heart attack.

Her parents live in western Colorado, but she lives on the East Coast.

My friend was able to arrange all the powers of attorney during a trip to Colorado after her father had a small heart attack earlier in the month. Little did she know that her father would pass a few days after she returned home.

Helping her through all of this has caused me to think a lot about the impossibility to simultaneously grieve and dig through unsorted digital or tangible piles of clutter, looking for important information, such as an account number, password or title for a car.

When I was a full-time computer guy, the majority of my clients were seniors. Many couples have one member who is somewhat tech-savvy and one who is not.

It was not unusual for me to get a call from the spouse who rarely touched technology asking for help.

When the spouse or family member who handles all of the finances and digital communication suddenly passes, it can make the loss even more disorienting.

For some people, the only records of family phone numbers, photos, passwords and finances are stored inside the computer.

If this is the case for you or a loved one, please consider taking actions that will prevent a difficult time from becoming unbearable. Keep in mind this doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with age—an accident or illness can cause problems for anyone.

Don’t make your puzzles too hard to solve. Many people try to hide tangible valuables and valuable data (such as passwords) in complicated locations. Hide your passwords in reasonable places and tell a trusted friend or family member where to find them.

Print your passwords somewhere. It doesn’t matter whether you use a password manager like LastPass.com or a traditional Rolodex.

Print your will. Many people write one, even if it’s not formal, and save it in their computer. Print it out and store it somewhere.

Print your most important photos. If you have photos that are precious to you, spend the 25 cents or less to have them printed. Using a service like SnapFish, you can send photos directly from your phone and receive archival hard copies in the mail within days.

Use marked envelopes and filing systems. Don’t put important papers into piles or throw everything into a single folder. This applies to digital files and folders as well. ■

Could we not discuss politics?

Dear Old Bag: My wife has been pushing for us to move into an independent retirement community. I tell her we are too young and I’m not ready for that. We both enjoy reading your column and she suggested we see what you think. DW Plus One Dear DW and One: I could tell you tales of many couples who waited to make this decision—stories where one of them developed health problems and no longer qualified or where one of them died, leaving the other with the decision all by themselves. What is it you think you are too young for? Is it the freedom to travel and not worry about your home? Is it the freedom from home and yard care, or from cooking for your wife, or the freedom to pursue your hobbies or develop new ones? I could go on. Making a decision like this is a philosophical move from material to meaning. What is really going to matter in the years ahead? Think about it. Good luck. OB Dear Old Bag: My husband and I are friends with another couple, and we take turns hosting get-togethers at our homes. We mostly have an enjoyable time when we go to their house, but somehow they always seem to discuss politics. We don’t share the same stance on politics and it makes me very uncomfortable. They speak as if everyone who has a brain would agree with them. I don’t want to go over there anymore. My husband doesn’t like it either, but thinks we should grin and bear it. What do you think? LL Dear LL: I think it’s very rude to talk about your political viewpoint unless asked, or if you don’t know the leanings of your guests. There was a day and age when a good political discussion was okay, but in today’s climate, one must be very careful about causing uproar with their opinions. I grew up with a dad who was an Iowa republican and a mom who was a Kentucky democrat. They had many lively discussions, leaving me to understand that there are two sides to every story. At your next get-together, I think it would be perfectly okay to say something like, “Could we please not discuss politics?” If they ask why, be honest and tell them it makes you uncomfortable. Good luck. OB Dear Old Bag: I am a 59-year-old guy who has been dating a 55-year-old woman I met on a dating site. I really like this gal, but she insists on paying her way for everything. I am beginning to feel like a cheapskate. Is this the new dating protocol? Should I ask her why she feels it’s necessary? The man produces the title and necessary paperwork and hands over the keys to the loan officer, and tells him the car is parked on the street in front of the bank.

After the man leaves, the loan officer, the bank’s president and their colleagues enjoy a good laugh at the man for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan.

One of the employees drives the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the wealthy man returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $23.07.

Dreaming in color: Nothing beats fall in New England Story and photos by Melanie Wiseman ast year, my husband, Dan, and I had a travel epiphany. It seems we were funneling our travel funds toward annual trips to faraway countries like Peru, Cuba and New Zealand. While there’s nothing wrong with that, we realized we were missing some of the most spectacular places right here in the U.S.

So last fall, we planned what would be the first of many homeland

adventures. A friend from New England helped us plan what would be a memorable experience of fall colors, rich history and pristine communities in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. If you’ve never been, this trip’s a must!

MAINELY QUAINT We bypassed the congestion of Boston, and flew directly to Portland, Maine, where we rented a car for 12 days. We had a general route in mind, but had an open,

flexible schedule, letting the trip be a journey of spur-of-the-moment discovery.

Acadia National Park was our initial Maine destination, but not before traveling up the coast via Highway 1 and taking in the simplicity of quaint harbor towns like Camden.

It didn’t take long for us to discover many things about Maine that were a fun contrast to the southwest.

For one, there were no RV sale lots, but plenty of boat yards. The streets made us smile with names like Happy Town Road, Pretty Marsh Road and Hogan’s Elbow Road—avenues that might you lead you to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts or ice-cream shop (both which we found about every five miles).

The state’s name also made a clever pun for many local businesses, which had names and slogans like “Mainely Used Cars,” “Mainely Cats” and “Chow Maine.”

Following a stop at Windsor Chairmakers in Ellsworth, we began our three-day exploration of Acadia National Park. Though there are endless lodging options inside and outside the park, we enjoyed our stay at the Café Dry Dock & Inn in Southwest Harbor, where we feasted on crab cakes, lobster rolls and blueberry pie. Yum!

A scenic 27-mile park loop connects Acadia’s lakes, mountains and rugged seashore. We went on coastal hikes, rode bikes on the historic carriage roads, and hiked to dramatic ocean vistas on Cadillac Mountain, the park’s highest point.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD IN NEW HAMPSHIRE Although warm weather delayed the fall colors, it didn’t hamper a beautiful countryside drive through Maine on Highway 2. New Hampshire’s White Mountains enveloped us as we entered the state near Conway. A brief stop at the wellstaffed Pinkham Notch visitor center gave us the information we needed to climb Mount Washington, the Northeast’s highest peak at 6,288 feet.

Although Washington is foggy 300 days a year, we were greeted by a clear, blue day and were rewarded at the summit with a clear view of five states and Canada. We met people from all over the world on our journey up the mountain and made frequent stops to take in breathtaking views.

The Kancamagus (Kang-ah-mangus) Scenic Byway across New Hampshire was at the top of my mustsees list. This leisurely winding drive is full of history, waterfalls, covered bridges and scenic overlooks that we enjoyed as the fall colors finally began to pop.

As we drove, the White Mountains gave way to the gorgeous rolling hills of eastern Vermont. A tiny cabin at Point Comfort on Joe’s Pond in Danville, Vermont was one of our favorite finds. Since there were no restaurants in this tiny community, we made our way to the local grocery store and found some delicious chowder at the deli.

On the way to Burlington, we learned about the process of making maple syrup—a Vermont staple—at Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, an eighth generation family-owned maple syrup farm.

We made an unplanned stop in Montpelier, the capital of Vermont and a dream-like community that was right out of the movies. The locals were very friendly and a senior volunteer gave us a behind-thescenes tour of the capitol building.

If Music be the Food of Love, Play On! Music has long been a staple of life in Montrose and that isn’t about to change. In fact, Montrose is growing with even more music venues and more live concerts that this summer is sure to be one to remember. Here’s a rundown of what music lovers can expect from downtown venues in the coming months.

Intrinzik (512 E. Main St., www.in trinzikvenue.com), the newest music venue in town, has certainly shaken up the live music scene by bringing in a range of artists from across Colorado and as far away as Israel via Nashville (that was Eleanor Tallie).

Owner Josh Fabien opened Intrinzik in August 2017 (which means special one-year anniversary shows are in the works) after realizing that Montrose had sufficiently moved in the right direction to make the concept viable.

Hosting an average of two to three bands per week, Intrinzik is the most prolific live music venue in Montrose.

At the other end of downtown is Healthy Rhythm Art Gallery (68 S. Grand Ave., www.healthyrhythm.net), which doubles as a space for artists to create, exhibit and sell their artwork, and a live performance venue that showcases both acclaimed and upand-coming musicians.

Opened in 2010 by Ken Vail and Jimmy Lang in Fairfield, Texas, Healthy Rhythm relocated to Montrose in June 2015 and has hosted more than 30 concerts with more than 40 local, regional, national and international musicians, including Sweden’s FIA as part of her Legacy of Light World Tour. Healthy Rhythm currently has eight shows lined up this summer with

Summer is also a fantastic time to get outside and enjoy some al fresco tunes, and Montrose has you covered.

Horsefly (846 E. Main St., www.horseflybrewing.com) is the oldest brewery in town and a Montrose staple for locally crafted beer, bar snacks and live music. While the frigid winters don’t stop the good people at Horsefly from hosting live music, the venue really comes into its own when summer breaks and the large outdoor patio is put to good use.

The next band to take the stage will be Ulterior Motive, a local rock band that plays covers from the ’80s to today.

The members guarantee to have people up on their feet and dancing. Other bands performing in the coming weeks include Jedi George, Neon Sky, Gotta Be, and All About Me. Watch as the park is transformed into a tiny live music venue. If live music isn’t enough to get you out to the Pocket Park, there will also be free hot dogs and local beer available for purchase.

With two evenings of live music per week (open mic on Wednesdays with compere Donny Morales and local acts on Saturdays), good food and great beer, Horsefly is a popular choice with beer and music lovers year round.

So many ways to spend time in the garden In July, we get to be gardeners in every sense of the word.

There are so many ways to spend time in the garden, from tending to our crops and harvesting the fruits of our labor to sowing more seeds for fall and winter bounties.

But amidst all the things to do, be sure to take time to rest in the shade, smell the flowers, watch hummingbirds and enjoy the paradise you’ve created.

Harvest broccoli crowns while they’re still tightly in bud, before the florets begin to open up and lose flavor. You can also harvest the lower leaves of broccoli and cabbage plants, slice them into strips and simmer them in salt water.

Harvest lettuce in the morning and soak in cold water before putting it in the fridge. This process of hydrocooling your greens makes for crisper, longer-lasting greens.

To encourage fuller growth and vitality, harvest basil by cutting the main stem, taking about a third of the plant. Cut just above a leaf pair, rather than leaving a stub. Keep your basil in a small vase of water, as you would a cut flower, or set it out to dry, instead of storing it in the fridge.

SEED NOW, PLANT LATER

We are at the peak of summer’s heat, so continue sowing lettuce seed every three weeks for a continuous harvest of tender greens.

You can also sow another round of root vegetables to harvest through fall and into winter.

Brassicas like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower thrive in cooler temperatures. Start brassicas from

seed this month so you can plant them in August and enjoy a fall crop of these hearty veggies. Brassicas germinate best at 65 to 75 degrees, so start seedlings indoors if you can.

BE A SEED SAVER

Saving seeds opens up a whole new door into the world of gardening.

By saving seeds from the plants you grow, you’re helping preserve biodiversity and sustainability.

When seeds are grown, saved and replanted in the same place, adaptations develop that make for tastier, more resilient food crops.

By selecting seeds from stand-out crops and replanting them the following year, you are participating in the evolution of plants, encouraging specific traits like frost and heat tolerance, pest resistance and richness in flavor to carry on.

If you’re new to seed saving, start with self-pollinating crops like lettuce, peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. To save seeds from wet-fruited crops like tomatoes, leave a few fruits on the vine past the time you would harvest the fruits for eating so that the seeds are fully mature.

For dry-fruited crops like lettuce, simply wait until seed pods form and begin to dry, then harvest and make sure they’re completely dry before storing. ■

America: the land that I love

By Lynn Gendusa ’ve had the privilege of traveling beyond the hills where I was born to many places in this great land we call America. How many times have I flown from coast to coast and gazed at my native earth from above? The land where majestic peaks dot the deserts of the west and the green of the east, and where flat patches of farming land form a beautiful quilt over much of America’s center. Where the rivers, lakes, ponds and oceans that feed our portion of earth glimmer in the sun as blue skies frame it all.

I

I have sailed in Maine, canoed in Georgia, climbed the skyscrapers of New York and the trees of North Carolina. I have reached to the sky in Colorado and touched the sacred ground of fallen soldiers in Virginia.

I climbed into the Grand Canyon, hiked in California and walked through the blue grass of Kentucky.

In South Dakota, I watched the buffalo roam as four past presidents watched me from Mount Rushmore.

I have crossed the country twice by car and witnessed the diverseness of the land and its people.

America is relatively new. We don’t have the castles or remnants of old Roman civilizations that other countries do. We don’t have kings or queens, tsars or regimes. Instead, our power is in our freedom.

The freedom that so many have given their lives for and still fight to maintain is where we find our unique beauty. We are not a land of old; we are a land where opportunity allows us to be new all the time.

Americans have seen their share of division, hatred, wars, apathy, and heartache, but somewhere in the depth of each American is a need to achieve unity, love, peace, care, and joy.

We can renew because we have the freedom to do so. We have the

right to protest, protect, pray and proceed as this great nation we call “united.”

In Tennessee, near where I was born, lies the grave of John Walker.

He immigrated, as many did, from Scotland in the mid 1700s. He and his six brothers fought for our freedom in the Revolutionary War. Generations would follow John.

They lived among the hills of the East and then moved westward.

They searched to find their place in the world because John and those like him won them the freedom to do so.

Beside John’s grave is a tiny American flag. He died not as a Scotsman, but as an American.

This July 4, perhaps we choose not to listen to the news about our divisiveness, but instead walk outside and pick up the soil, letting the grains of dirt fall through our fingers because this is our land—a land that reminds us to continue to pray and fight for her.

Montrose bans the use and sale of fireworks Due to dry conditions, the Montrose City Council has decided to ban the use and sale of fireworks.

The ban is temporary and takes effect immediately. The City hopes to move forward with the public Fourth of July fireworks display on Sunset Mesa. Whether the show continues depends on the approval from the fire district the day of the event.

ard sale season is here. I can’t wait to spend the change I’ve been saving all winter to purchase stuff I don’t need and will most likely never use.

If you’re like me, you rarely leave a garage sale empty handed. There’s always the possibility of finding a lid for the sugar bowl I lost five years ago or a matching slipper to replace the one Rover chewed up last week.

Sometimes people find treasures.

A lost Renoir might be discovered hiding behind a cheap dime store print or a secret stash of forgotten $50 bills found rolled inside a teapot. But the chances of such good luck are rare.

I remember the days when yard sales were unheard of because people never sold, threw or gave away anything.

Men were as thrifty as their wives.

The backyard was often the resting place for rusty cars, piles of tires and stacks of used lumber.

Every farmer had a hoard of iron from bits and pieces of broken machinery. Tradition and economic circumstances dictated frugality in all areas, whether it was the house or the barn. Everything stayed put because you never knew when you might need it, and there was no running to Walmart for a bit of string or a bag of 16-penny nails.

I look forward to the weekly treasure hunt, not because I need something, but because the thrill is too strong to resist.

Dishes are my weakness. One day, I came across a box of dishes made in Bavaria. I went home and unpacked my china. There were dinner plates and varying amounts of cups, saucers, soup bowls, dessert bowls and serving pieces. I’d hit the jackpot. I searched eBay until I had

I live alone and never invite anyone to dinner, so why would I collect so many dishes? Was I planning a party? Who would I invite? I don’t even know 13 people who would accept my invitation. Even if I did, my place is small—where would I seat guests? As I carefully wrapped the pieces and repacked them in a large, sturdy box, I wrote short notes explaining my reasons for the purchase.

Some notes said I hoped my daughter, Stephanie, used them. Others said my nieces could divvy them up if Stephanie didn’t want them. One note said I bought them because collecting dishes is my hobby. The real reason I wrote on the last card and put it in the bottom of the box.

“I collect pretty things to leave to the people I love. Although you never had time to get to know me, maybe these dishes or my collections of Stiffel lamps and ceramic chickens will give you a peek into my world. I always hoped I could share them with you, but you were busy with your own lives, and that’s okay.”

When I’m gone, I hope Stephanie will actually look through my stuff instead of dropping it off at Goodwill without a second glance.

We never know, do we, what will become of our prized possessions. I guess it really doesn’t matter.

Do we ever question why we love garage sales? Do we ever wonder what it is we’re really searching for?

Maybe the answer is as simple as frequenting such sales is a pleasant way to pass a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe that’s all there is to it. I hope so, because searching for something intangible will never be found in someone else’s belongings. It’s right there in our own heart, and it’s not for sale at any price. ■

In the early 1990s, I left a management position so that I wouldn’t have to travel on business so much and so I could indulge my dream of doing some freelance writing. The first person to give me that opportunity was the charming and talented Susan Capps. My parents were recently retired and I thought I could both learn from and contribute to the BEACON. I remember writing about their 50th wedding anniversary and the fact that they had met in kindergarten, about travel adventures my husband and I went on, and about my experience at the national AARP convention when it was held in Denver. I went to that meeting expecting to see lots of old fogies meandering around. Boy was I wrong. Instead I found vital, active, interesting people charging around, trying to fit in as many classes and lectures and as much fun as they could. I was totally inspired…Now I find myself turning 70 in a week—how can that be? My folks this year will celebrate anniversary number 72 and of course, we all still read and enjoy the BEACON each month. So thanks for continuing this great publication that has provided so much information and enjoyment to so many people over the years.” - Cathy W.
