Be a hero: Donate blood!

I

t’s the height of summer, and most of us are busy playing outside or traveling. That’s great news for us, but not for blood banks—according to the American Red Cross, the number of new donors typically declines by more than 30 percent in summer months. The demand for life-saving procedures, on the other hand, never takes a vacation.

Two weeks ago, a few staff members and I visited St. Mary’s Blood Center to donate. We were seen right away, and the process was quick and virtually painless. We even got free juice and cookies from a handsome phlebotomist who thought my coworker was going to faint. We tried to assure him that she’s always that pale, but who turns down free cookies?

I guess what I’m saying is, go give blood! Then be sure to pick up next month’s BEACON for a story about how one family donates blood in honor of one local man. Blood donors really are heroes.

Pets are good for their people

he French novelist Colette once wrote, “Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet.”

She may have been onto something—pet owners have always sworn that their four-legged friends make them feel better, and research has backed this up. Study after study has shown that pets are good for people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with pets generally have decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which correlate to a reduced risk of heart attack. Studies also show that pets decrease feelings of loneliness and increase opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities and socialization. Owning pets is thought to decrease a person’s overall stress levels and increase their sense of purpose.

Purpose is something seniors often crave after retirement, so getting a pet at that point in life can be a great idea. That’s what Ann Davis, 79, did.

Her daughter surprised her with a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix named Tinker.

She’s a smiley dog with a readily wagging tail, and it’s impossible to tell that she was abused before Davis met her.

“I’ve helped her adjust to the real thing, which is love,” Davis said.

Tinker had been mistreated and kicked. She was adopted and returned to the shelter four times before Davis gave her a home.

“She was very afraid at first, and she didn’t let me out of her sight.

With shelter dogs, you have to be patient,” said Davis.

Her patience and love have brought out the best in Tinker, and the relationship benefits Davis, too. She lives at Brookdale Sunrise Creek, a residential care facility for seniors. Having Tinker as a roommate brightens up her life.

“She’s been a good friend,” Davis said. “It’s always nice to open the door and see that she’s happy to see me.”

Pet-approved senior living Unfortunately, many seniors struggle to own or keep their pets because of their living arrangements. Landlords often charge extra for pets, or don’t allow them at all. That can prevent older adults from experiencing all the positive benefits of pet ownership.

Thankfully, local senior living facilities understand how important a furry friend can be. Spring Creek Chalet is also extremely pet friendly.

Co-owner Reiner Seelhoff said they opened their independent senior living center to pets about 10 years ago due to a number of requests from residents. Since then, he’s seen several benefits.

“For some residents, having a pet gets them up and moving,” he said.

“A couple neighbors push each other to get out and walk their dogs. Some other people don’t want to be social, but with a pet, they aren’t alone.”

Werden adopted Maggie after experiencing a significant loss.

“I got her when my husband died,” Werden explained. “I went to the pound, and told them, ‘I want an old dog that’s mellow,’ and that’s exactly what I have.”

cially for seniors. Thankfully, Maggie’s sweet, calm demeanor seems to be a perfect match for Werden. Davis and Seelhoff said that seniors should consider safety, too.

“It’s important to have an older dog that doesn’t jump or trip you,” Davis advised.

Seelhoff recalled one resident whose family bought him a large, active puppy that ended up being a safety hazard.

“He loved that dog, but eventually he realized the dog had to go,” Seelhoff explained.

A life companion While the wrong pet can be a danger, the right pet can be something of a caretaker. Tinker is exceptionally in tune with Davis.

“I have been ill, and she thinks she’s my nurse,” Davis said. “When I had to go in the ambulance, she didn’t bark at [the paramedics] or anything. She just sat there looking at me like, ‘This is good.’”

Pets can help their people through life changes. Werden wasn’t quite ready to move to a senior living facility, but her family was concerned about her living alone. Maggie has made the transition a little easier.

Werden said she enjoys living with Maggie at the Chalet, as the facility is convenient for pets. Each apartment has a patio door right off the living area that makes taking a dog outside very simple. Deer visit frequently, and cement pathways meander through gardens that cover the 18acre property.

The greatest benefit of having a pet is companionship. Both Maggie and Tinker are happy to curl up on their owners’ laps, and the friendship between dog and human is evident.

“It would be terribly different without her,” Davis said. “It’s a comfort having her around.”

Staff members at both Brookdale Sunrise Creek and Spring Creek Chalet are happy to help customers with pets because they clearly improve the residents’ lives. ■

Old-timer George Decker weaves real cowboy tale in memoirs

Real-life cowboy George Decker continues to explore.

B

orn on a ranch in the Colorado Rockies, George Decker never knew his mother. She died of uremic poisoning two days after his birth. As was custom in those early times, relatives stepped in to care for the infant.

Baby George was sent to live with his maternal aunt and uncle, first for a few days, then weeks. His stay eventually stretched to 19 years.

Decker, now 82, recently completed a memoir, detailing the life of a young boy who grew up cowboying in the rapidly fading American West. His adventures are detailed in straight talk right out of a cheap drugstore novel.

Adventures on the ranch Decker became an authentic cowboy on his adopted ranch, learning to care for sheep and cattle, and developing a love for the West. He rode his first pony at about age 3, helped tend the “bum lambs” that had also lost

their mothers and eventually traded up to run a small herd of cattle. He spent all his spare time exploring the streams and canyons of the small ranch and nearby Bureau of Land Management property.

“Myrtle and Ormand [Hurt] were my mom and dad as I was growing up,” Decker wrote, “and their subsequent children, Orville, Walter and Nettie Mae, became my brothers and sister.”

The Hurts also cared for another boy, Bud Pross, the son of Decker’s great-uncle. Quite a bit older than Decker, Pross helped keep an eye on the little cowpoke and brought him along on his chores, once allowing the little boy to nap in the shade while he built a fence.

“One day he came back and I was gone,” Decker wrote. “Hearing a commotion, he checked. There I was, trying to walk up to a wild range cow to pet her on the face. He said she was blowing snot all over me but

didn’t have nerve to continue the charge as I kept advancing.”

Decker tagged along for all kinds of adventures on the ranch, shadowing an eccentric shepherd named Tex Reams as he herded the sheep wherever he could find pasture—including on BLM land.

“I loved to stay with Tex in the sheep camps, and he would, of course, tell me instances of things that happened to him,” wrote Decker. “One was about being asleep in the tent and hearing a noise. When he rolled over to pick up his .30-30, instead of feeling the cold steel of the rifle, he came up with a handful of warm fur. It was a curious mountain lion that nearly tore the tent down getting out. Tex said he didn’t know who was the most startled, he or the lion.”

Decker continues to explore, although he’s left cowboying behind for amateur archaeology. He and his wife live on a small horse property overlooking the Colorado River, and his home reflects his love of all things old. His research has led him to areas around Mesa, Delta and Montrose counties, where the long history of the Ute tribes reveals itself in petroglyphs carved into the Indian sandstone. Occasionally, he leads trips out to study the ancient carvings.

Exploring, preserving the past Decker and his trusty old dog, Durango, recently lead a ragtag group of older explorers eager to see what could be found on Whitewater’s cliffsides.

The group went through an old fence, then jumped over a small creek as nimbly as possible and began the trek up a sloping hillside, dodging low piñon tree brushes and stands of cactus. Decker led the way to a spot with numerous petroglyphs carved above small caves that may have served as temporary shelter for early humans.

This part of the country was well traveled by tribes going back and forth seeking game. The types of drawings and their sophistication led Decker to believe that talented and not-so-talented artists left their marks to indicate the types of animals in the area and leave maps.

Along the trail, those with sharp eyes regularly picked up evidence of granite flecks that could have been left behind during the making of spear points and arrowheads. Any real evidence of these items has long since disappeared from the area.

Decker refers to items of historical significance as “leave ‘ems,” admiring what he finds but leaving it in its place.

Today, evidence of wildlife can still be seen along the minimally marked trail. Decker took the opportunity to regale the group with the story of the time he came upon a large wolf while exploring a creek bed as a youngster.

“He looked at me and I looked at him,” Decker said. “I was really small and young. I guess he decided I wasn’t worth the trouble and ran off. Those days are gone now. You don’t see those animals around here anymore” His voice sounded a little wistful— it was that of a cowboy remembering days gone by. ■

The bat and the blind dog

I

t was dark, lumpy and crumpled-looking. At first, I thought it was a faded camellia blossom—a regular gift from my cat, Tuppence. But just before I reached down to scoop it up off the bedroom floor, I took a

closer look. I saw its little head and body and wings pulled in protectively to its sides. It was a bat.

Sensing my nearness, the little bat suddenly broke his silence and began asking for help. He clicked over and over again, desperately trying to communicate with me, letting me know he was frightened and confused, lost and exhausted and wanted nothing more than to be returned to the outdoors. Even Tuppence, who was watching and listening intently, didn’t try to harm him or upset him any more than he already was.

Using a garden glove and an empty glass, I carried him out into the night and nestled him down on a thick bed of ivy, not far from where a bat house is nailed to a gnarly old magnolia tree. I trusted his calls would bring others to his assistance. Bats do that.

They watch out for each other, helping the injured and ill among them.

was nowhere to be seen.

I was particularly intrigued by this creature’s instinctive method of communication due to a ritual I had recently observed taking place between my elderly dog, Indy, and a neighborhood dog down the street.

Indy and I often walk past the house where the other dog lives—an Australian Shepherd—who has appointed himself the fence police.

When he sees someone approaching on foot, the Aussie barks with his loudest voice, stirring up as much dust and attitude as possible.

He used to startle me, even when I saw him coming. But Indy remained nonplused. He simply ignored the confrontation the first few times.

Then he decided to do something about it.

Indy began “talking” softly to the Aussie, establishing a non-threatening presence. He stood quietly close to the fence, allowing the neighbor dog to sniff him from head to tail. He gave him a leisurely, unedited version of his story—his health, his age, his

personality, his history. I just held up my end of the leash and kept quiet.

Indy notably kept his own face turned away from the other dog.

Finally, he politely left his signature and walked to the other side of the street.

Indy repeated his story to the dog two days in a row, and the Aussie hasn’t barked at us since. Now he comes to the fence whenever we pass by to watch and listen intently, but never aggressively. Indy continues to speak to him wisely with an open heart and peaceful energy.

Tolstoy said, “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town.”

Perhaps this observation applies to our lives as well as our fiction.

Perhaps we are all strangers, and all on a journey, like a bat who inexplicably finds himself inside a house, or a dog who blindly trespasses onto a strange lawn. We tell our stories in the best way we can. And we trust there is someone who wants to listen. ■

n third grade, my friends and I found a dartboard by the shallow irrigation ditch where we spent all summer keeping cool.

After we grew tired of throwing the darts into the dartboard, the grass, the walls, etc., we realized that if you throw a dart high into the air, it makes a spark when it hits the pavement. This provided hours of fun—until a dart came back down and stuck neatly into my friend’s little brother’s head, that is. He lived, and we learned a lesson about having siblings nearby when we did stuff like that.

Tools, toys and technology all have something in common: They can all be dangerous if misused. Education can prevent you from becoming a victim of the misuse of technology.

One of the biggest problems to overcome is that negative tech terms are often incorrectly used interchangeably.

Here, we’ll define some common terms that are important to know.

Clickbait Friends on Facebook love sharing articles with headlines like, “15 reasons why you shouldn’t drink water. I did No. 5 this morning!” These stories are written to get you to click on them, because when you do, the site where the story is posted makes money from its advertisers. Clicking on these won’t hurt your computer—it’s just sensationalism for profit.

Hacker This is a person or group of people who gain remote access to a computer system. It may be done to control the system or to access information stored on the computer.

Hoax A hoax doesn’t hurt your computer at all, it’s just a lie perpetuated by internet users. It can be dangerous to fall for a hoax, but it’s usually just a waste of time and better to ignore. Nobody’s giving away 15 RVs on Facebook and the government isn’t going to tax email.

Malware Any type of bad software falls under the malware category. Viruses, ransomware, extortionware, adware and bloatware are all varieties of malware.

Ransomware This type of malware scrambles all the document and image files on your computer, making it inaccessible until you pay the criminals who created the program whatever money they demand. Hospitals and schools are the most common targets of ransomware.

Scam A scam is a method used by bad guys to get you to send them money. Scams can be very simple hoaxes that con people out of their money, or complex tricks that fool you into thinking you’re giving money to a good cause.

Virus There are very few virus-like programs that can take over your computer without your permission and spread to others. Most malware today tricks you into installing it yourself. Before you install an update or agree to download a program, examine it closely.

It might be a new type of virus that antivirus programs. ■

My friends are constantly chiding me, telling me that I’m not “ready for that.” I tell them they don’t know what they’re talking about.

Where else can an old guy like me get meals, housekeeping, exercise, friendship, entertainment and be free to travel without worrying about my house?

My friends have some mistaken idea that you go to a place like that when you need care. Wrong. If you wait until you need care, you have waited too long. You can’t get in! They need to know that one’s life can change in a heartbeat. My wife died of a heart attack at age 60. I wish you would tell them, please. After class, the professor, a woman who was about 50 years old, said to me, “If they had those places for young people like me, I would move there in a minute. I would love to have a meal when I get home without cooking it, a ride to the symphony so I wouldn’t have to fight traffic, have my apartment cleaned and all that other stuff.” I think there’s a certain mindset as we grow older that causes us to stay away from retirement places. It’s almost as if people think they will catch something—like old age. Congrats to you for being a free thinker! Happy landings. OB Dear Old Bag: My husband and I just returned from our granddaughter’s wedding in another state. It was a

“destination wedding,” which is what they call it when the bride and groom choose a lovely, expensive place to get married and the family is obligated to go and spend a fortune to witness this blessed event. We were surprised that our daughter and son-in-law allowed it. Of course, my husband opened his mouth and expressed his opinion to them, which has created hard feelings. What do you think of destination weddings, and do you think my husband was out of line to say something?

Dear Old Fashioned: I have been to and enjoyed one destination wedding.

It was beautiful, lots of fun, and expensive for all concerned. My advice is 1) It’s an invitation, not a demand.

If it’s too expensive for you, don’t go.

2) If you have read my column for a while, you know I stand firm on some things. One of them is to never criticize or advise your married children or grandchildren—unless you want to damage the relationship. If they ask for your advice, give it very carefully.

You are through raising children. Just enjoy them and keep your opinions to yourself. That’s what I would do.

The light turned yellow, just in front of a driver. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating driver behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. Midrant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

A boss called one of his employees, who worked from home, about an urgent problem with one of the main computers at their company.

"Yes," came the answer.

"May I talk with her?"

Again, the small voice whispered, "No." "Is anybody else there?" asked the boss.

"Yes" whispered the child, "a policeman."

Wondering what a cop would be doing there, the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?"

"No, he's busy," whispered the child.

"Busy doing what?" asked the boss.

"Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the firemen," came the whispered answer.

The boss was growing concerned, and then he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone. "What’s that noise?"

"A hello-copper" answered the whispering voice.

"What is going on there?" asked the boss, now alarmed.

In an awed voice, the child whispered, "The search team just landed the hello-copper."

Alarmed, concerned and more than a little frustrated, the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"

They rub it and a genie comes out.

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship sank, drowning everyone but the magician and the parrot, who floated together on a piece of wood in the middle of the sea. They stared at each other with hatred but did not utter a word. This went on for a day, then two days, then three days.

The genie says, "I'll give each of you just one wish."

Finally, on the fourth day, the parrot couldn’t hold back any longer and said, "Okay, I give up. Where's the ship?"

ho wouldn’t take the opportunity to enjoy the summer weather, eat well and celebrate our nation’s heroes? On August 12, those in the Montrose area have the chance to do just that.

Each August for the past five years, Montrose’s Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans (WHAFV) has hosted the Patriot Picnic, an event that pays tribute to local veterans and the people who support them as they readjust to civilian life.

The picnic is also a way for the WHAFV to say thank you to Montrose and the surrounding Western Slope communities that have played a vital role in its success.

The picnic is free to attend, and is held each year at Bob Koch’s home. The scenic location has walking paths that lead to the river and a number of fishing ponds. Paul Chamberlain will perform live music, and there will be plenty of soft drinks and food. Local civic leaders are expected to attend.

The Patriot Picnic was designed to enable local vets to openly embrace their home community, and to give citizens the opportunity to meet and learn more about their hometown heroes. It’s also a way to familiarize civilians with the work and objectives of WHAFV. Many local businesses support the center, including Delta’s Callaway Meats, which will providing the meat for the upcoming picnic. But despite these community connections, extensive public relations efforts and other outreach, including posters and internet appeals, the WHAFV is not as well-known in town as it should be.

Gary Gratton, the local Disabled American Veterans chapter commander, said it hurts to hear people say, “I didn’t even know [it] existed!”

More than 1,400 veterans are registered with the alliance, representing soldiers from every war since World War II and every branch of the Armed Forces. They meet on a regular basis to share the experiences as well as their challenges and success in adapting to life at home. On any given Thursday morning, 90-120 veterans visit the Warrior Resource Center (WRC), WHAFV headquarters for coffee and meetings.

WHAFV is a safe place for veterans, providing a positive and healthy opportunity for social reintegration, said WRC Manager Nate Allen.

The WRC hosts ongoing peer support and social networking opportunities, as well as recognition events. Housing and food assistance, as well as Veterans Affairs benefits and counseling are available at the center.

Public attendance at the Patriot Picnic makes local support visible, while reinforcing the self-esteem and goodwill of those who have so valiantly served the nation. ■

Montrose museums are a window into local history

“Someone will move here, buy a house and discover that the house has a history. They come to us wanting to find out more.”

A

lmost every town has a museum filled with artifacts attempting to make local history interesting to the casual observer.

But Montrose museums take historical interest to a new level. The area boasts three quality museums, each offering a take on history. To visit one to the exclusion of the others, or worse yet, to not visit any, is to miss valuable insight into our heritage.

Ute Indian Museum Until recently, the Ute Indian Muse-

um, located at 17253 Chipeta Road, focused on times past. The museum first opened in 1956 on land where Ouray, the famous Ute chief, once lived. His wife, Chipeta, is interred on the site. The facility went through a remodel in the late 1990s, but its exhibits remained substantially the same, focusing on what many thought to be a long-lost tribe.

After its recent remodel, completed in June, the museum is now a bridge that connects bygone days to our contemporary world.

Representatives of the Ute Mountain Tribe, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservations have endorsed the museum’s changes. It recognizes the past, but also explores modern Ute society.

The panorama displays have been replaced, some with large, touchscreen televisions. A touch of the finger reveals not artifacts, but actual tribe leaders, who tell the story of the Ute people.

The Museum of the Mountain West On Montrose’s eastern edge is a collection of buildings that may appear to be the remnants of a small Western town. It’s actually a collection matched by few museums in the country.

Richard Fike is the founder and director of The Museum of the Mountain West, located at 68169 Miami Road. The museum is a culmination of dreams he’s had since he was just 4 years old.

Fike became a collector when he found an old clock while his father was working on the Alaska Highway.

An inscription scratched into it indicated that it had been used during the Klondike Gold Rush. By age 8, Fike had turned a good part of his parents’ home into a museum.

In theory, the Museum of the Mountain West focuses on the 75 years between 1880 and 1930. But when selection butts up against collection, some things just can’t be ignored.

Such is the case with the Mills Converter, an electronic violin that plays tunes on its own. The violin is

displayed in a recreated saloon from the 1890s, but is a product of the early 1900s.

Fike is quick to note the slight inaccuracy, but asked rhetorically, “Where else were we going to put it?

It’s too good a thing to just leave out.”

Visitors are guided through numerous recreations and displays, each with its own history lesson.

There are dental and medical offices, a general store and all the artifacts of a drug store displayed much as they were when Delta-area residents shopped there. Relocated buildings provide many more lessons in local history.

More than 30 volunteers work at the museum, many as guides through the various displays, teaching visitors about the events and lifestyle of a time gone by.

“These volunteers are what makes this whole thing work,” Fike said.

“Each of them gives a different perspective to what we have here, and that’s what makes us stand out.”

Montrose County Historical Museum The Montrose County Historical Museum, located at 21 N. Rio Grande Ave., is a true treasure, situated in the heart of the city. It’s housed in the old Denver and Rio Grande Western (DRGW) Railroad Depot, beside the tracks that had much to do with Montrose’s birth. The building was erected in 1912, when area train travel was at its peak. When DRGW ended its passenger service in the 1950s, the building saw less use and began to fall into a state of disrepair. In 1972, enthusiastic citizens convinced the railroad company to donate the property to the City for use as a museum.

Many will argue that the Montrose County Historical Museum is more of a resource to local citizens than it is a tourist attraction.

The museum houses artifacts, and contains some of the best research opportunities available for amateur (and even professional) historians.

Director Sally Johnson said her staff

received 45 requests for assistance in research projects last year. One of the most common requests is determining the history of certain houses in and around Montrose.

“Someone will move here, buy a house and discover that the house has a history. They come to us wanting to find out more,” she said.

Tourists may not fully appreciate the museum’s wood-burning art, created by local artist John Wilkes, who passed away in 2014. For many locals, however, his artwork on the bartop of the Stockmen’s Cafe is a source of pride. The artwork includes mountain and wildlife scenes, a brief history of the cafe and the names of many famous—and infamous—people who patronized the business. When the cafe closed, the bartop wound up in the museum.

How to save money while welcoming a new pet to your home

hether it’s a dog, cat or something else altogether, many people have pets that are more than just animals—they’re part of the family.

To provide the best care for a pet, you’ll want to be able to afford their needs, including basics like food and health care. With this in mind, think carefully and review your budget before deciding to welcome an animal into your family.

Choose a pet that you can afford.

While the initial cost of adopting or buying a pet is relatively small compared to the long-term expenses, the type of pet you choose does matter.

You might visit the pound and fall in love with a dog or cat. What can you do? The heart wants what the heart wants. Research is a must if you want to take cost-saving measures. Larger animal breeds may be more expensive to care for, partially because they eat more food. And if you’re taking in a dog, you’ll want to consider the cost of training, which could set you back several hundred dollars.

etween farmers markets, local farm stands and backyard gardens, our area is bursting with fresh produce. There’s nothing like some Olathe sweet corn, a sun-ripened heirloom tomato, or a juicy Palisade peach.

Not only is locally grown produce the tastiest, it’s also the healthiest. It’s easy to forget that grocery store produce has traveled hundreds of miles to get here and loses much of its nutritional value within just a few days of being harvested.

For me, taste and nutrition are reasons enough to gravitate towards local produce. Caring for our planet and supporting the local economy are also huge factors. But there’s another reason to participate in our local growing season: money in your pocket.

• Support local growers by visiting farmers markets. Talk to different vendors to learn about how they’re growing their food. Some casual digging might lead you to discover someone who’s putting your values into practice.

• Reap (and share) your bounty! For us gardeners, mid-summer is a joyous time. We get to reap the fruits of our labor, brag to our friends about all we’ve grown, swap stories and produce with other garden dwellers and share bountiful harvests with our loved ones. • Drying and dehydrating: The simplest and most hands-off approach to food preservation, drying produce is easy and effective. Air dry tender herbs by bundling and hanging them in a cool, dark place with a bit of air flow. You can spread a thin layer of herbs, edible flowers or chili peppers in a basket and lay cheesecloth over the top to keep dust away. Slice fruits and dry them in a dehydrator. Store dried produce in jars to use in dishes.

• Canning: You only need a few tools and a recipe to get started canning.

Be warned: This is one of the more time-consuming techniques.

• Fermentation: Let food and liquid sit in a jar on the counter, and wait.

There are many types of fermentation leading to fantastic eats like kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, wines and spirits.

Fermented products are full of probiotics that benefit your gut.

Whichever preservation methods you choose to explore, do some research beforehand. You may discover a new favorite food and pastime all at once! ■

VOA gives community an AdvantAge

ave you had a benefits checkup recently?

Finding resources and applying for assistance can be a daunting task for seniors and their families. Understanding the complicated language and the proper documentation required to apply is overwhelming.

Our community has an abundance of resources available to support the journey that is aging. Unfortunately, many seniors aren’t aware of local programs designed to help with medications, health care, housing and other support services.

To address this problem, Volunteers of America (VOA), working with the Region 10 Area Agency on Aging, has just opened AdvantAge Health Resource centers in Delta and Montrose. These centers offer free assistance, funded through VOA, matching clients with resource programs and to help fill out applications.

“It’s really important to help people live their most successful life, and the

new centers offer one-stop assistance to make it easier,” said VOA Case Manager Stacie Brown, coordinator of the new AdvantAge program.

Case managers provide resource information, assist with benefit applications and give referrals to other programs, such as Region 10’s Medicare assistance program. The centers have already received assistance referrals from other community agencies, such as the Center for Mental Health.

Brown, who has coordinated resources in Colorado for 19 years, said that the services the center provides are not only for seniors, but anyone.

“There are no income requirements, nor do people applying for assistance have to be on Medicaid or Medicare,” she said.

The centers also provide assistance with filling out both Single Entry Point applications for both counties.

This document enables applicants who need long-term care and are eligible for Medicaid to receive a number of services from the counties’

health and human services departments, Brown said.

Each center is also a state-certified application assistance site that can help people complete Medicaid’s long-term care forms.

Since opening in May, the AdvantAge Health Resource centers have already helped more than 50 people in person, and have answered numerous telephone inquiries. Brown will continue to divide her time between the Delta and Montrose locations until the program hires a case manager in Delta. She will then work exclusively from Montrose.

Clients can set an appointment by telephone or walk in for services.

Case managers will also do home visits if it’s difficult for the applicant to come to a center. If the case manager is not in, both centers are equipped with an inquiry box where visitors can leave messages.

The Delta AdvantAge Health Resource Center is located at the Senior CommUnity Meals office, 350 Staf-

ford Lane. The Montrose AdvantAge Health Resource Center is located at Proximity Space, 210 E. Main St. Office hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What to bring if you go To apply for Food Assistance and Colorado Works, applicants must supply a birth certificate; a photo ID; a Social Security card; verification of all income, including bank statements (checking and savings); and, if applicable, divorce decrees and/or support orders, name changes (court order) and verification of pregnancy and due date.

To apply for Adult Medicaid, Old Age Pension and Long Term Care, applicants must also supply burial policies, insurance policies, oil or mineral rights, rent receipts or mortgage statements, property tax statements, trust agreements, vehicle registration and verification of income or other benefits.

Beacon Bits Veterans alliance welcomes new executive director Former sergeant first class William K. Montgomery, a native of Olathe, joins the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans as its executive director. Sgt. First Class Montgomery entered the Army in 1997. His deployments include two in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and one in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He has served in a number of non-commissioned officer leadership positions, including acting as operations sergeant major for 18 months. Among Montgomery’s awards and decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster and the Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He is engaged to Olathe’s Stephanie Bergstrom, and they have five children.

t’s one thing to savor that aroma and taste of crispy bacon slices alongside two eggs sunny-side up, or nestling across a slice of cold ripe tomato on a bed of crunchy lettuce in a BLT, or to order a Cobb salad knowing a generous helping of crispy bacon will be included.

It’s quite another to find your local diner serving a maple bacon ice-cream sundae or discover your deep-dish pizza now comes with a crispy bacon wrap around the edges.

Bacon is becoming the new specialty food for America.

We’ve gone from bacon bits to everything bacon!

Bacon mania has hit America. Ebenezer Cooke warned us in 1708 that the mania was coming in his poem, “The Sot Weed Factor,” complaining that the food in America was all “bacon-infused.” And he was right. More than 300 years later, bacon is still a top-selling food.

Sales climbed 9.5 percent in 2013, with more than $4 billion spent on bacon in the U.S. With the increase of sales, culinary experts have expanded their recipes to include even more bacon.

Bacon is the side and back cuts of pork. In the U.S. and Canada, it usually comes from the pork belly.

Bacon can be smoked, broiled, fried, baked or grilled. As a food, it’s both versatile and flavorful.

So versatile, in fact, that restaurants now serve bacon cheddar tater tots, those kid-favorites now doused in cheese and liberally sprinkled with bacon bits for the adult palate. They serve bacon egg muffins, where the egg is cooked in a bacon-lined muffin tin. There are bacon-wrapped hot dogs with cheese and a fried egg in the bun. Bacon is wrapped around steak, shrimp, chicken, pork chops, mushrooms and asparagus, and put in sandwiches along with baconnaise (bacon-flavored mayonnaise) and honey jalapeño bacon.

In a recent survey compiled

by Smithfield, 65 percent of all Americans would support bacon as their national food. And for those who don’t eat pork, bacon can also be made from beef, lamb, chicken, goat or turkey.

Dip your favorite bacon slices in chocolate for an additional treat.

For those who don’t like bacon, there’s something for you—a bacon cake, made without bacon, that looks like bacon strips.

What happened to bacon bits with sour cream on baked potatoes, or bacon bits floating in creamy cheddar potato soup? Now we have bacon in appetizers, entrees and desserts. Precooked bacon is now sold for families with little time to cook.

Bacon mania is truly booming.

I worry I’m getting it. That bacon ice cream sounds pretty good on a hot summer’s day. ■

Instructions:

1 chicken; shredded

1. Shred rotisserie chicken 2. Add the bbq sauce to the chicken until the desired wetness is reached.

3. Have all the ingredients in their respective bowls.

4. Layer remaining ingredients 5. Heat a skillet on medium to medium-high heat.

6. Add the shell, assembled or not, to the hot pan/skillet.

7. When the cheese looks melted, flip the quesadilla.

8. Allow the tortilla to brown and the cheese to melt.

9. Serve with more pico de gallo and sour cream.
