t’s a big year for Medicare beneficiaries: new cards, new regulations and maybe new plans?

Medicare’s future might be scary, but don’t let the idea of making changes to your plan spook you.

Even if you’re happy with your current Medicare coverage, it’s important to review it yearly, as things like cost, plans and in-network providers and pharmacies change. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to review; open enrollment starts October 15 and ends December 7. Do you have questions about Medicare? You’re not alone. Colorado Gerontological Society (CGS) has free seminars and resources available to help you navigate the confusing world of government health insurance. he eighth annual MontroseDelta BeaconFest was a day of good fun and practical information for the boomers and seniors in our community. Special thanks to our sponsor, Brookdale Sunrise Creek, and the entertainers, seminar speakers and 60+ local businesses who set up booths. Most importantly, thanks to you, our guests, the event was a tremendous success.

More than 1,000 people walked through the doors of the Montrose Pavilion, excited to immerse themselves in a day full of events and resources.

Pahgre’s, Rib City Grill and Starvin’ Arvin’s provided guests with delicious food throughout the day, and 970Insurance delighted early birds with coffee and donuts.

Morgan Crouse kicked off the entertainment, captivating the audience with her guitar and stunning vocals, and 9-year-old Clementine Rogers charmed them with her fiddle. Robin Freed and her harp students soothed our souls with their harmonious melodies in preparation for keyboardist Tim Veazey’s electrifying performance and guitar favorites from Ron Koss.

As if the seminars, live entertainment and vendor booths weren’t enough, guests were thrilled by the chance to win door prizes every 30 minutes. One lucky winner went home with an adventure package to Glenwood Springs, including a one night’s stay and admission to Iron Mountain Hot Springs, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, Vaudeville Revue and Yampah Spa, along with dinner at Glenwood Canyon Brew Pub. We also gave away a trip to Century Casino in Cripple Creek and Bross Hotel in Paonia, along with oil changes, hair cuts, bowling passes, restaurant gift cards and more. Budget Blinds gifted several decorative pillows and 1-Hour Eye Docs gave away some designer sunglasses that were a big hit! Volunteer of the Year: Honoring the

change-makers that better our community

Our readers and local organizations love telling us about individuals who contribute their time, skills and special talents to our community, going beyond the call of duty and performing outstanding acts of service.

In addition to recognizing these volunteers in stories and photos, we ask our readers to cast their votes for the BEACON Volunteer of the Year, an award that honors an individual who sets the standard for community service.

This was our first time hosting Volunteer of the Year specifically in Montrose and Delta counties.

For this inaugural year, our readers chose Mary Jo St. Jean—a friendly face to the people she lives and works with at Crossroads Senior Living and others who benefit from her energy and willingness to help out in the community.

Crossroads’ Activities Director Marcia Melvin nominated St. Jean for the award, saying, “Mary Jo is full of volunteer energy! [She] is invaluable to me at Crossroads.”

She added that St. Jean is up for any task, whether it’s office work, cleaning or helping set up for events. St. Jean is very active in Delta County, volunteering at Delta County Memorial Hospital, HopeWest, Heirlooms for Hospice, Delta Chamber of Commerce and the Delta County Museum “No one deserves this award more than Mary Jo,” Melvin wrote in her nomination.

“Where there is a volunteer

need, she is there to help out. She is on call to help out on short notice. Mary Jo always has a smile on her face to brighten those of the people she comes in contact with.

She has my highest recommendation for this Volunteer of the Year award!”

READY AND WILLING

Rory Ridley has been a volunteer driver for All Points Transit (APT) since the beginning of the year.

Though his schedule can be demanding between running a business and other projects, he sets aside time to help others.

Ridley’s giving spirit and reliability make him a tremendous asset to this nonprofit, which provides transportation services for seniors and people with disabilities throughout Montrose, Delta, San Miguel and Ouray counties.

“He often takes early morning shifts, taking folks to Delta, Grand Junction and Ridgway, as well as around town,” APT Mobility Manager TJ Burr wrote in his nomination.

“He is very eager to claim any shift that we cannot fit into our paid driver schedules.”

based nonprofit in Montrose four days a week. Executive Director Oneda Doyal said she spends her own dollars to create special gifts for clients and loves entertaining children while their parents sit patiently in the waiting room.

Burr said Ridley has logged in over 80 hours between March and August.

“She writes short stories and jokes and prints them off to distribute to clients,” Doyal wrote in her nomination.

“We can’t thank [Rory] enough for his dedication and commitment,” Burr said.

She also gives them books she makes herself containing easy-tocook recipes.

BLESSINGS BIG AND SMALL

Longmore’s selflessness isn’t just evident to clients. She goes out of her way to make everyone she works with feel special. Last Christmas, she made gift bags for all of Sharing Ministries’ 150 volunteers.

You don’t have to volunteer a boat load of hours each week to make a difference. Simple gestures can go a long way.

Sandy Longmore is a cherished volunteer at Sharing Ministries Food Bank who goes above and beyond in showing love and kindness to her fellow volunteers as well as families that walk in.

Variety Show to help subsidize senior lunches

Community members can see local talent first-hand at the Alive and Still Kicking Variety Show at the Montrose Senior Center on October 15. This fundraiser for the Senior Community Lunch Program kicks off with a barbecue and potluck dinner at 4 p.m., followed by a variety show with a lineup of family friendly entertainment at 5 p.m.

“The community doesn’t usually come down to the senior center,” said Huseby, who volunteers on the board of Golden Circle Seniors, a group that helps operate the senior center, “but if they did, they would experience this lively and fun group and see how involved they are.”

There will also be school group performances, singers from a woman’s choral group and barbershop quartet, and skits from Magic Circle Players.

While many older adults take part in the senior center’s classes and recreational activities, Huseby said the meal program is the focal point of the facility. She explained that seniors who attend classes or educational programs before lunch will often stay to eat, and others will come for lunch with friends

and enjoy crafts and games in the afternoon.

“It’s like ‘Cheers,’” Huseby said.

“Everybody knows your name and you are always welcomed.”

The senior lunch program was federally funded through Region 10 until 2013 when funding was pulled from the Older Americans Act. Golden Circle Seniors worked with Volunteers of America to continue the program, but lunch reservations now must be made in advance and the cost of meals has increased from $5 to $7.

Variety show organizers hope to subsidize the cost of meals by raising $8,000-$10,000, which would bring the cost down to $6 per meal.

Volunteers like Norma Swan have put their best foot forward to ensure the show’s success. Swan, 93, has already gathered more than $1,000 in sponsorships and items for the silent auction, including a one-year membership to Orvis Hot Springs in Ouray and two nights at the Chipeta Solar Springs Resort in Ridgway.

“Volunteers are the life-blood of the city,” Huseby said. “Montrose is growing into an older senior community, and we need more support from the community."

Golden Circle President Joy Portnier said she hopes that community members will enjoy the event and come support local seniors. Tickets are not needed, as donations will be accepted at the door.

Learn about changes at Medicare Monday

By Eileen Doherty, Colorado Gerontological Society eviewing your Medicare plan and drug coverage is every Medicare beneficiary’s responsibility. Medicare plans can make changes to cost, coverage and providers in their network every year, so make sure to review your plans during Medicare’s open enrollment period from October 15 through December 7. Medicare officials have reported the following changes:

DIABETES PREVENTION

More help is available for individuals who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and who are enrolled in Medicare Part B. If you meet the requirements, you may be eligible for two years of Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program classes, which use a Center for Disease Control curriculum to help Medicare beneficiaries better manage diabetes, a costly chronic condition both financially and health-wise.

MONITORING OPIOIDS

Opioid use will be closely monitored, and in some cases, refills may be denied. Low-income individuals who are identified as high users will have difficulty changing prescription drug plans and may have difficulty getting prescriptions filled if they use multiple pharmacies.

Medicare is advancing telehealth and telemedicine for rural areas, which allows medical professionals to ask questions, observe a patient and determine care using a television monitor with video and audio capabilities, rather than having to travel long distances and delay care.

When you call someone, do you even dial their phone number? Do you have friends or relatives who never answer their phone, but immediately answer a text? Do people ever ask you to contact them through Facebook?

How do you know the most appropriate method to get in touch with somebody so that you don’t waste their time or interrupt their day?

Understanding the etiquette of modern communication has very little to do with age or tech savvy.

While there are no absolutes, there are matters of courtesy that should be considered when using technology to communicate.

Many people are still afraid to call a friend on their cell phone. Most cell phone users are on unlimited talk plans, so calling a cell phone is not the intrusion it once was when it cost people money to talk on the phone. Even on plans with limited minutes, most people text so much that they have minutes to spare.

However, the telephone requires immediate interaction. If the person is busy, they may let it go to voicemail. Most people screen their calls and will put off responding to voicemail until they have time and a quiet venue to listen.

Contrary to common sense, the phone is often not the best method for an immediate reply.

Texting is typically the most efficient form of personal communication. It usually doesn’t require formal introductions or sign-offs.

If you need information from someone, just ask them via text.

The best part about texting is that you can send a text message at any time and the recipient will answer when they are available.

That’s not to say that the recipient should wait days or weeks to reply, but a few hours is typically acceptable.

Email is not the preferred communication method it once was.

Although it’s fast and free, very few people read their email every day—especially young people. It’s still an efficient form of business communication, and is excellent for occasional long-form communication or for sharing documents.

Facebook is another common venue, but its efficiency varies.

Almost everyone is on Facebook.

Although it’s not the hot trend it once was, many people still use it for communicating with acquaintances they may not otherwise interact with.

Common uses might be reaching out to a long-lost friend from school or contacting a business for information. Facebook is the least formal of all communication methods, but it’s also the least traditional.

Communication via technology is still a new frontier. These are essentially just common understandings. The etiquette will vary by demographic, professional use and familiarity between the sender and receiver. ■

Old bags and spring chickens Dear Old Bag: I’m entertaining the idea of having my mother come live with us. We have a big house, and right now, I’m going over to her house almost every day after work to see how she’s doing.

It would save me a trip over there and she would be with us in the evenings. Have you or your readers had experience with this? EM Dear EM: I have seen this work, but more often, it seems to not go well. You did not state your and your mother’s ages, so I am assuming that she is old and living at home alone. Moving is hard on us older people. I do not believe that having Mom live with you to save you a trip is enough reason to uproot her. Here are some questions you might consider: How is her health? Will you be able to care for her if her health begins to fail, or will she have to move again? Has Mom given any indication that she would like to live with you? Although I love them dearly, living with my kids would be the very last resort for me! Have you considered other members in your household? Even though you may get along well with your mother now, living together is different. It has been my observation that two women in a household is one too many. I suggest you cautiously discuss this with your mom and your family. Try to look ahead to Mom’s future needs and what will be best for her as she ages. I am impressed that you would consider having her live with you. Please let me know how it goes. OB Dear Old Bag: I have a friend who has also been my neighbor for years. When our husbands were alive, the four of us would go out together—I guess you could say we were drinking buddies. I have cut my alcohol consumption to no more than one drink per day, but my dear friend still drinks as if she were 25. I’ve suggested that she cut down, but she just laughs at me and says, “What else have I got?” I’m not sure if I should approach her again or just mind my own business. Signed, Worried Dear Worried: This is a touchy situation. Alcoholism among older people is a very real problem, not only for their health, but also their relationships. And I hope she is not driving like this! It could also lead to falls. As her friend, I think you owe it to her to have an honest and kind heart-to-heart talk with her. Encourage counseling and offer to go to an open AA meeting with her if need be. Try to get her interested in volunteer work, going to the gym, going to church, or joining clubs or singles groups for seniors so she has something to look forward to other than drinking. Good luck. I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I pointed out something and asked what color it was. She always told me the correct answer. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door and said sagely, “Grandma, I think you should figure out some of these for yourself!”

Montrose Center for the Arts (MCA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging all citizens, artists and art enthusiasts by showcasing and nurturing the arts.

She has resided in Montrose for the past 10 years, and came to live here for the same reasons as many others: “I came for a visit and wanted to be here,” she said.

Tracy Martinez, from Olathe, has lived in the area for nearly 50 years. An employment opportunity brought her family to Montrose when she was a teenager.

Martinez is the owner of Touch of Care (1100 E. Main St.), a local company that offers personal care, homemaking and in-home support to the elderly, blind and disabled. The company was started in 2001, but Martinez purchased a building in Montrose Downtown four years ago. She said she loves the central location because there’s a wide range of shopping and dining options for when she isn’t working.

“I like to shop and eat,” Martinez said. “And a couple of my favorite restaurants are downtown as well

Building a better food system by starting an indoor garden Something magical is happening in the world of food today. More and more, people are caring about where their food comes from. They attend farmers’ markets in search of locally grown produce, and some even grow their own food, too.

B

ut as the growing season comes to a close, we’re heading back to the grocery store, buying lettuce from California and winter squash from Mexico.

If one of our goals as gardeners is to become more empowered and self-sufficient by growing our own food, we’ve got to expand the boundaries of our gardens into conversations, schools and community spaces, and into the colder months of the year.

BASIC NECESSITIES

Your indoor garden will be unique to your situation. The amount of space and natural light you have to work with, how much time you spend away from home during winter, and what you like to eat are all contributing factors.

Consider your space. As you look around your house for a suitable growing space, your top priority is light. What space in your home gets the most natural light, and how can you get your indoor garden in that space? Tap into your creativity and resourcefulness. Vertical space is your friend.

Know what you’re growing. Just as it’s true in outdoor gardening, have a plan. Think about what you’d most love to eat fresh in winter, keeping in mind the goal of maximizing your harvest. Choose nutrient-dense varieties, and pair different vegetables together depending on their growing habits: tall plants with short ones, climbing plants with compact ones, plants that will grow out and over a pot with ones that won’t.

Succession planting—sowing

seeds every few weeks—gives you more produce to harvest more frequently. Keep successions in mind as you select your seeds. Here are some vegetables that are great in container gardening: • Leafy greens: lettuce, kale, arugula, spinach • Bok choy, mustard greens, cress, endive, Swiss chard • Green onions • Garlic greens • Leafy herbs: chives, cilantro, parsley • Woody herbs: rosemary, oregano, thyme • Pea shoots • Beet greens • Edible flowers: nasturtium, calendula • Climbing beans • Carrots • Radishes Find the right containers, and invest in good potting soil. For each plant you’re growing, choose a container deep enough to support its root system. Whatever container suits your space, make sure it has holes in the bottom for drainage and a saucer to catch water beneath it, and fill it with high-quality potting soil. Potting soil has materials in it like rocks, woodchips and perlite to help with drainage; you can purchase it or mix your own.

to water pots deeply, let them drain, then bring them indoors for seeding.

Sprinkle seeds evenly on top of the wet soil. Sow seeds thick; later, you can harvest sprouts and young leaves to thin out plants as they grow larger.

Cover with a thin layer of soil, and moisten with a mister bottle. Keep this top layer of soil moist, misting once or twice per day, until seeds sprout. Lay down a wet paper towel or cheesecloth if needed.

As sprouts become young leaves, you can enjoy a continual harvest by pulling the young plants out or cutting them at the base, leaving the roots in the soil as organic matter.

CARING FOR POTTED PLANTS With good drainage, you don’t have to worry much about overwatering

your potted plants. Always keep soil moist while trying to germinate seeds. As your plants become more established, water enough so that the soil is fully wet and the water fills the saucer beneath the pot.

If ever there’s water in the saucer from the day before, wait to water again, as plants will pull water up from the base of the pot when they need it.

Since potted plants can’t rely on larger ecosystems for nourishment, consider adding natural and organic fertilizers, compost or vermicompost (worm poop). Air circulation is another one of nature’s gifts you may need to actively provide for your plants, too. Turning on a fan or opening a window on a warmer day once in a while will keep your plants happy.

Indoor gardening is a challenge, but one that brings us even closer to cycles of nature and to food.

Whether you’re doing it with larger food systems in mind or just for your own enjoyment, savor the progress you’re bound to make as you figure out what style of container gardening works for you. ■

The princess in the pink mask

By Marti Healy he wore the golden crown with regal bearing, and it reflected brilliantly in the sun. Her gown brushed against her ankles in the slight breeze that also swept through her hair. Her right shoulder dipped in casual elegance, arm draped languidly at her side. Her left hand rested smartly on her hip, bracelets dangling.

S

In reality, she was small in stature, barely touching four feet in height, if that; but, also in reality, she was six months away from turning 9 years old. And, in reality, “reality” had nothing to do with her truth.

She was a princess that Halloween, complete with a gold cardboard cutout crown, pink gauzy-thin ball gown and a Mardi Gras-style mask that was a mismatched shade of pink and slightly too large for her face. Its elastic band kept sliding down the back of her head, taking the front down with it, causing brutal consequences with her ability to see through the eyeholes.

Nevertheless, she was royal, beautiful and achingly confident.

Of all the costumes and masks I’ve ever worn before or since that Halloween, this is one of the most memorable. This was my first store-bought costume, and the first

time I wore a mask. I thought the gown exquisite, the crown startlingly realistic, and the mask a disarming awakening to possibilities that had never existed before. Behind the mask, I could live within any dream I wanted. I could be anything I could imagine.

I have a black-and-white snapshot of this moment, where I can see the casual tilt of the head, the hand on hip and the utter confidence of being a princess behind a mask.

My current-day yoga instructor told me that the hand-on-hip stance has been proven to be one of the most confidence-centric messages delivered through body language, for the poser as well as the observers around her.

The only person I remember who wasn’t terribly impressed with my gold-crowned princess-ness was the “witch” standing behind me in the picture—my 11-year-old sister.

I suppose sisters are universal that way, and are meant to keep you humble. But it didn’t affect my self-image all that much. The mask protected me.

In the years since that day, I have learned about other kinds of masks.

Those that guard and intimidate, and cover up and change; the masks that deny pain as well as love, and transform ugliness as well as beauty; masks that hide desperation and loneliness and fear and doubt; masks that protect the child in all of us.

I suspect most people believe that to really know and love one another, we need to look beyond the masks and cherish the faces behind them. But sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is to pretend we don’t see a mask at all, and simply accept the person as they want to be seen, the illusion as presented, the princess in charge. After all, reality often has nothing to do with anybody’s truth. ■

According to Kentee Pasek, the festival’s creative director, this year’s event was the best ever in terms of attendance and variety of vendors.

“It’s successful because of the local talent and volunteers who participate,” she said. “The festival has grown into a collection of great artists and people making handcrafted, unique items. The festival is juried and we try to offer art pieces in a variety of mediums in a wide price range.”
