When Santa stops being real

I

’ve never thought of Christmas as a time to declutter (quite the opposite), but my mother and inlaws are all about it this year.

My mom came over to my house on Thanksgiving with a paper bag filled with items from my childhood: photos of me in handmade frames of paper and glitter, the outfit I wore when I came home from the hospital, and even little boxes containing my baby teeth. (Weird, I know.)

She told me how she enjoyed sorting through tubs of photos and school projects that had been in storage for more than a decade. Looking over my mom’s shoulder through most of it, my kid sister Siarra was also intrigued.

With more than 11 years between her and my other younger sister, she practically had a glimpse into another era.

Of course, like many Generation Zers, she wondered why my mom had so many photos of her three older sisters and not many of her.

Then she saw the filled-out baby books and the teeth—where were hers? She stormed off but didn’t get very far before pausing. Then she spun around and asked, “Does this mean the Tooth Fairy isn’t real?”

No doubt this revelation also affirmed any uncertainty she had about the existence of Santa Claus.

Research suggests that most kids stop believing in Santa once they’re better able to acknowledge the unlikeliness of one man traveling around the world overnight­—usually around 8 years old. My sister is 12, so she should already know about Santa then, right? Oh, I’m confident she suspects it, but has never really asked.

Get into the spirit of giving

Something nice starts to happen this time of year. Happy feelings escalate as vacant lots start displaying Christmas trees and Santa’s knee becomes every youngster’s desired destination. Trips to the mall are frequent, hearts beat faster than usual, and our love for mankind intensifies.

S

omewhere in the midst of these joyful feelings and fun activities are disquieting facts and disturbing images that cast dark shadows over our hearts. They appear as stories in front pages of newspapers—stories that describe the plight of the homeless and include appeals for charitable holiday donations. They surface in photographs portraying despair in the eyes of children who look older than their years, with vacant expressions in their eyes and no hope in their hearts; children who know better than to dream of American Girl Dolls and electronic video games, and pray only for warm coats and shoes with soles.

We read these stories and are deeply moved, so we write checks and pull children’s name tags from huge mall Christmas trees and buy them gifts. Doing these charitable deeds during the holiday season mollifies our desire to bring a degree of happiness into the lives of those less blessed than we are. We walk away

feeling righteous, believing that we have fulfilled our duty as spiritual, religious, caring human beings.

There is a tradition in Judaism called tzedakah, a Hebrew word that very loosely translated means charity.

But, while charity involves decision, tzedakah does not—it is an obligation to do what is right and just.

Charity is something we decide to give to the unfortunate to offset their adversities. Tzedakah goes beyond giving something to tide people over; it attempts to get people to once again stand with dignity.

Even the indigent, who are sustained by charity, are compelled to give tzedakah, so that the act of receiving does not leave them without dignity.

DO FOR OTHERS

I grew up in a spiritual Jewish family where doing for others was not simply a once-a-year holiday occurrence. There wasn’t a day when my father didn’t remind us to share our good fortune with others. He

made it clear that doing for others was not a choice we were free to contemplate. It was something we were required to do as naturally as we were expected to draw our next breath.

I smile today because I now recognize that we were not even remotely wealthy. My father was a farmer—a “gentleman farmer” as he humbly referred to himself—who worked hard and died at the age of 46, never to see the fruits of his labor.

There were many weeks when we went without meat, fish or chicken because we couldn’t afford it.

Instead, we lived on whatever the land produced, Kraft macaroni and cheese, and Campbell’s vegetarian and vegetable soup. But my father said we were fortunate, and that’s what my brother and I believed.

Growing up, it was not unusual to find a tattered vagrant sitting at our breakfast table. My father, who regularly preached to us about the dangers of hitchhiking, would pick up strangers on the road—people who

looked down and out—bring them home, and give them a cot to sleep on in our basement. In the morning, mother would prepare them a large, hot breakfast and a bagged lunch.

Then my father would slip a $5 bill into their hand, which was a great deal of money for us back in the early ’50s, and drive them to some reasonable destination.

When my brother grew up and moved to Manhattan, he regularly filled large shopping bags with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apples, oranges and bananas, and walked the streets handing out food to the homeless.

As a teenager, I traveled by bus to a neighboring town where I worked summers in an orphanage without pay.

GIVING IN PRACTICE

In our family, doing for others was not viewed as something special; it was a part of everyday living. In today’s complex, dot com world of two-paycheck families, high-interest credit card payments, endless carpooling, interminable supermarket lines, and time-consuming, high-

tech communication devices, we barely have time to do for ourselves, much less think about doing for others.

But there is a simple way to teach our children that we are not solely self-involved. In many Jewish homes, you will find a tzedakah box, which is a kind of piggy bank.

Although decorative tzedakah boxes are popular, any container can be designated to collect tzedakah.

I know someone whose grandmother’s tzedakah box was actually a teapot.

All end-of-the-day loose change from family members’ purses and pockets is placed in this bank. When the bank is full, the contents are donated to a synagogue, a church, or a trusted charity for families or individuals in need of assistance.

It’s so easy to do, and an invaluable example to set for our children.

Maintaining this spirit of giving throughout the entire year not only has the power to enrich the lives of impoverished recipients, it enhances and intensifies the quality of each contributor’s life as well. ■

“I give lots of time as a bell ringer for Salvation Army and money to a variety of causes. My wife, Linda, and I help people by buying out layaways at the department stores. We’ve done this for many years. We pay down the balance to $1. We do it to help the kids.”

I give all year long. I also donated to Heifer International to help people in other countries.”

Larry Hudnall “I give random acts of kindness and tell people to pass it on. I learned this from a man in Martindale, Minnesota. He helped me on a cold winter day and when I tried to thank him, he told me to pass it on.”

Kate Gates “I listen to my heart and do what it says. I make gifts for people. I save money all year long for Christmas so I can buy things for people I love.

I also put money in the Salvation Army buckets and give extra to people standing on the street and wish them a merry Christmas.”

Waking the sleeping giant:

Pearl Harbor and World War II in America

By Don Johnson f, in a few years, someone were to ask me, “What was the United States like in 2018?” My answer would be far different than one from, say, a Baby Boomer.

I

It is much the same as when I’m asked, “What was this country like during World War II?” I can only answer from my perspective, but I would give it my best shot to present a consensus of what most of my countrymen would agree was the country’s mood in this desperate struggle for survival.

It’s amusing for someone my age to hear some whippersnapper opine that it would be impossible for the U.S. to successfully fight two wars at the same time.

Well, after being caught flat footed and much of our naval power destroyed before we even knew we were at war, we fought, beat and destroyed three major adversaries in Japan, Germany and Italy.

STANDING STRONG TOGETHER

My first realization of our being in a state of war came at a very early age. I was a young teenager when my parents returned from a trip to town and pulled in the driveway

to be greeted by an even younger boy, the son of the grammar school principal who lived a couple of houses down from ours.

He was jumping up and down with excitement.

The humiliation of America was nearly complete. One who did not live through that period couldn’t possibly imagine the mindset of most of the American public back then. To say we were angry is a gross understatement. We were furious, with a strong bloodlust to strike back at the arrogant armies of what we considered to be a backward society.

“The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor!” he said.

So what? I thought. The Japs were always bombing something.

My answer was quickly forthcoming when I found out Pearl Harbor belonged to us.

That made a difference indeed.

They’d gone too far, and our armed forces would quickly set things right and deal out a proper comeuppance to the little yellow bellies.

(We had not yet learned the concept of political correctness.)

We had also not learned to view the world situation realistically. The truth of it was that we were woefully unprepared for a war for which the Japanese had prepared many years, a situation we could very well allow to repeat itself today.

I remember thinking that the war could not possibly last long enough for me to take a meaningful part.

We watched in horror as the Japanese war machine rolled over our

Thousands of young men stormed the recruiting offices, lying about their ages, hiding infirmities and using every subterfuge they thought they might need to get into combat. Almost no one tried to dodge the draft back then.

wherever we thought we could strike a blow for our country. We endured without complaint (at least not much) the rationing of gasoline, rubber, sugar, meat and other commodities.

From our vantage point of today, the results were easily predictable. The sleeping giant came fully awake. We were hopelessly, perhaps foolishly, patriotic.

For those of us who were actually able to make it into uniform, nothing was too good. Hitchhikers in uniform seldom stood by the road for more than a few minutes before being picked up and whisked on their way to wherever they wished to go. In trains, buses and streetcars, members of the armed forces were seated before the general public. Restaurants suddenly found that extra table when requested by a service member.

Working women flooded defense plants determined to do their part in bringing the Asiatic monster to its knees. Rosie the Riveter was as eager to do her part as any GI Joe.

In short, there were many hard times to endure during the war years, but we enjoyed something Americans haven’t at any other time in living memory. We lived in a country absolutely unified in a joint effort to achieve a worthy and difficult conclusion.

Those of us still champing at the bit of what we considered unreasonable age restrictions volunteered as scrap metal collectors, air defense workers, critical industry workers,

No task was said to be too difficult.

No job too dangerous. No goal that could not be attained. No whining about fairness. After all, it was for the war effort. ■

Santa made me do it!

I remember when Santa encouraged my daughters to break our house rule, which forbids them from eating what we call “junk food cereal”—those high-sugar cereals with little nutrition. Actually, the rule forbids me from bringing the stuff into the house.

Well, Santa, who is known for his love of sweet cookies, delivered boxes of sugary cereals to my 3- and 5-year-old daughters one Christmas Eve. My daughters gasped in surprise when they opened the gifts, revealing boxes of the forbidden cereal. The Cocoa Puffs and Chocolate Chip Cookie Crisp cereals made a hit with my daughters—much more than the Care Bear sleeping bags, the Cabbage Patch Kids and the Candy Land game Santa also left.

So who was being naughty this time?

There they were—the forbidden cereals from Santa, which became the center of attention. Clutching the cereal box tightly, my eldest daughter Emily insisted she could eat the cereal because Santa gave it to her.

What could we say to that? My husband and I decided we wouldn’t take the cereal away from our daughters.

The girls squealed in delight and the unsupervised cereal munching began.

While holding the opened boxes of cereal, the girls told their grandpa about the surprise gift Santa brought them. Between their munching, they talked excitedly about the sugary cereal. I quickly reminded them that today was special and tomorrow we’d be back to eating our traditional breakfast: oatmeal and fruit or scrambled eggs.

I wasn’t surprised when they barely ate our traditional Christmas breakfast: ham and cheese omelets and homemade blueberry muffins. Santa gave them a free junk food pass, and they took full advantage of it.

Years later, I remembered how much fun it was when my daugh-

ters received the surprise boxes of cereal from Santa. I decided it was time for my grown-up daughters to receive another surprise. I would anonymously send them a weekly gift during December through the U.S. mail.

The first week, the postman delivered a hand-blown, glass heart to them. The box included an anonymous note, which said, “The world is a better place because of you.”

The second week, they received a holiday candle with a candlescaping kit, which included small, ceramic holiday pieces—a Christmas tree, bell, gingerbread boy and heart as well as tiny pieces of glittery wax. The anonymous note that was enclosed said, “Believe in the magic of your dreams. You’re an amazing person.”

The third week was the grand finale, and just a few days before Christmas.

I imitated Santa’s surprise, which took place over 20 years ago. The postman delivered a gift-wrapped box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs cereal to my adult daughters, including a signed note from Santa, which read, “Everyone needs a little sugar in her life. Ho! Ho! Ho!” The sugary cereal was a hit yet again.

It brought back happy childhood memories and created new ones.

While we were distracted with the merriment and our memories, my 4-year-old granddaughter, Olivia, gained control of the cereal box. Her arm was up to her elbow in the box of peanut butter puffs as she happily munched on the sugary treat.

Bluetooth headphones - Phones, computers and tablets all offer support for Bluetooth peripherals. If you enjoy music, podcasts, movies, video games, or any other multimedia content, a set of Bluetooth headphones can be extremely handy.

iPad - There are dozens of inexpensive tablet computers and ebooks on the market, but the iPad is by far the most versatile.

The iPad Mini or standard iPad will do 95 percent of the jobs that are most fitting for a tablet.

Smartwatch - There are two great choices when it comes to smartwatches. The Fitbit (Ionic or Versa models) and the Apple Watch. The Fitbit is an underrated fitness watch with support for a variety of apps, and a sub-$250 price. The Apple Watch is a James-Bond-like assortment of features and apps but the price is over $400 for most models.

I love my Fitbit because the battery lasts almost a week while the Apple Watch needs to be recharged every night. Both watches feature heart rate monitoring, GPS, relaxation apps, and allow you to screen calls and control your music from the watch’s touchscreen.

4K TV - Bells, whistles and brands vary, but almost any 4K TV is probably better than the one you have, even if it’s only a couple years old. This holiday season, you’ll probably find a number 515 S. Bluetooth headphones are wireless with a range of around 30 feet. That means you can listen to audio in headphones even if the device with the content is located in a different room. I’ll also argue that they are safer than corded headphones, with no cord to get tangled up in the chainsaw. If I want to skip a track or pause the music, I can use the controls that are on the headphones themselves or on my Fitbit.

A car phone mount - You should never text and drive, but using your phone as a GPS or playing music through your car stereo can be very handy.

I recently purchased a phone mount that allows me to place my phone in my windshield so that I don’t have to take my eyes off the road to look at the GPS, screen calls or skip songs on Pandora. If you have one of the new wireless charging phones, you can buy a mount that also charges your phone for under $50.

Hopefully, one or more of these items will be the perfect gift for a friend or loved one on your shopping list. ■

Food for thought: Upcoming conferences unite growers, shed light on current issues

ext month, farmers and gardeners alike learn and connect at the 75th annual Western Colorado Horticultural Society (WCHS) Conference & Trade Show in Grand Junction, and the seventh annual Western Colorado Food & Farm Forum in Montrose.

Bringing people together around a shared love of growing food is what these upcoming conferences are about. Both host speaker presentations that cover topics ranging from soil health and water laws to research and finding solutions to issues affecting fruit growers today.

FARM TOURS AND COLORADO WINE

WCHS has been uniting Western Slope growers for more than 100 years. The annual conference and trade show, held January 15-17 at Two Rivers Convention Center, unites fruit growers and agricultural enthusiasts for two days of informational seminars following a day of bus tour to Grand Valley farms.

WCHS conference attendees are also invited to participate in the Colorado Association for Viticulture & Enology’s (CAVE) VinCO conference, held in conjunction with the WCHS, to learn more about Colorado’s emerging wine industry.

WCHS Vice President Dan Kroll said

the occasion is not just for largescale growers.

“Though the WCHS/VinCO Conference is geared toward the commercial grower, the topics discussed throughout are certainly applicable to home gardeners,” Kroll said. “We bring in speakers that are relevant to our fruit growing community, who will be covering the latest in soil health, plant nutrition, integrated pest management and drought contingency planning.”

The trade show also provides a platform for growers to discover the latest in fruit growing technology.

Mark Harris, general manager of the Grand Valley Water Users Association, will give the keynote address about planning for the future in a time when drought and uncertainty are upon us.

Ben Hartman, author of “The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables,” will present a half-day workshop on Friday that demonstrates the application of lean concepts to crop production and will speak on Saturday about how farmers can maximize value and profits with less work.

“We really strive for a very diverse program,” said Parker. “Our conference is really focused on crops, livestock, marketing, management and specialty crop areas. We try to attract a diverse audience from home gardeners to small and mid-

In addition to speaker presentations, the forum promotes networking and interaction among attendees and speakers, hosting topic-focused round tables that give conference attendees an opportunity to chat about specific issues.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is create space for dialogue,” Parker said.

The forum’s Invention Convention encourages farmers and gardeners to bring their most innovative creations to the conference for a chance to win a cash prize.

Both conferences offer home gardeners a chance to explore the many connections between gardening, farming and agricultural policy and to connect with other people who are passionate about growing food.

By Karen Telleen-Lawton enerosity is a cherished value for most Americans, especially for the older population. Many researchers say there is a positive association between helping others and living longer.

1. Concentrate on causes with which you are informed. If you are not personally involved, check their website to determine if their mission statement and financials correspond with your interests and priorities.

This is especially good news in December, when 31 percent of annual giving occurs.

2. Determine an amount that is generous but still fits within your budget. Remember the flight attendant’s instruction: “Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.”

Charitable giving not only supports worthwhile organizations, but it increases your own satisfaction and happiness, and tax savings.

Tax-wise, it’s more important than ever to plan the timing of your gifts.

Since the standard deduction is now $24,000 for a married couple ($12,000 for single), you may want to “lump” your giving. You can prepay your planned 2019 gifts before the end of 2018, bundling your donations and itemizing on your 2018 taxes. Then in 2019, you can keep donations to a minimum and take the standard deduction.

High net worth individuals benefit more from tax-deductible donations because they are paying income taxes at higher marginal rates. They have more options.

Donor advised funds (DAFs) have become increasingly popular for the wealthy over the past decade.

They are relatively easy to set up and operate, and have tax advantages. In a DAF, donors can set up an account, take a current charitable deduction, and decide later what organizations will receive the funds.

Here are some tips to be aware of before you send off a check.

Whether your gifts land you a name on a building or a simple thank you card, focus on your goals and passions rather than the tax advantages, and your generosity will drive your longevity.

• Only donations to IRS listed 501c(3) organizations are deductible; never gifts to individuals.

• If you received value for your donation (such as a meal or a gift), that must be deducted from your donation.

• You can donate some or all of the required minimum withdrawal from your retirement account without paying income tax (up to $100,000).

• If you volunteer, your volunteer time is not deductible, but expenses related to your volunteering are. ■

More than 200,000 Americans are living with pulmonary fibrosis (PF), a progressive and debilitating lung disease that leads to scarring of the lungs. To combat this, the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) has launched a new educational website at www.AboutPF.org meant to educate individuals about this deadly disease and provide a downloadable Pulmonary Fibrosis Risk List worksheet to facilitate the conversation about symptoms and risk factors with a general physician.

Skin Cancer Foundation encourages protecting skin year-round UVB rays, the main cause of sun-

burns, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow and ice. Snow reflects 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, further increasing risk of skin cancer and premature aging.

The Skin Care Foundation urges you to cover up, wear UV-blocking glasses and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily to all exposed skin.
