You’re Only Old Once!

D

id you know that Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated a book in his 80s? The fact that he released it on his 82nd birthday doesn’t surprise me—after all, I read about mature adults who do remarkable things every single month! What does surprise me, however, is that I never knew this book existed until I stumbled upon it at Barnes & Noble recently.

Published in 1986, “You’re Only Old Once! A Book for Obsolete Children” was Seuss’ first adult book since the commercial failure of another one in 1939. Having said before that he didn’t like writing for adults, Seuss (whose full name was Theodor Seuss Geisel) justified it by saying that adults were just obsolete children.

Well, that’s a grim title, I thought.

I sure don’t want to ever feel obsolete.

It also didn’t put me at ease when I learned the book was written shortly after Seuss had spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital.

But in classic Seuss-style, he relays his frustrations about old age and being “improperly pilled and improperly billed” with humor and wit in this delightful new defense against aging.

“You’re in pretty good shape for

the shape that you’re in,” he reminds us.

Wise advice and an entertaining read. I recommend it.

A dream job done!

By Carole Ann McKelvey he Montrose Community Recreation Center is a marvel to behold—a glittering gem on the Western Slope and a model for neighboring city officials to consider when building their own municipal hub.

T

It was a community-wide effort that brought this 82,000-squarefoot facility to life, having opened its doors in January 2017. It took time, but Cosme “Coz” Sisneros has seen it through since the beginning.

His job as recreation and operations manager for the Montrose Recreation District (MRD) put him at the heart of it all.

“You can see Coz’s fingerprints all over this place,” said Ken Sherbenou, MRD executive director. “During the building, he was right here,

Sisneros’ influence is on almost every inch of the state-of-the-art facility. In the 43 years he’s been with the MRD, he’s seen the organization make great strides to better serve the community, expanding and developing programs and enhancing its current facilities to accommodate Montrose’s growing population and interest in recreation.

“All the attention I have received and the honors that have been bestowed upon me means a great deal to me and my family,” Sisneros said humbly. “Seeing my name on the gym floor and having an award presented to me in my honor is truly amazing.”

recreation center of his alma mater, the University of Colorado Boulder, before moving home to Olathe and taking a job with the MRD. “I was very fortunate to have found my purpose and meaning in life early on in my career,” he said. “It was my dream job and still is after all these years.”

Sisneros said his life’s goal has always been to serve and help people, which he feels he was able to do with the MRD from day one.

The community first met and fell in love with Sisneros when he directed early grassroots programs like the Old Timers Association baseball and Pigtail Softball programs.

These stories of transformation and growth are all part of Sisneros’ legacy, which will be remembered even after he retires from the MRD on December 31.

“When I first walked through the doors in the summer of 1975 to begin my career with the recreation district, never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed what was in store for parks and recreation in Montrose,” he said.

trose, or the fact that he’s been there every step of the way.

“The years have gone by so quickly,” he said. “When I reflect back on my career with the MRD, I truly have a lot to be grateful for. Looking back, I could not have predicted where or what would become of our small recreation department.”

For him, picking up the 48-page activity guide the MRD publishes three times a year is one of the best ways to see the vastness of what the recreation district has implemented and what it continues to provide the community.

“This was a team effort,” he said.

“None of this happens because of one person. The MRD is fortunate to have a very capable and dedicated staff of parks and recreational professionals and equally exceptional leadership to continue to build on the progress we have made.”

BIG FISH IN THE COMMUNITY POND

Remarkable as it is, the recreation center isn’t Sisneros’ final claim to fame with the MRD. Construction is scheduled to start in just a few months to create a

new trail along the river, connecting the recreation center to the Mayfly Outdoors headquarters on the north end of town. The project will add 2.25 miles of recreation trail and include underpass crossings of Main Street and Townsend Avenue.

Sisneros is proud to have been part of the team that pulled this effort together. He said a $2 million Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant recently awarded to MRD and the City was the caveat in making this project a possibility. Western Colorado Conservation Corps was also a key community partner in bringing the grant to Montrose.

Outdoor recreation is important to Sisneros even though he doesn’t consider himself to be an avid outdoorsman. He is, however, an expert fly fisherman, having fished just about every river and stream in Colorado, sometimes bringing his son Nick along for the experience.

In addition to spending more time with his family—his wife Vivian, son Nick, daughter Jennifer and five grandchildren—Sisneros plans on doing more fishing in retirement.

He already has plans to take his new graphite Tom Morgan fly fishing rod, a retirement gift from his fami-

ly, into Montana’s Blackfoot River.

NOT QUITE GOODBYE

Sisneros is hesitant to say farewell to his friends and coworkers at the recreation center because it certainly won’t be the last they see of him. He assured them that he will drop in from time to time to see how things are going.

“I plan to still be part of this great community and enjoy the quality of life it has to offer,” he said.

He’s excited to delve deeper into the opportunities he’s worked so hard to create.

“I was extremely blessed to have been given an opportunity to work for and be part of this incredible organization,” he said. “The MRD has always been and will continue to be such an important part of this community and my life.” ■ In addition to spending more time with his family, Sisneros plans on doing more fishing in retirement. One thing, 24 hours: A resolution you can stick to

By Jan Weeks • Join a gym • Lose 10 pounds • Quit smoking • Ease up on the drinking • Stop yelling at the kids/spouse/ traffic and so on…

Another year, another list. If these look like your 2019 resolutions, you’re in good company. New Year’s Day is the time we vow to be better, healthier, stronger, thinner— whatever this year. Our lists seem to go on forever, as if the more resolutions we make, the better chance we have of actually sticking to them. Yet by February 1, we’ve caved to chocolate, written off that new gym membership, loosened our belts and dropped into despair of ever accomplishing our goals.

So how did this tradition of mental self-flagellation get started? Four thousand years ago the Babylonians made promises to their gods in mid March as they planted crops. Promises that included repaying their debts and returning things they had borrowed. If they succeeded, they gained the gods’ favor. If not—well, gods can be so nasty.

The Romans got into the act when Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar and decreed January 1 to be the new year, 46 years before Christ. They offered sacrifices and promises of good conduct to Janus, the two-faced god who looked back to the previous year and forward into the future.

Early Christians got in the act, too.

English clergyman John Wesley, who founded Methodism, created the Covenant Renewal Service, which was held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, using prayers and hymns to become better Christians.

Now the practice of making resolu-

tions is mostly secular, with people making promises to themselves and focusing on self-improvement, with fewer than 10 percent succeeding at keeping even one, let alone dozens.

Talk about setting yourself up for a guilt trip! Instead of making an endless list of things that are guaranteed to disappoint, how about this?

Each day ask yourself, “What is one thing I can do right now to make my life better?” For instance, if one of your resolutions was to corral clutter, your one thing might be “Just for today I will put the clean laundry away.” Maybe you vow to exercise more. “Just for today I will walk to the library instead of driving.” You want to be kinder? “Just for today I will not flip off that idiot who pulled out in front of me,” (as Wayne Dyer said, traffic doesn’t care).

The beauty of these one things is that you don’t have to commit to forever, or even the next month.

Everyone can do one thing. This approach can also take you deeper into what you really want. Sure, mundane tasks have a place on the list, but if you take a few minutes to focus on the things that will make life better, you’ll gain clarity.

One Things don’t have to be all duty and have-tos. Maybe reading a book for an hour would create a sense of peace or wonder or relaxation today. You may find that learning a new skill or contacting an old friend or examining your spiritual practices makes your life better.

Maybe there’s a habit or two that doesn’t serve you anymore and just for today you won’t bite your nails, pull out the credit card for a $3 purchase, or click on the Solitaire icon while you’re waiting for your favorite website to load.

ach new year is accompanied by the fantasy of getting your life in order. Declutter, organize, set goals, become a better human.

Unfortunately, over the past 20 years or so, a lot of that clutter and disorganization is unseen to the human eye because it resides in cyberspace or on a computer hard drive. I could write a book on keeping your computer running well, but for this column, I will to focus on the topic of security.

Unless your computer is more than 10 years old or it was a bargain basement model, your computer is probably not too full. If it’s slow and unstable, the problem is most likely related to a security problem.

Computer security includes everything from passwords and firewalls to prevent hackers to viruses and web browsing habits. It’s a vast topic, but here are some things you need to know: 1. Modern digital bad guys rarely infest your computer with viruses. In fact, we don’t even talk much about viruses anymore.

Instead, we talk about malware.

Malware is any program designed to do something you don’t want it to do.

Malware may be a virus, but it’s more likely a program designed to bombard you with advertising, hijack your web browsing, or cause problems as a means of extorting money.

2. Your expensive antivirus

probably isn’t doing much good. Most malware is actually installed with your permission.

Have you ever seen a window pop-up that says something like, “Internet Explorer would like to install…in order to view this website?” If you click YES, you have given that program, possibly malware, permission to install itself on your computer.

If you give a program permission to install, your antivirus will ignore it.

3. Too much security causes many of the same problems as too little security. If you install an expensive security suite, your computer will likely slow way down.

Computer retailers love to install multiple bulky security programs for two reasons: First, it drastically decreases their liability if your computer gets infected with something. Second, they usually get a commission for installing the security software onto every machine they build.

4. Use lots of passwords and a password manager. I like the program and browser plug-in called LastPass. These password managers save and encrypt all of your passwords for you.

Once you have added the usernames and passwords into your password manager, you don’t even need to remember it anymore. Whenever you visit a website that requires a password, the password manager will fill it

out for you.

5. Learn about encryption and stop worrying about online security. This advice is not for big banks or commerce websites.

I am talking to you, BEACON reader.

Recently, Marriott announced that as many as 500 million former customer credit card numbers were potentially vulnerable to hackers. Target had a similar problem two years ago. Hopefully, you’ve also noticed that there haven’t been any stories about 500 million cases of credit card fraud as a result. That’s because credit card numbers by themselves are useless.

Even credit card numbers with an accompanying name and address are useless without the security code on the back. In order to use a credit card, you either need the tangible card or you need all of the information that appears on the card as well as the owner’s address. Each of those pieces of information is connected through unbreakable encryption.

In reality, being listed in the phone book or handing your credit card to a waiter is a greater security risk than using your credit card on the Internet.

Don’t spend the new year paranoid about malware or hackers.

You have driven an automobile and eaten fast food your entire life. Using your computer to shop or surf the web is far less dangerous. ■

Two should tango when it comes to couples’ finances Dear Old Bag: The letter from “Miserable” mentioned that her husband handles the finances and keeps them close to himself.

My stepfather did the same and my mother assumed all was okay financially until he died after a long illness and found a note he’d left her saying she should file for bankruptcy. When all the bills came in, she discovered she was facing $80,000 in credit card debt. With help from a compassionate banker, she made it through. Spouses should be fully aware of what is going on financially, especially if his or her name is on the accounts. If his/her name isn’t on the accounts, she should probably see an attorney. OB Dear Old Bag: I read in one of your columns a while back that one of your biggest fears is that your children will start treating you as if they are the parent and you are the child. That’s what’s happening to me. I had a recent surgery with complications, and since then, my kids have been telling me I need to think about assisted living. I have completely recovered and am back to all my old routines. My mind is good, I’m a good driver and have an active social life. I don’t know what happened during my down time, but it’s as if they think they should take over my decision-making and my business. I don’t want to offend them but how can I get them to lay off? Signed, Still OK Dear OK: I don’t know what changed in your children. Maybe they thought their active mother was invincible and all of a sudden they had to face the fact that she would not be around forever. Or maybe they felt like they had not paid enough attention to you and are trying to make up for it. Having kids who care is a wonderful thing. I think you should thank them profusely for being there for you and let them know you will call on them when you need something. Let them know that their time spent with you is the most valuable thing they give you. You should see the letters I receive from those who have children who do not appear to care! Good luck. OB Dear Old Bag: I’ve had a few dates with a nice gentleman (I thought). The other night he took me to a fine restaurant, where we had a wonderful dinner with wine. After dinner he said, “Did you enjoy dinner?” I told him it was wonderful. Then he said, “Now you need to come to my house and we will have dessert.” I could tell by his voice that he wasn’t talking about ice cream. I told him I’d have to pass. He got very sarcastic and said, “That is the last $100 meal you will get from me.” I was shocked. Is this how dating is these days?

It sounds like if you are going to dance, you have to pay the fiddler!

St. Peter thought for a few seconds and said, “Okay, I’ll accept that answer.”

Then he asked a question he thought would be more difficult: “How many seconds in a year?”

St. Peter is so surprised, but doesn’t stop there.

“What is God’s first name?” he asked.

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day,

two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.

“One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me” said one boy.

Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.”

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.

“Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won’t believe what I heard!

Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls.”

The man said, “Beat it kid. Can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk?”

When the boy insisted, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery.

Spruce up winter eating with sprouts

F

resh food becomes a bit harder to find during the winter months. Local greenhouses and cold-hardy vegetables help ease our winter cravings for fresh produce, but they can’t do it alone.

Seeking out small farmers who are growing produce through the winter is worth the effort since fresh vegetables offer so much more nutritional value and flavor than weeks-old produce. But there’s one more solution we can turn to yearround: sprouts.

Growing sprouts is easy, affordable and can be done in nearly any household. Sprouts are seeds that have just put out their first legs of growth—baby plants. They’re packed with nutrients and enzymes and add freshness to wintertime eating.

Sprouts also have a robust flavor for their size and age. Radish sprouts have a spicy kick like radishes do, while wheat sprouts have a sweet, malty taste. Step 1: Soak seeds overnight Add about three tablespoons of sprouting seeds to your quart jar.

Cover the opening of the jar with the mesh screen and secure it in

place with a canning ring.

Pour non-chlorinated water through the screen to wet the seeds. Swirl the seeds around in the water, drain and add water again. Place the jar on your counter and let the sprouting seeds soak overnight.

Step 2: Drain and rinse In the morning, keeping the meshed lid on the jar, pour out the water. Rinse, swirl and drain—repeat this process two or three times. After the jar is fully drained, lay it upside down in a shallow bowl and let the jar sit this way.

Do this a few times throughout the day. This keeps the seeds moist enough to start sprouting and clean enough so that you’ll want to eat them once they’re fully sprouted. Each day, the sprouts will grow and your jar will begin to fill with young, green sprouts.

Step 3: Transfer and enjoy After three to five days, depending on how big and green you want your sprouts to be, you can move them from the jar to the refrigerator. Be sure they’re fully drained before moving them. I like to fold them up in a cloth napkin and store them in the produce drawer. This way, the sprouts can breathe and stay fresh longer without turning slimy and brown.

Finance quiz: How much do you know for the new year?

By Karen Telleen-Lawton he new year is cascading towards us without regard to whether we’ve even had time to make resolutions. We have to get used to writing new digits for the year on our checks. January 1 is also when new laws and regulations come into effect and when new numbers may apply to everything from Medicare to tax rates.

In preparation for the new year, I figured it was a good time for a financial quiz to test your knowledge of what’s to come. The answers are at the end, but don’t peek!

1. What is the Social Security income increase for 2019? a. 0%, same as last year. b. 2.3%, the approximate average since inception (boring!). c. 2.8%, the largest in seven years. d. 3.2%, the average inflation rate since inception.

2. What tax is owed on Social Security benefits? a. Social Security income is never taxable. b. Most Social Security benefits are taxable if you and your spouse (MFJ: Married Filing Jointly) earn over about $45,000. c. About half your benefits are taxable, but only if MFJ income is over $200,000. d. None of your benefits are tax able if you are over 80.

3. What is the standard deduction for an individual starting in 2018? a. About $6,000, same as last year. (Too easy!) b. About $10,000; the highest it’s ever been. c. About $20,000; no deduction if income exceeds $350,000. d. About $12,000; double last year.

4. What is the tax rate on longterm capital gain and qualified dividends?

New treatments offer relief at Millennium Wellness in Cedaredge

Western medicine is great, but it might be worth your time to try something from the other end of the globe.

Millennium Wellness in Cedaredge offers a range of alternative healing practices, including acupuncture, massage therapy, herbalism, homeopathy and essential oils.

“We are seeing really good results in our practice and seeing people get relief,” said Christin Hawbaker, a certified massage therapist who owns the practice with her husband, Timothy, a family nurse practitioner.

Both Hawbakers are licensed acupuncturists and have master’s degrees in traditional Chinese medicine from Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, California. This style of medicine uses acupuncture and holistic herbology to treat the whole person, with roots dating back to ancient times and evolving over thousands of years.

Her training in acute and chronic pain management, pediatrics and women’s health issues, general stress disorders, soft tissue injuries and internal medicine compliments her knowledge for treating the whole person. Both she and her husband are also certified ozone and prolozone therapists—two new treatments they recently introduced to the practice.

Delta-Montrose Electrical Association files with PUC seeking just and reasonable exit charge from Tri-State Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA), a member-owned and locally controlled rural electric cooperative in Montrose, strongly reaffirmed its intent to exit membership in Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association (TriState), and has asked the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to exercise its statutory authority over Tri-State as a public utility and adjudicate a just, reasonable and nondiscriminatory exit charge. The announcement culminates over a decade of negotiations between DMEA and Tri-State to stabilize rates and lift restrictions on DMEA’s pursuit of more local renewable energy generation. Tri-State restricts rural cooperatives to a 5 percent limit for the amount of energy that they can produce on their own, which DMEA met two years ago.

Since then, DMEA has been limited in its ability to capitalize on its energy-rich territory, despite the low cost and numerous benefits to the community.
