BEACONFEST 2018

Welcome to BeaconFest:

a bounty of senior fun! By Kevin VanGundy

B

eaconFest is a celebration of age and everything boomer and senior related, and it just happens to be the biggest boomer and senior fair in the area. If you’re reading this before the show, don’t miss out on the fun. Mark your calendars for this year’s Montrose-Delta BeaconFest Boomer and Senior Fair from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, September 20 at the Montrose Pavilion.

WHY ATTEND BEACONFEST?

Admission is free! This year’s BeaconFest features great food, informative seminars and an exciting lineup of entertainment, including area favorites like Morgan Crouse and Fiddle Power. Free seminars will be offered on topics ranging from retirement planning to local health resources.

FEELING LUCKY?

Thousands of dollars worth of door prizes will be given away in free drawings throughout the day. Simply fill out the official door prize entry form in this program and

drop it in the bucket at the BEACON’s booth. You must be present to win, so walk around or sit back and wait as names are called from the stage. With dozens of prizes to hand out, we’ll be calling winners every 30 minutes or so. That’s a lot of winning— better odds than the lottery, that’s for sure!

LET’S MAKE A SQUEAL PRIZE GIVEAWAY

All unclaimed door prizes and those that were not given away will be given to the audience at the end of the day in a madcap rendition of Monty Hall’s “Let’s Make a Deal.” Stick around! This giveaway starts at 1:40 p.m.

FREE FLU SHOTS

Haven’t had your flu shot yet? Walgreens’ certified staff members will be administering FREE flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis and while supplies last—so hurry in!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Three outstanding volunteers were nominated, you voted and we listened! Find out who readers voted as the BEACON’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year at a special mid-day ceremony at 12:45 p.m.

SENIOR’S CHOICE AWARDS I’m always impressed with the wide variety of exhibitors at BeaconFest and the way they market them-

Register to Win selves. Some bring just themselves, along with a handful of brochures. Others have booth displays that look like Disney Imagineers made them. What’s important is what you think. Please take a moment to let us know who you think has the best overall booth, the friendliest people, or the best “swag” (free stuff) by filling out the Senior’s Choice Awards ballot in this program. The exhibitors with the most votes will win a prize. Your choices will be announced in October’s BEACON.

Thousands of dollars in door prizes given away every 30 minutes. Must be present to win. Please fill out completely. (You won’t be called or spammed.) name_______________________________________________________________

Morgan Crouse, Country singer-songwriter

Tim Veazey, Singer-songwriter/Keyboard

Young singer-songwriter Morgan Crouse grew up in rural western Colorado with a passion for the western way of life—including country music. She has performed locally for seven years and traveled around the U.S., performing in legendary venues like The Bluebird Café and The Row in Nashville. She’s inspired by artists such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks and The Eagles, and aspires to play in the Grand Ole Opry circle one day.

Tim Veazey has been playing piano since age 3, picking out one-finger melodies to church hymns, popular radio hits and television theme songs. He grew up with formal training and his diverse skillset of playing classical and popular music has served him well in his near 40-year career. He has toured internationally, entertaining audiences in intimate listening rooms as well as stadiums. He has also performed for the late Princess Margaret, Ted Turner, Pete Fountain and The Allman Brothers Band member Dickey Betts. In the last year, Tim has felt the call to start a music ministry, which will focus on performing for churches across the U.S. Check out his latest CD “God is Workin’” at www.timveazey.com.

10:00 a.m. Robin Freed and harpists, Harp Robin Freed has been playing harps for over 14 years and she currently operates the Harps and Hammers Music Studio in Montrose. The majority of her students are over 60 years old—the oldest is 85— and together, they play at area assisted living facilities, weddings and private events. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Robin and her talented students at this year’s BeaconFest. For more information, including their upcoming concert dates, call 275-8996.

11:00 a.m.

1:00 p.m. Ron Koss, Guitar favorites/Sound manager Equipped with his trusty guitar, Ron Koss and his music are dynamic. Whether he’s entertaining with Americana rock favorites, country melodies or swing tunes, just about anything he plays has audiences singing along and brings them to their feet. He has played music parofessionally for over 30 years. He is BeaconFest’s sound manager and has performed at numerous events across the Western Slope for over a decade.

Fiddle Power, Folk Fiddle Power is a duo consisting of 9-year-old fiddle player Clementine and her father, Tyson Rogers, who plays accordion. Clementine grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, where her father worked as a studio/ live musician. She was exposed to music of all genres, particularly Irish and Appalachian folk music. Fiddle Power performs a set of Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with some modern family friendly tunes Clementine throws in for fun. Clementine also won this year’s fiddle contest in Montrose for her age category.

11:00 a.m. Creating your legacy through estate and charitable planning? Natalie L. Decker, Salvation Army Every person will leave a legacy. In fact, you are building yours each and every day. How can you intentionally create your legacy? How can you and your family benefit now from the legacy you will leave in the future? Salvation Army Intermountain Division’s director of gift planning and attorney, Natalie L. Decker, will discuss ways to intentionally create your legacy, both through your estate and during your lifetime. She will discuss various planning techniques that you can do on your own (without an attorney), and provide an overview of some tax-saving charitable gift planning opportunities using a variety of financial assets and arrangements that can benefit both family and charity, including charitable gifts that pay you income for life.

12:00 p.m. Easy-to-use retirement protection tools (with Q&A) Marilynn Huseby, Colorado Retirement Services & Bryce R. Lee, Attorney at Law We all want to know ways we can support and protect our loved ones, but some of the valuable retirement protection tools out there seem out of reach, too expensive or too difficult to understand. In this 90-minute presentation, attorney Bryce R. Lee will discuss various trusts and the reasons why a trust, a simple will or a beneficiary deed would best serve your needs. Marilynn Huseby, a resource consultant for Colorado Retirement Services at the Montrose Senior Center, will explain the Spousal Protection Act, state partnerships and community options that are valuable tools when it comes to caring for your loved ones needing home health care or assisted living. She will clearly discuss the advantages and disadvantages to the revised FHAinsured HECM Reverse Mortgages that have provided families with good caring options as well. There will be a question-and-answer session at 1:30 p.m. following the presentation.
